Send us a text

This week’s theme is Tenacity represented by Card 6 dandelion. Negative thoughts come, but we can choose which thoughts we want to focus on. Pausing and focusing on what you can be grateful for in the moment helps to create a growth mindset and be more resilient.

The dandelion is all about transformation from yellow flower to white puff ball to seeds. How can your mind transform like the dandelion? Practicing gratitude helps the mind transform negative thoughts into positive ones.

21 Mar 2022Humility - A strong foundation00:39:06

Send us a text

This week’s theme is Humility represented by Card 17 violets. The root word in Latin for humility is humus, which means soil or ground. Humility is about creating a healthy foundation.

Violet flowers symbolize delicate love, affection, modesty, faith, nobility, intuition and dignity. One quirk of some Violets is the elusive scent of their flowers; along with terpenes, a major component of the scent is a ketone compound called ionone, which temporarily desensitizes the receptors of the nose. It’s almost like a way to cleanse the palate.

26 Apr 2022Celebrating all mothers and mother-like figures with healer Raj Escondo00:55:12

Send us a text

How do we appreciate the important maternal figures in our lives?

We are joined by Raj Escondo (she/her or they/them) a healing justice practitioner who hosts mother-daughter retreats and supports the integration of body and land for people and organizations.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day in its many forms, we also recognize relationships are not easy. The challenge can allow us to grow like what writer Anais Nin says: “And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

03 May 2022Simplicity - The Art of Living and Dying Well with Hospice Nurse Linda Ong00:46:52

Send us a text

What does it mean to live and die well?

Death is a topic we don't often talk about, but it's something we all must face.  We decided to ask our friend Linda Ong to share her perspective and experience as a hospice nurse, death doula and sound healer who had to navigate the loss of both her parents.

More about Linda:

Linda Ong is a holistic registered nurse working in Hospice since 2011 and becoming a Death Doula in 2018.  She specializes in the Art of Living and Dying Well and believes that when we learn to live well, we can also learn to die well.

As a Sound and Energy practitioner, Linda continues to study both Western and Eastern healing philosophies and loves to find ways to incorporate both to help others on their healing journey.  She recommends the book, The Healing Power of Sound, for anyone interested in learning to work with sound.

09 May 2022The future of learning comes from our past00:53:37

Send us a text

We go to schools to train our brains. We go to gyms to train our bodies.  Where do we go to train our emotions? The reality is that we train our emotions on each other. This, however, is changing with a new generation of teachers who integrate social emotional learning and somatic practices into their curriculum.

In this episode, we hear from four teachers who are on the leading edge of education. Their inspirations are both ancestral and science-based. Future generations will have whole new vocabularies and practices to integrate their minds, bodies and hearts. Fortunately, it’s never too late to learn these integrated practices now.

Melorie Serrano Masacupan, M.Ed is a writer coaching founders to tell their stories with her digital growth agency focused on organizational wellness. You can find her @heymelorie on all social platforms and at heymelorie.com.

Jen Wolfe is a biracial Thai American mathematics teacher educator and scholar at the University of Arizona.  You can follow her on Twitter and Instagram, @drjenmathed

Tiffany Chan is a Chinese American educator and visual artist who seeks to build equitable & compassionate learning communities.  You can find her on Instagram @t.chanchan and at www.tiffanychanart.com

Bong Lau (they/them) is a Cantonese somatics and mindfulness coach, singer, and visual artist who lives to cultivate creativity in themselves and others.

06 Jun 2022Introducing Season 2 : Collective Acceleration00:01:56

Send us a text

This theme for the second season of our podcast is Collective Acceleration.

We believe stories are maps.  These words are a technology to help us navigate life.

The 39 plants in the Gratitude Blooming card deck are wayfinding points to our Collective Acceleration.

Each week we share stories from the frontlines of this new landscape.  We will have teachers, healers, leaders and many other changemakers join us to share their emergent practices.

The stories become the map we create together across our lives and even into the metagarden.

For each episode, we will drop a new limited-edition digital art, an NFT.  Collecting them is how you can support our podcast, movement and participate in future utility, including discounts at Gratitude Blooming and Hestia Retreat Center.

14 Jun 2022Spiritual Protocols with Michael Preston00:54:01

Send us a text

Protocols are the basic set of rules that define how information can be exchanged whether it is a biological cell or the transfer of data between computers, even cryptocurrency.

This week we explore the theme of Infinite Possibility, represented by the delphinium, and learn about spiritual protocols from Michael Pom Preston from the Winnemem Wintu tribe of Mt. Shasta in Northern California. He claims spiritual responsibility to the winnemem wywakit (McCloud River) and this is the spiritual background that he speaks from. He is also an enrolled member of the Susanville Indian Rancheria in Susanville California as a descendent of the Wada Ticutta Numu (Seed Eater Paiute), Modoc, and Ilmawi/Madesi Pit River tribes.

He shares how ceremony and spiritual enlightenment are the highest technology there is, even in our day-to-day life. There are rules to it and spiritual bypassing is not allowed as a matter of physics.

20 Jun 2022We are emotional beings with somatic coach Steve Seto00:49:04

Send us a text

Embodiment practices are reminders that we are emotional beings before we are physical beings, according to somatic coach Steve Seto. He shares how your emotions are not something you watch like a television show, but something you experience directly.

In mindfulness practices, there are times when it is good to be like a sky and watch the cloud of your emotions. Sometimes, however, we feel sadness or grief and all we can do is be the rain and let the water flow.

28 Jun 2022Atomic Interactions with blogger Livia Chan, M.Ed00:40:43

Send us a text

Every moment matters. Teacher and blogger Livia Chan learned early in life that you don’t know when it will be the last time you get to say goodbye to the ones you love. In her 20s, Livia lost her best friend and grandmother. Since then, Livia has made it a point to make sure to count her blessings by making every moment count. She calls these everyday moments Atomic Interactions.

Valuing these small moments is a practice of healing or feeling into our wholeness. This conversation leans into the Gratitude Blooming theme of Healing represented by the Peony, which you can also collect as an NFT. https://mirror.xyz/gratitudeblooming.eth/6O3wcMnZBlEVjOgqapyeYGQXzOFFXAnCUiPGdVxLrNY

04 Jul 2022Beyond mindfulness with UK psychotherapist and Misfit Robots co-founder Marianne Le Coyte Grinney00:45:36

Send us a text

We are part of something bigger than ourselves. This week, we are joined from the UK by psychotherapist and co-founder of Misfit Robots Marianne Le Coyte Grinney.

Together, we explore the systems of care that are essential to our mental health and the Gratitude Blooming theme of Sorrow, represented by the flower the Touch-me-not.

Marianne reminds us that mental health at its most basic level is a simple way to talk about the health of our brain.

Some simple practices introduced by Marianne to help get grounded: Pay attention to your screen time. Less is better. Get rest. And recognize that FOMO happens. It’s okay to feel and to figure out what will make you feel better.

Lastly, Marianne introduced the practice of autogenics, a method to support relaxation. It means “coming from within”. The practice supports connecting to your own nervous system and to calm it down.

11 Jul 2022Want emotional freedom? The stoic secret is in your reactions according to @Zeneca_3300:39:30

Send us a text

Emotional freedom is learning you can’t control the world, but you can control how you react to it. We explore in this wide-ranging conversation with stoic-inspired NFT leader @Zeneca_33 how he overcame his depression, his relationship to alcohol, dropping out of law school to become one the driving forces in the world of NFTs and web3.

One key inspiration (and namesake for his online handle) is from Seneca, a stoic philosopher from 2000 years ago, who said, “Difficulties strengthen the mind, as labor does the body.”

Another key inspiration for @Zeneca_33 relates to the Gratitude Blooming theme of Friendship, represented by the nasturtium. He gives credit to the “unending conversation” he has with his best friend for helping him be where and who he is today.

Collect the Nasturtium NFT with its two pollinating bees and the theme of friendship as a reminder of who you appreciate in your life. It’s also a great way to support us sharing more gratitude in the world.

Finally, in the meme spirit of web3, go touch some grass today!

This week’s theme is HOPE represented by the Azalea flower NFT. With recovery advocate Aaron Marks, we explore the biological and emotional impact of substance use. This knowledge comes from his own 17 years in recovery. He asks a very simple question to make addiction clear: If you were very thirsty or hungry, what would you do to fix that?

He is a leader in the space as the Co-founder of Misfit Robots, an NFT project building out Mental Health as a Service in Web3, President of the Board at a non profit treatment center, the Chair of the Prevention and Education Subcommittee for the US Attorney’s Opioid Task Force, a public speaker, and fierce advocate for reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorder.

To keep the lights on he works in blockchain/crypto payments as the Transaction Services Sales Director at Circle.

This week’s Gratitude Blooming podcast theme is Joy & Presence, represented by the Indian Paintbrush NFT. We hear from the artists about the inspiration for the flowing relationship between the hummingbird and the flower.

We then talk with energetic therapist Kitty Folmer (MSc) who studied Clinical Psychology at the University of Amsterdam. She wanted an alternative to medications for the depression she had experienced in her youth. After graduating, Kitty immersed herself in healing and regression therapy in her search for truth and the meaning of existence.

She found healing by connecting to the earth and through intensive training at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. Kitty has found community and web3 spaces like ZenAcademy as a way to change the world.

This week’s Gratitude Blooming theme is Sing represented by the Foxglove NFT. We hear a powerful story of what finding your voice truly sounds like from Melissa Lau, principal of Seachange Coaching. Through the power of singing in a foreign language, she unlocks her unique voice, her heritage and her purpose, including the science behind the transformation.

Not only does Melissa focus on Mindful Leadership, but she has over a dozen years of business experience in the trenches — including consulting for Fortune 500 C-suite teams at McKinsey, and in senior leadership roles at top technology companies. Melissa believes that the key to leadership is to learn from nature.  Nature doesn't thrive in a mono-cropping culture.  All forms of diversity are welcome and necessary for thriving.

This week’s Gratitude Blooming theme is trust represented by the Wildflower.  When times are tough, how do we trust enough to remain unmoving until the water clears itself?

Mario Jefferson’s story inspires us to create new personal narratives around trusting ourselves, each other, and the systems we exist in.

As a black youth raised in the foster care system of the south, Mario witnessed life through failed family, community, religious and legal systems. Rather than being crushed by the violence and disillusionment of his upbringing, he found a way to maintain his sunny disposition on life.

He traveled west to join the Occupy LA Movement, which became a critical turning point to leverage his natural gifts as a mediator, technologist and systems thinker in creating a new financial system we can all put our trust in, especially for his daughter and her future generations.

23 Aug 2022Blood Memory: Without healing, we repeat the brokenness of the past00:44:23

Send us a text

Flower: Redwood

Blood memory can be described by your ancestral and genetic connection to language, songs, spirituality, and teachings. Your ancestors are in you all the time and everything they experienced is in you. And you have an opportunity to heal and grow in each moment.  This week we are joined by Arella Trustman M.A, a member of the Walker River Paiute Tribe of Nevada who shares how we can move from victim to survivor to hero. It’s not always linear, but it is possible.

The Gratitude Blooming theme of strength is represented by the redwood. The digital art bridges a whimsical interpretation of a redwood illuminated by a full moon with an owl sitting on a series of ascending triangles.

Arella Trustman M.A received her Master’s degree from NYU in Psychology with a Clinical focus in May of 2021.  Her thesis, titled, "Healing Indigenous Historical Trauma: Perspectives of Resilience, Resistance, and Decolonization of Treatment” is an exhaustive review from the novel perspective of alternative and resilient responses to histories of oppression.  Her thesis proposed decolonization of mental health diagnosis and treatment with a strengths-based approach and integration of traditional healing practices.  Arella has shifted professionally into Web3 where she leverages her skills to build communities and educate individuals in the space about mental health.  On the side, Arella continues to do consulting work for Stewart Indian School in Carson City, NV and has contributed materials on Indigenous Historical Trauma for their cultural center and a 4th grade level mini-textbook on Nevada Native History for teachers.

This week’s podcast theme of discovery is expansive from the deeply personal to the full human experience. The digital artwork takes us beyond the day and into the night. The agave flower opens up to the cool light of the moon and pollinating bats.

Balancing being a social entrepreneur and parent, Kabira Stokes joins us to share her unique story. She can trace her Quaker roots to the 1600s in Pennsylvania and Jewish immigrants from Poland, but also grew up in a Sufi Muslim community as a blond white woman.

Activated by protesting the Iraq war and seeing the violence in Los Angeles, Kabira founded  Isidore Recycling to recycle electronic waste and hire formerly incarcerated workers. She learned that you don’t fight terror with terror. You don’t fight violence with violence.

As a parent and human being, she sought to find empathy. To hear the call of crisis with compassion. To love through discomfort.

This week we explore the theme of tenacity, represented by the dandelion, with artist and musician Radhika Vekaria. Even after a big life challenge, Radhika shares that the heart doesn’t need protecting. It’s protecting us. Hearts don’t break, only our expectations. She found we can always recharge the heart with love and breath.

The digital artwork of the dandelion is juxtaposed against selected words from Charles Darwin, reflecting the unique relationship between nature and culture.

Radhika is an artist delivering ancient eastern philosophies primarily through the medium of music. In her career, she has played on world stages with luminaries such as Prince and throughout Europe with many known artists and bands.  Despite being born in the UK, Radhika was deeply drawn to her African and Indian heritage.

Today she resides in America and throughout her work, whether teaching, speaking or creating, Radhika expresses through to the roots of the Vedic sciences, astrology and practices over 5000 years old.  She is a speaker for causes close to her heart, for sharing knowledge that enliven and encourage clearer choices, creating a world our deeper selves want to experience.  She is driven by the harmonic connection between humanity and the world around and says "Only in finding inner truth will we experience outer peace".

Explore the Gratitude Blooming theme of Perspective through the agapanthus flower and a conversation with author and co-founder of the Center for Wild Spirituality Victoria Loorz. She reminds us, as does the art, that what is unnamed is forgotten.

We are invited to listen to the wilderness, which can be translated as the voice that speaks. When we listen first, then we can be in a healthier conversation. And it is important to know that this doesn’t have to be all serious. In fact, the more we play with these practices the faster they become our normal.

Play with this moment. It may give you an opportunity to dance with the sublime. This week we talk with community leader and environmentalist Effie Turnbull Sanders and explore the theme of Reverence inspired by the Gratitude Blooming sunflower.

Last year, Effie brought the Gratitude Blooming Circle practice to her team at the University of Southern California where she is the VP of civic engagement and economic partnerships. The weekly practice has helped her team become both more vulnerable and playful, which has been important with more remote working.

Effie also shares how as a six year old in a rural coal town in Virginia beginning her own dialogue with nature. Her reverence for nature has only grown since then. Active in public and nonprofit service, Turnbull Sanders is currently a governor’s appointee and environmental justice commissioner for the California Coastal Commission. Turnbull Sanders has been an active board member and adviser to the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.

27 Sep 2022Want more abundance? Be kind and pay attention00:50:55

There is a myth about scarcity. When we connect to each other the separation and supremacy that rely on the idea of scarcity fall away. Inspired by the rose of sharon, this week we talk abundance with poet, strategist, designer and philanthropic and capital advisor Taj James of Full Spectrum Labs.

His father from Alabama and his mother with Scandinavian roots via the midwest, for Taj the spiritual and political were connected like the front and back of his hand. Since the age of six, he was focusing on fixing the world, in particular the idea that man is separate from nature. We are nature.

Taj studied with Thich Nhat Hahn in Plum Village where he learned mindfulness leads to concentration and concentration leads to insight. Moreover, he was told by a monk that a river of love flowed through him night and day. He was loved. You belong here. With this insight, he felt the power of being kind, including to yourself, and the importance of paying attention.

With inspiration from Howard Thurman, Taj reminds us: “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

This week we invite you to alchemize your belly breath. To transform pixels to atoms. To go from digital to analog. With guest Dr. Paul Chengpo Wang (aka Sifu Paul), we invite you to retreat into your well-being and wholeness. The Gratitude Blooming theme is patience, represented by the chamomile. Our artist Arlene Kim creates her first animated gif, a fun and delightful homage to Takashi Murakami. Her chamomile flowers light up as guides to joy and restfulness.

When Dr. Wang is not traveling around the world to teach or treat patients, he enjoys training and being in nature, meditation, and retreat. Besides application of classical acupuncture, Chinese medicine, neigong, martial arts, calligraphy, guqin, and perennial philosophy, his interests include scientific findings in photobiology, quantum biology, the autonomic nervous system, the mirror neuron system, the microbiome, telomeres, epigenetics, mitochondrial disease, intergenerational trauma, and the fundamental forces.

Dr. Wang earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Integrative Biology with an emphasis on human locomotion and biodynamics as well as minor studies in Chinese philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley. He also attained a Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine (MSTCM) and a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine (DACM), both from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He is professionally accredited by the California Acupuncture Board as a Board Licensed Acupuncturist (LAc). His official certifications as a Sifu of WingChun (詠春拳師傅), WingChun Fifth Technician Grade (詠春第五級技士), WingChun Combat Instructor (詠春技擊教師), and Escrima Fifth Level (武器第五段士) are conferred from the International Academy of WingChun (IAW).

11 Oct 2022Gentleness: Pouring with heart00:49:41

Send us a text

Being there for each other. That’s the core inspiration for bar owner and author Cedd Moses. He says, “It’s not worth growing unless we can be there for each other.” He is on the path to redefine the hospitality industry with his bars and company Pouring with Heart, which is also the title of his new book: Pouring with Heart: The Essential Magic Behind the Bartenders We Love.

This week we explore active listening, moving from technical skills to human skills and with Cedd Moses we are reminded of the aphorism that culture eats strategy for breakfast. His company is 450 people strong and his vision is to grow to 2,030 by 2030 based on values of lovingkindness.

His book starts with this quote:

"In the past, jobs were about muscles, now they're about brains, but in the future, they'll be about the heart." -Dame Minouche Shafik, London School of Economics

Science also supports this heartfulness approach. Meditation leader Jack Kornfield shares that researchers like Richard Davidson have amassed evidence that measurable changes to our brain and nervous system occur 10x faster when heart practices like compassion and lovingkindness are incorporated with mindful attention.

The flower for this podcast is inspired by the gardenia and the theme of gentleness. The art is an animated gif, which moves a soft pink circle into the black and white sketch of the gardenia. It creates the feeling of permeability and invites us to soften our edges. How would you interpret the art?

18 Oct 2022Everything is alive and everything is listening to you00:47:49

Send us a text

Life is not a script. It is a conversation. Life is going to life. How are you connected to it?

Cultural anthropologist and culture keeper Dr. Erika Powell shares when she learned to pray from a Lakota elder. In a meadow in South Dakota, the elder shared: everything is alive and everything is listening to you.

Before this moment, she asked whose inbox was getting my prayers. When she connected to the life all around her, everything changed.

She says, your purpose is to be human and to have this human experience. To connect to our shared humanity, the light and dark.

The artist Arlene Kim Suda shares this theme of prayer through both her drawing of the rhododendron juxtaposed with three triangles. She also read a piece from the poem Ash Wednesday by T.S. Eliot, which includes the beautiful paradox: "Teach us to care and not to care / Teach us to sit still."

How do we build compassion and be non-attached? All of this is an invitation to be less judgemental. We all want to feel connected to something bigger than ourselves.

Dr. Powell is bilingual in Spanish, holds a doctorate in Instructional Technology & Design from the University of Virginia, and a MS.Ed in Intercultural Communication from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA in Cultural Anthropology from Haverford College.

25 Oct 2022Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty00:48:33

This week’s theme of Wholeness embraces both the light and shadow. Artist Arlene Kim Suda shares this inspiration from Jun'ichirō Tanizaki — 'Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty.’

We are encouraged to remember the beautiful grays and that our wholeness will never destroy us.

Joined by the intuitive and thoughtful strategic advisor and executive coach Stephanie Ervin, she reminds us that “We are more than our jobs that we show up to do.”  Her company is named Feathership and is a reimagining of leadership that can be both light and powerful. She sees this type of wholeness as a path to liberation, even when she’s had to reconcile her own bi-racial identity and to accept herself, she had to forgive those who were hurtful.

Over the past decade, she has founded, designed, and led strengths-based leadership pathways for the public education system. Her award-winning work on action research and communities of practice has been featured in Mills College's research publications.

Teacher and thought partner Norma Wong (Norma Ryuko Kawelokū Wong Roshi) joins us to reflect on everything from ancestry to neuroscience to her own childhood influences. Abbot of Anko-in, an independent branch temple of Chozen-ji, Norma articulates the Collective Acceleration of this moment, which also serves as the title and inspiration for the second season of our podcast.

Inspired by the Gratitude Blooming theme of remembrance and the poppy, Norma challenges us to exercise more choice. She asks, do we choose to bloom or stay in the ground? Plus, she shares how together we might rise to the occasion, and not get swept away by the tide.

Wong serves practice communities in Hawai‘i, across the U.S., and in Toronto, Canada. Among her areas of teaching: waging peace; leadership and strategy in the 7 generations context.

Wong served as a state legislator, on the policy and strategy team for Governor John Waihee, and community organizing and policy work in the Native Hawaiian (indigenous) community.

She is a Native Hawaiian and Hakka who lives in Kalihi Valley on the island of O`ahu in the Hawai`i archipelago.

Our Full Length Conversation with VC Tang on Self Care inspired by the Allium Triquetrum/3-Cornered Leek (Card #10)

We're cooking up some gratitude this week with this long-form interview with VC Tang on the theme of self care as it relates to community care.  We hope this conversation inspires you to nourish yourself by cooking and eating with others!

VC is an author, cook, and martial artist who happens to have an MBA and an entrepreneurial spirit.  She just released her first cookbook and it’s got tasty stories and recipes from her Thai community.

For her, cooking is an artform that is as much about bodily sustenance as it is about feeding our spirits with stories.  When not in the kitchen, VC has spent most of her career in nonprofit program management, and is also a Taiji and Zen practitioner, and a proud alumni of the Berkeley Thai Temple’s performing arts program.

23 Nov 2022Why Gratitude? Explore & Practice with the Gratitude Blooming Team00:33:29

Send us a text

We're taking a step back this week to explore the question of "Why gratitude?".

One answer is self-care. The brain has a biological bias to focus on the negative and gratitude disrupts this bias. This negative instinct sits in our amygdala, which while only the size of an almond is nearly as old as the dinosaurs.

The other "why gratitude", and the one that is truer to our hearts, is because we are human beings and yearn for a deeper connection to each other and the world around us.

Gratitude is the bridge where we can cross from our own self-care to the care for each other.

Yes, we have this “reptilian-brain” that is often quicker to respond to the unexpected than the prefrontal, executive decision-making part of our brain. Yes, gratitude releases dopamine and serotonin, which give us both motivation and emotional stability to disrupt our default settings of fight-flight-freeze.

Gratitude makes visible what you value. It’s proactive and prosocial.

We hope you take some real-world lessons from today’s live gratitude practice with the Gratitude Blooming team, Belinda Liu, Omar Brownson and Arlene Kim Suda.   The themes of discovery, growth and patience feel super resonant this time of year!

Remember, the most important practice is the one that works for you.

02 Dec 2022What can bloom from your vulnerability? Conversation with Angela Oh, Civil Rights Lawyer and Mediator00:38:15

Send us a text

What can bloom from your vulnerability?

This week, we explore the theme of vulnerability represented by the winter rose with zazen practitioner Angela Oh. She invites us to imagine vulnerability as choosing the unknown, even if it’s scary. Being vulnerable means walking hand-in-hand with courage.

Angela Oh is a renowned civil rights lawyer (though she would never say that of herself) turned Zen priest turned mediator. She shares how to listen to nature and to be in “right relationship”. More and more her practice is trusting the silence.

Right relationship is like the murmuration of birds. Collective movement can happen when we are not too close or too far from each other.

08 Dec 2022The Art of Gratitude00:31:07

Send us a text

At the heart of Gratitude Blooming is art. All the art is an attempt to bring some kind of healing into the world.

According to the artist and co-founder Arlene Kim Suda, even if the expression of a work reaches just one person at a time, it feels like the slow work needed to build the momentum to create the world we hope and dream to live in.

This week we talk more about the power of art - both creating and interpreting it.  Inspired by Oren Slozberg, the Executive Director of Commonweal, we explore Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) as a process of looking at art that leads to deeper understanding and interpretation. The first step is simply to look at the art.

  • What do you see?
  • What colors are used?
  • What can you describe of the plant?

Once you have a good sense of what you're looking at, the next step is to start asking questions.

  • What do you think is happening in the illustration?
  • What might the artist be trying to say?
  • What does this remind you of?
  • What is the plant saying?

There is no right or wrong answer in interpreting art. It is a practice of making meaning.

22 Dec 2022Why Nature? Set your intention into the wild00:35:00

Send us a text

In this intimate conversation, we look back and look forward on the year and the lessons our team has learned from being in close connection to nature.

Belinda talks about how nature has been a profound and lifelong learning experience for her and how it is accessible and universal to everyone.

Omar shares about the importance of gratitude and mindfulness in allowing us to adapt to change and be present in the moment.

Arlene reminds us of the eternal and our shared humanity through nature.

Nature is a source of stillness and presence, and  it can help us to understand the cycles and transitions of life. Experiencing nature allows us to deepen our practices of stillness and presence, and provides an anchor points for understanding the world around us.

This week we invite you to take a moment to go outside. Find some soil to put your feet or your hands in. And remember that connection that we all have to the earth that is always available to us.

28 Dec 2022Revisiting Tenacity from Season 1: Reframing Negative Thoughts00:32:27

Send us a text

As we transition to a new year, we revisit the concept of tenacity and how it is represented by the dandelion.

The dandelion is a symbol of transformation, going from a yellow flower to a white puff ball to seeds. Similarly, we can transform our minds by practicing gratitude and shifting our focus from negative thoughts to positive ones. This helps us to cultivate a growth mindset and become more resilient.

As we enter the new year, it's a good time to reflect on this theme of tenacity and how we can cultivate it in our own lives. Remember, we have the power to choose which thoughts we want to focus on and to transform our minds for the better.

31 Jan 2023Impermanence - Embracing Loss00:32:18

Send us a text

In this episode of the podcast, "Impermanence - embracing loss," we dedicate it to our beloved podcast producer, Brian Vasquez, who recently passed away. Brian was a self-taught and Grammy-nominated audio producer who never forgot the magic of audio and had a deep appreciation for the craft. He will always be remembered for his love for sound and storytelling.

Brian’s love for audio began at two years old with his first Fisher-Price cassette recorder. On any given day, this small wonder of technology gave his imagination permission to run wild as a sportscaster, a preacher or a musician. He would always remind us that “sound is eternal.”

We also feature our conversation with Karen Mack, the founder of LA Commons, an arts organization that helps communities tell their stories and artists create dynamic works of public art, including with nature. Karen shares her insights on how art and community work together to create meaning, and how technology can both connect and disconnect us from each other. She also reflects on the importance of imagination and the beauty of nature.

We hope you enjoy the closing practice of listening with presence as a way to cherish the relationships that truly matter to you!

10 Feb 2023Sacred Ground - Top soil and composting dead people00:33:57

Send us a text

This week, we interview Katrina Spade, the founder of Recompose, a company that provides funeral service by composting the dead. Inspired by the Gratitude Blooming Wildcard - Lilac, Katrina shares her personal journey and experiences that led her to this work, including her childhood growing up in rural New Hampshire and her background in architecture and design. She explains how composting and gardening were a part of her early awareness of the cycles of life and death, and how her work with Recompose is focused on creating a more natural and sustainable way of dealing with death.

She also talks about the challenges and successes of starting and growing her business, as well as the legal and societal hurdles she faced in this field. Additionally, she shares her thoughts on the funeral service industry and its impact on the environment and the rising conversation around end-of-life and climate change grief.

The goal of Recompose is to make composting the default solution and to create a gathering of community to legalize and prove that it is safe. With this in mind, Katrina aims to make the entire experience, including decomposing human bodies, beautiful and to create rich topsoil in 30-60 days.

Join us as we discuss the significance of putting time and attention into our relationship with nature and learn how it can bring joy and fulfillment to our lives.

The nonprofit Kiss the Ground is on a mission to awaken people to the possibilities of regeneration and the name of their organization was inspired by this Rumi poem.

Today, like every other day,
we wake up empty and frightened.
Don’t open the door to the study and begin reading.
Take down a musical instrument.
Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

In this episode, we talk to Ain Bailey, the founder of New Seneca Village, as she shares her insights on the Gratitude Blooming card #17, Humility, represented by two connected violets.

Ain shares how nature is her first community and how important it is to be in relationship to land for land's sake. She feels the unwavering presence of nature, from the big sky to trees, and how they make her feel seen and known. We delve into her recent big move from the San Francisco Bay Area of California to rural Alabama and how she feeds and is fed by nature.

Ain discusses the vision of New Seneca Village, a non-profit retreat space and network that offers nature-based restorative residencies for cis, trans, and non-binary Black, Indigenous, and women of color leaders working towards racial, economic, and social justice.

We explore the question of how we can practice the future now and the resources that are available to us, including time, space, nature, and connection to others. Don't miss out on this inspiring conversation about the importance of living our future vision in the present moment, for the betterment of the world to come.

Find out more about Ain's passions:

Ain Bailey (she/they) is a restoration practitioner whose work is in service to Sacred Futures. Each of these collaborative projects, along with her healing centered coaching practice, are grounded in creating containers within which folks can connect with themselves, with others, with nature and higher consciousness to access their individual sovereignty, purpose and agency for the benefit of the collective.

Ain lives and works on the unceded and ancestral land of the Coosati and Muskoke people, colonially known as Alabama.

Send us a text

In this episode of our podcast, we are joined by Liz Childs Kelly, the author of the book "Home to Her: Walking the Transformative Path of The Sacred Feminine." Liz shares with us her journey of co-creating the world she wants to live in by trusting in flow, trust, and faith, rather than following a rigid ten-step formula.

Liz tells us about how inspiration struck her one morning, leading her to write her book, but how it took a few more years of living before it could be finished. The pandemic hit, and Liz found herself driving an RV across the country, dreaming of what the future could hold. She shares with us how her work was not done with her. It took six or seven years to complete. Liz was famished for information on the history of the divine feminine and her extensive research shows that even Neanderthals had carvings that resembled maternal symbols.

This episode will leave you inspired to co-create the world you want to live in and to trust in the flow of life. Tune in to hear Liz's unique perspective on the sacred feminine and her journey of bringing her book to life.

About Liz:

Liz Childs Kelly is a writer, award-winning researcher, educator, community builder, and host of the popular Home to Her podcast, which is dedicated to amplifying the voices of the Sacred Feminine. An initiated priestess in the 13 Moons lineage, she also holds certifications in Reiki, as well as Vinyasa and Yin Yoga.

Join us in this captivating episode of Gratitude Blooming as we delve into the theme of Wholeness with the remarkable Lorrie Adams. In this conversation grounded by the vibrant Forsythia, Lorrie takes us on a journey of self-discovery and healing, sharing her profound insights and experiences. Her Shamans Cave Maker community also crafted the Gratitude Blooming wooden card deck holders!

From a young age, Lorrie felt a profound connection to nature and the world around her. A transformative moment playing outside in the wintry landscapes of New England sparked a sense of wonder and set her on a path of exploration. Drawing inspiration from shamanism and plant medicine, Lorrie discovered the power of intent and the practice of recapitulation, which allowed her to release the burdens of the past and embark on a journey towards wholeness.

Lorrie's lineage of Makers, a pragmatic and ancient tradition rooted in Western Europe, holds a rich history of self-healing and connection to the natural world. Through her teachings, she shares the importance of reconnecting with our hearts and listening to the silence within our own beings.

In this episode, she shares the first of 6 practices on intent, called The Path of the Heart, from a class that the Makers at Shamans Cave are offering for free for our community.  Join here:   https://www.shamanscave.com/courses/72-free-spirals-class-promotion

Also available on their website is a description of a basic recapitulation practice Omar and Arlene reflected on at the closing of this episode.  You can try out on your own: https://www.shamanscave.com/beginning-practices/the-recapitulation

Read more about their Woodworking Philosophy:
We strive to make all our products with wood either sourced from our property in Kentucky or from local lumber yards. We are able to make almost all of our turned (round) products from limbs and logs cut on our almost 30 acre property.

Our design process uses intent:  We look for the piece of wood that has the right qualities and feel to produce our intended outcome. We consider what species of wood to use for each piece.

We ask:

  • What wood is best for its purpose? How will the finished product look and feel?”
  • We also consider the person using the object (if possible)
  • Will the form, feel, species and finish fit the use and aesthetics of the customer?”

21 Jul 2023The Emotional Terrain of Democracy: A Deep Dive into Empathy and Vulnerability00:32:46

Send us a text

Ever pondered the intricate dance of empathy and democracy? Well, that's precisely what we set out to explore with our esteemed guests, Sofia Alvarez and Jim Herr, from the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy. Through this collaborative project, we created three reflection booths, inviting people to pause in a public square. Together, we navigated the terrain of emotions, giving individuals the liberty to tap into their own emotions and harness their inner wisdom while we talked about our collective journey.

We peeled back the layers of vulnerability, delving into its crucial role in a thriving democracy. The interplay of empathy, power, and vulnerability revealed how these elements can foster a healthy space for emotion sharing, resource pooling, and heartfelt expression. Sofia and Jim lent their insights, shedding light on how our Empathy and Democracy series can facilitate a more in-depth discourse on empathy's role in democracy. We also marveled at nature's role in reminding us of our shared humanity—an essential reality check.

In a world that seems swamped with uncertainty, we underscored the gentle power of kindness and trust. We explored the art of gentleness and how to coax individuals into creating safe spaces for themselves and others. Join us for one of our upcoming pop-up art installations at the Japanese American National Museum—an embodiment of our collective journey. Help us weave together the narratives of empathy, vulnerability, gentleness, and democracy—a tapestry that promises to be rich in insights and revelations.

01 Sep 2023Reciprocity: Beyond a 'debt of gratitude'00:34:17

Send us a text

There is more to reciprocity than giving back. Our guest, Christine Liboon, a PhD student in Education, is here to take us on a deep exploration of her findings. She shares her fascinating research around the Filipino concept of 'utang na loob', which she and her colleagues are redefining as a gift rather than a debt. We also explore the symbolism of currency as not merely monetary exchange but a representation of a promise or a commitment.

The second part of our journey with Christine leads us into an important conversation about self-care, joy and reciprocal relationships. Drawing from her personal experiences, she underlines the essence of rekindling joy in activities we love, the significance of introspection, and the need to rebalance life.

She makes us rethink kindness and gentleness, not just as virtues, but as tangible bridges connecting self-care and community. As a parting gift, we invite you  to embrace and feel the power of gentleness through music. So, get ready to be inspired and challenged in equal measure in this enriching episode.

Send us a text

Ready to reframe fear and the unknown as fertile ground for creativity and change? Our illuminating conversation aims to inspire you to do just that. We explore the "J-curve", a trajectory of change that involves embracing failure and loss, while co-creating a future outside traditional conventions.

The dance between fear and creativity forms the heart of this episode. We invite you to consider the vital role of the unknown in collective change and how artists harness this uncertainty. While fear can stifle, it can also spark creativity when viewed through a lens of joy and playfulness. We also discuss the concept of 'enough', inviting you to examine the roots of your fears and construct metaphorical houses to safeguard your dreams.

Let's take a moment to reflect on how we protect our dreams. We focus on the power of gratitude and freedom, discussing ways to shield our dreams from fear and nurture playfulness for resilience. We bring to light the significance of creating space for failure from an Asian-American perspective and how the unfamiliar can lead to rewilding our hearts. It's more than a discussion; it's a journey into the unknown. Are you ready?

27 Oct 2023Be in the World with Tenderness00:22:30

Send us a text

Imagine a world where tenderness takes the political stage and grace is nurtured enough to birth something beautiful. In today's heart-to-heart, we sit within the hard cracks and rubble of life, armed with a gentle energy, exploring how we can endure the world's heaviness without being swept away by it. Drawing inspiration from Bayo Akomolafe's call for a politics of tenderness, we invite you to join us in this moment of vulnerability as we turn to the Gentleness card from our deck, a beacon created in a moment of overwhelming emotion. We delve into the importance of creating a space for discomfort to arise and the necessity of channeling a tender energy before taking action.

But, our journey doesn't stop at tenderness; forgiveness, too, holds a vital place in our discussion. Ever experienced the therapeutic power of art and music? We're inviting you to pause, reflect, and embrace the themes of healing and forgiveness, creating room for the discomfort of change. Light a candle for healing and listen to our song Forgiveness, for yourself and your community. Reflecting on the anemone card from our deck, a symbol of forgiveness, we navigate through the strength it takes to weather challenging times and the energy required for true forgiveness. Remember, tenderness, grace, gentleness, and forgiveness are the pillars we need in our lives, and this conversation hopes to serve as a gentle reminder.

16 Nov 2023Reimagining Democracy as an Everyday Practice of Listening, Speaking & Asking00:51:57

Send us a text

How do you find hope and personal empowerment in the face of war and political unrest?

According to Lea Endres, the CEO of NationBuilder, democracy is the least violent form of government currently known to humans.  It's a system. It's also an idea. And it lives in our imaginations.

Research shows that when citizens are actively engaged in showing up for their community,  it can actually turn the tide in countries that have slid into authoritarianism.  Human beings will not endorse or advocate for violence against another group until they have dehumanized that group.  Dehumanization is a prerequisite for violence.

Lea reminds us that we each have personal power and agency.  When institutions fail, it's actually civil society that can bring us back into a healthy balance.

For our second live podcast series, we reimagine democracy as an everyday practice of listening, speaking, and asking questions in a new way to humanize one another and build our muscle of empathy.

Tune into this raw, inquisitive conversation with our live audience, the Gratitude Blooming team, Jim Herr from the Democracy Center, and Lea Endres from NationBuilder.

Enjoy the captivating intro and closing beats of the Taiko drummers from On Ensemble to notice more fully with your heart.

With wisdom from Gratitude Blooming’s rose card representing choice, the celebrated author of Emergent Strategy joins co-hosts Belinda Liu and Omar Brownson for an insightful conversation on building right relationships, the power of proximity and her new book Loving Corrections.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Talking story, weaving poetry, and offering wisdom at the intersections of strategy, politics, and spiritual activism, When No Thing Works is a visionary guide to co-creating new worlds from one in crisis. It asks into the ways we can live well and
maintain our wholeness in an era of collective acceleration: the swiftly moving current, fed and shaped by human actions, that sweeps us toward ever uncertain futures. Grounded in Zen Buddhism, interconnection, and decades of community
activism, When No Thing Works explores questions like:

● As we stand at a threshold of collective change, what leaps must we make?
● How can we push through discord and polarization and meet these critical changepoints collectively?
● What practices, strategies, and spiritualities can align to vision a sustainable future for our communities and descendents?
● How can we step out of urgency to tend to our crises with wisdom, intention, and care?

Discovery often pushes us out of our comfort zone. Like the agave plant, we can have prickly spines to protect ourselves but we can also be transformed to become sweet like agave syrup. How do we make room for discomfort and become open to new questions? Hear Gratitude Circle stories of discovery related to pain and healing.

10 Aug 2021Healing - Start with the heart00:44:20

Send us a text

Heartbreak is real. In this episode, we hear from frontline healthcare workers, learn about the Japanese broken pottery practice of Kintsugi, and stories which show that healing is a process, not a destination. Neuroscience research shows a strong link between our minds and hearts. When we focus on the heart, we create greater coherence. Coherence transforms you and the world around you. In music and in nature, we find that coherence or wholeness creates resonance. Resonance is how healing our hearts begins to heal the world.

17 Aug 2021Trust - It’s pollinated, not planted, like a wildflower00:35:50

Send us a text

Where does trust come from? It comes from within us. It’s begotten, not made. To trust requires a radical shift in perspective. Trust embraces wildness. Vulnerability and gratitude pollinate trust both within ourselves and with others. Welcoming uncertainty, not control, is what makes trust unique. In this episode, we talk about three kinds of trust - naive, blind and authentic. To embody trust is to walk the walk. To talk the talk. To feel the feels. Hear stories from our Gratitude Circles to grow your trust.

24 Aug 2021Infinite Possibility - Uncertainty and fear are real, but what makes you come alive?00:43:17

Send us a text

It’s easy to think about what limits us. Fear and uncertainty are familiar. That’s the biological bias of the human brain. The challenge is to stretch the limits of what we imagine is even possible. We take inspiration from Gratitude Blooming card #27 Delphinium - Infinite Possibility.  Our relationship to the unknown shapes how much fear or hope we hold. Unconditional love can release the strings which hold us back. Join us as we uncover greater possibilities with surrender, not control.  Hear our inspirations for the creation of Gratitude Blooming and from our Gratitude Circles as we trust into our next footsteps.
