In this episode of Folk Tales we join Marisa Bell and Tim Norris from the boat sales arm of the boatfolk family, boatpoint.

Tim gives us glimpse of what life as a boat broker is really like and shares the story of how he came to be a Senior Broker at boatpoint Hamble, one of boatpoint's eight national offices based out of Deacons Marina.

Originally from Birmingham, Tim has spent most of his life on the South Coast, learning to sail The Hamble waters at a young age. After studying for a BSc at Plymouth University, Tim joined the boatpoint Hamble office as a trainee broker. And the rest, as they say, is history!

Jack is an inspiration to other young people like him and a great example of how important initiatives like boatgen will be in nurturing the next generation of boater.

In this episode of Folk Tales we join Haslar Marina's Bex Florence who has been catching up with Craig Coupe, Operations Director at The Boleh Trust.

The Boleh Trust, run entirely by volunteers, works to get disadvantaged people of all ages to sea in restored yacht, Boleh, so that they can be inspired by her ‘can do’ story. Established in 2008, 2023 marks the Trust's 15th year and was heralded by a Royal visitor in November 2022. HRH The Princess Royal visited  Haslar Marina to re-commission Boleh for charitable service and met with a number of volunteers and visitors on the day.

Craig and the team at The Boleh Trust are doing incredible work and we love hearing what they have been up to.

04 Apr 2023Season 4: Episode 5 - Getting to know the Charles Henry lifeboat00:25:12

In this episode of Folk Tales, we meet James Tyler who sat down with David Hirst at Royal Quays Marina to tell us about the former lifeboat, The Charles Henry, that his family own and now keep at our  marina.

The Charles Henry is an ex-RNLI Oakley 48 Class lifeboat. There were only five such lifeboats built, and she is now the only Oakley Class 48 lifeboat afloat having been lovingly restored by the father and son team of Mark and James Tyler. The Tylers acquired the vessel in unusual circumstances - they saw it for sale on eBay! 

The Charles Henry was built in 1968 and her official number was 1015, and her operational number was 48-12.  She saw service with the RNLI at Selsey from 1969 until 1983, and was then stationed at Baltimore in Co. Cork between 1983 and 1987.  Her penultimate service was in 1986 when she went to assist the ore-carrier MV Kowloon Bridge off the coast of Cork in what was described as a "phenomenal sea state".  

Mark and James are now the owners of the Charles Henry and have plans to share this historic boat with the local community in North East England. As a professional marine engineer, James is well qualified to be custodian of the Charles Henry and shares his passion in this episode of Folk Tales.

Today's theme is "Give" and we're speaking with Alex Sergison from the Portland-based business, Adventure4All. Adventure4All uses adventure sports such as paddle boarding, rock climbing and coasteering to help people push themselves and their boundaries, to learn and grow and build confidence.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Alex and his team have helped many children and young adults who are struggling to cope with their mental health following extended periods of lockdown and re-engaging with their peers having been out of school for so long.

Alex also talks about his own experience with anxiety and depression and how he is striving to create a safe place to discuss mental health for his children despite finding it difficult to talk about himself.

Honest Conversations is a Folk Tales mini-series focused on all things mental wellbeing as part of Mental Health Awareness Week 2021.

Today's theme is "Connect", and we're chatting with Tom and Matt, founders of the hugely successful charitable coffee business, Frontline Coffee.

Frontline Coffee was founded in 2018 by firefighters Tom and Matt to offer support to fellow members of the emergency services suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. What started as offering a safe place to come for a cuppa and a chat has become a coffee empire selling beans and make at home coffee products followed by the opening of the first Frontline coffee shop on Portland at the end of last summer and the ‘coffee hydrant’ trailer by Portland Castle during spring 2021.

Proceeds from the sale of the coffee beans go to various emergency services support charities such as The Fire Fighters Charity, Laura Hyde Foundation and RNLI.

In this episode of Folk Tales we speak with Celine Gamble of the Zoological Society of London and Maria Hayden-Jones of Bangor University about the pioneering project that sees Conwy Marina becoming a focal point for the rewilding of native oysters.

In April 2021, 1,300 native oysters were returned to waters in Conwy Bay. Part of an ambitious restoration project known as the Wild Oysters Project, the aim is to bring back these ‘ocean superheroes’ from the brink of extinction.

The Wild Oysters Project is a partnership between ZSL (Zoological Society of London), Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) and British Marine. It aims to help restore healthy, resilient coastal waters around the UK. The nurseries are currently set up in various sites including one at Conwy Marina in conjunction with Bangor University. 

Celine and Maria take us through the project, its aims, and the vital role that oysters will play in the safeguarding of our waters for generations to come.

Following the tragic suicide of his son, George, in December 2020, Tim set-up Sail2Help to  raise awareness of mental health issues among young people, and importantly raise funds in order to offer much-needed support to those that need it most. Working to support Papyrus, the UK’s main suicide prevention charity for young persons,  Sail2Help seeks to help fund projects that aim to reduce the incidence of suicide.

Tim shares his story with us and his belief in the the power of sailing to help provide much-needed respite for those suffering from the loss of a loved one. This episode may be triggering for some listeners and we ask that you please decide if this is suitable for you before listening.

She recalls what it was like being diagnosed with cancer at just 15 years old,  and shares what working with the Trust and being on the water has meant for her.

In September 2021, boatfolk and the Andrew Simpson Foundation took to the boatfolk stage at the Southampton International Boat Show to launch boatgen, a joint initiative aimed at developing the UK's next generation of boater. They were joined on stage by Olympic Gold Medallist, Eilidh McIntyre and boatgen ambassador, Tim Long and since then have been on a mission to engage young people from all walks of life around the life-changing benefits of getting afloat.

Richard and Ellie share their background and experiences in this episode of Folk Tales and explain why boatgen is such an important initiative as we look ahead at the future of our sport.
