17 Jan 2020027 - How Pauline Narvas Overcame Gaming Addiction to Become a Full-Time Programmer, Speaker, and Inspirational Figure01:15:20

To say Pauline's story is inspiring would be doing it a disservice.

Having started her first 'side hustle' at 8 years old by learning how to turn HTML into websites, it seems like she was destined to be a part of the tech world.

However, when school came around she found herself at one of the lowest points of her life.

Constant bullying, poor grades, excessive gaming and bad eating habits led her to the realisation that something needed to be done.

It was at this point that Pauline quit video games, and started turning her life around for good.

Since then she has been listed as one of the most influential women in tech, done a number of public speaking gigs, influenced 100's of people to get into coding through numerous programs, and that's just scratching the surface.

Pauline's an inspiration to thousands of people on social media every single day, and I hope you find some of that inspiration from watching this podcast.

24 Dec 2019023 - How Your Gaming Addiction Affects Everyone In Your Life00:07:48

Take a few moments to think about the people who see you gaming every day. Your parents, carers, friends. Whoever it might be.

Now imagine you've swapped places.

What would you say to this person? Would it be an encouragement? Reflection? A simple "okay no problem"?

So, why aren't you saying it to yourself?

In this episode of Gaming the System, James explores what life is like for the people outside of your virtual bubble. Oftentimes it's easy to think we're the only ones affected by a gaming addiction, but in reality, that isn't the case.

Your loved ones see you every day, and they're powerless to help you overcome your problem. No matter how much it hurts them...

21 Feb 2020032 - Why Are New Activities Boring After You Quit Gaming?00:06:57

It's one thing to quit gaming and find some new hobbies to fill your time, it's another to develop these hobbies into meaningful passions that bring you fulfilment, motivation, and growth throughout your life.

The problem is, it's difficult. Gaming warps your ability to gain happiness from other things.

Nothing can compete with video games on a primal level when it comes to meeting your basic human needs. Combine it with other modern luxuries such as smartphones, food delivery, and even porn, and you've got the perfect conditions for humans to stop seeking fulfilment outside of what's comfortable to them.

In this episode of Gaming the System I go into why gaming is making everything boring, and what you can do about it. The answer is simpler than you think.

However, don't confuse simple with easy.

So why is it that you can go for 16 hours straight on a video game but can't maintain the focus to build new skills?

By the way, the podcast is only a fraction of what's contained in the blog post! Make sure to read it here!

In this episode of Gaming the System, James explores how gaming has desensitised your mind and how it affects your ability to make certain choices concerning your happiness.

You'll learn how you can take the focus you've developed through gaming and transfer it over to something productive, and start making real change come about.

15 Nov 2019014 - Internet Porn Is Destroying a Generation One Erection at A Time || Interview w/ Gabe Deem01:18:49

If you watch internet porn, it might be time to start rethinking.

Regardless of whether you watch it once a week or 3 times a day, it can have long-lasting damaging effects. Effects that today's guest, Gabe Deem, knows all too well.

He started watching internet porn at the ripe old age of 12, and from that, it spiralled into an uncontrollable addiction. It got so bad that he ended up developing erectile dysfunction at the age of 23.

Since then, he's undertaken an incredible transformation to become the man he is today.

His organization, Reboot Nation, offers advice to thousands of people on a regular basis. Not only that, but Gabe also speaks internationally in school, colleges, to professionals and even in Capitol Hill.

It was a huge privilege to have him on the show, and it was one of my favourite episodes to record. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

As always, thanks for tuning in. If you liked the episode I'd really appreciate you taking the time to give us a rating. It helps out far more than you realise!

29 Nov 2019016 - From Suicidal Twitch Streamer to Living My Dream Life: How I Escaped Rock Bottom00:30:00

I don't usually get too personal on this show. I never really thought it was the place to be emotional...

However, a conversation with a friend of mine, shortly followed by him urging me to share my story, prompted me to create this episode. I realised that there are hundreds, if not thousands of people in our community that are in the same position I was just a year ago.

I was horribly depressed, anxious, lonely, unhealthy and lacking any sense of clarity or determination.

I found myself in some horrible situations over the last 2 years, and at my worst point, I was living in a fly-infested apartment contemplating suicide while living a supposed dream life as a Twitch streamer.

But fast forward to 2019, and I find myself in a position where I can travel the world and I'm waking up every day with the motivation to work. It's incredible.

If I help even one person with this episode then it'll be worth almost breaking down into tears in front of hundreds of people!

As always, thanks for tuning in. If you liked the episode I'd really appreciate you taking the time to give us a rating. It helps out far more than you realise!

Parents! These are the 11 reasons why your teen or young adult stays in denial about their gaming problem... even when it's so obvious that it's affecting their life. 31 Jan 2020029 - How To Make Friends After You Quit Gaming00:13:01

When you quit gaming it often means leaving a lot of your old friends behind. Whether it's because you can't cope with them talking about video games all the time, inviting you to play, or because you're trying to shed your old identity as a gamer, it's never an easy process to go through.

So what can you do? Ultimately it comes down to one thing.

You have to become someone that can attract new friends.

If you're living a boring life with no hobbies and spend your free time on YouTube, it's not going to go well. Regardless of whether or not you're playing video games anymore.

If, however, you decide to get yourself out of your comfort zone and learn new skills, meet new people, and live an interesting life you'll soon find yourself at the centre of an awesome friendship group.

It's not easy, though. It can take a long time and a lot of effort to build new relationships. But I can assure you it's 100% worth it.

11 Oct 2019009 - Is Gaming Worse than Watching TV?00:07:25

If I had a dollar for every time someone said to me "playing video games is no worse than watching Netflix" I'd probably have about $200 give or take...

But, is there any truth to it? Well, kind of...

The problem is television isn't designed to be hyper-stimulating, unlike video games. You don't get pop-ups rewarding you for playing for a long time, you're not being challenged, and most of the time it's not social.

I had fun making this one!

14 Dec 2019020 - What if Your Friends Are Making You Relapse?00:09:22

When it comes to talking to your friends about your gaming problem, it's really freaking difficult. It's easy to convince yourself that you'll be laughed at and stigmatized, that your friends will kick you out of their life, or even abuse you.

So, how do you go about opening up this communication?

In this episode, I discuss some of the mistakes I made during my time in university and how you can avoid doing the same thing, as well as whether or not you should think about replacing your friendships groups if it's really becoming a problem.

24 Jan 2020028 - Why Twitch Is Destroying Your Mindset and Keeping You from Success00:08:37

You might think the biggest problem with Twitch is that you're spending too much time on the website, but you'd be wrong.

In reality, the Twitch community with their crabs-in-a-bucket attitude is holding you back in more ways than you think. When you spend your free time listening to people talk about how poorly their life is going and being proud of that fact, it's going to wear down your mindset to the point where eventually you're going to join in.

If you're trying to quit gaming and you're still watching Twitch, you might want to reconsider your relationship with the platform.

01 Nov 2019012 - The Link Between Gaming and Porn Addiction00:07:52

If you spend any amount of time on the internet you'll soon start to see how prevalent porn is in our modern world.

The rise in smartphone technology and high-speed internet has made porn more easily accessible than ever before in history. This has unsurprisingly led to a huge number of problems.

One of those issues is porn addiction.

As it turns out, gamers tend to watch a lot of porn. So much so, that a large number of people in our community come to us for help on both issues.

In this episode, I explore the relationship in further detail, providing references to scientific research and anecdotal evidence to highlight a rapidly growing problem faced by millions of people around the world.

10 Dec 2019019 - Do Loot Boxes Lead to Problem Gambling?00:11:05

It's time again to talk about everybody's favourite surprise mechanic, loot boxes.

Parents hate them, governments hate them, gamers hate them, and yet publishers continue to shove them down our throats at every chance they get.

They might seem like harmless fun, but more and more research is being done into their link with problem gambling. So today I'm going to look into what the science is saying and discuss this idea in more depth.

17 Dec 2019021 - How to Avoid Gaming Over Christmas00:14:29

Growing up, Christmas was always a time for three things; no school, food, and gaming. I'd always ask for gaming-related presents from my family and eagerly look for the game-shaped present in the pile of gifts under the tree. But, after battling against a gaming addiction for the last 5 years, I've come to place a lot more value on how important family is over Christmas.

I think about all the holidays I spent playing games and not engaging in activities. How must that have made my parents feel?

As it's almost Christmas, and no doubt a lot of you will be struggling with managing your gaming over the holiday, I thought I'd do an episode for those of you who want to see what life can be like without gaming.

Maybe you're a gamer that has wasted enough time in the virtual world, or you might be a non-gamer struggling with urges. Whoever you are, hopefully, you get some value from this episode.

21 Sep 2019006 - James' First 30 Days in Thailand: A Journey from Depressed Gaming Addict to Entrepreneur00:14:46

While in the middle of recording another episode, it dawned on me that it has been exactly 30 days since I embarked on a new chapter in my life and moved to Thailand to work for myself.

It hasn't been without its struggles (listen out for the story of why I burst into tears in my flat), but comparing myself now to who I was 2 months ago is like night and day.

I'm happier, more focused, relaxed, determined, passionate, confident and every other word I can think of. I don't think there has been a single negative since I moved out here.

In this episode, I talk about my journey from gaming addicted and depressed to becoming the best version of myself over the last year.

18 Oct 2019010 - Instant Gratification: What Is It and Why Is It Causing You so Many Problems?00:13:20

Instant gratification is probably the number 1 drug of the modern generation. You really can't escape it.

With smartphones always within arms reach, and an unlimited number of worlds ready to be explored at home or on the move, it's no wonder a human's attention span is now less than a Goldfish.

The problem with instant gratification, or a lack of delayed gratification, is that once you become accustomed to it you'll stop finding enjoyment in other activities. This is why it's so hard for gamers to move on and pick up new hobbies. They expect to get rewarded straight away, instead of doing the normal thing and building up progress over time.

Learn what instant gratification is all about in this episode of Gaming the System. Brought to you by Game Quitters.

25 Oct 2019011 - Are Parents to Blame for Gaming Addiction? w/ Nadja Streiter00:52:48

Nadja Streiter is a therapist, parent coach and Director of Programs at Game Quitters.

On this episode of Gaming the System she joins me in a discussion about whether or not parents are to blame for their child's addiction.

On the internet, the first thing that people criticize when gaming disorder gets mentioned is the parents. It's eas understand why. The parents are responsible for the child's upbringing, so they will have the greatest impact on whether or not a child develops an addiction. Right?

Well, not entirely.

Due to the changing world of gaming, more and more games are being designed to addict and it's only getting worse.

As I mentioned in the episode we're running a FREE webinar on the 31st October at 7 PM PST. It's all about the most common mistakes parents make when it comes to gaming addiction, and if you're a parent struggling at the moment you don't want to miss it. 27 Dec 2019024 - The Best Activities to Replace Gaming After You Quit00:30:09

So many people struggle to find new things to do after they quit playing video games that it even has its own name - The Void. You're so used to getting a certain level of stimulation from gaming, anything else you do just feels boring in comparison.

In this episode, I go over a few of my favourite hobbies that I think you should try if you want to quit gaming. They focus on the major needs that video games fulfil, and they all have a low barrier to entry.

You might think they're common choices or you just don't want to do them, and that's fine, but if you are still stuck in the void and are still saying you don't want to do them, then the problem isn't the hobby... It's you.

Activities featured in this episode:

- coding
- learn an instrument
- exercise/active hobbies
- photography
- language

Also, merry Christmas!

03 Dec 2019017 - How to Help a Loved One with Video Game Addiction w/ Cam Adair and Nadja Streiter00:27:38

It's one thing struggling with video game addiction yourself, but what can you do when you see someone you love destroying their life with gaming?

Maybe they're still living at home, struggling to get a job, overweight and are losing the will to live.

No matter how much you want to help them, the painful truth is that you can't convince someone to change. You can give them all the information you want, but it's not going to help them. If anything, it'll just make them resent you.

So, what can you do?

We designed our program, Reclaim, for one purpose: To help parents and loved ones to foster a deep understanding of video game addiction and learn how to effectively treat the disorder in someone close to them.

Over 4 modules, 40 lessons, worksheets, interviews and videos - you'll gain all of the knowledge you need to tackle the modern problem of video games once and for all.

The program was designed in conjunction with licensed therapist, parents coach and program director at Game Quitters - Nadja Streiter. Nadja learnt first hand the effects of video game addiction in her own children, so you can be sure that this program was written specifically with you in mind. We understand what you're going through, but it doesn't need to be like that forever.

10 Jan 2020026 - The Surprising Benefits of Relapsing00:09:08

I've relapsed far more times over the last 5 years than I'd like to admit. However, what was once a painful barrier accompanied by months of pain is now an opportunity for me to build self-awareness and overcome my problems much faster than I did in the past.

When I relapsed in the past, I always assumed that it was because I was a failure. I wasn't meant to quit gaming, and I should just stop trying to succeed in what I want to do and go back to playing video games.

But, over time, my mindset towards relapsing started to shift. Now, 5 years after I first stopped playing, I no longer have the same resentment of myself as I once did if I start to let gaming creep back into my life.

What did I change? Listen to the episode to find out!

20 Dec 2019022 - The Most Important Decision You Can Make when You Try to Quit Gaming00:04:27

In all of my friendship groups, I was always known as the gamer. I never stood out in any way, and whenever someone talked to me it'd usually be about video games.

At the time I didn't see anything wrong with it. But, when I look back on how different my life could have been if I just took it upon myself to be more, to do more, to aim higher and really achieve the things that I was capable of... I really wish I'd have known about it sooner.

It's a short episode today, but it's in reply to a message I was asked recently about whether I can talk in more detail on the topic of identifying as a gamer.

It might not seem like much, but it was actually the defining moment in my journey to overcome video game addiction and finally start turning my life around for the better.

Hopefully, it can do the same for you.

07 Jan 2020025 - Reflecting on 2019 and Starting Off the New Year Properly00:28:45

We're back! Hope you didn't miss the podcast too much over the new year's break, but after getting severe food poisoning and having to travel across the country, I thought I'd use the opportunity to take a bit of a break.

In this episode I'm going to go through my exact process for reflecting on 2019, why you need to do it, and what questions you should ask yourself.

I'd recommend taking some time to reflect on these questions and answer them as honestly as possible. Reflection is an incredibly powerful process, and it can really make the difference between success and failure at the start of 2020.

The questions I go through in the episode are:

- What went well in 2019?
- What surprised you?
- What are you most proud of accomplishing?
- What was your favourite day, moment, and experience?
- What did you discover about yourself?
- What were you most grateful for in 2019?
- When did fear hold you back?
- What have you learnt in the past year?
- Describe 2019 in 3 words

Chances are you haven't considered the answers to any of these questions. When you go through this exercise, I guarantee you'll remember things that you had completely forgotten about. It's amazing what pops up when you really think about it.

Hopefully, you find this episode helpful. There's going to be some amazing content coming to the podcast in the next few months, and I can't wait to show you everything we've got planned at Game Quitters!

If you haven't already I'd love for you to leave us a rating. It'll help us get the podcast in front of more people, and we can provide as much value as possible!

28 Feb 2020033 - Why Men Are 15x More Likely to Be Gaming Addicts + New Podcast Announcement!00:09:40

What do you think the average gamer looks like? A man in his early 20’s, perhaps a college student? Wrong. It’s actually a woman in her mid 30’s.

Why is it then that the average gaming addict is a 24-year-old male?

With men making up over 90% of the population of gaming addicts, scientists have been prompted to undertake research into why this is the case.

As it turns out, there may actually be underlying neurological reasons as to why men are more likely to become addicted to gaming, read more in the study here.

Personally, I think the naturally competitive nature of men plays a bigger role in it. Video games are the perfect place for men to assert dominance in ways that would have been fulfilled through fighting or sports in the past. It's no wonder then, with so many people playing games, that men have naturally tended to dominate the competitive space.

Want to know more? Read our article: Everything you need to know about gaming disorder.

Also, if you stick to the end of the episode I make a big announcement about the launch of a new podcast!

Life After Gaming is going to feature stories and interviews from the people that make Game Quitters possible: You!

I'll post more information in the future but you can have a read of the post on our forum here if you're interested!

16 Aug 2019002 - ESports: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly feat. Cam Adair00:16:13

ESports. You either love them or you hate them. Or, in most cases, you have no idea what they are.

With the recent success of the Fortnite World Cup, which saw 16-year-old 'Bugha' walk away with $3,000,000 in prize money, a number of discussions have been brought up around the topic of electronic sports.

Should the be banned? Are they bad for our health? They're good for us... You get the idea.

In this episode of Gamin the System I chat to the founder of Game Quitters, Cam Adair, about the positives (and negatives) of eSports, some valid concerns about the rise of the sports, as well as some potential outcomes we as an organization would like to see come about as a result.

As always, thanks for watching.

06 Sep 2019004 - How to Fill the Void After You Quit Gaming00:09:23

When people quit gaming, they're suddenly left with so much free time they have no idea what to do with it.

As a result, they deem their detox a failure and go back to gaming.

"I don't think I was meant to  quit gaming."

Usually, people end up going back to video games because they didn't put the systems in place beforehand to enable them to maintain a sense of direction after they quit and start the detox by hitting the ground running.

In this short episode of Gaming the System, James discusses how you can go about putting the necessary systems in place before you quit, to ensure you give yourself the best chance of success.

14 Feb 2020031 - Do Video Games Cause Violence?00:12:01

With tens of millions of teenagers playing violent video games such as Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, and PUBG do parents have cause for concern? Does playing video games make you violent? If you are playing violent video games, are you at risk of committing horrific acts of murder?

As it turns out, the answer isn't quite so black and white.

There has been a huge amount of research done on the topic of whether or not video games cause violence, and the general consensus sits somewhere in the middle.

Most people are in agreement that prolonged exposure at an early age to violent video games could increase the likelihood of aggressive behaviour in adolescence, however, aggressive doesn't necessarily mean violent.

You can find some links that I made use of throughout the episode down below, and there's a huge rabbit hole of information that you can end up getting lost in if you really want to.

13 Mar 2020035 - Are Online Games More Addictive than Offline?00:10:19

I couldn’t see myself spending more than a few hours on something like Solitaire, but if you put me in front of Dark Souls then it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

At Game Quitters, we see the same names pop up over and over again when people are talking about the most addicting games.

Modern video games are a far cry from the games of old. They’re no longer just intended to provide a few hours of entertainment. Gaming companies know exactly how to keep you hooked.

They understand how often to reward you, how to tailor their game to specific people, and how to extract as much money as possible from their players.

However, if games are designed to be addictive, does that also mean that certain games or genres are more likely to keep you hooked?

Read our list of the most addicting games in the world.

15 Mar 2020BONUS: How to Manage Gaming During the Coronavirus Pandemic00:27:15

Kids are at home and uncertainty is in the air... how do you find balance with technology use without constantly fighting and being stressed?

1) Get in the right mindset!

Reframe this crisis as an opportunity for you and your family to develop a deeper connection.

It might be painful at first, but don’t lose hope. Be prepared for bickering and decide how you are going to show up. We like the mantra, KFC: Kind, Firm, Calm.

Some of you might need to relax your rules a little…Okay but don’t feel you have to or get pressured into having no rules.

2) When it comes to screen time... focus on quality over quantity.

Are you/they watching cat videos on YouTube or learning to code? Are they FaceTiming with a friend or scrolling through Instagram? Are they playing a game that makes them angry or laughing and having a good time with mates? Are they playing educational games? Doing courses?

How they spend time on screens matters a lot more than "how much" time they spend on screens. And yes, sometimes, that even includes needing to watch a few cat videos on YouTube.

3) Use this newfound time to build skills and learn!

We always say we don't have time to read that book, do that course, clean that room, try that new hobby, pick up the guitar again, call that friend, write that book.

Now you have it. Invest in yourself wisely. That doesn't have to be all day, but every day, do something to grow and push yourself forward. And encourage your family to do the same.

This is a great opportunity for you to ask your tech savvy kids to teach you about the features on your phones or computers that you don't know.

4) Get healthy!

Work out a bit each day. Do it as a family. Put a yoga video on YouTube. Maybe break out the Nintendo Wii from the attic. Find time every day to do bodyweight exercises, stretch, meditate, get in shape! It will make staying home easier.

5) Establish a routine.

Maybe when you work. They do homework. You focus as a family for two hours and then take a break. Rinse and repeat as needed. This process is one day at a time. Use structure wisely to provide certainty.

6) Have a family meeting!

Gather everyone's input on what this experience has been for them and what they hope it to be over the next days, weeks, months. Let everyone have a voice!

Just get it out on the table so you can begin to have discussions on finding a compromise that works for your family. This is a good time to discuss family values!

If it starts get loud and confrontational, have everyone write their points and questions on index cards and go through them one at a time. Communicate expectations early and clearly.

This is also a good time to discuss any emotions or fears that are coming up around the crisis. Remember that some people are more comfortable communicating in writing and not out loud.

7) Establish "if then" consequences in writing.

Don’t go overboard.. especially if they are not realistic for you to adhere to over the next few weeks. Consistency is probably more important than rigidity at this time.

If this happens, then this happens. Standards are set and consequences are not surprises.

8) YOU ARE THE ROLE MODEL

Are you using technology wisely? Are you scrolling Twitter for your 18th hour today stressed and anxious and passing that onto other family members? Are you focusing on your own self-care? Are you embracing new hobbies?

Your capacity to be the best version of yourself at this time will be seen by others. Let your focus inspire them.

9) NEED MORE HELP?

We have a FREE FB group for parents to navigate gaming or digital overuse issues. Join here.

08 Nov 2019013 - Are Video Games Designed to be Addictive?00:14:37

If you asked me this question 15 years ago, I'd probably answer it with a resounding no. However, in recent years the gaming industry has shifted towards an approach that focuses on broken, microtransaction-filled, free-to-play games full of mechanics that are cleverly implemented in order to keep you hooked.

As it turns out, there are a load of psychological tactics game developers use in order to get the most engagement (money) out of their users. I can't talk about them all in this episode, but I cover the main points as well as going into what I think the industry needs to do in the future to avoid catastrophe.

As always, thanks for listening. If you enjoyed the episode don't forget to leave a review. It really helps us out.
