Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “I think the problem is that a lot of people don’t see the grunt work and the long process to get to what it is they see as success. They just see someone’s success and haven’t been following along the whole time.” - Jeremy Levy As a singer and lifelong lover of music, I am so excited to bring you today’s Finding Brave episode. I have a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s really like to make a living in the creative arts, while bringing the world our special talents and being of service to others. Our special guest today is thriving in the world of music composing/orchestration, and he reveals the tenacity and drive that it took to get to where he is today. Grammy-nominated composer and orchestrator Jeremy Levy has worked in nearly every medium in Los Angeles for over 10 years. He recently received his first Grammy nomination for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella for his track, Uranus: The Magician off his album The Planets: Reimagined, a modern big band jazz reinterpretation of the famous classical suite by Gustav Holst. He’s also a well-known orchestrator for some of Hollywood’s biggest films and TV series, including The Queen’s Gambit, Frozen 2 and Ant-Man. Jeremy’s inspiration for The Planets: Reimagined came from Afro-Cuban rhythms, classic swing, the Buddy Rich Big Band, progressive rock fusion, acoustic guitar-driven jazz - all mixed with his love of symphony orchestra and his experience touring with Rockabilly legend, Brian Setzer. If you have a passion of any kind, you are sure to glean some valuable strategies and tips for bringing that passion forward in a lucrative way, from the personal story that Jeremy shares today. 12 Apr 2018 | 15: How To Achieve Phenomenal Success and Impact The World Before Age 30, with Jared Kleinert | 00:46:05
“You know these are people that are writing New York Times bestselling books [and] they’re building successful businesses. They’re producing feature films, and you would think that most people need an entire career to accomplish this, or need an entire lifetime to accomplish this. That was certainly true for past generations, but now we live in a world where this can happen in a matter of years, or even months for the craziest of the examples I’ve studied.” - Jared Kleinert The story of today’s guest on Finding Brave is an inspiring one, and it just may shift your perception as it shows that age is not a necessary requirement for brilliance and impact. Jared Kleinert, age 22, is an entrepreneur, TED and keynote speaker, and award-winning author who’s been named USA Today's "Most Connected Millennial" after spending years identifying and connecting hundreds of the world's smartest and most talented Millennials. His first book 2 Billion Under 20 was voted the "#1 Entrepreneurship Book of 2015" by the Axiom Business Book Awards and his latest book 3 Billion Under 30 was released in January 2017 profiling 75 Avengers-esque individuals who have collectively started companies worth billions of dollars and reach hundreds of millions of people each month through their work. In addition to his research and keynote speaking business, Jared (along with his team) partners with #1 NYT bestselling authors, Fortune 500 executives, major keynote speakers, Emmy award-winning journalists, seven-figure business owners, VC-backed startup founders, various multinational corporations, and other influential organizations who lead their industries and positively impact the world with their thought leadership in order to help them reach more of their ideal customers and best engage their increasingly Millennial-dominated workforces. He also hosts Meeting of the Minds (motm.co), an invite-only network for 7-figure business owners and subject matter experts who want to become super-connectors and grow their businesses exponentially. The United Nations has touted him as a "Champion For Humanity.” Today, you’ll hear how Jared, at the young age of 22, has gotten to where he is by making his own opportunities and finding the right mentors along the way. He even graciously offers his phone number and encourages success seekers to contact him directly. The wisdom and advice that Jared has to offer in this interview is invaluable to listeners of any age who are looking to advance in their careers or entrepreneurial journeys. 05 Jul 2018 | 27: Leading With Emotional Courage, with Peter Bregman | 00:39:30
“What I’m going to encourage listeners to do, and what I talk about in Leading with Emotional Courage, is to trust the emotions in a certain way and in a way that you don’t have to figure everything out with your head. Figuring it out with your head keeps the ego in control, and actually stops the emotion from moving on.” - Peter Bregman Being brave is about acting powerfully in the world, and emotional courage, or being brave on the inside, is what we’re talking about today. Our guest today shows us that if you are brave with what you are willing to feel, then you can be brave in what you are able to do. Peter Bregman is the CEO of Bregman Partners, a company that helps senior leaders create accountability and inspire collective action on their organization’s most important work. He is the bestselling author of 18 Minutes, and his forthcoming book, Leading with Emotional Courage, is being released this month. You’ll hear stories from Peter’s own personal journey about what emotional courage looks and feels like, and learn the value of being able to feel our feelings without fully understanding, analyzing or criticizing them. This is key because, as you’ll hear, if you’re willing to feel everything, you can do anything. To learn more about today's guest, visit: http://bregmanpartners.com/

30 Dec 2021 | 208: Holiday Pick: Six Essential Questions for the New Year | 00:35:38
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “You just have to believe that there’s a higher version of you that you can tap into and that can access higher-level wisdom, insight, solutions, strategies, people, and connections. If you believe it, and if you believe it strongly, it’s amazing what happens in your life.” - Kathy Caprino As we approach the end of another year, once again I’ll be sharing my “Holiday Picks” selections, featuring some of the top Finding Brave episodes that have previously aired, to help you enter 2022 with even more bravery and motivation to pursue your goals. Today, I’m excited to bring you an episode from late 2018, where I shared a helpful year-end strategy of reflection -- the process of reflecting back on the past year in an in-depth, careful and probing way, exploring all that you’ve learned and experienced, created, and also “failed” at -- as an effective step to get clearer clear on what you really want in your life. This reflection process helps you connect in a powerful, juicy way with your ultimate dreams and desires, and it highlights where you’ve been living “off course” - far away from what your most authentic self really wants. In this episode, I explore what I've found to be six essential reflection questions that are perfect for this time of year, to help us take stock, expand our gratitude and appreciation for all that we are today, and set the wheels in motion for shifting our approach to how we operate, communicate, and engage with others and with our core challenges and power gaps. This reflection process hatches important new revelations, and sets the stage for a brand new future. As always, be gentle and compassionate with yourself as you reflect, and remember that everything that’s happened can be used to bolster and uplift you, if you let it. At the end of the show, I sing a little song to welcome in the New Year, from my heart to yours. I’d love to hear how your answers to these six questions impact you. And I welcome your suggestions for any future topics or interviewees that you’re interested in. Please reach out to me by email, or on social media via LinkedIn, or on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and say hello and share your ideas! I wish you and your family very Happy Holidays and I’m looking forward to serving you fresh, new episodes of Finding Brave in 2022 that will move you forward to create life and work as you dream it to be. Happy New Year!
18 Jun 2020 | 128: Power Gap #5: Acquiescing Instead of Saying "Stop" To Mistreatment Part of Kathy’s “The Most Powerful You” Series | 00:36:14
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers! “ I understand that in some cases people truly have no options, for a variety of solid reasons, but for so many other people there are options. There are different avenues available, but we have to feel strong enough to find the right kind of help.” - Kathy Caprino I’ve seen firsthand--and research and data confirm it--that there is widespread gender bias, sexual harassment, and other forms of unfair and illegal behaviors at work. From Chapter 5 of my new book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss, I share what has happened to me personally around mistreatment and sexual harassment as well as experiences from other women I’ve worked and spoken with, as the dynamics of these particular situations resemble in critical ways what millions of women around the world are experiencing. Even though I started writing this book several years ago, all of these power gaps, including and especially this gap of Acquiescing Instead of Saying "STOP!" to Mistreatment, is even more relevant right now. I hope that anyone listening who has been on the receiving end of mistreatment will get something helpful from this episode. I believe with all my heart and soul -- and have dedicated the past 10 years of my life to teaching and supporting this principle -- that each and every one of us can take important bravery-boosting actions today that will generate new options for us, and help us muster the bravery and the power to stand up, speak truth to power, and do the important work we must to end abuse and mistreatment in the workplace.

12 Dec 2019 | 101: Helping Our Girls Raise Their Hands Not Lower Their Standards, with Illana Raia | 00:39:48
“I think that if they are expressing an interest in something, even if it’s not the thing that you did as a child or that all of their friends are doing, or it’s something you know nothing about, let’s explore the resources because they are out there.” - Illana Raia When developing the future female leaders of tomorrow, it’s so important for them to be aware of the females leaders that are impacting the world right now. Today’s Finding Brave guest was inspired by her own daughter to put female role models in front of girls at an early age, and as she shares, we all have a part to play in this critical movement. A former Skadden lawyer and guest lecturer at Columbia University, Illana Raia has been busy since 2016 founding Être - a resource and mentorship platform for girls approaching high school. She thinks of Être as knowledge strategy for girls - highlighting valuable tools and role models they will need to change the world - and contributes regularly to HuffPost, Medium and Thrive Global on these issues. Named a Mogul Influencer in 2017, Illana has appeared in the HuffPost "Talk To Me" video series, participated in the 2018 Balance Project Interviews and the 2019 #WomenWhoRock campaign, and has been featured on podcasts like The Other 50%, UBS’ Signature Series and Women To Watch Media. Her journey from lawyer to founder was profiled in Forbes and Worth, and her first book - Être: Girls, Who Do You Want To Be? - launched October 11, 2019 on Day of the Girl. We won’t change the times until we talk about these issues openly, honestly, and with the younger generation. In this episode, Illana reveals why reaching out to girls in middle school is not too early, and as adults we can play a pivotal role in springboarding the change we need right now, because mentors matter and bravery starts early. 21 Apr 2022 | 224: Why People Feel They Don’t Belong In Their Workplaces and How to Fix That, with Rumeet Billan | 00:48:30
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Oftentimes, we hear people saying that they’re inviting everyone and everyone can input their own opinion. That’s great, that’s a start, but that doesn’t actually necessarily mean belonging. When you invite them, what happens when they get there? What’s their experience? That’s belonging.” - Rumeet Billan New research shows that almost half of employed Americans are thinking about leaving their current jobs. Those who are considering making a switch are less likely to feel a sense of belonging in their current workplace, which is most often associated with being treated fairly and respectfully. Today’s Finding Brave expert guest has conducted extensive research to show that belonging is good for business, and how there are multiple opportunities for leaders and employees at all levels to drive a sense of belonging for all members of the organization. Dr. Rumeet Billan is an award-winning, internationally recognized entrepreneur, researcher, speaker, and expert on psychological capital. Her mission is to transform workplace cultures through research, training, and experiences that enable trust, foster belonging, and build resilience. The work that Rumeet is doing is so important, because greater awareness always equals greater choice. If you’re not aware of the things she reveals today, you can’t possibly change them. Belonging first starts with self-awareness, and both Rumeet and I hope that you feel inspired by this episode to expand your own understanding of what belonging really is and how to build a culture that supports it. You need to have that validated, and there are ways to test that so it feels comfortable for you.” - Matthew Pollard Introverts often feel that certain barriers exist making sales harder to do than their extroverted counterparts. 14 Nov 2019 | 97: The Top Six Relational Handicaps That Break Relationships and Bonds, with Yamel Corcoll-Iglesias | 00:50:51
“Don’t just assume that you know yourself. Ask yourself the questions. Your body is talking to you all the time, and what is this reaction in your body saying? Even if you have to get really detailed about feelings, just give it words.” - Yamel Corcoll-Iglesias Years ago after leaving corporate America and becoming a therapist and then a career coach and writer, I began to recognize more deeply than ever that we all live in a relational world that demands effective relational skills. But so often, we are entirely ill-equipped (and untrained) as to how to meet that requirement and we enter into our personal and professional relationships with significant “relational handicaps.” The result is often troubled marriages, ineffective parenting, poor leadership and a cascade of physical and emotional ailments. Today’s Finding Brave guest is here to share her expertise on what she has seen are the top six relational handicaps that damage relationships and bonds. Yamel Corcoll-Iglesias is a bilingual licensed marriage and family therapist, addiction specialist, and certified couples’ therapist. She traveled over 5,000 miles from Uruguay, her country of birth, some 35 years ago to follow a dream and a mission to become a therapist. Her first marriage ended quickly and inspired her to understand more deeply the allure of “partnering up” as well as how to recognize the blind spots that lead us into challenging or unsuccessful relationships. Moving forward through 24 years of marriage and witnessing her now grown children navigating this world, she has found that her interest in exploring how we can live in fuller relational health and integrity has deepened. Her work and purpose are focused on teaching and training couples, individuals, business leaders and families the necessary skills to live in relational integrity, and to identify the positive legacies they wish to leave behind and new ways to repair damage caused by missteps taken when we are not at our best. Today, Yamel offers insight on how identifying and then transforming our relational handicaps into respectful, insightful, and accountable actions will set us up to forge healthy and satisfying relationships. That in turn helps us build mutually-fulfilling intimate relationships--the core of our profound existence. To learn more about today's guest, visit: https://www.yamelcouplestherapist.com/

23 Jul 2020 | 133: Free Audio: Chapter 6 of The Most Powerful You: Losing Sight of Your Thrilling Dream | 00:52:15
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers! “For those who’ve sold their soul for money, their professional lives can be extremely painful, crushing and in fact, unsustainable because they’ve unconsciously chosen to walk away from the exciting dreams for their lives that would bring fulfillment, internal reward and a sense of purpose.” - Kathy Caprino On this episode of Finding Brave I share the audio version of Chapter 6 of my new book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss, which launches this month. This chapter is very close to my heart, as it explores the damaging power gap of losing sight of your thrilling dream for your life, which I’ve lived through, and it can be a crushing experience. This is something that has not only impacted me, but countless others in the pursuit of “success” and “safety” in their careers and professional lives. Things will happen to each of us that derail our dreams, and often you’ll take a direction that you think is right for you, but it ends up being the wrong path. It’s a universal experience -- that what we once believed was possible and desirable can change, and we have to change as a result. If you don’t want to wake up unhappy years from now, you have to accept this fact and realize that you alone are responsible for how you you respond to the life that’s before you, and to the challenges and hardships that you’ve faced. You alone have the power to shape your future, and now is the time to choose your own way in pursuit of the life you want to live and the mark you want to make in the world.

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers! “If you clear your head with a stress management technique, maybe you’ll be able to hear a solution to a problem that you wouldn’t have been able to hear before, because you’ve got so much going on in your head and you’re running from one thing to the other.” - Jordan Friedman In last week’s episode and Part 1 of this 2-part series, we explored ways to manage stress during our current pandemic and beyond, but the conversation I had with our expert guest only scratched the surface on this critical topic. That’s why I’m so excited to be bringing him back today for a special Part 2, so that we can learn more as we dive deeper into his essential wisdom on stress management. Every day, Jordan Friedman helps thousands of stressed and anxious people worldwide work, sleep and feel better. 15 Jul 2021 | 184: Part 2: How to Let Go of Your Business The Right Way When It's Time to Sell, with Denise Logan | 00:31:18
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Whether we are retiring, selling a business, or we can no longer work because of an illness or caring for a family member, we will all leave our work. So how are we preparing for this transition, just like we prepare our children to transition into their careers?” - Denise Logan In last week’s episode I welcomed an expert guest to talk about the issues often faced by business owners looking to sell their businesses, and what struggles they often face as they prepare for this life-changing transition. The conversation was such a riveting one (and I was learning so much!), that we decided to make it a special two-part episode, with the conclusion airing today. Denise Logan knows that to business owners, selling a business is more than a transaction. To them, it is often an emotionally fraught period of transition, filled with unexpected highs and lows, with no clear vision of what waits at the end for them and their family. Her passion for this work is colored by her own experience of being an unprepared business owner who made an abrupt and choppy exit from her company, after ignoring the signs that it was time for several years. She is the author of The Seller’s Journey: A Business Fable about Navigating the Emotional Obstacles to Selling Your Business, and has addressed more than five hundred audiences on three continents about the psychology of business owners and how to make it easier when the time comes to let go. As a business owner myself, I can relate deeply to everything Denise shares, including issues around our own self-identity and how we focused our time and energy, and what happens to our sense of purpose, meaning and identity as human beings as we consider letting go of the work we’ve done for years that has brought us great fulfillment and joy. Whatever situation you find yourself in, whether as a business owner or employee looking to make a transition to a new role, you are sure to get value from the wisdom Denise shares today, and in last week’s episode. Ready to Take Your Professional Life and Leadership to the Next Level? Become The Most Powerful You! In reading a great deal about leadership today, and interviewing top leadership experts, I’m recognizing a disappointing trend - that the general concept and understanding of leadership has often become so vague and watered down that most of it isn’t helpful at all, and it’s not suited to a majority of women who want to lead differently. It helps you recognize and understand more about yourself as a person and the leader you want to be, then take empowering, transformative actions to operate in your role in a way that takes your leadership and your career higher, making the impact you dream to. If you truly want to help your team, staff, and organization become “The Most Powerful We,” this is the right training for you. Take this course individually or bring it to your workforce and teams today and experience what’s possible for you. Click here for more information.

17 Sep 2020 | 141: So, You'd Like To Record Your Own Audiobook? Here's What To Know, with Gabe Wicks | 00:38:01
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers! “It’s hard, but make yourself step back, take a breath and do this as if you were having a conversation with a friend. The minute that someone starts thinking that they’re performing to an audience and not sitting across the table from a friend, they start making mistakes.” - Gabe Wicks Whether you’re already a published author, or you’re thinking of writing your first book, you are probably aware of the growing popularity of audiobooks. Maybe you’ve already decided to record your own audiobook, but you’re not sure where to begin with the process. Today’s Finding Brave guest reveals how audiobooks are rewarding to publish but hard work for both the narrator and studio, and there are numerous pitfalls and nuances that I wish I knew about before I recorded the audiobook for my new book The Most Powerful You (which I’m thrilled to share is in the Top 100 Bestsellers on Amazon’s Women In Business audiobooks!). It’s about so much more than just showing up and getting behind the microphone. Gabe Wicks is a Nashville-based producer for over twenty years, most of that within the book industry. He is the VP of Creative Services for HarperCollins Christian Publishing, which currently produces over 500 audiobooks annually. Gabe produced my audiobook and was a joy to work with! In this episode, Gabe reveals why an author should or should not read his or her own audiobook, the elements that make up a compelling audiobook, where he sees the audiobook world going in the near future, and perhaps most importantly, why you need to not be so hard on yourself during this experience. 10 Mar 2022 | 218: Find Your Direction and Fall In Love With What You Do, with Stu Massengill | 00:47:10
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “We have to be really honest with ourselves, which I think is sometimes the hardest part. We have to really ask ourselves if we are happy in what we’re doing. Are we actually enjoying this, or do we really not like what we’re doing? Deep honesty [with ourselves] is where beautiful things come from.” - Stu Massengill If you’re feeling lost and wanting to find direction, our inspiring Finding Brave guest shares so much wisdom in this episode, and at such a relatively young age! We cover some of the same issues and topics in the work that we both do, but in a different way with unique perspectives and “lenses,” and I can’t wait for you to meet him and learn from him today. Stu Massengill is on a mission to change the statistic from 80% of people not loving what they do to 80% of people falling in love with what they do! He is a Peak Performance Strategist for Tony Robbins and the founder of Finding Direction. Through his company, he helps people go from lost in life to creating a life full of passion and fulfillment. As a high-achiever under 30, Stu has accomplished many things from building an 8-figure business at 20 years old to beating cancer at 24. Stu brings his deep passion and beautiful heart to creating lasting impact across the globe. I’ve seen from working with thousands of people around the world that when we approach life in enlivening, self-affirming ways and become more of who we really are, we are much better equipped to successfully thrive through the tough times, as Stu has. It was so refreshing to hear his overarching message that we should never settle for anything less than a life we love, and not wait a single second longer to pursue what it is that you really want to do in this life. 20 Sep 2018 | 38: Embracing Your Age and Wisdom - The Making of a Modern Elder, with Chip Conley | 00:39:04
“When you create an environment where you have a mixture of ages, just like a mixture of genders and a mixture of races, you create a better workplace and more effective teams.” - Chip Conley In our increasingly accelerated world that venerates the young, many in mid-career sense that the ground is shifting beneath their feet, leaving them feeling invisible, undervalued, and threatened by the digital natives nipping at their heels. However, today’s guest on Finding Brave argues that experience is on the brink of a comeback. Rebel hospitality entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling author, Chip Conley disrupted his favorite industry... twice. At age 26, he founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality (JdV), transforming an inner-city motel into the second largest boutique hotel brand in America. He sold JdV after running it as CEO for 24 years, and soon the young founders of Airbnb asked him to help transform their promising start-up into the world’s leading hospitality brand. Chip served as Airbnb’s Head of Global Hospitality and Strategy for four years and today acts as the company’s Strategic Advisor for Hospitality and Leadership. His five books have made him a leading authority at the intersection of psychology and business. Chip was awarded “Most Innovative CEO” by the San Francisco Business Times, is the recipient of hospitality’s highest honor, the Pioneer Award, and holds a BA and MBA from Stanford University. In this episode, he tackles the hard truth that ageism is as big an issue in the working world as any other bias. In the process, Conley liberates the term “elder” from the stigma of “elderly” and ignites a conversation for society to embrace age like any other diversity while also celebrating the value of wisdom and experience. A great leader is able to resiliently and bravely handle core challenges and address key obstacles, all while building a work culture of belonging, safety and trust. And having leaders who demonstrate true empathy has become far more important to employees in today’s post-covid world. To explore what empathy in the workplace is today and how leaders must demonstrate it more fully and authentically, is our inspiring guest Raj Sharma from Ernst & Young. Raj is the Vice Chair at Ernst & Young (EY) Consulting. His 25 years of experience in commercial and financial services has helped him become a global business executive and transformative technology leader, building businesses and executing strategic growth initiatives worldwide. He now leads over 25,000 consultants across the Americas service line. In our conversation, we explore the importance of empathy in leadership by examining EY’s recent study on empathy in business. We learn about the most compelling results from the study and what motivated EY to do this research in the first place, how their findings can help other leaders, and what our guest thinks about empathy overall. Discussing the research findings that over 50% of employees don’t see real empathy at work, Raj explains how empathy can lead to innovation and accountability and how you can improve actionable empathy in your own workplace. We discuss his 5 steps for becoming a great leader and what Raj finds most challenging about managing such a large workforce. 27 Jan 2022 | 212: (Part 1) How Confidence Is the Key, and How You Can Get It, Build It, and Keep It, with Dr. Nate Zinsser | 00:23:10
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Whether you’re on an athletic team, a sales force, or a symphony orchestra, you better be honest about what you think about yourself. What you think about yourself and what you think about all the things that happen day by day, that’s what constitutes your confidence.” - Dr. Nate Zinsser Confidence is a character trait that has relatively little to do with what happens to you, but rather it’s a function of how you think. Today’s Finding Brave guest reveals how you can change your level of confidence, but first you must be aware of certain things. You absolutely can develop confidence for any situation that you care to, and our guest shares the ways that confident performers think differently from the average person in order to do this. Dr. Nate Zinsser is an expert in the psychology of human performance who consults for individuals and organizations seeking a competitive edge. Nate’s latest book, The Confident Mind: A Battle-Tested Guide for Unshakable Performance, hit shelves January 2022, and has been endorsed by two-time Super Bowl Champion and MVP Eli Manning, bestselling authors Jon Krakauer and Steven Pressfield, and US Olympic Bobsled Head Coach Mike Kohn. I’m beyond excited to bring you the first installment of this special two-part mini-series with Nate on the subject of confidence, and I’ve loved learning from a master on this topic as it’s something that I teach about often in my courses and in my career and leadership coaching. This is an excellent opportunity to learn, grow, and stretch our understanding of confidence, and I’ll see you back here next week for the conclusion of this riveting conversation!

09 Jan 2025 | 299: 5 Ways Your Lack of Confidence Is Hurting You, with Kathy Caprino | 00:40:30
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “You have a lot of knowledge and expertise, but if you continually doubt the strength of your opinions, or the importance of sharing your ideas, you are going to lose the ability to shape where your career is going.” – Kathy Caprino Confidence is key as you step into being the most powerful version of you, and this is something I feel compelled to talk about given my particular lens as a former corporate VP, therapist (focused on systems and communication), researcher, and now in coaching and training with thousands of executives and professionals across 6 continents. Thousands of people struggle with confidence issues, from not feeling “good enough,” to being insecure about their skills and abilities and suffering from imposter syndrome to experiencing “perfectionistic overfunctioning” that negatively impacts our health, well-being, life satisfaction and quality of life. From working with teams, I know, too, that both new and seasoned managers and high-potential folks at startups and other types of organizations often fear they don’t know nearly enough to do their jobs well, and their confidence is flagging. This is why today I’m ingfocus on the 5 ways that your lack of confidence is hurting you, and what you can do - practically and strategically - to overcome this challenge and build your confidence and self-trust now so that it doesn’t impact your success and professional fulfillment in the future. In this episode, I reference my recent Forbes blog post, 5 Ways Your Lack Of Confidence Is Apparent And Hurting You, which I encourage you to read. If you find the information helpful in identifying and overcoming a lack of confidence in yourself, I would be so happy if you would share the article and episode episode with your teams, colleagues and friends who could benefit.

09 Mar 2023 | 252: Being Highly Sensitive Is a Superpower - Embrace and Leverage It | 00:52:21
Being a sensitive person can often feel overwhelming, especially in today’s fast-paced, hyper-connected world. And these challenges are frequently compounded by the many misconceptions that people have about sensitivity as a trait. As a sensitive person himself, our guest today, Andre Sólo, is deeply familiar with these challenges and has spent the better part of his career dedicated to shedding light on what it truly means to be a highly sensitive person (HSP) and what we all need to understand better about sensitivity. Through his work and new book, Andre is making profound contributions to those of us who identify as sensitive (even if we don’t know it yet). He is the co-founder of the website, Highly Sensitive Refuge, the world’s largest online community for sensitive people, and recently co-authored the extremely helpful book The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World. Andre is also a researcher and speaker and serves as Chief Make-It-Happen Officer of Introvert, Dear, a supportive community and resource for introverted and sensitive individuals alike. Tuning in today, you’ll learn all about what it means to be a sensitive individual, including why HSPs tend to be creative, empathetic, and highly conscientious, and why it’s so easy for them to become overstimulated. Andre goes on to unpack some of the problematic messaging that society regularly gives to sensitive boys and girls, and how this can result in people suppressing and hiding their sensitivity, rather than embracing it as one of their greatest strengths. Our conversation also explores how sensitive children are impacted by their upbringing and environment, and why the best thing you can do as the parent of a sensitive child is to accept and encourage them just as they are. Today’s episode is filled with fascinating insights into what it means to move through the world as a sensitive person and provides a helpful guide for what we can do to better understand and support sensitive individuals, allowing them to embrace and leverage their unique superpowers. As a highly sensitive person myself, I’m grateful to Andre for his groundbreaking work in this field. To learn more about this deeply human trait, and how it can shape a person's entire identity, be sure to tune in for our conversation with Andre Sólo!

Quotes: “Sensitive people are actually wired at a brain level to process all information more deeply. And that allows us to notice things that others miss, and to make connections and find new ideas that others might not make.” — @justandresolo [0:03:28] “We've spoken to highly sensitive service members who credited their sensitivity as being one of their most important traits as a military service member. So it's a very kind of flexible and valuable trait.” — @justandresolo [0:06:58] “Sensitivity comes with many strengths, both physical and emotional, and in terms of creativity and intelligence. At the same time, your brain is putting all this extra work in. So there's a cost to those gifts. And that cost is overstimulation.” — @justandresolo [0:07:22] “Just as highly sensitive people get more out of therapy, I think they probably also get more out of spiritual practice. And I can say for myself, personally, that meditating is life-changing and transformative.” — @justandresolo [0:26:46] “If you have a sensitive child, the biggest thing you can do is to accept and encourage them.” — @justandresolo [0:34:12] “If you're picking up the stress, the sadness, the anger, of all the people around you, especially if you're feeling it very vividly yourself, that is exhausting, uncomfortable, distracting. And it sometimes feels impossible to turn off.” — @justandresolo [0:42:47]

07 Mar 2019 | 61: Hearing and Heeding Your Wake-Up Call, with Darren Virassammy | 00:40:18
“It was actually a friend of mine that pointed out the juxtaposition of these two independent wake-up calls that put it all together. The juxtaposition here that was so powerful was that in that moment, I realized I have to live my potential not for me only, but for the next generation.” - Darren Virassammy Sometime in life it takes a wake-up call, or multiple ones, to help someone realize who it is they should be in life and how they are called to help others. Today’s Finding Brave guest is no exception, as his wake-up calls placed him on a path to help others realize that everyone deserves a great place to work and that any workplace can be great. Darren Virassammy is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of 34 Strong, comprised of a team that believes everyone deserves a great place to work and that any workplace can be great. A leading expert in the global employee engagement community, the 34 Strong team leverages the strengths-based approach to human development to create massive shifts within organizations, both culturally and on the bottom line. He and his team have created sustainable change in microbusinesses, all the way up to large organizational teams at the FDA, Bank of America, and The California Department of Public Health. Recently, Darren has keynoted for Hitachi Global Women’s Conference, The Rotary World Peace Conference, The Professional Grounds Management Society, and author Mike Michalowicz’s Profit Con. As Darren reveals, in order to sustain excellence we must play to our strengths and manage around our weaknesses. In this episode, he provides the tools to help identify what he calls your areas of “Grind, Greatness and Genius” that will help you truly live your own message. 12 Dec 2024 | 297: How To Begin Doing Something That Matters | 00:39:17
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! Please note: This is an updated “Holiday Selection” re-release of Episode #210. “Sit with the idea of what it would mean for you to take on a worthy goal, become the best version of yourself, and unlock your greatness by taking on the hard things. I’m asking not just for you, but I’m asking for me and my world, because it’s a chance for all of us to live a better life.” – Michael Bungay Stanier I’m very excited to share my “Holiday Selection” re-release of one of our most popular episodes, featuring the great insights of Michael Bungay Stanier. As an exciting new year is coming, with its fresh energy of possibility, what would it mean for you to find and set a worthy goal, something that is thrilling, important, and daunting at the same time? Today’s special Finding Brave guest reveals the 3 key components of a worthy goal, what it really means to commit to one, and why we don’t have to travel this path alone, because we can ask for support along the way. Michael Bungay Stanier helps people be a force for change. He’s best known for his book The Coaching Habit, which has over a million copies and has thousands of 5-star reviews online. His latest book, How to Begin, helps people find the clarity and courage to take on a Worthy Goal and start something thrilling, important and daunting. He founded Box of Crayons, a learning and development company that helps organizations move from advice-driven to curiosity-led. They’ve trained hundreds of thousands of managers to be more coach-like and their clients range from Microsoft to Gucci. Michael left Australia about 30 years ago to be a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where he shares that his only significant achievement was falling in love with a Canadian. Michael now lives in Toronto, having spent time in London and Boston. Balancing out these moments of success, he was banned from his high school graduation for “the balloon incident,” was sued by one of his Law School professors for defamation, and his first published piece of writing was a Harlequin Romance-esque story involving a misdelivered letter called The Male Delivery. I encourage you to read Michael’s latest (and very enlightening) book and let us know what lessons you glean from it. How has your energy been shifted, and what did you learn? Please feel free to reach out to Michael or me with your feedback and questions about what we discuss in this episode. Here’s to your joyful pursuit of your worthy goal!

___________________________________________________________ QUOTES FROM TODAY’S SHOW: “For me, there’s an essence of coaching which asks where you can stay curious a little bit longer. Can you rush to action and give advice a little more slowly? [6:10] “Part of why people would hire you if you’re a coach is because you’ve seen stuff, done stuff, and know stuff. It’s kind of rude not to share what you think could be of best service to that client.” [8:11] “I want people to be ambitious for themselves and for the world. I want them to be the best version of themselves, but I also want them to contribute to a better world.” [14:07] “I’m wired in a way that I’ve always been self-confident, and I’ve always had a willingness to zag when other people zag.” [19:58] “I’m just trying to get people started. I can’t take them to the end of the journey, because the journey will evolve and change, but can I get them across the threshold in taking the first steps.” [28:08] “Ask yourself what minimum success looks like, but you’re also allowed to dream about what big success looks like as well.” [31:28]

02 Aug 2018 | 31: How Imitating What You Admire Can Backfire and Get You Off Track, with Eric Termuende | 00:41:59
“Imitating these people, or trying to be these people, does not and should not equal being inspired by these people. Because if we can be inspired by these people and pull some of those qualities, characteristics and best practices that they’ve got, and apply them with a slight tweak to who we are and what we’re trying to do, that’s where the innovation starts.” - Eric Termuende Like many people, you may find yourself wanting the life that someone else may have, and look to imitate or emulate that person to get to where he or she is today. Is that the right thing to do though? Today’s inspiring guest on Finding Brave is going to explain why this is the wrong approach to take, and what we should do instead. Eric Termuende is the co-founder of NoW Innovations, a bestselling author, and an international speaker. His work has been featured in Forbes, Inc., Thrive Global, the Huffington Post, Globe and Mail, and other top media platforms. Eric was recognized as a Top 100 Emerging Innovator under 35 globally by American Express, is a TEDx speaker, and represented Canada at the G20 Summit. Eric is a thought leader on optimizing workplace culture, the future of work, and engagement in the workplace. He provides key actionable takeaways on how companies can drive engagement through connection and trust. Eric dispels generational groupings to re-humanize and gain more out of the workforce. Having given nearly 200 presentations, he goes beyond diversity and inclusion to help audiences understand people and patterns in order to optimize the workplace. He is the author of a new bestselling book, Rethink Work. Eric is an amazing young leader whose wisdom and thoughts around leadership will inspire you want to be yourself, because it’s often what we aren’t that will differentiate us the most on our journey. 06 May 2021 | 174: The Transformative Power Of Servant Leadership, with Howard Behar | 00:35:51
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Everything you do in life is about serving another human being, and as long as you stay focused on that, you’ll never burn out. You may get tired, we all get tired, but you’ll never get bored of it because you’ll always understand what you’re here to do is to help other people. That is always energizing.” - Howard Behar You may have heard of servant leadership and the transformative power of it in our organizations, careers and lives, but for most people, they’ve never seen it in action so it remains a vague and elusive concept. To address this important topic and to help us learn specifically how to embody servant leadership in our lives, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with an individual who has dedicated his entire life to servant leadership, and embodies it both professionally and personally. Howard Behar's career in business spans over 50 years, all in consumer oriented businesses covering several industries. He retired from Starbucks Coffee after 21 years where he led both the domestic business, as President of North America, and was the founding President of Starbucks International. During his tenure, he participated in the growth of the company from 28 stores to over 15,000 stores spanning five continents. He served on the Starbucks Board of Directors for 12 years before retiring. Hailed as “a hero of conscious capitalism,” “a passionate advocate for leading with purpose,” and a devoted student and teacher of the Servant Leadership Model, Howard’s motivational message inspires everyone to be a servant leader and to lead with and from their values first. As a renowned leader, speaker, author and mentor, Howard’s wisdom, generosity, and level of integrity have had a profound impact on thousands of people who have been touched by his example, books, and speaking. As the ultimate servant leader, Howard is known for such memorable lessons as “The Person Who Sweeps the Floor Should Choose the Broom” and “Only the Truth Sounds Like the Truth.” Howard is also the author of the classic book It’s Not About the Coffee, a guide to leading by putting people first, and The Magic Cup, a parable about the power of personal values, and he now travels the world speaking to leaders, organizations, and students. In today’s episode, Howard reveals the steps you can take to become a servant leader yourself, along with his powerful “6 P’s” that can become a powerful framework for the way you live. Living these traits will make a profound impact not only on your own life, but in the lives of every other human being with whom you interact. 27 Jun 2019 | 77: 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Leaving Corporate and Launching My Business | 00:38:26
“I know it’s scary to make the move from corporate life into your own business and you feel like you don’t know enough, but I’m going to ask you to really listen to yourself. You know a heck of a lot more than you think you do.” - Kathy Caprino Are you ready to finally leave your corporate career and start your own venture? Or perhaps you have launched your business already and are facing important new challenges that you wonder if you’re adequately prepared for. In this episode, I discuss why so many small businesses fail and share my raw, real-life experiences around what I learned in transitioning from my 18-year corporate career to running my own coaching and consulting business, Ellia Communications. You’ll hear about the biggest gaps in knowledge and experience that kept me from having a smoother transition, and I offer some essential information that I wish I had understood before making the leap. The biggest surprise for me in running a business was that even though I had been in marketing for years and had risen to the level of Vice President overseeing numerous large-scale programs, initiatives and staff in my corporate life, I still was very far away from being fully prepared for entrepreneurial life, and for serving as a true leader in my own venture. The key knowledge gaps I explore here include: 1) Unconscious tendencies and blocks around successfully managing and relating to money, 2) Not selecting the best partners and why we often continually fail at it, 3) Why we need to step up to being a true leader and making critical decisions rather than staying stuck as the “doer” or “manager,” 4) Why pivoting more quickly and flexibly is essential, and 5) Listening to your own instincts and intuition and making moves that align with your truest core values and visions rather than deferring to “gurus” who don’t necessarily know their stuff or have your best interests at heart. “What you’re trying to do is find the gaps in your team, so that you can have somebody that complements you, because if you don’t have that you’re literally just going to be gritting your teeth trying to do stuff that you don’t like to do anyway. Scaling is very difficult when you hate half of the time that you’re working.” - Jaime Masters Would you like to know how to make a million dollars doing the heartfelt work that you love? Today’s Finding Brave guest helps entrepreneurs scale from 6- to 7-figures and higher, and she’s here to share the biggest differentiator between business owners who struggle to scale and never get there, from those who achieve net worth millionaire status and love their work. Jaime Masters has been featured on Yahoo's homepage 6 times, and in Inc, Entrepreneur and Business Insider. She's been a top business coach for over 10 years and has helped hundreds of 6- & 7-figure entrepreneurs and business owners optimize every area of their business. She's also the host of the online show Eventual Millionaire where she's interviewed over 400 self-made millionaires. She's a tech geek, has two children (and even has a sword wall in her house!) plus she loves creating automated systems and talking business growth. Jaime tells the truth in a way that makes people excited to be and do more, and the big message she shares is to love yourself on your entrepreneurial journey. Everyone, including millionaires, are going through some sort of trauma or challenge in their lives, and the key is to get into the arena, and just know that by being there, you are enough. Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “There are things you want for yourself. You do deserve abundance, and if you’re selling in this way while caring about the impact [you’re making], you should be the one that attracts the most energy. This energy can be in the form of money, or whatever currency is most valuable to you.” - Jason Marc Campbell What emotions emerge for you when you hear the words “sales” or “selling” or when you think of having to engage in sales for your own business or services? The act of selling often has a poor reputation, but the people who lose most from this mindset are good folks selling great products and services. Today’s Finding Brave expert guest helps us fundamentally shift the way we view sales by approaching the process with love, which will allow you to generate more sales than you ever thought possible, in ways that feel authentic and right to you. Jason Marc Campbell is the author of the upcoming book on Selling with Love. He interviews thought leaders from around the world on topics of leadership, team building, communication, productivity and more. He is a public speaker who’s shared the stage with the likes of Gary V, Jason Silva, Vishen Lakhiani, Lisa Nichols and more. Jason is also the host of The Superhumans at Work Podcast from Mindvalley, which I’ve had the great pleasure of joining. His mission is all about teaching companies to care more. As businesses have so much power in our world, if we can educate businesses and business leaders to take on more responsibility on how they sell, how they market, how they treat their employees and how they invest their money, we start shifting the planet to a better place for all. In this episode, Jason reveals the real reasons why most of us have resistance to selling, and how to remove those blocks once and for all. As he shares, once you identify and understand the 5 loves of selling, it will fundamentally shift how you view this topic forever. 19 Aug 2021 | 189: Listener Favorite Summer Pick: 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Leaving Corporate and Launching My Business | 00:39:56
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! This August, I’m delighted to bring you several of our top "listener favorites" episodes from the past year of shows. Today’s solo episode originally aired on June 27th, 2019. Hope you enjoy them! In this episode, I discuss why so many small businesses fail and share my raw, real-life experiences around what I learned in transitioning from my 18-year corporate career to running my own coaching and consulting business, Kathy Caprino, LLC.

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “As we learn to think the best of others, when we learn to become comfortable affirming them and when we become comfortable working for ways to serve them, then they respond and that connects us.” - Mike Stallard Today’s Finding Brave guest is someone who has played a pivotal role in the support of my coaching career, and he is one of the most kind and generous people I know - a true mentor and giver at heart, and a perfect person to explore the themes of today’s show. 25 Jun 2020 | 129: Power Gap #6: Losing Sight of Your Most Thrilling Dream Part of Kathy’s “The Most Powerful You” Series | 00:35:16
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers! “In the end, the people that bail on their dreams often pursue a direction that isn’t right for them. Many didn’t learn, or they weren’t taught, that the only constant thing in life is change and the only secure thing resides inside of you, not outside.” - Kathy Caprino At this very moment in time, the future -- and where we are all going as a society -- is on everyone’s mind more than ever. On this week’s Finding Brave show, I explore a critical power gap and chapter from my new book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss, which is Power Gap #6: Losing Sight of Your Thrilling Dream for Your Life. Things will happen to each of us that derail our dreams, and often you’ll take a direction that you think is right for you, but it ends up being the wrong path. It’s a universal experience -- that what we once believed was possible and desirable can change, and we have to change as a result. If you don’t want to wake up unhappy years from now, you have to accept this fact and realize that you alone are responsible for you how you respond to the life that’s before you, and to the challenges and hardships that you’ve faced. You alone have the power to shape your future, and now is the time to choose your own way in pursuit of the life you want to live and the mark you want to make in the world.
26 Aug 2021 | 190: Listener Favorite Summer Pick: Free Audio Chapter 6 of The Most Powerful You: Losing Sight of Your Thrilling Dream for Your Life | 00:53:44
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! This August, I’m delighted to bring you several of our top "listener favorites" episodes from the past year of shows. Today’s solo episode originally aired on July 23rd, 2020. Hope you enjoy them! “For those who’ve sold their soul for money, their professional lives can be extremely painful, crushing and in fact, unsustainable because they’ve unconsciously chosen to walk away from the exciting dreams for their lives that would bring fulfillment, internal reward and a sense of purpose.” - Kathy Caprino In this episode of Finding Brave I share the audio version of Chapter 6 of my latest book, The Most Powerful You: 7 Bravery-Boosting Paths to Career Bliss. If you don’t want to wake up unhappy years from now, you have to accept this fact and realize that you alone are responsible for how you respond to the life that’s before you, and to the challenges and hardships that you’ve faced. You alone have the power to shape your future, and now is the time to choose your own way in pursuit of the life you want to live and the mark you want to make in the world.

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “If you’ve got the highest salary in the room because you’ve been there the longest, and you’re delivering less value than a fresh graduate or a Millennial who will work for half of what you’re getting, you’ve got a problem.” - Fawn Germer Millions of accomplished professionals are killing their careers by accidentally slipping into irrelevance. They can’t figure out why they’ve sputtered out, been pushed aside or pushed out. Today’s Finding Brave guest interviewed more than 300 CEOs, senior executives, workplace experts, academics, lawyers and professionals and found out that we must immediately stage a career comeback – even if we continue to do our best work and are the best person for our job today. 29 Aug 2019 | 86: Editor’s Summer Pick #6: How To Reduce Your Stress and Ask For Help, with Andrea Goeglein | 00:44:47
I'm very excited to share our "Editor's Summer Picks!" series for Finding Brave! Throughout the next six weeks, we'll be re-releasing 6 top shows that are the special favorites from our editor Matt Mawhinney and his awesome production team at PodAssist. "We’ve made a social contract to come into this organization, however, contracts can be broken. Whichever direction it gets broken, we have to take the responsibility and either take care of ourselves and get out of it, or help fix it. There’s really very little in between, and we’re not supposed to see how much crap we can take.” - Andrea Goeglein Asking for help, especially in the workplace, often feels like we’re waving a neon sign of weakness. However, today’s expert guest -- who literally wrote the book on being brave regarding asking for help -- explains how asking for the right kind of assistance is essential to reducing stress, positively impacting our results and building a foundation for strong relationships. Dr. Andrea Goeglein has a fascinating personal and professional story, complete with important and powerful lessons learned, starting with what she realized after altering the truth of her age (of 14) to land a job at a Wall Street brokerage firm. By 24, she opened her first operating business – a Haagen-Dazs ice cream store in Reno, Nevada. Many businesses and a PhD in Organizational Psychology later, Andrea has experienced enough stress and anxiety to be an expert. Today she is a Success Catalyst and known as Dr. Success™. Andrea is the founder, curator and author of the Don’t Die™ self-development collection of books. Her latest book is Don’t Die Waiting to Be Brave. As an expert in Applied Positive Psychology, she is her clients’ success Sherpa, guiding them as they climb the mountain of success. In today’s Finding Brave you’ll not only know when to ask for help, but who to ask and how to do it in order to flourish in your professional life. The choice to ask for help is ours, and we will create even more bravery and success when we know how much choice we really have. Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers! “My heart was in self-care as a leader, and how a manager was managing their energy and taking care of themselves. I feel like if that’s handled, everything else gets handled, but if we’re burnt out and fried, we can’t lead.” - Anese Cavanaugh Our presence is our impact, and the way that we show up energetically on a daily basis really does matter. Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “If culture is the antidote, how do you define it? Where are you headed? Is there a ‘from-to’ that’s required both to embrace diversity and drive inclusion, and to thrive in this environment? I think finding ways to keep your fingers on the pulse, frequently, is really critical.” - Rose Gailey One of the most important aspects of an organization is its culture, for so many reasons, which is why on today’s episode we take a look at how organizations can take concrete steps to improve their culture and at the same time, bolster business outcomes. However, as our Finding Brave guest reveals, culture must first be defined. It is also a journey, not a destination, with the secret ingredient being communication at all levels. Rose Gailey is a partner and global lead for organization acceleration and culture shaping for Heidrick Consulting at Heidrick & Struggles, and a co-author of Future Focused: Shape Your Culture, Shape Your Future. Rose’s mission is to support positive change in the world one leadership team at a time, and to enable a world (and life!) better led. Today on Finding Brave, behavioral neurologist Dr. Joel Salinas joins us to discuss how we can navigate disagreement with confidence and resilience—and even turn it into a powerful tool for building stronger connections. Dr. Salinas is a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the co-author with Robert C. Bordone, of Conflict Resilience: Negotiating Disagreement Without Giving Up or Giving In. ——————— QUOTES: “You can't have an authentic relationship with somebody unless you're coming across and sorting through the differences we have. It's impossible to have one-to-one the exact same desires, interests, and contexts.” — @JoelSalinasMD [0:07:26] “When we're in a conflict situation, – it's very common that our first reaction is to see the other person as the problem. We want to take a stance that's more about agency and empowerment, starting with what you have control over: – your own relationship with conflict.” — @JoelSalinasMD [0:14:24] “A generous question begets a generous response – [Make] sure you're asking questions with the intent of understanding, not questions to harm the other person, put them down, or be overly defensive.” — @JoelSalinasMD [0:22:18] “Our brains evolved to be fortune-telling machines. It takes all our past experiences and memories to make predictions – and uses those predictions to make choices and take action – to help us survive and avoid danger. Out in the Savannah, that could have been helpful, – but it can be tricky when your brain is telling you interacting with somebody across lines of difference is a threat.” — @JoelSalinasMD [0:29:22] “It can be helpful to find the [bigger, better offer (BBO)]: what is the consequence or risk of me not engaging in this [difficult] conversation?” — @JoelSalinasMD [0:41:35] “Part of building this mindset and skill set is a process of reprogramming and rewiring your brain.” — @JoelSalinasMD [0:44:18] “Our brains evolved to be fortune-telling machines. 08 Jul 2021 | 183: Part 1: How to Let Go of Your Business The Right Way When It's Time to Sell | 00:24:07
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “Who was I if I didn’t own that business? Who else could I be? Business owners, as they’re preparing to exit their business, are struggling with that same issue. Who are they if they aren’t the owner of this business?” - Denise Logan As a business owner, have you ever stopped to ask yourself what’s next? Every one of us will eventually leave our work, voluntarily or involuntarily, and the key to a successful exit is about having a compelling future that is calling you toward it. Today’s Finding Brave guest has spent the last decade working with business owners and professionals who are serving business owners, to help them understand what struggles will be faced when it is time for an owner to transition out of his or her business. Denise Logan knows that to business owners, selling a business is more than a transaction. To them, it is an emotionally fraught period of transition, filled with unexpected highs and lows, with no clear vision of what waits at the end for them and their family. In this first part of my conversation with Denise (Part 2 airs on July 15th, 2021), she reveals how selling a business is a transition, and not just a transaction. When it’s treated this way all parties win, and the business can be successfully transitioned to its new owners. Most importantly, this can be done without regret. I invite you to join us next week as Denise dives deeper into this fascinating topic that is so important for every single business owner to be thinking about right now. 23 Nov 2022 | 244: Why Burnout Is An Epidemic and 3 Steps to Feeling Better Now | 00:29:16
The festive season is upon us! And while this time of year is traditionally dedicated to friends, family, and celebrations, it is often accompanied by stress and looming deadlines. It is also the time of year when many of us feel the very real effects of burnout, especially after laboring under consistently high levels of stress for most of the year. Today on the solo podcast episode, I take a closer look at the prevalence of burnout in modern culture today. I break down the reasons why I believe burnout to be an epidemic today (and research supports that belief) and offer advice on what can be done to address and prevent it. In my recent Forbes article Why Burnout Is An Epidemic and 3 Powerful Ways to Address it, I outline my observations and provide strategies and tips for shifting our behaviors and habits in ways that pave the way for reduced stress and burnout, and allow for more self-care, and emotional and physical restoration. Listeners who wish to do further exploration on this topic and learn more about how to “find brave” every day to build a happier, more rewarding and fulfilling life and career on your own authentic terms, can find helpful support in my latest book, The Most Powerful You. Today, you’ll hear a breakdown of how a confluence of unprecedented factors — such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise in remote work — have contributed to new highs in burnout rates. I unpack some key psychological concepts that important to understand, including perfectionistic over-functioning and its effects, and I explain how these habits affect our loved ones and contribute significantly to burnout. I also discuss how we can learn to identify what is within our control (and what isn’t) and begin to shift our habits and address burnout head on, in our own daily lives.
It may seem that there is simply too much outside of our control to enact meaningful change within our lives. But by making small tweaks to your mindset and introducing calming, self-restoring and balancing rituals, you can learn to identify small changes that make a big difference. To learn more about this important subject and how to create real and lasting positive change, don’t miss this episode, especially now, as we embark on a new holiday season.

Dramatic change -- whether we hoped and worked for that change or didn’t see it coming and it blindsides us -- happens to each of us at one point or another in our lives. The question is, “Are we growing stronger, happier and more of who we really are through this big change, or are we breaking ourselves against it?” In today’s episode, Kathy shares her deeply personal experiences with dramatic change in her life and career, and explores dramatic change from two perspectives: 1) What dramatic change reveals about who you really are, what you are capable of creating and achieving, and who is truly supportive in your life and 2) Four helpful ways to leverage dramatic change (even if you think it’s “terrible” and “unfair”) so that it enriches your life, and makes you feel more of who you really are, and very grateful to have faced it.

Today on Finding Brave, we sit down with Dr. Caroline Fleck, a licensed psychologist, corporate consultant, and adjunct clinical instructor at Stanford University, to explore the transformative power of validation. Dr. Fleck is a recognized expert in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), specializing in working with high-conflict individuals and organizations. Quotes: “Think about who it is you get excited about when they walk through the door – because you know it’s going to be a great conversation and then ask yourself, am I that person for someone else? Then, what behaviors make it so?” — @rdreeke [0:03:53] “We all have our own experiences, confirmation biases – all the things that impact how we see the world through our context and perception affect how we interact with everyone. It affects how I see a relationship as balanced or unbalanced.” — @rdreeke [0:13:41] “The companies that have thrived are not the ones that took it out on their employees by firing them. They’re the ones that everyone took a pay cut to stay together – because if you form a circle of safety where people feel trusted, that’s when you innovate.” — @rdreeke [0:22:47] “When you’re assessing others and the people you’re letting into your life, look at how they treat others – Do they tip well, do they not tip well, do they take care of others, do they gossip about people? Those are the [behaviors] I’m always looking at.” — @rdreeke [0:29:27] “Seek the thoughts and opinions of others instead of telling them all about yours – Speak in terms of their challenges, priorities, pain points, [and] friction points instead of yours – Be non-judgmentally curious.” — @rdreeke [0:38:45] “If you had two hours left on this beautiful planet of ours – what do you do with [them]? I’ll answer for most people. I know what I would do. Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers! “If you have done something and if you have something unique that you can do, then you deserve to help other people do that. If you haven’t done it, what’s the damn point? When he landed his “dream job” as a teacher, he quickly realized it was not what he wanted to be doing with his life. That's when his incredible entrepreneurial journey began, and in this episode he offers the steps and skills that successful entrepreneurs, business people and artists can apply to create life on their own terms. So many “successful” working professionals have followed the traditional path, yet ultimately find themselves deeply unfulfilled in their jobs. Our guest today was one such example. With his good grades at school, Steve Oehley went on to graduate from college to pursue a well-respected job as a veterinarian, only to find it brought him no joy. He has since embarked on an inspiring journey of self-awareness, founding Escape the nine to five, a podcast and coaching program designed for college-educated professionals looking to discover a career path that truly resonates with them. Given his background in veterinary medicine, Steve’s passion lies in sharing his life-changing framework with other professionals in the field. In this episode, Steve fills us in on the darker side of the veterinary profession and what can make it a stressful occupation for some. We learn about Steve’s background; what led him to the veterinary world and what moved him to pursue a new direction, as well as the inspiration for and evolution of ‘Escape the Nine to Five’ work. Steve has a very unique perspective with so many wonderful insights on what it means to escape the nine to five and how you, too, can find a more meaningful and rewarding professional direction. Simply pivoting without taking time to truly understand yourself can set you back, which is why Steve advocates for identifying your strengths within your own industry and moving forward from there. He shares advice for those looking to change careers, particularly those who feel stuck in current role and field. If these feelings of professional entrapment resonate with you, listen in to find out key steps to begin to explore shifting your career in a more productive and meaningful way.

In reading a great deal about leadership today, and interviewing top leadership experts, I’m recognizing a disappointing trend - that the general concept and understanding of leadership has become so vague and watered down that much of it isn’t helpful at all, and it’s not suited to a majority of women who want to lead differently and more authentically to their own approach, style, and values. 24 Jan 2019 | 55: Key Steps To Bringing Your Big Dreams To Life, with Ann Louden | 00:36:18
“I’m grateful for those hard challenges, because I probably wouldn’t have been brave enough to have thought big without them. If my life had been good, and perfect, and wonderful, and there was nothing that I needed to alter, then I wouldn’t have done any of the things that I am so happy to have had the chance to accomplish.” - Ann Louden If you’re a listener of this podcast, there’s a good chance you have big dreams for your life. Today’s Finding Brave expert guest is a walking example of someone who is bringing her own BIG dreams to life, and thinking “when,” not “if,” they will happen. Ann Louden is CEO and Founder of the Ann Louden Company, and consults for non-profits in higher education, the arts, social services, and healthcare. With thirty years in higher education administration, Ann is recognized in the world of philanthropy as a seasoned fundraising expert, a strategic and innovative thinker, an engaging teacher, and a passionate representative for the causes she serves. A new resident of New York City in the last year, Ann relocated from Texas to claim her second chapter of life. Even before her move, two CEO’s in the fields of higher education and adoption retained her to help them “think big” as their full-time consultant. Among Ann’s proudest achievements is the creation of a national cancer advocacy program for which she built the brand and was the spokesperson for twelve years. The stories she shares reveal her extremely innovative approach to dreaming up a brand that has the power to raise visibility, funds, and support, and at the same time, offers a unique way to honor the courage of cancer survivors and their families. As you’ll hear, Ann’s life hasn’t been without its share of struggles on her journey, but these challenges are what she feels have brought her to the new exciting place where she finds herself today. Her story will be an inspiration to others by showing that dreams don’t just “come” to us. We have to actually do the work and attend to all the details along the way to will -- and birth -- them into existence. To learn more about today's guest, visit: http://www.annlouden.com/
