After Leighton & Eddie catch up for their regular chat, Leighton speaks with Colin Mayes, Chief Executive of BGL (formerly Burhill).  Colin has been with the company for many years and has seen many changes in the industry in that time, but BGL continues to be a very successful part of Golf in the UK.  As well as letting listeners know what's happening at BGL, they delve into the proprietary side of Golf and into such topics as "not giving away cheap Golf!".  Colin is always an interesting listen.

WORKFORCE & FACILITIES RESEARCH PROJECT OVERVIEW APRIL 2024

On this episode of Trending Topics with England Golf, we spend some time with two of the England Golf board - Julia Regis and Jenny Denyer.  The discussion looks to present a picture of the process of becoming a Director, what it's like to be on the board and the role itself and any specialised areas that each Director might take responsibility for.  

Julia and Jenny give us an overview of their careers thus far and how that placed them nicely to help the strategic direction of England Golf.  Both come from a leadership, coasching and performance angle and have performed roles on other Boards.  

The conversation delves into some challenges facing Golf as a sport and how these might be approached.  They include improving ethnic diversity in Golf and attracting more women and girls to the game.  There's also a look at some of the great opportunities in front of the sport and how these can be exploited.

On our latest Trending Topics with England Golf, we explore two key areas of its operations, Championships where we're joined by James Crampton and Rules, with Sam Barker-Sabido.

England Golf run many Championships throughout the year at all levels.  James talks about what's involved in applying for an event, hosting an event and the benefits and positive side-effects that can come with hosting one of these tournaments.  Not all championships are at elite level and EG also host many handicap events.  Towards the end of the episode, we're joined by Simon Williams, GM of Sherwood Forest GC, to tell us what it's like to host an EG Championship.  Sherwood Forest have hosted many and Simon gives the inside view, from a club that has done so.

The second interview is with Gary Stangoe, GM of The Caversham, Home of Reading Golf Club.  Gary walks us through the story of how The Caversham arrived to where it is today.  It was the merger of two Golf clubs located only a few miles from each other but with very different histories, backgrounds and culture.  A very brave move by both clubs, which was not without its issues sees a very healthy club looking ahead to a strong future.

Episode 104 is a spotlight on a club that is doing things very well.  Stoneham Golf Club, near Southampton in Hampshire is an excellent club with a Willie Park Jnr designed course.  It's seen some rapid evolution over the last 5-10 years with a state-of-the-art practice facility designed and built, much work completed on the course and now a water storage reservoir being constructed.  Othe plans may follow including clubhouse renovations.  

More than jyst the physical work being carried out, much of the success of the club is down to good governance, but also the creativity and diligence of Matt Plested, Course Manager and Shah Bani-Sadr, General Manager.  We talk to them both, on site and hear the story and thought processes that have led to the evolution of the club.

After a long awaited visit to Royal Norwich, Leighton sits down in the Clubhouse with David Coventry - Chairman, and James Stanley - CEO of Royal Norwich. 

After 9 holes and some Lunch, the trio talk through the Royal Norwich story, with David explaining the back-story and James taking us through the present and what’s to come!  David has been at the heart of the move from the former site since the 1980’s.  This is a great story all round and one which all in the industry should listen to, not least for some inspiration as to what Golf Clubs can look like as we move forward. 

One of the biggest challenges along the way was the cultural shift once the move was made and both David and James give their take on this.

Royal Norwich offers some stunning Golf but it’s much more than this.  The club wants to open its doors wide to the community whether it’s utilising the Clubhouse, Practice Facilities or even Greenkeeper training!

Two insightful interviews this episode following a catch up from Leighton & Eddie.

Rob Spurrier joins Eddie and Leighton to talk about his journey with Orbis Golf Academies. Orbis operate Golf Academies, but also provide training and development to PGA Professionals.  Their main aim is to grow club's revenue but also enhance the customer experience.  The reveniue growth is driven by growing membership numbers.  Rob is from the UK, but the company has seen great success in the US.  Attention now turns to the UK & Europe.  

Eddie is then joined by Eddie (Reid).  Eddie is the Managing Director of TGI, a retail services group that helps PGA Professionals to succeed in their own businesses.  After telling us a little about his own journey, sgtarting back in Glasgow, Eddie tells us how TGI has become so successful through supporting PGA Pro's for nearly 40 years!

After Leighton & Eddie catch up for a chat, Eddie is joined by Steve Salter from Salt Club Consulting.  Steve's expertise and specialism is helping clubs with their technology , having been associated with a number of golf clubs and golf destinations he has been sought after in assisting golf club businesses with their technology strategy .
