  • Craig Klement (Garland, TX) -- Choice board on Google MyMaps: pins on different locations, students choose their own adventure, detail the activities in the pin, layers to highlight the route that they took on their adventure.
  • Mark (Wisconsin) -- I have an assignment in Literature that requires the students to proofread a poorly written letter (roughly 50 mistakes) and make corrections. Is there a way to turn off Spell Check in the shared document? I have it turned off on the master copy, but when I send it out through Classroom, each of their Chromebooks turns Spell Check back on. Google News and Updates Featured Content

Matt and Kasey share ideas, sites, and tools other than those made by Google that plays nicely with Google for an enhanced teaching and learning experience.

Padlet and Sites - gather feedback through an embedded Padlet wall, post, and share work, e-portfolios, add other media to Padlet wall to demonstrate learning without having to separately add pages, etc., Use as an embedded class blog, not perfect, but easier than using Sites alone.

Wakelet and Drawings -- Create images in Drawings, add to a Wakelet collection with links, text, videos, etc. to share and for collaboration.

Flipgrid and Slides/Sites/Docs - reflection, explain their answers, set goals and revisit, reflect on writing, book talk to go with their book report, reading responses explained.

Adobe Spark and Slides/Sites -- Create images (Post), single-page web pages (Pages) and videos (Video) and embed/insert into Slides or Sites.

Canva and Sites/Slides/Forms- (Just received a major update!) Create images for your projects and creations, restaurant menus into learning menus, blog post images, flyers, brochures, headers for your forms and sites, greeting cards.

Screencastify and Maps -- Find a place in Google Maps and use Street View to view it, then record it as a virtual walking tour in Screencastify

Resources Google Teacher Tribe Mailbag

Mike Mohammad (Wisconsin) -- Make a classroom calendar. On one side of Slide, what we’re doing that day, another side: that week. Daily part changes, weekly part stays the same. New week: new slide. Better than a paper handout bc can publish and embed in a Google Site or Canvas LMS. Can link anything on schedule directly (turn in assignment, instructions, comments). bit.ly/moschedule

Kyle Anderson (Nevada) -- Keep and Forms in IEP process. A student with upcoming IEP: things have to do in Google Keep (date, send notices for parents, steps in writing it). Can use reminder function to set up in Calendar to notify when he has to complete steps. Forms: gather info for the process, send out a form to parent for details, to teachers to gather info on student, accommodations, to the student on info that will help them out best.

25 Feb 2019Webcams in Docs, Slides, Drawings and More! - GTT07600:41:04
Google News and Updates Featured Content

The webcam feature in many Google products (Docs, Slides, Drawings, etc.) makes a lot of cool learning activities possible.

How to activate it: Insert > Image > Camera

  • Make sure you’ve given access to your camera
  • If another program is using the camera, it may not work
  • You don’t need a special camera … if your Chromebook/laptop has a built-in webcam, use that!
  • Mobile devices: use the device camera, then bring in the images to do the same thing

How to use it:

  • Click the camera button below the live webcam image to take a picture
  • Take as many pictures as you want
  • Insert one at a time … remember to click the “insert” button

Ways it can be used in class:

  • Student reflection: in a shared Slides presentation where each student has a slide, have each student snap a selfie and add it to his/her own slide. Add speech/thought bubbles with Insert > Shapes > Callouts to allow for reflection or retelling what they’ve learned
  • Interview a character/historical figure: In Google Drawings, snap a selfie, but leave room to one side. Search the web for an image of a character or historical figure and insert it. Add speech/thought bubbles for the student and the character, making it as if they’re having a conversation.
  • Caption This!: This is a fun activity Matt developed with Missouri educator Laura Steinbrink. Search for an image online or upload an image. Use speech/thought bubbles to speak/think for people in the image. Then, have students add a text box on the image explaining why that person would say that. (Justifying their response moves the critical thinking up a notch on Webb’s Depth of Knowledge!)
  • Stop motion animation: Have students snap a picture of something (themselves, a drawing on a whiteboard, a clay representation of what you’re learning, etc.). Add it to a slide in Google Slides. Move it and snap another picture, adding it to the next slide. Keep adding images to new slides until your animation is complete!
  • MATH! Math teachers can sometimes struggle with using technology and having students show their work on a problem. Still using pencil and paper, no problem! Students can hold up their paper to the webcam and take a quick picture to insert into the work or attach it to their Google Classroom assignment.

Google Drawings comic strips -- Have students take pictures of themselves -- posing as themselves or as a character -- and add speech bubbles and thought bubbles.

Google Teacher Tribe Mailbag

Audra Arman-Richardson (Nevada) -- With Google+ shortly leaving us, what do you recommend as a replacement? We have 20+ schools throughout our state that share and communicate using this platform. We are not sure what to migrate to.

Mike Brilla (Pennsylvania) -- Google Classroom. Uses Doctopus and Goobric. Self-proclaimed “organizational train wreck”. Had trouble keeping track of the Sheets. Used Google Keep keeping track. Use Keep extension on Chrome. Uses the label “Things to grade.” Now everything is in one place. Links are there. Delete note when he’s done.

WATCH MIKE'S SCREENCAST

Danny Contopoulos (science teacher, New York) -- Bailee wants to know how to automatically send responses to different sheets.

In the google sheet that is accepting responses from the form, all Bailee would have to do is create two new tabs and on each tab use a filter formula

=filter('Sheet 1’!A1:F100,'Sheet 1'!B1:B100="Teacher 1") 'Sheet 1’!A1:F100 is the response range 'Sheet 1'!B1:B100 is the column with the teacher’s name "Teacher 1" is the teacher’s name (matched exactly)

Caroline Goodman (Tennessee)-- School developing new PE program where students/teachers attend classes at various times throughout the day. Google service flexible posting of class schedules so change daily, check in and out of classes, a record of who attended which classes.

Linda Hummer (Ohio) -- Personalized PD in their school district. 2 PD days -- 1 in fall with four different sessions running at the same time that staff could choose to go to, during sessions: 1 tool or several tools that do the same type of thing (formative assessment). Discuss and share what they’re doing, ask questions, work on creating things they’d like. 1 in spring -- changed to two sessions (they’re a K-12 building). Staff shared with one another, asked questions, enjoyed that type of PD, will continue using it.

Ryan Bradford -- I was listening to episode 74 last night and I think I have a solution for Bailee's question. The Query formula can be used to auto separate the data into different sheets based on certain criteria (e,g, school name, resource type, etc). If you create a Google Form with an identifying question like school name and send all of your responses to the default response sheet, you can then create two separate sheets that each use a query formula to pull on specific data based on the school name. I included some screenshots below of how I use this at my school to quickly separate supply requests by type.

Google News and Updates Featured Content

20 sites for students with free time on their hands

  • GeoGuessr — GeoGuessr uses Google Maps Street View to place you on the ground somewhere in the world in full panorama. The problem? You have NO idea where you are! You must use context clues to guess your location and pin it on a map. Choose to be dropped in certain continents, countries, cities, etc. … or make your own GeoGuessr game with GeoSettr!
  • Smarty Pins — Smarty Pins is kind of like GeoGuessr’s cousin. It asks questions from categories like arts and culture, science and geography, and history and current events. The answers are locations, and you must pin them on a map to answer. It makes geography a game, and the closer you guess, the better your score is.
  • A Google a Day — Most of us search the internet daily, if not multiple times per day. But effectively searching for something is a skill. A Google a Day challenges users to put their searching skills to the test by asking them to answer a question using Google search. With Google’s search education lesson plans you can take this game even further and begin teaching search literacy in your classroom.
  • Street View Treks — Google Maps Street View lets its users see what life is like from the road, in full panorama. Street View Treks take that same technology to some of the most spectacular locations in the world, from Mount Fuji to the Grand Canyon to the Taj Mahal in India. Swim underwater at the Great Barrier Reef or climb the El Capitan rock face at Yosemite National Park.
  • Google Arts and Culture — Discover exhibits and collections from museums and archives all around the world. Explore cultural treasures in extraordinary detail, from hidden gems to masterpieces. See super high-resolution images of some of the best works of art in the world. Walk world-famous museums. Examine historical happenings in detail.
  • Google Quick Draw! — Quick, Draw! tells you what to draw. Then, Google’s artificial intelligence tries to guess what you’re drawing. It’s a neat way to introduce students to artificial intelligence OR to look at how we convert words/ideas into images.
  • Emoji Scavenger Hunt - Emoji Scavenger Hunt is a super fun game from Google Experiments. Using the camera on your device, students identify emojis in the real world. The application uses artificial intelligence to try and determine what’s in the picture and see if it matches the emoji.
  • Autodraw - AI experiment that allows you to draw and tries to predict what you are drawing so you can then select a more professional image to add to your project.
  • Story Speaker - Combine the power of Google Docs with AI! Make interactive, talking stories without coding and play your story instantly on Google Home. What I love about this tool is that it will give you a “Choose Your Own Adventure,” story template in Google Docs, so that alone is worth exploring! Help students improve writing and get creative. Even if you don’t have a Google Home or cannot use it in your classroom, the Story Speaker tool and template are worth exploring!
  • Talk to Books - When you type in a question or a statement, the model looks at every sentence in over 100,000 books to find the responses that would most likely come next in a conversation. This is a really interesting way to help kids connect and learn with literature, discover new authors and books, and strike up some interesting conversations!
  • Made with Code - Made with Code is a program designed to help close the gender gap in the programming industry, and give girls and young women fun ways to learn how to code the things they love.

30 Sep 201910 Tips for Google Trainings and PD - GTT09200:45:28
Google News and Updates Featured Content

Matt’s recent post: 27 tips to deliver powerful professional development

  • Share all sides of a tech tool: If you’re doing technology professional development, it’s always helpful for teachers to see the student side of a tool as well as the teacher side. If they can see how the initial setup works, that’s even better.
  • Go deep rather than wide: “60 apps in 60 minutes.” I’ve attended these sessions at conferences. I’ve delivered them! Many times, I think they’re “edu-tainment” more than actual professional development. It just creates a passing familiarity with lots of apps rather than actual implementation and change. I love to go deep — learn a new strategy or tool, practice it, discuss implementation — rather than wide. Sticking on one or two impactful ideas is powerful. It can empower teachers to be ready to start using a new idea when they leave rather than just knowing about it.
  • Use the meatloaf approach to PD: When we have meatloaf for dinner, my kids know what they are getting. They like the way meatloaf tastes. However, if my wife and I want to make the meatloaf a little more nutritious, we may grind up broccoli or cauliflower and sneak it into the mix. That way, they are getting the taste they want but also a little extra nutrition. Professional development should be the same way. If I’m talking about a teaching strategy or digital tool, I love to model it in a fun way. When I demonstrate Flipgrid, I ask teachers to record me videos of where I should eat dinner that evening. They learn the tool without even realizing they’ve learned it. The task can be fun and also teach them something. It’s kind of like mixing cauliflower into meatloaf.
  • Use the problem/solution framework: Ask yourself, “What are the problems these educators face? What’s the problem that this solves?” Then, use that as a guide. Show them how your ideas solve that problem for them.
  • They might forget what you said, but they won’t forget how you made them feel.” For many teachers, professional development is a drag. It makes them feel adequate. They might feel like the person leading PD doesn’t understand them and their situation. I take every opportunity to make them feel welcome. Appreciated. Capable. I smile a LOT. If someone struggles, I help them feel like the struggle is easily fixed. If they make a mistake, I help them to feel that it’s no big deal. If something goes wrong and it’s not their fault, I make sure they know it’s not their fault and they did everything as they were supposed to. Anxiety negatively affects our neurologically-based skills. Anything we can do to reduce anxiety — in adults and in children! — helps.

From Patti Young: Hi Kasey and Matt, I love your podcast and look forward to every new episode. This year has been a struggle for teachers and their traditional ways of teaching. I am a 5th-grade teacher in middle school. My district is using a blended learning model. We have 2 cohorts Tuesdays and Thursdays and Wednesdays and Fridays. I see 2 groups of students per day. I really miss putting the kids into groups to share their learning. I love group work and I am really struggling with how to make it work this year. If you or your listeners have any ideas on how to do group work, I would love to try it. Can't wait to hear some new ideas!

Simple answer: collaborate on the assignment within a doc.

Use voice comments with a tool like Mote (justmote.me) for comments for a personal touch of voice

Other tools that integrate nicely with Classroom that can foster discussion:

  • Flipgrid: Video replies.
  • Synth: Audio discussion tool. Audio replies.

What’s your purpose? Group work, collaboration, cooperative learning?

Jenny O’Sullivan (Boca Raton, Florida) -- My name is Jenny and I am the K-5 STEAM teacher at A.D. Henderson University School in Boca Raton, FL. As an elementary specialist, I have 18 classes. To avoid having my younger students type out their very long email addresses each time to log into Google Classroom on the STEAM Lab computers, I have assigned each student to a computer. My problem is that Google only saves 10 email addresses for quick login. Is there an extension, hack, or work around to allow us to save all 18 addresses for quick login?

Google News and Updates Featured Content Google for Education EDU in 90 YouTube channel Google for Education Facebook page Google Teacher Tribe Mailbag Kathleen Mathis (Annandale, Virginia) shared,

I wanted to offer two ideas that tie in to your bell ringer tips in Episode 43. Now that my school is 1:1, I have my students do warm-ups in an interactive journal using Google Slides. It used to take me forever to grade their paper journals and I always dreaded it...until this year. I now collect the online "journals" once a quarter and I use the Doctopus add-on with a Goobric to grade them. This has saved me a lot of time AND increased how much feedback I'm able to give them. Win win! Also, I've used their bell-ringer/warm-up journals to review vocabulary words. I randomly assigned students a vocabulary word and asked them to find an image that show the words meaning. Next, students put their slides in presentation mode, then do a gallery walk. As they view each other's work, they write down the vocabulary word they think is being depicted on a sticky note next to each laptop. When students return to their seat, they'll know whether their picture sufficiently showed their assigned word's meaning based on their peer's anonymous feedback. Plus, it gets them up and moving. :)

Alan Appleby - I listened to episode 59 about google photos, and tried to put an animation into a slideshow. We'll have kids working on change concept soon, as well as building things. Both of these give us some scope for using the animations as you described.

But, while I can embed an animation into slides, it does not 'animate' in present mode or when published to the web. Can you tell me if I'm doing something wrong, or if we just have to leave the present mode to see animations like this?

Matt Dill & Stacy Larsen - How do I prevent students from searching on other tabs in their browser for their answers, while taking a quiz on a Google Form on another?

Neil Gibbs - Is there a way of having some pages set up to be portrait and some set up to be landscape? I have an E-Book that my students are working on through Google Classroom, the Google docs, I have set up, just seems to allow the document to be either portrait or landscape and not a combination. This is really frustrating as there are tables that work well in Landscape and questions and diagrams which are suited to portrait.

  2. Marsha Ratzel (Kansas) -- loves the podcast, follow intently! … used arts and culture link for space for sixth-grade science classes … her question: they use Chromebooks, love things like Expeditions but don’t have access to virtual reality goggles … anyways to do virtual reality trips in 360 view to learn about geography? Would be NGSS standards for middle school.
  1. Kimberly Bender (Pennsylvania) -- loves the show, listens when she walks her dog, Google Photos: started making albums, thought about how could put together something at end of the year
  2. Linda Mackay -- I’m such a fan of your show! I have one quick question that maybe you can help with: my students are telling me that their Google Classroom reminders are coming to them after midnight. Is there somewhere I can adjust this?
  3. Chris Powers, Madison Wisc. -- In slides, is there a way to animate an object to follow a lined pathway? I'm a music teacher and want to animate an object like a bird, butterfly, bee, or kite, etc to show a voice pathway. I'd like it to go up and down (diagonally to show time and pitch) and even a loop if possible but I am not sure how to make an object follow a path. I figured the GTT and the swiss army knife of Google should be able to do this, right? Thanks!
  4. Elisabeth Schaap (The Netherlands) -- Just started using team-drive with my colleague who teaches in a parallel class. We share files that we want to give to our students using Classroom. But, we found out that we can not share files through Classroom straight from our team-drive. Firs,t we have to make a copy and place it in our own drive and from there we can share it using Classroom. Do you know why? Is there a logical reason? Any idea if Google will change this in the future? --
  5. Abbey Thomas (Alabama) -- Google Slides, trying to embed a video that’s not a YT video … is there a way to do that? Add-on, extension?
  1. Bruce Reicher (New Jersey) - Matt and Kasey -- I have a unique way I use Google Slides. Our school does a live tv show every morning. I have one slide deck that is the script and another slide deck for graphics and videos we play on the show. It's awesome to be able to share the script with students so they can practice before they come on the show. It also make life easier for me because I can update the script every day. In the past, I created Powerpoint slides and printed them every morning. Over the past 10 years, my students have produced over 1,000 live shows. That was a lot of paper printed for the script in the past. We now have a 1:1 with Chromebooks and no more printing :)

Love the show and keep up the great work - Bruce Here's the script - https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1es6y9EZjmHWPRwNd4muyMYpsvIY7YBvnwvJtfrfKlYU/edit?usp=sharing and Here is the graphic and video and credit run down -https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1nYM9vRr1ryRYThYUPqeD6NWTGGZJ7S5ScTrAA6D4V3c/edit?usp=sharing

Did you design it yourself? I hope you do not mind, I will be presenting and sharing some of your blogs at our next teacher tech training in Feb! Keep up the good work, I find your passion for educational technology to be exuberant!

09 Apr 2018Google Sheets Add-Ons - GTT05000:32:49
Google News and Updates Featured Content Sheets Add-Ons
  • What are add-ons?
    • Add-ons run inside Google Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Forms, but they're built by developers like you and tie into over a dozen Google services without even spinning up a server.
    • Add-ons are built with Apps Script, a server-side JavaScript platform that requires zero setup.
  • Where to find them in Sheets?
  • Connection to forms
    • Google Sheets and Google Forms work hand-in-hand. The data collected from your form is placed in a Sheet where you can then manipulate results, perform additional calculations, and even create mailmerges using any number of add-ons.

  • Bailee Sandsmark (email), a 6th-grade middle school PE teacher asks, "

I’d like to send out a Sheets template to all 250 of my students for them to individually track their fitness testing data, but then I would like to have an efficient way for them to share that info with me so that I can see all of my students' data in one sheet. Having to access 250 different sheets makes my head spin. Currently, my students track this data on a piece of paper, but it would be great for them to have a digital copy that can travel with them all three years of middle school so they can truly track their growth and so that their 7th and 8th grade PE teachers can see the data as well.

I’m hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction of an extension that would do the trick."

As the student scrolls down, he can click on these fraction problems. It brings up a smaller screen with a Google Drawings that can be edited. The student draws on some fractions and types answers. I love it! But I can't seem to recreate this concept. How do you put the editable version of a Google Drawing into a Google Doc (or slide)? Thank you!

21 Nov 2017A Google Assistant in the Classroom - GTT03100:32:40
Google News and Updates Featured Content What does AI/voice assistant do now? What is machine learning?
  • Gathers lots of data, lots of queries, into a huge data set
  • Makes predictions based on that data
  • The more data it gets, the smarter it is
  1. Google Assistant: answers your questions via text or voice, gives you briefings with data you request (weather, time, calendar, news, etc.). Adds things to your Google Keep, calendar, etc. Plays games and asks you trivia questions.
  2. Teachable Machine: Explore how machine learning works. Teach a machine using your camera – live in the browser, no coding required. It learns by training and running neural nets right in the browser. Teach students about machine learning.
  3. Quick, Draw!: Uses machine learning to learn what you’re drawing.
  4. Autodraw: Draw a picture and Autodraw converts it into clipart created by artists.
  5. Mystery Animal: A Voice Experiment, it chooses an animal and plays 20 questions for you to guess what it is.
  6. Story Speaker: Create a choose your own adventure-style story in Google Docs. It’s like you’re coding/creating an AI game run by Google Assistant.
  7. Quill Connect: Uses machine learning to help students combine sentences. Aligned with curriculum standards for second through seventh grades.
How can AI/voice assistant help us right now?
  • Answering questions
    • what is the weather for tomorrow?
    • what is the capital of Alaska?
    • what is 37 times 414?
    • tell me a riddle.
    • Tell me something interesting.
    • set a ten-minute timer.
  • Adding to notes for later
  • Keeping us from doing repetitive stuff
What’s the future of AI/voice assistant in the classroom?
  • Setting expectations in the classroom
  • Let them play and understand what it is capable of but set meaningful expectations on how it will be used for learning, not just telling jokes.
  • Rotate the use a job/role for the class - AI Leader of the Day.

The Chrome Squad is an elite group of students at Royse City High School that provide tech support and learning opportunities for both students and teachers. In the four years the Chrome Squad has been in operation they have evolved--developing new teams and products to serve not only Royse City ISD, but others districts as well. The Chrome Squad has helped over 50 other districts across the US start student internships, spoken at conferences like TCEA, and have been able to spend time at the Googleplex and Google HQ2 in Austin, Tx. The Chrome Squad is made of twenty-one 10th-12th graders working across 8 teams.

There have been a few changes since the Chrome Squad was last on the Google Teacher Tribe Episode 8.  They have started a podcast that focuses on the great things teachers are doing and the ways a teacher can better empower learners with technology.  You can find the teaser for the podcast on iTunes (Google Play will be coming soon).

The Chrome Squad also adopted a goal setting process used by companies like Google called OKRs, or Objectives-Key Results, as well as Design SPRINTS.  This has allowed the Chrome Squad to design and project plan an entire year’s worth of work in a few days during the summer.

Google “Spark”: When I first learned of Google Docs and Google Drive it was amazing that student documents could be accessed across multiple devices without the need for a floppy disk or thumb drive to bring to the computer lab. This was especially key when I got a class set of iPads. This may have been the gateway, but it was still just word processing.  The major sparks were realizing the options for varied expression, ability to use Doctopus to distribute templates to the learner and provide digital feedback via comments.

Beth Cohen (Pennsylvania) -- HI Matt and Kasey! I love all the tips, tricks, and resources you share! Every year our Freshmen complete a unit on Academic Integrity. We have been using Moodle, which includes a self-grading quiz that lets students know whether they have achieved the minimum score and prompts them to review the resources and retake the quiz if they didn't pass. We will have GAFE instead of Moodle next year, so I want to reproduce the quiz in Forms, but I can't figure out how to set a minimum passing grade and notify the student whether he/she passed at the end. I could use branching and direct students back to the resources after every wrong response so that ultimately everyone ends up with a perfect score, but I'm hoping for a final pass or fail submission response. Hope you have some ideas! Thanks, Beth

In episode 10 you asked about ways for people to submit files through Google Forms if they are outside of your domain. Since that feature is limited to use within your domain, here is a different idea that districts may want to try if they need parents or other folks to be able to submit files which get automatically saved to your Drive...

An option to consider might be to use the "Save Emails and Attachments" add-on for Google Sheets:

You can see full details on how it works here:

Basically instead of using a Form, people would send an email to a specific address (I would suggest setting up one specifically for this purpose like dropbox@myschool.org). Emails sent to this address will trigger the add-on. Any attachments they send would be saved into a Google Drive folder you specify (which could be shared with the appropriate people for access).

I have a 3rd student that took what I taught her about using G Suite, specifically from your episode #9 about Google forms and applied it to an "Entrepreneurial" venture! She created a Google form titled- "Eliana's Summer Pet Sitting and Mail Collection Service" then she had her mother post it to her friends to collect potential customers' information in a Google Sheet. As you can imagine, I was beaming with pride and thought you would like to hear about this real-life application being made at such a young age. This is proof that if we spend the time to train our kids to use these creative digital tools, they will do remarkable things!

I spent this school year teaching and developing a curriculum for an elementary version of a "Chrome Squad" for our building. My goal was to develop a resource to train kids to use G Suite using basic language that kids can understand. I have a "Kids Teaching Kids" type of program which has now evolved into my kids actually teaching our busy teachers to use Google tools as well.

I started with 10 kids and now have over 30 kids in our Chrome Squad. If you are interested, I can get you more information on my ebook coming out over the summer- "Chromebooks for kids- Training your Elementary Chrome Squad."

08 Apr 2019Apps That Integrate with Google Classroom - GTT08200:36:51
Google News and Updates Featured Content

Google Classroom is one of the nicest kids on the playground of education technology. There are many apps and websites that want to play with Google and Google is happy to play with so many of the other apps and sites that are enjoying the nice days and time to play.

Matt and Kasey share and discuss some great tools that are fine on their own but when they play Google we never want edtech recess to end!

Resources
  • Duolingo -- Many teachers and even entire governments around the world already view Duolingo as the perfect blended learning companion for their language classrooms. Duolingo lessons give each student personalized feedback and practice, preparing them to get the most out of classroom instruction.
  • Quizlet -- Quizlet makes simple learning tools that let you study anything. Start learning today with flashcards, games and learning tools — all for free. (See also 6 new ways to play a Quizlet Live game)
  • Quizizz -- This integration makes it seamless for teachers to assign Quizizz games to their class. Students can join a Quizizz game with one click and all their performance data is sent back to Classroom. (See also Gameshow Classroom: Comparing Kahoot!, Quizizz, Quizlet Live and Gimkit)
  • Edpuzzle: Make any video your lesson. Pick a video, add your magical touch and track your students’ understanding. With the EDpuzzle integration, teachers can automatically import all Classroom courses and students at sign up.
  • Flipgrid: Flipgrid is a website that allows teachers to create “grids” of short discussion-style questions that students respond to through recorded videos. Each grid is effectively a message board where teachers can pose a question and their students can post 90-second video responses that appear in a tiled “grid” display. Easily share links to Flipgrids and add them to assignments in Google Classroom. (See also Catch the Flipgrid Fever! 15+ ways to use Flipgrid in your class)
  • Insert Learning: InsertLearning is a Chrome extension that lets you turn websites into interactive lessons. You can add sticky notes, links, videos, discussion questions, multiple choice questions and more! Then easily share your lesson with students in Google Classroom. InsertLearning is featured in my FREE ebook: 18 Challenges for Teachers in 2018 (See also 4 Ways to Blend Learning with InsertLearning.)

Jennifer (New York) -- Mark from Wisconsin asked on episode 80 about turning off spell check to proofread a poorly written letter.

I have an assignment in Literature that requires the students to proofread a poorly written letter (roughly 50 mistakes) and make corrections. Is there a way to turn off Spell Check in the shared document? I have it turned off on the master copy, but when I send it out through Classroom, each of their Chromebooks turns Spell Check back on. Thanks!

Blake (Texas) -- Hey y'all, I'm a 1st-grade teacher in Texas and I listen to GTT on my way to work all the time. Then, I run in my classroom and write down the ideas you have sparked so that I can try them.

One of the ideas is to use slides as kind of an "auto-pilot" for a day when I may need a sub. I have 2 large screens in my room and the idea was to make a slide deck that would walk them through the day. (I've even considered uploading videos of myself teaching the lesson and explaining. Phonics, for example, is a difficult lesson to teach as a sub.) So, the sub walks in and opens the slide deck at 8am. and the slides have instructions/video/example ... the students do the work... and then the slide changes to a yellow background when there are 5 minutes left, then to the next thing on the agenda.

Yea, sounds like a neat thing to try to me too. But I can't use a slide deck because I can't set different times for the auto advance.

That was a long way to ask if you know of a way to set different times for each slide. I know I could use another presentation app but we live on the G suite at my school so sharing would be easier if I could find a work around on slides.

Thanks guys. Y'all are awesome! I'm off to drink my sweet tea before the fun times get back from P.E.

  • Make it into a video with Screencastify and advance as you’d like? Then play the video?
  • Duplicate slides and set auto-advance times for 1 min each

Jenna (Cape Town, South Africa) -- Loves “swiss army knife”. Extra curricula -- wants to use iPads and Google tools (Slides). Used to create ebooks for kindergarten aged students to read. Number books, counting books. As part of art studies, students painted with watercolors, took pictures. Used the crop tool within Slides to crop the images to different shapes. Use the shapes to compile a new image (a robot). Group all shapes together. Different versions of the robot that can be counted. Collab: all can work on the project together.

Here’s a note from Jenna: “Unfortunately, my students are still busy with the ones where they have painted their own backgrounds so I don't have a finished product yet. I've attached the one that we used to practice the skill. We did it so that they'd know what to expect when they started painting. For this one, my students used images from Google and turned the slide deck into an eBook for some of the younger students in the school. Each student worked on a different slide so that each slide had a unique robot which we duplicated for the number on the page.”

Caroline Goodman (Memphis, Tennessee) -- 2 Gmail accounts: a .org for faculty and staff, .net domain for students. Teachers frequently create docs, sheets, slides, forms in either one or both accounts. Often, files get lost between the two. Sometimes teachers aren’t sure if the doc was created with .org or .net account. How can we search between both Google Drive accounts? Extension or app? Type in a search and it’ll search both of them?

  • Quick, Draw! — In this game, you’re given an object/idea to draw and Google’s artificial intelligence tries to guess what you’re drawing. It’s a fun introduction to AI for students.
  • AI Duet — “A piano that responds to you.” Google’s artificial intelligence uses tons of data to guess what it should play in response to what you play.
  • Google Trends — Learn what other people are searching for all over the world.
  • Google Earth Time Lapse — This shows what the world looks like as it changes over 20+ years. Watch the time lapse in motion. See the whole earth at once or zoom into your hometown!
  • GeoGuessr — Use context clues to guess where you’ve been dropped in Google Maps. The closer the guess, the more points you earn!
  • Just a Line -- Make simple drawings in AR, then share your creation with a short video.

Student-created Google Forms quizzes: (From 10 ways Google tools can make the end of the year rock)

By using Google Forms (Google’s survey tool), students can create their own quizzes. By turning on the quiz features in the settings gear, students can add immediate feedback for anyone who takes the quiz. This immediate feedback can be WAY more effective than comments written on student papers and passed back to them later. Plus, when students create the quizzes, they’re experiencing the content from a different perspective.

  • Rasa Conklin (Federal Way, WA) -- I created a Google sites for my students to display/ publish their work. I was having each group add a page to the site I created. When YO and DB, who were working on their page all of a sudden were upset because all their work disappeared and DL and IO work appeared on their page and all the other pages. I have a funny feeling that this is due to something small that we did wrong, but I need help. Is there an easy tutorial, or website for step by step directions?  https://sites.google.com/p12fwps.org/build-a-generator/home

  • Carly Black (Ohio) -- Hello, Thank you for the emoji extension tip. I was wondering if you knew a way to add GIFs just as easily? I've been thinking about letting students create literary analysis through a series of GIFs and emojis. The problem is finding the right tools to execute this well. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
  • Matt Jacobson (Galesburg, IL) -- Hi Matt & Kasey! Just listened to E. 53 on the New Gmail. Kasey mentioned that her sidebar appeared quite cluttered with all of the labels and what-not that she uses. I use a lot of labels too, and still, have a lot of labels that used to be folders when our school switched over from Outlook to Gmail. An easy way to clean these up is to go to the Gear Icon, then click Settings, the click Show Only If Unread next to many of your folders. Then, they'll only appear on the left if there is a reply to something you have previously labeled. The trick is to label the message before you reply to it. This works really nifty with the new Snooze feature in the New Gmail. Messages you have Snoozed in the past show up as unread messages in your Inbox, so, if you label it and then Snooze it, that label should "light up" in the left sidebar with an unread message in it when you need to act upon it.

  • 4 New Video Features in Google Slides That Will Make Your Day
  • WORD LENS IN JAPANESE: If you don’t speak Japanese, Tokyo can be a confusing and sometimes daunting place to visit. Even if you make it through the complex subway system, you’ll be faced with street signs, menus or products on supermarket shelves that are only in Japanese.
    • With Word Lens now available in Japanese, you’ll never have to worry about taking a wrong turn on a busy Shibuya street or ordering something you wouldn't normally eat.
    • The Google Translate app already lets you snap a photo of Japanese text and get a translation for it in English. But it’s a whole lot more convenient if you can just point your camera and instantly translate text on the go. With Word Lens, you just need to fire up the Translate app, point your camera at the Japanese text, and the English translations will appear overlaid on your screen—even if you don't have an Internet or data connection. It’s every savvy traveler’s dream!
