Crystal grew up within a strict religious structure, inside the Mormon church. And today she's going to talk about some of the challenges it presented. She was married at 17 years old, and taught that women are to stay at home, and have children. That's their role. Period, point, blank. It wasn't until later on in life that she would learn what religious trauma was.

There was a lot of trauma stemming from the conditions and programs placed on her psyche, and spirit. She struggled from the exhausting efforts that came with leading a double life, and the pressures from the church and her family to stay in line. Crystal also battled with addictions.

We're gonna hear how Crystal was able to break free, and take a different path in life. One leading toward self discovery. She'll talk about sobriety, and how she was able to get there. Along with some other tools she's found useful; muscle testing, yin-yoga, and heart-to-heart.

Ladies and Gentleman, welcome back to another edition of 'In between The Stories'. We're gonna get into something I've been thinking about lately, party due to my re-reading of a book by John Taylor Gatto, Dumbing Us Down. If you haven't read it, I highly encourage you to give that book a decent read. It isn't very long, but really packs a punch. A school teacher in New York City for 30 years, Mr. Gatto became outspoken and critical of modern education, it's ideologies, history and methods. His colleagues, and staff at times didn't appreciate his way of doing things. But, his students loved him.

Today I wanted to share some thoughts on public schooling and homeschooling. Kids are the future. Was it Aristotle who said "give me a child for 7 years, and I'll show you the man?" Those early years are critical for a child's development - mentally, physically, emotionally. As for myself, I attended public school throughout my adolescents. I've gauged some of the conversations on and offline from parents who have children in public school, and some of the concerns seem to involve the safety, and lack of support for their child's needs. Over the years there's been an uptick with parents pulling their kids out of public school. Have you noticed that in your area?

And on the flip side, you have parents and children who had a negative experience with homeschooling. Suggesting more resources toward public education - adequate teacher training, sufficient funding. When these 2 needs are met, progress can be made. Taking those things into consideration along with a few points Mr. Gatto's book highlights, fueled this episode. Welcome Back to the Show!! We've got a special one for you today. And the reason it's special, is because joining, is one of the big inspirations behind Giants Amongst Us. She's the light in my corner, and the wind to my back. My sunshine, when the days go gray, and feel cold. She's been right by my side, and I by hers. Ladies and Gentleman, my wife, Monique wanted to sit down with us today, and she's got a story to tell.

Growing up in East Germany, while the wall was still up, she moved out and headed West (Frankfurt) at 17 to pursue her childhood passion. And that was to become a nurse - "I knew very early that I wanted to be a nurse .... I was 6 years old. My aunt's were nurses, working in a home for the mentally ill and disabled ... they were my heroes. I always wanted to visit, and I would volunteer and help at the homes with my aunt's ... feeding them and reading books to them."

Monique would eventually become a nurse, working in Intensive Care Units for 23 years. She also worked in a psychiatric ward and with handicap and disabled children. Monique, after 2 major surgeries - spinal fusion for her back, and a year later, another spinal fusion, but this time for her neck, decided it was time to finally hang up her scrubs and move on.

As hard as it was for her, considering how much she loved being a nurse, she decided it was time to hang up the scrubs and move on. Still a nurse at heart, Monique talks about her transition away from working in ICU. She also talks about her recovery after the surgeries, and she'll be the first to tell you - "Even though I have these health issues, and diagnosis, I'm more than that. I want people to see me, for me." She's definitely more than that, and is without question a GIANT AMONGST US. She's happy, full of life, and surrounding herself with things that fill her with joy, and love - stone painting, crocheting, hula-hooping, and giving sound baths are just a few. It's about expressing oneself freely, And that's how Mo flows.

As always it's good to be back. Hope you all are doing well. I'm happy to introduce to another guest. Today, Ethan joins us and he has a story to tell.

In school, everything came pretty easy for Ethan. His teachers considered him gifted. But, not too long into high school, he started noticing a change - depression, feeling sluggish and tired all day, brain fog, problems with sleep. His condition wouldn't get better, and he found himself struggling socially, shying away from people, he felt awkward, overwhelmed with anxiety, which was a startling contrast to how he was as a child.

This led him down a year long journey trying to figure out what it was that was affecting him mentally, physically, emotionally. And despite all his efforts - engaging in hobbies, intermittent fasting, changes in diet, psychotherapy, his condition seemed to only get worse.

Eventually, he stumbled upon a condition, and things started to click. Upper Airway resistance syndrome, which is a type of sleep apnea. And something I wasn't too familiar with prior to our conversation.

Ethan's going to walk us through how this type of sleep apnea affect every aspect of his life. What may of caused it, some of the ways he's tried to cope with it, including a past surgery, and a big motivation as to why he has fought tooth and nail, being totally pro active in his road to recovery, and his big why being music.

We're back! Hope this finds you all in good spirits. Today, we're joined by Clarence, and he's got a story to tell. There's a lot to unpack, and what I've decided to do with our conversation is to break it up into two parts. The chunk of it you'll hear in this episode. Clarence has from an early age, and pretty much his whole life, he's suffered from a whole host of health conditions. Autistic (in the process of undergoing an official diagnosis), ADHD, facial blindness, turrets. amphantasia, all of these disabilities may of put him at a disadvantage.

But, you can't help but to be inspired after listening to how he worked out ways to better himself in areas where he lacked and fell short. From even teaching himself how to talk. You'll be surprised at that all played out.

Clarence also suffered a lot of abuse. Sexual, Physical, Mental, and that led to depression, and eventual weight gain. Over 400 lbs, and sleeping 17-18 hours a day for about a year, he was in a bad place. He's story, as you may of guessed, didn't end there. It was only the beginning. Listen to Clarence in his own words talk about his journey with claiming his life back., and taking responsibility for his experience.

Self forgiveness. Why is it so difficulty for some? Have you struggled with it? We're gonna talk about it today. And not just its difficulty, but what we can start doing today, to help us out. If this is something you've been struggling with. Forgiveness, letting go, and moving on. Easier said than done, right? I know, I know. This is something I've wrestled with for a long time.

Shame, Guilt. Disgust. Embarrassment. Anger. Are only some of emotions that come with falling short or missing the mark. Not living up to our own standards, or the standards of someone else - family, friends, society.

By accepting who we are, imperfections and all, we can start to heal, grow, and work towards truly being free. So, let's get into it. In a nutshell, here are 3 things we can start doing today to help with self forgiveness.

1. Find a mirror, and look into your eyes. Notice how you feel, and take a few minutes doing this. Then forgive yourself for the things you're having a hard time letting go of.
2. Apologize to those you've wronged, if possible. In person, by phone or text, whichever way you feel best.
3. Remember, you're Human, and we all make mistakes. Acknowledge the wrong, but don't identify with it. Feed yourself (mentally, spiritually) all those things you wish and inspire to be.

Deployment, PTSD, and mental health. A former infantryman, deployed twice to Afghanistan. Benjamin's experience first hand, the heavy cost of war. After spending time in combat zones, he began to have questions and concerns about the validity of the war. Benjamin shares some of the hardships he faced while abroad, and what it was like for him returning home.

Medically retired. Benjamin credits his wife for a big part of his recovery. He's now an author, publishing his first book Hero of Oria. Writing has been a wonderful source of comfort for Benjamin, with helping him deal with past trauma, and his PTSD. From hell and back in a hand basket, he refuses to play the victim card. A trait I'll always respect. In his own words - "we choose our own way."

We had ourselves a great conversation. And I'm happy to invite you all to the table. Medically retired, and now living with his wife whom he credits to be a big reason as to why he is where he is today (mentally and emotionally), along with their dog. We're back!! And I hope this finds you all in good spirits. Today, we're joined by Emmanuel, and he's got a story to tell. He talks about life for him as a child - an abusive mother, being raised in a cult, and kept away from his father, and all alone. When the authorities, police officers, school board members, and other adults did nothing in response to his pleas for help and reports of abuse. Emmanuel out of desperation and fear, fled and ran away at 15 years old.

Through all the pain, suffering, trauma and the guilt of blaming himself for the abuse. There's also healing and forgiveness. And Emmanuel, who credits his faith in God for being a reason as to why, years later he was able to forgive his mother for the abuse suffered as a child. That was a big part of his healing. Emmanuel is definitely a GIANT AMONGST US, With new life, purpose, and meaning.

Redefining how Kurt Cobain is remembered, Kelly Catlin joins us to talk about her new book. And rather than focusing on the tragedy of his passing, her book celebrates his life and lasting impact on humanity.

A 500 page celebration of Kurt's life. Kelly spent two years working with some of his close friends, along with family members, indie artist, Nirvana's former management, and record labels. She's included tons of mental health resources, raising awareness on suicide and its prevention, as well as information on bullying, child abuse laws, and the unhoused crisis. With a portion of the royalties going to charitable organizations.

It was a pleasure to meet up and listen to Kelly talk about the inspiration behind her book, some of the unknown facts regarding who Kurt Cobain was, as a man, in contrast to how the media portrayed him. We talk a little bit about A.I and its impact on writers, writing and the industry at large. She's seen a lot of good writers get put out of work because of it. How many ever faced their shadow?It's like the boogeyman in the closet. Or a cellar dweller luring in the basement. The basement of our conscious. And it keeps a lot of residue from our past - where there's leftover hurt, failures, trauma, fear, shame.Caught up in our day to day play, it all goes unnoticed for a while. Then, one day, something happens or someone's actions bring parts of our shadow to the surface. It's like the lights come on!!!

Paying attention to our reaction can teach us some things. Do we get defensive or uncomfortable? Forgiving ourselves, and letting go of the guilt and shame by embracing those emotions when they do show their faces. To acknowledge them, and become aware of them, can help give us insight and understanding about ourselves from the inside out. Easier said than done, huh?

Ready, Set, and here we GO!! Today we're joined by Erin, and she's got a story to share. Struggling with at a very young age both undiagnosed, Autism and ADHD, to depression and anxiety - "If you had told me as an anxious kid that one day I would have my own business and stand on a stage and tell stories in front of hundreds of people I would have thought you were lying." She's definitely come a long ways. And Erin takes us on that journey. The feeling of being different, not like the rest of the kids, and "weird" was something she later in life embraced. And also, later in life, the huge realization for her of having ADHD and being queer.

But, it doesn't stop there. Erin talks about when and how she found her voice through storytelling and it's impact on her life. She's now coaching people and helping them find their "authentic voice" so they can share it with people who need it. Which is the heart beat of this Podcast, to Shine Stories. Whether on stage or in her own space, Erin has shown to be a GIANT AMONGST US.

Welcome back to the Show!!! Hope you're all well and in good spirits? Today, Pamela joins us, and she's got a story to tell. From her father being out of the picture, and growing up in poverty, to losing her sister at an early age. The neglect, abusive relationships, and "soul crushing" work as a nurse. Pamela's journey in finding herself through all the abuse and trauma is every bit of INSPIRATIONAL and reason why she is without question a GIANT AMONGST US.

Finding a good therapist, EMDR therapy, and journaling were a few of the resources that helped her along the way. Her stories a reminder to all of us that "it's never too late." She's now in her 50''s and living her best life - "I love everything that I do. I do love my life now, and I didn't even know that was possible before, you know, before 50. So at 50 was kind of my rebirth."

He paints, sings, song writes, plays the violin, guitar, teaches, and is an advocate for mental health. Benjamin Barnes AKA "Bencasso" joins us, and he's got a story to tell.

From out the darkness, and emerging towards the light. Ben's story involves neglect, abuse, depression, disabilities and attempted suicide. But, in true GIANT AMONGST US fashion, Ben's story provides hope, inspiration, and promise. His desire to create raw and authentic music is a fire in him that keeps burning. Ben gets candid with us and talks about the neglect, and abuse he suffered as a child. With him and his brother being left alone for days, in a padlocked trailer, while mother was out doing her thing.

At around 4 years old, Benjamin picked up the violin. His father taught him how to sing and play the guitar, and Ben's mother taught him to paint. Anointed with the spirit to create, musically, vocally, and artistically. Bencasso is the embodiment of artistic expression. Drawing from misfortune, hard times, depression, and an almost fatal attempted suicide. To pull a quote from off his website "Ben simply wants to make enough money through his music to make a living whilst spreading this endearing and inspirational message of hope to all those that feel dejected and disappointed with the current predicaments in their life."

Born and raised in Cleveland, Tennessee, today Gabriel joins us. And he's got a story to tell. In 2020, Gabriel moved to Canada for love. Shortly after moving, and filing for his U.S. taxes things began to unwind. A refund of $1,800 was due, but was never processed. It was flagged because of fraud. Four years later, and a handful of roadblocks, Gabriel finally received his refund in 2024. But this exposed him to a bigger issue - "the U.S. expat taxation quagmire."

We're gonna sort through some of the weeds in this convo and hopefully clear some things up. I learned a lot I wasn't privy to prior to our conversation. Maybe you're like me, from the U.S. and now living abroad. Or thinking about relocating. This might be for you.

Embracing the authentic human experience. And today, we're joined by Adeline. She's got a story to tell. From growing up in a household that was anything but supportive and loving. To being separated from her biological mother due to a prison term which ultimately gave way to an abusive upbringing under the hand of a step mother who was manipulative, and controlling. Adeline was left to figure it out on her own and alone.

Sometimes through the tragedy, despair, and black skies, something beautiful can be born. Adeline had/has ART, that was her medicine, and a big part of how she was able to endure the trauma as a child. She's also since been reunited with her biological mother, and they're both building a beautiful and meaningful relationship together.

Adeline's doing the self work, and making an honest effort to be and do well. And she has without a doubt found a place as one of the GIANTS AMONGST US.

Today, F.S. joins us and he's got a story to tell. From the womb, indoctrination is encouraged by Jehovah's Witness. The listening of tapes, and sermons out loud while pregnant was something his mother did, says F.S - "my doctrination started before I was born." Child to teenager, then to an adult, F.S, his whole world revolved around a governing body, the ruling council of Jehovah's Witness.

There's a lot to unpack, and F.S does a great job in doing this. Sharing life growing up as a Jehovah's Witness. The trauma instilled in him as a child, because of Armageddon, and the destruction that was to follow -"It made me suicidal big time, as a child, the first suicidal thought I had, I was 10 years old." F.S. also shares with us, in detail, the death and abuse this organization is responsible for. It'll be surprising for some.

Just recently (a couple years ago) he separated himself from the organization, and because of it, lost everything. Family, friends, and ultimately the world as he knew it. Leaving him at ground zero, and alone in a world he was programmed to believe was against him. He had his truth, his conviction, and an awakening. But, it came with a price. That's his reason for wanting to share his story with us today. He's angry, and rightfully so. Another GIANT AMONGST US, with a passion and desire to bring awareness and shed light on what's really going on behind the curtain, of what he calls, a cult.

Happy Holidays, we're back!!! Today, Scott joins us, and he's got a story to tell.

Imagine losing everything and everyone. Family, friends, and any support once had, gone. All because a difference in belief. Scott, lost his entire family, 17 members on his fathers side, ex-communicated him. Scott left the church 15 years ago, and hasn't had any contact with his family for 13 of those 15 years. In the world of Jehovah's Witness, it's called "shunning - "children being taken ... grand kids being cut off .... tragic family separations"

Leaving the church, and the want to remove himself from anything to do with the cult, he eventually moved to Vietnam. And that's where things get interesting - "I would of probably just lived with that traumatic thing inside, and never said anything about it, but something started happening living there." From trying to escape his story to becoming an activist.

Since 2016, he's been part of a project : The Witness Underground documentary, as well as The Witness Underground podcast. I'd like to welcome another GIANT AMONGST US. I enjoyed the conversation we had and Scott left a lot of good nuggets on the table, take what you will from it.

Dealing with a major depression disorder, and anxiety as well, today, Derek joins us. And he's got a story to tell.

Derek is a former award-winning sportswriter. He talks about the day he gave up his dream job in order to keep 50% custody of his daughter after his divorce. Since middle school, Derek struggled with major depression, and anxiety. And after losing his career, his mental health would only get worse.

When the meds didn't work or seemed to worsen his condition, he sought answers elsewhere. Diggin' into self help books, listening to psychology based podcast, participating in talk therapy. And then, he learning about meditation. And that was the big break through for Derek. He's currently working on completing his meditation teaching certification. With plans to bring to others what's been a huge help for Derek with reducing his anxiety and improving his overall health. And that's the medicine in meditation.

Be inspired. Be encouraged. Be the change you wish to see.

After a short hiatus, I'm happy to be back. Next up on GIANTS AMONGST US is Chris who joins us, and he's got a story to tell. Chris talks about his bouts with anxiety, depression, dropping out of college and losing some real close and dear to him, his father. He shares the struggles of trying to find purpose, meaning, and a peace of mind.

Chris also talks about music being therapeutic for him. Poetry, and expressing himself over instrumentals helped him cope with the loss of his father. He gives us hope of there being light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how dark, and lonely it can seem for us. After trying times, and his fair share of up and downs, he's now got a brighter outlook on life, and is excited about what the future can bring. An UNDERDOG out for his taste of goodness, and this makes him a GIANT AMONGST US.

Unfiltered and raw. This about one's journey towards enlightenment. How is one able to find forgiveness, healing and freedom, in the midst of chaos? From drug addiction to drug rehab. To having his whole world turned upside down. A chain of events devastating Rick. Eventually, he was unable to sleep, and stayed awake for 5 days straight. What exactly tipped him over the edge? Rick breaks it down for us, in detail.

In and out of a behavioral hospital, and emergency rooms, to having an out of body experience, intuitively writing, laying face down on his bed. Rick shares a vision he had while in trance, and the catalyst to help him produce his first book 'Bye-Polar Enlightenment: A Personal Memoir With Philosophical Depths Into The Unknown.'

We're back, alive and well, and we've got a story to tell. Today, Phry from Germany joins us. And he's got some things to share. From the good times he spent as a child with his grandparents, to the hard times of dealing with the divorce of his parents and living with his mother who suffered from manic-depression. This often caused unnecessary trouble for both Phry and his sister.

At 16 years old, Phry found himself depressed, alone, and not able to fit in with the rest of the kids at school. Isolating himself in a room, and losing the meaningful connections he once had with friends. He found himself losing it, mentally, emotionally, and physically. But, things changed once Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" came on. Phry talks about that fist time he saw Slash play on the guitar, and how it spoke to him on an entire new level - "After just one week I was hooked and I knew that this was "my thing" and I wanted to do nothing else with my life than becoming a great guitarist."

Now music and dedicating himself to becoming the best guitarist he can has changed Phry completely. He says "I have put all the trauma from my childhood and also the more recent tragic events into my new songs, not only to help myself deal with them better but also to show other people how something bad can be turned into something good eventually."

Today's GIANTS AMONGST US is with Cie, from the Philippines. And she's got a story to tell. Throughout childhood, her parents were absent. They worked long works in order to make ends it for her family. Growing up Cie talks being at home mostly, she's an introvert - "we were at home most of the time when we were kids. So maybe that's why we're introverts, because we prefer being alone rather than being with other people."

Cie talks about emotional intelligence, and the lack of it earlier on in her life. Did the absence of both her parents during those key childhood years, play any role in it? What's more important, financial or emotional support? Cie shares her thoughts with us and also how Stoicism helped her at one of the lowest points in her life. She's taken back control of her life, and emotions and I'd like to welcome her as one of the GIANTS AMONGST US.

After listening to this episode, I'd like to challenge you all. Just give it a week, one week, of not picking up your phone first thing in the morning to check emails, messages or getting online to tango with any of your social medias. Stay away from it for the first hour, and instead pay yourself. Take a walk, meditate, journal, sit outside and get some air. Do something for you, that give you joy, a peace of mind, or puts a smile on your face, outside the 'inter-webs'. And, see what that does for you. It's just a week. How addicted are we? I'm game and already started.

Welcome back to the second half of our conversation with Clarence. Hope this finds you in good spirits. In this half, Clarence shares a little bit of his high school years with us. And you'd be surprised to hear where the abuse and bullying was coming from. It was from his teachers. One teacher in particular, encouraged some of the other kids to harass Clarence, and show up at his house to beat him up. How could this be one might ask?

"No matter how bad it is in your life, no matter how much it hurts, I promise you that the pain is worth it. That you are worthy of learning how to live a better life, and overcoming those habits that are keeping you down. It takes a lot of sacrifice. It takes a lot of pain, but I promise you that it's worth it." - Clarence.

What's up guys! I didn't realize it until after recording. But, it's been 1 year to date. Jan 11, 2023 I recorded the intro for the Show. An idea and concept turned into an opportunity to meet people from all over, so we can talk and share story. And, on a whim today, I wanted to touch bases with everyone. I had no clue, that today pretty much marks us being one full year in. What a coincidence, huh? LoL

[This is part 1 of an hour conversation]

Today, Mindy Li joins us to share her unique story and journey toward overcoming Shaken Baby Syndrome. Shook unconscious at 4 months old, Mindy suffered internal brain bleeding. Her parents were told by the operating doctor there was a slim to none chance of her surviving, and if she did, she'd be brain dead. Well, she's here with us, ALIVE and a proven testament to what faith in oneself and the support of loved ones can do for a person. Despite the brain damage and trauma, and being partly paralyzed with impaired vision, as well as other disabilities she's had to endure, Mindy is thankful, hopeful, and truly an UNBREAKABLE and UNSHAKEABLE spirit.

Her mission "I didn't have the support, the resources, or the help to understand what happened to me. I want to build a community where we can find each other, connect, and be the beautiful people we are."

[This is part 2 of an hour long conversation]

Picking up right where we left off on part 1 with Kyle. He shares advice on how someone struggling with the very vice that tied him up, an addiction to endless CELLPHONE USAGE, can reclaim both their time, and life back. His practical coaching tips can help take you from whatever level you're currently at, right back up to the top - that's to level 10 and beyond.

It was great to hear how Kyle made an active decision to get back in the drivers seat and take control of his life. After speaking with Kyle and listening to his story I've been inspired to be more conscious of how I spend or waste time with my smart phone. It can be a useful tool, but also the thorn in ones flesh slowly pricking away. To be mindful of ones actions, present and in tune with why we do the things we do, can be the start of us cleaning up bad habits to replace them with better ones.

One thing that stood out for me was Kyle's love for his nephews and nieces. The fact that he wasn't able to be the fun, cool, and playful uncle to them any longer because of his depression and the addiction gripping at him, was his reason to make changes in his life. After hearing this from him, I'm reminded of my nephew and how precious those relationships are. Thank you for your words Kyle, in my eyes you fit the bill, and are a GIANT AMONGST US.

We're back with another one, I hope this finds you all in good spirits. Today D'Angelo joins us, and he's got a story to tell.

Life as a child was rough for D'Angelo. An abusive home, full of violence, drugs, and instability. D'Angelo took to the streets at the tender age of 11, to escape the abuse at home. He was hurting, afraid, and longing for acceptance in love. From juvenile halls throughout his adolescence to becoming a registered nurse as an adult. Working in trauma units, while still struggling with his own childhood trauma. D'Angelo eventually found himself in the belly of the beast, addicted to drugs, robbing banks, and then came an 11 year prison bid.

What happened during his incarceration? How did he handle those demons which haunted him for so long? D'Angelo opens up and talks about some of these questions. He also has his book - ‘On My Own-Reflecting on Yesterday' , a memoir now available. There's children books he's working on, educational material on addiction. Writing, and penning has been therapy for him. This is about redemption, and not being bound to the past. After all D'Angelo's been through, he made it out the other side, bringing hope with him, and embracing a new day. I'm pleased to introduce another GIANTS AMONGST US. Enjoy the Show.

It's good to be back for another episode. Hope you guys are well, and in good spirits. If this is your first time tuning in, this is Giants Amongst Us, where we share in the unique Human experience. Real stories told by real people, aimed at highlighting the resilience of the Human spirit. So, if you're in a dark place right now, let these stories be reminder, that you're not alone, and things can in fact get better. There's 2 decisions we're faced with. One of them being to accept things the way that they are. And the other, to accept responsibility to change the situation. The choice is yours. For years, and years, I've struggled with this. I wanted to sit down and share some of those struggles with you all today.

I was using and abusing drugs and alcohol for 15 years. Cocaine, hard rock (crack), methamphetamines, ecstasy, and narcotics. These chemicals took precedence over everything else. No self control, self worth or plans for the future. I was only concerned about the moment. Which turned into a vicious cycle fueled by negative thoughts, that led to poor choices, feeding bad habits, and in the end, killing me from the inside-out. It was fun for a time, but "nothing gold stays." In desperation to get back on track. I decided to enlist in the Military. The day the towers in New York were hit (9/11), was the day my recruiter picked me up to send me on my way. I share a little bit of how that all played out and what happened during my short time as an infantry man.

From receiving two D.U.I's and spending 30 days in jail. To losing my girlfriend of 5 years, who was killed by a drunk driver. I wasn't in a good place at all. It felt like life had ate me up, and spit me right back out. My mentality for so many years, was to blame everyone and everything else for my problems. How did things change? When did things change? The drugs, heavy drinking, and lack of responsibility and accountability? I talk about that as well. Along with meeting my wife, who has been a huge blessing in my life. Couldn't of asked, hoped or prayed for a better woman by my side. Here's to that piece of happiness, we're all reaching for.

Back with another story. Welcome to GIANTS AMONGST US, where you'll always hear real stories told by real people. And today, Pepper Anne joins us, and she's got a story to tell. Pepper Anne is a true crime author, and today she talks about how finding out about a cousin of hers, who's currently serving 14 life sentences, opened up a story that ended up being one of the biggest scandals in the South. And she was determined to uncover its truth.

With the support from her family, and a strong team behind her she was able to, after 12 years, finally get her story published -The Notorious Texas Swindler: The Mastermind Behind The Grayson County Five. Her drive, will, and conviction to stand on moral and integrity in order to see her dream through, no matter the cost, gives her a place as one of the GIANTS AMONGST US. And is a living testament as to what the human spirit can do when faced with challenges.

Great to be back with another conversation. Today Allan joins us, and he's got a story to tell.

Allan's taking us for a ride, sharing his first hand experience with Ayahuasca. He's sat through hundreds of ceremonies in Peru with lineage Shipibo shamans, and experienced healing from Dissociative Disorder. Allan's upbringing was far from ideal. Alcoholic parents. His mother in and out of mental institutions. When Allan was in the 1st grade, his brother was killed in a farming accident.

A chaotic childhood, losing his brother early on, Allan found himself battling with his own addictions. He started to drink heavy as a teenager. Using drugs, and struggling with the inner turmoil, and trauma from childhood. It was at the age of 29 that he decided, enough was enough. "It's time to get sober." Not long after his sobriety, he realized quitting the drugs and alcohol wasn't enough - "what about the emotional hangover?"

Dissatisfied with working for the Canadian government as a journalist, and in media. He left a good pension to start his own business. Which turned out pretty successful. But throughout the years, he had an obsession with the human condition -"what drives humanity?" A characteristic he later learned is very common among people with Dissociative Disorder. And this brings us to Ayahuasca, and Allan's very own experience with her healing touch. Allan does a great job sharing his knowledge and experience with plant medicine :

• The spiritual aspects, medicinal usage and intelligence of the plant
• The purpose of a shaman or facilitator during an Ayahuasca ceremony
• How did the Amazonians, with over 40,000 plus plants in the jungle, not only discover Ayahuasca, but learn how to prepare and brew it?
• For what purpose did the tribes in the South American Amazons use Ayahuasca?
• How safe is it?
• Its use for trauma (including generational) and addiction recovery around the world

Nice to be back with you all. Hope this finds you in good spirits. We've got another story to share. Today Justin joins us, and he's got a story to tell.

From a small town in Montana with a population of roughly 300 people. Justin enjoyed time as a child. Remembering the times his mother would take him up to the mountains in a jeep. But things would get a little shaky as he got older. As a teenager, rumors and false accusations began to spread about him. It turned ugly quick. And he was bullied because of it. Being harassed, and threatened in and out of school. And an angry mob of teens, attacking him, out of fear, Justin dropped out of school. He refused to go out in public, stayed inside, and completely out of sight.

Reflecting back as an adult, Justin talks with us about what he was going through as a child. As well as the emotions, pain, fears, and destructive habits that would follow-- heavy drinking, gambling, and depression. Destroying his health, relationships, and desire to live. Eventually he hit a wall, and became sick of the person he had become. And that's when things started to change. He's now enjoying life on his terms. With being creative, traveling, and enjoying a healthy relationship with both his daughters. We've got another GIANT AMONTS US folks, and I'm sure you'll enjoy this one.

Today on GIANTS AMONGST US Noah joins us, and he's got a story to tell. Noah's a young man who was born with a spinal cord disorder known as Spina Bifida. He's paralyzed from the waist down. He talks with us about how it was for him growing up, and the struggles and challenges of trying to connect with other school kids. One big help for him was joining an adaptive sport.

"So for 10 years, I played a sport called sled hockey ..... But I think that period of my life kinda made me realize that, it's not fun being alone ... you don't wanna be alone, you want to be able to share your life with people." - Noah

From some of the stigma's regarding disability, to accommodations or a lack of for people who are disabled, and things of interest, like reading, and building an online community based off the reality shows Big Brother and Survivor. Noah shares not only his struggles with us, but he also talks about his goals and hope for the future. Showing heart, and fighting an uphill battle, this young man is one of the GIANT AMONGST US.

I'm glad to be back and excited to share a new story with you all today. After putting a pause on things for a brief moment, we're back on track, John joins us, and he's got a story to tell. John is a quadriplegic who happens to be 100% grateful things turned out that way. He was in a motorcycle accident, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. John called that moment in his life his "hard reset" - the chance to do things the way he should of done them in the first place.

Before his accident, John was womanizer. Addicted to crack and obsessed with women, he found himself spiraling completely out of control, and that went on for years. John shares some childhood memories with us, and life before and after the accident. After listening to his story you'll get a better idea of why he calls himself the "Grateful Quad." He's not angry or bitter with the way things turned out he's GRATEFUL to be alive, and spreading positivity with his second chance at life. And John's also another GIANTS AMONGST US.

As we take a small breather between the stories shared. Which, we have two more stories in the pocket that'll be published during this month. I wanted to share some of my thoughts after now being a few episodes in, and also talk about one of the big motivations for this Podcast. There's been people in my life as I'm sure there's been people in your life that have been a light of hope, and reason of truth, for you wanting to be and do better. Sometimes, we can neglect and take these people for granted. But their influence remains, if even at a subconscious level. It's still there!

My Wife is the one. She's my GIANT. She's my ray of light, hope, life, and strength. She's all of that and then some. She's had her fight from early on, and it's much too much to name here. But, she's still smiling, pushing, kicking and LIVING. My prime example of making the best of any condition, and doing what you can with what you have control of in order to better your situation.

To everyone who's been involved in the Show so far, THANK YOU for your openness, your time, your words, and your courage to want to share something so personal and intimate about yourself. There's power in your testimony, and I know that there's people all over who can and will benefit from it. None of this is in vain. We are back with another one. And right out the gate, hope you're doing just fine. Today Yvette joins us and she's got a story to tell.

Since the age of 9 years old Yvette has struggled with Mental Health. Her childhood was broken up by abuse, and bullying. Being so young, and without any outside support, Yvette talks about the struggles she had with trying to cope with the pain - self harm, cutting, and even suicide attempts. At fourteen years old her mental health and depression seemed to only get worse. Yvette tried therapy, but that was something at the time through no fault of the therapist that didn't work.

We're going to hear how Yvette came to find Therapy in writing. Journaling, and that wonderful tool known as 'writing' to express her emotions, experiences, dreams, passions, and past traumas has been a big part of her recovery. Rising out of a dark hole and inspired to help others by sharing her story, I'd like to welcome another GIANT AMONGST US. A big THANK YOU once again to Yvette for opening up a few pages in her story and sharing it with us.

Yvette also talked about her love for castles, cathedrals and the architecture behind them, the pyramids in Egypt, her plans on visiting Transylvania in the upcoming months, checking out a "smash room", and of course her book Mind, Music, Love, that's almost ready to be published.

Good Monday all, hope this finds you well,

Pleased to be back for another sit down. Today, I'd like to share a bit of my experience with drinking Syrian Rue for the first time. This is another installment of 'In Between The Stories'. I recently returned from Cologne, Germany. About a 1 1/2 hour train ride from where I live. The reason for my visit? - I had a date with Mama Ayahuasca. If you haven't already, I encourage you to check out https://giantsamongstus.org/episode/healing-and-transformation-my-first-hand-experiences-with-ayahuasca-allan Allan, who's had a long history with Ayahuasca, and its usage in helping with addictions, trauma, and healing. Allan's spent plenty of time in Peru with lineage Shipibo shamans. And he does a great job with breaking down some of the stigma's regarding Ayahuasca, as well as the plants history, and why its considered so sacred amongst the Amazonians.

And my wife, as an early birthday gift, granted me access and provided the means to make it all happen. I'm not trying to convince you of anything. This is merely my own personal account. A communion with a plant that has been part of antiquity and the lives of our ancestors, for survival, wisdom, healing, and a deep connection to earth, nature, soul, and spirit, for thousands, and thousands of years. This isn't about a brand new drug, "FDA approved" that just hit the shelves.

I only ask that you take this in with an open mind. Allowing yourself quality time, in solitude, to start exploring the inner dynamics that make up the constellation that is you. It's definitely a process worth pursuing.

Hope this finds you all in good spirits. We're back with another installment, and pleased to bring another story to light. Today Margaret joins us and she's got a story to tell.

Living twenty years with an undiagnosed autoimmune disease, she explains the utter anguish of it all. Her concerns were dismissed by eight doctors. They insisted she see a psychiatrist instead. Holding steadfast to her faith, it's a miracle Margaret was able to hold on long enough to find the help.

Margaret Mary O’Connor has made it her life's mission to stand on truth. Thankful, and grateful she's been given a second chance at life. And an author of two books Scandal In The Shadows, uncovering threads of early Church history and hidden truths regarding women priesthood in the catholic church. Her second book Journey of a Celiac's Soul: A Second Chance at Life, is meant to act as a vehicle for encompassing the present changing realities within the Catholic Church. Welcome back! Hope this finds you all in good spirits. If any of you are new to the Show, this is GIANTS AMONGST US. Where we share in that unique Human experience. I'm picking up on a theme started a while back - "In Between The Stories." Today, walk with me down memory lane. As I recall two "close calls" if you will, where things could of turned bad, but luckily, not. It's a few memories that I had while living in El Monte, California. A city about 15 miles East of Los Angeles, for anyone unfamiliar with the area.

First one happened when I was about 5 years old. While playing on top of the staircase, I fell and cracked my head open. Happened to chip my skull, and might of even knocked a few screws loose. But, the doctor stitched me right back up, and I was right back on the horse in no time. Second one, was a few years later. I was in 3rd grade, and 8 years old. A kid from the same school, tried stabbing me. He was a year younger than me.

It's good to be back with another edition of the Show. Hope you all are in good spirits. Today Peter joins us, and he's got a story to tell.

Peter comes from humble beginnings "I grew up off grid....like solar power house....my dad would haul water, and pump it up this huge hill." He would ride bikes, build mini bikes, wreck a few every now and then. It was an interesting childhood, but beautiful with two loving parents. Unfortunately, Peter would lose his mother to breast cancer. He was only 12 years old when his mother passed away. Struggling with grief, and losing his mother, he started acting out. Although, Peter would be the first to tell you that's no excuse for his actions.

Things would eventually escalate. From smoking weed, and stealing cars to meth and heroin addiction. Peter's life quickly stared to spiral out of control. His addiction took him down a dark path of selling dope, robbing, people over dosing around him, being on the streets, hustling for his next high and then hitting a wall - county jail. Peter's made some BIG changes in life since then. He's started an LLC, owning a business and pushing to hit six figures this year. Plus he's sober. I'd like to introduce another GIANT AMONGST US, and let Peter's story remind you, that it's never too late.

It's nice to be back. Hope this finds you in good spirits. Today Kim joins us, and she's got a story to tell.

As a child, and through her early school years, Kim's family moved around quite a bit. That meant her having to adjust with living in different states, and changing schools. Being Asian-American, Kim dealt with racism, and being picked on and bullied by class mates. She talks about how that affected her as a young girl, and even as an adult.

Kim talks about the birth of her two children, and post partum depression. In 2020, Kim gave birth to her second child. As the lockdowns from covid ramped up, so did anxiety, and the uncertainty of the times. Kim's daughter suffered from reflux issues, for seven months. Worried about her daughters health, the state of the world, and business affairs. These combined factors, along with depression and anxiety. Kim found herself spiraling downward.

In her darkest time, Kim reached out for help. Wanting to provide a supportive and loving environment for her children. Three ingredients that helped Kim with her recovery : her faith in God, a supportive husband, and therapy. In a much better place, Kim has been able to grow and establish her own photography business, based in San Diego, California.

Creating, performing, and striving, for her children, husband, and love for photography. She's now doing something she truly enjoys and has a passion for. I'd like to welcome another GIANT AMONGST US.

We've a new episode, and a new GIANTS AMONGST US. Today Nate joins us, and he's got a story to tell. Nate's a musician, who's been in love with music for as long as he can remember. At an early age, he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. With there being no real treatment or medication for his condition, he was prescribed pain killers at one point, and found himself heavily addicted for 13 years. Nate talks about the point where he finally decided to kick the habit (cold turkey), and his growing discouragement with Western medicine.

There's also 2016, where Nate was diagnosed with lung cancer - "the middle & bottom lobes of my right lung removed during a 9 hour surgery. Luckily the surgeons got all of the cancer out and I didn’t need chemo or radiation." It's not the size but the fight in the dog, and Nate's got plenty of fight in him. Despite his condition, he's still ROCKIN', he's still ROLLIN' and he's without a doubt one of the GIANTS AMONGST US. From acupuncture sessions, to hot spring waters, floating tanks, and an investment in his own sauna. Plus, the loving support of his wife and kids. Nate is still enjoying life, and doing what he loves, and that's create MUSIC.

It's great to be back to share another story with you all. I certainly do hope this finds you in good spirits. Today Jonathan joins us, and he's got a story to tell.

Originally from Ecuador. Life as a kid was pretty normal for Jonathan. He played soccer, hung out with friends, and enjoyed time with family. But at 12, life would completely change. Countless hospital visits, and huge medical cost with trying to find a treatment for his condition. Left no results. Eventually, with nothing, but the clothes on their back. Jonathan and his mother left for Canada. Seeking any kind of assistance, medically, that might help save his life. Having survived cancer twice. Jonathan recalls one of many, near death experiences.

He's also a recipient of a bone marrow transplant. 10 people underwent surgery at the same time as Jonathan, only 2 are still alive. Through the pain his body endured, the effects from chemo therapy and radiation, graft versus host disease, and a long list of other complications. He's still hopeful for the future, and doing much better.

Along with the medical staff and their support, his mother was a big reason he was able to keep fighting and stand strong. Talk about the unconditional and unwavering love a mother can have for their child. In his own words, "she was the only reason I kept fighting and held on." He also acknowledged gratitude (offline, after recording) towards the donor (from Germany) who was his perfect match. Making the transplant possible, and a success. Jonathan might be the first to give someone else credit before he gives it to himself.

But, today we're going to honor this man's courage, and resilient spirit. You're without a question, another GIANT AMONGST US. May the thoughts, well wishes, and prayers of those who listen to your story bring comfort to you, filling you with peace, and the promise of brighter days.

Hope all is well with you on this fine Sunday afternoon. Today Jason joins us, and he's got a story tell.

A retired veteran who served 31 years in the military. Jason opens up, talking about his struggles early on. From osteomyelitis, failing the first grade, and dealing with learning disabilities, Teachers and school counselors told Jason "you're not going to college." Guess what? He proved em wrong. Jason didn't just go to college, he earned 3 degrees. How in the world did he manage to do that?

Jason takes us along, sharing how life was for him overseas, and in combat. Roadside bombs, live fire, and the emotional turmoil from his father passing, plus pending accusations, and investigations his chain of command. All while being deployed. Jason walks us through these dark times, and what became of the false allegations, as well as his work towards peace, balance, and mental health.

We've got a new one, and today we're joined by Jake, from the UK. And he's got a story to tell.

Jake talks about growing up in a household that was likened to a BATTLE FIELD. The crying, thumps, and pain of his young mother being beaten by his step father, daily and for years. His feeling of being helpless, hopeless, and all of the anger, and rage, he talks about how that affected him growing up. All of the abuse as a child. And how he, despite all of it, was able to find PEACE. In his own right, walking as one of the GIANTS AMONGST US.

For Jake, meditation was a powerful part of the process for finding peace. He also talks about the importance of being able to let go, and his process with freeing himself from that endless, negative loop of suffering and trauma. And how someone struggling with the same can find and discover peace for themselves. There was a lot unpacked today.
