29 Aug 2023I AM NOT WELL: Death, Depression, and Getting Dumped01:01:12

In the days after your loved one's death, did anyone say to you, "You're so strong" or another variation on that theme? If so, how did it make you feel? Jaj's husband C.J. passed away one year ago Sunday and on this one-year anniversary, she's feeling very different than she thought she would.

She is sick of being strong and she's tired of being an inspiration...and she's sad. To top it off, she got dumped...and we didn't even get to tell you she was dating. Strength in the context of grief is much different than most accepted definitions. Doing simple tasks like getting up, taking care of others, and making sure life moves forward is brave as hell, but it feels like the opposite. Jaj is in a funk and she's sick of being an inspiration for people and being strong. It may be one year later but we're just now learning that healing and feeling 'good as new' is a much longer and tougher road than we anticipated.

But maybe the biggest lesson we learned over the past year? That sometimes showing weakness is the strongest thing of all.

05 Sep 2023Girl Mathing Our Way to Feeling Good As New00:40:44

Hot on the heels of girl dinner comes girl math: a strategy for justifying large or unnecessary purchases. And while some people have shamed this trend as enabling overspending, girl math is just not that serious. For real. It's simply our silly way of justifying those purchases that we were going to make anyway. Instead of feeling shame about indulging every once in a while, girl math allows us to luxuriate in a new cashmere coat that we got with a gift card - which means it was basically free. Listen in as we girl math our way to feeling good as new.

We discuss her journey, how she worked her way through various passions, and how her belief in her vision and leaning into her abilities has allowed her to create one success after another. She and her partner, Brooke Anderson have created a brand that’s well known and has thrived (despite opening right before the pandemic hit) due to their dedication to continued education, setting and maintaining industry standards (both Emily and Brooke are national trainers for 2 of the largest medical aesthetic companies in their industry),  and developing a culture of natural-looking aesthetic enhancements. We get to the bottom of celebrity faces and where they go wrong, what treatments to skip, and we find out if she’s really determining how many units of Botox we need as she’s talking to people. Medical aesthetic enhancements are a hot topic but we love that this is something people can indulge in to help them feel good as new!

19 Sep 2023How To Love Yourself00:39:05

Name 5 things you don't currently love about yourself and most of us will have no problem rattling them off. But try naming 5 things we love. Well, that list isn't so easy for most of us. We like to think of self-love as a practice, not a destination. There is no finish line you cross when you officially love yourself. It’s also not the same thing as being “in love” with yourself - there's a fine line between being confident and not cocky. But at the end of the day, we think loving who we are is done by giving ourselves grace and showing ourselves the same leeway you give others and we bet you'll feel good as new before long.

In today’s episode we’re talking about something pretty massive that happened in Rylee and Josh’s life recently and the feelings that came along with it. And it had us thinking, are we looking at the end of things as failure or are we looking at the end of one thing as an opportunity to pivot and do something new and better? 12 Dec 2023The Love of Community in the Face of Loss w/Alin Shoenrock01:02:20

When Alin Shoenrock drove by the police cars and emergency vehicles in her neighborhood, it would be a few hours before she would learn that her daughter, Sienna, was the victim of that terrible scene. "She didn't make it," quickly became the words that Alin would unbelievingly tell other loved ones as her own grief overwhelmed her. It's been 6 weeks and Alin sat down with Rylee and Jaj to talk about her journey through grief, how it's affected their family, the community that rallied, and the outpouring of love that has her feeling Good As New.

19 Dec 20231 Year Down00:46:30

One year ago tomorrow we started this podcast. Rylee was a super fresh newlywed and Jaj was deep in the trenches of loss after becoming newly widowed. We look back over the highs and the lows, our favorite episodes, and talk about how starting this podcast has been therapeutic and cathartic. We're healing, we're happy, and if this year has taught us anything it is to hug your people, and then hug them again. We love you.

10 Jan 2024Ins & Outs of 202400:50:47

In the final days of 2023, social media was overrun with predictions for the year ahead that ranged from hemlines to dating red flags. These personal manifestos were shared as if we’re all paid for our opinions and trend-setting views but in truth, our ins and outs are simply a public declaration of what we’re no longer putting up with, how we’re promising to treat ourselves and others better, and our personal aspirations. And as always, at the top of our list is to hug your people…and then hug them again.

16 Jan 2024What’s New With You00:54:08

Each week, we ask each other “what’s new with you?” We do this because it’s important to check in with your friends. Not only does it give your loved ones a chance to share what’s going on in their life, it tells the other person that you love them enough to ask about what they’re going through. So this week, it’s your turn. We asked you what’s new with you and you guys shared the good and the bad. The Good As New Community is a special one and we want you to know that we love you and we want to share in your highs and your lows. Even if you didn’t share, we invite you to listen in and to hug your people, and then hug them again - because you just never know what someone is going through.

23 Jan 2024Everyday Etiquette00:48:32

There's nothing worse than a person who isn't socially aware. You know the type: they use the treadmill next to you even when others are free, at the airport, they stand way too close to the baggage carousel,  and they don't use their blinker when driving.

While we might be part of the problem (guilty of the very social faux pas we discuss in today's episode) we haven't got time for self-reflection – there's an event to plan and merch that might not be enough for everyone.

Today's episode is a whirlwind tour of everyday absurdities and a reminder that life is weird, people are weirder, and sometimes, you just have to laugh about it.

12 Mar 2024Madison Fisher: Sexually Assaulted at 1100:58:53

**Trigger Warning** This episode discusses sexual assault.

She has a well-known family and her children are beloved by so many. But Madison Fisher’s own experiences as a child who dealt with unwanted attention from adults and a survivor of sexual assault has made her a hyper vigilant parent and a voice for those without one. In our latest podcast episode, we engage in a deeply important and sensitive conversation about the crucial need to protect our children from sexual assault. The scars left by such experiences are not just physical, but deeply psychological, often shrouded in unwarranted shame and silence. It's vital to understand the immense courage it takes for victims to come forward, and the complex emotions they navigate. We delve into why it's essential to educate our children on the importance of speaking up, recognizing inappropriate behavior, and knowing they have a safe space with trusted adults. This episode is a call to action for all adults to be vigilant, supportive, and proactive in safeguarding our children's innocence and well being. Tune in to hear Madison’s powerful story.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual assault, please see the resources below:

1. **Local Law Enforcement**: One of the primary steps can be reporting to the local police department. This is crucial for the possibility of criminal investigation and legal action against the perpetrator.

2. **National Sexual Assault Hotline**: In the United States, individuals can contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) or use their online chat service. The hotline provides confidential support and can guide survivors through the process of reporting and seeking help.

3. **Hospitals and Health Clinics**: Medical professionals can treat injuries, provide emergency contraception and STI prevention, and collect forensic evidence through a rape kit. They can also report the assault to the authorities with the victim's consent.

4. **Victim Services Agencies**: Local or regional victim services agencies offer counseling, legal advocacy, and assistance in navigating the reporting process.

5. **Schools or Universities**: For assaults that occur on campus or involve students, most educational institutions have a Title IX coordinator or a similar official responsible for handling reports of sexual assault and harassment.

6. **Workplace Human Resources Department**: If the assault is related to the workplace or involves colleagues, reporting to the HR department can initiate an internal investigation and support processes.

It's important for survivors to know they're not alone, and there are resources and individuals ready to support them through this process. Each country and region has specific services, so it's beneficial to look for local resources that can provide immediate and tailored assistance.

August 7th, 2020 started out as a beautiful day. Jazlyn and her husband Shad  took their friends and two of their sons for a ride in Shad’s plane to show off the beautiful county they live in from way up high.

What started as a fun day with friends quickly took a turn as the plane literally fell from the sky. Guided by a still small voice, protected in prayer, and the first of many miracles to follow, every passenger made it out alive. But just barely.

Nothing can ever prepare you for life after you survive a plane crash. In fact, Jazlyn still struggles to wrap her mind around what happened most days. But her story is one of compassion, true love and the real meaning of service. Join us as Jazlyn recounts the day that irrevocably changed her life and the lives of so many others.

Not death-inducing, nothing requiring an epipen. A low-level allergy that would deter us from getting too much of a good thing. 18 Jun 2024This Changed Me Forever00:39:10

There is a particular sort of pause — a small, electric interval — that comes immediately before you make a choice. This strange split-second where you freeze, reflect, take stock, and move forward.

These instances are important: it's in these seconds that we exercise our greatest form of agency. We take responsibility for the shape of our narratives. We remind ourselves of the massive scope of our power. Whether embarking on our first solo trip or coming out to a loved one, these moments often become turning points in our lives.

Did CJ pause before he climbed into the truck that would forever separate him from his family? And you've heard from Jaj frequently about how that moment forever changed her life and by extension, the lives of those who love them.

Some things are big, some are small, but all are meaningful. We asked you about the moments that have shaped and changed the way you think, love, feel, and ultimately, live. One thing is super clear: from near-death experiences to moving across the world, your experiences have definitely shaped you into truly remarkable individuals.

Well, well, well, look who’s back! It’s Riley and Jaj, your trusty hosts who apparently forget they even have a podcast when summer hits. But hey, after the best girls' night movie date ever (70 of you showed up, no biggie), we’re here to break it all down—complete with tears, popcorn, and some unexpected male fans (cough John cough).

We’re spilling all the tea on the movie drama, the books, and—oh yes—the Blake Lively outfit fiasco (who okayed that wardrobe?!). Plus, what’s up with the actors stirring the pot? Domestic violence themes? PR gone wild? We unpack it all with our usual snark and a few side-eyes.

But that’s not all! We chat about sinking jet skis at Lake Powell, navigating the chaos of back-to-school, and gasp actually being excited for fall. Yep, we're "fall girlies" through and through—even if that just means pumpkin everything.

Whether you’re dragging your feet back to routine or still daydreaming about summer, you’ll relate to this wild ride. Tune in, laugh with us, and grab a snack because, well, food is life.

08 Oct 2024Alexa Norton from @GriefShine00:58:36

We accidentally went to the gym, battled kid colds, and managed to survive a week of couch potato life—yay us! But the real star of the show? Our guest, Alexa Norton from @GriefShine. Alexa has built an entire platform about shining through the grief after losing her dad at 23. Even after experiencing this loss, she somehow managed to turn the darkest of times into something a little brighter and hopeful that has helped thousands (including Jaj) shine despite sometimes overwhelming waves of grief. We discuss loss in this episode, and Alexa shares her sweet insights on dealing with grief, even if you're not the one going through it. 15 Oct 2024Nichole Speirs: Elevating Spaces with House West Design00:57:57

This week’s episode dives into the world of high-end interiors with none other than Nichole Speirs, co-founder of Utah’s premier design house, House West Design. If you think interior design is just about picking the perfect pillow, think again. Nikki shares how she and her team create entire homes from the ground up—starting with architecture and ending with lighting the final candle.

From flipping floor plans to crafting jaw-dropping second homes on a man-made lake (yes, you read that correctly), Nikki gives us the lowdown on designing the homes you wish you could vacation in. Oh, and forget those Instagram-perfect aesthetics—she is all about ensuring your space isn’t just pretty but also calm enough to keep your nervous system from short-circuiting.

Nikki shares her rise from a one-woman show to partnering up for design domination, working with clients whose budgets seem to know no bounds. Spoiler alert: It's not always smooth sailing (or should we say skiing?), but the results? Worth every sleepless night.

For anyone who’s ever debated whether flocked trees are overrated or wants to elevate their seasonal decor game (hot tip: stock up on those Costco garlands), this episode is a masterclass in blending cozy, chic, and functionality without losing your design soul.

Listen in for the scoop on the latest design trends and why big scale is always better. Your home—and your Pinterest boards—will thank you.

22 Oct 2024Seasonal Scaries00:36:07

It’s chaotic vibes, and fall feels as we bring a little “bring your kids to work” day to the mic. From debating the insanity of never-ending school breaks (how do working parents manage?) to dissecting the pop culture rabbit hole of Aspen Ovard’s viral TikTok breakdown, it’s clear: we're here for the drama. You’ll get the tea on Parker and Aspen’s not-so-quiet divorce, conspiracy theories surrounding Liam Payne’s sudden fame spiral, and why Chick-fil-A’s latest menu hack is surprisingly divisive. Spoiler alert: Josh is not here for the pimento cheese.

But don’t worry, it’s not all celeb gossip and fast food critiques—we're letting you in on our own Halloween plans (yes, someone’s going as Scotty Scheffler in an orange jumpsuit—no further questions) and sharing the most creative costume ideas submitted by listeners as well as all your irrational fears. It’s a spooky season special you don’t want to miss.

So grab your pumpkin spice lattes, sit back, and enjoy the ride—preferably with the windows up, just in case a serial killer is lurking nearby (thanks for that one, listeners).

29 Oct 2024Sunday Scaries00:55:22

Ever wondered how to make sourdough from scratch with a few laughs and maybe a dash of frustration? Same. This week on Good As New, we dive into the absolute rollercoaster of breadmaking, a story of two very committed newbie bakers named Brenda and Rhonda (our sourdough starters, of course). If you’ve ever hovered over dough praying it rises or questioned your decision to start baking at midnight, this one’s for you.

Besides our doughy adventures, we throw out some big plans for a holiday girl dinner. Think “favorite things” swap, loads of candles, and maybe even heart-shaped ice cubes because we're all about the girly details. If you’re listening, drop us a DM with “I’m in!” (or “Get some sleep!”). Oh, and don't miss the spooky stories we snuck in to kick off Halloween. Safe trick-or-treating, folks – and here’s hoping you never get ghosted by your sourdough

05 Nov 2024Frosty Feels & Holiday Reels: Keeping & Creating Traditions00:45:57

From parenting conundrums to Costco holiday shopping plans, we’re all in on the seasonal spirit, complete with Christmas trees, candles, and our attempts at holiday cheer despite the chaos of parenting and married life. We're talking all things nostalgia and holiday traditions—those little moments and memories that bring a sense of comfort and warmth, especially during the holiday season. We dive into creating memories that will someday become nostalgic, sharing seasonal traditions, and making the most of the cozy vibes this time of year brings.

Imagine us discussing Christmas garland, failed sourdough, and nostalgic Blockbuster memories in between hearty laughs (and a few sneezes—thanks, winter colds). We dive into memories, heartache, and healing, a side of humor that’s both raw and relatable. I spill my inner monologue on single parenthood, the realness of grief, and the eternal mystery of why we want kids and a little peace all at once.

12 Nov 2024Grateful not Grumbling00:54:50

This week, we’re navigating life’s little ironies: from fall cleaning frenzies and the zen of toy donations to the drama of diet Coke runs and sneaky kid germs (yes, we’re looking at you, Stevie). We’re dishing on pre-holiday prep, the art of staying sane with sick kiddos, and a whole lot of “just being thankful” — for warm homes, working cars, and, yes, endless coffee.

We’ve got talk of the weekly “look-forward-to-it” plan (because everyone deserves a little happy anticipation), some swoon-worthy holiday nostalgia, and, naturally, a few side chats on random restaurant favorites and hilarious holiday movie marathons. So hit play, get comfy, and let’s dive into a holiday-flavored episode all about gratitude, realness, and a sprinkle of good old-fashioned girl talk on what (and who) we’re truly grateful for this season.

19 Nov 2024What A Privilege It Is00:39:22

This week, we’re switching our internal dialogue. You know, the voice that groans about morning sickness, the endless laundry, or the chaos that comes with kids. Instead of “ugh, I hate this,” we’re flipping the script to: “what a privilege it is.” (Yes, really—stick with us.)

We talk about why seeing these challenges as privileges can shift your perspective and your mood. And we asked all of you about the privileges in your life and you came through big time!

In other news, John casually bought a plane (no big deal), we’re deep in our Friendsgiving era, and—drumroll please—tickets for our Girls Dinner go live tomorrow!

Grab your headphones and your gratitude (even if it’s begrudging), because this episode just might change the way you see your world.
