26 Apr 2023Red Tails (2012) ft. Matt Bone 01:24:43

In this week's bumper episode we are joined by aviation historian Matt Bone from the Damcasters podcast to tackle 2012's Red Tails. The film follows the Tuskegee Airman in Italy during the Second World War. Funded by Star Wars legend George Lucas the film aims to tell the story of how the African American pilots found themselves fighting not only the enemy but also their own military for a chance to prove their worth in the air.

With great cast and aerial CGI which stands up a decade later, Red Tails has the makings of a great film but it just can't work out quite what It wants to be. Join us to find out why we think the film is lacking!

26 Jul 2023U571 (2000)00:55:35

U-571 directed by Johnathan Mostow was surrounded by controversy when it was released in the summer of 2000. The film tells the fictional story of an American submarine crew who are tasked with capturing an Enigma machine from a damaged German U-boat. The story was seen as an affront to the real-life story of HMS Bulldog that captured an intact Enigma machine in May 1941. The controversy even made waves in the UK's Parliament. But is it a good film or does the film dive too deep and hit rock bottom? Join us to fine out.

In 2000, Joel Schumacher moved away from Hollywood Blockbusters and produced an American Vietnam drama with a cast full of unknowns and character actors. Tigerland explores the effect of military training on young men from all walks of life. The film stars Colin Farrell as a reluctant and conflicted GI and the film follows in the vein of such anti-war classics as ATTACK! and The Hill but for all its plaudits at the time of release does the film hold up more than two decades later?

09 Aug 2023Silent Heroes (1987) - The First Falklands War Film?! 00:33:05

This week we dug into the archives and found a very rare British war film. 1987s 'Silent Heroes' appears to be the first British attempt at creating a film about the Falklands War, filmed for just £90,000. Directed by Richard Driscoll and staring Martin Aylott, Robert Wilford and Bob Flag. The straight-to-VHS film is a strange beast that seems to have both pro and anti-war themes and tries to come to terms with the conflict. Strap in and join us as we try to explain this one!

24 Jan 2024The Green Berets (1968)01:01:25

We are back for the first episode of 2024! We delve into 1968's The Green Berets starring and directed (sort of) by the Duke himself, John Wayne! The film is infamously one of the very few Pro-Vietnam war films to be made, the plot concerning a team of Green Berets reinforcing a firebase in South Vietnam in the early 1960s.

Does the film hit the mark and say anything about the American involvement in Vietnam? Or does it fail drastically in delivering its jingoistic message? Join the boys to find out!

09 Oct 2024Under Heavy Fire/Going Back (2001)01:05:26

Casper Van Dien stars in 2001s 'Under Heavy Fire' also known as 'Going Back' in some regions. Directed by Sidney J. Furie, the film has an interesting premise with Van Dien playing Captain Ramsey, a US Marine Corps Vietnam War veteran, who accompanies a documentary crew as they go back to Vietnam with members of his old Company as they attempt to find out exactly what happened when he did (or maybe did not) cause an accident that caused the death of troops under his command. This makes for a film that is trope and cliche heavy with an ending that must be seen to be believed...
