Thank you for visiting my podcast.I tell a wide range of stories - particularly the truly ancient creation stories of indigenous peoples, often learning these direct from shaman storytellers in many tribal lands. These stories have been fireside tales, shared by elders for up to 50,000 years of oral tradition. Within them are keys to unlock your true potential and dissolve fear and disease. They are the gatekeepers to the manifestation of your dreams.I am the father to four children, now all adults. I was midwife at their births. Before becoming a dad I worked for Greenpeace in both Australia and the USA. Most famously I helped to spearhead the campaign which one year turned back the entire Japanese whaling fleet. I was one of four trustees who founded a charity which has now built a residential school for Himalayan children, protecting them from threats such as dire poverty and trafficking.I know the Power of Story. I have used it to beat stage 3 cancer. I have used it to save myself while stuck in quicksand. And I have used it to transform the lives of countless people, who have been in my live audiences during my never-ending Master Storyteller tour.Under the name The Man From Story Mountain, since the year 1995 I have been a touring as a Master Storyteller.I have been Storyteller-In-Residence for the mental health charity Mind, and also on the famous Golden Hinde Museum (a life-size working replica of Sir Francis Drake's famous pirate galleon, commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II). My other clients are numerous, from Her Majesty's Prisons to The National Trust, English Heritage, and performing at every Glastonbury Festival between 1996 to 2019.I am the owner of the famous fully painted Medicine Tipi which featured as the profile image on Glastonbury Festival’s official Facebook page for over a decade.I am the author of circa 15 books, including paperbacks, e-books and audiobooks. They are all focused on powerful stories to transform lives for the better.

11 Nov 2024Looking back one year to Armistice Day 2023 Special: Peace Pigeons / Chapter 10 of my novel War Pigeons.01:04:12

Send us a text

This special edition of The Man From Story Mountain podcast carries a dual purpose: firstly, to pay my respects to those who fell in World War 1 as today (November 11, Armistice Day) marks the anniversary of the day that war ended; secondly, to continue playing my part for the ending of the conflicts which are currently raging in Gaza, Ukraine, and other arenas of war worldwide. Since this episode was recorded, the conflict has spread to Lebanon, Iran, and other countries; Korean soldiers have joined Russian forces in Ukraine.  This podcast episode represents a stark warning that we forget history's lessons at our dire peril. It looks at THE Armistice Day of November 11, 1918 through the eyes of my historical-fiction novel 'War Pigeons: WP&Me'. The wonderful voice of narrator Rafe Beckley reads Chapter 10: 'Peace Pigeons' . This novel, written for young adults, was my attempt to celebrate continuing peace, and was originally published as a paperback on the centennial of the ending of the First World War. It follows a London family and how the war impacted their lives, Chapter 10 sees peace come at last and the declaration of the Armistice. For more information, or to receive a full copy of the audiobook, follow this link: War Pigeons 1: WP & Me by Adrian Beckingham - Audiobook - Audible.co.uk
On the day this podcast was originally recorded November 11, 2023) London saw potentially the largest peace march in British history. Ordinary people took to the streets to join other protestors gathering worldwide, to demand an end to the genocide and crimes against humanity currently taking place in Palestine at the hands of the Israeli military. This is not a war WITH Gaza but rather a war ON Gaza, because Palestine has no army, navy nor airforce to fight back. One Gazan child dies every 10 minutes under Israeli bombardments. My book for young adults is a call for peace - may my solitary attempt be clamored out by the rising tide of similar voices in every domain of human life and culture. Our very own 'Cruella' Suella - the then UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman - called the pro-Palestinian marches 'Hate Marches', totally missing the point that these people marched for peace and against acts of violence; in her similar vein of totally missing the point where this privileged politician attempted to legislate our police to remove tiny city tents from homeless people - Cruella Suella calls homelessness, "A lifestyle choice". Cruella soon lost her job, however now, a year later on 11/11/24 attempts to relieve the rising tide of homelessness is pushing numerous London councils to the brink of bankruptcy.  This episode will avoid current politics, whilst upholding the mantle of a shared humanity where compassion - and peaceful activism against the ugliness of war in all its guises - holds sway. In peace and gratitude, thank you for listening.

Nina Stopar lives and works in Slovenia. Nina won a scholarship to study and work at Trinity Art Studios as part of her Masters in Abstract Painters at the University of Ljubljana. This scholarship saw her in London during the first lockdown, a process of unanticipated isolation. Nina says this as both "unfortunate and fortunate" for so much time alone in a studio impacted her art dramatically. In this interview we discuss at length her large canvas named 'Surrender' and what surrender means to her.  Nina says, "If you do not surrender in life, there is no life, there is no art, there is no magic." We also discuss abstraction, the meaning of colors in art and life, the relationship between dance and fine arts in the work she produces, the changing role of gender identity across the generations in Slovenia - with a spotlight on her grandmother, her mother and herself - and her definition of what it means in today's world to be a fully embodied woman. Lack of resources meant this project could not repeat for 2024, fingers crossed for enough sponsorships/subscribers in 2025.
Annie' Naisalei Nanari lives in Kajiado county, Kenya. In a World Water Day (March 22) Special we talk to Annie about how global warming and four years of drought have pushed survival and daily routines to a knife edge for her community. Women cut down trees to turn them into charcoal in a desperate bid to feed their children; it is not unusual to walk from morning to evening in search of water and return with nothing. Men are often away from their families, droving their livestock in a desperate search to find somewhere where they can feed. Faith and hard work - including a well building project - offer some hope in an otherwise desperate situation, along with the rare and precious gifts of celebrations to mark special anniversaries, and rights-of-passage ceremonies. Annie's greatest love is song, and we are treated to not one but two succulent examples. You can find out more about the Maasai and help Annie's people here: https://tinyurl.com/5fsted4a

First broadcast as part of our 31Women project which broadcast a new interview with a different woman every day in March 2023 as our month long celebration of International Women's Day. Lack of resources meant this project could not repeat for 2024, fingers crossed for enough sponsorships/subscribers in 2025.
Devaki Thomas grew up in Western Canada within the social bubble of the Hare Krishna movement. Her father was a key member including being a Temple President and the man who introduced the folk music of the 60's he was immersed in to the Mantra meditation music of the Krishnas. He also was first to tour his brand of MANTRA Rock across international cities. Although in those days females members were forbidden/discouraged from playing lead instruments and leading Kirtans in the long daily rituals of song, her father used his privileged position to bend the rules and encouraged Devaki to play music and perform. Falling in love and beginning a family at a very early age, she and her musician husband fled the confines of the Krishna community life to explore the unknown outer world. They began playing at festivals and touring with their band Samsara and eventually set up and ran the Komasket Music Festival after being invited by local indigenous Okanagan people to host the event on their powwow grounds. Learn here this fascinating story plus about the fusion of music as a tool for performance and healing. To find out more about Devaki you can visit her website: www.soundandmovementsanctuary.com

02 Dec 2024Matt Follain's 'Myth To Miracle' story00:40:22

Send us a text

You just can't keep some champions down! Matt Follain was a single father and pro-fighter, martial arts journalist and even featured in some martial arts films on the big screen. He ran a busy martial arts school and cage-fight team when suddenly his life was turned upside down with a horrific incident. A car sped over him and dragged him along the street. Matt sustained life-changing injuries including the loss of a foot. This led to daily chronic pain, long term hospitalisations, and a sense of despair over the loss of his identity as a hands-on dad and martial arts instructor. Matt discusses these themes, along with how he became addicted to the opiod pharmaceuticals prescribed by his doctors. Only when he had a seizure in front of his daughter did Matt take up the challenge to halt his addiction, then discover the path to a new life where breathwork and meditation helped him to regain control of his pain and identity.

When make believe becomes make happen manifesting into real life from the power of mindset, that's magic...

In this episode our host Master Storyteller, journalist and Hollywood screenwriter Adrian Beckingham shares two true life tales from his very Indiana Jones lifestyle.

We hear about how, when an indigenous Australian man was bitten by a deadly snake, his companions sang a traditional medicine song shared across generations for thousands of years to help withdraw the poison from his system; and a man Adrian met in the Spanish Andalucian mountains who has superhuman strength because he never touches or trades in money.

Keeping the Magic real and yet to some - unbelievable. You can't do black belt moves in any artform if you wear a white belt, or haven't put in the time. Broadcast to honor the Winter Solstice in United Kingdom 2024, this TRUE STORY is about a Summer Solstice ceremony I did at Collaroy Beach Australia (honoring Winter Solstice UK) in which the aftermath reveals a fist-sized baby dragon swimming about in a rockpool then a golden-leaf Roman style laurel crown dropped by a kookaburra.

This episode was recorded live for my first two members who signed up to my Kofi-Membership (thank you both). Listen in for some of her fascinating story about life as a muso and recounting some environmental campaigns. Plus we are treated to a debut broadcast of her beautiful original song "Find Our Feathers" which is planned for her next album. From a shy young singer-songwriter throwing herself into the front line to save animals and the planet working alongside our host Adrian Beckingham at Greenpeace Australia, Justine gradually found her wings musically and developed a stage presence. Justine gained recognition including seeing some of her original songs reach giddy heights on the JJJ (Australia's national alternative radio station) indie charts and later beat tough competition to come 4th in the Emergenza Band Competition in Sydney out of about 400 acts. Significantly, her album 'A Long Way From Home' won an ARMA Award for Best Album in 2019. Listen in for a great story about life as a muso that will  leave many emergent singer-songwriters inspired.

Send us a text

What is the Voice to Parliament referendum being held in Australia on 14th October 2023? The Voice to Parliament referendum was proposed by First Nations people about the best way to achieve constitutional recognition of Indigenous people in Australia. Under the constitution, the government already has the power to make laws for Indigenous people. The voice would be a way for them to be consulted on those laws. But not all Indigenous Australians will be voting YES. In this podcast episode I share some personal stories about my dealings and interactions with Aboriginal Australian communities and individuals. Included is an interview with 87 year old Yorta Yorta Aboriginal elder Francis Firebrace interviewed in his home following the official declaration that votes had been counted and the NO vote won through.

30 Mar 202331WOMEN: Shaku Burrell - past forest dweller; Teacher; nomad - interviewed by Adrian Beckingham00:46:07

Send us a text

First broadcast as part of our 31Women project which broadcast a new interview with a different woman every day in March 2023 as our month long celebration of International Women's Day. Lack of resources meant this project could not repeat for 2024, fingers crossed for enough sponsorships/subscribers in 2025.
Shaku is originally from India but based in the UK. She has many talents, from being a Holistic Massage Therapist, to a trained Laughing Yoga teacher and an Ecstatic Dance Meditation facilitator, a corporate office worker, let alone her degree in Commerce. She was based in India caring for her elderly mother at the time of this interview. Shaku ran away from home at a young age on a midnight train to Goa. She found lasting love in a slightly older Englishman, an ex-army officer and together they adopted a hippie lifestyle, of sacred Sadhus - travelling around the temples barefoot, dressed only in orange robes, sleeping in the wild forests, bathing in rivers for almost 6 years. The many strangers they met often taunted her as a prostitute because she was a young Indian girl accompanying a white man - but far from it, they soon married and would remain together for the remainder of his life. Shaku says, "Every day was its own new story". They walked the Himalayan mountains by night to cross the border into Nepal, where Shaku found a job teaching English to young children in a Christian school. Their next adventure was to visit her husband's country, England, where they purchased an old VW campervan with plans to drive it from London across western Europe, to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan into India and finally reach Kathmandu. In no rush, many stories unfolded, until one night tragedy struck when her husband went missing, to later be found as the victim of a terrible road accident. Bereft, Shaku returned to London where she took up employment as a nanny. "What gave me strength was having lived that life in India as a Sadhu, a simplistic lifestyle learning to let go." Hear more about Shaku in this interview as she takes us through some of her many adventures. You can connect with Shaku to reenergise via her healthy Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/LookAfterMyself/
