04 Oct 2022 | #7: TRUE LEADERSHIP: Training Your Team is an Investment | 00:17:37
Training people is an investment in your business…it addresses everything that has to do with your company's success. NOT training your staff is like not investing in your own business. And as an entrepreneur, you really have to think about the cost of not doing it. Training is the key to ensuring the outcome you want for your staff’s well being and the health of the business - they are interconnected. Episode 7 - True Leadership: Training your Team is an Investment is the second episode in a series that I am doing called TRUE LEADERSHIP. This 5-part series of mini-episodes is being released throughout the next two months. In this second mini-episode, I’m talking about the second aspect of leadership which is all centered on this fact - investing in training your team!

09 Apr 2024 | #82: CREATING LEADERS: Rebel Leaders: Why Being Non-Traditional Works Best | 01:01:39
NEW SERIES premiering soon on Finding the Upside! We are working on our brand new series “Creating Leaders” where I will be interviewing those that are shaping the next wave of leaders. It’s a task that those who are called to this purpose thrive at, redefining how people lead, and changing the old model of leadership that is flawed. As a precursor to our first episode premiering in a few weeks, here is an early episode where I discuss how to apply a non-traditional leadership style with Sam Manon! On today's episode of Finding the Upside, I am talking with Sam Manon about why being a Rebel Leader and breaking away from traditional leadership is most effective. I have always upheld a "doing it different" approach to leadership because I found that it worked better. And this was not the norm and counter to "corporate think" so it proved tricky at times to operate that way. Sam and I have shared a close friendship spanning over 30 years, and co-led together in senior management at my last corporate position. In this episode, we discuss our unique approach to leadership during a time when traditional leadership styles were the norm. Join us as we dive into our personal experiences and recount the challenges we faced while applying a non-traditional leadership style to show how being a Rebel Leader is the new norm. Listen now! Here’s a quick look at today’s episode…

28 Feb 2023 | #26: How Using RESET and Transitions Can Optimize Your Energy and Performance | 00:16:29
Doing it differently is my motto! Morning routines are all the rage right now…everyone is talking about having one and how it will transform your day! Now let me say that I don’t completely disagree with the idea of a routine that sets you up for success and makes you feel your best. Routines provide structure and make you not have to think through every step of your day…if you do the same thing it takes less energy for your brain to have to remember what to do - it’s automatic and that has great value. But what I think is that a morning routine is truly personal and to say that if you’re not doing it the way that is being promoted that you're a failure is misdirected in my opinion. Are you really doomed if you are not doing things exactly the way it’s being done by others??? - NO!!! Those messages can make you feel as though there’s something wrong with you and that’s so far from the truth!! So on today’s episode, I am sharing my best tools for optimizing your day and explaining how using RESET and Transitions can allow you to optimize your energy and performance. Let’s dive in!
24 Oct 2023 | #60: Owning Your ADHD: Your 4-Part Framework with Annika Ahlstrom | 01:01:58
More and more, we are hearing about ADHD and Executive Function challenges in Adults and how much it impacts an individual's life. Many high profile individuals, like Mel Robbins and Jenna Kutcher have openly discussed their own adult diagnoses and the impact they face. In the past, the focus has been more on children, but many people discovered during the pandemic when structure fell away they were struggling, some were led to find out why and discovered that they had ADHD and/or issues with Executive Function. That’s because the impact from these challenges are everyday life skills and this difference can really create difficulties for people without the right understanding and strategies. So in today’s episode of Finding the Upside, I am continuing the conversation about all of that with my special guest, Annika Ahlstrom. Annika is an Executive Function Coach who has deep experience working with children and families with ADHD and/or Executive Functioning challenges. Now in her private practice, she has expanded her services to serve more adults and couples. In this episode, Annika talks about her 4-part framework for success in working with people with ADHD. Her framework entails developing self awareness of challenges and strategies to solve issues in time management, organization and planning. These are all common areas that people with ADHD or Executive Function challenges experience. We discuss the foundational elements that specifically adults with ADHD need to establish to effectively manage their time and plan for success. Join me and Annika, as we dive deep into her framework, breaking down the key areas and strategies that it addresses. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…

24 Jan 2023 | #21: Starting a Side Hustle or Business While Working Your 9 to 5 - My Best Time Hacks to Do IT! #1 | 00:10:34
So…. you want to start a side hustle or a business. I know many of you have been thinking about this for a while. And I know that there is a lot of talk in the media, on social media, just in society in general right now about starting a side hustle or starting a business with the uncertainty that has been predicted. There are many people that are promoting this as something that is a good decision, and I don't disagree. However, I think it's a personal choice of whether you actually want to have a business, or have a nine to five and have a side hustle. Now obviously I'm an entrepreneur, so I support that idea as I've started my own business . Either way, however, you slice it, even if you ARE going to start a business, doing it while you have a nine to five is one of the most efficient and effective ways that you can do that.

28 Mar 2023 | #30: Finding Better Focus: Why Less is More with Apps and Tech | 00:11:37
These days we have SO many choices with apps and tools to use for EVERYTHING! Think about this… How many times do you switch from one application to another? How many tabs do you have open in your browser? How many times do you pick up your phone and switch back and forth between your phone and your computer? How many applications do you go in and out of on your phone? I was reading something about context switching, and about task switching and the time that it takes away because of lack of focus. There is no question that we are more distracted than ever. And sometimes we fool ourselves into thinking well, that's just what we need to do in order to run our business in order to do our job in order to live our life. But we are at the point where there are so many options with technology apps, and tools that we can access on our computers on our desktops, on our laptops on our phone on our iPads, so consuming and stepping into so many of them, switching from one to another causes us to lose so much time, focus and brain energy. No wonder we're exhausted at the end of the day. Do you notice that? Want to find better focus - Hint, close all those apps and tabs! I’m discussing why less is more on the podcast today!
18 Oct 2022 | #9: Starting Before you’re Ready: Using this Concept to Take ACTION! | 00:09:51
Starting before you're ready…it's a concept and a phrase we hear a lot these days. It’s common for entrepreneurs and businesspeople to suffer from the obsession to make something perfect before we let it go —whether it be a business project or new initiative. Sound familiar? And that perfectionism is something that definitely holds us back. It holds us back from making progress and getting started. In this short episode, I’m talking about this journey, my own journey with unraveling that tendency and coming to terms with that fact of how that would paralyze me. That desire of wanting it to be perfectly done. There's a quote that says “Done is Better than Perfect.” We are unpacking that in today's episode.
29 Nov 2022 | #15: Mastering the Practice of Gratitude and Abundance | 00:17:18
At this time of year, we are reminded and most of us are more intentional to take time to count our blessings and be grateful. I think most of us all strive to do that every day -- I know I do, but it can be hard when we are busy dealing with the day-to-day reality of life. The values of gratitude and abundance are common themes that resonate with people globally and most have intentions to make it a habit. Well after 20 years of subscribing to these principles, I finally was truly able to practice it by just making that part of my daily routine. In this episode, I am talking about how I did that and challenging you to find a way to integrate it into your daily life and really practice it. Because without practice, we're not truly able to benefit from living the values of gratitude and abundance. And that PRACTICE is what keeps you centered in the place that allows you to focus on what you HAVE (the upside) rather than what you don’t have …and that allows more abundance in all areas of your life. 27 Feb 2024 | #76: The Last Straw: Why I Left Corporate and Started a Business | 00:29:45
There are so many people that have left the corporate game to start their own business - and I am one of them. I find that the story of how that happens widely varies and there are so many off ramps or entry points that lead to owning a business. At the same time, college grads are still being counseled on how to land that amazing corporate job and others who have worked in corporate for years feel like they can’t do anything else. In developing topics for the podcast, one of my team members listed a bunch of ideas and he started with some questions. He said “Wouldn't it be interesting to ask other people that, you know, that have started a business why they started a business and what was the last straw?” The thought was that people want to hear how to navigate their career journey successfully in the current climate. In today’s episode of Finding the Upside, I reflect on my 20-year corporate journey and share my own personal story behind starting a business and the pivotal moments that led me to make that decision. I share insights into why more and more individuals are drawn to entrepreneurship in today's climate of autonomy and flexibility. I am giving strategies and tips on how to craft a phased career plan that includes gaining corporate experience, building a side hustle while working a 9 to 5, and ultimately transitioning to entrepreneurship. Start listening now as I give it to you straight!

06 Feb 2024 | #73: Understanding The Impact of Navigating Multiple Cultures with Mizuho Kanazawa | 01:04:33
Our global society and US culture continues to expand with more and more cultures threaded together and weaved into our country. Although cities throughout the US have been called a “melting pot”, what we actually see are pockets of cultures that never really merge. Have you ever considered why? More than ever, there is a need for REAL cultural understanding and the creation of inclusive spaces for all to belong. In this episode, I welcome Mizuho Kanazawa (Miho), and we discuss the nuances and layers of this intricate topic. Miho is dedicated to working with clients whose personality and life experience were shaped by more than one culture. She shares her work focus, empowering individuals who juggle multiple cultures, the one they share with their parents and the one in which they are living and navigating. I learned that there are individuals that are “third culture.” These scenarios come with challenges for people, navigating to understand, be understood and merge their multicultural parts into a healthy identity. Miho works closely with her clients and seeks to empower the multicultural person to work through all chapters of their life; to build confidence and be connected in all their important relationships and valued in their community. Miho discusses the challenges her clients face, from navigating multiple cultures in their families, to being accepted in their home society, to dealing with issues in corporate spaces. Tune in to this thought-provoking conversation on cultural identity, the importance of creating safe spaces, and the power of TRUE diversity within corporations where everyone belongs. Listen now! 06 Dec 2022 | #16: What makes a GREAT Leader? | 00:16:52
Many of you may admire someone that you’ve encountered and you believe is a great leader. I know that I have a few. But what is it that makes that person a GREAT leader? What are the traits that they possess that makes them great? This is an important discussion that should resonate for any leader – whether you are leading your own teams as a business owner, or a corporate leader, or in any type of leadership role, or a member of a team, this topic applies. One of the most challenging things for leaders is to reflect on and hold the mirror up to themselves in terms of how they are operating, what actions are they taking, what are they bringing to their leadership effort, and how their behaviors work with their teams. In this episode, I am talking about how to identify the traits needed and fine tune the action to align with those characteristics of leadership that you value.
11 Apr 2023 | #32: Thinking about your Thinking: Why You Need To Do This | 00:17:55
Thinking about your thinking…It’s a practice of thinking about your thoughts often referred to as metacognition - it involves being self-aware…but it is also the foundation of critical thinking. With the fast-changing world we live in, it is crucial to consider how our beliefs and positions have developed and to be open to new evidence, facts and information. But with the availability of information in today’s world that makes this even more challenging. Misinformation, false information can be presented to us without even realizing it and it makes our news literacy and critical thinking skills the only thing that can save us. Tune in to today’s episode, to gain insight into this important skill as I discuss the importance of critical thinking and self-awareness. We dive deep into how seeking out multiple sources and perspectives can help to ensure our beliefs and positions are evolving with our changing world.
08 Nov 2022 | #12: Listening Loud and Clear: Understanding How Listening Leads to Better Connections | 00:20:14
To listen is to give attention to a sound, action, or communication. Listening is important in leadership, important in business, and so important in our personal relationships. Do you hear and do you understand what's being spoken to you? Are you comprehending the full message that is being told? We could talk all day about what happens when listening fails… Because there's miscommunications, misunderstandings, there's high emotions or all kinds of negative things that happen just by our inability to truly listen.
In this episode, we are talking about listening skills. For many of you, listening isn't something that you've been taught how to do. And many times the way we're doing it isn't the most effective. That's the bad news. But the good news is, behaviors can be unlearned and improved.

Throughout my life and career, mastering and fine tuning the art of communication was and still is always a focus. As I navigated many situations, I needed to get a better understanding with the words I was choosing, how I was saying things and how I was being perceived. Was I connecting with someone in a way that aided the communication or hindered it? There’s so many things that come into play when this topic is brought up. In this episode, I’m talking about Communication - an area where we as humans need to always be striving to develop better skills to communicate in a way that allows us to connect, be understood and help understand others.
05 Mar 2024 | #77: Making Time for Creativity: Why Traditional Corporate/Business Structure Doesn’t Support This | 00:21:38
I don’t think anyone would disagree that in our work, pushing back from the desk and taking time to think, reflect and process would be a welcomed practice…but do we actually do it? If not, WHY? In our crazy, insane society and culture today we don't do this and there isn’t a place for it in traditional corporate business structure. The truth is creativity is limited and not encouraged enough because leaders are actually modeling a structure that doesn’t support it. In today’s episode, I am talking about the necessity of making time for creativity. I share insights into creating a workplace environment that encourages reflection and ideation, fostering a culture where the best ideas can thrive. I give my best actionable strategies for implementing this practice into your company that balances this need and maintaining productivity.. 13 Sep 2022 | #4: 3 Ways to Manage Your Mindset | 00:24:37
Having a mindset that allows us to find the opportunity in any challenge is important in every aspect of our life. Today on the podcast, we're going to focus on how we find that and keep ourselves in that space to be able to find opportunity no matter what is happening around us. The bottom line is that it definitely is something that starts with your approach and your mindset. Even though we know that, we may sometimes forget how important it is to maintain that mindset… really check in to see how we're approaching things, and where our head is at. If we're not checking in with how we're thinking, whether we're thinking about things from an optimistic viewpoint, or we've slipped into negativity, it really can impact everything. Not only how we approach things but also what we attract. Are we attracting positive things? Are we attracting negative things? It can sometimes be a struggle to keep yourself in that space. In this episode, Maria is talking about exactly that and will share 3 Ways to Manage Your Mindset.
12 Jan 2023 | #20: Changing the Way You Work with Innovation and Tech - Pt 1 | 00:17:41
As we're in the beginning of a new year, one of the things that always comes up is the planning stage and getting all your diaries, your calendars, your planners... all of the tools that you use for your time management and planning...getting those together. In today’s episode I am talking about how you do that and how that's evolved... and how you can continue to change and embrace the new ways to do things with innovation and technology.
11 Oct 2022 | #8: Changing a Hustle Mindset and Embracing a Better Way to Work | 00:21:46
Success is measured in different ways in different cultures. In our American culture, success is measured so much by what we have, in terms of materiality, what we do, rather than who we are, and our life experience in totality. But there is more to success than just these elements. As an entrepreneur that has built a business, I want to elevate the concept that you can change how you work and still be successful but abandon some of the programming that keeps us in that non-stop grind. Embracing the fact that we could still be very productive and successful while working less at a high speed CHURN. In this episode, I’m talking about flipping the script on the idea of “hustle mentality” and supporting a better way to work.

In terms of where the issues lie, there’s more than meets the eye. In this episode, I am addressing the current labor situation and I'm giving it to you straight. A lot of what's happening now is that we have reached the tipping point with what we've experienced in the last year or so. 02 Nov 2022 | #11: TRUE LEADERSHIP: The Value of Differences in Your Team | 00:09:27
The beauty and value lies in the reality that we are all different…we all have different strengths and weaknesses…we come from different places and we’ve had different experiences…we all have different skills and natural abilities. These days that is often overlooked as many attempt to devalue anything or anyone that is different, purporting that we should all be the same and anyone that is outside of their model is less or inferior. Nothing could be further from the truth and more damaging to us as a society than to believe and strive for everyone to be the same…this is true for your teams as well. Think about it – a baseball team can’t win with a roster full of pitchers – a football team can’t win with a roster full of just QB’s. The differences – the varied strengths and skills married together perfectly creates a perfect symphony – just like all the different instruments in an orchestra create beautiful music. This can and does make for the best team and it’s up to the leader to orchestrate that masterpiece. Today I am talking about how to embrace differences in your team and optimize the varied strengths for the best success.

20 Feb 2024 | #75: Forget Balance: How to Achieve Work-Life Integration | 00:18:58
Work Life Balance is a term that has been historically used referring to a healthy balance between personal and professional life. While many have strived to achieve this, and corporate leaders have attempted to make changes to their structure to support that concept, it remained elusive. Today it is often termed the double win, where you can succeed at work and in life. It marks a tipping point where many have realized that balance is not what we should be seeking, but instead integration of the two. In today’s shorty episode of "Finding the Upside," I am diving into the concept of work life integration. Departing from the traditional notion of work-life balance, I explore how integrating work and personal life can lead to greater satisfaction, lower stress levels, and overall well-being whether you are an entrepreneur or work in a company. I highlight how this approach yields benefits for both groups. Highlighting studies and research findings, I talk about ways to use this approach with examples of how others have achieved positive results and why companies who migrate to support this will see improvements as well. Tune in now to get the insights I’m sharing to help you achieve a more fulfilling and sustainable approach to work and life. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…

12 Mar 2024 | #78: CREATING LEADERS: The Problem with Leadership Today | 00:19:01
As a precursor to our first episode premiering in a few weeks, here is an early episode where I discuss that flawed model and reveal the reasons why many “leaders” are failing and ways to change that.. Have you ever thought about how leaders get into leadership? Most are promoted into a managerial role or leadership role because they were good at their job, not because they had the skills or experience. Isn't that crazy how any other field requires some experience or qualification at the entry point? The most important skills for the job are overlooked and sadly, many times not even a focus to be developed. The result? Negative outcomes that impact businesses everyday. In this episode, Maria discusses the cause and impact of this problem in leadership and how to escape it. Leaders that recognize their need to gain the skills and experience are the ones that have the best outcomes, for themselves, the business and their people. 09 Jan 2024 | #69: Showing up Consistently is Where the Magic Happens | 00:11:59
Whether it’s changing your behavior or hitting a goal what matters most is CONSISTENCY! In today’s shorty episode of Finding the Upside, I dive into the secret sauce I have tested and found works for either. While I have practiced and taught the method of chunking down a bigger task or goal throughout my professional work, this small experiment in my personal life helped me prove it works for anything. Many of us struggle with the all or nothing mindset and that is not foreign to me. I realized that this small insight I heard differently at a Mel Robbins event was the key - that success isn't about perfection but about consistency. BOOM - well of course it is! We complicate it all the time, am I right? The power of embracing manageable, bite-sized steps towards goals and how showing up daily, even imperfectly, can be a game-changer. I was challenged to apply this principle in all things in my life, proving that small, consistent actions lead to significant progress. I invite you to listen in so that you can get this small shift that will change so much for you - let’s dive in! Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…

In today’s episode of Finding the Upside, I am talking about a huge topic in our society today, with my very special guest, Pasha Marlowe. Pasha is a marriage and family therapist, who is now working as a neurodiversity coach. After her own healing journey where she made her own discoveries, she started to reframe some of the social models and diagnostic labels that define us. Pasha fell in love with coaching others to understand and accept that just as in gender and sexuality, we have neurological differences that also put us on a spectrum. We discuss neurodiversity and how as a society, we need to understand and celebrate differences rather than label them as less than. Tune in to today’s episode to join in on the conversation of this important topic.

19 Dec 2023 | #68: Getting Onstage at Work: Why You Need to Use this Metaphor | 00:17:47
Have you ever thought about the role you play at work, and how you prepare for that? Most people don’t think about it like that, but the reality is that we are all expected to conduct ourselves in a certain way (aka play a role) whether we have a job or own a company. There are things we do at work that we don’t at home, behave within professional guidelines that differ from our more relaxed actions with friends or family. The lack of defining what your off stage/on stage process is leads to us not fulfilling that role - especially when we don’t feel like it. In today's episode, I dive into Disney’s intriguing "Behind the Yellow Line '' experience. In their signature behind-the-scenes tour, they take guests backstage and pull back the curtain on their operation and experience, illustrating their “Behind the Yellow Line” concept. I explore the symbolic yellow line that separates the backstage from on-stage at Disney and how they use this concept to set the expectations for all their cast members. I am talking about the significance and responsibility of fully embracing and embodying one's role, emphasizing its importance in delivering on a mission or vision. Drawing parallels to acting and method acting, this episode explores how to balance authenticity and expectation when it comes to playing a specific role to achieve expected outcomes. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…

10 Sep 2024 | #101: How AI Will Elevate SPORTS for Entertainment | 00:14:38
After celebrating our 100th episode milestone, we're kicking off season four by exploring a topic that’s both timely and intriguing. Everyone is trying to figure out what/how AI will impact and change work, life and our world. There are many unknowns for sure, but there are some indications of what might happen in all the different realms. In this episode, I am diving into the intriguing intersection of AI and the future of entertainment. As AI continues to reshape industries, what does this mean for the world of entertainment? Inspired by a thought-provoking clip from Alex Ohanian, the discussion explores how AI is transforming content consumption, but presents why live sports will rise in its draw even more because of the unique displays of the human experience. I’m reflecting on how this could be true reflections on the latest Olympics, the unique allure of unscripted human moments, and why the unpredictability of live sports will become even more appealing and desire in an AI-driven world. Get ready to hear this conversation and share your thoughts on this topic as we kick off Season 4 right now! Show Notes : Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…

23 Jan 2024 | #71: Why do People Resist Change? | 00:13:02
Why do people resist change? In today’s episode of Finding the Upside, I am talking about the common issue of human resistance to change. More specifically, I am exploring how that relates to the resistance that many people have with embracing VIRTUAL as an opportunity - why is that? Is it the technology that scares so many people, or is it the unknown, or is it that the meaning applied to it is negative? Maybe it is a little of all of these elements. I am diving into the reluctance to embrace virtual events post-pandemic and the discussion challenges this mindset by highlighting success stories even of highly successful people that transition to virtual events. I discuss the psychology of change and the need to confront discomfort that may be caused by it. I am sharing my own experience moving people to embrace change and the evolution of technology and its impact encouraging you to see change as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. If you want to get some insights on navigating the ever-evolving landscape and discover the power of embracing change for personal and professional growth, then this episode is for you! Let’s get started! Show Notes: Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…

06 Sep 2022 | #3: The Cost of NOT Doing Something | 00:22:17
Making decisions in business always involves considering the cost of resources, whether that’s dollars or time. But far too often, when we are only thinking about the cost of doing something, it stops leaders from moving forward because they haven’t thought through the cost of NOT doing it. That always leads to short-sighted decisions that can be costly, and cause us to miss an opportunity and lead to really negative outcomes. And things move so quickly today, that we have to be looking at the emerging trends that move into the norm and change business and life -- otherwise we might get left behind. In this episode, Maria discusses how changing our mindset affects our ability to recognize trends and embrace a new and different idea that pushes us with innovation and to do things differently. Entrepreneurs who look at the disruption, pay attention to the fringe and emerging trends, look at changing conditions with the opportunity to do something new and embrace change to find a way to thrive, are the ones that end up finding the upside.

26 Oct 2022 | #10: TRUE LEADERSHIP: What are Demand Relationships and Why They Don’t Work | 00:19:48
What are demand relationships and what is the connection this has to leading teams in business? I hadn’t heard of demand relationships before until I heard a speaker explain this concept in personal relationships. In a demand relationship, a dynamic exists where power is being exerted over another person where they react to the power over them and it results in negative outcomes opposite to what is desired. Ironically, the same concept and outcome is relevant to leading a team in an organization and it’s counter to TRUE LEADERSHIP. This is the third mini-episode of the 5-part series I have been doing called TRUE LEADERSHIP. In this episode, I’m explaining what demand relationships are and why they don’t work. Want to know how to take the right approach that will create the best outcome for an engaged, productive and happy team…listen to this episode to find out!
