Picking out what clothes Hollywood’s A-listers wear can seem like the stuff of dreams. Karla has worked with many of the women who routinely make the best-dressed list (think: Ruth Negga, Olivia Wilde, Sarah Paulson, Tracee Ellis Ross among others). Her influence in fashion is so big that she’s been named one of the “most powerful stylists” by both the Hollywood Reporter and the New York Times. On this episode, Karla shares what it *really* means to be a stylist and how she’s branched out as a fashion entrepreneur to launch a styling app called Wishi. 18 Apr 2023Michele Romanow Loves to Be Underestimated 00:34:37
Today's episode features Avery's friend and notable Canadian entrepreneur, Michele Romanow. Michele is a founder many, many times over and a Dragon on CBC's Dragons' Den (that's Canada's answer to Shark Tank, by the way). It was while she was on Dragons' Den that Michele got her idea for her best-known business to date: Clearco, a lending firm for businesses that takes a share of revenue instead of equity to give founders easier access to capital. Clearco has given billions to business owners to date, and has raised the bar for representing traditionally marginalized business owners. Michele talks about her first-ever founder experience (she started a caviar farm on the East coast of Canada with a couple of friends straight out of school), why she truly never takes anything for granted and she gets candid about how being an entrepreneur—no matter how much capital or name recognition you have—never gets easier. Still, she wouldn't have it any other way. Follow Michele on Instagram at @micheleromanow. Get your very own Workplace Affirmation Deck from Girlboss at girlboss.com/affirmations! Today, Avery has two separate chats with two women involved with our new fave film, Polite Society. Have you ever been frustrated with how the world works? Then when you try to change it, you realize how big the problem is. Some of us would be overwhelmed by this thought, unlike our superhero guest. This week, Puno chats with Emily Ackerman, an engineering grad student and disabilities rights advocate bringing awareness to accessibility.  Emily’s viral tweet about a potentially life-threatening encounter with an autonomous delivery robot at the University of Pittsburgh, which was blocking a curb cut designed for people with disabilities like herself, is bringing attention to the issue.  This episode sheds light on how people overlook disabilities in the design process. Emily gives us helpful tips on how to combat this issue not just in design but in life. Emily also touches on this episode about her COVID research, academic journey, and being in STEM.  Emily's powerful message will have you asking yourself, how can I contribute to breaking down systematic and institutional barriers and have more inclusivity in my everyday life? 10 Apr 2019Dealing With the Boys' Club, with Tina Brown of Women in the World00:39:14
You've probably heard this before: Today's media landscape isn't what it used to be. It's a little less shiny, it’s harder to stay relevant, and it’s much harder to hold people’s attention and really make an impact through all the noise. But, if you've managed to do exactly that, consistently, for many years, across different publications—then you might just be someone by the name of Tina Brown. She led Vanity Fair magazine as its first female editor-in-chief, bringing the magazine back from near extinction and turning it into something glossy that mixed celebrities and glamour with news and politics in a way that nobody had really done before. She’s also the only woman to have ever edited the New Yorker. Most recently, she founded Women in the World—a summit that brings together luminaries from Michelle Obama to Meryl Streep to Oprah Winfrey. In today's episode, Girlboss COO Neha Gandhi chats with Brown about what it was like being the boss at 25, how she dealt with the boy's club of publishing, and why it's always a good thing to employ industry veterans as well as newcomers to the field. 22 Oct 2024Permission to Pause: How to Plan for Your Sabbatical with Danica Nelson 00:32:12
What if taking a career break was the answer to recovering from burnout, reigniting your creativity, and achieving a better work-life balance?  It was for Dani Nelson!  With over 10 years working in the marketing industry, Dani transitioned from a full-time corporate gal working at Shopify and Canadian telecommunications company TELUS to full-time entrepreneurship as a content creator, marketing consultant, and Liberty Leave™ coach, dedicated to empowering women to take their own mini-retirements and explore the world (or rediscover what lights them up outside of work). Dani shares her concept of "Liberty Leave," a term she coined to describe the transformative power of stepping away from work to recharge and reflect. During her first sabbatical, she spent six months solo traveling in Southeast Asia, and now, she’s on her second one, living in Malaga, Spain. In today’s episode, Dani recounts her own journey from a demanding corporate career to a life filled with travel and self-discovery, highlighting the often-overlooked signs of burnout that can creep into our lives. But why aren’t career breaks normalized? How will you explain that gap in your resume to future employers? And what will your family think?!   Don’t worry! Dani covers it all while offering practical advice for those considering a sabbatical. We discuss the importance of financial planning and the emotional courage it takes to embrace the unknown, no matter what stage of your career. Spoiler: You have to be risk-averse! Dani inspired us to rethink our relationship with work and to understand that rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. And 2-3 weeks of vacation per year just isn’t cutting it. Curious about how to give yourself permission to take that much-needed break? 24 Sep 2024Predicting the Future of AI and Work With Dr. Joy Buolamwini00:39:37
Book your stay today at Breathless Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa and start making memories that last a lifetime. https://www.hyatt.com/en-US/hotel/mexico/breathless-riviera-cancun/brerc Never miss an episode, subscribe to the Girlboss Radio podcast. AI is everywhere. So what does that mean for jobs? Are they all going to be obsolete in the next 10 years? And how can we prepare ourselves—and our careers—for the future? In this episode, Dr. Joy Buolamwini answers all of your most pressing AI questions. She is the founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, an award-winning researcher, and a “poet of code.” As the author of the national best-selling book Unmasking AI, Dr. Joy has dedicated her career to uncovering and addressing racial and gender biases in artificial intelligence. With degrees from both Oxford and MIT, and recognition as one of Forbes’ Top 50 Women in Tech, she shares invaluable insights and advice for navigating the complexities of this ever-changing technology. In the age of AI, protecting ourselves starts with knowing our rights and options—like the right to refuse facial recognition technology at airports and identifying which AI tools are ethical (and which ones aren’t—looking at you, ChatGPT).  In our conversation, Avery and Dr. Joy dive into the positive sides of AI and the future of work, exploring how it can enhance feedback, boost efficiency, and streamline summarizing information. But she also emphasizes the importance of being cautious about how we adopt AI, both in our workplaces and beyond. Dr. Joy shines a light on the real consequences of flawed systems, particularly for marginalized communities, leading to wrongful arrests, misidentifications, and discriminatory hiring. She highlights how crucial representation and storytelling are in raising awareness about the limitations and biases of AI. So, while AI isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, we hope this conversation eases your anxiety, and offers you the knowledge and perspective needed to engage thoughtfully with the technology shaping our world. It’s better to prepare for the future than try to avoid it. 👋 Follow Dr. Joy on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/poetofcode/  👩‍💻 Learn more about Dr. Joy here: https://www.poetofcode.com/  📖 Read Unmasking AI: https://fave.co/47Behe0 📺 Watch Coded Bias on Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/ca/title/81328723  🤖 Read more about AI and the future of work: https://girlboss.com/blogs/read/tagged/ai 📷 Follow Girlboss Radio on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/girlbossrally/  💻 Watch this episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/girlboss  💌 Subscribe to our daily newsletter: https://girlboss.com/pages/newsletter  💼 Find your dream job or post open roles: https://jobs.girlboss.com/ 📚 Did you know Girlboss has courses?
