More About Aspen: Hi! My name is Aspen and I am a wildlife guide at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, photographer, and canid coexistence worker. I grew up in North Carolina and went to Wake Forest University for biology, where I specifically studied wolves and coyotes. I worked heavily in Winston Salem on coyote-human interactions and coexistence. Additionally, I studied carnivore ecology and coexistence in Tanzania. More About Sarah: Sarah has been working with wolves for over 8 years. Her journey began when she was asked to do reiki healing for 3 new wolf dog rescues. It was then she was brought in with their resident Gray wolves that would forever change her life. Growing up being bullied and being an abuse survivor, she felt like she never quite fit in. It wasn't til the day she came face to face with Lomasi, a 100% pure gray wolf, that she felt like she was finally home and where she belonged. More About Cheryl & Takaya: In 2012, a lone wolf appeared on an island near Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. When he first showed up on the island, local authorities said he couldn’t survive. There were no deer to hunt, no year-round source of fresh water. They said that he would be a danger, as he was so close to the city. They debated shooting him. Yet somehow, against the odds, the wolf found a way to survive and thrive, demonstrating remarkable resilience and adaptability. This wolf is known as Takaya. For eight years, conservation photographer and naturalist Cheryl Alexander observed and documented Takaya’s life on the island. She produced a documentary about the wolf, entitled “Takaya: Lone Wolf,” which premiered on CBC’s Nature of Things in October 2019. The documentary was subsequently broadcast on BBC in the United Kingdom and on ARTE in continental Europe. The film has also been featured in several film festivals and has received widespread critical acclaim. Takaya’s story touched people around the world. There was something about his presence and bearing, his beauty and independence and elemental wildness, that deeply moved people. Following the broadcast of the film, people began to spontaneously create artwork in honour of Takaya. They sent their artwork to Cheryl, often including personal messages about what Takaya’s story meant to them. In January 2020, for reasons unknown, Takaya left the island and swam to the city’s shore. He wandered the streets of Victoria for two days. (To see a map of his path through the city, click here.) On his second day in the city, he was tranquilized and relocated to the wilderness on the west coast of Vancouver Island. In March 2020, Takaya was shot and killed by a hunter near Shawnigan Lake, approximately 50 kilometres away from where he was originally released. His death sparked outrage and deep sorrow among the global community that had gathered around him. Artists from Vancouver Island and beyond were inspired to create visual tributes to honour the life and legacy of this remarkable wolf. This artwork was featured in the Takaya Lone Wolf International Arts Festival on October 24-25, 2020. Takaya’s Legacy Project was established in order to celebrate Takaya, to share his story with a wider community, and to showcase the stunning and diverse collection of tributes that have been created in his honour. This organization will extend Takaya’s legacy by raising funds to support organizations that preserve wild spaces, protect wild creatures, and end the recreational and government-mandated killing of wolves. More Information About Edith: I am still self-employed as a cultural consultant, but I have recently emerged from retirement to work 40 hours a week as an Ojibwe Language Immersion Trainee. Prior to retirement, I served nearly 18 years as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa in northern Wisconsin. I had also served two terms on the Bad River Tribal Council. My story is featured in the book, "Love WI." I have co-authored a Ph.D. dissertation with Jessica Conaway, Ph.D. entitled, Ganawendam Ginibiiminaan, which is being edited at the publishers. I am currently working with Professor Jingyi Wei of Jinan University in Guangzhou, China on the non-tangible component of Heritage Preservation. I am also a certified Grants Specialist and Grant Reviewer and am trained to become a certified Peer Specialist. I have assisted several college students on papers as it relates to Tribal Historic Preservation, Culture and History and I was recently published in the ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science as a co-author to "Waking from Paralysis: Revitalizing Conceptions of Climate Knowledge and Justice for More Effective Climate Action, March 2022. I have provided countless interviews, including on NPR- All Things Considered, as well as numerous presentations relating to Tribal Historic Preservation to a variety of audiences, and was filmed in short videos and documentaries some are posted on YouTube. This was like no other also known as the first black owned reptile facility known to Texas. Sarah has been working with wolves for over 8 years. Her journey began when she was asked to do reiki healing for 3 new wolf dog rescues. It was then she was brought in with their resident Gray wolves that would forever change her life. Growing up being bullied and being an abuse survivor, she felt like she never quite fit in. It wasn’t til the day she came face to face with Lomasi, a 100% pure gray wolf, that she felt like she was finally home and where she belonged. Through her passion for wolves, she found an incredible community of people that share that same admiration. Finding out about wolf hunting and inhumane practices, being an abuse survivor and having the wolves become family, she knew she had to be a voice for them. What started as just wanting to share her love for wolves with a few friends grew an audience to be able to share that love and education to people all over the world. “As someone that never had a voice being bullied and abused, the wolves helped me find my voice,” Sarah said. Ben Bluhm is 28 years old and grew up in the Boston area and has lived in Utah for over six years. From Ben,"I have been seriously pursuing wildlife photography since the spring of 2022. I spend as much time as I possibly can in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. I also visit Glacier National Park at least once a year and have been to Alaska and the Canadian Rockies (Banff/Jasper) to photograph wildlife as well. I also try to find critters locally here in Utah when I can. For me, wildlife photography has moved beyond a hobby and is my lifestyle and obsession. Everything revolves around it. If I could do this every day for the rest of my life it still wouldn't be enough. At the end of the day, I want to make a difference in helping our wildlife be protected and conserved. My favorite animal (as most already know) is the Gray Wolf. I spend an insane amount of time in Yellowstone trying to find and photograph what I consider to be the most beautiful and majestic creature that walks this earth. I have been blessed to see and photograph these animals over 30 times so far in my life. The only thing that matters is protecting and conserving them. I also do volunteer work for @utahmtlionconservation and do social media and have had the opportunity to do field work. I am extremely passionate about mountain lions as well and want to do what I can to help protect and conserve them. My dog, Brady, is a border collie mix and he's my best friend. We go everywhere together! He's a constant companion on all of my photography trips. I work for an insurance company here in Utah so wildlife photography is not my full-time job!' More about KP: A marine biologist and animal behavior expert with a decade of experience in the field. But being a marine biologist isn't just working with amazing animals like walruses, sea lions, and sea otters. It’s also about people. Everyone who sees a sea otter or beluga whale up close ends up forming some sort of connection to them. It’s my job to build on that connection and use it to educate people about these wonderful animals and the fragile ecosystems they call home. This all changed during the pandemic when many facilities and resources were closed. So I started streaming on Twitch in October of 2020 as a way to fill that void. Soon, I discovered a community of people who share my passions for animals and the environment. Every show is different! Sometimes we break down viral animal videos or discuss the latest animal news. More About Lisa: My name is Lisa Kytösaho & I am a photogapher, wildlife carer and rehabilitator. I am originally from Sweden but living in South Africa, since 15 years and focus on big cats and other african wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and release. I have been a photographer for 27 years, starting as a passion and hobby and turned into a occupation. My favorite things in life have always been the same: ANIMALS Since a young age I realised my facintion and love for animals was unique and I was drawn to always be around them. I would rescue injured birds and rehabilitate them at home, I would go and feed lizards and frogs in the pond and be around any animal I possible could at any given moment. My very first pet was a mouse. Second pet was a Rabbit that I named Joker. My parents did not like to have a lot of animals but we did have a Green Iguana named Dino, Ludde the mouse, later bunnies !! and then also our beloved family dog Rex. I started riding when I was 6 years old, and never stopped. I got myself my first horse and it was a dream come true for me. My first internship was at a horse stable, my second internship was at a pet store, then my third internship was with training dogs for the police & military where I later continued to work on school holidays. That was my first payed animal job. Then I worked at a animal farm with rabbits, chickens, goats, sheep, horses & cows amongst other animals. I also have the sanctuary & rehabilitation centre open for any wildlife which is injured or orpahaned. My way, philosophy and vision is always to rehabilitate for them to go back into the wild. If this is established not an possibility, I do my best to provide the individual the correct natural and species determent enviroment to continue to live a meaninful life and thrive even within an managed setting. Other interest which lies close to my heart of course is photography and especially Wildlife Photography. I am at current utalizing my photography skills to sell eco friendly prints - for further conservation benifit. I spend my internship in Namibia working with African Wildlife rehabilitation. Got the first taste of this life and dream job! My first cheetah release back into the wild is what made me decide. I knew ecaxtly what I want to do with the rest of my life! I now own and run my very own farm, sanctuary facility and rehabiliation centre, always with focus on release back into the wild. I am sorrounded by nature and wildlife in my everyday life, working hard to develop my area. And that is how my story began!
