11 Feb 2024 | Can a dog look Brave but actually be Anxious? | 00:23:15
Ever seem like your dog is scared or anxious about a trigger, but still going up to them and sniffing? In other words, does it seem like your dog is anxious or worried about an event, but still demonstrating brave signals?
This episode talks about dogs who experience anxiety attacks while simultaneously demonstrating behaviors associated with bravery. The discussion originated from a coaching call where Team Lola and Mater's interactions sparked curiosity about the complex interplay between anxious and brave behaviors in dogs.
"You must train your eye to look objectively, to get rid of outside bias. We must reject blanket statements on social media. Saying a lip lick means this is one thing. Saying a lip lick is correlated to stress. So, you need to keep an eye out for it, and you need to track where in your dog's stress repertoire does the lip lick occurs."
We explore the paradoxical nature of a dog's response to adversity, considering both the biological fight, flight, or freeze responses and the historical selection of certain breeds for traits that defy self-preservation. This episode challenges conventional labels attached to behaviors, emphasizing the need to objectively observe and interpret a dog's actions without predetermined notions of good or bad, stress or bravery.
Join us in unraveling the nuanced dynamics of anxiety, bravery, and the importance of objectively assessing canine behavior in this thought-provoking conversation.

21 Dec 2021 | Did YOU Cause Your Dog’s Anxiety? The Nurture vs Nature Debate | 00:28:34
How much do genetics affect a dog’s behavior? Greatly! In the nature vs nurture debate, your dog’s history and genetics both play a big role in shaping his behavior. 04 Feb 2024 | Reactive Dogs with SO MANY Triggers - It’s Overwhelming | 00:08:03
How can I manage my dog's reactive behavior?
Today, we have a listener, Lorena, who reached out with a question about her dog, Scooby. A curious and social pup, Scooby still faced reactivity during his puppy training days. In fact, he ultimately got kicked out of Puppy School for his overwhelming desire to play with other dogs.
"In dog training, tackling every issue at once is like deciding to play every position in a basketball game. Start with one, master it, then move on."
As Scooby has grown, he's become more reactive towards other dogs, leaving Lorena puzzled about whether it's aggression or something else. She describes his behavior, including a deeper growl and assertive gestures with some dogs, while being more curious and tentative with others.
Lorena shares Scooby's unpredictable reactions and her attempts to hide behind cars or bushes to avoid explosive behavior from Scooby.
Jenna breaks down all the overwhelming triggers (and pieces of the reactive dog puzzle) so that Lorena can create an action plan.
Listen in as Lorena and Jenna discuss Scooby’s goals so that Lorena can create a training plan.

10 May 2022 | When Your Dog Is Not Generalizing What They Learn in Class to Real World Events | 00:20:39
The problem with the “I’ll teach you how” method is that it doesn’t go past the steps. It gives you a superficial understanding of a skill so you don’t understand how to apply it to a different context. A lot of the time we want a simple answer, but when it comes down to your dog’s recovery, you have to look at the bigger picture. In this episode of the Dog Liaison Podcast, I discuss the importance of going deep to get to the root of your training techniques, and other tips to help your dog apply what he learns in class to real-world events.

10 May 2022 | Making Data-Driven Decisions in Treating Your Dog’s Anxiety | 00:27:25
I am a firm believer in converting guardians into experts on their own dogs. I don’t want anyone I work with to feel reliant on me for every problem they have. I want you to feel empowered to make good decisions in your dog’s training, based on the data. In this episode of the Dog Liaison Podcast, I talk about the importance of logging your dog’s progress, what to log, and how to reflect on your data. The goal here is to take something that is highly subjective and make it as objective, factual, and measurable as possible.

When your dog starts demonstrating reactivity to triggers, a trainer says, “Just walk him around the park. Expose him to the triggers. And he’ll get over it.”
So you’ve been doing this ‘exposure to the triggers’ method for some time, only to realize it’s still not working.
This episode breaks down why not.
"Exposing your dog to triggers without a strategic approach is like expecting a[n artwork] masterpiece without understanding the brush strokes."

Many dog owners attempt exposure without the desired results, leading to frustration. This episode provides a critical analysis of desensitization techniques, shedding light on the vulnerability to errors and the need for a more refined approach.

24 Nov 2023 | The Formula for Training Dogs | 00:19:35
Every dog is unique, and that means individualizing their training plans. But that does not mean there isn’t a formula for dog training.
Yes, there is indeed a formula to train dogs. And we’re unpacking that formula for you in today’s episode.
“I don't do basic skills, I don't do puppies, and that's for several reasons. But one main reason is that most of the stuff that is put in those programs, I personally believe, should be FREE.”
In the world of dog training, where countless techniques and methods are touted, it's easy to get lost in the sea of options.
But what if there was a clear path to follow, a formula that could guide us in helping our canine companions? In this thought-provoking episode, Jenna passionately outlines the core elements in addressing dog anxiety: counter conditioning, desensitization, enrichment, and building a trusting relationship.
These elements form a formula, and they are non-negotiable when it comes to training anxious dogs.
However, what sets this approach apart is the recognition that the techniques used within this formula can vary based on the context and the individual dog's needs. It's not about a one-size-fits-all approach; it's about empowering guardians to make informed choices and tailor their training to their unique situations.

10 May 2022 | What is a ‘Comprehensive Approach’ to Treating Dog Anxiety? | 00:30:17
What does taking a “comprehensive approach” to treating your dog’s anxiety actually mean? Well, it’s a lot more than tracking your dog’s sleeping and eating habits. That is just the beginning! There are about 9 things that come into play when addressing anxiety with a comprehensive approach, and in this episode of the Dog Liaison Podcast, I dive into all of them. Think about it like this… recovering your weight vs. losing 20 lbs. Losing the 20 lbs is only focusing on one problem, but recovering your weight includes focusing on your mental health as well as your physical, and allows you to have better health overall.

21 Jan 2024 | How to Handle Plateaus and Regressions in Your Dog’s Training | 00:19:55
How can we move beyond obedience commands and foster a more organic, enjoyable relationship with our dogs?
"I look at dog training like a very objective experience. It's just information. When I'm working with a dog, it's just information. I'm just learning from them. I'm just seeing what they see. I'm just experiencing what they experience."
Drawing parallels between dog training and experimentation, Jenna emphasizes the importance of treating dog training as an objective learning experience. Using examples from dog separation anxiety and dog reactivity, Jenna highlights the need for running experiments to understand a dog's behavior better.
The episode emphasizes the significance of data collection in dog training. From tracking minor stress signals to experimenting with variables like medication, training time, and triggers, Jenna guides listeners on building a comprehensive log to analyze trends and overcome training plateaus.
Lastly, Jenna advocates for breaks in training schedules, underlining their role in preventing plateaus and promoting mental well-being for both the owner and the dog.

28 Jan 2024 | Dog-Dog Reactivity: Can Tanner Become Comfortable to Play With Other Dogs? | 00:41:44
"In this episode, Jenna coaches dog guardian, Jo, through how to navigate her dog's hyperarousal towards other dogs and his resource guarding. We'll meet Tanner, a three-year-old small breed dog, who has big reactions towards other dogs when he feels threatened."
Jo talks about Tanner's playful, intelligent, and communicative nature, yet his journey is marked by anxiety-driven behaviors. Tanner exhibits resource-guarding towards unexpected treasures like a picnic blanket.
“The problem is not that he doesn't like certain dogs. The problem is that he has a compulsive reaction when he sees a certain size of a dog. And it's really important that you identify those differences because that's going to change how you set up a learning environment. Your objective in that case shouldn't be, ‘Let's get Tanner to love every single thing that he comes into contact with.’"
Jo candidly shares Tanner’s challenges faced in dog parks and play sessions, emphasizing Tanner's unique reactions to dogs based on their size and certain physical characteristics.
If you're a fellow dog guardian facing similar challenges, or if you'd like to be part of a live coaching session, don’t hesitate to reach out via Instagram DM, or email! Don't miss this episode as we embark on a journey to unravel the layers of canine behavior and enhance the bond between dogs and their guardians.

11 Jan 2024 | Is Loving Your Dog Enough To Treat Their Mental Health? | 00:09:21
Is loving your dog actually enough to recover your dog’s mental health, particularly anxiety?
"In the journey to help your dog overcome anxiety, motivation is like a roller coaster. What brings you back to action is not just love but discipline and commitment to the end game."
Jenna explores this vital question prompted by a conversation with Tara from Zen Dog Fearless Grooming. We appreciate people's deep love for their dogs, recognizing it as the beautiful foundation it is. However, as we discover, when facing a dog's anxiety disorder, rearranging your life and expressing affection are merely initial steps.
Join us as we unpack the profound insight that loving your dog is merely the starting point. The journey requires more—a commitment to discipline and a sustainable routine.
Motivation can be a roller coaster, and Jenna emphasizes the need for steadfast dedication to the end game. Drawing parallels to personal fitness journeys, we discuss how a holistic approach, beyond just passion, is crucial for long-term success.
This episode challenges the conventional narrative, urging listeners to consider a more comprehensive strategy for nurturing their canine companions. Tune in for a thought-provoking exploration of whether love alone is enough to treat your dog's mental health.

10 May 2022 | Beginner’s Guide to Treating Dog Anxiety Using Counter-Conditioning and Desensitization | 00:46:54
You walk into an environment and you’re suddenly hit with an onslaught of information. Your eyes, ears, and nose are consuming information, but your brain isn’t able to filter anything out. It’s not able to discern what is critical in this situation to pay attention to and what is not, and you don’t understand what is happening to you. That is how your dog feels when he is triggered. And in this episode of the Dog Liaison Podcast, I dig deeper into treating your dog’s anxiety. I break down desensitization and counter-conditioning, and I talk about the difference between fear as an emotion and fear as a visceral response.

01 Feb 2024 | Dog Prey Drive vs Dog Reactivity: How do they differ? | 00:11:21
Is there a real difference between prey drive activation and reactivity, and how do emotions play a role in this distinction? Distinguishing between prey drive activation and reactivity in dogs, especially around small animals triggering their instincts is the question for today that comes from Christine with Team Gigi.
"Behavior is always tied back to the essential needs of any animal—finding and hunting for food and ensuring safety. Understanding this link is crucial in distinguishing between prey drive activation and reactivity in dogs."
If we pretend for a moment that dogs are emotionless robots, the exhibited behaviors, such as lunging, pulling, or hiding, are closely tied to predatory instincts—whether the dog sees itself as the hunter or the hunted. However, of course dogs are not emotionless robots.
This episode examines the primary difference between prey drive and reactivity lies in the emotions motivating the behavior.
Next, Jenna discusses the ‘dog training’ lens: how do you actually train a dog to not go after small prey (or small breed dogs that look like prey)?
Using personal experiences with Max, a Dalmatian with a strong prey drive, we’ll discuss the importance of understanding a dog's DNA, breed characteristics, and individual reactions in evaluating the prognosis of your dog’s behavior modification.

15 Feb 2024 | Delving into the Nighttime Behavior of Reactive Dogs | 00:13:28
Did you know that dogs waking up to triggers in the middle of the night can impact their sleep quality? In a recent discussion by Team Tilly, it was revealed that dogs exhibiting this behavior, especially reactive ones, may experience disrupted sleep patterns up to 3, 4, 6, or even 7 times a night.
In this insightful discussion from Team Tilly and the Recover Rover guardians, the spotlight is on a crucial question about being a protector for your reactive aggressive dog, particularly when they wake up to triggers in the middle of the night. The conversation delves into the nuances of what it truly means to be a defender for your dog.
"When your dog barks at triggers in the middle of the night, it's not just a game – it might be a sign that their brain is on guard, attributing meaning to sounds even in sleep. The real question is, why does the brain feel the need to stay alert, and how can we address the root issue?"
Jenna explores deeper-level questions, challenging the knee-jerk reactions of immediate training or management solutions. A recurring scenario is examined: a dog waking up frequently, barking at unseen triggers, and Jenna raises thought-provoking inquiries about the dog's quality of sleep and the underlying reasons for this behavior.
Drawing parallels to childhood fears and the brain's innate response, the discussion navigates the complexities of deciding whether to play the role of Defender or let the dog independently navigate its reactions. This podcast encourages listeners to move beyond simplistic solutions and engage in a profound exploration of understanding their dog's behavior and needs, emphasizing the importance of considering individual contexts rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach.

25 Jan 2024 | Helping Dogs That Are Too Anxious to Go Outdoors | 00:48:19
Let’s dive into the story of Tara and Sully, a one-year-old dog who, after a traumatic attack at 13 weeks old, now exhibits fear and anxiety during walks. Sully freezes up, whines, pulls, and refuses food, making walks a challenging experience for both Sully and his mom.
Our live coaching session with Tara troubleshoots the issues Sully faces and establishes an actionable training plan. If you have a dog reluctant to go outside or exhibits inconsistent behavior during walks, this episode is a must-listen.
"It's really taxing to have to move at that snail's pace, and just as in human nature, we're kind of compelled to want to skip steps and move forward, and we have no choice but to keep that kind of self-control and bring ourselves back, and move at a snail's pace, and that requires a lot of effort from you.”
The conversation delves into the importance of developing a framework or process to guide experiments effectively. Tara expresses the struggle of hitting a wall in identifying possible experiments and seeks guidance on how to better educate themselves.
Jenna emphasizes the need to methodically expose oneself to challenges, drawing parallels between human experiences and the process of exposing dogs to specific situations. The discussion touches on the taxing nature of the dog recovery journey, the rewards that come with patience, and the importance of acknowledging incremental progress.
Join us for a deep dive into Sully's world, exploring Tara's efforts, challenges, and the coaching process to help Sully overcome his anxiety and fear of walks. If you've faced similar struggles with your furry friend, you'll find valuable insights in this episode. Don't miss it!

08 Feb 2024 | Dog Barking at Windows when Neighbors Walk By - What to Do | 00:13:44
Is your dog barking at the window when neighbors, dogs, and triggers go by?
Kaylee from Team Marnie shares her experiences and challenges in managing her one-and-a-half-year-old German Shepherd and Golden Retriever mix, Marnie, who exhibits window barking behavior.
"The dog will tell us what it needs if we allow it to acknowledge and process feelings. Decoding these needs becomes crucial… for understanding the dog's [window barking]."
We talk about the distinction between ACTUAL dog training techniques - not just trigger avoidance recommendations - and the limitations of using interrupters as a long-term dog barking solution.
Jenna emphasizes how to fully decode Marnie's triggering event and suggests a more effective dog training approach to counter-conditioning and desensitization.
As always, the discussion goes beyond typical dog training methods, and pinpoints reconditioning the dog's central nervous system and addressing the emotional associations before prioritizing behavioral responses.
This episode provides strategies for dog owners facing dog window barking and how they can train their dog to not be so reactive to triggers outside.

And believe me, I am not throwing shade. I have previously made all these mistakes, but I fixed them when I started niching down to become an expert in my field and learning how to teach humans as well as train dogs.
