Episode Summary:

In this episode of the Flying Midwest Podcast, we continue our AirVenture series with a deep dive into one of the most important topics in aviation today: fuel. We're joined by Chris D’Acosta from Swift Fuels to discuss the future of unleaded aviation fuel and the steps being taken to remove lead from our skies.

Chris covers who Swift Fuels is, the work they’ve done to develop unleaded fuel alternatives, and the STCs available for pilots and aircraft owners. He also gives us a look at where the industry is heading and what it means for pilots moving forward.

Plus, we celebrate a major milestone for our former host Trevor, welcome a new Patreon member, and share exciting updates about our return to the regular podcast format in just a couple of weeks!

Welcome to the start of the second year of the Flying Midwest Podcast!

On this episode, we are joined by Ferry Pilot, Author, and Reality TV Star Kerry McCauley. We had such a great conversation with Kerry, that we had to split it into two separate episodes. In this first episode, we hear a bit about Kerry's introduction to aviation, how he got into ferry flying, and some of the tense moments he has had on some of these flights.

Kerry will join us for a second episode in two weeks. In that episode, he shares more about his books, his time on the discovery channel rogram "Dangerous Flights," and he shares his unpopular opinion with us.

Check out Kerry's website to learn how you can get your copy of his books, "Ferry Pilot," and "Dangerous Flights."

16 Oct 2023Episode 45: The Man Who Loved the Skies - in Memory of Loren Jones00:56:55

In this special episode of the Flying Midwest Podcast, we pay heartfelt tribute to the remarkable life and legacy of Loren Jones, an exceptional aviator who left an indelible mark on the aviation community. Our last conversation with Loren took place at this year's Airventure, where he graciously shared his unwavering passion for aviation with us during one of our FMP Live from OSH recordings. Not only was Loren a source of inspiration, but he was also a skilled Gyrocopter builder and pilot. In a testament to his expertise, he was awarded a well-deserved 2nd Place Lindy Award in the Gyroplan category.

Loren's legacy extends to the countless lives he touched as an instructor, guiding aspiring aviators with patience, expertise, and a genuine love for aviation.

On October 8th, Loren was involved in a devastating crash of his beloved Gyrocopter in southern Minnesota, resulting in a crash into the Minnesota River. Though rescue workers displayed incredible bravery in retrieving Loren from the river after the accident, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, leaving an irreplaceable void in the aviation world.

Join us in this emotional episode as we celebrate Loren Jones's lasting impact and reflect on his legacy in the world of aviation. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Loren's family and friends during this challenging time. As we commemorate the life of a true aviation legend, we encourage our listeners to share their own stories, memories, and tributes on our social media channels. Fly high, Loren, and may your inspiration continue to guide and uplift generations of aviators to come.

    05 Sep 2023Episode 42: Girls in Aviation Day 01:09:34

Come one, come all to experience the joy of aviation! In this week’s episode, we were delighted to speak with a previous guest, Ambyr Peterson, as well as Mina Carlson, about Women in Aviation International’s event called Girls in Aviation Day. This is a worldwide event held annually by local WAI chapters for girls (and boys!) to experience different areas of aviation.

The Stars of the North chapter of Minnesota currently hosts the largest GIAD event, and they are proud to announce it will be back this year on September 23, 2023 at Flying Cloud Airport (FCM). Along with discussing how the event operates, we also discuss the history of WAI, the global and local impact of GIAD, and what new things you can expect going to the Stars of the North GIAD this year!

If you’re planning on going to the Minnesota GIAD, please sign up in advance at https://starsofthenorth.org/girls-in-aviation-day

    28 Jul 2024Airventure '24 Touch and Go - Information Foxtrot00:09:12

Why have one podcast hosting team, when we can have three!

Welcome to day six of our installment of minisodes "Touch and Go." Each day of EAA's AirVenture, we will recap out day on the grounds, share some news, and preview what is in store tomorrow.

We are thrilled to be joined by AG and RH from Opposing Bases, and Ben and Ted from the Midlife Pilot podcasts.

We had the privilege of having our last full interview of the show be with the guys from Opposing Bases. In addition to that, the OB live show today provided a unique opportunity to bring our three podcasting crews together for a monumental moment in aviation podcasting history. We have a brief wrap up over an impromptu cheese curd taco lunch.

Jim starts his journey back to Minnesota after the interview, and Badger will meet back up with his family to enjoy the afternoon and night airshows.

We can't begin to thank the crews of Opposing Bases and Midlife Pilot for joining us for Information Foxtrot!

We will have one more Touch and Go with the Badger clan to get their reactions to this year's night airshow.

    01 Apr 2025Episode 84: Fool Me Once...You Can't Get Fooled Again00:52:40

It’s that time of year again! The Flying Midwest Podcast proudly presents our 4th annual April Fools’ episode, packed with satirical aviation news, absurd events, and plenty of laughs. We love bringing you these stories every year as a way to kick back, let loose, and celebrate the lighter side of aviation.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! Jim puts Madi and Badger in the hot seat with a round of aviation-themed “Would You Rather” questions, leading to comedic chaos and questionable decision-making. Then, we close out the episode with a bold twist—it’s our turn to answer the question we ask every guest: What is your aviation unpopular opinion?

We also want to take a moment to offer a huge thank you to our friends at the Opposing Bases podcast for their help with our intro. And a special shoutout to Bryan Turner of Just Plane Silly—while he couldn’t join us this year, he’s been a huge part of our April Fools’ antics in the past, and we truly appreciate his support on our aviation content journey.

🎧 Buckle up for an episode full of fun, aviation nonsense, and maybe even some unexpected wisdom. Happy April Fools’ Day from The Flying Midwest Podcast!

We then sit down and chat with Cade Halle about the medical side of AOPA's Pilot Protection Services.

Finally, we learn all about the initiatives in AOPA's "You Can Fly" programs from Dan Pathman. From High School STEM, to scholarships, to rusty pilot courses, AOPA covers all the bases.

Check out all the links below to see how AOPA is working for all of us.

Our video of our interviews with AOPA will be live on our YouTube later this week.

    02 Oct 2023Remembering Richard McSpadden00:57:17

With heavy hearts we remember and pay tribute to a truly remarkable individual, Richard McSpadden. The aviation world has been shaken by the sudden loss of this extraordinary man, whose impact on the industry was profound. We reflect on the life and contributions of Richard, a former commander of the USAF Thunderbirds and a vice president at AOPA, where he served as the director of the Air Safety Institute.

On the afternoon of Sunday, October 1st, 2023, Richard was involved in an aircraft crash near Lake Placid, New York. The Cessna 177RG he was in experienced an emergency upon take off and was unable to make it back to the airport. He and another pilot did not survive.

Richard's legacy in the aviation community is nothing short of remarkable. Richard's aircraft incident early analysis videos have left an indelible mark on the aviation community. Through these videos, he shared his knowledge and expertise, providing valuable lessons and fostering a culture of safety within the aviation world. His contributions will continue to guide and inspire pilots for generations to come. Our podcast had the privilege to feature him as a guest. Our paths crossed at Airventure, an event that serves as a focal point for aviation enthusiasts. His warmth and generosity were evident as he graciously spent time chatting with us and even facilitated introductions for future interviews.

In memory of Richard and as a token of our gratitude for his contributions, we are republishing our interview with him from this past summer. We hope that by sharing his insights and experiences once more, we can continue to benefit from the wisdom he imparted to us.

To Richard's family, friends, and the entire AOPA community, our hearts go out to you during this difficult time. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Richard's presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will forever soar in the skies of aviation.

08 Mar 2025Episode 82: What WE Learned about Flying (The Hard Way)00:57:58

In this episode of the Flying Midwest Podcast, we’re flying solo—but with a purpose. Inspired by our last conversation with airshow legend Rob Reider, we decided to turn the mic on ourselves and reflect on some of the most valuable lessons we’ve learned in the cockpit.

From equipment failures and unusual attitudes to pilot errors and close calls, aviation has a way of teaching us things that can’t be found in a textbook. Whether it’s the importance of staying ahead of the aircraft, learning how to handle the unexpected, or the moments that remind us why we love flying, these real-life experiences shape us into better pilots.

We’re pulling from our own logbooks, sharing firsthand stories, and breaking down the lessons that can make all of us safer, smarter, and more prepared aviators. Whether you’re a seasoned pilot or just starting your journey, this episode is packed with insights that might just save you some trouble down the road.

So, strap in and join us for some hangar talk, hard-earned wisdom, and maybe even a few laughs along the way.
