08 Jun 2022Reimagining marketing education with Marcus Dunn - Part one00:26:56

How many people do you know working in the area they studied at university?

When I started my career in marketing, tertiary qualifications were essential, but my degrees did not prepare me for actually working in marketing. Sadly, not much has changed since then.

Isn't it time that we reimagined marketing education? I chat with my friend Marcus Dunn about this very question in this episode.

Marcus has a background spanning retail, IT, automotive and, most recently, adult education. He had accumulated a wealth of what he considered "generic experience", consigning him to what felt like a life spent working in one non-descript office after another.

In the last five years, though, he experienced a career epiphany after being adequately exposed to digital marketing and specifically SEO, which resonated hard with him. Armed with a new set of skills which opened up a whole range of career options, he set off down a new career path and hasn't looked back.

This episode is part one of two of our discussion on reimagining marketing education.

One of the questions I am asked the most by my customers and my students is about where they should invest their finite marketing dollars. 20 Sep 2022Don't blame the algorithm for your content with Dante St James - Part one00:23:37

10 years ago, it wasn't uncommon for your social media content to reach 25% of your audience organically. Now, it’s considered a success if you get just 1%.

Brands blame the algorithm for their content no longer performing well, but is more at play here?

With everyone copying everyone else on social media, content has become boring, templated and done to death.

If the algorithms aren’t to blame for our poor-performing content, what is?

Joining me to discuss this spicy question is my Darwin-based friend Dante St James. He is a Lead Trainer with Meta Australia and New Zealand, a Digital Advisor and Trainer for a Federal business support program and the Northern Territory’s Entrepreneurship Facilitator on behalf of the Australian Government’s Workforce Australia.

21 Sep 2022Don't blame the algorithm for your content with Dante St James - Part two00:28:32

In Part 2 of my chat with Dante, we chat about:

  • Comparisonitis; a concerning condition that's rife among the female entrepreneurship community. We see someone posting each day on Instagram, and they look like they're killing it, and we think that's all we need to do too. But there is often a lot more behind the scenes we don't see that tells the true picture. For example, Dante has 9000 people on his email list, which is where he makes the bulk of his revenue.
  • The role of social media within your marketing funnel. Spoiler alert: social media should not be your entire funnel.
  • Why LinkedIn is Dante's primary social media channel even though he's a Meta lead trainer.
  • Whether or not eCommerce brands should focus on personal branding.

05 Oct 2022Greenwashing with Melissa Packham00:38:24

Greenwashing is happening all around us. Misrepresentation of a brands’ green credentials is unethical, and although there’s a lot of claims otherwise, it is sometimes completely intentional. Spoiler alert: intentional or not, it is never ok.

19 Oct 2022Creative strategy with Katie Emslie00:37:55

When you hear the word creativity, you often think of painting, music, or even acting. But what we’re really talking about in the context of marketing is actually coming up with creative ideas.

Creativity is how you stand out. But, it needs to be done strategically.

On this episode of the Got Marketing? Podcast I have my dear friend Katie Emslie with me to talk about what creative strategy is, why it is so important and what exactly a Creative Strategist does.

Katie has worked in the creative industry for over a decade as an Art Director, Designer, and Marketing Manager. Katie's superpower is to bring ideas to life and solve problems through visual design and creative strategy.

02 Nov 2022How do you measure success? With Kristy Dinuzzo00:39:48

What does success look like to you? I've often heard that scaling your business to one million dollars is the pinnacle of success for a business owner. But, if doing so means that you’re trading in your lifestyle and running at 110% all of the time, is it really worth it?

In this episode of the Got Marketing? Podcast, my biz pal Kristy Dinuzzo and I dive deep into this question, and why the riches are in the niches, the importance of balancing life and work, and what success really looks like for us.

Kristy helps new product based brands ditch the social media grind and go from fumbling around to mastering their marketing and growing their online stores.

16 Nov 2022Time is Running Out on Lazy Marketing with Erin Morris00:30:27

For too long, marketers (and brands) have relied on Meta and Google platforms.

They have been leaving money on the table by not considering other platforms, and not executing an omni-channel approach. And now, with the beginning of the fall of the big players, they are being left without a choice.

But what is behind the demise of the duopoly?

To have this chat, I’ve brought back one of the first guests I had on this podcast, Erin Morris. Erin is the founder of Young Folks – an independent marketing agency using business as a force for good. They're proudly a certified B Corp with carbon neutral credentials verified by Climate Active and they give back to 1% For The Planet. Erin believes in using marketing as a vehicle to get radically better results.

01 Dec 2022Cutting Through the Marketing Fluff with LNDR00:31:57

If there is a market that’s practically locked out to new entrants, it’s active wear. Right? Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, Puma: those are not small fish.

So how on earth did an unknown, bootstrapped new player not only break into the market, but seize precious market share? With the power of marketing campaigns of course.

In this episode, I am joined by the cofounders of one of my favourite activewear brands, LNDR, to unpack their marketing. Their launch campaign, “We are LNDR”, is one of my all-time favourite campaigns, but as well as nailing their campaigns, there is one heck of a David vs Goliath story here too.

22 Feb 2023Behavioural Science Meets Campaigns with Dan Monheit00:48:19

Understanding humans and our flaws is at the heart of effective marketing. Science plays a key role in marketing, especially the science of psychology. Many platforms, tools and trends promise to “revolutionise” marketing, but the reality is humans and how our brains tick remains largely the same.

In this episode, we chat about human behaviour. We explore three fascinating behavioural biases and unpack recognisable campaigns that tap into these biases in order to influence customers.

To tackle this topic, there was only one choice of guest, Dan Monheit, the CEO of Hardhat. The intersection of marketing and behavioural science is Dan’s zone of genius.

13 Apr 2023Marketing and AI with Remi Audette00:27:54

I have no problem with change, I embrace it. But, I have been burying my head in the sand and hoping that this whole AI/ChatGPT thing will go away.

My issue runs deep and is layered, and definitely could not be boiled down to a social media post.

So, on this episode, I have invited Remi Audette onto the show to have this conversation through with me.

Remi is the founder and director of Sunday Best Digital Agency. Prior to launching SBDA, Remi worked in the SEO and customer experience teams of Australia’s biggest brands, including Officeworks, Kmart and Telstra. She combines the cutting-edge SEO tactics learned from big businesses with more personalised approaches that elevate and educate small to medium-sized businesses.

27 Sep 2023Fast Moving Consumer Goods Marketing with Melissa Packham - Part One00:22:49

We talk a lot about online business on this show, because that's what I do now, but I actually spent the first decade of my career in fast moving consumer goods brands like Black Swan Dips, Kraft and Bic.

Recently, I have noticed that a lot of brand managers of these FMCG are joining our online programs, so it was probably about time to do an episode about it.

I have invited my fellow FMCG-escapee Melissa Packham on the show to talk about this, and my weird love of super markets. Melissa Packham is a Brand and Marketing Strategist and the founder of Brand-Led Business. She empowers brand owners to make their impact with conscious brand and marketing strategies.

01 Nov 2023The Psychology of Social Proof - A Creative Plus Business Webinar with Lillie Brown00:59:55

Humans are inherently social creatures. Our desire for connection, community and belonging is hardwired into us on a physiological level, and through a marketing lens, it's really important to understand that the psychological phenomenon influences our purchasing decisions.

If we're weighing out whether to buy a product or service, we naturally want to hear about other people's experiences. Did it meet and exceed their needs? Was it worth the investment? Do they recommend it?

We could harp on until we're blue in the face about how wonderful our product or service is. But this only gets us so far. This is where social proof comes in.

Today's episode of the Got Marketing? podcast is a very special one, because it is a live webinar I recorded with Lillie Brown, the Marketing Manager of Creative Plus Business.

In the session, we discussed how you can harness the power of social proof in your own business, and it was such an exciting conversation.

There is a lot more to getting your product onto the shelves of the local Woolworths or Coles than you might think. It's an extremely competitive environment, and getting ranged is only the start.

The guest on today's episode is a very special one, as she is one of the very few people to have ever successfully pitched the Got Marketing? podcast.

That guest is Tanya Boots, a seasoned expert in Category Management with over 20 years of experience. Tanya has worked with multinational clients like PepsiCo, Blackmores, and started her journey in consumer insights, later venturing into buying industrial goods for a major B2B retailer, and then heading back to the supplier side as Head of Category and Shopper Marketing.

31 Jan 2024Cult coaches with Penny Locaso00:40:52

Coach is another word that the gurus have tainted with their shady tactics and self-serving messaging.

They are selling hot garbage and diluting the value of genuine, qualified coaches who are invested in empowering people to make meaningful changes.

If you want to work with a coach, there are key signs you should look out for to ensure you aren't just setting your money on fire. That's exactly why I've invited Penny Locaso, a transformational coach and therapist, to the show today.

Penny is the founder of HackingHappy.co and a recent graduate of Campaign Classroom.

In this episode, we talk about the coaching industry, where it's going wrong, and Penny's checklist for choosing a coach that is right for you. We're also talking about how Penny uses customer avatars to build deep and meaningful connections with her clients, and of course, we talk about the gurus.

14 Feb 2024How to do strategy with Mark Pollard00:45:52

I have frequently said that I’m no fan of the 50-page strategy doc with pretty charts and graphs that sits in a draw.

Strategy can be scary, but it doesn't have to be. Strategy can actually be elegantly simple.

A few years ago, I came across a strategist on Instagram who I now quote all the time. In fact, my go-to definition for strategy is “an informed opinion about how to win”. He is Mark Pollard, and he joins me on the show today.

Mark is a strategic trainer and author of “Strategy is Your Words”.

We're going to break down one of my new favourite strategy frameworks, the Four Points, which was created by Mark, and talk about where people tend to get stuck. We're also talk about strategy versus creativity, and what it means to be a creative strategist.

07 Mar 2024Social media strategies with Jarrah Brailey00:47:37

There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to achieving success on social media. The perfect social media strategy for one brand might be completely wrong for the next, but that doesn't mean we can't learn something from the approaches taken by other brands.

In this episode, we're going to explore the social media strategies used by some of my favourite brands to see how they're authentically building their community and their brand on TikTok, Instagram and even LinkedIn.

I have a love-hate relationship with social media, so to have this conversation with me, I've invited Jarrah Brailey, who is a social media marketing diehard and founder of Jampacked, a full service digital marketing agency.

10 Apr 2024Rebranding, campaigns & creative strategy with Renee Wallace01:10:03

When a brand starts to see a plateau or a decline in their results, their reaction is often a band-aid fix, like some new social media tiles.

That won't solve their problem though. It's the underlying strategy, getting to know your audience intimately and building authenticity that will get you the results.

Businesses that don't evolve their brand, or mismanage it as they grow, aren't solving their problems.

Building a weather-proof brand is one of the biggest missed opportunities we see in small to medium sized businesses, and that's where today's guest comes in.

Renee Wallace is a fervent advocate for all things design, brand, female founders, service-based industries. She embodies a no-nonsense, powerhouse approach to fuelling brand success through her design services offered at Cultivate.

In today's episode I'm talking all things brand-building and creativity with Renee.

02 May 2024Healthy marketing with Claire Hewitt00:48:33

Strict rules and regulations, unusual customer journeys and touch points, and tight time frames are all features of the complicated world of marketing for healthcare professionals.

My love of ethical marketing and campaigns, though, is shared with today's guest.

Claire Hewitt is an experienced marketer and director of Well Communications, an agency taking care of medical and health related businesses, Australia wide.

Claire has been a member of the For the Love of Marketing Facebook group for almost as long as it has existed. While we sometimes share the same view, we don't on all things, and that is sure to make for a fantastic conversation on the Got Marketing? Show today.

22 May 2024Brand versus performance marketing with Erin Stafford00:46:14

What's more important: brand marketing or performance marketing?

This has been a topic of contention in the industry, especially when it comes to prioritising your yearly marketing budgets.

Brand marketing is about creating future demand. It is creative advertising aimed at enhancing customer awareness of, attitudes toward, and affinity with their companies’ brands. Unlike brand marketing, performance marketing delivers tangible, reportable results.

But, both impact current revenue and long-term value. Perhaps we're missing the bigger picture where brand and performance marketing can work together?

So, let's talk about it.

Today's guest is Erin Stafford, a Digital Account Director at Compass Studio. Erin’s been in agency land for the past 7 years and has spent her time with Compass Studio creating campaigns that amplify the impact of world bettering brands.

05 Jun 2024Unpacking Fayt The Label with Emily Lambourne00:45:48

Brittney Saunders started as an OG 2010s YouTuber, girl next door from Newcastle who knew she wanted to make it big one day.

Flash forward to now, she's the CEO of her own uber-successful clothing brand, cafe owner, and podcast host. In her own words, she's busy, and she loves it.

Fayt The Label, her clothing brand, is a perfect example of how personal brands and business brands can intersect. Brittney cleverly leveraged her existing audience when building her clothing brand from the ground up, and it played a major part in getting her to where she is today.

It just so happens that Fayt is Campaign Del Mar's Digital Strategist, Emily, favourite brand at the moment. As an honorary Gen Z herself raised by beauty YouTubers and vloggers, it was love at first sight for her with the brand, and of course, it helps that they are absolutely killing their marketing, too.

Em joins me in the episode to unpack the marketing strategy behind the brand, and what our listeners can learn from Brittney and Fayt.

10 Jul 2024Is the traditional agency model broken? With Pat Langton00:44:49

Creativity doesn't come in hours. So why are agencies still selling time?

We don't have to look too hard to see that the marketing industry is evolving at the speed of light, but marketing and advertising agencies have followed the same traditional agency model for over 40 years.

With experience in both the brand side and the agency, Mia has seen the problem from both sides of the fence.

So the big question is, is the traditional agency model broken?

To answer the question, today's guest is Pat Langton. After selling his agency to Hero/McCann last year, Pat founded and runs Hook Creative Studio with his brother Matt. Hook was born out of frustration with long lead times, high production costs, and inefficiency.

24 Jul 2024Gen Z doesn't want to be your friend with Lauren Meisner00:44:31

How the f*ck are you supposed market to a generation who tune out from most advertising?

Gen Z is known for rejecting the status quo, from wellness culture to luxury brands, and their marketing tolerance is practically non-existent.

They are socially conscious, demanding and discerning, and their values are rubbing off on other generations. So whether you actively target Gen Z’s or not, you should listen up.

To have this conversation with me, today's guest is Lauren Meisner.

Lauren is the founder and director of the award-winning digital youth publication, Centennial World, reaching 2+ million Gen Z's per month. Prior to launching Centennial World in 2019, she was a beauty and entertainment writer for beautyheaven, ELLE Australia, and Harper's BAZAAR Australia. Lauren also writes the Gen Z viral news Substack 'infinite scroll' and co-host’s and produces Centennial World’s weekly internet culture podcast.

21 Aug 2024Welcome to the Next Episode feat. Snoop01:01:35

In this episode, we dive into the world of celebrity and personal branding marketing with a spotlight on Snoop Dogg's recent high-profile campaigns. We discuss how Snoop has become an undeniable highlight of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, boosting NBC's viewership with his genuine and magnetic presence as a special correspondent. We also explore his successful BIC campaign with Martha Stewart, showcasing how clever, tongue-in-cheek marketing can connect with audiences and drive sales.

However, not every collaboration hits the mark. We analyse the pitfalls of Snoop's partnership with Solo Stove, where a viral PR stunt failed to translate into significant sales. Lillie Brown joins us to break down what small businesses can learn from these big-budget campaigns, emphasising the importance of authenticity, knowing your audience, and the value of emotional engagement in marketing.

11 Sep 2024Meta ads done differently with Tenai Seymour 00:48:51

In this episode of Got Marketing?, we sit down with Meta Ads expert Tenai Seymour, founder of Ads Haus, to explore the evolving world of Meta advertising. Together, we break down how to avoid the pitfalls of generic Facebook ads and why a boutique, tailored approach often delivers better results.

We dive into the importance of being fully prepared before launching ads, making sure that key marketing elements—like a well-optimised website, active social media presence, and effective email strategy—are already in place. Ads should support and enhance your existing efforts rather than being seen as a standalone solution for success when other crucial elements are missing. This episode also provides you with practical tips on ad budgeting and the importance of using data to optimise campaigns.

The content strategy myth that’s keeping your business stuck—and how to break free.

In this episode of Got Marketing?, Mia teams up with Kryshla Salaris, founder of Shall We Social and a content marketing coach for service providers and small business owners, to bust the myths about content pillars and uncover what truly makes content successful.

This isn’t your typical "how-to" on social media. It’s a candid, no-BS conversation about:

✨ Why “educate, entertain, inspire” doesn’t cut it as a content strategy —and what to focus on instead

✨ How to align every piece of content with your business goals (hello, conversions!)

✨ The key to understanding your audience’s journey and tailoring content and effective messaging that meets them where they are

✨ The hidden dangers of copying “guru” tactics—and how to avoid falling into the comparison trap

Kryshla opens up about her journey from events manager to content coach, including how a cease-and-desist letter forced her to rethink her brand identity. Mia and Kryshla also dive into the real challenges of navigating algorithm changes, building trust with a silent audience (shoutout to the lurkers!), and creating content that cuts through the noise.

If your content strategy feels stuck in the past, this episode will inspire you to ditch the fluff, work smarter, and make your marketing truly matter.

12 Feb 2025Struggling to win customers? This could be why.00:16:45

Struggling to win customers? This is the episode for you.

Many small business owners assume that better promotion will solve their sales problems. But what if the issue starts long before the website is launched or content hits social media?

In this episode, we’re breaking down why market demand is the real kingmaker—and how even the best branding can’t fix a lack of demand.

We explore two significant factors: insufficient market demand and the competitive landscape. From a below-average cafe thriving in Darwin to the oversaturated gift hamper industry, this episode is packed with real-world examples that reveal why some businesses succeed despite poor marketing—and why others fail despite doing everything “right.”

Enjoy this episode, leave a review, and share it with your business besties 🎧

What you’ll learn in this episode:

✨ Why some businesses succeed despite objectively 'average' marketing – and why great marketing won’t fix weak demand.

✨ The Darwin cafe with a 2.3-star Google rating that’s still standing (and what it teaches us about supply and demand).

✨ The reality of launching into an oversaturated market (looking at you, gift hampers).

✨ How needs-based segmentation can help small businesses carve out their niche.

The booming business categories and where opportunities lie right now.

Segments in this episode:

The Big Swing: Oslo’s self-deprecating campaign embraced its flaws and attracted the right audience by flipping traditional marketing on its head.

Low Hanging Fruit: A look at the hottest market segments in 2025, from zero-alcohol drinks to AI-powered productivity tools, and where new opportunities are emerging
