20 May 2020Pushing Our Buttons - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:39:43

Hey, what's the deal with these Playstation Controller buttons? Well, I'm glad you asked, anonymous stranger! This episode of the Geeks & Gaijins Podcast introduces us to the peculiar history behind Playstation's iconic symbols, the differences between Japanese and American consoles, and why the X button is so gosh-danged confusing.

Also in this episode, Jon presents a range of news stories from the Japanese entertainment industry, including Golgo, the longest-running manga, Studio Ghibli's new Totoro video, and Japanese period dramas.

Also, the boys get way to invested in some curiously-named biscuits. Maybe quarantine really is getting to them after all. Or maybe they're just British. Who can be sure?

22 Jan 2020[Classic] Byleth Splits The Community! - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:48:53

A new challenger has been revealled for Smash Bros. Ultimate, but all is not well in Smashville. The announcement that the latest DLC fighter will be another character from the Fire Emblem series has been met with a heavy amount of backlash. Players are tense, emotions are high, and the community is in turmoil. So obviously the best thing to do would be to get stuck right into the middle of it all!

Should Smash not be your cup of tea, this episode also includes more student and gacha-related stories from Japan with Jon, and a brief review of Carole & Tuesday from Tom!

01 Apr 2020Within ARMS reach - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:48:58

Much ado about not much, really

Corona Virus has everyone locked indoors across the globe, and as such we're all a little short on news to discuss. The beginning of the episode features a short update on Japan's ongoing response to Covid-19, for you to enjoy or skip at your leisure.

Fortunately, the guys are not without any news for this podcast, thanks in part to a surprise mini-direct from Nintendo. As such, this episode will heavily feature Tom ranting and wildly speculating about Super Smash Bros. Fighter Pass 2, whilst Jon reluctantly attempts to follow along and keep the conversation accessible for you, dear listener.

Strap yourselves into whatever furniture has temporarily become your home, this will be a wild one.

08 Apr 2020MultiMasking - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:36:48

The world's still sick, but Japan apparently missed the memo. Only now have the government started taking precautions to help shelter their population from Covid 19, with a revolutionary new iniative: handing out two face masks to each family. That's right, two masks. Per family.

Genius.

Once again, Jon takes us on a journey through Japan's mask culture as it slowly adapts to the new pandemic. We've got reusuable masks, we've got DIY Masks, we've got mask spray, but the one thing we definitely don't have is Corona Virus...

At least, as far as we can tell, Japan's not really testing people. Yay!

Also in this podcast: Japanese Memes, Pucca Snacks, and a Tom's First Impressions of the Spring Season of Anime. Find out what shows you should be looking forward to to help you get through the quarantine. You probably have the time.

25 Mar 2021Olympic Shames - This Week In Japan00:39:19

Here we go again...

This Week In Japan, we celebrate the opening of Super Nintendo World, Disaster Survival Dogs, Train Phones, and a victory for LGBT rights.

We do not celebrate another high-profile figure planning the Olympics saying something dumb and sexist. Like, have you guys considered just not?

Just take the whole thing around the back of the barn, already.

01 Jul 2021Pikachu Used Fly! - This Week In Japan00:43:20

Fly me to the Pokemon Sun & Moon.

This Week In Japan, you can: fly via Pikachu Airlines (if you're vaccinated), break into a school (if someone else has already broken in), steal toilet paper (if you're the police chief), silence political criticism (if you're Twitter), or not say anything about the Olympics (if you're the Emperor). Sadly, neither Jon or Tom are the Emperor (yet), so they are not allowed to not say anything about the Olympics.

06 May 2020No Fun In Crowdfunding - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:34:38

Geeks & Gaijins takes on the free market! Twin Engine's recent crowdfunding campaign for Kurayukaba has sparked interest from our holed-up hosts, and so Jon and Tom will be providing a lesson on the brief yet messy history of trying to fund anime production through the public. Join us as we delve into this new avenue of anime production, and discover the fun benefits and devastating drawbacks of bucking the mainstream.

For those looking for a more positive story to fill their isolated hours, we do not have that here. Are vikings okay instead? If you're looking for a big story to keep you busy for.... reasons, and aren't opposed to a little bloodshed and misery along the way, then Jon has an anime recommendation for you!

It's Vinland Saga. There's really not all that many anime about vikings to choose from, surprisingly.

Last but not least, the boys dip their toes into the growing Vtuber industry, as the both attempt to understand what exactly is Kizuna AI.

10 Jun 2020Toilet Troubles and Tax Tricksters - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:52:39

Our good friend Jardo is back this week, and brings with him a tantalising tale of toiletry terror. Learn all about Japanese.... toilet... culture.... Wait, what?

Yeah, I'm just as lost as you are folks.

Uh, so if that's not your thing for... perfectly understandable reasons, we also have Jon's taste-test supreme of Japan's Big Three Convenience Stores: 7/11, Family Mart, and Lawson. Who will come out on top as Emperor of the lunch deal? Tune in to find out.

For those looking to learn more about the anime industry, our final segment of the podcast is about anime studio Ufotable being charged with evading tax on its.... cafes?

Stay weird, Japan.

18 Mar 2020New Horizons - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:35:27

Welcome to... whatever this is.

More and more people might be staying indoors due to Covid 19, but that's no concern for Jon! This week marks the launch of the latest release in the Animal Crossing Franchise: New Horizons, and he couldn't be happier. Truly there is nothing he enjoys more than escaping from reality for a few hours of indulging in his greatest fantasies: paying off a mortgage, maintaining a tidy garden, and having a handful of friends he talks to every day.

Also in this episode, the boys discuss the Japanese festival of Higan, and the recent auctioning of a unique Nintendo Playstation prototype. There is also much rambling and British nonsense along the way.

17 Mar 2021TaCatshi's Castle - This Week In Japan00:44:02

The day I stop making cat puns is the day I die.

Anyway, this week we check in with our favourite baby Panda, Japan's Ainu population, government workers bus schedules, and the noble house cat (or is that castle cat?). Oh also the second coming of Christ has arrived, but it's less fire-and-brimstone, and more fur-and-branches.

Basically, congratulations to Monty Python's Life of Brian for being the most accurate religion.

As panic sweeps the nation, one man steps forth to restore peace and order to the troubled island of Japan. His name is Shinzo Abe, and he's royally ****ed up.

Corona Virus is still the topic of the week, as the Prime Minister's decision to close all the schools across Japan sends the entire country's education system - Jon included - into a confused and frustrated frenzy. Our long-suffering host brings the latest developments on the situation.

Tom has had a much more enjoyable week, having gone to see the latest My Hero Academia Movie: Heroes Rising. You can hear his review of watching the film in cinemas in the latter part of this pocast.

Demon Slayer fever isn't limited to the big screen, however. Meanwhile, in an unsuspecting onsen, a customer nabs 20 volumes of the hit manga from the bathhouse's library!

In other news, Japanese ice cream is wierd, Tokyo is planning a mask festival, and chocolate bars are shrinking.

This Week In Japan: The legendary missing python has been discovered in an unexpected location, a train driver takes world's riskiest sh*t, Japanese officials debate LGBT discrimination, foreigners banned from dinner, President Macron announces visit to Japan, and Jon poses as a reporter to see the Olympic Torch relay.

Also, Kentaro Miura, creator of the legendary manga Beserk, passes away. Sources: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20210522/k10013045901000.html?utm_int=all_side_ranking-access_001

13 May 2020Hancock or Hanko? - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:40:28

Ever wondered how the Japanese sign documents? No? Well good news! This episode of the Geeks & Gaijins Podcast is all about Hanko, a type of stamp used in place of a signature! Jon explains the social significance, business systems, and frustrating work culture surrounding these little stamps have, and why the current global situation might lead to the Japanese abandoning the practice.

In other news, mother's day was last week, at least outside the UK, and so the boys are exploring motherhood the only way two young men know how: A list of the Best & Worst Anime Moms! Aren't they insightful?

Well that's Heian Japan, have a listen just in case you end up time travelling, so you know your plum blossom from your snow...

Also the Tale of Genji, the world's first novel, we look at how weird a book from a thousand years ago is. Turns out, VERY!

15 Apr 2020Sakura Shutdown - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:42:36

Spring has sprung, which means it's time for Japan to become it's most anime-est! Across the country, cherry blossoms - aka Sakura - are blooming, painting the country pink. Sadly for Japan, there will be no sakura viewing parties this year, due to concerns regarding you-know-what. This will not stop Jon from explaining what exactly a "Sakura Viewing Party" is to us foreigners, however. Score!

Snack break this weeks features something that may or may not be an actual ice cream, and Jon gets revenge on Tom by forcing him to not only wrestle with the English and Japanese languages, but German and French as well, as the Geeks and Gaijins podcast plays a game of "Guess that Loanword!". Such villainy!

22 Apr 2021Going The (Social) Distance - This Week In Japan00:53:34

There's a surprising amount of original content in this one. Is any of it any good? That remains to be seen. Or...heard, I guess. It's a podcast, innit.

This Week In Japans features baby otters, infinite cats, creepy clothes crime, a lucky bag blind buffet, police shooting a man upon request, and radioactive water. Mmmm, tingly!

Also, Jon plans how to make the Olympics safe (from covid, at least), because no-one else seems to be doing it.

How hard can it possible be?

29 Jul 2021The Great Candy Heist 1984 - This Week In Japan00:55:52

The Geeks & Gaijins Season Finale! It's our final episode on-location in Japan! The sun is shining (too much), the Olympics are in full swing (unfortunately), and there are no fun crimes stories this week (predictably). So join us on a trip back in time to 1984, as Jon regales us with the story of the Glico-Morinaga Extortion Case.

Also in this episode: Ghibli Museum fundraising, delicious non-radioactive peaches, and yet another typhoon.

Thanks to everyone who's listened in to us over the last two years. This podcast has been very important to the both of us during this time, and we're grateful to every open ear who shared in our joy, anger, and general nonsense throughout.

We'll be back in two weeks with a slightly revamped format, but the same lunacy as ever. Same Geek-Time, same Gaijin-Channel.

Until then, Sayonara Japan!

22 Jul 2021Everybody Wants To Be A Cat - This Week In Japan00:47:09

Enter the Nyanopticon

With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics finally about to start, Japan continues to be buffered by articles about just how badly things are going. This week features a tag-team of trouble, with Thomas Bach exacerbating the public's anger at the IOC, and Keigo Oyamada being announced as composer for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games opening and closing ceremonies, in spite of a history of abusive behaviour.

Before all that though, there's robot cat ears that read your brain waves, a way to stop crime without actually doing anything, and consuming the faces of beloved anime characters.

Enjoy!

11 Mar 2020Education Frustration - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:44:51

School's back in session!

Despite Corona Virus' best efforts, nothing can stop the Japanese Education System from doing what it does best: mercilessly testing children. This week, Jon will once again be our guide through the ups and downs (mostly downs, to be honest) of Japanese High School Entrance Exams.

It's also International Women's Day, so we will be including a short segment highlighting some important women in the male-dominated anime industry.

Taking the topics of anime and high-school hell and then combining them in quite literal fashion, Tom talks about Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-Kun, a cheerful, colourful Isekai/Shounen/Comedy combo that's sure to put a smile on the faces of even the saddest of Japanese children.

Hopefully.

They are all very small and have no money, so you can imagine the kind of stress they are under.

This week, the boys also discuss Japan's well-intentioned but somewhat lacking relationship with the English language, ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The winners for the Crunchyroll Anime Awards have also been announced, so Jon and Tom will be running through the list and responding with a resounding "Yeah, that makes sense."

Only the most insightful commentary here at Geeks & Gaijins!

15 Jan 2020[Classic] Galar, Games, Gatcha - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:27:08

Alternative Episode Title: Gotta Gatch' 'em All!

In this week's episode, Jon and Tom briefly return to the Brit-ish isles of the Galar Region to discuss the latest announcements regarding Pokemon Sword & Shield. The Isle of Armor and Frozen Tundra DLCs offer not just an oppurtunity to speculate on the future of Pokemon, but also Nintendo and gaming culture as a whole. Follow Jon as he recounts his knowledge of how the world's biggest form of media is enjoyed in Japan, and nod along politely with Tom as he complains about Japan's influence on the mobile games market.

Stay tuned to Geeks & Gaijins, as this week brings a special bonus episode! Crunchyroll have announced the nominees for their annual anime awards, and the boys have prepared their own review of the candidates and their favourites to win. Stay tuned for that episode's release in the next few days!

26 Aug 2020Theft! At The Ninja Museum - Geeks & Gaijins Podcast00:42:11

Who Ninjas the Ninjas?

This week, Jon and Tom present the founding of Anime Log, a free collection of classic anime on YouTube. Could this be a landmark moment in anime archival and increased popularity in the west? Or will it be swallowed by the YouTube Algorithm, like so many before it? Only time will tell. Praise be to the Omnissiah!

Additionally, there's a robbery at a ninja museum, our favourite anime openings, and a discussion about what is the correct order to consume media?

There's only one way to find out. Fight!

13 May 2021Snakes on a Lane - This Week In Japan00:48:50

Snake? Snake! Snaaaaaaaaake!

In other news, Japan makes the same bad puns as us, a tower that should not exist hasn't been demolished yet, cake is sporty now, and drying clothes on a wacky wavy inflatable-arm tube man. I promise no drugs were involved in this. I know, I'm dissappointed too.
