“Get really clear about how you want to spend your time. Don’t get roped in to attending every holiday party if you don’t want to”.

Not only is it Thanksgiving but it’s the end of Q4, finance professionals are closing off the year’s sales gaps, new budgets are being set while unspent budgets are being used as quickly as possible – plus there are the school and Christmas/New Year breaks to deal with. That's why our guest has plenty to say about how we can all start to put OURSELVES first and reclaim our lives.

ABOUT OUR GUEST:

As the USA downs tools for their annual Thanksgiving holiday, our subject matter expert is Regan Walsh, an executive and life coach who’s been featured in Harvard Business Review, Forbes and Fast Company. Regan advises professionals overwhelmed by their overtime and underwhelmed by their downtime. She talks to Jennifer Gardner (AICPA & CIMA, USA) about the practical steps to “shed the shoulds” at what can be a really stressful time of year.

08 Mar 2019International Women's Day Special "The Future Of The Profession" with Oracle, AICPA & CIMA, and The Changemaker's Playbook.00:28:50

In this special IWD2019 episode, four experts share their thoughts on tech and the future of the accounting and finance professions. Hear from Oracle's Kimberly Ellison-Taylor and "Changemaker's Playbook" author Amy Radin. We also feature Jennifer Gardner and Clar Rosso of the AICPA & CIMA. There'll be more at our Women's Global Leadership Summit in late 2019 in California.

In our first conversation, Kim Drumgo (Diversity and Inclusion Manager for AICPA & CIMA) talks to Kimberly Ellison-Taylor, a global strategy leader at Oracle, USA. Kimberly has been recognized by Accounting Today as one of the “Top People in Public Accounting—2018” and by CPA Practice Advisor as one of the “2018 Most Powerful Women in Accounting.” She was the youngest person, fifth woman, and first person of colour to serve as chairman in the AICPA’s 130-year history. They discuss the profession's changing roles, how technology is fuelling them, and the skills they'll require.

Next, Kim speaks to "Change Maker's Playbook" author Amy Radin. A C-Suite advisor, AICPA Board Member and global speaker, Amy shares her insights on facing change head-on, how to fuel growth, and becoming a changemaker for one's organisation.

We also feature a conversation between AICPA & CIMA  Communications Manager Jennifer Gardner and Clar Rosso, the association's Executive Vice-President for Engagement, Learning and Innovation. They discuss the recent release of the World Economic Forum's "Future of Jobs" report, the opportunities that learning opens up for professionals, intentionality,  and the skills outlook for 2022.

QUOTES:

"Technology has really changed how we would have traditionally gone about our careers" - Kymberly Ellison-Taylor

"The more diverse your team is, in terms of background, perspective, gender, where they grew up, all of those factors are going to feed a stronger chance of success because you're benefiting from diverse opinions and backgrounds"- Amy Radin.

"Learning doesn't always have to be formal so if you spend the time doing the learning and developing the skills that you need, there's a tremendous amount of opportunity "- Jennifer Gardner

"We have to be really intentional. Think about what am I doing today that's going to help me develop as an individual and draw value for my organisation...really think about where do I want to be and how do I get there?" - Clar Rosso

04 Sep 2019Fixing Miscommunication. Getting Through with leadership trainer Julie Holunga.00:41:56

"It's so imperative that we are deliberate in how we communicate, that we think about it and NOT just take things at face value."

We're all connected but how do we 'get through' to people better? What's the difference between miscommunication, missed communication and mismatched communication? Why's it important to talk to someone the way THEY need to be talked to, rather than the way WE want to be talked to? Returning guest Julie Holunga tells AICPA & CIMA's newest podcast presenter Scott Kellam about how understanding the difference between internal and external processors can transform the way colleagues, peers, family and friends 'connect' with each other. Aubrey Joachim FCMA CGMA MBA was the first CIMA President from outside the UK and Ireland. He discusses finance transformation, agile accounting and why he thinks it's time we dropped the word 'accountant' from our lexicon - because the word simply doesn't convey the scope and pivotal importance of today's professionals in the finance function. He shares insights on his innovative work to foster and scale startup mindsets that can drive change right across large enterprises. * how Blockchain is just one of many enabling technologies that companies are needing to build on for the future,

* ways that this model can be used for more than just Blockchain – but for ANY technology that an organisation may be adopting or evaluating.

29 Mar 2019"Adaptive Mindsets" with Gretchen Pisano and Alexis Robin of pLink Leadership (Frederick, USA)00:26:21

"What you realise is that people don't mind when people have clear boundaries. In fact, they APPRECIATE them".

GBD51 Gretchen Pisano and Alexis Robin are co-founders of pLink Leadership, a US-based management consultancy that provides leadership-development, executive coaching, and curriculum-creation. AICPA & CIMA's Jennifer Gardner hears from our guests about an adaptive mindset. Why it matters? How it helps us decide to intervene on behalf of ourselves,  speed up how we adapt to a changing world and accommodate volatility in the workplace.

CONCLUDING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH 2019.

Throughout March we've featured a bonus selection of interviews with women who've become movers and shakers in the accounting, finance and business professional sphere. Episodes every Wednesday as usual with 'Friday Focus' shows for some extra weekend inspiration.

WE DISCUSS:

  • Boundaries.
  • Making sure staff mindsets are as “nimble and lean” as the company.
  • Developing our own 'complexity of mind' by inviting insights and inputs from those around us.
  • Challenging our own internal biases.
  • Taking an active role in change.
  • The strengths that women bring.
  • How women are naturally wired to have an adaptive mindset - but how this can sometimes get in the way too.

12 Jun 2019“Reality Bytes: Demystifying Digital Transformation” with Waqqas Mahmood of BakerTilly (Washington, USA) 00:29:31

GBD62.  Waqqas Mahmood leads Advanced Technology & Intelligent Automation at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP. He tells Kyle Hannan (AICPA & CIMA, UK) about the basic jargon of RPA and AI, why you should understand the tech before you put it all together, and how to identify the goals of the digital transformation. He also outlines his "3 Fs" process for fighting the factors of failure.

18 Feb 2020Strategic Thinking with Sil Garaventa of US Foods00:21:28

"It's really important to not just develop a strategy and let it be. Make sure that you ACTIVATE that strategy."

(#97)  Strategy. One word, many definitions, almost infinite possibilities. What is it? What makes it work? Where do you start? During her time here at the Association, Jennifer Gardner recorded this conversation with Sil Garaventa, Director of Sales Support for US Foods in North Carolina. This is a high-level exploration of strategy: when a company has resource limitations, the team has to make choices around where to focus. At the heart of it, that's strategy.

With experience at US Foods, the AICPA and elsewhere, Sil Garaventa is a strategy consultant who helps tackle an organisation's most critical and challenging problems, defining strategic direction in a disrupted and rapidly changing business environment. 29 Sep 2022FLP 176. CGMA FLP Assessment Models00:18:37

Colin Ward is the Senior Manager - Assessment & Product Development for the AICPA & CIMA Global Finance Leadership Programme. He talks to Kevin Gormley about the assessment model within The CGMA FLP.

They discuss what students should expect when learning through this pathway and how this develops the skills and competencies needed for a career in Accounting & Finance.

The CGMA Finance Leadership Programme (FLP) is the new online pathway to the prestigious Chartered Institute of Management Accountants’ Professional Qualification, launched in the UK in early September.

FLP addresses the increased demand to deliver remote access and flexible self-paced online learning. It will develop future generations of Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation holders, required for driving business performance and supporting economic recovery.
