13 Apr 2020 | Ep. 044 | SSgt Matthew Koetting | Recon Marine | 04:04:32 | |
Matt Koetting served in the United States Marine Corps as an assaultman, machine gunner, joint terminal attack controller (JTAC), Marine Corps instructor of water survival (MCIWS) and Reconnaissance Marine. Matt served with 1st Battalion 3rd Marine Regiment during two deployments to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. During his deployment to Afghanistan, Matt took part in Operation Moshtarak which was meant to wrest control of the city of Marjah from Taliban and insurgent forces. During the operation, he was severely wounded by an improvised explosive device (IED). He was medically evacuated from the point of injury to Camp Bastion Air Base in order to stabilize him before moving to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and finally Walter Reed National Medical Center. During recovery, Matt underwent more than a dozen surgeries to repair damage caused by the IED blast and was awarded the Purple Heart medal by President Barack Obama. Matt is not one to be held back by adversity, so he applied to screen for one of the hardest jobs in the Marine Corps, Reconnaissance Man. He completed Basic Reconnaissance Course and was assigned to the legendary 1st Reconnaissance Battalion at Camp Pendleton, CA. While serving as a recon Marine, Matt attended the US Army Airborne School at Ft. Benning, GA and the Tactical Air Control Party school at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, among others. After completing his final deployment as part of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Matt realized his ongoing issues with the injuries he suffered during his IED blast would make him a liability to his team and he was medically retired from the Marine Corps. After leaving the service, Matt worked in different industries while finishing his degree and used his experience to co-found Invictus International. His company provides armed and unarmed security options for various assets requiring their specialized service. He continues to support the military community by employing veterans that can bring real-world experience to a job that requires maturity and decisive action in stressful situations. It was a pleasure interviewing Matt and I look forward to our future conversations on the Former Action Guys Podcast. As always, make sure to subscribe and share the show! Following that deployment, Gage attended TACP school and was immediately given orders back to 2/6 for their upcoming deployment to Nawa. We also have a great discussion concerning mental health and the inaction by those most affected. Like me, Gage is a motorhead so we talk about his new Indian motorcycle and he compares how it rides to his Harley Davidson Dyna. HM2 Tyler Fogg is a US Navy Corpsman that I worked with at 1st ANGLICO and has had some interesting billets during his ongoing career. Prior to being assigned to 1st ANGLICO, Fogg worked with the US Customs and Border Patrol on the southern border and was involved in emplacing sensors to monitor human and drug trafficking as well as assisting in the apprehension of illegal immigrants, human traffickers and drug mules. Following that assignment, Fogg had the opportunity to train at the Navy Trauma Training Center in Los Angeles. This training program allows military medical personnel to work in one of the busiest trauma centers in the country and get hands-on experience with gunshot, stab, and other types of traumatic injuries. This allows military members to get vital hands-on experience prior to deploying downrange. Fogg also attended the west coast Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) course and used that experience to help sway him to become an east coast SERE instructor. Although the actual courseware is classified, Fogg gives some insight into how the school is conducted and what prospective students can do to be successful. LtCol David Armstrong is on the podcast with us this week. David is a former Marine artillery officer whose career took many interesting turns over the years. Armstrong was at Ft. He eventually got what he asked for and was sent to Somalia as an attachment from 11th Marines and was able to conduct fire missions and control air assets during multiple engagements. Armstrong also served with 1st ANGLICO and goes into details about his time with the unit and some of the different professionals he worked with. On this episode of the podcast, I interview my father for Father's Day and learn more about the family's history. My grandfather served in the Army Air Corps towards the end of WWII and during the occupation afterwards in Japan and eventually transferred to the newly formed Air Force. We also discuss my dad's time being stationed in Germany with the Army in the mid-70's. Following his active service, he eventually made his way to the Army Reserves where he worked as a mental health specialist. We get into some pretty disturbing content at this point as we talk about him working with soldiers at Ft. Benning and military prisoners at Ft. Leavenworth. Davison breaks down his time in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and we compare and contrast that component with being on active duty. We also discuss the military occupation specialty (MOS) school located at Camp Johnson, NC. As previously mentioned, Davison is in law enforcement and breaks down the vetting and lengthy hiring process for multiple law enforcement agencies in California. Tony Leal was a Marine infantryman (0311) with A Company 1st Battalion 5th Marine Regiment and completed two combat deployments with the battalion. In 2004 he began his first deployment to Iraq and took part in the first assault on the tumultuous city of Fallujah after Blackwater contractors were ambushed, killed, and hung from the city's bridge. The following year, Leal returned to Iraq and operated out of Ramadi with 1/5. The battalion began experiencing what would be a nationwide increase in the usage of IEDs. Following his enlistment in the Marine Corps, Leal began pursuing his life-long passion of joining the ranks of the Texas Department of Public Safety's Texas Highway Patrol as a Trooper. He worked his way up the ranks of Texas law enforcement until joining the storied Texas Rangers. As a Texas Ranger, Leal would be responsible for investigating some of Texas's most heinous crimes.
