20 May 2021 | Pat Nevin - Part 1: The Accidental Footballer, Clyde, Chelsea. | 00:35:23
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the podcast that gets under the shirt. Today I meet the thinking man’s footballer - Mr Pat Nevin. During the podcast, Pat talks about his new book - The Accidental Footballer - as he reflects on his time growing up in Glasgow, being part of an academic family and his somewhat reluctant path to becoming a professional footballer. Pat was so generous with his time, sharing so many incredible stories that I wanted to break this podcast into two parts and make sure you got to hear everything he shared with me. Here in part one Pat talks about his time with Chelsea, reflecting on his first season in 83/84 through the choice of the home shirt the blues wore in that promotion season. We also cover Pat’s move to Everton following Chelsea’s relegation back to the second division in 1988. There we discuss the difficulties in maintaining a winning but ageing team and there’s a sliding doors moment for Pat as he mulls over a potential move to PSG. Part two arrives on Monday, where Pat discusses Scotland and his next two football shirt choices - be sure to follow Football Kit Memories wherever you listen to your podcasts so you don’t miss it. 22 Apr 2021 | Phil Differ - Comic Writer - Only An Excuse, BBC Scotland, Comedy Unit | 00:46:20
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt. Today I meet a legend of Scottish comedy, Mr Phil Differ. Since the 1980s, Phil has written and produced for some of the most memorable and iconic shows for stage and screen including Not The Nine O’Clock News, Spitting Image and Chewin The Fat. He’s perhaps best known for the long running Scottish football impression based satire - Only An Excuse, which began life on radio but transitioned to TV in 1993. In the following 27 years the show became a New Years Eve institution in Scotland - with main actor Jonathan Watson playing a host of characters including Frank McAvennie, Kenny Dalsglish and Sir Alex Ferguson just before the bells rang each year. In the podcast Phil talks to me about the show, his career and his latest play on the life of former Dundee United boss Jim McLean - which is rather aptly called Smile. The play is available to stream for a limited time on the Dundee Rep Theatre website - links to this here https://dundeerep.co.uk/whats-on/smile Later I asked Phil to pick three football shirts tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. We take a nostalgic look back at Scottish football in the sixties, with the hooped shirt Celtic wore in Lisbon in 67 and the national team goalkeeper jersey worn in the win over England at Wembley that sam year. We finish things off with a look at the Brazil shirts from the 1970 and 1982 world cups. Phil clearly loves his shirts. 13 May 2021 | Alex Stewart - Presenter/Producer at Tifo Football | 00:42:35
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt. Today I meet Alex Stewart, one of the presenters/producers behind Tifo Football, one of my favourite football channels on YouTube. During our chat, we cover Alex’s somewhat unusual route into the game as we find out how the time he spent in the Police, recognising patterns shaped his specialism as a self confessed ‘tactics nerd’. We also cover the origins of TIFO, its takeover by The Athletic and the joys of Football Manager. Later I asked Alex to pick three football shirts and tell me a little bit about what they mean to him. Clearly Alex is a bit of an aficionado, and he picked out some beauties including a Draper Tools & Hummel classic for Southampton, one of the first AS Roma shirts Francesco Totti wore and there’s something else with a big shark on it. Clearly the 90s represents the peak of Sachin’s football shirt fandom as his choices rather nicely span the full decade. 21 Feb 2023 | Martin O'Neill | 00:34:12
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt In today’s episode I'm joined by a true footballing great - Martin O’ Neill. Martin has recently published his excellent memoir - ‘On Days Like These’ and I was lucky enough to catch up with him to discuss his career through his choice of three different football shirts. A league and two time European Cup winner at Nottingham Forest, Martin went on to augment his trophy cabinet with yet more honours as a top level manager at clubs like Leicester City, Celtic and various others. Martin was captain of the famous Northern Ireland team that reached the second round of the World Cup in 1982, something he reprised as manager of the Republic of Ireland at Euro 2016. Martin was kind enough to put a lot of thought into his shirt choices and this, coupled with his unique storytelling ability means that listeners are in for a real treat today. 01 May 2023 | Alastair Campbell | 00:27:38
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt. In today’s episode I'm joined by a huge name in podcasting and politics, Alastair Campbell. Beginning his professional life as journalist, Alastair Campbell became more widely known as the chief communication strategist in successive Labour governments during the Tony Blair years. More recently, his podcast The Rest is Politics, which he co-hosts with former Conservative MP Rory Stewart has consistently topped the charts and has made politics more engaging and accessible for a mass audience, including me! We also cover his latest book ‘But What Can I Do?’ (out May 11th), written to arm the average person with ways and means of making a real difference in the complex and confusing world of politics. Beyond all this, of course, Alastair is famously a huge Burnley and Scotland fan and we talk about his experience of football through his choice of three very special football shirts. *** You can follow me on Instagram, or get in touch via Twitter or email. footballkitmemories@gmail.com https://Twitter.com/FKMPodcast https://instagram.com/footballkitmemories Watch on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@footballkitmemoriespodcast Alastair’s new book ‘But What Can I Do?’ is published by Penguin Books and is available from May 11th in all good bookstores https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/454259/but-what-can-i-do-by-campbell-alastair/9781529153330 Make sure you follow him on Twitter too: https://twitter.com/campbellclaret The music you heard was produced by Evil Ed check out his music on Bandcamp page https://eviledtheenthusiast.bandcamp.com/ There’s links to everything I’ve mentioned in the notes section And… finally thanks to you for listening. 25 May 2023 | James Brown - founding Editor of Loaded Magazine, author of 'Animal House' | 00:46:21
Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt. In today’s episode I'm joined by the founder and first editor of Loaded magazine - James Brown. James recently published his memoir ‘Animal House’ which covers his life both before and after the magazine and for me it was an excellent read in the way it honestly reflects both the highs and lows of celebrity and excess during the 1990s. James initially began writing in Leeds during the 1980s, where he turned his passion for music into his own successful fanzine. A move to the more established music press in London followed first at Sounds and then at the NME before James was given the opportunity to set up Loaded, a title that essentially redefined male culture in the media. Our chat covers the music, magazines and mayhem that James describes so well in his book, as well as his passion for football and Leeds United. Hello, Im Craig and welcome to another episode of Football Kit Memories - the football podcast that gets under the shirt. In today’s episode I'm joined by award winning writer and editor of The Blizzard, Jonathan Wilson as we discuss the recently revised edition of his book Angels with Dirty Faces, an incredible book which not only covers the history of Argentinian football to the present day, but also the history of the modern country itself. I really recommend it. Beyond the book we cover Jonathan’s three football shirt choices, beginning with a nostalgic trip to Sunderland’s Roker Park during an epic FA Cup Run, an emotional African Cup of Nations win for Zambia and we round things off discussing the legacy of Maradona and the shirt he wore against England at the World Cup in Mexico in 1986. *** The article covering Zambia’s moving win in the AFCON Final in 2012 can be found here https://www.theguardian.com/football/2012/feb/12/zambia-ivory-coast-africa-cup-nations-final You can follow me on Instagram, or get in touch via Twitter or email. footballkitmemories@gmail.com https://Twitter.com/FKMPodcast https://instagram.com/footballkitmemories Watch on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@footballkitmemoriespodcast You can get the revised edition of Angels With Dirty Faces https://www.orionbooks.co.uk/titles/jonathan-wilson/angels-with-dirty-faces/9781409144441/ Subscribe to The Blizzard Periodical, which Jonathan edits here https://theblizzard.co.uk/about/ Make sure you follow him on Twitter too: The music you heard was produced by Evil Ed check out his music on Bandcamp page https://eviledtheenthusiast.bandcamp.com/ There’s links to everything I’ve mentioned in the notes section And… finally thanks to you for listening.
