01 Nov 2022Secret Shopper Scams - Special Release of "The TEA" podcast by Hailey Windham00:28:03

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Two weeks ago, Hailey Windham (Financial Crimes Investigations Officer for SAFE Federal Credit Union) joined Fraudology to talk about the innovative programs she has implemented to spread fraud & scam awareness & training within her organization and community. And today, you get to hear a live example of one of the most successful programs she started: An internal podcast for SAFE Federal Credit Union employees called "The TEA" (TEA = Training, Education & Awareness)

  • It's one thing to hear ABOUT something, it's another to hear an actual example; hopefully this episode helps inspire you to find creative ways to educate others in your company about the importance of scams targeting your customers/members and your organization
  • You'll also learn how social engineering scams targetting consumers under the guise of "Secret Shopper programs" operate; as well as the experience for the victim, the retailer (via gift card purchases), as well as the experience/impact on the consumers' financial institution.

16 Feb 2023Identifying Online Fraud Before it Happens w/ Matt Vega & Sid Shah @ Novo.co00:50:18

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of Fraudology, host Karisse Hendrick continues the conversation (started on episode 169) by Matt Vega, Head of Fraud Strategy and Sidharth Shah, Sr. Product Manager, both at Novo.co, a fintech that provides financial products to start-ups & SMBs. In this episode, Matt & Sid share their experiences with data-driven vendor selection, the challenges of tech integration, and the critical importance of balancing fraud prevention and customer experience in the fintech space.

They also delve into cutting-edge technologies to ensure a positive & frictionless customer experience, by utilizing behavioral biometrics and more insights into the overall customer journey, rather than only taking a snapshot of a customer's actions at the time an action is concluded (at log-in, account creation, "check out", time of transfer, etc.) By having the full picture of the actions a user takes across their platform, they are able to provide a seamless experience to the vast majority of their users; small business customers who need access to their funds quickly. They also introduce the concept of "trip wires" & "land mines" in different areas across their platform triggered by risky, anomalous actions to stop bad actors.

Sid also introduces the importance of customer empathy in successful fraud prevention; and the impact this focus can have not only on ensuring less friction but also on building customer trust & loyalty to your brand. Overall, they stress the need to view people as people, not just customers, and how the right amount of friction can actually make users feel safer.

03 Aug 2023Fraud News: No KYC Credit Card- What Could Go Wrong? | Chinese Scammers Hiring Domain Experts | Fraudsters Copying Fraud-Fighters01:00:46

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of Fraudology, Karisse highlights 3 fraud stories that you will want to be aware of. -Either for awareness, or possibly for a bit of "fraud nerd" comic relief.

First starting out with why the promised episode of an interview with a "special guest", Karisse's daughter has been replaced with an episode of Fraud News for this week. But, this episode WILL be coming soon to Fraudology, where Karisse's teenager will share her own experiences as a "fraud-fighter's daughter, the best advice her mom has given about internet safety, and she'll answer questions submitted by Fraudology listeners (and some of their kids!).

This week, the news was a mix of terrifying or puzzling revelations about professional cybercrime rings, and a new Visa card that will most likely be attractive to them. But, for the 1st story, which was first shared in the weekly newsletter published by Frank McKenna, of FrankonFraud.com, was enough for Karisse to bring back a popular segment from the past. "What The Fraud?!"

From how Chinese Scammers are hiring creative thinkers to design new scam MOs, to the newest Visa Card marketing itself as a "No KYC Visa card" (Is this Legal? Will it Last?), and a Celebrity Plastic Surgeon in Beverly Hills is hit with a two-fer: The "old" data breach + financial fraud trick. -You'll hear highlights of each article, along with thoughts, questions, and additional commentary from a fraud expert; She'll also share why these are stories for online fraud-fighters to be aware of.

Everyone has a week or two where the stress of it all is too much. Karisse has had one of those weeks. So, this is a shorter episode than usual. But, in the spirit of "Halloween" (where it's celebrated), she provides one of her favorite analogies for how online companies should approach fraud.

08 Jun 2023Why Aren't You Measuring False Declines? Insult rates - Pt.100:40:11

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

The 1st Annual Fraudology Benchmarking Survey Report is going to be launched very soon! And Karisse thought that one particular section of the report needs to be talked about, even before the report is published. And that is: The results of the questions surrounding false declines/insult rates

In this episode, Karisse will provide a deep dive into:

  • Why false positives are difficult, but critical to measure
  • The industry's shocking (but not necessarily surprising) answers about measuring false declines, and how they measure them
  • Why having an industry average of false declines is a terrible idea; but measuring them internally is necessary
  • Why false declines (especially in the e-commerce sector) have risen by a large margin over the last 12-18 months
  • The true cost & impact of each false decline, and why that should matter to you and your organization

It seems like this topic is not discussed enough, or in enough detail for newer fraud leaders to understand why you can never assume that all transactions or accounts that your system or analysts are canceling are true 3rd party fraud. (And let's be honest, does your current provider want to help you identify your insult rate?) But, the cost of not measuring, analyzing, and implementing continual fraud system & process improvements to reduce the number of good customers you are essentially referring to your competitors for life, is too high to ignore.

Next week's Thursday episode, Karisse will talk about the HOW. Now that you know it's critical not allow "perfect to be the enemy of the good" when it comes to measuring false declines, and you've heard how the bulk of the industry is measuring them now, Karisse will share a handful of innovative ways that some enterprise merchants have created a productized way to measure false positives, with little manual effort.

03 Oct 2023Viral Pop Culture Moments: The Ripple Effect on Online Fraud & Reselling00:36:28

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Viral pop culture moments often happen unexpectedly, and can have unpredictable side effects. Last week we were reminded of this when a pop star's attendance at an American football game prompted a popular athletic brand to sell out of the style of shoes she wore to the game. And, sales of the jersey with her suspected boyfriend's name & jersey number shot up over 400% sales from the week before.

In this solo episode of Fraudology, host Karisse Hendrick explains what these pop culture moments have to do with Fraudology as she delves into the fascinating world of international reselling and its impact on online fraud. From the rise of cross-border shipping and payments to the influence of social media and viral trends, she explores how certain items can become lucrative when sold on secondary marketplaces and/or in different geographical regions.

Karisse also shares stories and insights from her experience in fraud prevention, discussing the some of the (often unknown) challenges faced by retailers, and the importance of adapting systems to evolving customer behavior and trends. Tune in to discover how companies can navigate reselling, prevent fraud, and stay ahead of unexpected trends.

25 Aug 2022Too many bots, committing too many fraud crimes00:37:33

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Last week, the online publication ARS Technica published an article covering recent fraud claims from debit cardholders and small online merchants. Based on their research, it became fairly clear that a large number of debit cards issued by at least one major bank had been compromised. And based on the merchant accounts, those cards were being actively tested to create a list of valid card numbers. Given some of the details in the article, it became clear to fraud experts (Karisse included) that this was a scripted attack. Karisse will talk about this specific instance, what can be learned, and what can/should be done by all applicable parties in the CNP eco-system.

This story is just one public example of a trend growing rapidly & anecdotally in conversations Karisse has with Top enterprise online companies. Scripted attacks (aka- bots) are growing in size and capabilities faster than ever before. Karisse will share one of the major reasons why she thinks that is (besides the increased processing power of computer systems), and also lists the type of bots that anti-fraud and Trust & Safety teams should be aware of, and what signs of bots to watch out for. Even if your business hasn't been a target of these bots in the past, that doesn't mean your company will be safe in the future.

25 Oct 2022The New Face(s) of Account Takeovers (ATOs) w/ Mike Lewis and Shawn Colpitts01:00:04

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Account takeover is a familiar threat to all businesses that encourage customers to establish online accounts. Its advent enabled fraudsters to operate with impunity once they had illegally obtained data to access someone’s account.

Over the years, fraud pros have come up with different ways to identify and stop ATOs. But, as with other types of attacks, fraudsters constantly alter their tactics and innovate, finding new ways to leverage old attacks. In this replay of a popular panel session for the CNP Virtual Summit Series, moderated by Karisse, Mike Lewis (Head of Engineering & ML for Risk at Square), and Shawn Colpitts (Senior Fraud Investigator for Just Eat Takeaway) will share the most recent developments that have changed the way bad actors are accessing, using and monetizing online customer accounts.

These experts shared so much in less than an hour, from how ATOs attack methods have changed in the last few years, some of the reasons why they're scaling so quickly, along with innovative detection & prevention methods from additional layers of technology to process adaptations, to advanced Machine Learning algorithms. Additionally, Mike introduces the term "Targeted friction" as a way to only apply friction in the cases of outliers, instead of an entire group of customers.

06 Jun 2023Episode #200! Karisse Answers Your Fraudology Questions00:52:24

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

This is the 200th episode of Fraudology! So, we decided to do something a little bit different. Instead of Karisse interviewing an awesome fraud-fighter, SHE'S in the "hot seat"!

Karisse asked her friend, podcast producer, and a big reason for the long term success of Fraudology, Lucas Walker to join her on this side of the podcast to ask her anything, along with some questions sent in by listeners.

In this conversation, Karisse shares why (and how) she got into fraud, why she stays, some of the unique aspects of this emerging industry, the biggest myths in online fraud prevention, and what she loves most about being "air support".

Specific to Fraudology, she'll answer questions about her most memorable guests, a time she wanted to give up, what motivates her to keep going, and who in her "IRL" life surprised her the most by becoming a fan of Fraudology! She'll also share a few stories about some of the times that she's been blown away by the support of Fraudology fans (Aka: Fraudologists).

We would have never made it to this milestone without any of the loyal, the sporadic, or the occasional Fraudology listeners, the interesting guests, or our exceptional sponsors! So, thank you!

20 Apr 2023Strategies and Tactics to Mitigate the Risks of Refund Claims Fraud - Pt 2 w/ Dajana Gajic-Fisic00:43:58

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Dajana Gajic-Fisic, Head of eCommerce Risk Management at Finish Line is back for a follow-up conversation w/ Karisse about Refund Claim Fraud (RCF). Dajana provides insights on how merchants can address refund fraud and the importance of solving, not just stopping, it.

She also shares that as you begin to measure losses, identify gaps in the process, and start identifying gaps & vulnerabilities, you will not only identify ways to detect & reduce RCF, but also find many areas of opportunities to address gaps that may not be causing fraud, but do result in great financial losses for a retail business, and often provide a poor customer experience. But you don't always need to create brand new processes; Dajana provides a great example of how she leveraged an existing process & report performed by another team, to improve visibility into areas of opportunity to streamline processes & reduce additional costs within the business.

Karisse & Dajana also address some of the mistakes they've seen retailers make when trying to be reactive to one specific gap at a time, and not understand the root causes of the exploits. And Dajana also shares why communication and feedback are critical, the importance of tracking the "wins" you & your team achieve during this process, and why putting your name out there is essential for success.

***As mentioned at the end of this episode, there's a lot more that we want to share with other online retailers, but can't on a public platform (for several reasons). If you need to learn MUCH more about how refund claims fraud, and want to hear all that we couldn't share on a public platform, you can learn more about it & add your name & contact info to the waiting list for the upcoming virtual training course created by Karisse & Dajana here:

  • Doriel was asked to share one of his fascinating case studies, and he walks us through the signals of a potential fraud scheme with unknowns intentions and what was discovered.

With Holiday season 2023 just around the corner, Dajana Gajic Fisic, Head of e-commerce fraud & risk management for JD Sports North America (previously Finish Line), joins Fraudology to share some of her strategies to prepare for the biggest sales quarter of the year in retail.

While not all online companies earn 50%+ of their revenue in Q4, retailers with popular consumer goods, electronic gift cards, and subscription packages are preparing for late nights & early mornings. And for fraud-fighters, more sales + more demand = more fraud risks. Especially for a Holiday season during an economic downturn.

She also talks about why she removed all manual review functions from her team and how she was able to do this with great confidence. 27 Jul 2023Fraud-Fighter Profile: Vineet Grewal @ Wish .com on Relentlessly Improving Approval Rates01:05:57

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of Fraudology, Vineet Grewal, Senior Manager of Risk for the popular marketplace Wish .com joins Karisse to talk about her passion for fraud-fighting, people leadership, and relentless improving authorization rates.

With an incredible skill for remembering even the smallest details of sophisticated fraud cases and an impressive knack for implementing complex risk stacks for reducing various types of marketplace fraud attacks, Vineet has quickly become a go-to resource by her peers.

But as important as identifying & preventing fraud and abuse attempts on the platform she works for is, she says her "North Star" has become approval rates. While some may think that reducing chargebacks is the number one goal of a fraud leader, Vineet explains why that goal should always be balanced by increasing sales.

Other topics related to improving approval rates come up, such as: the importance of measuring approval rates from end-to-end, and not just at the front end; being aware of variables within different geographic markets such as holidays, consumer behavior, and the nuances of various payment methods; holding vendors accountable; the importance of using data & storytelling to communicate with cross-functional departments.

How can Fraudollogy improve? Take our listener survey!

Three weeks ago, Karisse provided an updated version of the popular episode recorded in 2019 titled "Merchants are from Mars, Vendors are from Venus" (episodes released Sept. 20 & Sept. 22, 2022). But, in fairness, both Part 1 and Part 2 were more focused on talking about vendor behavior that often causes more harm than good to the Vendor's reputation with merchants (buyers).

Fraudology listener and returning guest Gil Rosenthal got to thinking about the advice he would provide to FraudTech buyers, as a former buyer of fraud technology. When Karisse received Gil's seven-point list of advice for buyers, she asked Gil to come back to Fraudology to talk about these together. They also talk about:

  • Gil's month-long vacation on three continents, and the fraud-related epiphany he had while exploring Ireland
  • Suggestions for anyone who is tasked with selecting the fraud vendors to speak to and/or to partner with; from asking the right questions, speaking with your peers, selecting the right partner, contracts & pricing, and how to present to leadership why the solution is necessary

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of the Fraudology Podcast, host Karisse Hendrick provides a deep dive into what the perpetrator side of fraud refers to as "Inny's".

Inny's, short for "Insiders" are able to bypass the majority of fraud & policy defense systems by colluding with an employee to be given access to the account or action that the fraudster wants. From easily committing account takeovers to refund fraud to balance transfers, SIM swaps, and package re-routes, these are all tasks that customer service agents and/or in-store staff are being recruited and paid to do. And unfortunately, this activity often won't be found utilizing the methods or metrics to identify traditional internal theft tactics.

Karisse will then share how they are recruited, the average amount that they're paid, and what can be done to identify & prevent bad actors from hiring your customers for fraud-as-a-service.

26 Sep 2023Enabling Fraud-Fighters to Design Marketable Products to Address Big Problems (Like Refund Fraud) w/ Patrick Chen @ Spec01:14:55

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of Fraudology, host Karisse Hendrick is joined by Patrick Chen, a product expert who has specialized in solving complex risk-related problems creatively with technology for some of the largest online companies & platforms in the world. All of those experiences led him to become the co-founder of Spec, a risk & compliance platform that allows its users to approach fraud, and ultimately their (legitimate) customers' experience in new ways.

This conversation begins with a discussion about the "problem space" in online commerce & financial services. While we've collectively come a long way from where we were as an industry, it's clear to a majority of fraud-fighters (including the host & her guest) that all of the tools & technology that got us here, will not be able to take us through the next 10-15 years. -At least not without more defeat to cybercrime year over year.

Patrick talks about his shared vision of Spec with his co-founder and team of employees, in providing an infrastructure that provides raw data & flexibility necessary for combating fraud. It's a solution they wish they had when they were working to build a risk infrastructure from the ground up at one of the largest online marketplaces in the world; all with less engineering resources & priority than they needed.

And then....Patrick shares the extended vision of the Spec platform, as a marketplace (or an "app store", as a comparison). He shares their belief in the need for intellectual property development & ownership in the industry (for fraud-fighters, by fraud-fighters), the opportunities for experienced fraud-fighters to design & benefit from new solutions on the Spec marketplace, and the importance of understanding different industries to effectively combat fraud.

Karisse then shares a "secret" she's been keeping for over a year, about the first independently designed module on the Spec marketplace; one that will provide transparency & autonomy to retailers targeted by refund claims fraud (aka- refund fraud). And, she can't wait to see the brilliant product ideas of innovative fraud leaders come to life to provide dashboards & actionable workflows to benefit the industry (and their own pocketbooks, directly!)

12 Jan 2023Do Data Breaches Actually Lead to Online Fraud?00:58:47

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Last week, Karisse talked about 2 major data breaches that she speculated could lead to an increase in specific fraud method attempts. The next day, she read a LinkedIn post challenging the opinion that data breaches lead to more online fraud. And this caused her to challenge her long-held belief in today's episode of Fraudology.

Throughout this episode, you'll hear facts, data, and anecdotes from different perspectives to try to determine (once & for all?) if some or most online fraud is due to a data breach at some time. Or, is all of the information about every single consumer at the ready of cybercriminals when they want it?

Also discussed: An update from last week's episode on the news of 100s of millions of Twitter account details exposed, as now they have been publicly circulated, with more risks than online fraud/identity theft alone.

22 Sep 20222022 Edition: Merchants are From Mars, Vendors are From Venus - Pt. 200:47:43

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

As a continuation of Tuesday's episode (from Sept. 20), Karisse dives into the do's & don'ts of 2 more stages of the sales cycle with online anti-fraud and Trust & Safety technology solution providers. From the worst mistakes a salesperson can make during the initial sales call to how to navigate the follow-up process, including when a prospect "ghosts" you.

The biggest goal of this two-part mini-series is to help both solution providers and their prospects (merchants/banks/marketplaces, etc) understand a little more about each other's roles & perspectives. While the majority of this episode is geared towards solution providers, it is equally important for the buyer's in this process to better understand the pressures that those working for fraud-tech vendors are under; especially in the last few months.

27 Apr 2023Optimizing E-comm Fraud in 2023: 3DS in the US is "In"? And, Negative Lists Are "Out"? w/ Doriel Abrahams @ Forter01:11:02

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

If you enjoy listening to two passionate fraud-fighters "geeking out" about various fraud strategies...you will thoroughly enjoy this episode! Today, Karisse Hendrick speaks with Doriel Abrahams, Head of Risk for the US at Forter. Starting with how his passion for acting and linguistics/neuroscience prepared him for his accidental career in online fraud prevention.

Then, they discuss how online fraud has been changing rapidly over the last 18-24 months, and how it's more important than ever that all areas of a merchant's fraud strategy adapt to detect the latest methods, or they'll be left behind. Just as it's important to adapt internal operations & tactical prevention efforts, your core fraud provider should also be adapting & innovating at a similar pace as the malicious actors.

We saw this most with the "Master Manipulators" organized crime ring during the peak Holiday season of 2022 when the fraud strategies & technologies used by the majority of online retailers were put to the test during the busiest time of the year for online shopping. This rapid change in fraud tactics can also challenge using existing technology in the ways they've "always been used". Such as the "conventional wisdom" of the past surrounding topics like utilizing 3DS in the US, selectively using 3DS in the EU/APAC, advocating to Issuing banks to improve auth rates, and Karisse asks Doriel to explain why he doesn't believe in relying on negative lists.

09 Feb 2023The Role of Benchmarking During Uncertain Times w/ Shoshana Maraney00:35:07

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of Fraudology, host Karisse Hendrick is joined by Shoshana Maraney , to discuss the challenges faced by fraud prevention professionals in an era of increased uncertainty, and the project they've recently finished that they hope will become a helpful gift to the fraud-fighting community.

Shoshana & Karisse add a few more points to what Karisse was considering on Tuesday's episode: The same qualities that make online fraud prevention professionals great at identifying & protecting their company from fraud threats can also make uncertainty & stress within the workplace, whether they're struggling with challenging co-workers, bosses, or unrealistic expectations.

They complete the episode by sharing a project they've kept "under wraps" for months that is now ready for the input & help of fraud-fighters working for e-commerce and/or marketplaces to create a blueprint for the community to learn from each other. The 1st annual Fraud Benchmarking Survey couldn't have come at a better time, providing online merchants information to help them understand where they stand against their peers, and how to improve their organizations, while navigating the "unchartered waters" of working in tech during these challenging economic times.

31 Aug 2023Is Your RFI/RFP Process Incentivizing Vendor Bad Behavior?00:59:34

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this solo episode of Fraudology, host Karisse Hendrick explores the pitfalls of relying solely on RFIs (Request for Information) and/or RFPs (Request for Proposals), and how they often lead to unintentional consequences that too many fraud technology buyers (merchants, fintech, Financial Institutions, etc.). While this has been a longtime, standard practice used to compare & select 3rd party technology partners, Karisse has seen too many that end up incentivizing bad behavior from potential vendors.

What kind of bad behavior could be initiated with the submission of an RFI or RFP to a potential solution provider? -Tailored responses to fit buyers' preferences, and not necessarily the features of their own products, high pricing, being sold additional services that aren't necessary, contract loopholes, and ultimately selecting the solution provider that tells you what they know that you want to hear, and not what is necessarily accurate.

In this episode, Karisse provides an in-depth overview of common mistakes that are made in RFIs/RFPs sent to fraud providers, how those can be manipulated to tell you what you want to hear, and often lead to frustration a few months after implementation when you realize the product/service wasn't as good as they made it sound. And starting off a relationship with a new client on the wrong foot isn't good for the vendor and their long-term business goals, either.

Karisse also shares why she doesn't rely on traditional RFI/RFP processes when working with clients to select new solution providers for their fraud & payments needs. Instead, she emphasizes the importance of listening to user feedback, highlighting themes of customer satisfaction and dissatisfaction, and hopefully relying on the ultimate gold standard for vendor selection: A live POC (Proof Of Concept).

20 Sep 20222022 Edition: Merchants are From Mars, Vendors are From Venus - Pt. 101:06:40

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Following the recent replay of the first edition of the episode titled "Merchants are from Mars, vendors are from Venus" from 2019, several listeners have requested an updated version. Over the last 3 years, a lot has happened to change the merchant/vendor (buyer/seller) relationship within online fraud and Trust & Safety, and Service Providers. The pandemic changed a lot including transaction/account volumes and fraud tactics & methods targeting online companies. VC money was flowing from an endless faucet....and then, within the past few months, has dried up with no promise of when investors will be ready to write more checks. Also due to recent economic downturns, budgets for online companies w/ fraud issues are being cut, with fraud-fighters sighting "Expected to do more with less" as their #1 cause of work stress in Q3 2022.

So, in this first part of the 2022 edition of this episode, Karisse talks about some of the factors that are causing solution providers to be stressed out, and at times, pushy & desperate; and, also why it's not always reasonable to expect a reply to an email from a prospect. She also provides do's & don'ts for content marketing and initial sales emails & calls from vendors to fraud-fighting practitioners.

On Thursday's episode, Karisse will provide more advice for vendors & merchants throughout the 1st 1/2 of the sales cycle.

09 May 2023Fighting Fraud & Optimizing Revenue w/i Online Ticket Sales | Shawn Kelley (ex-SeatGeek)01:12:06

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

While fraud & payments differ in every online industry, the world of event ticketing is unique & complex, but also very fascinating. First, it's important to know the differences between primary and secondary markets in ticket fraud and who ticket brokers are, and why they're often considered a "necessary evil".

In this episode of the Fraudology podcast, host Karisse Hendrick sits down with Shawn Kelley, Former Director of Payment and Risk Operations at SeatGeek. Kelley shares his unique & unexpected journey into fraud prevention for a (then) small startup selling event tickets online called SeatGeek 7+ years ago. While building a fraud prevention and Trust & Safety department from scratch, he stumbled upon a new challenge of processing payments on behalf of venues partners thanks to a new partnership with an NFL team.

Throughout this episode, Shawn shares his passion for "zooming in" and "zooming out" on complex challlenges to identify solutions that not only saved SeatGeek millions and protected their customers, but that also became new lines of revenue for the business.

And then....Covid hit and all events were indefinitely "postponed". The unique complexities & nuances of being both a primary and secondary ticket provider really came into play during this time, providing a lot of chalenges that needed solved quickly, despite a world full of unknows. Karisse & Shawn also discuss the importance & opportunities of synergy between fraud and payments, uncovering the complex interplay in ticket transfers, and considerations to be made when selecting a machine learning partner, and it's struggle with ever-changing demographics.

23 Mar 2023Cybercrime Threats You Don't Know Yet + Big Issues with ID Doc Verification w/ David Maimon01:12:06

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

David Maimon is back (after Tuesday's episode) with even more insightful observations from his team's research of the cybercrime ecosystem. He first shares what the "Evidence Based Cybersecurity Research Group" at Georgia State University has observed about different groups & types of groups of cybercriminals. Including the online fraud methods, tools, and tactics that Russians cybercriminals prefer to the measurable impacts of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine on international cybercrime.

David then talks about one of the biggest changes over the last 2-3 years within the online fraud ecosystem, especially those targeting US companies' fraud methods that have grown exponentially. -The biggest threats are no longer external. "The call is coming from inside the house." The fact that the biggest threat actors to online companies & financial institutions are within the borders, by US citizens makes the types of fraud & methods being used much harder to identify than foreign threats. Whether it's identity fraud using stolen or fraudulent identity documents (driver's licenses, passports, etc.), check fraud, or refund claims fraud, American cybercriminals have the most to gain from American businesses. -With very little, if any repercussions.

After talking about some of the reasons why internal cybercrime is so much more difficult for fraud detection technology (especially detection technology that hasn't been updated in the last 2 years), Karisse & David talk about what the US government would need to do to even start to get a handle on these issues. But private companies can only do so much, no matter how much they spend to detect fraud; if changes aren't made to the low requirements to obtain identity documentation w/ a fake or stolen identity, there prevention efforts can only detect & prevent so much.

David ends the episode with probably the most informative 15 minutes you will hear this week as he talks about the top cybercrime threats he & his team are seeing being discussed and shared within the "criminal underground". From check fraud no longer being preventable by using gel pens to the millions of fake identities that are quietly aging, these new threats remind all of us that this battle to make it more difficult for cyberfraud to be committed is endless; often with more battles lost than won. -But that also highlights the critical importance of collaboration & information sharing, like we do on Fraudology, more than ever.

04 Apr 2023Cash App Accused of Enabling Fraud: Fact or Fiction? w/ Frank McKenna01:08:11

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Frank McKenna, the expert behind the popular "Frank on Fraud" blog and Chief Fraud Strategist at PointPredictive stops by to discuss a recent report published by Hindenberg research (A short-selling company intent on exposing fraud for corporate gains) that caused quite a few conversations & headlines within the online fraud world last week.

While the report brings up some concerning allegations, Karisse & Frank dissect some of the claims to demonstrate that when it comes to casting blame for online fraud, it's not always black & white. Being accused of enabling fake accounts is nothing new in the tech world, especially when user numbers are often the biggest contributor to a company's valuation. But, where's the line between being "under attack" and "enabling fraud"?

Cash App's meteoric rise was due to a rapid series of events including the ripple effects of Covid on the underbanked, massive amounts of fraud being stolen from government assistance programs, and the ease & use of Fintech technology vs. traditional banks. Did they ignore any regulations or simply not do what a group of people without fraud knowledge think they should have done? They also talk about how the type of platform Cash App may enable fraud by other companies' standards, but are they fraudulent to Cash App?

What becomes clear in this case is that there may not be a clear "right" or "wrong"; and that more than one thing can be true at once. It can be true that a lot of fraud was caught & prevented (which would only be known internally), but it can also be true that there is always more that can be done to reduce the impact of fraud on an online business, from fake accounts to payment fraud to money laundering.

It's also important to remember what every fraud-fighter with experience on "the frontlines" understands. That the battles they "fight" are not only coming from outside their company, but often they are "fighting" battles waged with them internally at the same time. And unlike the fight with cybercriminals, it often requires compromise between the altruistic ideals of the fraud/risk/Trust & Safety team and the demands/goals of the business.

Ultimately, neither Frank nor Karisse can make an absolute decision of what should have or could have been/should be done based solely on this report. There just isn't enough data to form an opinion one way or another. But, the topics they discuss & examples they share from a few anonymous fraud-fighters' experiences throughout this episode are timely, and may just prepare you for an upcoming battle you're not aware of yet.

15 Nov 2022Twitter Proves the Importance of User Trust + New Online Fraud Threats01:02:23

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In the last 2 weeks, the world has watched major changes at Twitter under the new ownership of Elon Musk occur rapidly. The biggest cause of these rapid changes was a loss of trust in the platform by its users. Billions of dollars were lost in advertising revenue, fake accounts were authenticated & caused issues of ranging severity, and over 1/2 of Twitter's 7500 employees are now unemployed.

Twitter has taught the tech world that they should never (again) undervalue the stability and consistency of Trust & Safety teams. Content moderation, payment acceptance, and fraud/identity all played major roles in the rapid downfall of this company, and on today's episode, Karisse is dissecting it all to explain what went wrong and why.

Also in this episode: New fraud trends impacting online retailers, Transunion reported a data breach to the state of Massachusettes (no details on numbers yet), and the impacts on the tech world of all of the other layoffs at large companies such as Meta, Stripe, and Chime.

On Thursday's episode, crypto compliance expert Stephen Sargeant will be joining Fraudology to talk about the rapid demise of crypto exchange FTX. Never a dull moment in the online fraud world!

18 May 2023Identifying Inauthentic Behavior & Financially Motivated Scams on Social Media | Assaf Kipnis (ex- Facebook / Meta)Pt. 201:15:44

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of Fraudology, Karisse is joined once again by Assaf Kipnis, former Engineering Manager for Integrity Investigations at Meta (previously Facebook). For the 2nd half of this informative conversation, Assaf provides examples of how his team studied & identified the TTPs (Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures) of some of the most complex & pervasion threats to integrity he & his team discovered & dismantled over the last several years of his career. -

Within this episode, Assaf particularly focuses on two of the most innovative threat tactics targeting legitimate users that his team dealt with: Inauthentic Behavior & Financially motivated scams. Some of the topics discussed include:

  • How identifying the motivation & behavior of two schemes that may, on the surface seem similar is critical to get to the root cause & ban the behavior in the future; example: "mis-" or "dis-information" versus "inauthentic behavior". While these terms are often generalized as the former, when it comes to eradicating the behavior, the details of the differences are critically important
  • The potential financial & reputational damage of "inauthentic behavior", and how focusing on behavior versus content is key when identifying coordinated attacks
  • Slight detour to discuss the privilege of having an in-house engineering team for integrity investigations, some tips for what to do if these types of issues can't be solved in-house, the importance of "babysitting" machine learning, and a few cautionary tips when considering new partners for 3rd party detection
  • The most pervasive & impactful financially motivated scams targeting social media platforms & users including "pig-butchering" (crypto scams that often target western citizens; typically originating in SE Asia), investment scams, and impersonation scams; how understanding the role & perspective that social media companies have on this behavior can be helpful in identifying the same attackers manipulating multiple systems for one overall crime

This conversation is incredibly fascinating! Especially if you've ever wondered how complex, yet sophisticated the Trust & Safety team at Meta needs to be to stay on the frontlines of identifying new attacks no one has seen before.

28 Nov 2022Early Release- This Will Change Online Fraud Forever Pt. 1 w/ Shoshana Maraney01:13:47

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

This episode was released as soon as possible due to the time-sensitive nature & importance for all fraud-fighters to know.

In the last week, Karisse & a group of online retailers put together the pieces of a complex puzzle they've been trying to understand for weeks. And the bigger picture is mind-blowing. It shows that at least one large organized crime ring is more coordinated, knowledgeable, and targeted in its attack methods than CNP merchants have ever seen.

This group of dedicated fraud-fighters has worked together to identify the general group that is behind these coordinated attacks, the unprecedented sophistication, and the brutal reason they've been able to scale so big, so quickly.

On today's episode, fraud expert & co-author of O'Reilly Publishing's "Practical Fraud Prevention" book, Shoshana Maraney joins Karisse to share as much (general) information as possible, and why this massive fraud ring is a sign that online fraud prevention is changing. -And not in a "good" way. And, even more importantly, the fraud prevention industry in all verticals needs to be ready for more organized attacks like this.

In this episode of Fraudology, host Karisse Hendrick is joined by her friend and Financial Services Risk expert, Gil Rosenthal to discuss the vulnerabilities and challenges of multifactor authentication. They explore various methods of verification, such as One Time Passwords (OTPs) via SMS or email, authentication apps and magic links, and examine the importance of monitoring unauthorized use claims after MFA was successful for account access or account activity (withdrawals, large purchases, etc.).

Gil & Karisse also delve into the indicators used to discover one of the five root causes of spikes in an MFA "attack". Such as, sudden changes in phone companies or a recently updated phone number or email address in an account, and they highlight the importance of analyzing the cause to identify a successful strategy to thwart more attempts. And, they also provide signs to identify when an unauthorized claim was made by the account holder ("1st party"/"friendly" fraud.

They wrap up the conversation with a few examples of successful strategies (both technical & process-based updates) to implement to identify & "stop the mouse" in this never-ending Cat-and-Mouse "game"!

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of Fraudology, cybercrime expert & head of the Evidenced Based CyberSecurity Research Group at Georgia State University, David Maimon shares insights on collecting data from the darknet, identifying emerging trends systematically, and how the cybercrime industry has changed in the last 5 years.

As he describes the various components within the world of cybercrime and online fraud, David starts making the comparison of this world to a deep underwater ecosystem. Throughout the conversation, he continues painting the picture of the factors that feed the continuous changes within the ecosystem, including how the ecosystem responds & adapts to antifraud measures in the industry. (This brilliant analogy might just replace Karisse's "infamous" "Zombie metaphor"!)

David also talks about the importance of understanding the entire ecosystem of cybercrime in order to implement the right methods to identify & compete with the "parasites"; and he sheds light on some of the misconceptions surrounding fraud prevention. David & Karisse end this conversation by addressing the misconception that any fraud or identity solution will make a difference in the eco-system, or even on the "organism" you are charged with protecting. The truth is, in some cases, cybercriminals have their favorite fraud & identity detection solutions....and that's not good news for the fraud-fighting industry.

20 Jul 2023How Re-directing Manual Review Increased Annual Revenue by 8-figures | Shawn Kelley (ex-SeatGeek)00:48:37

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of Fraudology, Shawn Kelley, Former Director of Payments & Risk for SeatGeek returns to share another fraud strategy success story. This time, the problem being solved was the length of time for the feedback loop on orders the fraud system wasn't identifying (aka- Fraud Chargebacks) was too long. This situation is most common for online companies that rely on & need to update rules engines, systems with supervised Machine Learning, and most any fraud tool that needs to learn from it's mistakes, and generally that time frame is in weeks, not days or hours, resulting in more fraud being missed until the 1st chargeback or notification of fraud is received.

By re-directing the placement and the overall focus/job duties for their team of fraud analysts, Shawn & his leadership were shocked by all of the positive outcomes!

  • Identifying fraud attacks & new methods in hours, instead of days to implement a feedback loop into their supervised machine learning system, and giving the fraud team the ability to help their Finance with more accurate forecasting numbers
  • Increasing annual PROFITS (not just revenue) by 10's of millions of dollars
  • Much happier & fulfilled fraud analysts which translated into a better team culture and higher employee retention rate

Whether this specific scenario is one your company faces, how Shawn & his team thought about a solution to the problem & the surprising outcomes they experienced can inspire you to look at a way that "things have always been done" in a different way, and to test possible solutions to identify the right one.

04 Jan 2023Millions of Password Vaults Exposed; What This Means for Online Fraud00:44:28

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In the last ~2 weeks, there have been headlines about 3 data breaches/"security incidents" that are worse than we could have imagined.Just some of the headlines from these 3 incidents:

"400M Twitter users’ data is reportedly on sale in the black market"

"LastPass finally admits: Those crooks who got in? They did steal your password vaults, after all…"

"Okta confirms another breach after hackers steal source code"

With the news that millions more names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, passwords, and other valuable PII were exposed via massive data breaches recently, this is sure to have a massive impact on your customers. And as a result, on your business.

In this episode, Karisse goes through some of the details of each incident, the specific PII that has been exposed, and just how bad this is for any business with user log-ins; from Banks to Crypto to online commerce. Because of this, and additional current threats to online fraud, it is clear that collectively, the anti-fraud world needs to "up their game".

The tools & processes we've relied on for years will be rendered useless on their own if those systems rely solely on verifying that the information at the time of a user log-in or check-out matches a legitimate user. 07 Sep 2022Navigating an Unexpected Layoff as a Fraud-Fighter w/ Meredith McCleary01:05:21

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Over the years, those of us in the fraud-fighting industry have sometimes joked about "job security". As long as fraud was still targeting businesses & banks, it was assumed that we would always have a job, unless we wanted to leave for our own reasons.

But, one harsh reality in 2022 has been the hundreds, if not thousands of layoffs (or redundancies) of professional fraud-fighters in various business types. Whether it's in consumer fintech, the banking industry, fraud-tech vendors sales & marketing, or ecommerce, we have seen LinkedIn post after LinkedIn post about seeking new opportunities.

One of those people recently impacted by this wave was Meredith McCleary; a passionate fraud-fighter & Certified Fraud Examiner who was previously in the mortgage & lending industry. Meredith took action, and has impressed the host of this podcast with her vulnerability, tenacity, and compassion for others in similar situations. So, she was invited on Fraudology to share:

  • Some of the fraud tactics she witnessed while in the mortgage industry for 9+ years.
  • What she did in the following hours, days, and weeks after feeling like the rug was pulled out from under her & was laid off with no notice
  • How she has leveraged LinkedIn to build a network & help countless others in a similar situation as she has found herself in
  • The advice she has for other job seekers in the fraud prevention/investigations industry should they experience a layoff or redundancy, or even if they're still employed, but looking for a new role for their own reasons.

Additional benefits of having a dedicated person/team to investigate fraud across dozens to hundreds of related accounts, should be the Norm, (according to Karisse) as they can become great at picking up patterns that an ML model may not catch, building relationships with various law enforcement agencies, and working with federal agents & the US District Attorney.

Throughout this conversation, Eric will share a few stories of post-transaction investigations he has investigated and/or overseen; including the international fraud ring that resulted in his employer recovering financial restitution (above 7-figures USD!) from the seizure & sale of items that the fraudsters' once owned.

26 Jan 2023How can the same cardholders keep getting their new card #s compromised?00:40:16

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

This question (or a form of it) has been asked multiple times recently by different people in Karisse's life. From the dental assistant at her dentist's office to a couple of Fraudology listeners asking on behalf of themselves or co-workers, and at least one online merchant that received an escalated call from an upset victim of credit card fraud that accused their company of stealing his recently re-issued card #.

While these instances could all be coincidental, as fraud-fighters, we know there usually isn't such a thing as a coincidence. So, on this week's episode of Fraudology, Karisse lays out 5 different ways that fraudsters have learned to "recycle" or learn the new card # on a credit card account w/ a card that was recently closed, and reissued with a new card # due to fraud.

Tha advantages to knowing these often not discussed methods are to help you troubleshoot & identify the various root causes if this happens to you, a family member, or a customer; and to be aware of the various methods used to identify "fresh" card #s that often lead to recurring card fraud victims. And what can be done to prevent these methods, either/and by the cardholder, the issuing bank, and/or the merchant of record?

31 Oct 2023Gil Rosenthal Answers Questions from Issuers/Banks/Fintechs about Payment Fraud & Professional Development00:48:58

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of Fraudology, host Karisse Hendrick is again joined by recurring guest Gil Rosenthal, an expert in Credit & Risk Management for Fintechs, Banks, and Issuers. Karisse recently received a couple of great questions from Fraudology listeners in the financial services space, and asked the best person she knows in this side of fraud prevention & risk management to help her answer their questions.

Question One: We’ve been getting slammed with CNP, Token, COF and general eCom fraud for the past year or so. We are having difficulties understanding what’s happening, since we only know what fraud looks like on our end!! We don’t understand what we’re looking at when we see the same merchant ID with multiple acquirer IDs. We don't know how to identify if a terminal is legitimate or a possible stolen terminal that’s been changed programmatically. We don’t know if we’re looking at legitimate monthly charges being runs seconds apart from each other, or if we’re looking at a dark web purchased list of cards being tested!! Do you know where an issuer could go to learn these things?

Question Two: I’m in the financial services sector and would like to transition to a role in fraud and payments risk at a retailor or processor. Any advice?

Listen to this episode to hear answers to these questions from guest Gil Rosenthal & host Karisse Hendrick. They'll discuss the significance of identifying any abnormal activity and spikes in transactions, the importance of understanding specific terminology in different industries, and the benefits of networking and connecting with others in the field.

From career transitions to detecting potential issues, Gil & Karisse provide valuable advice and actionable tips for fraud prevention professionals.

05 Dec 2023Refund Fraud Is Officially Illegal And Black Friday/Cyber Monday 2023 - Online Fraud Update00:51:56

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this solo episode of Fraudology, Karisse focuses in on issues impacting e-commerce retail during the winter holiday season. Starting first with an update on the prediction she made in an earlier episode (9 November 2023) involving Black Friday/Cyber Monday and the possible return of the online fraud ring, the "Master Manipulators". She also shares how predicting unpredictable behavior of fraudsters is important, but also isn't a perfect science.

Switching gears slightly, Karisse then shares recent news that the US Department of Justice has officially taken a position on refund claims fraud (aka- refund fraud), and once again makes a strong case for the importance of post-transaction investigations teams within e-commerce to work with law enforcement to prosecute bad actors.

25 Jul 2023Trust & Safety Policies Saved Our Family Vacation00:26:57

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

We're switching up this week's episode format with a solo episode from Karisse 1st. (And an interview with a great fraud-fighter on Thursday!)

In a world where we can drive a stranger's car, sleep in a stranger's house, and buy tickets to a Broadway performance from someone we don't know, it's important for those companies to plan for the worst before it happens. Not only to keep customers happy, but to prevent credit card disputes (chargebacks).

In this episode, Karisse shares some of the unexpected challenges & change of plans from a recent family vacation, and how the vacation could have been so much worse if it weren't for the Trust & Safety policies of the 2-sided marketplaces she booked portions of their trip on.

For anyone in Trust & Safety/Chargeback prevention, it's important to put ourselves in the shoes of our customers. People spend money with companies that they like & trust. And not providing the trust ahead of time, and throughout their experience can be detrimental. Often resulting in the loss of active users, potential users, and loss of revenue + extra expenses due to complaints and/or chargebacks.

13 Jul 2023Mid-year Update: Chargeback Rule Changes & Coordinated Cyber + Fraud Attacks00:39:07

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

As a follow-up to the conversation with Frank & Mary Ann on Tuesday's episode, Karisse talks about two of the predictions that she contributed to their combined list for 2023.

Did these two predictions prove to impact the online fraud industry as much as expected? Or could they become more of an issue in the 2nd half of the year?

The two main topics of this podcast are: The 2023 Visa Rule "Update" referred to as "Compelling Evidence 3.0" and the current status** of the impact to CNP merchants since going into affect in April 2023.

And the insular fraud attacks that leverage cyber skills (hacking, data breaches, DDoS attacks etc) with financial fraud methods.

(**Since recording this episode, more information has been provided to show that while some merchants aren't seeing much of an impact, others are seeing more drastic changes to their fraud chargeback win-rates than was represented in this episode. The reasons behind the inconsistencies still need to be investigated, but we'll try to provide an even newer update once one is available.)

31 Jan 2023E-commerce Expansion: Coordinated fraud & payment strategies w/ Tin Cheung & Holly Sandberg @ Ticketmaster00:51:35

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

One aspect of leading global fraud operations & strategy successfully is collaborating & coordinating strategies with cross-functional leaders/departments within the company. One of the teams that it's imperative for the fraud team to work closely with is the Payments team (responsible for payments acceptance, product management & often regulatory compliance).

One example of when the fraud & payments teams need to be aligned most is when the ecommerce/marketplace business makes a decision to expand, either into a new market or to accept a new payment method. Often these teams are responsible for different, yet complimentary aspects of understanding new customer behavior, ensuring current and/or future vendors are capable of meeting the business needs, and all other necessary considerations in the process.

Often, when a company has a strong payments SME, the fraud department will benefit (and vice versa). That has definitely been the case for Ticketmaster over the last 12 months since Holly Sandberg (Sr. Director of Global Fraud Prevention) joined Tin Cheung (Sr. Director of Global Payments Acceptance) in the same department. Both of these leaders are experts in their own fields, and have enjoyed learning & working with each other on all aspects of the business where payments & fraud intersect.

On today's episode of Fraudology, both Holly & Tin will share a bit about the importance of creating a multi-level strategy for new and updated processes that enable customers the ability to pay how they want to pay, in the languages & currencies they want to pay in, without risks to the consumer or the merchant of record.

In addition to discussing some of the more tactical aspects of aligning a fraud & payments strategy, Tin & Holly also expand into more generally applicable topics such as global leadership w/ humility & mentorship in mind, successful aspects of strategy creation & execution, and cohesively doing what's best for the business & their customers.

30 Mar 2023Silicon Valley Bank Collapse; The Fraud-Related Aftermath00:44:14

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

It's been just 3 weeks since the sudden collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. In this solo episode of Fraudology, Karisse shares some of the opportunistic fraud methods deployed toward SVB banking clients, other banks & financial institutions welcoming new business bank accounts opened quickly, and schemes targeting the AP (Accounts Payable) departments of businesses of all sizes. She also explores the ways cybercriminals take advantage of the volume of new account openings, and while third-party fraud attack rates have returned to normal, synthetic fraud account opening attempts are still much higher since the SVP closure.

This information is not only important for fraud fighters to continue to know what to be on the lookout for currently, and what to communicate to the appropriate teams w/i their companies who could be prime targets; but also to provide lessons that should be learned now, in case a similar bank collapse occurs again. Because, as she points out, history often has a way of repeating itself; so it's important to learn from the fraud ecosystem's response to this bank collapse to be prepared if/when something similarly occurs in the market.

29 Dec 2022REPLAY - Bringing Real World Consequences to Cyber Criminals w/ Robert Capps & Eric Boles01:13:00

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Most online fraud-fighters may daydream about seeing their most prolific fraud rings facing real-world consequences for their crimes. But, very few get to see that kind of justice served. For a variety of factors, most online companies do not have a post-transaction investigation department whose focus is on further investigations to tie all orders & accounts to one ring, identify the person/people behind the screens, and work with federal law enforcement agencies. But, the original Trust & Safety team at StubHub (until 2015) proved it can be done and can provide great benefits to the company in the form of restitution and reduced fraud attempts. And, they have the scars & stories to prove it!

On this week’s episode, Karisse is joined by Robert Capps, former head of Trust & Safety for StubHub and current blockchain expert; along with Eric Boles, who transitioned to the “privcate sector” to create the investigations unit for StubHub from the US Secret Service, and now heads up an e-crimes department at Yahoo, Inc. On today’s podcast we talk about so much! Including:

  • The catalyst for creating an internal investigations unit to focus on “catching” and prosecuting the most prolific fraudsters on the StubHub platform, and a few of the hidden benefits of these efforts they couldn’t have anticipated.
  • What the World Series, the San Francisco Giants, and 2 of the most violent Chicago street gangs had in common; along with oither fascinating examples of what was discovered when the investigations team identified the people behind the large-scale fraud threats, and what other crimes these fraudulent purchases funded.
  • Why merchants & marketplaces should re-consider their strategy against long-term deterrence from committing fraud on their websites & services, and a few ways to get started if this is something you want to duplicate.

06 Sep 2023Recovering 7-Figures $ in Restitution from a Fraud Ring w/ Eric Boles, Cybercrime Investigations Expert01:05:18

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

In this episode of Fraudology, Karisse has the pleasure of hosting Eric Boles; a former special agent of the US Secret Service and former leader of e-crime investigations at StubHub, Yahoo, and AOL.

Eric shares his insights on the rise of cybercrimes and the urgent need for consequences and accountability to curb online financial fraud. From navigating the unfair chargeback rule system to building successful relationships with law enforcement, Eric provides valuable strategies for companies to proactively investigate and prosecute fraud. -Ensuring the protection of their data, reputation, and shareholders' money.

Eric and Karisse touch on several related topics, including why more online companies should be investing in an investigations department, and all of the benefits that will provide.

Join us as we delve into Eric's impressive career and uncover his methods for catching perpetrators and advocating for post-transaction investigations.

Eric Boles is now available for consulting or FTE remote opportunities in all areas of e-crimes investigations such as: phishing campaigns, "pig butchering" scams, malware/ransomware, online payment fraud, non-payments fraud (ATOs, Promotional abuse, etc.)

In this episode of Fraudology, host Karisse Hendrick welcomes back special guest Shoshana Maraney to continue discussing the newly released Fraudology benchmarking survey results. While on Tuesday's episode they talked about some of the areas that surprised them, today they dive into the topics that most fraud leaders collectively knew (in their gut/intuition), but until now, we didn't have reliable or actionable data to present to leadership.

Some of the topics from the survey discussed today include: the importance of trusting peers' experiences when evaluating fraud solution providers, what factors will cause a merchant to consider leaving their current provider, and the need for better customer care & product innovation in the fraud technology (vendor) space.

Karisse & Shoshana highlight other outcomes from the survey on topics such as salary ranges, embracing change, and the growing focus on improving the entire customer experience/journey.

This episode, and ultimately the survey report both offer valuable insights and actionable takeaways for fraud professionals. Get ready to gain a deeper understanding of fraud prevention strategies and the power of data in this engaging conversation.

21 Feb 2023A field guide to working with other teams w/i your org w/ Nate Kharrl at Spec01:18:53

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Often, leaders of fraud departments will say something to the effect of "My biggest adversaries aren't the bad actors trying to commit fraud against our organization; they're within my company and work within other departments that will often sabotage us or not understand our roles, which can lead to more problems than account or payment fraud does."

Whether your internal adversaries are in marketing, business development, e-commerce, operations, development/engineering, or cyber security, chances are, they believe they have a full picture of what your company's customers & accounts look like, and don't understand your team's perspective. Because each team often works in its own silo, with its own data sets from different portions of a customer's journey, they can rarely agree on the root causes of problems, and therefore, can't agree on solutions. Not to mention, each department is often measured by competing metrics (new account #s vs. account integrity, Total $ of sales vs. total $ of chargebacks), causing them to focus on competing projects, often impacting the fraud team downstream unintentionally.

What if a fraud fighter at heart (and w/ experience on "the front lines") suddenly got the opportunity to work with all of these competing departments from dozens of companies, identifying commonalities across these departments, that often the fraud dept is only at odds with, and rarely gets to work on anything but immediate problem solving or challenging each other's viewpoints of their customers?

Nate Kharrl, CEO at Spec has had such an opportunity in the last year, and joined Karisse on Fraudology today to share some of what he's found are common themes & issues that other departments outside of fraud care about, and why they often struggle to understand the impact of the mission of an online fraud prevention team for e-commerce & consumer-focused fintech companies.

Because Spec attaches to an online company's system upstream, it can provide a common source of truth for all departments across the company of the entire customer journey. And even if a fraud team brings in the product for review, it inevitably becomes the envy of any department that has a vested interest in better understanding the full picture of a customer experience.

04 May 2023Is it Possible to Select the Right Vendor w/o a Live POC? w/ Neill Mac Carthaigh (PT. 2) @ eShopWorld01:04:14

Fraudology is presented by Sardine.

Neill Mac Carthaigh, Head of Global Fraud & Risk at eShopWorld returns to Fraudology to continue the 2nd half of his conversation with host Karisse Hendrick.

They start out talking about the complexities of fraud team structures and how the department that a fraud team reports to can have a significant impact on all strategy & technology decisions. The remainder of their conversation is focused on Neill's advice to fraud-fighters when they must navigate the landscape of current fraud prevention providers. How do you know it's time to consider a new provider? What requirements should you be looking for?

Unfortunately, not all fraud vendors are created equal, despite what many of them would like you to believe. It's advantageous to some to have you think that all solutions are the same. However, selecting a provider that no longer invests in keeping up with the newer tactics of today could be detrimental to your company's bottom line...and even worse, its brand reputation. But, with engineering constraints on most fraud teams, often a live POC (Proof of Concept) isn't a possibility.

Neill then shares his suggestions for other ways to verify a vendor's claims prior to signing a contract. While these may mean more work for a sales team, the companies that have updated & effective fraud detection product(s) will happily provide additional information. -Most of these suggestions are things Karisse hasn't heard before...so pay attention & write these down!

Neill & Karisse round out their conversation by touching on the importance of accountability and engagement when managing current fraud vendors to maximize a successful fraud prevention strategy.
