20 May 2021Pat Nevin - Part 1: The Accidental Footballer, Clyde, Chelsea.00:35:23

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the podcast that gets under the shirt.

Today I meet the thinking man’s footballer - Mr Pat Nevin.

During the podcast, Pat talks about his new book - The Accidental Footballer - as he reflects on his time growing up in Glasgow, being part of an academic family and his somewhat reluctant path to becoming a professional footballer.

Pat was so generous with his time, sharing so many incredible stories that I wanted to break this podcast into two parts and make sure you got to hear everything he shared with me.

Here in part one Pat talks about his time with Chelsea, reflecting on his first season in 83/84 through the choice of the home shirt the blues wore in that promotion season. We also cover Pat’s move to Everton following Chelsea’s relegation back to the second division in 1988. There we discuss the difficulties in maintaining a winning but ageing team and there’s a sliding doors moment for Pat as he mulls over a potential move to PSG.

Part two arrives on Monday, where Pat discusses Scotland and his next two football shirt choices - be sure to follow Football Kit Memories wherever you listen to your podcasts so you don’t miss it.

I really do hope you enjoy this... as much as I did.

Welcome to Football Kit Memories...

22 Apr 2021Phil Differ - Comic Writer - Only An Excuse, BBC Scotland, Comedy Unit00:46:20

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.

Today I meet a legend of Scottish comedy, Mr Phil Differ.

Since the 1980s, Phil has written and produced for some of the most memorable and iconic shows for stage and screen including Not The Nine O’Clock News, Spitting Image and Chewin The Fat.

He’s perhaps best known for the long running Scottish football impression based satire - Only An Excuse, which began life on radio but transitioned to TV in 1993. In the following 27 years the show became a New Years Eve institution in Scotland - with main actor Jonathan Watson playing a host of characters including Frank McAvennie, Kenny Dalsglish and Sir Alex Ferguson just before the bells rang each year.

In the podcast Phil talks to me about the show, his career and his latest play on the life of former Dundee United boss Jim McLean - which is rather aptly called Smile.

The play is available to stream for a limited time on the Dundee Rep Theatre website - links to this here https://dundeerep.co.uk/whats-on/smile

Later I asked Phil to pick three football shirts tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. We take a nostalgic look back at Scottish football in the sixties, with the hooped shirt Celtic wore in Lisbon in 67  and the national team goalkeeper jersey worn in the win over England at Wembley that sam year. We finish things off with a look at the Brazil shirts from the 1970 and 1982 world cups. Phil clearly loves his shirts.

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories the football podcast that gets under the shirt

Today we talk mental health in football, with owner of The Football Mindset, John Johnstone.

In a fascinating chat, John talked me about the ways he helps professional footballers overcome mental hurdles in order to improve their game. We cover John’s podcast and his successful book Master Your Confidence, an essential tool for professional footballers which is available now on Amazon.

Later I asked John to pick out three of his favourite football shirts and tell me about what they mean to him. There’s Shankly Reds, Scotland’s tartan and Ronaldo’s yellow worn at the World Cup in France 98.

13 May 2021Alex Stewart - Presenter/Producer at Tifo Football 00:42:35

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.

Today I meet Alex Stewart, one of the presenters/producers behind Tifo Football, one of my favourite football channels on YouTube.

During our chat, we cover Alex’s somewhat unusual route into the game as we find out how the time he spent in the Police, recognising patterns shaped his specialism as a self confessed ‘tactics nerd’. We also cover the origins of TIFO, its takeover by The Athletic and the joys of Football Manager.

Later I asked Alex to pick three football shirts and tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. Clearly Alex is a bit of an aficionado, and he picked out some beauties including a Draper Tools & Hummel classic for Southampton, one of the first AS Roma shirts Francesco Totti wore and there’s something else with a big shark on it.

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.

Today I meet John Walker, host and creator of the excellent Scots Abroad Podcast.

Recorded just before the Euro 2020 squad announcement we talk Scotland and the reasons why John set up his podcast in order to track the growing number of Scottish footballers, as well as other interesting Caledonians doing their thing abroad. We also cover his other podcast the Trampled Bet and I find out about his ambition to become a professional football coach.

Later I asked John to pick three football shirts and tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. We put club differences aside as we discuss John’s side Rangers, the World Cup in France 98 and we finish with a double winning Arsenal shirt worn by his hero Freddie Ljungberg.

03 Jun 2021Sachin Nakrani - Guardian Sport Writer & Editor and host of the FANS Podcast00:44:25

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.

Today I meet Guardian Sport Writer & Editor as well as host of the FANS Podcast, Sachin Nakrani.

In our chat we cover Sachin’s long career at the paper he joined in 2007, how during that period his role has changed and he pulls back the curtain on the process behind writing the obituary of the eternal Diego Maradona.

Later I asked Sachin to pick out three of his favourite football shirts and tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. Clearly the 90s represents the peak of Sachin’s football shirt fandom as his choices rather nicely span the full decade. Roger Milla’s Cameroon kicks us off at Italia 90, Stan Collymore’s Liverpool sees us through the half time whistle and the ref blows for full time following Milan’s Scudetto winning Adidas and   Opel classic from 98/99.

Today I meet Deputy Editor of long running football magazine When Saturday Comes Mr Tom Hocking.

During our chat, we talked about the magazine that’s run for 35 years, its iconic look & feel plus the ways in which its remained true to its roots as a very much for the fans by fans style publication.

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.

In our chat we cover Andy’s career, form making his debut in the Premier League with Birmingham City, his drive to get game time out on loan as well as his appearance in the Scottish Cup Final with Ross County.

There’s also plenty about Andy’s second life as a senior brand manager for Joma in Scotland, where he talks to me about the strides the brand is making in in the SPFL as well as at the grass roots level.

05 Aug 2021Matthew Ketchell - Newcastle Chronicle, Match Of The Day Mag, Searching For Shineys Pod00:32:10

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt

In today’s epsiode Im joined by football writer, presenter and co-host of the Searching For Shineys Pod - Matthew Kethcell.

During the show I talk to Matthew about his role at The Chronicle, covering Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesborough in the North East, as well his previous role at the BBC’s Match of The Day Magazine. I first came across Matt on Twitter when I heard about the podcast he co-hosts with his friend Richie - The Searching For Shineys Pod - in which they try and interview every footballer from the 1997 Premier League sticker book. It’s well worth a listen and I enjoyed catching up with Matt about the reasons they set it up as well as update on the mission so far...

Later I asked Matthew to pick out three of his favourite football shirts and tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. As an ex-Goalkeeper, Matt dived into the early nineties to pick out an England  Chris Woods Umbro number from Euro 92. We stayed in between the sticks for a Pawel Srnicek classic for Newcastle by Asics. We finished talking about his beloved Toon and the season that could have been in 1995/96 with that red & blue hoped Adidas away.

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.

Later I asked Kenny to pick out three of his favourite football shirts and tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. We covered some classic shirts as Kenny told me about a trip to the Velodrome inspired by Marseilles legend Franck Sauzée, meeting the Jamaicans in Paris during France 98 and we round off 114 years of history with Hibernian’s emotional Scottish Cup Win in 2016.

30 Sep 2021Andy Laing - Football Writer, Alba Matter00:43:47

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt

In today’s episode I'm joined by football writer Andy Laing.

During our chat I find out how being laid up in a hospital bed was the motivation behind Andy’s starting the Alba Matter website in 2020. Andy uses his background in education and growth mindset coaching as inspiration for his writing - and its his personal outlook that makes these articles covering mainly Scotland’s Men and Women’s national teams so interesting. Andy also sheds light on the excellent poem he wrote that was published by the Scottish FA the night before the Czech Republic game at Euro 2020.

Later I asked Andy to pick out three of his favourite football shirts and tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. Andy shared some great memories as we reminisced about reading football annuals cover to cover and the same football VHS titles till they were worn out. We started in Mexico in 1986 and the great home shirt El Diego wore to dazzle defenders. Our travels took us to Turin and Bianconeri stripes worn by Baggio, Ravenlli and Vialli… and we finished in glamorous Kenilworth road, home of Luton Town.

07 Oct 2021Dr Kevin Moore - Football Historian, Author and Former CEO of The English National Football Museum00:39:25

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.

In today’s episode I am joined by Author, Football Historian and Former Director of the National Football Museum Dr Kevin Moore

During our chat, Kevin shares his memories about the conception and opening of English National Football Museum, which he ran for its first 20 years.

Theres the history, the artefacts and a number stories Kevin shares about his life in football. I learned so much on the call and I could have spoken with Kevin for hours.

Later I asked Kevein to pick out three of his favourite football shirts and tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. Each of these shirts either is or has at one point been on display at the museum as we cover Maradona’s Hand of God away shirt from 1986, the England shirt Bobby Moore swapped with Pele in 1970 and we finish in 1872, with the woolen jersey England wore in the first ever football international versus Scotland.

21 Feb 2023Martin O'Neill00:34:12

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt

In today’s episode I'm joined by a true footballing great - Martin O’ Neill.

Martin has recently published his excellent memoir - ‘On Days Like These’ and I was lucky enough to catch up with him to discuss his career through his choice of three different football shirts.

A league and two time European Cup winner at Nottingham Forest, Martin went on to augment his trophy cabinet with yet more honours as a top level manager at clubs like Leicester City, Celtic and various others. Martin was captain of the famous Northern Ireland team that reached the second round of the World Cup in 1982, something he reprised as manager of the Republic of Ireland at Euro 2016.

Martin was kind enough to put a lot of thought into his shirt choices and this, coupled with his unique storytelling ability means that listeners are in for a real treat today.

In today’s episode I'm joined by Nooruddean Choudry, who has recently published his first book, a memoir of his life called Inshallah United - A Story of Faith and Football. I’ve really enjoyed Nooruddean’s output over the years, be it on Twitter, in the Guardian or various podcasts and I was delighted to get some time in with him to discuss the book in what turned out to be a far more wide ranging chat.

We cover off his writing process, imposter syndrome and the desire for authenticity, something I can tell you he successfully delivers throughout the book. We also chat about his large following on Twitter, what that means to him and of course, as always Nooruddean picks out three football shirts that mean something to him.

01 May 2023Alastair Campbell 00:27:38

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.

In today’s episode I'm joined by a huge name in podcasting and politics, Alastair Campbell.

Beginning his professional life as journalist, Alastair Campbell became more widely known as the chief communication strategist in successive Labour governments during the Tony Blair years. More recently, his podcast The Rest is Politics, which he co-hosts with former Conservative MP Rory Stewart has consistently topped the charts and has made politics more engaging and accessible for a mass audience, including me!

We also cover his latest book ‘But What Can I Do?’ (out May 11th), written to arm the average person with ways and means of making a real difference in the complex and confusing world of politics.

Beyond all this, of course, Alastair is famously a huge Burnley and Scotland fan and we talk about his experience of football through his choice of three very special football shirts.

25 May 2023James Brown - founding Editor of Loaded Magazine, author of 'Animal House'00:46:21

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.

In today’s episode I'm joined by the founder and first editor of Loaded magazine - James Brown.

James recently published his memoir ‘Animal House’ which covers his life both before and after the magazine and for me it was an excellent read in the way it honestly reflects both the highs and lows of celebrity and excess during the 1990s.

James initially began writing in Leeds during the 1980s, where he turned his passion for music into his own successful fanzine. A move to the more established music press in London followed first at Sounds and then at the NME before James was given the opportunity to set up Loaded, a title that essentially redefined male culture in the media.

Our chat covers the music, magazines and mayhem that James describes so well in his book, as well as his passion for football and Leeds United.

19 Jan 2024Jonathan Wilson00:40:56

Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt.

In today’s episode I'm joined by award winning writer and editor of The Blizzard, Jonathan Wilson as we discuss the recently revised edition of his book Angels with Dirty Faces, an incredible book which not only covers the history of Argentinian football to the present day, but also the history of the modern country itself. I really recommend it.

Beyond the book we cover Jonathan’s three football shirt choices, beginning with a nostalgic trip to Sunderland’s Roker Park during an epic FA Cup Run, an emotional African Cup of Nations win for Zambia and we round things off discussing the legacy of Maradona and the shirt he wore against England at the World Cup in Mexico in 1986.

Other than that, I guess that’s it! So until next time with my next guest, whoever that might be, whenever that might be… I’ll catch you soon.
