Bernd and Claudia overlanding the world in their Land Rover Defender
They purchased their rusty old Land Rover Defender, four years ago as Bernd was working as a project manager in the IT industry, getting burnt out with life at home in a hectic career. With no idea of car mechanics, Bernd turned his Defender into a overlanding camper with lots of blood and sweat, gave it the name Calimero, and left their home in Germany, March of 2017. Bernd and Claudia have now been through Iran, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, parts of China, Tajikistan, Pakistan and India; just to name a few. We caught up with them as they were awaiting Calimero to arrive in Halifax Canada to start a two year North America overland tour.

Staying laser focused on their dreams of living an untether lifestyle, Ernesto and Taisa planned and saved for their multi year, multi country overland trip for two years. Leaving what most of us consider "dream jobs" in Seattle Washington on July 18, 2015.

Tune into their three part episode to hear their stories of adventure along with SO many tips and lessons learned along the way. Ernesto and Taisa are like all of the guests featured on the GHT Overland Podcast; extremely friendly, very fun to talk with and so gracious with their time. Sharing their stories and experiences from overlanding the americas over the last two and half years. They provide border crossing tips, gear insights, along with a bit of a reality check when you embark on a multi year overlanding trip. Life happens and you can't be right there to hug a loved one, or to celebrate special life moments. A prospective we've not heard before on the podcast, however one that we greatly appreciate and have taken to heart.

Three friends and two overland trucks; Gary, Tina and Matt, all from South of England worked together for a satellite company. After dreaming and talking about world travel and overlanding for the last 18 years, they have finally set off. In the beginning of 2015 the three friends finally had enough, there had to be more to life than working in an office. It was time put plans into action and start living. They expect to be on the road for 18 months before heading back to the UK to visit family and friends, service their trucks and head for Africa for a two year overland trip.

Travis Rabenberg with YetiAmbo first traveled the world on a motorcycle; he then completed a 27,000 mile overland trip from Michigan to Chile. Travis sold his 2001 E350 Sportsmobile before leaving Chile and flew back to Michigan to start his next conversion, a 2008 Duramax 4x4 ambulance. He then converted his ambulance in 90 days for his Alaska trip; included a DRZ 400 dirt bike on the back to enjoy his adventures, knowing he’d finish-up any remaining details along the way. Travis plans to enjoy plenty of kiteboarding, rock climbing, stand up paddle boarding, and spear fishing along the way.

There’s a lot to learn from this episode as Travis walks us through his philosophy of preparing and departing for an overland trip. He also provides plenty of tips for the digital nomad working on the road, along with a plethora of added details when building out an overland rig. What details and modifications make a big difference, and why perfecting each detail can hijack your overlanding adventures longer than necessary.

As an extra reference, Travis also recommended having Medical Evacuation insurance. Do your own research, however companies like Global Rescue, MedjetAssist and GEOS are well established companies and worth a strong consideration. The company Travis recommends is MedjetAssist, he also carries insurance with his SPOT satellite messenger.

Be sure to check out Travis’s book Party Like a Billionaire, and his upcoming book Vanlife as a Digital Nomad

NW Overland Rally in Plain, WA. USA
If you've not heard, overlanding is growing with significant popularity. Why? Well in our opinion; simple. Adventure, the outdoors, travel and meeting the most warm hearted people around the globe is everything the sole is yearning for. We attended the NW Overland Rally and could not have been more grateful, humbled and flat out felt welcomed. From the few "celebrities" (absolutely normal awesome people) who blew the doors open on the concept of overlanding, to amazing people with either zero, or several years of experience. We found all of them open to chat with us with warm smiles, open hearts and willing to share their stories on the GHT Overland Podcast.

This episode is a re-cap of our experience at the rally, with about a 20 min. reel of the attending vendors telling you who they are and what they offer. Interestingly we heard an attendee ask Clay from XOverland if he felt the industry was becoming too commercialized. You may or may not feel one way or another, we see that as a personal opinion. Some will say yes, and corporate sponsorships or involvement is not welcome. We say, cool. Keep it simple and go have an amazing time. Our take is that we appreciate and enjoy the innovations, comfort, and gear that make our adventures fun, relaxed and documented. At the end of the day the Vagabroads said it best; You do you :)

Enjoy!

Show Notes & Links
The following are the names and links in alphabetical order for the vendors attending the rally. We hope you enjoy their 30 second (+/-) personal introductions to you.

We had the privilege of catching up with Team Free Range Dames at the NW Overland Rally in Plain, WA. After a short conversation with Elise, seeing her passion along with her genuine persona, we knew having her and her partner Mercedes on the podcast was something you would find great value in. Enjoy this live interview from our booth at the rally as we learn about their story and the importance of their message.

Elise and Mercedes are two women competing in the 2018 Rebelle Rally, the first offroad navigational challenge of its kind in the United States. The course spans over 2,000 km (1,243 miles) from Lake Tahoe to San Diego. Elise will be navigating while Mercedes commands the driving portion in their 2012 Toyota Tacoma (provided by Bomber Products) during this ten day overlanding challenge. Adding to the complexity of the rally, the Rebelle Rally prohibits the use of GPS! Relying 100% on old-school map and compass skills along with dead-reckoning. Keeping with these “back to basics” skills, there will also be no Binoculars, Zoom lenses greater than 200mm or 12x zoom lens capabilities, Personal maps with a scale less than 1:500000, Any Internet enabled device (including iPhones, iPods, etc.), Any two-way radios, Any rally computer that has a TSD mode that corrects or provides information for course corrections, deviations, calculation corrections including: Alfa Elite, Timewise, Rally GDP, TSD Rally Runner, RallyCore XSI, etc.. (we’re unclear if they can stop at the gas station and ask for directions :) we do believe having fun is encouraged.

This isn’t a race for speed, but a vehicle-based event that uses navigation skills and driving wits to find hidden checkpoints across the Nevada and California desert (as well as Glamis sand dunes). Rally teams need to find each checkpoint at the right time, in the right distance, while only using maps, compass, and a road book.

Our interview with Elise and Mercedes was full of passion, along with an impressive message we feel strongly about supporting. Empowering women and women leaders within the overlanding industry, much like any industry is an equal balance. We welcome and encourage the leadership of women like Elise and Mercedes, along with everyone else as equals.

A little about these two awesome women:

Elise is a passionate explorer who strongly believes in “making it happen” with a combination of grit and simply taking the first step. Elise is a freelancer specializing in geospatial applications, web development who also helps her husband Josh with his business, Bomber Products. Recently, Elise co-founded Big Sky Overland Rally, the first overlanding event of its kind in Montana.

Mercedes is a Portland Oregon-based freelancer and adventurer who specializes in all things related to vehicular adventure travel. She, along with her husband Andy, run Crankshaft Culture, an automotive website dedicated to “getting out there” (no matter what type of vehicle you own). Mercedes, a dual citizen of the United States and Germany, loves to travel. Her most recent trips include exploring New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and many of the western states.

Richard and Ashley with Desk to Glory joined us live at the NW Overland Rally in Plain, WA. USA. Our first live, in-person interview, and what fun! Learning about their decision to make a life change, selling most of their belongings in October of 2013 and hitting the road five months later. They explained a number of realities in going from idea, to taking the physical actions and doing it. You don’t absolutely need every question answered; you don’t need every piece of gear purchased, or vehicle upgrades done; it’s a matter of getting the big items taken care of and going.

Something we hear often rang true with Richard and Ashley, “you’ll figure it out” and “everything will work out and be fine”. Their two part interview is packed with value and inspiration! They mention several great resources and books by other experienced overland travelers (see notes below for links). You should immediately follow @DesktoGlory on social media to keep up with these two amazing overlanders. For more information on their overlanding travels, check out their blog at http://desktoglory.com/blog/ you will find SO much information from British Columbia to Ushuaia (the most southern city in the world).

Running From Monday - Overlanding the Pan-American Highway
KP and Taylor are “Running from Monday” two highschool sweethearts traveling the world together. Oddly enough KP had told Taylor several years ago they should drive to Argentina, Taylor followed that up by telling him that was the stupidest things she’d ever heard. Today Taylor has a 2nd place finish in the Rebelle Rally as the navigator in the first ever Rebelle, she’s a champion for women overlanders, helping start Women Overlanding the World, while KP is well known for his mechanic skills within the overlanding community along with taking flying lessons as he works on his pilot's license.

On The Bus Podcast is a medium to interview, converse, and share stories with other young adults living out their dreams. Brandon Reese and Daniel Blum find people who have unique career paths, that are successful and filled with insight, to sit down and share conversations with them on the bus. They believe that collaboration and relationships are drivers for innovation and happiness, so they drove a school bus from Utah, down through South America to Chile. After spending 10 months and 10,000 treacherous miles... traveling across 6 countries, enduring breakdowns and stuck tires, all while dealing with a bevy of parasites, diseases, broken laptops, and hospital visits, their passion became sharing their story, and the stories of the people they met along the way.

Overlander Marco Mok from Holland Africa Tour:
Marco has been overlanding and exploring with the Holland Africa Tour since 2004 starting with a trip from Sudan to Ethiopia. Shortly after he followed up with an overlanding trip from Cameroon to Chad, followed by several trip in Morocco. The Holland Africa Tour (HAT) uses three M.A.N. trucks (German truck brand); a 8x8 for storage of relief goods and supplies. A 6x6 with two cabins for up to seven passengers, also used for the tours kitchen and crew member belongings. Their newest addition, a 4x4 used for spare parts and supporting equipment.

Most impressive to us is the Holland Africa Tours humanitarian efforts. From donations of cars, a piano, to ropes, shoes and soccer balls. They are always bringing smiles to the most remote villages in Africa, based completely on their experience and relationships built over many years. Knowing what people need and what will make life for them a little better. You will want to look into what they are doing and consider a tour with them to see first hand, parts of the world you’ve only imagined from documentaries on National Geographic. Do not expect catered meals and room service, expect to become part of a team changing lives, yours is sure to be forever impacted! The Gratitude from those you help, to the Humbling feeling of just how appreciative and kind people are for your Tenacity to get off the couch and doing something good for them, asking nothing in return.

See the movie (documentary) link below from the Holland Africa Tour - it is unquestionably worth your time!

Emily and Aaron discussing ethical travel and Overland Adventure.
A nurse and a teacher by profession, insatiable travelers the rest of the time! Emily and Aaron write the “Two Dusty Travelers”. A blog about responsible and off the beaten path travel.

First discovered overlanding while living in East Africa, they ran into a couple with a Land Rover with a rooftop tent and immediately fell in love with the idea. They love getting away from the crowds to experience remote place for themselves, so overlanding has been a perfect getaway to have those unique experiences as overlanders.

Since their passion for overlanding was sparked, they’ve converted their Subaru Forester into an overland vehicle, recently spending three weeks traveling around National Parks in the western US (on top of getting out almost every weekend in their home base in the Pacific Northwest!). When Aaron and Emily travel internationally, they almost always rent a vehicle, overland camping to see the country. They’ve done this in Kenya, Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Aruba. They write their blog and maintain their social media accounts as a way to encourage people to bypass the resorts and immerse themselves in the country they've traveled to.

Big believers that you don't need all the time and money in the world in order to get out there and enjoy overlanding! Overland Travel can be a force for good, passionate about empowering you to explore in ways that help, not harm, the incredible world that we share!

The Hollis family is Team Hunt Adventure
Talking with Mike and Ellen Hollis you’re immediately aware of the passion and love they have for their son Hunt; as all parents do for their children however there’s something very humbling you will learn. At their most joyous moment of welcoming their son into their loving family, something was not right. Eventually they were told Hunt may not walk, and within a year of testing the doctors diagnose Hunt with mitochondrial disease. A chronic genetic disorder that’s associated with slow growth and developmental delays. Mike and Ellen explain to us how Hunt’s GI system is affected and although it took lots of physical therapy, braces on his legs, a walker, and special shoes, Hunt is now a very active 9 year old boy who walks, runs and loves hiking!

In this two part episode with the Hollis family you will hear a family with true “GHT” as we call it. With Gratitude towards every moment they spend as a family, to everyone who’s supported them, and especially to those who are kind towards others without judgment. Humble is saying it lightly from a family that remains laser focused on their son, however has raised nearly $500,000 to support other families facing similar challenges. Mike even did a Triathlon with a thirty year old man with mitochondrial disease, pulling him in a raft for the swim section, pulling him in a trailer during the bike sections that then doubled as the same trailer Mike pushed him in for the final running portion. There’s no question the Hollis family has Tenacity in tackling life in a positive way regardless of the challenges they face.

We met Mike, Ellen and Hunt in a Safeway parking lot after the NW Overland Rally. Now you are about to enjoy learning about their story and how Overland Adventure is their best therapy for challenges beyond what most of us face. So, if Overlanding is therapy for Hollis family, Overland Adventure; or as Hunt would say, Jeep Crawling is surely great for everyone else!

After the Rebelle
Mercedes and Elise completed their first Rebelle Rally with impressive results. We follow up with these two bad-ass women after first talking with them in June as they were planning for the event. They share stories of sheep blocking the roads, flying "just a little bit", and all the good stories from such an amazing event.

These are two strong women that should inspire all women to tackle off-road adventure in ways that will challenge you and teach you some of the finer skills in overlanding.

The Results:
Tied 20th overall in the 4x4 class
Top 1/3rd of the 4x4 rookie teams

Tied 20th overall in the 4x4 class

Overlanders from Europe, Hungary who quit their jobs at the end of last year. Evelin (27) worked in online marketing and Ferenc (38) is a lawyer, specialized in mutual funds. They’ve been together for 4 years and during that time had done a few backpacking trips in Asia, but also done a couple of major overland trips before their current trip. Last year they discovered northern Europe and in early 2018 travelled to Africa, which turned out to be a test run for their equipment and vehicle. Based on these trips they made modifications to their vehicle and equipment setup.

We travelled a lot together, and planned this trip since mid-2017. I (Ferenc) have driven all the way from London to Mongolia in 2014 (long story because we actually had to sell the car in Tajikistan) and this trip had basically made me want to do a similar trip again. That’s when I started to look into this type of travel a bit further, reading about it, watching loads of youtube videos in this niche.

Leaving the 9-5 world opens up your perspective, your view on the world and makes you realise that there is more to life than just the routine. Overlanding is making you capable of reaching places where it would be more difficult or even impossible to get to in a conventional way (as a usual/typical tourist).

Dominik Reinhard - Motorcycle Adventurist
OVERLANDING SOUTH AMERICA SOLO

Dominik is a solo motorcycle adventure rider from Germany who quit his corporate job in Switzerland, sold all his belongings and started the adventure of a lifetime. Over a period of two and half years Dominik traveled from Vietnam, Laos; jumped to New Zealand for three months, before he flew to Brazil to purchase a BMW 700 GS named “Fury”. Thirty countries and 65,000 km later, Dominik had overlanded the Americas from Brazil, down through South America, turned North and ended in Alaska.

Highly curious about life, Dominik loves exploring new countries, people and cultures. He found a love for the independence and close contact with mother natures nature forces. In Dominiks words “These are the moment when I truly feel alive”.

What Dominik initially thought would be a three month backpacking trip in 2016, resulted in a 2 1/2 year overlanding journey around the world.

Venturesome Overland - Steve and Julie of Missoula Montana

We caught up with Steve and Julie in their current home of Gaborone, Botswana where Julie is a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Botswana. Both Julie and Steve have been on the teaching staff at Overland Expo East and Expo West. They’ve visited over 25 countries in their adventures around the world as Julie continues to follow her passion as a traveling writer and photographer.

As you will hear in their two part episode, Steve is the planner with a good number of helpful insights for planning your next overland trip. Impressively they had nothing on their latest overlanding trip in Africa they didn't use. This speaks volumes to the experience they've gained over the last few years!

This is a wonderful two part episode as we tackle more in-depth questions on cooking setups, why specific gear was chosen, along with tackling the details on finances. Julie and Steve were very generous in providing in-depth knowledge and prospective that will prove extremely valuable to you as you’re planning your next overlanding adventure.

Download their episodes now, sharing them with a friend or two as we listen to their stories of one of their favorite places; the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, along with another new segment of the podcast; road stories! Find out if they were looking for flowers or flour.

An amazing couple who quit their jobs, sold most everything, to live in their truck “Goose”. Exploring the world from Arizona, USA through South America, one dirt mile at a time, sunrise to sunrise. A super fun couple with impressive amounts of knowledge and experience in the off-road and overlanding industry. While at the same-time, living a full time lifestyle of overland travel.

Kelsey has been teaching at Overland Expo for the last four years, while Tim has been an Overland Expo instructor since its inception. The amount of experience between Tim and Kelsey attracted us to having them on the podcast. What we found was a fun, easy to talk to couple, who were open to sharing their experiences, stories and tips, for all overlanders to enjoy and learn from. We strongly encourage you to subscribe to their YouTube channel for some of the best documented Overland Travel on Youtube, with the same level of light humor and honest thoughts on their experiences along the way.

Be sure to listen to both Part 1 & Part 2 as we walk through in-depth details on their overall setup, favorite places visited, financing tips and dirt loads more :)

Time being more precious than money, memories more valuable than things and experiencing new places, new people and cultures, was going to be much more valuable to them and their children than reading about them in books. Carola and Stefano are both from Hamburg, Germany now overlanding full time as digital nomads. We cover a lot of great topics from their truck, border crossings, finances and how they’re able to overland travel full-time while working.

We knew when they described themselves as the Chill Commissioner and Social Officer, along with their dog as a Heartbreaker of the Lady Dogs; we were going to have a fun conversation. Join us in this two part episode for a fun conversation, packed with knowledge, experience and fun stories from their overland adventures.

If you take a retired Stewart and Stevenson M1078 in all its past glory, give it the love and craftsmanship it deserves for post war life; you might be fortunate enough to end up overlanding beauty and beast style. Or in this case, Hippie and the Beast style with Trevor and Kourtney.
Originally we ran across @wazimulife on social media, immediately stopping to admire their massive M1078 build, then lured in deeper with their gorgeous interior design, displayed with stunning perfection. Okay, we admit, we thought we were looking at two separate builds... As we looked closer, we were more than enthralled to discover it was all the same build! If you take the time to read further, you will discover two people with overflowing talents, hearts of passion, interlaced with humility, along with a raw but refreshing style of honesty.
In this two part episode with Trevor and Kourtney you will find inspiration, stories of experience, build ideas for your own, along with a deep style of honesty that is all too rare in the "everything is perfect" world that's generally on display. Enjoy the gorgeous pictures, the craftsmanship, the inspiration; and remember to take the time to read the words within a social media post, especially at @wazimulife

This week we ask you and the overlanding community as a whole to pause - pause for a moment to give your strongest thoughts of support, thoughts of safety, and or prayers; whatever it is that you do.

Our friends Jolie King and Mark Firkin of The Way Overland need you. They need all of us. They need every thought, every prayer, all of our positive energy working in their favor.

Please pass this along for more awareness, more people being aware of their situation and their absolute desperate need for as much positive thoughts, energy, prayers, or all of it, whatever it is that you feel good about doing. Their situation could not be more dire. It is our hope that they are immediately released safely, back to each other, and back to their families.

Jolie and Mark, our hearts ache for both of you. With love and support, we can not wait to see that you’ve been safely released.

When it comes to powering up all your electronics, or just knowing you can start your overlanding vehicle of choice each morning, battery health and all that comes with the ability to keep the fridge cold, the LED lights bright and a strong winch ready for the toughest jobs at the worst moment; having safe reliable power is essential to all overland travelers.
David Walls of Overland Power Solutions joins us this week for a special educational episode on powering your adventures. Safety was at the top of my mind as David and I talked all things electric for overlanders. We cover battery types; pros, cons, types, cost, longevity… Dive deep into DC to DC charging versus using a battery isolator, overland solar options, and of course safety. How do you wire it all up without fireish nightmares?
To no surprise, there’s a lot that goes into designing and installing your electric system safely. As David points out several times, there's no shortage of available information on the subject. It’s about narrowing it down specifically for you and how you’re going to use the system so that it can perform optimally. Information paralysis is real, we appreciated the depth of knowledge David has along with his ability to break that knowledge down in a way most anyone can understand it.
Checkout the episode for usable information you can put into practice immediately. We learned a lot, and hope you will also benefit from the education David provided. You can also reach out to David with the links provided below. Consider Overland Power Solutions if (like us) you’re not an expert in proper electrical system design and/or installation. As life has probably taught most of us by now, do it right the first time, or fix it pronto. Get the best quality parts possible the first time to save money down the road replacing broken or burnt (super bad) stuff.

An impressive way to do a honeymoon, without question! Cory and Brie caught our attention as they left for their mega-moon overlanding trip about a year ago. We’d never heard of a “mega-moon”, and these newlyweds were doing it overlanding style! Apparently the mega-moon idea is fairly popular. The idea consisting of a multi-country or even multi-continent itinerary.
On October 8th 2018 in Seattle WA Cory and Brie pointed Ullr (their Toyota Tacoma) South, and hit the gas pedal. We caught up with them (virtually speaking) in Chile to learn from their experiences over the last year, hear their stories from the road and talk all things overland travel.
Check out their two episodes as they celebrate their 1 year anniversary on the road as newlyweds, overland travelers, skiers and adventure enthusiasts. Be sure to check out their blog and social media pages (links below) they’ve amassed an epic collection of blog posts documenting their trip and experiences in each country. You can also read about their truck and camper prep, packing list, insurance plans… everything!

As we look for new potential guests to interview, we tend to be attracted to those with multiple countries visited, overland travelers who highlight local foods, local people and their experiences. Not necessarily that perfectly beautiful social media page, rather those that share the great parts of overland travel alongside the challenging parts, or even the regular day to day life of an overlander. Michel and Renée of @Overlanding_the_World exemplify all of these characteristics, so you can imagine our excitement when they agreed to an interview.
An Amsterdam couple who decided an overlanding trip around the world was a much better idea than buying a house (we totally agree!). This a fun interview loaded with great information, tip and stories from the road. Michel & Renée also agreed to dive deeper on overlanding safety, and why they choose to visit countries like Iran and Pakistan. It’s an eye opening conversation as we try to better understand why so many overlanders are still visiting countries with such political turmoil.
Of course we also discussed all our normal topics and enjoyed their stories from all their overlanding experiences as they follow the sun around the world. Be sure to follow them on social media for their firsthand accounts of each country they visit.

Dirk started traveling on a motorbike in 1989, before that he’d travel with his father as a international truck driver to different countries. After purchasing their Unimog with a plan to build it out over three years, Sonja decided after one year they needed to start their overlanding adventure around the world as soon as possible. Just go! Now on the road for over one and a half years, they will occasionally stop for a week or so to make changes or add upgrades as they travel.
The naming of their truck was genius; wanting to make sure the potentially intimidating looking machine had a friendly name, they wanted to be approachable to people as they traveled. ELMO is an acronym for Expedition (E) Survival / überleben (L) Mobile (MO) making it easier to have contact with new friends. And who wouldn’t smile at a cute little red guy on a Unimog.
Dirk and Sonja go through a lot of great tips and stories in this two part episode, not excluding the harder parts of overlanding in areas of the world that are in war, safety is a vital consideration. Sonja and Dirk do a great job of going through all these helpful details, along with many tips and good stories of their overlanding adventures.
