24 Sep 2013While We're Young? SHUTUP! with Kiel Christianson00:34:25
For Members Only #403 The recent USGA "While We're Young" ad campaign is based on a snarky line from the classic golf film “Caddyshack” delivered by comedian Rodney Dangerfield. The irony of the USGA's focus is that Dangerfield's character is everything they seem to be against to protect the "integrity of the game". Our guest is Kiel Christianson of TravelGolf.com who's recent article "While We're Young -- The Curse of Slow Play" and subsequent online feedback brings the USGA to the mat. In the article and on this episode we focus on his 13 points on how to pick up the pace of play.

01 Oct 2013Golf's Not About Who Hits the Ball The Best, But Who Misses It the Least (with Jeff Ritter)00:37:39
#404 For Members Only: Jeff Ritter may be one of the most insightful and approachable teachers ever on Golf Smarter. That's why we continue to ask him back on a regular basis. In this episode, host Fred Greene and Jeff cover nuanced information like something as simple, but easy to forget, as feet position at address. Mostly we discuss an email from a listener who's common frustrations are due to the lack of improvement in his game, or lowering of his scores. He notes how he experiences short bursts of progress and just falls back into the same old groove "No Matter What".

Next up for Members Only, Fred records his custom fitting with Nick Manzano (episodes #394 + #395) and amazingly discovers the results of just how different each club manufacturer can be. There will also be a video of the fitting as well.

The 9th annual People’s Choice Podcast awards are open for nominations till 11:59pm, Oct 15, 2013 at PodcastAwards.com. You can nominate us "ONE" time only! 08 Oct 2013405: Fred Get's Fitted for New Clubs with Nick Manzano of The Golf Mart01:29:15
For Members Only #405 - Despite strict USGA guidelines, not all golf clubs perform the same. Golf Professionals play with sticks that are meticulously tailored to their swing. Amateur golfers make purchases based on what the Pros play. No matter their skill level, few golfers take advantage of being fitted for clubs that compliment their swing style. GolfSmarter Podcast host Fred Greene is in the market for a new Driver, fairway driver, and hybrids and was amazed to learn how different each club performs for his swing. During the 90 minute session, join Fred to learn why club head speed, launch angle, spin rate, dispersion are important, and that some older models suit him better than “the newest and the greatest”. **Note: The beep is when Nick mentioned a price that may not be available everywhere.

For this Members Only episode, Fred set up his video gear to record his fitting session with custom club fitter Nick Manzano of The Golf Mart in San Rafael, CA (also featured in episodes #394 & 395). The video, now available in our YouTube/GolfSmarterTV channel, is only a portion of the session, but the podcast episode is the entire fitting.
15 Oct 2013406 -10 Sensible Rules for Golfing with Others (with Writer Shane Ryan)00:35:21
For Members Only #406- Shane Ryan writes columns and features on golf and other sports for Grantland.com. This summer he wrote an entertaining piece called "10 Sensible Rules for Golfing with Others" but reading it through felt like he was complaining about his pet peeves that can be either annoying or embarrassing during a round. The post states “In a sport so polluted by etiquette and decorum, the possibilities seemed endless”... then observes “the absurd amount of practice you need to put in just to be below average.” You get where he’s going, right? In this episode, we discuss our personal relationships (sic: frustrations) with golf. Some of his points are obvious and I agree, but there are other where I put him to task. Points include “Keep Your Swearing to a Reasonable Level”, “Never Throw or Slam Your Club in Anger”, and "When Your Playing Partner is Struggling, Just Shut Up!". A link to his article is live in the blog at GolfSmarter.com.

Next for Members Only Shane returns to finish his list and spar with host Fred Greene about the pros and cons of each point.

22 Oct 2013#407 - More Fun with Writer Shane Ryan on His Sensible Rules for Golfers00:39:34
For Members Only #407 - Columnist Shane Ryan of Grantland.com continues with host Fred Greene on his “10 Sensible Rules for Golfing With Others”. Starting at #3, there are some points that are make sense, but then it seems to host Fred Greene that there are some points that just constitute whining about his pet peeves.

05 Nov 2013#409 - A Good Golfer's Arms NEVER Pass The Body (with Tony Manzoni)00:37:13
#409 for Members Only - Topping the ball? Did someone say you lifted your head? Tony Manzoni gets pretty fired up about these misconceptions that many golfers have about those consistently frustrating errors like throwing the hands away from the body, bringing the club straight back, or rotating the body too quickly. In this Members Only episode, Tony explains why they occur and what to look for in a teacher who understands the mechanics of a swing.

Both Tony's book and DVD; "The Lost Fundamental - One Simple Move, Better Golf Forever" are ONLY available in our Golfers'Mart at GolfSmarter.com

Host Fred Greene picks Mike’s brain about the board, motor, battery, wheels, speed, balance...you get the point.

From the “sunny, southern” part of Kauai, Poipu Bay GC hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf from 1997-2006. 21 Jan 2014420: Winning The Battle Within - The Return of Dr. Glen Albaugh00:33:12
420: The NFL Seattle Seahawks are going to the Super Bowl XLVIII led by head coach of Pete Carroll. Pete is a long time friend, and former sports psychology student at University of Pacific of this week’s guest, Dr. Glen Albaugh. On the cover of Glen’s book, “Winning the Battle Within” Coach Carroll is quoted as saying “Glen’s teachings helped form my coaching philosophy.” Whether you’re rooting for Pete and the Seahawks or not, you have to admire his attitude, and his approach to competition and winning.

Dr. Glen Albaugh has created a unique Applied Sport Psychology Consulting Service for a wide range of professional and amateur golfers. Formerly a sports psychology instructor at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California for 28 years where he coached the Pacific Tigers golf team. It was during this time, while working with the finest sports psychologists, coaches and golf instructors in the world, that he formulated the basis for the principles in his renowned book, which was authored with Michael Bowker, Winning the Battle Within. These principles have been refined over the years through applications and consultations with established touring pros, and a broad-base of amateurs – juniors to elite.

By establishing structure in pre, post and in-between shot routines, Glen gives golfers the ability to apply his most profound insight “the perfect swing is the one you trust”. In Winning the Battle Within – this podcast episode, the book, and his workshop/consultations – Glen features quality practice describing drills that will enhance learning and improve performance.

This is part 1 of our conversation based on Glen’s New Year Greeting on how to lower scores and increase enjoyment of your game in 2014. Part2 is for Members Only.

422: Martin Chuck is a PGA Golf Professional and entrepreneur who created the very successful and helpful TourStriker training aides. He’s also a prolific YouTube contributor. In part 1 of our 2 part conversation, he explains how the TourStriker clubs help us learn how to swing properly so that you can put the proper compression on the ball to get it up in the air. We talk about the other training aides he’s developed, including his latest Smart Ball that keeps your hands and arms in sync with the body. 11 Feb 2014423: Martin Chuck's Top 5 Most Common Swing Flaws that Hurt Power & Distance00:40:34
423: Martin Chuck, creator of TourStriker returns for part 2 of our conversation. In this episode, host Fred Greene grills Martin to provide us with the Top 5 most common swing flaws that he sees in his amateur students. Each of these flaws on their own will greatly reduce your success in getting the ball off the ground, going far and at your target. Some people suffer from just one, but many golfers combine all of these errors and wonder what's wrong with their clubs.

Martin has published a significant library of incredibly helpful videos on YouTube. The specific video he shares with us is a great drill to practice in the off season. In an effort to keep our heads down, so many golfers don't follow through. This video is a specific drill on how to follow through without lifting your head.

18 Feb 2014424: Keep Your Swing. Lower Your Score. (Author Mike Pile)00:28:39
424: Mike Pile’s bio says that he’s been playing golf for over 35 years and enjoying it for maybe about 12 minutes. Like every mid-handicapper he's tried everything to get better; lessons, practice, advice, new equipment, tips, etc. but they never generated sustainable low scores because it is nearly impossible to play enough to put them into practice. Until now that is.

In part 1 of 2 we meet Mike and discus his great little book, “Keep Your Swing. Lower Your Score.” which offers simple, practical advice about the management and perspective of your game that will improve your golf game without having to practice, quit your job, ignore your family or get divorced. If you have a mid-handicap index and are someone who loves golf and really wants to improve, this book may very well help you achieve sustainable lower scores hole by hole, round to round. Mike’s book delivers practical advice that you can implement today, tomorrow and forever. There is nothing offered that cannot be sustained by the average handicapper who is lucky to play once a week. Keep Your Swing Lower Your Score will improve your game without requiring you to change your swing, take lessons or commit hours of time which most of us simply do not have.

The book is available in our Golfers’Mart at GolfSmarter.com.

18 Mar 2014428: The Golf Rules - Stroke Play...A Fun and Informative New Book by Richard Todd00:25:47
428: Richard Todd was trained on the rules of golf by the USGA and the PGA. His new book "The Golf Rules: Stroke Play - Learn The Rules of Golf By Watching Others Break Them" is an entertaining little book that presents the rules of golf in a funny, short story format.

Unlike the painfully dry legalese of the USGA's Rules of Golf, Richard's book takes you on a round with a typical foursome as they encounter...and break.. the rules.

In addition to being a lifelong golfer, he's also a longtime Golf Smarter Member.

25 Mar 2014429: More on "The Golf Rules -Stroke Play" with Richard Todd00:37:05
429: In the last episode, we stumped Richard Todd on a few details of specific rules. In part 2 we get the correct explanation and discuss other rules that are broken regularly because we don’t know the exact USGA wording or ruling.

Unlike the painfully dry legalese of the USGA's Rules of Golf, Richard's book takes you on a round with a typical foursome as they encounter...and break.. the rules. The book is available in our Golfers’Mart.

I’m giving it out to my traveling golf buddies this year to end any and all disputes.

In addition to being a lifelong golfer, Richard’s also a longtime Golf Smarter Member.

430-431: Dave Stockton has won 5 Majors on the PGA and Champions Tour. He was also the winning Captain of the 1991 Ryder Cup team. He's one of the Pro Tour’s hottest coaches working with Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickleson and Annika Sorenstam.

Dave's got amazing experience and insights, but doesn't focus on golf mechanics. How you use your mind during a round is his forte, and we discuss specifics on pre-shot routine, and strategy to become a MUCH better player.

All three of Dave Stockton's books are available in the book section of our Golfers'Mart.

This is the complete interview. Instead of breaking it into 2 episodes, I'm experimenting with providing Members with the full show all at once. This means that there will not be a Members Only episode next week. If you'd prefer new content each week and like hearing interviews in 2 parts, then we'll continue. Again, there will not be a Members Only episode next week.

In this abbreviated conversation with New York Times bestselling author and internationally distinguished historian James R. Hansen, Hansen shares the compelling life story of the man who designed or redesigned a staggering 400+ courses spread over 43 U.S. states and 27 other nations, including instantly recognizable names as Spyglass Hill in California, and Ballybunion (New Course) in Ireland.

24 Jun 2014442: Target Oriented Golf with Colin Cromack01:08:59
442: The key to performance and flow in golf is understanding how to keep your conscious mind away from attempting to control your physical actions. Colin Cromack of Target Oriented Golf joins us for the first time since 2008 to discuss how to train the eyes, mind and body for success, and then putting Golf Psychology into practice. Swing with precision and play with real freedom.

If you are a dedicated golfer somewhere between beginner and Tour Professional wondering why your best golf performances remain so frustratingly elusive, the Target Oriented Golf program systematically explains how to focus your mind for golf and demonstrate how to put the comprehensive theory into practical procedures you can practice at home, on the range and enjoy out on the golf course. No NLP. No EFT. No 3 Principles. No hypnosis.
01 Jul 2014Taking Your A+ Game from the Range to the Course00:35:37
443: Ken Doherty, Head Golf Professional for Marin Country Club returns in this Members Only episode to help us understand why we're so good on the range, but can't seem to put it together on the course. Did you realize that the balls in the bucket of balls are not the same type you play? Just because you don't pay for them is reason enough to not put a couple in your pocket. What kind of impact does hitting off of a matt have on your ball striking? There are other technical issues we discuss, but the biggest single factor is your attitude. Once you understand the difference, you'll see a change in your scoring.

The GOLF SMARTER community displayed more support then any other group who participated in the Indigogo funding campaign. Now Game Golf is available, and after using it since October 2013, my game has improved, my scores have gone down, and I’ve broken 80 six times! Before Game Golf, I hadn’t had a round in the 70s in over 5 years and only did it 3 times.

In this episode, John talks about how PGA Tour Players, the PGA of America, and the Golf Channel have all become investors. Also he shares his excitement after seeing news reports the day before we recorded that President Obama has been using Game Golf as well.

This is part 1 of a 2 part conversation. Up next in Part 2, we will talk about how to use Game Golf, how to analyze the data, how it improves your game, new pricing, and most importantly, how Golf Smarter Members get an exclusive discount not found any where else.

In her fifth appearance on Golf Smarter, we talk about the critical value of balance, whether strength or flexibility is more important, and the importance of relaxation through the swing.

Jamie has a number of training DVDs on her website
23 Dec 2014468-Lower Body Power Launch.00:36:35
468: Jamie "The Golf Sensei" Zimron returns for part 2 of our conversation. As we start the 10th year of weekly Golf Smarter episodes, we change this week’s topic from the mental aspect of improvement to the physical.

The lower body is critical to success in so many sports, but amateur golfers focus more on their upper body and arms, and forget (or don't know) the importance of keeping the lower body quiet, but using your legs to generate power. What's more important to a successful golf swing, lower body movement or upper body? Strength or flexibility? As a 5th level black belt in Aikido, a certified Sports Psychologist, Mind-Body Fitness expert, and LPGA Certified instructor, Jamie is well versed in all of these answers.

TJ Gillen of Titleist introduces us to the all new ProV1 and ProV1x and makes some pretty compelling arguments on how these balls can make you a better player tee to green. Even to host Fred Greene, a skeptic trying to dismiss the marketing, the value of playing the same ball all the time makes sense. After years of asking, Fred finally learns why ProV doesn’t stand for ProVisional!

07 Apr 2015483 Premium: Never Let a Bad Golf Shot Get In The Way of a Good Round00:49:50
483 Premium: “There’s not a golf professional in the world who thinks about hitting the ball!” is just one of the eye opening comments from this week’s guest, John Grund PGA. John has competed at the pro level, and has coached players who’ve competed at every level, but he knows that most amateur golfers focus more on the ball then on their target. He also talks about the quickest way to hit the ball straighter and get more distance is to find the bottom or your swing arc. It supposed to be in front of the ball where most of us try to hit the back of the ball. Have you ever noticed how many times per round your divot is behind the ball?

495: We can all sympathize with Dustin Johnson after he 3putted to lose this year’s US Open on the final hole. So does that mean putting is more important to low scores and winning then driving the ball 300 yards? It’s a great debate, but there’s no argument that better putters shoot lower scores. This week our guest is Juan Gutierrez who’s injury forced him to stay away from full swings for months, so he concentrated on putting. And he got so good that he won the 2011 World Golf Hall of Fame Putting Championship. He’s just released a book called “Make More Putts: A Proven Putting Performance Improvement System” that includes 150 simple putting drills that will impact every golfer’s game.
