15 Dec 2022Our foHRsight on hybrid work00:34:57

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

It’s our first episode so what better topic to talk about than hybrid work! It’s dominated the headlines and the work of HR leaders for the last 18 months and has certainly been a big area of focus for our work as well.

In this episode we start by sharing the framework we use to think about the new world of work – it’s also how we structure our newsletter foHRsight.

  1. Building the Worker Ecosystem
  2. Enabling Talent to Get the Work Done
  3. The Learning-Agile Organization
  4. Wellbeing in the Workplace

Following a check-in about why we’re both so excited about our new podcast, we talk about the opportunity that hybrid work brings to organizations and how they should think about it.

This includes:

  • The crossroads we are at with organizations pushing for a return to the office while many employees are looking to hang on to the flexibility they have enjoyed over the last couple of years.
  • The risk of thinking that hybrid work is all about the return to the office. It’s not. Hybrid work provides a long term talent play that can make a difference to your organization.
  • The importance of being deliberate about where and when work gets done.

22 Dec 2022What is the office for?00:22:16

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

Following a query from one of our listeners (thank you!), in this our second episode, we share more thoughts about how the office can be used as part of your hybrid strategy.

Before we get in to that we start with a check-in and share what we have learnt in 2022. For Naomi it’s the importance of connection and for Mark the value of human-centred leadership – more to follow in future episodes!

What is the value of the office?

You’ll hear Naomi talking about the importance of leaders articulating “they why”. A mandatory return to the office “just because” isn’t enough.

Naomi goes on to outline some ideas of the activity you can encourage people to do at the office.

  1. Deep collaboration – as outlined in Gustavo Razzetti’s book Remote not Distant
  2. On-the-job learning
  3. Exchanging human energy and relationship building

29 Dec 2022Our reflections on the year that was 202200:27:14

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

How did we get to Episode 3 so quickly!

In this seasonal episode we share our reflections on the year that was 2022, but before we got in to that it was a long overdue introduction to our dogs (Tilly, Cori and Charlie – images available on Instagram!) and did a check-in on our favourite Holiday traditions.

You’ll find a recipe to bread sauce here - https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/bread-sauce-0.

The year that was 2022

After a slow start, our sense was that 2022 was part of the much-needed process of developing a new (better) set of norms for work.  This involved a lot of test-and-learn, experimentation and maybe even a little bit of ‘paralysis from analysis’.

This is perhaps understandable as many leaders were cautious about setting clear expectations when they weren’t sure how their people would react – particularly in a very tight labour market.

It will be interesting how 2023 unfolds – we’ll cover that in a future episode!

05 Jan 2023Our Predictions for 202300:31:50

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

Happy New Year – wishing all of our listeners a wonderful 2023 as we continue to work together to make work better.

In this week’s first episode of 2023, we bring in the year with our hopes and predictions for 2023.

As Scott Galloway says, predictions is a “sh*tty business”, but it’s still an important exercise to create a good sense of the challenges and opportunities ahead. We focus our conversation on three themes we expect to be a big deal in 2023:

  1. Workplace learning
  2. Leadership development
  3. Well-being – and the increasing overlap we’re seeing with the DEIB agenda

12 Jan 2023Productivity and Prioritization00:31:02

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

The start of the year is the time when many organizations are rolling out the priorities for their teams. In this week’s episode we make the case for thinking about prioritization in a broader sense beyond the top corporate goals.

Many leaders don’t feel their teams are being productive (see Microsoft report below) and while this is contrary to the views of individuals, it does present an opportunity to focus on measuring outcomes.

Taking the time to think about how you can simplify often complex tasks at work and streamline meetings can help people to prioritize their time and ultimately be more productive.

As next week’s guest Gustavo Razzetti says “… busyness is a wicked problem.”

19 Jan 2023Remote Not Distant with guest Gustavo Razzetti00:55:43

Let’s Talk About - Remote Not Distant

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

We’re excited to have our first guest on this week’s episode of the foHRsight podcast – Gustavo Razzetti. Gustavo is on a mission “to help people to do the best work of their lives” and in this episode Naomi had the opportunity to chat with him about his new book Remote Not Distant.

The book provides a provides a roadmap for organizations and team that want to build a strong culture that helps team thrive in a hybrid workplace.

There were so many great take-aways from the conversation … here is just a flavour:

  • The importance of companies deciding where and when work gets done based on the work not the schedule
  • The myth that collaboration has to be done in person … not to mention Naomi’s bug bear that cultures can’t be maintained in a hybrid environment and likely need to evolve
  • Proximity does not automatically lead to belonging
  • The importance of discipline in creating what people really want - freedom

You can learn more about Gustavo and his work at Fearless Cultures here – https://gustavorazzetti.com/

And don’t forget it’s COMPETITION TIME … the first 10 listeners who share a post on LinkedIn about this episode will win a signed copy of Gustavo’s excellent book! Don’t forget to tag Naomi and/or Mark!

26 Jan 2023Building the Worker Ecosystem00:22:28

Building the Worker Ecosystem – formerly known as recruitment!

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

We all know how much the world of work has changed in recent years, but the way we attract talent has arguably seen the most disruption. We call this building the worker ecosystem at future foHRward.

In this episode of foHRsight, Naomi and Mark chat about how the tight labour market and new innovations have changed the world of talent acquisition with emerging ways to tap into talent pools including gig workers, alumni and retirees.

We advocate for a buy, build and bot (and borrow, which we didn't outwardly say but referred to with gig workers) talent strategy to create a more robust approach to talent management.

Introduction to career cushioning and the benefits of having a plan B

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

Another buzz phrase makes its way in to the work vernacular – career cushioning! We saw this one popping up in a few articles so thought it would be a good one to delve in to.

Essentially it means having a plan B to help keep yourself employable in a turbulent employment market. Of course that has implications for companies who are working hard to hold on to their top talent … but as we conclude it seems a sensible strategy for individuals to take!

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

In this week’s episode, Naomi has the opportunity to chat with former future foHRward conference keynote speaker, Gary A. Bolles. Gary is author of "The Next Rules of Work", Chair for the Future of Work, Singularity University and Co-founder, eParachute.com.

In this far-ranging conversation, Gary shares his perspective about trends or threats (he doesn’t like the term predictions!), what he calls the WorkNet (what we call the worker ecosystem), the important roles of leaders (or what he prefers to call the Team Guide) and shares some examples of organizations who are adopting these new ways of working.

He also explores the impact of exponential change when it comes to changes like AI and how we should be thinking about it as a tool – not a partner or a work colleague – and he also has an interesting analogy for black swan events.

16 Mar 2023What is Human-Centred Leadership?00:36:59

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

In today’s episode we unpack one of our favourite topics … human-centred leadership – a term that gets mixed feedback from people but an approach to leadership that is certainly building traction.

We share our simple definition – taking care of the people so they people can take care of the business.

We outline why we need human-centred leadership more than ever and how organizations can think about introducing this approach to their organizations.

23 Mar 2023How To Communicate, Connect and Contribute with Guest Liane Davey00:50:59

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

Today’s episode we get to chat with Liane Davey who is bold mission to radically change how people communicate, connect and contribute so they can achieve amazing things together!

They have an energizing conversation (filled with some fantastic metaphors) about hybrid work, the return to office and what has changed for leaders and organizations. She introduces us to a new term for leaders - performance permanence where they don’t believe their people are being productive – and encourages all leaders to think about defining performance outcomes more broadly.

They dig deep into productive tension, healthy conflict based on insights from Liane’s 2019 book The Good Fight. They also talk about the importance of building trust through community when it comes to team effectiveness and the role HR can play in building productive conflict.

They also explore burnout inspired by Liane’s campaign NO-vember and she offers some of her favourite productivity hacks.

30 Mar 2023The Downsides of Bossware00:27:38

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

Bossware, workplace spyware or tattleware is another one of those trends we’ve seen emerge in recent years.

We share background to a Canadian case in January where an employee was ordered to pay a fine for time theft that was picked up through monitoring software.

https://decisions.civilresolutionbc.ca/crt/crtd/en/item/523029/index.do

While there are elements of monitoring that can be helpful when it comes to individual productivity, we express our concern about the evasiveness of this sort of technology and how it can be abused by companies.

Our view is that the bigger challenge is around measuring productivity and we point to the research from Microsoft report and their term productivity paranoia (see below), but we do challenge ourselves to explore any benefits it can provide. Spoiler alert … there aren’t many and we’re fans of macromanagement!

27 Apr 2023Using Emotional Intelligence to be a More Human-Centred Leader00:32:46

In this week’s podcast, we explore the topic of emotional intelligence as an important element of human-centred leadership and talk through the framework popularized by Salovey and Mayer.

  1. Knowing your own emotions
  2. Managing your emotions
  3. Motivating yourself
  4. Recognizing emotions in others
  5. Handling relationships

The first 3 steps are very much focused on developing self-awareness and we develop the case for being an emotional scientist rather than an emotional judge.

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.

In this week’s episode, Naomi Titleman is joined by special guest Minette Norman who is an author, consultant and former Silicon Valley executive.

Minette recently launched her second book, The Boldly Inclusive Leader. In the podcast she reflects on her career as a leader in technology firms and how badly prepared new leaders are to lead particularly when it comes to leading diverse and multi-cultural teams.

They talk about the importance of human-centric leadership and how multi-faceted it is. Leaders are human too and it’s important to acknowledge that leaders will make mistakes and need to learn from these mistakes. Human leadership is also about recognizing that nothing gets done without the people in our organizations so it’s critical to ensure the organization creates an environment where people can thrive.

The most important first step on a journey of human-centred leadership is self-awareness so we can understand ourselves and understand our emotions. Minette then talks through the behaviours inclusive leaders should demonstrate to be an inclusive leader.

This means evolving beyond the (now traditional) Ulrich model and finding an approach that is much more adaptive to a set of changing circumstances to get to the depth of the problem that needs to be solved.

This includes both how teams are structured with cross-functional teams, using systems and design thinking techniques (that involve end users) and using experiments and pilots.

It also involves HR changing its view that it is a service function and learning to “say no to get behind the bigger yes.”

04 Apr 2024Layoffs, lazy-girl jobs and more layoffs00:41:01

In this week’s episode of foHRsight from future foHRward, hosts Mark Edgar and Naomi Titleman Colla have the opportunity to connect and share insights from 3 stories that have been hitting the news waves in their community foHRsight+.

The first article from Business Insider article from middle of February picks up the theme that the power balance is perhaps shifting and that some companies are using that to bring people back to the office and, unfairly, targeting people who work remotely in lay-off decisions.

We explore the concept of proximity bias and the responsibility we have as individuals and organizations to avoid this becoming a real thing.

Find the link to the full article here!

We shifted girls to explore an article in Toronto Life about our changing expectations of work sharing stories a bunch of 20 to 30 year olds for whom quiet quitting, lazy-girl jobs, bare-minimum Mondays, weekend Wednesdays are a thing. We conclude these people aren’t lazy, but just making different choices that we need to respect.

Finally we discussed news in Fast Company about Zoom’s decision to layoff its DEI team. We discussed DEI at a recent foHRsight+ roundtable and were very encouraged by how resolute people were about continuing this important work.

“We're going to lead with inclusion, because we need a world where inclusion is front and center. And that means inclusion for all, not some people. Everyone has a right to feel that they belong in the workplace and that they are included.”

We provide our views and share our insights on why organizations need to maintain a focus on this important topic.
