15 Feb 2022 | Fishing the DMV Episode 13: Whiskey & Fish Tales | 00:55:37
Fishing the DMV Episode 13: whiskey & fish tales the RIP Canoe story. In this Fishing the DMV Podcast Jared Mounts and long-time friend Steve Morris share their canoe adventure mishaps on local rivers over the years. Jared had his eye on a shiny new Indian River canoe at Sparks Sporting Goods in Martinsburg, West Virginia in the late 90’s. With a little extra money in the bank, the decision to buy an engagement ring or canoe was weighed as all good decision makers do. After careful consideration, the green 17-foot canoe was strapped to the top of the pick-up truck! This canoe served its purpose on many bodies of water including the Potomac River from Damn 4 to Shepherdstown, Sleepy Creek, North Fork of the Shenandoah River, and a handful of trips through the Trough! Join us to hear about their adventures on the water including the final resting place of the ole Indian River Canoe! Disclaimer: All stories shared in this podcast are true and only slightly embellished due to the number of times it has been told. Eyewitness accounts can confirm most of the details! One should NOT try to duplicate the events that took place. Enjoy!

On this episode of fishing the DMV we talk to Michael Bartgis. Michael Bartgis is seasoned kayak angler with a passion for inshore saltwater fishing. What started out as a way to get a little more water access turned into an addictive hobby that has led me up and down the coast and abroad chasing fish from a kayak. Along the way I have made some great friends from sites like www.snaggedline.com, put over 300,000 miles on my vehicles, caught a lot of fish, and even ran the largest kayak fishing tournament in Maryland for 7 years to raise money for local charities. I’ve been so consumed with kayak fishing over the past decade that it’s spawned other hobbies like reel repair and rod building; always on the quest for the rod with the right action and handle length for kayak fishing. I greatly enjoy taking new kayak anglers out on the water and can proudly say I taught my wife and son how to kayak fish. On this episode of Fishing the DMV Jeff Kelble sits down with VDWR Biologist John Odenkirk to discuss fish, the health of the Shenandoah River, and some less known things that go on behind the scenes when river systems hit a downward spiral. Jeff spent over 6 years guiding the Shenandoah River before heading up the Shenandoah Riverkeeper position for 8 years starting in 2006 when he saw the river taking a nosedive. As Riverkeeper he built coalitions of river users, river related businesses, government officials and legal partners. Jeff worked to write and enforce effective environmental laws and regulations, and employ a litigation and advocacy strategy which over ten years solved dozens of complex pollution issues threatening public use of the Shenandoah River. This experience led to an opportunity to serve as the President of the Potomac Riverkeeper Network defending our Nation’s river for another 8 years. Jeff is currently the owner and operator of Ashby Gap Adventures. We as anglers rightfully get excited when a fishery is not producing quality catches but it’s important to know there are many folks working hard to advocate for this great resource! Andrew grew up living minutes from Pony Pasture and has spent over 15 years wading through the James for smallies. Andrew learned how to fish for smallmouth by casting green Yamamotos all summer long but discovered fly fishing while in school at Virginia Tech. He fell in love with the sport and spent a summer and fall working as a fly fishing guide at the A Bar A Ranch in Southern Wyoming. While he favors fly fishing for most conditions, he loves all styles of fishing and still spin fishes to keep his pops happy…and because sometimes you just have to cover water quickly.
