27 Mar 2025Tim MacMahon unpacks ‘The Wonder Boy’ — his definitive book on Luka Dončić, Mavs00:25:50

On this episode of the Fieldhouse Files podcast, Tim MacMahon joins. You know of him from ESPN and “Brian Windhorst & the Hoop Collective” podcast. We discussed the release of his book on Luka Dončić, the process that went into it, and Rick Carlisle being there at the beginning.

MacMahon covers the Mavericks and has followed both Dončić and Carlisle throughout their time in Dallas. And so he wrote “The Wonder Boy: Luka Doncic and the Curse of Greatness."

When Dončić was unexpectedly traded to the Lakers, MacMahon had to write an additional, unplanned chapter.

Pacers fans will appreciate the story about the Mavericks’ attempt to draft Tyrese Haliburton in 2020. Carlisle’s belief in him played a significant role in Haliburton becoming a Pacer just a year and a half later.

Among the items discussed on this episode:

  • Why write this book? The process behind it, including why he’s ultimately grateful that publishing was delayed by a year.

  • Traveling to Slovenia to trace Dončić’s roots and better understand where he comes from — and why he’s so competitive.

  • The biggest thing he learned about Luka during his research.

  • Mark Cuban: The driving force behind the Mavericks trading for Dončić, and how selling a majority share of the team ultimately led to Dončić’s departure from Dallas.

  • Why Carlisle deserves credit for Dončić’s rapid rise to superstardom.

  • Carlisle’s relationship with Dončić and how that, along with his experience with Jason Kidd, shapes his partnership with Haliburton.

  • Carlisle and Haralabos Voulgaris grading Haliburton highly in Dallas and attempting to trade up for him.

23 Jan 2025PARIS — Pacers throttled by Wemby & the Spurs00:13:48

PARIS — After four days between games, the Pacers returned to action Thursday evening ... in Paris. That's right, part of the NBA Global Games. It was the first of two against the Spurs, who had a home-like crowd due to France native Victor Wembanyama.

He had a complete game: 30 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 blocks.

I am the only Indy reporter in Paris for the trip — so here's my postgame recap from Accor Arena, where a sold-out crowd of nearly 16,000 saw the Spurs’s three-point halftime lead balloon to 30 when the final buzzer sounded.

They outscored the Pacers 45-23 in the third quarter and the Pacers did not respond well in a 140-110 blowout loss. Much more coverage to come…

25 Jan 2025PARIS — Pacers' pressure, Haliburton's heater leads to 38-point win00:12:54

PARIS — Two days later and it was a much different result for the Pacers than in game 1 against the San Antonio Spurs. From a 30-point loss to a massive 38-point win Saturday evening here in Paris, France.

Tyrese Haliburton erupted for 16 straight points in the third quarter to put them up by 12, then wasn’t even need in the fourth quarter as they ballooned their lead in a 136-98 win.

The Pacers improved to 25-20 with the win, a split of the pair of NBA Global Games

“We played a lot better and we needed to do a lot of things better,” head coach Rick Carlisle said afterward.

“We obviously needed to do a better job on Victor (Wembanyama). I thought Myles Turner played a great game today and just did a lot of things that you don't see 6-11 centers in this league doing: Picking up full court, sprinting from end to end, busting over screens, busting over pick-and-roll screens when he's guarding a guy who's 7-4 handling (the ball). Just a very unique situation so Myles played a tremendous game.”

I am the only Indy reporter in Paris for the trip. Here's my postgame recap from Accor Arena, where a sold-out crowd of 15,979 saw the Pacers answer their second-biggest loss of the season with their biggest win.

29 Jul 2020Kenny Smith from 'Inside the NBA'00:17:27

My guest on this episode is Kenny "The Jet" Smith. He played at UNC from 1983-87, was drafted by the Sacramento Kings, spent 10 seasons in the NBA and won two championships with the Houston Rockets (1994, 1995). And now he's seen weekly during the NBA season on "Inside the NBA" with EJ, Charles and Shaq.

He's recently launched The Jet Academy to help train basketball players from anywhere — and he enlisted Victor Oladipo to teach young players this week. 02 Aug 2022Tyler Marsh on two seasons with the Pacers and his coaching journey00:33:45

These are the conversations I love having. It’s why I launched the podcast in the first place back in 2015.

To peel back the curtain and introduce you to members of the team behind the team.

On this episode of the Fieldhouse Files, I’m sitting down with Tyler Marsh. He’s coached at all levels, most recently on staff with the Pacers the past two seasons and is now working with Becky Hammon and the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA.

Among the items discussed on this episode:

  • His whirlwind year — finishing the season with the Pacers, joining the Aces and expecting his first child in Sept.
  • Pacers assistant coach Jenny Boucek, a close friend of Becky Hammon’s, connecting Marsh and then attending the first week of training camp. (5:48)
  • On two unique seasons with the Pacers and growing up a fan of the team. (8:20)
  • Getting paired with players for workouts, pre-game warmups. (14:20)
  • His role with the Aces and taking on more responsibilities. (17:24)
  • How this past weekend was his first visit to historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. (21:20)
  • Influence of his father Donnie Marsh on coaching and whether he tried to talk Tyler out of it. (22:15)
  • Receiving a game ball from Pacers coach Rick Carlisle and the team after his final game. (25:50)

“I spent some time with the Mad Ants, their G League team, back in 2016-17 season and I didn’t think it could get much better than that,” Marsh said. “When I was able to join the staff of the Pacers that was truly a blessing and truly a dream come true.

“My two years here, forget about the wins and losses, the Pacers are a Class A organization from top to bottom and the way that they embraced me and the way that the community embraced myself and my wife was great. I couldn’t have asked for more during my time here.”

There are just six weeks left in the regular season, and Indy is lively with the NFL Combine, Big Ten and Horizon League basketball tournaments in town — and there was a lot of Pacers subjects to touch on.

Among the items discussed on this episode:

  • Pacers on the road for 6 of 7, the end of one streak and continuation of another.
  • Playoffs are out of sight, so now what? What to watch for and what we need to see more of.
  • Two Pacers assistant coaches made decisions about jobs elsewhere.
  • Tyrese Haliburton shining in his first seven games in Indy.
  • Haliburton-Brogdon backcourt, and why Brogdon’s timeline doesn’t match.
  • All-Star weekend, Haliburton in Rising Stars and Larry Bird's absence.

22 Jan 2021Nets TV analyst Sarah Kustok on Caris LeVert and why fans will love him00:24:01

Sarah Kustok is part of the NBA's best local TV broadcast, serving as the Nets game analyst on the YES Network. She's covered the Nets since 2012 and was there when Caris LeVert joined the franchise in 2016. Since the Pacers acquired LeVert in a four-team trade, the first call I made was to Kustok to learn even more about what the Pacers were getting.

“I don’t even think he’s scratched the surface of the player that he’s going to become," she said.

On this episode of the Fieldhouse Files, I’m back from NBA Summer League and will go through my experience out in Las Vegas and how the Pacers did. • Why summer league is my favorite NBA event.

  • Ronald Nored running the Summer Pacers. (7:30)
