13 Apr 2022GBM 99 - The Incredible Impact Of Water On Your Beer, With Martin Brungard01:04:40

When it comes to beer, we tend to think about malt, hops and yeast first without giving water much thought. But, besides holding all these ingredients together in our glass, water has a far greater impact than most of us realize.

My next guest is an expert who helps us better understand why water matters.

Since then they have grown into an international non-profit organized to help women in all capacities of the beer industry. Every March the Pink Boots Society collaborates with beer organizations to brew delicious beer that will raise awareness and funds for scholarships and education for its members. 01 Apr 2020GBM 49 - How to Elevate Your Beer Tasting Ability with Master Cicerone, Rich Higgins01:02:59

When it comes to tasting beer, the most important thing we need to decide is, do we like it, yes or no. But, for those of us who want to take it to the next level, we need to decipher what we are tasting, where those flavors come from and how to pair them to create the best flavor synergy. This is what brewers, beer judges and Cicerones spend their lives focused on. As you can imagine, this is a complex issue that requires education, experience and focus. My next guest has not only literally mastered this, but he has drawn from his experience in the world of wine and beer to create a wealth of resources to teach the rest of us how to taste beer like a Master.

Learning how to really taste beer, to explore it’s depths, to find the connections and draw conclusions about how and with what it was made is an arduous journey. But, for those who are willing to put in the work, the rewards can be exponential. Luckily we have people like Rich Higgins to guide our way.

02 Jan 2019GBM 19 - The Past, Present and Future of Beer with Larry Sidor01:21:54
Age old wisdom tells us to not let our past define us, but instead, let it be our guide. If Sidor’s story tells us anything, it is that the future of beer will be decided by the beer each of us chooses. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jeremy-storton/support

24 May 2023GBM 128 - A New Experience With The Oldest Brewery, with Matthias Ebner of Weihenstephan01:17:37

To get the full Bavarian Beer experience, I find it helpful to go back a thousand years. Without a time machine, we’ll have to visit a brewery nearly as old. My next guest tells us the story of the incredible beer ecosystem that exists just north of Munich in the world’s oldest brewery.

I think it’s fair to say that any brewery with a school and a thousand-year history is one we can take leadership from. If Weihenstephan values being present, being patient, and focuses on quality and culture, then maybe we should give those a second thought as well, don’t you think?

We find great experiences at the intersection of craft and culture. These are the stories of us, of great food and the beer that brings it all together. For the Craft and Culture of Beer, this is episode 128 of Good Beer Matters with brand ambassador, Matthias Ebner of Weihenstephan.

We can see Brazil’s influence on the world through movies, music, sports and more. It was only a matter of time before we started to see beer that was uniquely Brazilian to emerge. Given that this country has such a global impact, what’s next, I wonder.

Every culture has a beer culture, even the ones who aren’t known for their beer. This is because every country has beer, and every beer can open a door to a world we haven’t experienced before. Keep your mind curious, grab yourself a beer and a bite to eat, and go explore.

10 May 2023GBM 127 - Crafting the Dutch Beer Culture, with Michiel Anema of All Kinds of Beers00:57:23

Once upon a time, American brewers traveled to Europe, rediscovered beer, and became inspired. They came home and started the craft beer revolution, disrupting the homogenous macro brew industry. Approximately 30 years later they returned the favor. My next guest tells his story of infusing American Craft into the Dutch beer culture.

It never ceases to amaze me that beer culture is a global thing. As different as we are, we’re still very much alike. But, while trends spread across the planet, those differences inspire us to keep beer interesting and new. I would argue that it’s these differences that connect us together.

We find great experiences at the intersection of craft and culture. These are the stories of us, of great food and the beer that brings it all together.

15 Apr 2020GBM 50 - Guiding Breweries to Better Business with Brewery Consultant, Rio Connelly01:19:27

With more than 8,000 craft breweries, according to the Brewer’s Association, it’s safe to say that we have reached a new high watermark of quality and competition. Long gone are the days when a decent brewer can just open up and succeed without a solid plan. The market for craft beer now demands a brewer must carve out a niche, make superior beer, and run his or her business better. A brewer can be a lot of things, but to be everything at the same time is a spectacular feat of fiction. Like the songs says, sometimes we get by with a little help from our friends.

My next guest decided to step out of his brewer/ owner role and become a guide for startup breweries who are navigating through the challenges of modern craft beer. His goal? To help them succeed where others have failed. I hope you enjoy episode 50 of Good Beer Matters with Brewery Consultant, Rio Connelly.

28 Sep 2022GBM 111 - A Sober Look At Beer & Alcohol, with Spencer Ploessl and Meagen Anderson01:19:50

If you’re listening to this, you probably really love beer. But, beer isn’t always sunshine and roses. I think it’s time for those of us in the industry to acknowledge the dark side of alcohol.

Maybe we’ve fallen victim to the romance of drunken parties and creative hangovers. But in the end of it all, we have to face ourselves in the mirror after a binge. Even worse, we have to face our families, coworkers and the world.

In this edition of Beyond the Beer Stories, my two guests give us a sober look at alcohol in the beer industry.

04 Jan 2023GBM 118 - The Beer Experience in India with Advanced Cicerone®, Anudeep Mutyala00:47:09

When we think about beer and beer culture, our thoughts naturally drift toward the classics and the current global beer hot spots. But, as we look to the future, this is all going to change. My next guest is one of these change-makers, and the first Advanced Cicerone in India.

As we travel the world, or at least watch travel shows from our couch, we gain a sense of other cultures. Like Anthony Bourdain told us, “You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together.” Just make sure you wash it down with a great beer from wherever you are.

18 Jan 2023GBM 119 - For The People And The Beer of Ukraine with Certified Cicerone® and author, Lana Svitankova01:09:32

With the Good Beer Matters Podcast, I intended to keep the stories about beer and not about the news. Sometimes these two intersect. Sometimes there are news stories that are far bigger than beer. This time, however, it’s through the heartache of war, that we find the story of a people and their beer.

For this episode, I need to step out of my usual routine and ask everyone listening to support the end of the war in Ukraine and anywhere else. I’m not naive, bad stuff happens in the world. But there’s a better way to deal with differences. Maybe, just maybe, if we put Ukrainian Golden Ale on the negotiations table, we’d have a better chance.

A great experience lies at the intersection of craft and culture. These are the stories of us, of great food and the beer that brings it all together. For the Craft and Culture of Beer, this is episode 119 of Good Beer Matters with Certified Cicerone® and writer from Ukraine, Lana Svitankova.

New beer is exciting. And, I’m a big proponent of constant improvement. But some things have already been perfected. I believe that when we revisit some of these beers and classic styles from the past, it will give us a better idea of where we ought to go in the future.

Some of these companies I’m already familiar with and I personally know they’re doing great things.

But, some I recently discovered and thought were cool enough to share with you.

Oh, and by the way, I have not been compensated by any company to produce this series. I simply want to help good things get out into the world.

Why? Because Good Beer Matters, of course.

28 Oct 2020GBM 64 - Drinking Beer and Saving Boobs with Beer 4 Boobs Founder, Lisa White00:45:24

Breast cancer is one of the most common, yet treatable forms of cancer that affects women, and some men. If you are in a group of 8 women, at least one of you will be diagnosed with breast cancer. This may sound intimidating. But there are many organizations that help promote coping with, and curing this disease. My next guest founded one of these organizations and serves up some delicious beer along the way.

A breast cancer diagnosis doesn’t have to be devastating. Early detection increases your chances of beating the disease. So, grab a good beer and include your partner in your self-exam. The relationships and experiences we’re trying to build are much better when everyone is alive and well enough to enjoy them.

This is the end of season three of Good Beer Matters. But I’d love to hear about your favorite episodes and who you’d like to hear from in season 4. Stay well and we’ll see you soon when we return in 2021.

02 Sep 2020GBM 60 - DefendingThe Right to Choose Good Beer with Bo Jensen, Chairman of the European Beer Consumers Union (EBCU)00:43:19

There are many things that influence our decisions as beer drinkers, branding, advertisements, flavor, etc. Most of us take for granted the wealth of beers available to us everywhere we go. But, what about those things that influence our decisions that are completely outside our control? What about the nefarious business practices such as price undercutting or tied houses that are meant to gain control over the drinkers and monopolize the system for the sake of profits? As some of the guests on the Good Beer Matters Podcast have shared, there are places around the world where these practices still exist. But, if you’re like me, you love your beer and you’re willing to stand up for something better.

My next guest has been leading consumer rights groups for decades and wants to give both good beer and power back to the people.

16 Aug 2023GBM 134 - Flavour Logic and the Australian Beer Experience with Briony Liebich00:58:03

Why does beer flavor matter so much? I mean, as long as it tastes good, what else is important? Can we actually get a sense of place through flavor? My next guest seems to think so and is here to share this, and Australian culture through the flavor of beer.

In his book “Tasting Beer”, Randy Mosher tells us, “Like any aspect of a consciously lived life, enjoying beer to the fullest takes education, experience, and a proper frame of mind.” That’s why educators like Briony are so important. Without them, a beer is just a beer, which would be a shame, because it is so much more.

We find great experiences at the intersection of craft and culture. These are the stories of us, of great food and the beer that brings it all together. For the Craft and Culture of Beer, this is episode 134 of Good Beer Matters with Certified Cicerone® and Sensory Analyst, Briony Liebich.

I wish you and I could have been there, sailing the Straits of Florida toward Cuba, when the idea came to my next guest. An idea that serves a niche, solves a problem, and promotes better living. My next guest tells the origin story of the raddest fast-growing lifestyle beer brand today.

Beer is like a tool. And there’s the right tool for every job. Sometimes we need a high-gravity Barrel Aged blah-de-blah. 24 Jun 2020GBM 55 - A Deeper Understanding of Beer Styles with Master Judge, Randy Scorby01:04:30

The Beer Judge Certification Program, or BJCP, works to categorize the world’s beer styles so that homebrewers can submit their brews for feedback on how well they hit the targets. These same beer style guidelines have become widely accepted as the go-to style authority because they are specific and also give us a way to communicate about beer. However, defining these styles is quite a challenge due to natural variation within a style. Even more, some styles pose another challenge because they are really similar and are differentiated only by geography, culture, or slight nuance. My next guest returns to the Good Beer Matters Podcast from episode 6 where he taught us how to be a better taster. In this episode, we discuss what we can learn from the BJCP and how to discern the difference between very similar styles.

05 Aug 2020GBM 58 - Inside The World of Trappist Beers, with Father Isaac of Spencer Abbey01:16:14

There are men so devoted to their faith, they sequester themselves from the outside world. In order to sustain themselves and give to charity, they make a variety of products. Luckily for us, some of these products are the best beers in the world.

Trappist beers, as we know them, have been around for close to a hundred years. They have become a hallmark of quality, flavor and especially good for pairing with food. Many secular breweries make their own versions, called Abbey-style beers, but there is still an allure and a demand for tasting the real thing straight from the source. In recent years the number of Certified Trappist Breweries nearly doubled, and with it, some new variations in old traditions.

My next guest honored us with one of his first podcast interviews to tell us about the inner workings and process of becoming America’s first and only Trappist Brewery.

01 Mar 2023GBM - 122 Defining a Beer Destination with Karen and Kent Killough of Vista Brewing01:06:39

Many of us are fortunate to have to choose between a number of breweries near our home. And, beer travel has not only become a thing, but planning destinations around access to beer is a normal criterion. But, with good beer becoming so ubiquitous, how do we find those out of the way and worth-staying-for-awhile experiences that stand out above the rest? My next guests have a tip or two to share with you when it comes to seeking out a truly great beer destination.

There are beers perfect for every day drinking and there are some that are better reserved for special occasions. The same goes for breweries. Some are great for any ole occasion, and some are better for truly memorable experiences. If you haven’t yet experienced the difference, then I urge you to put Vista Brewing, south of Austin Texas on your beer bucket list.

A great experience lies at the intersection of craft and culture. These are the stories of us, of great food and the beer that brings it all together. For the Craft and Culture of Beer, this is episode 122 of Good Beer Matters with Karen and Kent Killough of Vista Brewing

12 May 2021GBM 75 - Better Beer Marketing with Julie Rhodes of Not Your Hobby Marketing01:08:34

In the old days of marketing, luck was a significant aspect of a successful campaign filled with jingles and interruptions. Now, we’ve learned to ad value in the form of branded content that works better for your beer business. My next guest is a coach and a guide who navigates us through the world of content marketing.

Opening a brewery or taproom and showing up is a great first step to a successful beer business. But, well branded, content marketing can take you where you want it to go. It’s efficient, effective, and can greatly improve your business if it’s done well. Thank you to Julie for, once again, helping us raise the bar in beer.

22 Jul 2020GBM 57 - Pairing Beer With The Pro, Julia Herz00:53:56

Learning to pair beer with food is a lifelong pursuit that is all about the journey, not the destination. A great pairing has a way of elevating the experience, the discussion, the memory, and with some luck, the relationships with those around us.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time learning, thinking about and experimenting with food and beer pairing. Not everything works. Sometimes we inadvertently create a zing-boom-dud effect. That’s when we need help learning what went wrong and what to do about it. My next guest is one of the leaders in the food and beer pairing vanguard. And she wants to help you create better pairings.

20 Sep 2021GBM Special Series from Craft Brewers Conference 2021 - Glacier Hops00:07:48

Every year the Brewer’s Association puts together the Craft Beer Conference, or CBC, as a means for industry professionals to continue their education, network with peers and improve quality and performance.

I attended this year’s CBC as a member of the media, and because there are plenty of beer pros that didn’t make it, I wanted to share a few of the many exhibitors that I think you ought to know about.

Some of these companies I’m already familiar with and I personally know they’re doing great things.

But, some I recently discovered and thought were cool enough to share with you.

Either way, I hope you enjoy this taste of CBC 2021.

Oh, and by the way, I have not been compensated by any company to produce this series. I simply want to help good things get out into the world.

Why? Because Good Beer Matters, of course.

Thank you for listening.

Cheers.

18 Mar 2020GBM 48 - Exploring The Past, Present and Future of Women in Beer with Brewster, Tiffany Davidson01:03:32

Today women operate in practically every facet of the brewing industry, but it is still more common to see men on the brew deck than women. This was not always the case. Centuries ago women were the ones who brewed for their household and their community. Somewhere along the line this changed and now women are finally integrating back into a role they held for centuries. This is due in part to groups that provide opportunities to women in the beer industry.

In this episode, we continue honoring the women of beer by exploring the past, present and future of women in brewing with my next guest who is a female brewer, a historian of women’s Studies and Vice President of Fermenta, a women’s craft collective.

17 Mar 2021GBM 71 - Curating a Smarter Draft Program and Business with Lori Bolin of Brewlogix01:19:29

Strategies for selling draft beer range from constantly rotating good and bad sellers to keeping the same lineup for decades. One thing most pubs have in common though is that very few can tell you exactly how well each draft line is moving. My next guest has a multi-layered solution to help pub owners pay their bills, educate their staff and delight their guests.

Running a beer business is tough enough, even without a pandemic or myriad other challenges we may face. But there are ways to work smarter, to make life easier, and to turn guests into raving fans. I’ve partnered with Brewlogix because I believe the solutions they provide will help you thrive whatever may come your way.

14 Aug 2019GBM 35 - How Overcoming Challenges Continues To Shape Craft Beer With Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada Brewing00:53:50

I read a quote online recently that goes, “Challenges are what makes life interesting, and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” It made me think back to the early days before the craft beer movement was a thing. In the 60s and 70s home brewing was illegal, ingredients were hard to come by, equipment was built by hand, information was scarce and nobody drank dark, flavorful beer. To say that our early craft beer pioneers surmounted some steep challenges is a bit watered down. I had the opportunity to talk to one of those early pioneers, Ken Grossman, who is a brewing icon, founder, and owner of Sierra Nevada Brewing. Join us as he shares his thoughts on how overcoming challenges has shaped the past, the present and will even shape the future of Craft Beer.

13 May 2020GBM 52 - Exploring South Africa’s Craft Beer with Certified Cicerone, Lucy Corne01:08:05

For a travel writer who has lived in different parts of the world, settling down in one place for a length of time makes a statement. When that person becomes both a beer writer and educator in South Africa’s emerging beer culture, she makes yet a different and even more profound statement.

I’ve never been to South Africa, but when I consider it, I think of Nelson Mandela, cooking around a braai, and surfing the perfect wave at Cape St. Francis. But, I generally don’t think of craft beer. All that is changing as South Africa is becoming known for hops and an emerging craft beer culture.

My next guest is a writer on a mission to tell the stories of South Africa’s craft beer movement and to educate others in her country about the abundant and nuanced world behind every beer.

22 Nov 2023GBM 141 - The Story and the Beer of Belgium, with Breandán Kearney01:05:03

Belgium holds one of the richest beer cultures in the world. But, with a history and culture as diverse as theirs, beer is only the beginning. My next guest is a master storyteller who guides us even deeper into the world beyond the beer we already know and love.

Because I haven’t yet traveled to Belgium myself, It’s easy for me to make assumptions about the culture based on my experience with the beer. But, we must remember that beer can serve as a tool and a doorway. It’s not designed to answer questions. It’s meant to elicit them.

We find great experiences at the intersection of craft and culture. These are the stories of us, of great food and the beer that brings it all together. For the Craft and Culture of Beer, this is episode 141 of Good Beer Matters with Breandán Kearney of Belgian Smaak.

17 Jul 2019GBM 33 - Improve Your Beer Palate and Your QA Program with Draught Lab Co-Founder, Lindsay Barr00:58:15

Decades ago, when craft beer was the wild west of flavor and ingredients were hard to come by, assuming someone knew what to do with them, studying the quality of beer was unheard of. Sure, the big breweries probably had food scientists in their employ, but I’ll bet you a beer that was to ensure consistency for the sake of revenue. The small brewer’s who tinkered in their garages with salvaged dairy equipment back then couldn’t afford labs and likely relied on tasting alone to evaluate new beer. This school of hard knocks approach helped later generations brew smarter and to finally learn what beer could taste like.

Every brewery, no matter how small, needs a sensory program so that bar patrons won’t become the QA team by default. Thanks to Draughtlab, the education and tools are far more accessible to small breweries and aficionados than they have ever been.

Our next guest is a sensory scientist who spent nearly a decade at New Belgium Brewing. She now helps breweries large and small set up sensory programs and to taste all the bad beer so we consumers won’t have to.

I hope you enjoy episode 33 of Good Beer Matters with Sensory Scientist and Co-Founder of Draughtlab, Lindsay Barr
