22 Feb 2021 | Juno (2007) and Quigley (2003) | 01:17:15
Quigley (2003) is a straight-to-DVD Christian movie where Gary Busey dies in a car wreck and is cast out of heaven as a fluffy pomeranian AKA the titular Quigley. It is essentially the same movie as the classic 2007 twee teen pregnancy dramedy Juno. That's it. That's the episode. BONUS: we find out what Bob REALLY thinks of newborns. Spoiler alert! He's not a fan! It's our 69th episode! NICE. And to celebrate, we are continuing our October format of having a guest on the pod to talk about their favorite scary movie! This week, we are talking about John Carpenter's The Thing with local hot sauce maker, Lee Boyes, who also is a big part of the team for the local Halloween haunt, Dark, that is happening this month right here in Edmonton. 10 Jan 2022 | Chungking Express (1994) and Requiem for a Vampire (1971) | 00:55:07
This episode is for the true cinephiles! We watch Wong Kar-Wai's classic dyad of romance, Chungking Express, and we find that it is the same movie as Jean Rollo's eurotrash vampire orgy film, Requiem for a Vampire. Both of these movies are not for everyone, but we had fun with them! Cloons shooting guns, you love to see it! We also talk about podcast catchphrases, avant-garde storytelling, and puppies! It's our Clint Eastwood Spectacular episode where we watch one of Clint Eastwood's great films (the Oscar-winning Unforgiven) and one of his bad films (The Mule) and we find that they are the same film in many ways. If you like Clint Eastwood, this is the episode for you. Get amped, Clint stans. It's a Clint-isode! 04 Oct 2021 | Spooky Month: Alien (1979) with Sylvia Douglas | 01:18:08
BOO! It's the first week of October AKA Spooky Month, and thus begins our annual tradition of talking with a guest about an iconic scary movie! This week we are chatting with local shopkeep Sylvia Douglas, one of the owners of the Edmonton comics and pop culture store "Rolling Tales", which opened less than a month ago here in town. She is also a filmmaker and a dungeon master, so there is a lot to talk about. Her favorite movie is Ridley Scott's Alien! It's a great conversation about all things spooky and nerdy! 24 May 2021 | Sherlock Jr. (1924) and Sex and the City 2 (2010) | 01:31:43
In this episode we tackle the 45-minute Buster Keaton silent film masterpiece Sherlock Jr., and find that it contains a lot of the same elements as the terribly misguided sequel Sex and the City 2, a film that finds the fashionable foursome at their culturally insenstive worst in Abu Dhabi of all places. Sherlock Jr. is an amazing film - that you can watch free on YouTube - but we find that we can't turn away from discussing the trainwreck that is SatC2 (a.k.a. "Deucey-Sex"). 10 May 2021 | Nomadland (2020) and Mortal Kombat (2021) | 01:17:41
We're back to our regular format after some fun anniversary episodes. This time we are tackling the recent best picture winner at the Oscars, Chloe Zhao's quasi-documentary movie about the van dwelling subculture of America, and the recent reboot of the Mortal Kombat film franchise. We share our hot takes about how Nomadland is pretty much a dramatic Borat, talk about playing the video game Mortal Kombat in the 90s, and get distracted talkin' about poopin' in a bucket. As one does. FINISH HIM! And by "him", we mean, this episode. We also talk about episodic storytelling, watching Zack Snyder's Justice League WITH COMMERCIALS, the rumble pak, and make some fun plans for this upcoming year in podcasting! 24 Jun 2020 | 12 Angry Men (1957) and The Baby-Sitters Club (1995) | 01:08:35
The pod! The pod! The center of the cast! Hey, we’re back to our regularly scheduled programming, and we have a real good episode this week! In this episode we cover Sidney Lumet’s jury room drama 12 Angry Men, and we find out that it is the same as the mid-90’s feature film adaptation of The Baby-Sitter’s Club. As an added bonus, in the last half of the episode we go through every one of the eponymous angry men and figure out which juror most closely resembles which baby sitter! Riveting stuff! 07 Sep 2020 | Rom-Com Pod-Romp! Live From The Backyard! | 01:23:42
We take a break from our typical format, and record a special episode in Mike's backyard - complete with neighbourhood ambiance. Most importantly though, we get down to brass tacks about Bob's excessive romantic comedy viewing habits. We talk about what rom-coms Bob has watched during the pandemic (spoiler: a friggen lot), we introduce a new segment "Is it a Rom-Com?", plus Mike quizzes Bob on his rom-com knowledge! 01 Jun 2021 | The Favourite (2018) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) | 01:19:22
In our latest epi, we're talkin' 'bout the latest feature films from ya boi Yorgy and and ya gurl Patty, the darkly hilarious The Favourite and the unbelievably bad Wonder Woman 1984, respectively. They are two period pieces about lonely people thirstin' for power wearing silly costumes. As we say, "it's our most chaotic episode yet!" *WINK* We also talk about steak, weed, tumbling, and of course, Jar Jar Binks. Happy New Year, Kanines! Mike and Bob take a break from talking about movies and spend an entire epi talking about video games. We find that The Last of Us - the "Citizen Kane of video games" (not our words) - is the same as one of the worst games ever made, the famously terrible Superman 64. 24 Jan 2022 | When Harry Met Sally (1989) and Gemini Man (2019) | 00:50:22
I'll have what she's having, etc. etc. In this episode we tackle what Bob and Mike think is the greatest rom com ever made - When Harry Met Sally (natch) - and compare it to a pretty bad special effects showcase starring two (!) Will Smiths: Gemini Man! As you all know, Bob loves romcoms so this is a very exciting episode for him. We also talk about the romcom queen Meg Ryan (where is she now?), reading books for a change, special effects, and of course, Harry Connick Jr., as we always do! 24 Aug 2020 | Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) and Ready Player One (2018) - Part 2, with David Berry, author of On Nostalgia | 00:46:01
This is an episode of firsts! It's our first two-parter episode, and it's our first guest! Please give a big generous Kanine welcome to David Berry, the author of "On Nostalgia", a wonderful little book that humorously tackles the subject of nostalgia - what it is, what it was, why we feel it, and is that feeling a good thing or a bad thing... or both? We're taking a break from our usual format to focus on just one movie. GUMP. That's right, we're talking Forrest Gump. We delve into the movie's politics, the soundtrack, the nostalgia, the cynicism, the darkness, the 90s, the awards... everything GUMP. Get into it, Kanines! It's time to get gump'd! 31 Aug 2020 | The Godfather (1972) and The Love Guru (2008) | 01:24:41
In this epi, we watch The Godfather, one of the greatest achievements in American film history, and we compare it to The Love Guru, Mike Myer's cinematic fall from grace. What do these films have in common? Lots! Mostly themed around cultural stereotyping (natch). Plus, Mike regales Bob with movie theatre horror stories, we talk about 1999 (one of the best movie years), and we introduce a new segment: Movie Corner, where we talk about - you guessed it - movies! 06 Jul 2021 | Parasite (2019) and Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) with Julia Grochowski | 01:25:41
Hello there! We bring back special guest Julia Grochowski to talk about two films: Bong Joon-Ho's scathing dark comedy masterpiece about late stage capitalism, Parasite, and George Lucas's Jar Jar Binks vehicle, Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Julia is not only a dyed-in-the-wool cinephile, but she ALSO has a Wookiepedic knowledge of all things Star Wars, so she is the perfect guest to get down to brass tacks about the prequel trilogy and how it is the same movie as the recent historic Oscar winner. And we actually stay on topic for the entire episode! Weesa thinken yousa liken this episode, bombad! 05 Apr 2021 | Point Break (1991) and Tom and Jerry: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2017) | 01:18:10
In this episode we find that the surfing action thriller Point Break is somehow the same as Tom and Jerry: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the clumsily titled straight-to-video nostalgia mashup that no one wanted. We loved Point Break, it's a "ride". We fell asleep during the Tom and Jerry movie. It's a bore. We also talk about the new Space Jam movie, and we try and come up with our own nostalgia-driven mashup movies. It's our most existential episode ever! 08 Jul 2020 | Stalker (1979) and Yoga Hosers (2016) | 00:59:15
In this episode we really "get in the zone". What do Andrei Tarkovsky's nearly 4 hour long epic journey into the science fiction post-apocalyptic wasteland and Kevin Smith's nepotistic sausage-fest journey into the wintry wasteland of Winnipeg have in common? A lot, apparently. We also figure out a name for our fans, shill some (fake) merch, and play "When Did They Poop?" where we figure out when the characters in the movies used the bathroom. #afamilyaffair Don't forget to use the promo code "FromJustinToKane"! 22 Feb 2022 | Speed (1994) and Meet the Spartans (2008) | 01:13:31
Kanines! We did it, we watched probably the worst movie we have seen yet. We also watch the 1994 bus-based action movie Speed, which rocks! We manage to find a bunch of "samesies," as always. We also talk about a conspiracy theory involving Steven Soderberg which is actually pretty interesting (and dumb). Bob also punches up Meet the Spartans. 09 Aug 2021 | Scott Pilgrim vs the World (2010) and Mac and Me (1988) | 01:05:34
After a weeklong hiatus, we tackle the cult comic book adaptation, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and compare it to the blatant E.T. ripoff, Mac and Me, two movies that Mike has nostalgic feelings for. Also worth noting that Bob is really hungover for this episode, which adds a certain flair to the proceedings. We also talk about MST3K, Quentin Tarantino and the city of Toronto. 11 May 2020 | Citizen Kane (1941) and From Justin to Kelly (2003) | 01:06:49
In this, our very first episode, we explore the two films that gave our podcast it’s name: Orson Welles’ masterpiece Citizen Kane (1941) and From Justin to Kelly (2003), “the American Idol movie”. We find an alarming number of similarities between the two films - for example, both are set in Florida, both include characters with political ambitions, and are equally “musicals”. By the end of the episode, we agree that Citizen Kane and From Justin to Kelly are pretty much the same movie! And just a disclaimer: for this first episode, our audio quality is just okay! Don’t worry, the following episodes sound much nicer. Also, Mike had a cold for this episode so his voice sounds cracklier than usual! 13 Apr 2021 | Spirited Away (2001) and Freddy Got Fingered (2001) | 01:31:34
It's Freddy Got Fingered's 20th Anniversary! To celebrate, we spend over an hour talking about this post-modern surrealist masterpiece that is also considered one of the worst American movies ever. Mike loves FGF and Tom Green and has a lot to say about this movie, and Bob was not a fan, so it makes for an interesting and long conversation about the merits of one of the most polarizing comedies of the 21st century. Oh, and the other movie - the good movie - is Spirited Away, Hayao Miyazaki's animated coming-of-age masterpiece. We also talk about whether we prefer subs or dubs, Mike shares the story of when he saw the Japanese Clockwork Orange musical, and Bob regales us with his top Studio Ghibli picks. 01 Mar 2021 | Saturday Night Fever (1977) and Attack Force (2006) | 01:23:32
In this episode, we are proposing that the cinematic celebration of disco dancing, Saturday Night Fever, is the same movie as the Steven Seagal crapfest, the generically-titled Attack Force. And We say this every week, but this might be the WORST movie we have watched so far. We also delve into Steven Seagal's career at large, we talk about Scientology, and Mike goes into detail about one of his best birthdays - one which ended with a serious case of gurgle-butt. 17 Jun 2020 | Do The Right Thing (1989) and The Happening (2008) | 01:04:06
We resume after a two week hiatus, having taken some time off to focus on current events, and we decided to move this episode up the list because of how relevant it is to what is going on. In this episode we talk about Spike Lee’s second feature film, the incredibly important Do the Right Thing (1989), and we find how it is the same as M. Night Shyamalan’s 2008 mass hysteria the-plants-are-trying-to-kill-us B-movie The Happening. We recorded this episode more than a year ago and could not predict how relevant this episode would one day be, that we would be living in a time of mass hysteria over a contagious virus AND worldwide police brutality protests. What a time to be alive! In the opening to the episode we talk about what’s going on in the world a little bit, and also briefly discuss Spike Lee’s new film Da 5 Bloods, which everyone should check out. We believe Black Lives Matter and we support the movement. In lieu of our own social medias, here are some links to check out. 10 Aug 2020 | Toy Story 4 (2019) and Loqueesha (2019) | 01:08:31
In probably one of the more bizarre pair-ups, Mike and Bob watch Pixar's most recent sentient plaything sequel, Toy Story 4, and compare it to the trainwreck that is 2019's "comedy" Loqueesha, a film that we decide is, quite frankly, very racist. As always, there are actually quite a few parallels between the two films, and it makes for an interesting discussion that covers a range of topics including comedic intent, colonialism, the patriarchy, and the democratization of film in the modern age. What a duo of films! 2019 was quite the year!
28 Sep 2021 | Minisode: Happy Birthday Mike (and Hearts in Atlantis) | 00:31:36
It's Mike's special day and we are celebrating by riffing about bullshit for a half hour (it's still mostly about movies though). We talk about celebrity birthdays, the movie "Hearts in Atlantis" - which turns 20 today! - the PT Anderson movie trailer for "Licorice Pizza", and the "A Star is Born" quadrilogy (AKA "A Star is Fourn"). We also talk about sad birthday parties, touching pigs, being cool in junior high, Weird Al Yankovic, and of course, "The Human Centipede". Happy Birthday Mike!

This week, we talk with our good friend Julia about the French body-horror film Raw, wherein a bout of cannibalism breaks out at a veterinary school. Julia is currently pre-vet, loves horror films and is a vegan, so she is the perfect guest for this epi. 29 Mar 2021 | Seven Samurai (1954) and Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) - Part 2 | 00:53:15
Part two of our epic dissection of Seven Samurai and Zack Snyder's Justice League is here. In this episode we really break down the similarities between these two films that are 3.5+ hours in length with a square aspect ratio, about a team being assembled, and are (now) both in black and white. We also play a fun little game where we figure out which Justice League member is which of the (titular) Seven Samurai. 25 May 2020 | Akira (1988) and A Talking Cat!?! (2013) | 00:56:53
In this episode, we compare the brilliant 1988 anime film Akira, and A Talking Cat!?! (2013), a children’s film that was directed by a man who is more known for his softcore porn films. Also: the cat is voiced by Eric Roberts. Through discussing the similarities between the two films, we discover that they are both about god-like figures with psychic powers, and both films are existential meditations on world war two that take place in a Shakespearean post-apocalyptic techno-dystopia. It's true! It's our tenth episode! To celebrate ten episodes, we are releasing our most controversial episode yet! Recorded in early January of this year (pre-lockdown), Mike and Bob make the bold assertion that 2019's Cats is a good movie. And we are comparing it to the second Star Wars movie ever released, which we are saying is the bad movie... And no we're not talking about Empire Strikes Back. It's the Star Wars Holiday Special! And yes, we realize this is the second episode in a row where we talk about a Christmas movie... but hey, it's Christmas in July! 01 Jul 2020 | Shrek (2001) and Suicide Squad (2016) | 00:47:40
In this episode we tackle the Dreamworks animation sensation Shrek (2001), and stack it up with 2016's DC Universe fail-son Suicide Squad, and SPOILER ALERT we find that these movies are scarily similar. If you know anything about Mike, you know he has a deep love of Shrek, so this episode was a real treat. We also try out our best Shrek impressions, we figure out which Shrek character is which Suicide Squad member, and we talk about how we COULD HAVE invented Youtube and Grand Theft Auto... but we were too busy at the time. Long live the new flesh! We watch the David Cronenberg body-horror cult classic where people put Betamax tapes in their tummies, and compare it to the brilliantly entertaining fail-son action film, Samurai Cop. Both of these movies are a lot of fun for different reasons, and both get the Bob L'Heureux Seal of Approval. Go forth and watch, Kanines! 01 Feb 2021 | Green Book (2018) and The Lawnmower Man (1992) | 01:10:16
In this episode we find that the cheesy VR thriller Lawnmower Man is the same movie as the controversial yet bland story about friendship and race in America, Green Book. Mike was surprised that Green Book was better than he expected, and Bob was surprised that Lawnmower Man was much much worse than he expected. This is a really fun episode, very very silly, you are really going to enjoy it. Mike used to do karate (up to orange belt) and Bob used to do ballet, so we are kinda experts. But of course, the episode must include the usual business.... and this time we are watching Robert Downey Sr.'s wild satire Putney Swope, and we compare it to the J Lo rom-com from 2022 about a pop star that marries a regular guy! Fred Ott's Sneeze, the six-second-long Thomas Edison produced film that features his colleague sneezing is put up against Logan Paul's execrable feature film vehicle (ho ho), Airplane Mode. Can we find that a six second film and a full length movie are the same? You'd be fools to doubt us, is all I will say. We're back to our usual format and this week we are comparing two titans of their medium: the Beatles and Christopher Nolan. We take on the flippin' Beatles' bizarre day-in-the-life masterpiece Hard Day's Night and we find that it is very similar to Chris Nolan's epic misfire Tenet, a film so nice you have to see it twice (to understand it at all). 17 May 2021 | Sound of Metal (2020) and Lady Terminator (1989) | 01:01:51
It's our 50th episode! Wow! What a milestone! And we're back with another 2020 best picture nominee, The Sound of Metal, a film Mike and Bob both thought was great and deserved best picture. What didn't deserve best picture though, was the fun but trashy, nudity-filled Indonesian cult classic Lady Terminator, a straight up rip-off of the first Terminator film but... you know, the Lady version. We find that these films are the same film etc. etc. You know how it be! We also spend quite a lot of time talking about donuts. Don't worry, it's in context. Enjoy! 15 Jul 2020 | 8 1/2 (1963) and Jaws 3-D (1983) | 01:15:31
Hey Kanines! We're back! In this episode, we watch the iconic and surreal semi-autobiographical journey into Frederico Fellini's navel, 8 1/2, and discover that it is extremely similar to the nautical-horror cash-in sequel Jaws 3-D, a film that we viewed in but two of those three dimensions. That's right, Barbara the Shark is back in yet another Jaws movie! We also share our font knowledge, start another pod beef, and riff out the plot to a meta sci-fi horror masterpiece about a shark in outer space. 11 Jan 2021 | Side-Pod: "When Did They Poop? - Episode 1" | 00:48:49
In episode 7 of "From Justin to Kane", Mike and Bob made up a fake podcast called "When Did They Poop?" where they tried to figure out when characters would have used the bathroom during a film. In a fun twist of format, Mike and Bob made good on the promise to record an episode of WDTP? and thus here is a full episode where they try and figure out when would characters have used the bathroom during some of the films covered in the last thirty episodes of the From Justin to Kane podcast. Appropriately so, we spend most of our time NOT talking about this meta-horror movie and instead talk about our very own podcast on our own podcast- as meta as it gets. 21 Jun 2021 | Psycho (1960) and Psycho (1998) | 01:44:06

Two films with the same name, the same script, the same shot list, the same locations, the list goes on and on. In our quickest turnaround yet, we recorded this episode two days after the movie came out! We are, er, celebrating the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League by doing an extra long episode! So long that we split it into two episodes! But of course, we gotta stick to format, so we are saying that Zack Snyder's Justice League is the same movie as Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, one of the greatest films of all time. In this episode we riff ourselves into oblivion, and then finally get down to contextualizing the films. In a fun twist on our classic formula, we swap out movies for food. In this episode, we compare Dairy Queen's classic ice cream cake with a strawberry rhubarb pie that Bob found at a local grocery store. We explore the history of desserts in general and find the similarities between these two tasty treats. Was this just an excuse to eat cake and pie? Of course! Keep your fork, Kanines! There's pie! (and cake!) 25 Jan 2021 | The Third Man (1949) and Tomb Raider (2018) | 01:04:08
We're back with yet another Orson Welles-themed episode, this time focusing on Welles' dynamic (but short-lived) appearance in the wonderful noir-comedy The Third Man. In classic form, we find that this classic of British cinema is exactly the same as 2018's yawn of a video game adaptation, Tomb Raider. We also talk about Bob's top five movie crushes, other video game adaptations, and we venture into the bizarre world of online Sonic the Hedgehog fandom. Strap in Kanines, it gets weird! 03 May 2021 | First Anniversary Episode! Citizen Kane Turns 80! | 01:16:40
This episode marks one full year of our podcast! We did it! And we couldn't have done it without all you Kanines! We look back on the year that was, and reflect on all we have accomplished on the pod. 22 Jul 2020 | Fitzcarraldo (1982) and Christmas in Wonderland (2007) | 00:56:34
Kanines! Riddle me this: what do an opera house in the middle of the Amazon and West Edmonton Mall have in common? Spoiler alert: LOTS. In this episode we watch Werner Herzog's boat-centric adventure film Fitzcarraldo, and compare it to the semi-obscure, semi-straight-to-video holiday stinker Christmas in Wonderland - a movie interesting only because it was filmed right here in our home city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In fact, Mike worked on the movie, as a production assistant, and regales Bob with a bevy of stories from the set of this bargain bin Home Alone set in what is no longer the world's biggest mall. It's a wild episode! Art by Josh Holinaty: http://www.holinaty.com Music by Doug Hoyer: http://www.doughoyer.com
20 Dec 2021 | Office Holiday Party AKA From Justin to Candy Kane | 00:41:57
It's the annual holiday party! We're all gathering at the big office we have rented out and we are hanging out and chatting about movies, real loosey-goosey like. There are snacks (Timbiebs), drinks (liquified Timbiebs) and music in the background (not Biebs, thankfully). We chat about everything from vaccines to Timbiebs, but mostly movies. Enjoy and happy holidays! 14 Jun 2021 | La Jetee (1962) and Wild Mountain Thyme (2020) | 01:00:31
We're back after a week's hiatus with this, our 53rd (!) episode. In this one, we are talking about a stone-cold film school classic, the often imitated but never replicated, 28-minute French New Wave sci-fi classic La Jetee! It's the film that inspired 12 Monkeys (as in, it inspired the Terry Gilliam movie, not just, like, a dozen monkeys were inspired. Come on man.) Also, in an unprecedented turn for the dull, we talk about a recent "rom-com" called Wild Mountain Thyme, a recent film that has an ending so dumb that it is instantly iconic. You will not BEE-lieve your ears! We also talk about farting wombats, as well as Bob's background in ballet! Lap it up, Kanines! 12 Jul 2021 | Solaris (2002) and Reign of Fire (2002) | 01:00:59
Sad people in outer space and bald guys fighting dragons! 2002 was a wild year for film. We cover the Steven Soderbergh remake of Solaris, not the Tarkovsky original in this episode. So if you are a Tarkovsky-head, this episode ain't for you! (Actually that's not true, we talk about the original quite a bit). And Reign of Fire is hilarious because it takes place in a dark and scary 2020 - however, I think if I had my choice, I'd take the dragons! But that's just me. In the back nine of the episode we pretty much just talk about Matthew McConaughey. Bob's a fan! 23 Nov 2020 | Her (2013) and Ghoulies 3: Ghoulies Go To College (1991) | 01:31:18
In this episode we finally answer the question "what do a movie about a guy in love with his computer and a movie about three toilet goblins have in common"? Quite a lot apparently. They seem to pretty much be the same movie as far as we can tell. Spike Jones' beautiful computer-boinking Her goes head to head with the third entry in the horror-comedy franchise Ghoulies, and there is a wild connection we found between these films that is nigh unbelievable. Plus: bonus meta-segment "Amazon Corner" where we try and track down a physical copy of the elusive film Robot Jox! 21 Dec 2020 | Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) and Robot Jox (1990) | 01:03:18
It's our holiday special episode! We finally tracked down a way to watch the sci-fi cult classic Robot Jox, and we are comparing to the holiday stop-motion classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It's RUDOLPH JOX! Aside from the usual finding that both movies are virtually identical, we also talk about how Santa is kind of a jerk, talk about holiday movie picks for the upcoming week. We hope you all have a safe and healthy holiday season, from Mike and Bob at From Justin to Kane! Klaatu verata nikto! This week we are joined by special guest, filmmaker and friend Lindsay Robinson! Lindsay is an Edmontonian filmmaker, currently stationed in Berlin, who has directed a horror short called Central Dental - which you can watch online right now! 30 Aug 2021 | Big (1988) and Fateful Findings (2013) | 01:30:28
Merry Breensmas! We cover our first Breen film on the pod! And what a film it is. Fateful Findings is a twisted cult classic of the so-bad-it's-good variety, and we are glad to have seen our first Breen. And it is perhaps fateful that we find that it is the same as the whimsical pedo fantasia, Big, directed by the late Penny Marshall. We also talk about why the Sixth Sense is a dumb title, the nature of time in film, and what makes a film "Lynchian". What can we say? We're back on our bullshit! 25 Oct 2021 | Spooky Month: Child's Play 2 (1990) with Omar Mouallem | 01:21:15
Sorry Jack, From Justin to Kane is back! On this episode, our final episode of the month wherein we talk with a guest about a horror film of choice, we are joined by filmmaker and author Omar Mouallem. Omar recently released a hit book, "Praying to the West: How Muslims Shaped the Americas," and a movie, "The Last Baron" (which is about a regional burger chain with a very interesting backstory. Omar has some thoughts on Child's Play 2, the better-than-the-first sequel about the murdering doll. He also brings on his horror buff daughter, who is 4 years old and loves the Chucky movie. It's incredibly adorable! 14 Dec 2020 | Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and If The Shoe Fits (1990) | 01:10:41
In this episode, we compare (arguably) the best Wes Anderson movie, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and find that it is very similar to the lazy made-for-TV Cinderella story, If The Shoe Fits. We also do a recap on the career of Jennifer Grey (including some sweet hot goss), we talk about why Wes Anderson is one of the best comedy film directors ever, and we also talk about, like, the nature of time, man. It's, like, a deep epi. 26 Apr 2021 | The First Annual Kanie Awards! | 01:10:46
We celebrate our first year of existence as a podcast by hosting an award show wherein we give awards to the movies that made us laugh, cry, snore, sigh, make pee-pee and poo-poo, etc. etc. It's a celebration of cinema - From Justin to Kane style! We give out fake awards to the movies that we watched over the last year! So no 2020 Oscar winners here! Just good and bad movies, old and new! Bob gets drunk, Mike gets annoyed, we get lost so far up our own asses in our most chaotic episode yet. 12 Oct 2020 | Spooky Month: House of the Dead (2003) with Luke and Golshan | 01:31:10
In this episode we watch Uwe Boll's hilariously bad adaptation of the Sega arcade series House of the Dead, with two fans of the film: Luke and Golshan from the basketball podcast "Hoop Fan in a Frozen Land". We really get in deep about the career of German director Uwe Boll, and Golshan regales us with a story about the time he met Dr. Boll. We also talk about Luke and Golshan's favorite horror films, their favorite basketball films, video game adaptations, Dave Foley's penis, and we really get into an extended tangent about the Ernest P. Worrell films. It's another spooktacular episode, thanks to our guests! 18 May 2020 | Vertigo (1958) and Xanadu (1980) | 00:48:58
In our second episode, we talk about the OTHER film that is often considered the greatest film of all time: Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958). And we talk about the OTHER movie that takes place in Xanadu: the post-disco rollerskate Electric Light Orchestra musical called, well, Xanadu (1980). Do we find that both of these films are pretty similar? You’ll have to listen to find out! (spoiler alert: we do). 14 Sep 2020 | The Farewell (2019) and Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1987) | 01:27:33
Our most difficult - and obscure - pair up yet! We watch Lulu Wang's 2019 tribute to her dying grandmother, The Farewell, and (respectfully) find that it is (mostly) the same movie as Andy Sidaris's bonkers action boobsterpiece, Hard Ticket to Hawaii - considered by many to be the #1 B-movie of all time. We also talk about what it takes to make a dinosaur theme park movie, as well as building a treehouse out of human bones (don't worry it makes sense in context). 08 Mar 2021 | Taken (2008) and Runaway Bride (1999) | 01:15:32
America's Sweetheart, Julia Roberts, reunites with silver fox Richard Gere for an inferior film, Runaway Bride. We find that it is pretty much the same movie as the 2008 "actioner" Taken, starring Ireland's Sweetheart Liam Neeson, a movie for "basic daddies". We also talk about how great T9 texting was, we have another segment of PODBEEF where we try and start beef with other more popular podcasts, and we reveal what our particular sets of skills are. 17 Aug 2020 | Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) and Ready Player One (2018) - Part 1 | 01:17:15
The first FJ2K episode recorded during the pandemic, and to celebrate this nightmarish new world we live in, we compare two very recent movies: the elegantly horny French masterpiece Portrait of a Lady on Fire - that just came out on digital platforms right as the pandemic hit North America - and the also horny (but for pop culture) Ready Player One, directed by none other than Steven Spielberg, one of the living legends of American cinema! This is a real doozy of an epi! The male gaze vs. the female gaze! Finally they battle it out! Also, stay tuned for next week's episode where we have a special guest on to talk about both of these films and their shared themes!
