20 May 2016Russ Baker: The Deep State & JFK00:32:50
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp2yRLMXDio Award-winning journalist Russ Baker discusses the Deep State, the life and death of John F. Kennedy, U.S. elections, journalism and WhoWhatWhy.org. To learn more about deep politics and international affairs, go to: whowhatwhy.org Websites http://whowhatwhy.org http://russbaker.com http://www.familyofsecrets.com About Russ Baker Russ Baker’s career has been about one thing: finding out what really happened—or the truth of what is currently unfolding—and presenting it to the public in a compelling, entertaining, thoughtful manner. In his reporting and writing he brings the best of mainstream methods (balance and rigor) to the alternative media, and the best of the alternative media (passion for the truth and the larger story) to the mainstream. He focuses on getting past the rhetoric to expose the hidden levers and machinations that shape our world. Baker’s investigative reporting, analysis pieces, features, and essays on politics, power, and perceptions have appeared in many of the world’s finest publications. Over the past two decades, Baker has produced over a thousand stories, most of them for magazines and newspapers and online publications — but also for television and radio — on a broad range of topics, from political revolutions to revolutionary humor. He has pursued stories in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Among other things, Baker covered Hutu-Tutsi massacres in Central Africa, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the overthrow of the longtime Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. He spent one and a half years as a correspondent and investigative reporter based in the former Yugoslavia. When not wrestling with traditional hard-news and politics, he has written essays and critiques, and profiles of colorful and controversial figures, from the notorious murderer-on-the-run Ira Einhorn (whom Baker caught up with in the French countryside) to the irreverent tv culinary hero, Iron Chef Morimoto, as he was preparing to open his first restaurant. Baker has received Society of Professional Journalists, Mencken and Common Cause awards, served as a panelist for the national conference of Investigative Reporters & Editors, and been a member of the adjunct faculty at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. He appears frequently in the electronic media to discuss current events. He is the co-founder of the journalism soirees that evolved into the company, MediaBistro. In 2004, Baker devoted himself largely to researching stories that provided new insights into the rise of George W. Bush and the policies he pursued, including the war in Iraq. He also explored the integrity of the voting system and examined instances of alleged election fraud. This research led him to begin working on a book, FAMILY OF SECRETS: The Bush Dynasty, The Powerful Forces That Put it in the White House, and What Their Influence Means for America, which was published by Bloomsbury Press in 2009. It was later issued in paperback as FAMILY OF SECRETS: The Bush Dynasty, America’s Invisible Government, and the Hidden History of the Last Fifty Years. Widely praised, it has become a best-seller, is available as an e-book, and, by early 2012, as an audio book. In 2005, Baker founded a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization dedicated to producing ground-breaking, transformative, independent investigative journalism: WhoWhatWhy.com. He spends most of his time running that site (including editing and writing for it), does public speaking, and is working on a new book. Geopolitics & Empire · Stephen Kinzer: U.S. Foreign Policy and Interventionism #033 Dr. Stephen Kinzer discusses U.S. foreign policy and interventionism and whether it is the most destabilizing force in the world today. He discusses which US presidential candidate would be worst in terms of increasing war tensions and also covers the legacy of Muhammad Ali's anti-war posture and "American exceptionalism" which is a key factor in support of US interventionism. Websites http://stephenkinzer.com https://twitter.com/stephenkinzer http://watson.brown.edu/people/visiting/kinzer http://www.amazon.com/Stephen-Kinzer/e/B001IGOJOS/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1465396272&sr=8-1 About Stephen Kinzer Stephen Kinzer is an award-winning foreign correspondent who has covered more than 50 countries on five continents. His articles and books have led the Washington Post to place him “among the best in popular foreign policy storytelling.” Kinzer’s most recent book is “The Brothers: John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, and Their Secret World War.” The novelist John le Carré called it “a secret history, enriched and calmly retold; a shocking account of the misuse of American corporate, political and media power; a shaming reflection on the moral manners of post imperial Europe; and an essential allegory for our own times.” Kinzer’s previous book was “Reset: Iran, Turkey, and America’s Future.” “Stephen Kinzer is a journalist of a certain cheeky fearlessness and exquisite timing,” The Huffington Post said in its review. “This book is a bold exercise in reimagining the United States’ big links in the Middle East.” In 2006 Kinzer published “Overthrow: America’s Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq.” It recounts the 14 times the United States has overthrown foreign governments. Kinzer seeks to explain why these interventions were carried out and what their long-term effects have been. He is also the author of “All the Shah’s Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror.” It tells how the CIA overthrew Iran’s nationalist government in 1953. Kinzer spent more than 20 years working for the New York Times, most of it as a foreign correspondent. His foreign postings placed him at the center of historic events and, at times, in the line of fire. While covering world events, he has been shot at, jailed, beaten by police, tear-gassed and bombed from the air. Before joining the New York Times, Kinzer was Latin America correspondent for the Boston Globe. He is now a visiting fellow at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University, where he teaches international relations. He contributes to The Guardian and the New York Review of Books, and writes a world affairs column for The Boston Globe. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)

11 Nov 2016Dmitry Orlov: Trump, Financial Crisis & the New Cold War00:26:24
Geopolitics & Empire · Dmitry Orlov: Trump, Financial Crisis and the New Cold War #037 Russian-American author Dmitry Orlov discusses the new Trump presidency and what it may mean for the next stage of the Global Financial Crisis and the New Cold War. He also discusses his concerns regarding the threat of GMOs and Russia's recent ban on genetically engineered crops, which could lead to a global ban. Website https://cluborlov.blogspot.com Books https://www.amazon.com/Dmitry-Orlov/e/B001JSB23G/ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1?qid=1478903123&sr=8-1 About Dmitry Orlov Dmitry Orlov is a Russian-American engineer and a writer on subjects related to "potential economic, ecological and political decline and collapse in the United States," something he has called “permanent crisis”. Orlov believes collapse will be the result of huge military budgets, government deficits, an unresponsive political system and declining oil production. Orlov was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) and moved to the United States at the age of 12. He has a BS in Computer Engineering and an MA in Applied Linguistics. He was an eyewitness to the collapse of the Soviet Union over several extended visits to his Russian homeland between the late 1980s and mid-1990s. In 2005 and 2006 Orlov wrote a number of articles comparing the collapse-preparedness of the U.S. and the Soviet Union published on small Peak Oil related sites. Orlov’s article "Closing the 'Collapse Gap': the USSR was better prepared for collapse than the US" was very popular at EnergyBulletin.Net. Orlov’s book Reinventing Collapse:The Soviet Example and American Prospects, published in 2008, further details his views. Discussing the book in 2009, in a piece in The New Yorker, Ben McGrath wrote that Orlov describes "superpower collapse soup" common to both the U.S. and the Soviet Union: “a severe shortfall in the production of crude oil, a worsening foreign-trade deficit, an oversized military budget, and crippling foreign debt.” Orlov told interviewer McGrath that in recent months financial professionals had begun to make up more of his audience, joining "back-to-the-land types," "peak oilers," and those sometimes derisively called “doomers”. In his review of the book, commentator Thom Hartmann writes that Orlov holds that the Soviet Union hit a “soft crash” because of centralized planning in: housing, agriculture, and transportation left an infrastructure private citizens could co-opt so that no one had to pay rent or go homeless and people showed up for work, even when they were not paid. He writes that Orlov believes the U.S. will have a hard crash, more like Germany’s Weimar Republic of the 1920s. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)

04 Apr 2017Senator Richard Black: New Cold War Can Go Nuclear00:35:14
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HM-pPbQUq4k&t=4s Virginia State Senator Richard Black explains the real story behind the Syrian War and America's terrorist proxy army. He also explains the very real danger of nuclear war with Russia fomented by Deep State actors within the US Government. Websites http://www.SenatorBlack.com https://twitter.com/SenRichardBlack About Senator Richard Black Republican Senator Dick Black represents the newly formed 13th District encompassing both parts of Loudoun and Prince Williams Counties. Formerly, Senator Black represented the 32nd District in Loudoun County, Virginia, for eight years in the House of Delegates. He enlisted in the Marines in 1963. By age 21, Black became a second lieutenant and was among the Marines' youngest aircraft carrier-qualified pilots. He flew 269 combat helicopter missions in Vietnam. Black also engaged in bitter ground combat with the 1st Marine Regiment. His radiomen were killed and he was wounded during an attack against enemy positions across the Hoi An River. Black served in small-unit actions where two fellow Marines--PFC Gary Martini and SSgt. Jimmie Howard--won the Medal of Honor. While in office, he was the only member of the Virginia General Assembly who held the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in battle. After the war, he served as a flight instructor and later attended engineer school. Black graduated second from engineer officers' class and was made a Company Commander. He deployed his 240-man unit to Vieques Island, Puerto Rico. There, Captain Black's Marines rebuilt the island runway. They operated a large rock quarry--drilling, blasting, crushing and trucking aggregate used to pave the airstrip. By then, Captain Black was 25 years old. Dick left the Marines to attend the University of Florida. There, he was twice elected to the Student Senate. He graduated with honors from the School of Business in 1973 and earned a law degree in 1976. He practiced law in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, before accepting a commission as a Major in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG). The Judge Advocate General of the Army appointed Dick to head the legal office at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. While there, he lobbied the Missouri legislature for legislation that curbed drunk driving. As an ex-officio member of the City Council for St. Robert, Missouri, Black led a major crackdown on vice that shut down eight houses of prostitution. He supervised 40 attorneys at Ft. Lewis, Washington. There, he executed one of the most complex federal land transactions in recent years. He negotiated and developed legislation protecting competing interests of state and federal agencies, environmental groups, ranchers, and the Yakima Indian Nation. His efforts preserved the hunting and fishing rights of the Indian people, and provided for the eventual return of the vast, 63,000-acre tract to them. In 1994, Colonel Dick Black retired from military service to become a partner in the law firm of Taylor, Horbaly, and Black. In addition to operating a successful law practice, Dick Black was a frequent media guest who appeared over 30 times on CNN and other national networks discussing foreign and military affairs. Black has been a member of the Law Enforcement Alliance of America, Virginia Society for Human Life, National Federation of Independent Business, Knights of Columbus, Izaak Walton League, NRA, VFW, American Legion, Military Officers Association, and Virginia Right to Life. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Virginia. He has held a Top Secret security clearance. His special interests include chemistry, herpetology, foreign and military affairs, construction engineering . . . and his nine grandchildren! Colonel Black was elected to the House of Delegates in February 1998. His awards include the Samuel Adams Award for Leadership in Government,
19 Apr 2017Jefferson Morley: How Mexican Presidents Became CIA Agents00:46:59
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlR-QeRJB4k Journalist and author Jefferson Morley explains how he helped declassify Operation LITEMPO which was the CIA program to co-opt Mexican presidents as paid CIA agents and what that covert relationship was like. He also reveals his prognosis for the Deep State under Donald Trump. Transcript Excerpt: Geopolitics & Empire Podcast: Something that really interests us is the connection between the CIA and Mexican politics which takes up a section of your book. You describe how three Mexican presidents were paid CIA agents under Win Scott's LITEMPO program. You reveal great stories, such as how Winston Scott, the Mexico City CIA chief had lunch every Sunday with President Adolfo Lopez Mateos who even became his padrino or godfather. Could you tell us how this came to be and what is the greater meaning of this? Jefferson Morley: The story about Win Scott and the Mexican presidents was actually the biggest news made by this book and it was big news in Mexico when the book was published, and there was a lot of coverage there. It was a very important story. Win Scott was trying to ingratiate himself and advance American interests in the sixties. And this was a very, revolutionary period, and what the CIA was worried about, Fidel Castro was very, very popular in Mexico. He was popular because he was a revolutionary. He was popular because he had taken on a dictator and won. He was popular because he was anti-American and there was lots of anti-American sentiment in Mexico, lots of nationalist feeling. So Fidel Castro was very popular and the CIA was very worried about this spreading, this nationalistic fervor, from Castro to Mexico itself. And at that time the PRI was the only party there was, it was not like it is today, it was a one-party state. Castro posed a threat to the Mexican system and Win Scott was trying to deter or defeat that threat and that's why he wanted to get the Mexican presidents on his side. They needed to do something otherwise all of Latin America was going to go communist, that's what they feared. So what he was trying to do was bring Mexico on their side and it was a very tricky job because no Mexican president could be openly pro-American, that was just not...Mexican national feeling was just not going to allow that. These kind of secret arrangements between the Mexican president became the way the Mexican presidents preferred to deal with it. And that was also the way in which Win Scott preferred to deal with it because he was a CIA man, he wanted to keep it all hush-hush. And Win Scott was very successful. People suspected it at the time, how influential the CIA was, but until my book came along nobody really knew for sure. He is the author of Our Man in Mexico, a biography of Winston Scott, CIA station chief in Mexico in the 1960s and Snow-Storm in August, the true story of what happened when the anti-slavery movement first came to Washington, D.C., during Andrew Jackson's presidency. Morley is the editor of JFK Facts. His Amazon Kindle ebook, CIA & JFK: The Last Assassination Secrets, will be published by the Future of Freedom Foundation in June. His biography of James Angleton will be published by St. Martin's Press next year. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)

In those days, trainees learned everything: from making the tea, to corporate finance, to evaluating and dealing in equities and bonds. They learned rapidly through experience about things as diverse as mining shares and general economics. It was excellent training, and within nine years he had risen to become senior partner of his firm. Subsequently, he held positions at director level in investment management, and worked as a mutual fund manager. Mr. Macleod also worked at a bank in Guernsey as an executive director. For most of his 40 years in the finance industry, he has been de-mystifying macro-economic events for his investing clients. The accumulation of this experience has convinced him that unsound monetary policies are the most destructive weapon governments use against the common man. Accordingly, his mission is to educate and inform the public in layman’s terms what governments do with money and how to protect themselves from the consequences. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)

Following his studies, he became a researcher testing nuclear submarine reactor units at the Alexandrov Scientific Institute. On the night of June 20, 1979, an explosion occurred inside the institute's nuclear submarine test tank, killing two workers. While analyzing the accident, Oleg learned of other whitewashed serious mishaps, including the nuclear meltdown of a submarine reactor some five years before – an accident turned state secret. Oleg tells us: "That is when I understood I need to use my knowledge not for military research, but to protect nature from the nuclear industry." Together with 1999 Nuclear-Free Future Award laureate Lydia Popova, Oleg is a founding member and, since Lydia's passing, chairperson of the GREEN WORLD Council. From 1998 to 2003, Bodrov was the moving spirit behind the Clean Baltic Coalition. In 2004, nominated by the environmental community, Oleg was named Russia's "Green Person of the Year." Since 2006, Bodrov has published a number of manuscripts and produced four documentary films on the technical and social aspects of decommissioning nuclear power plants, labors that have not only reshaped thinking at RosAtom (the State Corporation for Nuclear Energy in Russia), but sparked interest internationally among government authorities and concerned citizens beset by the same problem: what to do when the reactor's time has come? Bodrov has traveled with his PowerPoint presentations to Lithuania, Belarus, Germany, England, and the USA. From 1983 to 1989, Kinzer was the Times bureau chief in Nicaragua. In that post he covered war and upheaval in Central America. He also wrote two books about the region. One of them, co-authored with Stephen Schlesinger, is “Bitter Fruit: The Untold Story of the American Coup in Guatemala.” The other one, “Blood of Brothers: Life and War in Nicaragua,” is a social and political portrait that The New Yorker called “impressive for the refinement of its writing and also the breadth of its subject matter.” In 1988 Columbia University awarded Kinzer its Maria Moors Cabot prize for outstanding coverage of Latin America. From 1990 to 1996 Kinzer was posted in Germany. From his post as chief of the New York Times bureau in Berlin, he covered the emergence of post-Communist Europe, including wars in the former Yugoslavia. In 1996 Kinzer was named chief of the newly opened New York Times bureau in Istanbul, Turkey. He spent four years there, traveling widely in Turkey and in the new nations of Central Asia and the Caucasus. After completing this assignment, Kinzer published “Crescent and Star: Turkey Between Two Worlds.” He has also worked in Africa, and written “A Thousand Hills: Rwanda’s Rebirth and the Man Who Dreamed It.” Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa called this book “a fascinating account of a near-miracle unfolding before our very eyes.” Before joining the New York Times, Kinzer was Latin America correspondent for the Boston Globe. Doebbler was born in 1961 in Buffalo, New York, and has American, Palestinian, and Dutch nationality. He has made representations before the UN Human Rights Council and at numerous side-events of the Council calling for an impartial, fair and equal application of international human rights law and an end the selective punishment of human rights violators, especially by taking steps to end the impunity of powerful countries. He has advised governments, including the Palestinian National Authority and the Hamas government. He is currently Research Professor of Law at the University of Makeni, Department of Law in Sierra Leone and a visiting professor at Webster University in Geneva. Interview Transcript G & E Podcast:   Dr. Curtis Doebbler is an international human rights lawyer who has represented governments, heads of state, and millions of refugees or displaced persons. He is also a professor who researches and teaches at a number of universities. He's constantly traveling between the US, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. We've currently caught up to him at the UN in New York. It's great to have you on the podcast Dr. Doebbler. Dr. Doebbler:     Nice to speak with you. G & E Podcast:   The Middle East has been in crisis since time and memorial, but there seems to be a renewal of tensions given the Syrian war of intervention, the Israeli/Palestine crisis, and the latest temple mount incident, the Saudi sponsored war in Yemen, and now fallout between GCC countries and Qatar due to what some say is Qatar's pursuit of more independent policies and desire to work with Iran. For the first part of this interview, I wanted you, somebody with great authority on this subject and who has skin in the game so to speak, who's on the ground, to give an overview of what you consider to be the main sources of chaos in the Middle East, who's destroying the Middle East? Is it US/EU intervention, Russian meddling, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the struggle between  Wahhabism Sunni-Islam? What do you consider are the main driving forces behind the chaos and the human rights violations? Dr. Doebbler:     I think it's probably all of those that you've mentioned and maybe a few more. The Middle East, as many parts of the world, but particularly perhaps the Middle East because of it's geopolitical status over the last at least 100 years, perhaps the most complex geopolitical status of anywhere on the globe.

GEAB is at the origin of the concept of ‘global systemic crisis’ As early as February 15th, the second issue of the GlobalEurope Anticipation Bulletin (GEAB N°2 announced that an international political, economic and monetary crisis was to be triggered in the course of the last week of March 2006. The public announcement summing up this position toured the world, raising virulent criticisms of course, but above all warm thanks and vivid gratefulness for having opened a debate considered a healthy one. A tribute: three years before he died on July 2nd 2009, French prospectivist Pierre Gonod analyzed LEAP’s work of anticipation “LEAP has anticipated a “Global Systemic Crisis”, its calendar and its steps. I haven’t come across any such strong positioning in the microcosm of forward studies for a long time. A brave attitude contrasting with the profession’s current pusillanimity. Years ago already, French forward studies have given up on global anticipation. Why? Probably because of the growing complexity of the world that a simplistic way of thinking cannot grasp. Maybe also because our time is invaded by political correctness and has become unable to envisage radical breaks. LEAP must be praised for changing this…. From January 2006 to October 2012 the GEAB was edited and coordinated by Franck Biancheri, LEAP’s director of studies and strategies and creator of the political anticipation method. Since Franck Biancheri’s death, each issue is edited by Marie-Hélène Caillol and coordinated by Sylvain Périfel, using our research teams to the full. A skilled investigative reporter, Morley combines granular detail with storytelling verve to capture unknown realities of subjects as disparate as the Central Intelligence Agency and America’s legacy of racial violence. Morley’s newest book, The Ghost: The Secret Life of CIA Spymaster James Jesus Angleton, tells the story of a paranoid genius who was perhaps the most powerful unelected official in the U.S. government. At the height of the Cold War, Angleton’s secret influence extended from Moscow to London to Jerusalem to the Vatican, to the White House. If there is a “Deep State” in American life as some contend, Angleton was one of its Founding Fathers. The Ghost is a companion and sequel to Morley’s first book Our Man in Mexico, a biography of an improbable American spy. Winston Scott was an Alabama math teacher turned FBI agent who joined the CIA at its founding, became close friends with Angleton and became the chief of the agency’s Mexico City station in the 1960s. “Every decade or so a talented writer provides a genuinely new glimpse of the Central Intelligence Agency,” said historian Thomas Powers of the book. Morley’s second book, Snow-Storm in August, was described by best-selling author David Mariniss as “History so fresh it feels alive.” A vivid account of a white riot that swept the nation’s capital 25 years before the Civil War, Snow-Storm’s “plunge beneath the surface of history exposes realities more true to daily experience than executive proclamations or speeches in Congress,” said the Washington Post. The Minneapolis Star Tribune called it “elegant and readable.” Morley is one of the world’s most credible authorities on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He is editor of the blog, JFK Facts. He sued the CIA for certain records related to the Kennedy assassination in 2003. Fourteen years later, his lawsuit, Morley v. CIA is still active in federal court. Morley is married and lives in Washington D.C. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)

24 Mar 2018Edward Curtin: False Flag Operations Will Start New War00:36:12
Geopolitics & Empire · Edward Curtin: False Flag Operations Will Start New War #075 Professor of Sociology Edward Curtin discusses the attempts by the US, Britain, NATO and Israel to create false pretexts for an invasion of Syria and war with Russia. He discusses how the Deep State has concocted RussiaGate and how media and propaganda make it difficult to tell fact from fiction. Transcript G&E Podcast: We are speaking with Professor Edward Curtin, who teaches sociology at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. He has been writing on the precarious situation the world finds itself in, regarding the potential for a new world war emanating from the Middle East. Professor Curtin, you've been writing about the American Empire on your website edwardcurtin.com. Could you tell us a bit about where you're coming from, what prompted you to write on these issues and how you view the American empire? Edward Curtin: Thank you for having me. Yes, I'd be glad to tell you why I write on these things and what my motivation is. It goes back a long time to when I was actually in college, and after the next few years after college. I had the good fortune to have a wonderful college teacher by the name of Bill Frain, who introduced me to, actually one book I remember in particular, it was about a German, a peasant fellow, named Franz Jägerstätter, who defied Hitler and refused to serve in the armed forces in Germany, and was subsequently beheaded. He did this against the advice from his family, from the Catholic Church, from all the authorities. And it really inspired me. [spoiler] And then subsequently I was in the Marines and was introduced to father Daniel Berrigan, a famous anti-war priest who became a mentor to me. I became a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, and so since that time, I've been disturbed by the American empire, which has a long history, which goes back to the founding of this country and what they call manifest destiny, in which Native peoples were slaughtered and people were brought into slavery from Africa. And then over the years, I've been addressing these issues and the American empire has, of course subsequent to World War Two and the formation of the Central Intelligence Agency, taken on a new form and spread further around the world. And it seems to be everywhere these days, trying to conquer nations, instigate and start wars. And so I was very disturbed from a young age by all of this. And I suppose you could say it was my conscience that disturbed me. It has gotten me very mad and ashamed of this country. And so that is why I write about it. G&E Podcast: Did you start your blog not too long ago? Edward Curtin: Yes, I started the blog to post what I write, probably a couple of years ago, at the instigation of my daughter and son-in-law, because they felt that my writing should have one place for it. But I've been writing about these things for a long time. Many of my works were never published by the mainstream press because they were too critical of the establishment and this goes back many years. But with the introduction of the internet and many good alternative websites, my voice has gotten out there more. G&E Podcast: And one of the pieces that became recently very popular and was reposted around the internet and independent news sites and alternative media sites was The Wars to End All War, and in there you discuss how the U.S. and Israel are looking for pretext to start a proper war in Syria, which would spread into Lebanon, Iran and perhaps beyond. Most of America's wars have been based on lies. Some of the most famous are Vietnam's Gulf of Tonkin. Non-incidents, Iraq's non-existent WMDs. At this moment, Russia and Syria are being accused using chemical weapons, when we know they were, a few years ago, they were handed over to the West and gotten rid of, so there are none. We also know that the U.S. supported Jihadis in Syria are the actual culprits and the Russian military has ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJHMLAm3Ozo Former U.S. diplomat Jim Jatras discusses President Trump's rush to war in Syria, the false flag chemical attacks warned about by Russia, Putin's options in case of U.S. strikes, and the real geopolitical game being played in the Middle East which can lead to fatal escalation. Transcript G&E Podcast:                     We are speaking with analyst, former U.S. diplomat and foreign policy advisor to the Senate GOP leadership, Jim Jatras. We will be discussing the U.S.-Russia tango in Syria. Let's start with Russia. First it was U.S. election meddling, then Olympics sports doping, then the Russian media acting as foreign agent, and now this incredulous Salisbury nerve gas attack. What's next? Am I going to discover that my mother has actually been a KGB spy my entire life? Is there any truth at all to the neo-McCarthyism? Jim Jatras:                           Well, I think calling it neo-McCarthyism is unfair to Joe McCarthy, that back in his day there really were Stalinist agents at the State Department. Even if his methods went a bit overboard, there was a real concern. What we're seeing today is made out of whole cloth. I think this is simply part of a political campaign against Russia. The term "deep state" has gone from going virtually unknown to being totally overused, but I think there is a reality behind that concept. It's not just U.S. deep state. It's not just the CIA and NSA and FBI, the Department of Justice. It also includes our British friends, MI6, the GCHQ. I've been writing for months that there are British fingerprints all over the Steele dossier, all over the whole Russia-gate, FISA-gate thing. We see it, obviously, all over the Skripal case. [spoiler] Jim Jatras:                           It looks like that is coordinated with these latest accusations on the use of chemical weapons in Syria, which, unfortunately, looks like it will lead to military action as early as tonight Washington time. Where I am it's a little after 10:00 p.m., and the talk is now within a few hours we should be launching an attack against Syria. I had hoped that that would have been held off until the OPCW investigators, who are on their way to Damascus, would have had a chance to look at the evidence. Honestly, I think there are people in this town, and certainly in London and some other capitals, who don't want there to be an independent investigation, that do not want their handiwork being exposed. Jim Jatras:                           This has nothing to do, really, with chemical weapons at all, in my opinion. It has to do with the fact that at the end of the Cold War in 1991 the United States emerged as the sole Superpower, unipolar moment and all that. There are people who are willing to risk plunging the world into a third world war to preserve that global hegemony against a Russia that's reasserting its own national interests, and, of course, also China. G&E Podcast:                     Let's just backtrack a bit. You are a former diplomat. Can you tell us about the significance of the recent, unprecedented, expulsion of Russian diplomats from the U.S. and the E.U.? I don't think this even happened during the first Cold War. It's quite startling. As you mentioned, it's fabricated chemical attacks with the neo-McCarthyism, and now this expulsion. If we put that all together what does this mean? Jim Jatras:                           I think what we're seeing is the kind of demonization against a target country, and especially its leader, personally, in this case Vladimir Putin, that we've see so many times in the past, whether it was Milošević in Yugoslavia, or Saddam Hussein, or Muammar Gaddafi. Everybody is Hitler. We call it "The Hitler of the month club", is that we frame the target as this horrible, evil person who must be destroyed. Animal Assad now, President Trump is calling him. That means that the rules of normal conduct are suspended because,

Isa Blumi researches societies in the throes of social, economic, and political transformation. His latest work covers the late Ottoman period and successor regimes, arguing that these events are part of process that interlinks the Balkans, the Middle East, and the larger Islamic world. In this respect, it is key to explore in a comparative, integrated manner how post-Ottoman Turkey fits into what is a global story of transition. As he expands his work to include more of the 20th century, Blumi explores processes of change induced by Muslim refugees who ended up settling throughout the world. Exploring these refugees' stories through this global perspective helps question how we understand identity and social organization, themes Blumi will focus on in the courses he will teach. Beyond his historical research, Blumi also regularly writes, and lectures on contemporary Balkan and Middle Eastern politics (especially Kosovo, Turkey and Yemen) and political Islam. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)

LaRouche, Jr., statesman and economist, who, with his wife, is a true citizen of the world, in Schiller's sense. In her Founding Message for the American Schiller Institute, in 1984, Chairman Helga Zepp LaRouche outlined the Institute's objectives as follows: "The clock of mankind has advanced to a point where the old lackluster ways will no longer work. According to all established criteria, mankind has gambled away all its chances for survival. Too many catastrophes are crowding in upon us, the entropic process has proceeded too far and the rift between the U.S.A. and Western Europe is all but accomplished. For precisely this reason, we are founding the Schiller Institute. We do so not only because there is a vacuum we need to fill with institutions willing to revive the spirit of the American Revolution and the German classical period. We are founding the Schiller Institute because Schiller's special method of approaching world-historical problems is the only one which can still bring about a solution today. The kernel of this method can be defined in Schiller's own words: Man is greater than his fate. Even if the objective situation looks almost hopeless and desperate, we, like Schiller, are sure that a courageous spirit and human reason will always be able to find the higher level where the problems are solvable...."The Schiller Institute will work for this perspective. You, dear citizens of America, are called upon to help in this process. We can win, but. as Schiller stated, 'world history is the world's court of justice!''' *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)
10 Dec 2018Dmitry Orlov: How the Technosphere Threatens the Biosphere and our Freedoms00:52:41
Geopolitics & Empire · Dmitry Orlov: How the Technosphere Threatens the Biosphere and our Freedoms #088 Dmitry Orlov rejoins us to discuss his book on the technosphere and how it threatens the environment or biosphere, limits our economic freedoms, and can become weaponized as a political technology. He gives some recommendations on ways to mitigate against the overarching influence of the technosphere. Transcript Podcast: Returning to the Geopolitics and Empire Podcast is author Dmitry Orlov. We'll be discussing his book, Shrinking the Technosphere: Getting a Grip on Technologies that Limit our Autonomy, Self-sufficiency, and Freedom, which touches on ways technology or this thing known as technosphere limits our economic and political freedoms as well as threatens the biosphere and environment. I'd also like to remind listeners to subscribe to all of our social media and weekly newsletter, all of which can be found at geopoliticsandempire.com, and thank the few of you who have left a tip via Patreon, PayPal, or Bitcoin, and ask new listeners for continued support because it does cost a considerable amount of time, energy, and money to produce this podcast. Without further ado, thanks for coming back on, Dmitry. [spoiler] Dmitry Orlov: Thank you for inviting me. Glad to discuss this topic. Podcast: Yeah, and I purchased this book from you a year ago, and only got around to reading it recently. You put to paper succinctly a lot of thoughts I've had on this subject of the technosphere, but let's start with what is the technosphere. The term, for me, evokes different themes, such as the technocracy, the 1930s scientific dictatorship movement, which I suppose is still alive today in some form. Some people talk about the term globalism, an elite who wield technology to tighten their grip on power, perhaps private corporations who wield greater power than states, such as Silicon Valley, who, at this moment, are purging any anti-establishment voices from their online platforms. It also, the technosphere reminds me of the Belgian utopian Paul Otlet who wanted to classify the world and create some sort of world city, as well as it evokes images of science fiction dystopian literature in film, such as The Matrix. Could you tell us what is the technosphere? Dmitry Orlov: Well, what got me thinking about it initially was this thought that there are systems that human being evolve at various points that are not necessarily in their individual or group interest and that these systems behave as emergent intelligences and as agents independent of the human will, that they manipulate people as opposed to people controlling them.Probably, the first one is agriculture. It made people sicker. It bound them to the earth. It made them unable to move around as they have before, but it increased population density and allowed more powerful systems of control to develop. It gave rise to empires, whereas before, we had basically bands and tribes. That took over. Then, later on, we had the development of the financial realm and money lending, which was only made possible by agriculture and by the accumulation of harvests, of harvested wealth. Eventually, this way of handling wealth involving money and debt took over and grew out of control, so that money became this necessary evil that people required to keep people at bay. Then later on, with industrialization and especially with the development of fossil fuels, we had the full development of the technosphere, which is now a realm onto its own, an emergent intelligence that we have no chance outside of that we must allow to take priority over our own interests, even if our basic interest is just elemental survival in terms of not destroying the biosphere or what's left of the biosphere. Podcast: Just, again, to clarify that note on your definition of the technosphere. It's not any sentient being, but I suppose it can be wielded by political elites? Dmitry Orlov: Yes, well,

I was surprised to discover the same U.S. State Department, National Endowment for Democracy NED, Soros' Open Society formula at play there that you detail in your book, Manifest Destiny. After the Soviet Union FELL, sure enough, James Baker paid a visit to Ulan Bator, Mongolia, the capital. The young Mongolian named Elbegdorj who was educated in the U.S. at Harvard, just like Saakashvili, the former leader of Georgia. Elbegdorj founded a liberty center, which Saakash really did as well in Georgia with the same name. They were both funded by Soros, NED, USAID. I documented that about Mongolia and interesting that Elbegdorj eventually became the president in 2009. In your book, Manifest Destiny, you basically look at how Washington has systematically attempted to take over nation after nation including Poland, Yugoslavia, Russia, China, Georgia, Ukraine. Could you, for listeners, describe this basic framework or template that Washington uses to take down foreign governments in a way that makes it look like Washington had nothing to do with it. [spoiler] William Engdahl:              What happened in the 1980s, there was a whole series of congressional investigations, exposés, whistle blowers, et cetera, about the illegal activities of the CIA. Assassinations of people like Pinochet in Chile, the coup d'état against Mosaddegh in Iran, in Guatemala, Árbenz and so forth. As damage control, Reagan's head of CIA, and Will Casey, proposed a privatization of this regime change machine instead of using CIA agents on the street in civilian clothes who can be discovered and then revealed as a government operation. He said, "Let's do it through private NGOs, non-governmental organizations," and then if they're caught in some attempt in some country, we can always say, "Oh, that's private. We can't control what private foundations do. They want human rights, liberty, democracy." You allow them to work in your country. We have no ... Et cetera. That was actually at the beginning of brilliant and very effective way to get rid of regimes that Washington didn't like. This was ruled out in one of the earliest experiments in Poland with the help of the Pope, John Paul II, who had a secret meeting with President Reagan and worked out an agreement where the pope would be informed of the CIA's activities in Poland with Solidarnosc, the trade union movement and then would appear in Poland, in the streets, and give support to the fight for liberty and freedom. Of course, ultimately led to the topelling of the communist government. Then, one by one, the communist countries in the east block,

28 Dec 2018Elijah J. Magnier: The War in Syria is Over, What Happens Next?00:33:39
Geopolitics & Empire · Elijah J. Magnier: The War in Syria is Over, What Happens Next? #092 Senior Political Risk Analyst Elijah J. Magnier discusses the end of the war in Syria and what follows as the U.S. pulls out, Syria is reintegrated into the Arab League, Russia helps consolidate Syrian sovereignty, the Kurds are left to fend for themselves, and Turkey and Israel ponder on how to move forward. Transcript Podcast: On this edition of Geopolitics and Empire, we interview senior political risk analyst, Elijah Magnier, who has over 30 years of experience and in depth knowledge of the Middle East. We'll be looking at the developments in Syria, and examine whether the war is really over. Why don't we start with President Trump's announcement of US withdrawal? Podcast: This is confusing, because we know the US has had a long term plan of regime change in Syria, and just a week or two ago, an article was published describing how US forces would remain indefinitely in Syria, and then we hear Trump say that US forces are pulling out. His claim that the US has defeated ISIS is kind of silly, because in reality, it's been Syria, Russia, and Iran who were largely responsible for defeating a US sponsored ISIS, but Trump's comment is a face saving measure perhaps before a naïve US populace. Podcast: Some people remain skeptical as to the US pulling out, what is your assessment? [spoiler] Elijah Magnier: Yes, hi, I think from what we have seen today, and what we have seen in the last couple of weeks, it seems Trump is serious about pulling out his troops from Syria, particularly in the area that his forces are occupying in the Northeast of Syria, and that is [inaudible 00:01:27] province, and [inaudible 00:01:28], and part of [inaudible 00:01:30]. Elijah Magnier: The reaction of his defense secretary, the reaction of other diplomats like Brett McGurk, who resigned from the US establishment, was a good indication that Trump wants to go ahead and pull out of Syria. Moreover, the reaction of Turkey that was insisting on disarming the YPG Kurds that are the PKK version, Syria PKK version, that also confirm one thing, that the US can no longer protect the Kurds, and can no longer stay in that part of the country. Elijah Magnier: Today, we saw the Syrian forces deploying two small divisions in Manbij, and particularly in an area around Arima that's a village west of Manbij that they Syrian and the Russian use to maintain an observation location in the area for over a year, and they pull out from this 20 location in the area, like Arima, Arab Hassan Kabir, [inaudible 00:02:54], Al Furat, Dandaniya, and all these villages. Elijah Magnier: They pull out, and they pull out when Turkey attack Afrin, and they returned only three days ago, but before they have reached an agreement with the Kurds yesterday evening, late around midnight, so they have decided to send two small divisions in the city of Manbij, and the Kurds, YPG, announce their withdrawal from the city, although the Americans are still there, but the Americans can do nothing without the Kurds, because they have used the Kurds as a human shield to protect them, and the presence of 2,000, or 2,000 or a little bit more than 2,000 American troops are not enough to protect the Americans in an area that is more or less 50,000 square meters. That is more or less a third of Syria, which is exactly between 23 to 24% of the geographic Syria. Elijah Magnier: Therefore, they need the Kurds, and if they Kurds pulled out of Manbij, there are no other forces that can protect the Americans, so, yes, my answer is Trump seems serious, now the Syrian army moved in, they put the Russian and the Syrian flag on all the position, they are regaining control of to give a strong indication to the Americans and to Turkey that now Russia is involved, and no other force will regain the force of the Syrian territory but the Syrian army. Podcast: We're seeing other promising signs,

We talk about the problems with the establishment or mainstream media and what he calls the "Many Stream" or alternative and independent media. We also discuss the general sentiment in Europe given the political and economic crisis. *Support/Donate to Geopolitics & Empire: Patreon https://www.patreon.com/empiregeopolitics PayPal https://www.paypal.me/geopolitics Bitcoin http://geopoliticsandempire.com/bitcoin-donate Websites https://potkaars.nl/indexenglish https://www.twitter.com/ricobrouwer https://www.twitter.com/potkaars About Rico Brouwer and Potkaars Potkaars in Dutch literally means ‘pot with candle’, phonetically it’s podcasts, they shed light. We make them and look for yours. Potkaars was started in september 2018 by Rico Brouwer and Saskia Söller. Der Spiegel in 2015 offered her apologies after having published Bellingcat's lies. In 2018 they sue their own journalist Claas Relotius (CNN journalist of the year in 2014), after it became apparent that he had made up stories. In the Netherlands, the Dutch Broadcasting Foundation (NOS) as public broadcaster has been given the task of providing coverage through our national media outlets. The NOS has been given her own black-book in which their mistakes made, are documented. Former Minister Opstelten of Dutch political party VVD said 'a minister does not lie'. But he himself in 2015 resigned after it became known he had misinformed our House of Representatives. If you want real news, you have to be willing to cut through the smoke -smokes & mirrors- to get to information, and demand a controllable government. Putting information away as 'fake news' is easy. But what do you replace it with? Potkaars tells the story of people who 'have started doing things that matter'. What is wrong, how can it be done better and what do you do to achieve that? Potkaars are podcasts that shed light. We make them and look for yours. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)
11 Mar 2019Yves Engler: Canadian Imperialism & Foreign Policy in Venezuela & Beyond00:50:54
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XBu-EidDrI Canadian author Yves Engler discusses how Canadian foreign policy is an extension of US foreign policy, how the myth and image of Canada as a benevolent nation is destroyed by its violent regime change of Haiti in 2006 and current involvement in the Venezuelan coup, as well as its role subservient to Washington and its wars of the 20th century. *Support/Donate to Geopolitics & Empire: Patreon https://www.patreon.com/empiregeopolitics PayPal https://www.paypal.me/geopolitics Bitcoin http://geopoliticsandempire.com/bitcoin-donate Show Notes Canadian ‘aid’ to Venezuela part of plan to overthrow government https://yvesengler.com/2019/02/23/canadian-aid-to-venezuela-part-of-plan-to-overthrow-government The United States in Canadian Foreign Policy https://www.international.gc.ca/odskelton/gotlieb.aspx?lang=eng Canadian Amb. He has  published ten books: Left, Right — Marching to the Beat of Imperial Canada; A Propaganda System—How Canada’s Government, Corporations, Media and Academia Sell War and Exploitation, Canada in Africa — 300 Years of Aid and Exploitation, The Ugly Canadian — Stephen Harper’s Foreign Policy, Lester Pearson’s Peacekeeping — The Truth May Hurt, Stop Signs — Cars and Capitalism on the Road to Economic, Social and Ecological Decay (with Bianca Mugyenyi), The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy (Shortlisted for the Mavis Gallant Prize for Non Fiction in the Quebec Writers’ Federation Literary Awards), Playing Left Wing: From Rink Rat to Student Radical and (with Anthony Fenton) Canada in Haiti: Waging War on The Poor Majority and Canada and Israel: Building Apartheid. Yves was born in Vancouver, where he grew up playing hockey. He was a peewee teammate of NHL star Mike Ribeiro at Huron Hochelaga in Montréal before playing in the B.C. Junior League. After being suspended from Concordia University, he turned to research and writing, but he’s still a fan of the great Canadian sport. To contact Yves email Yvesengler(at)hotmail.com Yves first became active in Canadian foreign policy issues in the early 2000s. Initially focused on anti-corporate globalization organizing, the year he was an elected vice president of the Concordia Student Union Benjamin Netanyahu was blocked from speaking at the university. The protests sparked a massive backlash against student activism on campus. Later in the school year the US invaded Iraq. In the lead-up to the war Yves helped mobilize students to attend a number of massive antiwar demonstrations and co-founded a small collective called Block the Empire, which organized an early morning blockade of the US consulate in Montréal. Later Block the Empire organized a number of events targeting arms manufacturers, including a tour of Montréal’s weapons industry. While these efforts challenged Canadian foreign policy, it was only after Ottawa helped overthrow the democratically elected Haitian government in 2004 that Yves began to seriously question Canada’s peacekeeper self-image. As he learned about Canada’s contribution to violent, anti-democratic policies in Haiti Yves began to directly challenge this country’s foreign policy. Over the next three years he traveled to Haiti and helped organize dozens of marches, talks, actions, press conferences, etc. critical of Canada’s role in the country. Yves also co-authored Canada in Haiti: Waging War Against the Poor Majority and helped establish the Canada Haiti Action Network.
21 Mar 2019Peter Ford: The “Permanent Government” Imperial War on Syria & World00:32:22
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ph44p4SMWBQ Retired British Ambassador to Bahrain and Syria Peter Ford discusses the Syrian War and its latest developments, including attempts to try Bashar al-Assad at the ICC. He describes the "permanent government" of the U.S. which is a key driver of the war, as well as America's European counterparts such as France and Britain, who still cling to the coattails of their imperial past glory. Ambassador Ford believes Gulf unity is shattered and that Syria will remain weak, but will slowly rebuild in the coming years. *Support/Donate to Geopolitics & Empire: Patreon https://www.patreon.com/empiregeopolitics PayPal https://www.paypal.me/geopolitics Bitcoin http://geopoliticsandempire.com/bitcoin-donate Transcript Podcast: This is the Geopolitics and Empire podcast, and we're talking to retired British diplomat and ambassador to Bahrain and Syria, Peter Ford. He is also the Director of the British Syrian Society. We will be discussing the war in Syria, the US and European foreign policy of regime change, the media propaganda that enables it, and what we can expect to see in the future. Podcast: It's great to have you on, Ambassador Ford. Peter Ford: Thank you for having me, I look forward to our dialogue. [spoiler] Podcast: Yes. And let's get started with the different narratives that exist of the Syrian War. Because the prominent narrative is that it's a civil war, but you recently gave a speech in the House of Lords, which you sent me a copy, and you explained that in effect, the war is part of a multi-decade long war on Syria by the West. We know we have declassified files that go back to 1957, I believe, where the CIA had the plan to overthrow Syria. I believe in 1983, in the 80s there were other documents, and Wikileaks in the 2000s as well released such documents. Podcast: So can you give us a frank explanation of what really the Syrian War was, or is, all about? Peter Ford: Well, you'll recall in 2011, when everything kicked off in Syria, there had been a genuine popular uprising in some other Arab countries, beginning with Tunisia, and across North Africa, spreading through Libya and Egypt. And to a large extent, I believe those were genuine domestic uprisings. The case of Syria was always going to be different. While those countries in North Africa, the sectarian issue hardly applied, because the people were almost all Sunni Muslim. Syria is a social and religious mosaic. It was always likely that in the event of any uprising with religious factors, social factors would come into play. Peter Ford: So Syria was always destined to be different. It was also destined to be different because the West, particularly the United States, has had this anti-Syrian agenda going back several decades, and has been constantly looking for opportunities to destabilize Syria and remove the Damascus regime, as they would call it. And such an opportunity arose in 2011, and the Western powers lost no time in piling in on the back of some limited local demonstrations, particularly in southern Syria, in Daraa, and in no time, for example, the US Ambassador was marching up with his French colleague to Hama to participate themselves in demonstrations there. Peter Ford: So the die was cast from a very early stage, and what may have begun as local demonstrations quickly escalated. Islamist fighters began to appear. Very quickly they were armed by the United States, and other powers, particularly Gulf powers acting in cooperation with America. And in a very short time indeed, the conflict had become essentially another episode in the West's war against Syria. Podcast: Since you brought up some of these fighters, these proxy fighters, I'm gonna jump ahead to one of my questions. Tell us a little bit of how this war was fought, so, you know, some people say they're proxy fighters, mercenaries, these moderate rebels, jihadists. We have declassified documents that say the US knew wha...

He is co-founder and director of Democracy Without Borders and coordinator of the international Campaign for a UN Parliamentary Assembly. He frequently writes and speaks about global democracy. His book “A World Parliament: Governance and Democracy in the 21st Century” which was published in 2018 (with Jo Leinen) provides a comprehensive overview. Andreas Bummel is a member of the Congress of the World Federalist Movement-Institute for Global Policy in New York. UN Parliamentary Assembly Campaign The Campaign for a UN Parliamentary Assembly is a global network that advocates democratic representation of the world’s citizens at the UN and the institutions of global governance. Supporters of the campaign include current and former parliamentarians and officials, representatives of civil society organizations, researchers, and dedicated citizens. The campaign’s mandate is based on the international appeal for the establishment of a parliamentary assembly at the UN that was published in 2007 and on subsequent declarations. Five international meetings on a UNPA have taken place so far. The campaign’s international action and strategy is coordinated by a secretariat that is hosted by Democracy Without Borders. The secretariat works closely with the campaign’s steering committee, the co-chairs of the campaign’s advisory group, and partner organizations such as the World Federalist Movement based in New York and The Hague. The overall goal of the campaign is to mobilize government support for the establishment of a UNPA. While the campaign approaches governments, it simultaneously seeks to establish parliamentary support. Democracy Without Borders Democracy Without Borders supports global democracy and a holistic approach to democracy promotion that spans from the local to the global levels and at the same time embraces the dimensions of representation, participation, deliberation and co-decision. Democracy Without Borders strives for a democratic world order in which citizens participate beyond national boundaries in shaping policy that serves their joint long-term interests. Such an order needs to be based on an equal world citizenship of all citizens as well as on the principles of federalism, subsidiarity, the separation of powers, the rule of law, fundamental human rights, and the protection of minorities. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra V...
23 May 2019Oswaldo Zavala: Cartels Don’t Exist & How Narcos Are Subordinate to the U.S. & Mexican State01:14:30
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oK0it5GZcaM Dr. Oswaldo Zavala discusses his book "The Cartels Don't Exist" in which he examines the questionable narrative that the Mexican drug cartels are in control of the government. In fact, he points to evidence that it is the U.S. and Mexican security state apparatus managing the drug cartels. He deconstructs how the state's false narrative of being the victim of the cartels then is reproduced by mass media, ambitious but naive journalists, film (e.g. Netflix's Narcos, Sicario, Infierno), popular literature, telenovelas and soap operas. *Support/Donate to Geopolitics & Empire: Patreon https://www.patreon.com/empiregeopolitics PayPal https://www.paypal.me/geopolitics Bitcoin http://geopoliticsandempire.com/bitcoin-donate Websites https://twitter.com/Oswaldo__Zavala https://www.gc.cuny.edu/Page-Elements/Academics-Research-Centers-Initiatives/Doctoral-Programs/Latin-American,-Iberian,-and-Latino-Cultures/Profiles/Oswaldo-Zavala https://www.proceso.com.mx/585253/el-fascismo-inimaginable-la-casa-blanca-en-las-series-de-television-en-la-era-de-trump Book https://www.amazon.com/Los-c%C3%A1rteles-existen-Narcotr%C3%A1fico-cultura-ebook/dp/B079LFYPYL/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=oswaldo+zavala&link_code=qs&qid=1558631354&s=gateway&sourceid=Mozilla-search&sr=8-1-fkmrnull About the Guest Oswaldo Zavala (Ciudad Juárez, 1975) is Professor of contemporary Latin American literature and culture with a joint appointment at the College of Staten Island and at The Graduate Center, both institutions part of the City University of New York (CUNY). In 2009 he was on the election list for European elections for the list Newropeans: the first Trans European Party. Dankers graduated in physics and philosophy, both at the University of Amsterdam. The Gefira Bulletin is intended for investors. The analyses that we make and the trends that we predict deal primarily with economic and financial matters related to geopolitical events. The bulletin appears ten times a year at an annual price of 225 euros/250 dollars. We are also developing the Gefira website, accessible to users worldwide, where we explore political, social and demographic topics. The Gefira Team do not shy away from controversial issues and do not let themselves be dictated to by political correctness. We are doing our best to follow the truth wherever it leads. Demographics, trade, finance, and modern history are among our most discussed problems. In the Gefira Bulletin we cover such subjects as: Demographics The profound demographic changes have an impact on economy at large. The European nations, once the world’s dominant driving force, are now in a steady numerical decline. It is not only the ageing of the population that Europe is struggling with, but also, with a fertility of 1.5, the extinction of the indigenous peoples. Demographic growth is coupled with economic growth, which in turn increases the value of financial assets while the current demographic decline will have the opposite effect. Investors are not only passive actors, but some also take matters in their hand promoting legal as well as illegal migration to maximise their profit and increase their influence. Trade The trade imbalance between major economies has led to many crises, and many others, such as currency, trade, cyber and eventually real wars, will follow. Germany, China, and Japan are running a structural trade balance surplus, while the USA, Turkey and UK have structurally unsustainable trade deficits. In the Gefira we are keeping track on the world’s trade policies and how they create winners and losers. Central Banks and central bank policies Central Banks are the financial centres of states and their bankers prove to be better able to create economic growth than free markets. Yet, with the current Central Banking policy came cheap credit and with cheap credit came financial bubbles. The central banks, taking decisions who gets the loans i.e. who will blossom or go bust, are pulling the strings of the economy or are the hidden hand behind the seemingly free markets. . In the Gefira we are trying to find out which sector and which companies profit from central bank policies. Currencies The euro is in a deep crisis. The Treaty of Lisbon prevents the bail-out of Greece. In the absence of fundamental political reforms, the currency will not survive another ten years. The dollar is still the world’s largest reserve currency, giving the US its dominant position. Not only are the euro, yuan and gold a rival to the dollar: so are digital systems. We have entered the digital era,

He believes the retreat of U.S. Empire is accelerating under the Trump administration due to inherent internal problems such as a declining economy (e.g. crumbling infrastructure, deteriorating quality of education), social inequality, and a consequent growth of anti-exceptionalism and anti-militarism among its own citizenry. *Support/Donate to Geopolitics & Empire: Patreon https://www.patreon.com/empiregeopolitics PayPal https://www.paypal.me/geopolitics Bitcoin http://geopoliticsandempire.com/bitcoin-donate Websites https://www.chathamhouse.org/expert/professor-victor-bulmer-thomas-cmg-obe Books https://www.amazon.com/Empire-Retreat-Present-Future-United/dp/0300210000/ref=sr_1_2?qid=1573298491&refinements=p_27%3AVictor+Bulmer-Thomas&s=books&sr=1-2&text=Victor+Bulmer-Thomas About the Guest Victor Bulmer-Thomas is Associate Fellow in the US and the Americas Programme at Chatham House, Honorary Professor at the Institute of the Americas, University College London and Emeritus Professor of Economics at London University. I’ve been covering Latin America since 2001 for news media including Time Magazine, CNN, Reuters, The Houston Chronicle, The Associated Press, GlobalPost, France 24, CBC, The Sunday Telegraph, Letras Libres and many others. My work has also appeared in The New York Times, BBC and Guardian. I am author of the books Gangster Warlords: Drug Dollars, Killing Fields and the New Politics of Latin America (released 2016) and El Narco: Inside Mexico’s Criminal Insurgency (released 2011). I started covering drug cartels from my early days here. I was always fascinated by the riddle of these ghost like figures who made $30 billion a year, were idolized in popular songs and miraculously escaped the Mexican army and DEA. Over the decade I followed the mystery to endless murder scenes on bullet-ridden streets, mountains where drugs are born as pretty flowers, and scarred criminals from prison cells to luxury condos. During the same time, Mexico’s drug war morphed into a horrific conflict with brutal beheadings, massacres and mass graves. Journalists here found ourselves reporting on a human tragedy of epic proportions – with a never-ending trail of grieving parents and atrocities comparable to brutal civil wars. The need for better understanding to help find a way out of this hole has become more important than ever. We foreign journalists all have to turn to our homelands for part of that solution. I grew up in sunny England, near the seaside city of Brighton – famous for its pink candy, pebble beaches, colleges and bubbling night clubs. It is also one of Britain’s top places for drug consumption, switching with the fashions from Moroccan hashish to Turkish heroin to Colombian cocaine. Few there ever think about where the mind-bending substances come from or what they might give or takeaway from those countries. In Europe and the United States a hard discussion on our drug habits and policy is long overdue. As well as following drug trafficking empires, I cover the other major issues of Latin America such as natural disasters (including the Haiti earthquake), the battle between left and right (including the Honduras coup), and the vast human wave of emigration to El Norte. I was a consultant for the International Crisis Group for its first two reports on Mexico. I also love music and cover it whenever I get a chance. I co-directed a series of three short films with John Dickie, which all include a good dose of Latin American hip hop. They are Barrios Beats and Blood, Bajamar Ballad, and The Gangsters’ Granny. *Podcast intro music is from the song "The Queens Jig" by "Musicke & Mirth" from their album "Music for Two Lyra Viols": http://musicke-mirth.de/en/recordings.html (available on iTunes or Amazon)
