15 Oct 2020Ep 34: Making the Most of Time on the Water, with Darrin Schenck01:18:47
Darrin Schenck is an avid fly fisherman and head coach of the Arizona State University racquetball team. We had originally planned to talk mostly about his recent fishing trip to Utah and Idaho. When the fishing success turned out to be less than expected, we decided to switch gears a bit and branch out more in the conversation. What followed was a discussion of what happens when the fishing is lackluster, some of the better trips Darrin has been on, and how he makes the most of the time he has left to fish with his father. I also got to hear about how his favorite fish isn’t the biggest one he has caught, and why the best memories don’t always correspond to the measurements of the fish itself. Near the end, we also get into the pros and cons of trying to turn fishing into a career. All in all, it was a rich and thought-provoking conversation that took some really enjoyable turns.   Website: darrinchatter.com Email: darrin@darrinchatter.com Instagram: @darrinchatter Twitter: @darrinchatter Linkedin: Darrin Chatter Learn more about your ad choices. We cover why someone would want to use trout spey tactics, different fly options and how to fish them, lines and leaders, how to move through the water, and much more. 14 Apr 2022Ep 73: Darkhouse Spearing in MN, with the Modern Carnivore Crew01:34:29
This episode first aired on the Modern Carnivore Podcast, hosted by Mark Norquist. Mark was on Fish Untamed in 2021 (episode 51) and invited me up to MN to try my hand at darkhouse spearing. I decided to take him up on his offer this past January. In a nutshell, darkhouse spearing involves sitting over a large hole in the ice and throwing spears at passing fish. In reality, though, there’s much more to it, and we dive into it in this episode. This episode was recorded in a brewery after one of our days on the ice at -37 degrees. Mike Raether, who first appeared back on episode 22 to talk about using pack goats for backcountry fly fishing, is back again. This time, he came on to talk about backcountry navigation. Of course, it’s not really possible to actually learn how to navigate with a map and compass over an hour-long audio podcast, so this episode is more about the pros and cons of digital and paper maps, when you might use each one, where to find good topo maps, helpful tools to pair with a map, and some tips and tricks to be more confident while trying to find your way around.   Resources Mike mentions: Be Expert with Map and Compass by Bjorn Kjellstrom USGS.gov natgeomaps.com caltopo.com brunton.com silva-usa.com suunto.com geocaching.com garmin.com ihikegps.com Learn more about your ad choices.
