14 Jun 202131. Taking Pride: Establishing an Inclusive Veterinary Community00:27:46

As you probably know by now, Pride Month is celebrated annually in June to recognize the LGBTQ+ community's fight for equality and to celebrate the freedom to be yourself. And, if you've been listening to the podcast regularly, you also know that veterinary medicine is considered to be one of the least diverse and perhaps one of the most conservative professions in the country.

Dr. Mia Cary, CEO of Pride VMC, is one of many on a mission to change that. Over the past year, she's joined us on the show for some tough conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion in the veterinary field. In today's episode, we've collected highlights from those discussions to reinforce the importance of DEI in veterinary medicine and to raise awareness of the struggles minority groups face in a largely homogeneous profession.

15 Nov 202387. Open Wide! Brushing Up on Veterinary Dentistry | MVC 2024 Preview Series00:30:15

Most of us are well aware of the impact of dental care on not just our oral health, but our overall wellness. This is true not only for humans, but animals as well.

Studies have shown that the vast majority of cats and dogs over the age of 3 have some degree of periodontal disease, and with pet ownership on the rise, it is more important than ever to educate clients on the importance of regular dental cleanings for their pets.

But until recently, dentistry wasn’t a staple of veterinary education, so many practitioners haven’t gotten the hands-on training needed to offer this vital service to their patients. So where do you begin?

On today’s show, we are continuing our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series with two rockstars of veterinary dentistry: Dr. Jamie Berning and technician Jill Bates, who are here to share a sneak peek at their two days of lectures and hands-on training at the MVC.

09 Aug 202135. Finding Safe Harbor: Online Refuge for Veterinarians00:21:24

They say it's a small world, but it's getting more and more difficult to stand out from the crowd. Small, independent business owners have to work harder than ever to set themselves apart from big corporations in order to attract not only clients, but staff members. And with ever-increasing demands on veterinary practices to manage both the medicine and the business itself, stress is at an all-time high. Now more than ever, veterinarians need a place to find shelter from the storm.

That's exactly what Harbor—an online community for the veterinary profession—is designed to provide.

In this episode, Harbor ambassador Thamires Nunes introduces us to this new platform for veterinary professionals and students. We explore Harbor's networking and mentorship capabilities, discuss how Harbor supports veterinary wellbeing, and find out how Harbor is giving back to the profession.

In part two, we continue our Meet the Board series with Dr. Scott Pendleton, AVMA alternate delegate for Ohio.

04 Apr 202248. When Media Calls, Part 1: Confident Communication is Key00:19:09

Veterinary professionals are, on the whole, an introverted bunch—so when it comes to talking to the media, many would rather express anal glands or tell an owner their beloved Princess Sophia is obese than be interviewed for the news. But with the population of pet owners growing larger every day, and the volume of unreliable sources increasing exponentially, it is more important than ever to ensure the public is getting accurate information from the actual experts.

In this episode, we're joined by Dr. Courtney Campbell, veterinary surgeon and media personality, who shares his tips for handling the media. This is the first in a two-part series aimed it helping you handle media inquiries with confidence and grace.

Today's episode is sponsored by Blue River PetCare, a growing community of 160+ veterinary practices. 08 Sep 202018. College in the Age of COVID00:28:21

When hands-on experiences are such an important part of the learning process, especially for fields like veterinary medicine, how can the education model be adapted to keep everyone safe without impacting quality? In this episode, Mia chats with two veterinary students, who share how their school has implemented a hybrid model and the effects it's having on their education, extracurriculars, and social activities.

09 Mar 202005. Creating Community: Diversity in Veterinary Medicine00:17:38

Veterinary medicine is known to be one of the whitest professions in America, which can create fertile ground for discrimination and marginalization. In this episode, PRIDE Veterinary Medical Community's CEO, Dr. Mia Cary, joins us at the Midwest Veterinary Conference for an inspiring conversation about how that's changing and why diversity and inclusion are so important.

08 Nov 202386. Purrmission Granted: Asking Animals for Consent for Better Vet Visits | MVC 2024 Preview Series00:33:14

In the age of the Me Too movement, most people are well aware of the necessity of asking permission before touching another person. But why not apply that concept to animals as well? After all, animals have good and bad days. Sometimes they want to play and interact; other times they'd rather enjoy some alone time—just like humans. Implementing the same permission-seeking protocol with animals could have dramatic effects. The number of bite-related injuries would undoubtedly decrease. Behavior-related relinquishments would drop. And imagine how different veterinary visits could be, if pets could be trained to consent to treatment!

That's exactly what certified animal behavior consultant Steve Dale reveals in this episode, the first in our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series. With his unique perspective bridging the gap between pet parents and veterinary professionals, Steve digs into the topics he'll be discussing at the MVC, ranging from animal consent and behavior modification, to the evolution of pet ownership and the profound connections we share with our furry companions.

21 Sep 202019. Balancing Act: How to "Do it All" without Neglecting Yourself00:19:35

Veterinary professionals are no strangers to burnout. With so many demands on your time and attention, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. There’s hope! All you need is to get organized. But where do you start?

In this episode, Mia is joined by fourth-year OSU CVM student Becca Makii, who has fine-tuned a process for managing the demands of school, work, extracurriculars, and personal commitments—while still finding time for self-care. Listen in as she shares simple ways to stay on top of everyday responsibilities, explains the skewed perspective that holds many people back from reaching their goals, and discusses the most important step of the process.

24 Feb 202004. Pay it Forward: Volunteers in Veterinary Medicine00:15:09

Studies have shown that being an active member of a trade organization makes professionals more successful than their non-member colleagues. But how can you get involved? In this episode of Fully Vetted, Mia and David sit down with AVMA District V Representative and longtime OVMA volunteer, Dr. Robert Knapp, to learn about his commitment to "paying it forward" in the veterinary community.

In the second part of the program, David talks with OVMA District 2 Representative, Dr. Amanda Wagner, to learn more about why she has taken on a leadership role in the Association.

13 Dec 202391. Fishful Thinking: Navigating the Currents of Aquatic Veterinary Medicine | MVC 2024 Preview Series00:24:59

Pet ownership has been on the rise over the past few years, and that extends beyond traditional furry friends. According to recent surveys, some 12 percent of pet-owning households globally have pet fish. Furthermore, about half of fish consumption comes from the aquaculture industry, which produces more than 80 million tons of fish annually to meet that demand.

But despite this growing trend, fish medicine remains a very niche area within the broader veterinary profession. This shortage in veterinarians and technicians able to treat fish stems in part from a lack of education… which brings us to today’s episode, as we continue our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Nora Hickey and Dr. Myron Kebus to the show. Our guests are slated to speak at the conference, and they're here to give us a sneak peek into their sessions and lab in the aquaculture track of programming. Tune in to learn more!

2022 MIDWEST VETERINARY CONFERENCE PREVIEW SERIES

He shares a sneak peek at his MVC sessions, which are aimed at providing practical approaches to some of the most common small animal emergencies the everyday practitioner encounters—and boosting their confidence in treating these cases.

21 Dec 202264. The Bare Necessities: Natural Remedies in Veterinary Medicine | MVC 2023 Preview Series00:15:41

2023 MIDWEST VETERINARY CONFERENCE PREVIEW SERIES

Scientific advances have made modern veterinary treatments very effective, but let’s face it: They don’t always work. You and your team can be doing everything right, but the patient just doesn’t improve. What do you do when conventional options have run out?

For Dr. Alexia Tsakiris, the answer is to get back to nature. Her approach is to integrate herbs—along with other therapies, such as acupuncture—into traditional treatments to improve not just the symptoms, but the entire patient. This holistic philosophy has guided her practice over the course of her career, leading to improved outcomes for both animals and their people.

In this episode, Dr. Tsakiris joins us as we continue our 2023 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series. She shares how she went from a 100% conventional practitioner to an integrative medicine vet and offers compelling reasons for giving it a try. She also gives listeners a sneak peek at her sessions at the MVC, which center around the use of herbs and how any small animal practitioner can begin integrating alternative therapies into their everyday practice.

17 Jan 202494. Smooth Sailing: Charting a Course for a Successful Mentorship Program | MVC 2024 Preview Series00:23:09

Having a solid support system is vital to new graduates’ success—and, by extension, the practice at which they work. With so much to learn and only four years of vet school in which to learn it, having someone around who can show you the ropes may be the difference between staying on board and jumping ship. In fact, about a third of veterinarians will leave their first practice within 14 months.

So how do you reverse that trend? There are many possible solutions, but a strong mentorship program is key. But what is mentorship? Ask five different people, and you’ll get five different answers.

In today’s episode, Dr. Kate Boatright joins us for another installment in our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series. She is passionate about mentorship and will be sharing her expertise with attendees in the Staff Development track of programming. Tune in for a sneak peek!

05 Oct 202257. Battle Lines: Identifying Conflict & Stress at Work00:23:55

WAR AND PEACE IN THE WORKPLACE SERIES, PART I

In today's demanding world, conflict is inevitable. With so many clashing personalities, opinions, and values among clients, colleagues, family members, and random strangers on the street, it's impossible to avoid strife. But you can control how you respond to it.

The first step is learning how to identify festering conflict. The next step is becoming aware of your default defense mechanisms and putting in place healthy habits for defeating it. In doing so, you'll become more resilient and less stressed, both at work and at home.

Sounds straightforward, right? It may be simple, but it definitely isn't easy.

In this episode, we're kicking off a new two-part series on conflict and stress in the workplace. Along with our human resources expert, Maura Stevenson, we discuss the seemingly never-ending cycle of stress and conflict, talk about why both are necessary, and explore ways to break that cycle.

2023 MIDWEST VETERINARY CONFERENCE PREVIEW SERIES

Everyone knows the stereotype: "Dogcatchers" are portrayed in movies as the evil villain that snatches up lost animals, drags them to the pound, and locks them away in a cold cage, never to be seen again. Sound familiar? Though not used as much nowadays, the old-fashioned term has had a lasting negative impact on the animal control profession and the public's perception of it.

In this episode, part of the 2023 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series, Animal Control Supervisor Daniel Ettinger joins us to talk about the importance of changing these stereotypes and why veterinary professionals should have a solid understanding of what humane agents do. He also shares highlights from his MVC sessions in the Humane Agent Training sub-track of the MVC's shelter animal program.

12 Jul 202379. The Five: Your Dream Team for Success00:29:31

But how true is it?

11 Jan 202366. Becoming The Modern Veterinary Professional | 2023 MVC Preview Series00:15:22

2023 MIDWEST VETERINARY CONFERENCE PREVIEW SERIES

Just because things have "always been done that way" doesn't mean they should be. After all, the veterinary profession has changed dramatically in the 21st century; so too should the veterinary professionals who work in it. Tradition has its place and might be a great starting point, but things must continually be evaluated in order for the profession to thrive.

Enter the "modern veterinary professional." This is a person who looks at the way things are and says, “Something has to change, it has to be now, and it has to start with me.” No longer do you need to be stuck, broke, and frustrated in your career! There are ways you can take back control and ultimately gain more time, more money, and more impact—both in your professional and personal life.

In this episode, Dr. Jennifer Quammen and Ryan Smith of Veterinarian Coaching join us to explore the paradigm of the modern veterinary professional. They offer a sneak peek at their MVC 2023 sessions, during which they'll dive deep into their model of the modern veterinarian and how you can make simple changes that will have a huge impact on your overall success.

17 May 202376. Stress Less, Part I: Herbal Medicine for People + Pets00:20:58

In today's high-demand society, stress and anxiety have become more common than ever. Unfortunately, it's much easier to get it than it is to relieve it—for both pets and people. Tackling anxiety and depression is often a trial-and-error situation. For some, finding the right treatment is easy. For others, it's a long, drawn-out process that involves trying many different medications and tinkering endlessly with dosages.

But there's another option. For Dr. Alexia Tsakiris, the answer is to look at the entire patient and all their symptoms—not just their stress: Environment, diet, gut health, age, and all the other big and little variables that could be contributing to their symptoms. Using this information, she then customizes an approach using a combination of herbs best suited to that whole patient. This holistic approach has guided her practice over the course of her career, leading to improved outcomes for both animals and their people.

In the first episode of this two-part series, we explore the possibilities of herbal veterinary medicine and what it takes to get started. Dr. Tsakiris talks about the extensive education and training required, research that backs the use of herbal remedies, and how to determine whether a product is good quality. She also shares a few of the herbs she's successfully used to treat stress and anxiety in both her patients and clients.

16 May 202251. More Than Just an Animal: Pets Help the Heart Heal00:32:12

Over the years, myriad studies have proven that animals have positive effects on people’s lives: Aside from the companionship, simply owning a pet can help reduce stress, increase physical activity, boost immunity, and improve cardiovascular health, among other physical and mental benefits.

For Dr. Stephanie Jones, the heart health benefits are paramount. She’s seen the profound impact of animal interaction among children and firmly believes that pets really can make the heart healthier. Not only physically, but—perhaps even more powerfully—emotionally as well.

As founder of the Florida-based Pets Help the Heart Heal, Dr. Jones has made it her life’s mission to uplift, educate, and inspire both children and adults through the power of the human-animal bond. And inspire she has!

In this episode, Dr. Jones shares her story: What prompted her to establish Pets Help the Heart Heal, why it’s so important to her, and how its mission is spreading across the country—and, more importantly, how you, too, can make a difference in a child’s life.

16 Aug 202381. All the Feels: Using Empathy to Connect with Clients00:38:28

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE SECRET OF SUCCESS SERIES

Veterinarians, technicians, and other animal care professionals are widely known as highly empathic. Being able to understand the feelings of others helps us establish stronger connections with both colleagues and clients, which in turn increases compliance and improves medical outcomes. But empathy is a double-edged sword. How do you tap into that empathy, day after day, without getting an emotional overload? And what if you simply can't empathize, either because you can't relate to the situation or you disagree with it entirely?

Today we’re welcoming back Amy VanDeWater of Glue Veterinary Coaching, who’s back to continue our emotional intelligence series. In this episode, we’re picking up with EQ skill number three: Social awareness. Listen in as Amy explains what social awareness is, describes why it's important in a veterinary setting, and offers advice for managing your own emotions that result from being aware of everyone else's.

In this episode, Dr. Christina Chambreau joins us to introduce us to the possibilities of homeopathic medicine. The owner of Healthy Pets, People and Planet, Dr. Chambreau is a co-founder of the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy and a recognized authority on homeopathic veterinary medicine. Listen in as she introduces us to homeopathic medicine and gives us a sneak peek into her MVC sessions, which offer an alternative approach to treating both animals and the planet.

25 Oct 202385. The Buck Stops Here: Preventing Chronic Wasting Disease in Ohio Deer00:21:42

Across the scenic landscape of Ohio, where the cervid industry plays a significant role in the state's economy, the threat of chronic wasting disease (CWD) looms large. Although only a few dozen captive and wild deer have been identified in Ohio, officials at the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) aren't taking chances: With no available vaccine or treatment for this fatal neurodegenerative disease, an epidemic could have a catastrophic effect on both the economy and environment.

On this episode, we welcome back Dr. Liane Davila-Martin, whose job at ODA is to ensure CWD stays in check. As a veterinary epidemiologist, her goal is to assess the risks and analyze data to predict—and help prevent—CWD outbreaks in Ohio's deer populations. Through initiatives like the CWD Herd Certification Program, Dr. Davila-Martin and her colleagues are working tirelessly to control and prevent the spread of this deadly disease.

In the interview, Dr. Davila-Martin reviews the clinical signs of chronic wasting disease, explains the reporting requirements, and explores the role of ODA's cervid health program.

28 Jun 202378. A Bum Rap: Changing Perceptions about Animal Control00:26:05

Everyone knows the stereotype: "Dogcatchers" are portrayed in movies as evil villains that snatch up lost animals, drag them to the pound, and lock them away in a cold cage, never to be seen again. Sound familiar? Though not used as much nowadays, the old-fashioned term has had a lasting negative impact on the animal control profession and the public's perception of it.

29 Nov 202389. Beyond the Barn: The Urban Farm Animal Dilemma | MVC 2024 Preview Series00:24:16

Pet ownership is on the rise, and it’s not just cats and dogs. More and more, small livestock—pygmy goats, potbellied pigs, and backyard chickens—are being kept as pets in urban and suburban areas. But what happens when that miniature pig reaches maturity and its unprepared owners can’t properly care for the 200-pound animal in their third-floor apartment? What happens when the baby goat outgrows its pajamas, and the reality of caring for a farm animal sets in?

Finding veterinary care for food animal species can be difficult in the big city, where most practitioners specialize in small animals. And when the owners are ill equipped to care for farm animals, the unfortunate reality is, many are surrendered to shelters that may not be outfitted to house or care for them. Worse yet, they are abandoned or even seized.

In today’s episode, we’re continuing our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series with Dr. Alissa Wilhelm, a mixed-animal practitioner and assistant professor at OSU Large Animal Services. From husbandry and wellness plans to common diseases and treatment, she offers a sneak peek into her sessions in the Shelter Animal track. Her goal is to equip shelters and small animal veterinarians with basic knowledge of nontraditional pets, so they are better able to treat these animals and educate their owners.

As a result, practices have had to make a lot of changes, not only to comply with new regulations, but more importantly, to do their part to prevent drug diversion and minimize opioid overdose deaths. But how has animal care been affected?

In today’s episode, we continue our 2024 MVC preview series with Dr. Jane Quandt, professor of comparative anesthesia at the University of Georgia. She’s joining us to share a sneak peek into her pain management and anesthesia sessions, including the use of opioids and alternative options.

Ohio's new law requiring veterinarians to report suspected companion animal abuse is about to go into effect. Sounds simple, but there are many shades of gray that can make reporting a complicated matter. In today's episode, Dr. Allison Lash of the Cleveland APL explains the process of reporting and what comes after, and shares examples of real-life cruelty cases she encountered during her career.

Did you know the Hispanic community is the fastest growing population in the United States and Canada? Did you also know that almost a quarter of the 85 million pet owners in the U.S. are Hispanic, but only 5% of veterinarians are?

Held annually between September 15 through October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of Latinx Americans. In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Liane Davila-Martin, a 2022 Ohio State grad who is making her own contributions to veterinary medicine.  She is passionate about improving Hispanic representation in the profession and providing more support to Hispanic pet owners — not only during this month, but year round.

24 Aug 202017. Veterinary Medicine: The Whitest of them All00:23:57

The veterinary profession has historically been the least diverse field in the United States—a trend that endures even in 2020. Why do black people make up such a small fraction of the veterinary workforce (no more then 3 percent at any given time!), and what can we do to change centuries of racism and discrimination? In the second installment of Fully Vetted's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine series, Dr. Mia Cary joins us to break down how anyone in the veterinary profession—from individual practitioners all the way up to national leaders—can effect real, measurable change.

27 Jun 202254. Tech Support, Part II: One Problem, Multiple Voices00:14:01

TACKLING THE TECHNICIAN SHORTAGE SERIES, PART II

What is behind the widespread shortage of technicians, and what can be done to reverse it? It's a complicated question many organizations are asking but no one has yet been able to answer. In 2021, OVMA established a task force to investigate this worsening trend, and in the past year, it has dug deep into the root of the problem in an effort to better understand its complexities and identify potential solutions.

In the pilot episode of Fully Vetted’s Tackling the Technician Shortage Series, we met Dr. Diana Cron, technician Kelley Norris, and Dr. Jennifer Wells of OVMA’s Technician Recruitment & Retention Task Force. They offered a brief history of the technician shortage, explored the factors that laid the groundwork, and discussed how the profession as a whole has been impacted.

Missed the first episode? Listen here »

In this, the second installment of the three-episode series, we explore a trio of unique but intertwined perspectives: Those of the veterinary technician, the practice owner, and the educator. Our guests also delve into the results of a task force-led survey, focusing on reasons technicians cite for staying at or leaving a practice—or the profession altogether.

The discussion sets the stage for the series conclusion, in which we'll look at the current state of technician education and training; possible improvements for the future; and ways veterinarians and practice owners can improve the technician experience to keep them happy, healthy, and employed.

10 Jan 202493. Chill Out: Conditioning a Relaxation Response in Animals | MVC 2024 Preview Series00:35:12

Relaxing on command is difficult for people, not to mention for dogs and cats. When we and our pets are naturally inclined to always be doing something—working, listening, even just thinking—turning off and relaxing can be difficult. But it is possible, and conditioning a relaxation response can have widespread applications and general health benefits benefits.

In today’s episode, veterinary behaviorist Dr. Christopher Pachel offers a teaser into the “magic” of conditioned relaxation: What it is, why it’s useful, and how to go about achieving it in animals. It is one of 12 topics he’ll be covering at the 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference. We also talk about how people’s everyday stress can impact their animals, how separation anxiety has shifted in the post-COVID world, and where medications come into the equation. He’ll also share insights into the sticky topic of rehoming an aggressive animal versus behavioral euthanasia.

If you enjoy the conversation, be sure to attend Dr. Pachel’s sessions at the 2024 Hybrid MVC! Visit www.mvcinfo.org/attendees for more information and to register.

23 Aug 202136. Down on the Farm: The Life of a Rural Veterinarian00:25:31

It's certainly not news: Rural veterinarians are in short supply, growing ever more scarce as new graduates opt to practice in a bustling metropolis, where pets are plentiful and pay is higher. But for a select few, serving in a rural area—where everyone knows everyone, life is simpler, and community is important—has infinitely more appeal.

In this episode, Dr. Scott Pendleton of Heritage Veterinary Clinic in Hopewell, Ohio, recounts his experiences as a rural veterinarian, what's changed over his 30-year career, and has stayed—and might always stay—the same. He also explains some of the less-obvious differences between city life and country life, offers advice for individuals interested in working in an underserved area, and shares his predictions for the future of rural veterinary medicine.

26 Jul 202134. Digital Footprints: Improved Tracking of Animal Movements00:23:36

Like it or not, the world is becoming more digitized every day — and the veterinary profession is no exception. Advances in technology have elevated the level of care you can provide your patients, as well as making your day-to-day practice faster, easier, and more efficient.

That too is the goal of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, which is increasing its efforts to educate practitioners on the benefits of electronic certificates of veterinary inspection (eCVI). Despite the availability of simple-to-use apps and innovative software, most of Ohio's veterinarians continue to submit paper-based health certificates to ODA—a process that is time consuming and tedious for both sides, not to mention more prone to inaccuracies and errors.

In this episode, Dr. Dennis Summers, interim state veterinarian at ODA, joins us to explain why eCVIs are not only easier to use, but vital to ensuring animal health. He describes the benefits of eCVI apps, talks about pain points and workarounds, and discusses how Ohio veterinarians can make the switch.

In part two, we continue our Meet the Board series with OVMA District 1 Representative Dr. Suzanne Savage of Toledo.

07 Feb 202497. Weighing Options: A Spectrum of Care to Meet Every Patient's Needs | MVC 2024 Preview Series00:20:04

There are a variety of factors that influence a client's decision to treat their pets: Not everyone can afford the "gold standard," nor does everyone want lengthy or difficult treatments for their pets. But that doesn't mean they have no options.

The term "spectrum of care," though relatively new, isn't a foreign concept by any means. In fact, veterinarians are masters of offering a range of care options at different price points and commitment levels to ensure animals get the treatment they need to live healthy, happy lives for as long as they can.

In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Steven Budsberg, who is leading a new area of MVC programming dedicated to spectrum of care. He explains what spectrum of care means for the veterinary team and offers a sneak peek of what attendees will learn by attending the Canine Spectrum of Care track at the 2024 MVC.

19 Apr 202374. The Secret Formula of Life, Part III: Using Your Power for Good00:16:27

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE SECRET OF SUCCESS SERIES

By now, we know that we have the power control our day-to-day experience by strengthening and using our self-awareness and self-management skills. But what happens when something outside your control—namely, the people around you who are paying more attention to the "villain voices"—zaps your power? Like any superhero, we need to use our powers for good, not evil!

Today, Amy VanDeWater of Glue Veterinary Coaching is back for the final installment in our series on emotional intelligence, a.k.a. our ability to be aware of and manage our emotions and the emotions of others. Amy believes EQ is a superpower that can have a massive impact on our lives, and the sooner we learn to wield that power, the sooner we can achieve our heroic quest to find happiness, success, and fulfillment.

In this episode, Amy offers encouragement for setting off on your own EQ journey, explains how to handle negative people we can't avoid, and shares tips for helping others achieve EQ enlightenment.

03 May 202128. Wellness in the Veterinary Profession: The Perfect Storm?00:22:17

What do you get when you put empathic caregivers known to neglect their own health into a high-stress, demanding profession? The perfect storm.

At this point, we all know wellness is a big issue in the veterinary community. Compassion fatigue, burnout, and suicide are being discussed with increasing frequency, as are their causes: Working long hours, crippling loan debt, and demanding clients, just to name a few. But threats to mental health and overall wellbeing are much more nuanced than we may realize, and so too are their solutions.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, Mia and Krysten kick off a new series tackling mental health in the veterinary profession. In this episode, our wellness advocates discuss factors that make this field so risky for highly empathic people, why common advice and coping strategies don't always work, and what unique threats they faced in their own professional lives.

31 May 202377. Stress Less, Part II: Implementing Herbal Medicine in Your Practice00:15:09

In the second part of our herbal medicine series, Dr. Tsakiris is back to offer some tips to practitioners who are interested in offering herbal medicine in their conventional practice. Where can you and your staff find reputable training courses? What are the legalities you need to be aware of? Tune in for the answers to these questions and more!

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE: THE SECRET OF SUCCESS SERIES

Anyone who tells you they know the secret to finding success and happiness is either trying to sell you something or flat-out wrong. Everyone knows there's no magical formula for anything, let alone something as nebulous as personal fulfillment.

Or is there?

Today, we welcome back Amy VanDeWater of Glue Veterinary Coaching for the first installment in our series on emotional intelligence, a.k.a. our ability to be aware of and manage our emotions and the emotions of others. She believes EQ is a superpower that can have a massive impact on our lives, and the sooner we learn to wield that power, the sooner we can achieve our heroic quest to find happiness, success, and fulfillment.

In part one, we lay the groundwork for Amy's "Secret Formula of Life" by digging into the concept of emotional intelligence, focusing on the first pillar of self-awareness, and introduces us to the inner voices that, if left unchecked, can sabotage every facet of life. Most importantly, she explains how to identify these voices in order to improve our experience, both at home and at work.

2023 MIDWEST VETERINARY CONFERENCE PREVIEW SERIES

For many general practitioners, ophthalmology is intimidating. Even if you can translate the language of eyes into regular English (just what is a uvea, anyway?), offering eye exams and accurately diagnosing your patients’ leaky, red eyes or sudden blindness requires expensive specialized equipment and advanced training that you don’t have. Referring clients to a specialist is the only option.

Or is it?

In this episode, veterinary ophthalmologist Dr. Kate Myrna shares some good news: Ophthalmology doesn’t always have to be complicated! There are ways to simplify eye exams and make accurate diagnoses using simple tools you already have on hand. If you’re intrigued by what you hear, be sure to sign up for her sessions at the 2023 MVC.

17 May 202129. The Cost of Wellbeing: Who Pays the Price?00:24:59

VETERINARY WELLBEING, PART II: PREVENTING & HANDLING CRISES

Listen to the first installment in this series » 28. Wellness in the Veterinary Profession: The Perfect Storm?

As we well know by now, myriad variables impact a person's mental health, and when mental health decreases, so too does physical health and overall wellbeing. Further, if someone doesn't have a support system or know how to deal with these variables, their problems can spiral out of control and affect all facets of life.

And it doesn't just affect individuals: Companies are also hit hard by mental health issues in the form of lower productivity, poor staff morale, and increased absenteeism—not to mention a financial cost (to the tune of tens of billions of dollars annually, according to the CDC). On the flip side, healthy employees are happier, more productive and focused, and miss less work.

If everyone pays a high price for poor wellbeing, the logical solution is, first, to prevent the problem from compounding, and second, to have a failsafe in place just in case it does. After all, we offer wellness plans and preventive care for our patients. Why not for ourselves and our colleagues as well?

In this episode, we pick up where we left off with our Veterinary Wellbeing Series. Our panelists return to talk about inexpensive but effective ways employers can support their staff before a crisis arises. We also discuss what to do if the stress of the profession becomes toxic and how to know when it's time to move on.

WAR AND PEACE IN THE WORKPLACE SERIES, PART II

Missed part one? Listen here »

Stress and conflict are inevitable, but they're not inherently bad. Sometimes, they can help you identify inefficiencies in a particular process and force you to find better approaches. Other times, they might encourage you to grow as a person or gain new skills that help you tackle a problem. Whether you flounder or flourish in the face of stress is largely up to you.

In this episode, our human resources guru, Maura Stevenson, is back with tips for how you can become more adept at identifying stress and conflict at work and, more importantly, resolving it. She explains what the practice owner or manager's role should be in reducing stress in the workplace, as well as to what extent they should be involved in handling conflicts among colleagues. We also discuss practical ideas (such as visual planning and batching) for managing the stressors of everyday life—big and small, at work and at home. Finally, she offers sage advice on how to let go of the things that are too much for you to handle, and how to make peace with it.

Enter the 2021 Virtual MVC.

In this episode, host Mia Cunningham chats with OVMA Executive Director Jack Advent and Communications & Technology Director Krysten Bennett about the OVMA's annual conference, which for the first time ever, is going online in February 2021. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?!

21 Mar 202247. Large Animal Abuse: Learning to Listen to Your Spidey Senses00:24:38

Although egregious animal cruelty is easy to spot, there are more subtle forms of neglect and abuse that can be more difficult to define—even when you are familiar with a species' typical behaviors and normal health measures. But how do identify abuse in those animals you rarely, if ever, work with?

Even so, most veterinary professionals know it when they see it. They just need to pay attention to their instincts.

In this episode, we are joined by Drs. Dennis Summers, Ohio's state veterinarian, and Alina Vale, official veterinarian for the California Horse Racing Board. Together, they dig in to the subtleties of large animal abuse and neglect: It's not as simple to define as small animal abuse, and it's often much more subtle. They discuss what it looks like, how and why it happens, and how often it occurs. Most importantly, they explain how veterinarians who have less experience with large animals—particularly small animal practitioners and new graduates—should handle suspected cases... And it all starts with listening to your gut.

2022 MIDWEST VETERINARY CONFERENCE PREVIEW SERIES

Aquaculture is a growing area of veterinary medicine, but few veterinarians have extensive experience treating fish patients, making an already tricky science even trickier. According to Dr. Kevin Neves, almost everything related to fish health comes back to one thing: Water quality.

In this episode, Dr. Neves—self-described marine biologist, fish nutritionist, aquatic toxicologist, and fish physiologist—joins us as we continue our 2022 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series. He gives us a glimpse into what he's learned about fish medicine during his two decades of aquaculture research and shares a sneak peek at his upcoming MVC sessions.
