Keith Davies is a Cardiff-based commercial and advertising photographer.
He studied photography in college then moved to London and worked as an assistant with many talented commercial photographers before changing course and following a course in design and art direction. His love for photography never left him and he returned to the medium with the advent of digital.

We spoke to Keith in his new studio and discussed the challenges and opportunities in a commercial photographic studio and his views on the skills required to be successful.

Matt Botwood is a professional landscape photographer based in a remote part of the Brecon Beacons in south Wales.
As someone who scouts and works daily in the landscape where he has based his family home, Matt can justifiably be referred to as a true 'Landscape Photographer's Photographer' and has been recognised by his peers as such in the 2014 Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards. Ffoton asked photographer Rob Hudson to join us on our trip to Matt's home in early January 2015 and the resulting conversation between the two is fascinating listening for anyone interested in intensive project-based landscape and woodland photography.

Making a return to Wales from his home in New York to oversee preparations and the launch of his Retrospective exhibition "Chalkie Davies Photographer: The NME Years" in National Museum Wales (running May 9 to September 6, 2015), Sully-native Chalkie kindly took time out of a hectic schedule for a couple of hours to talk with Ffoton Wales.

Respected for his images of famous pop and rock artists from the 1970's and 80's for publications The NME and The Face, Chalkie created some special distinctive work in a special period of music history - and toured with Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney and Thin Lizzy . But we mutually chose to spend a couple of fascinating hours talking photography, lighting, Art and mentoring new talent. Enjoy.

ROB HUDSON IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG.
BRIDGEND, SOUTH WALES, DECEMBER 2014

Rob Hudson is an artist and photographer based in Cardiff and was our first interviewee as part of the Ffoton project.

We interviewed Rob on location at BlackMill wood near Bridgend which inspired his enigmatic and poetical work on Mametz Wood: a battle where so many Welsh Soldiers perished during WW1. It took Rob about 18 months to complete the project and he drew inspiration not only from the wood but from David Jones' 'In Parenthesis' an epic poem about the poet's recollections of World War One and the battle of Mametz Wood.

Dan Wood is a documentary photographer living in Bridgend, South Wales.
Working exclusively in film, Dan is a member of the Documenting Britain Collective and has produced a wide-ranging body of work on different themes but his best known, and probably most controversial, is the ongoing detailed study of his hometown in his 'Suicide Machine' project. We spoke with Dan on his route into photography, his passion for film and Icelandic folklore.

KEITH MORRIS IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG.

Keith Morris (1958 - 2019)

Keith Morris was a commercial photographer who lived and worked in the seaside town of Aberystwyth.

His main area of focus was the commercial and news market, deriving a significant amount of income from stock photography. Keith used his expertise, knowledge and understanding of the market to great effect. By his own admission, he did not travel far and worked primarily within a 20-mile radius of Aberystwyth and his success in commercial stock photography saw him facilitate courses on how to deliver it in an increasingly difficult and competitive area of photography. His personal work was also geared with the commercial market in mind: he had a long-held passion for working with actors and dancers in theatre and, if the opportunity arose, stills photography for television were also another source of income. Telling stories was part and parcel of Keith’s raison d'être and he enjoyed creating scenarios using actors and models but always with the commercial market in mind.

His enthusiasm for his trade was boundless. Sit back and enjoy Keith at his loudest best!

Based near the beautiful small City of St Davids in Pembrokeshire, Chris currently works within a five mile radius of his small family cottage which also hosts a gallery with a selection of his work. Popular with collectors and respected by Landscape photographers, the scenes he captures are near-timeless and far more nuanced with the inclusion of workers of the land and details of flora and fauna. Chris earns his living from his photography: limited edition prints and hand-crafted collectors Folios of his work are available via his website.

His intense passion and commitment to his projects is evident from this Ffoton Wales recorded conversation - so much so that we lost track of time and immersed ourselves in a fascinating discussion requiring two parts! Born and raised in Wales, Jack Latham studied Documentary photography at Newport before graduating in 2012 and moving to Brighton where he's now based as a freelance photographer. As a member of Welsh photography collective, 'A Fine Beginning', Jack's documentary photography projects have been published in both print and online, and he has just completed his first self-published book 'A Pink Flamingo' based on a long-term American project, also featuring in an exhibition as part of the 2015 'Looking for America' Diffusion Festival in Cardiff.

REBECCA THOMAS IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG.

2015 has proven to be a whirlwind of activity and experience for up and coming photographer Rebecca Thomas. David Hurn is still working, photographing and publishing at the age of 81 years and is regarded as one of Britain's most important reportage photographers.

A self-taught photographer who began his career in 1955 as an assistant at the Reflex Agency, he gained his reputation with his reportage of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. David became an associate member of Magnum Photo in 1965 and a full member in 1967. Here in Wales, he set up the famous School of Documentary Photography in Newport in 1973 where he remained for 17 years. We met with David following the publication of a new book 'The 1960s: Photographed by David Hurn' published by Reel Art Press which demonstrates the breadth and strength of iconic images that defined the period.

This first part of our two-part in-depth conversation covers David's route into photography, individual style and 'Authorship', being a professional photographer, projects he has covered - including the Aberfan tragedy in the South Wales valleys.

Having studied photography under Magnum photographer David Hurn at Newport, he has worked on numerous commissions for national newspapers and magazines including work published in the Times, Sunday Times, Observer and Guardian newspapers.

Based in Cardiff, Nigel Pugh is a Social and Environmental photographer with a passion for documenting and promoting the relationship between people and the ecology of the natural environment in and around their local communities.

His event and documentary photography records the tensions between ordinary citizens, activists, State and business in protecting an ongoing symbiotic relationship with nature and the promotion of a more socially equitable society. In 2015 he staged his first photography exhibition YOUR NATURE - ‘TO PRESERVE AN EPHEMERAL STATE’ in Cardiff with a percentage of print sales going to Friends of the Earth Cyrmu and Wildlife Trusts Wales.

MARIAN DELYTH IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG.

Marian Delyth has worked as a freelance photographer and graphic designer from her studio in Blaenplwyf since 1982.

She studied graphic design at Newport College of Art where she also took an active interest in photography - sitting in on guest talks arranged by David Hurn for Documentary Photography students. Marian was one of the small but very active group of photographers whose efforts led to the formation of the original Ffotogallery in Cardiff. After college, she worked in an advertising studio before returning to teach in Coleg Ceredigion.

Her work can be seen in numerous publications and she has won numerous awards for her work. In 2000 photography became a priority and her time is shared between photographic commissions, developing personal projects, conducting workshops and occasional teaching.

Aled Jenkins studied Photography and Film at Plymouth College of Art and Design before working as a photojournalist, specialising in covering conflicts around the world.

In 1992, he returned to Wales to train as a television cameraman and has been freelance since 1997 - in demand both in the UK and abroad as a skilled cameraman and documentary film maker. Aled is the recipient of the 2016 BAFTA Cymru award for Best Factual Photography for his work on the BBC series 'Patagonia'. Ffoton talks with Aled about his career and his ongoing love of stills photography.

ROBERT HAINES IN CONVERSATION WITH BRIAN CARROLL

Hailing from the small mining village of Heolgerrig near Merthyr Tydfil, Robert Haines is an award-winning filmmaker and photographer.

“I’m just a hick from the sticks” - Peter Jones

After studying at Manchester College of Art and Design in the late 1960's, Peter Jones moved into photography as first assistant to London Advertising photographer John Thornton. But the quieter life of West Wales saw Peter return to run the family farm and put photography aside for 30 years.

His body of subsequent photography (much of it still unseen) includes an intimate record of rural life in West Wales, including his 'Welsh Farming Community' project. With his health in decline, Peter kindly agreed to Ffoton visiting him at home rear Aberystwyth. We're glad we did: not only is Peter a knowledgeable photographer with a wicked sense of humour but also a very talented artist who passed away in 2017. Enjoy this in-depth conversation with a very humble but extremely passionate Welsh photographer. AL BRYDON IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG

Al Brydon is a talented (and deceptively unassuming) photographer based in the North of England.

His deeply personal interpretation of the Landscape where he was brought up continues to produce images of scarred and often abandoned locations with a long history. Al is one of the founding members of the 'Inside the Outside' landscape collective and has recently published his stunning image collection of 'Based on a False Story' with Another Place Press.

RHODRI JONES IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG

Ffoton talks with respected documentary photographer Rhodri Jones.
Born in Gwynedd, Wales, Jones has been based near Bologna, Italy since 2000.
He has worked as a professional photographer on both personal and commissioned projects around the globe since 1989 and has had five personal photographic volumes published. Described by Magnum photographer Philip Jones Griffiths as “a Welsh poet with a camera”, Rhodri has exhibited in China, Eire, France, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, UK and USA. Distributed by Panos Pictures since 1992, his images have been used by leading magazines, newspapers, NGOs and publishers worldwide.

His work is held in several public and private collections.
Recorded in Aberystwyth, 1st October 2016 immediately following Rhodri's presentation and talk at the EYE International Photography Festival.

SIÂN TRENBERTH IN CONVERSATION WITH GLENN EDWARDS

Siân Trenberth is one of the most respected people photographers in Wales. Based in Cardiff, she photographs performers, creatives, families and business people in a classic, natural and atmospheric style.

As a dance photographer she takes photographs for professional companies, vocational courses and dance school productions. She is equally in demand by Casting agencies, actors and performers for her natural headshot photography. Siân has worked as a professional photographer since 1992 and her credits include: English National Ballet, Channel Four, Ballet Cymru, English National Ballet School, Hello! and TV Times.

An alumni of the original Documentary Photography Course at Newport College of Art, she was tutored by Magnum photographer David Hurn. Ffoton asked fellow alumni and long-time friend Glenn Edwards to talk with Siân about her career and reflect on the fast-changing business of commercial photography.

JILL FURMANOVSKY IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG

Jill Furmanovsky has been a professional photographer since 1972.
She is best known for her images of rock bands and in 1972 she became the official photographer for London’s premiere rock venue The Rainbow Theatre. She has photographed all the big names in rock from Led Zeppelin to Oasis and in 1992 won the Jane Bown Observer Portrait award for the portrait of Charlie Watts. In 1998 she established Rockarchive to encourage recognition for the art and protect the rights of rock photographers.

Ffoton had the great pleasure of meeting and talking with Jill in Aberystwyth at the 2016 EYE International Photography Festival.

CHUCK RAPOPORT IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG

American I.C. (Chuck) Rapport had a successful career as a professional photojournalist working for many notable publications known for their outstanding photo essays, such as Life Magazine, Paris Match, Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated and more.

Whilst best known here in Wales for his assignment for LIFE Magazine covering the aftermath of the Aberfan disaster in 1966, Ffoton sat down for a conversation with Chuck to reflect on his start in photojournalism in the late 1950's and experiences through his career. What a great storyteller!

CLAIRE THOMAS IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG

Claire Thomas is a photojournalist hailing from Carmarthenshire but now travelling the world capturing images that document human rights issues and conflict zones.

Self-taught, Claire's photography has been featured in numerous publications including National Geographic Magazine, Geographical Magazine and Al Jazeera English.
Claire is one of a rare breed of young female photojournalists working in dangerous conflict zones such as the Middle East and Palestine.

Ffoton welcomed the opportunity to meet her during a short visit back in Wales before setting off for assignments in Iraq.

Studying photography alongside Martin Parr at Manchester Polytechnic in the early 1970's, Daniel Meadows has remained passionate about social documentary photography, education and storytelling ever since. His photography archive, held in the Library of Birmingham, is an important record of British society through the 1970's and 80's - and his influence can be seen in contemporary photography in the UK and further afield.

Following our interview, Daniel's important archive moved to the Bodleian Library in Oxford in 2019.

BERNARD MITCHELL IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG
SWANSEA, JANUARY 2018

After studying photography at Berkshire College of Art in the mid 1960's, Bernard Mitchell began his long career as a photojournalist working for Thomson Regional Newspapers.

He returned to Swansea many years later and in 2003 studied for a Masters degree in photography at Swansea Metropolitan University. Back in 1966 as a student, he started a project to document the circle of painters, writers and musicians who had associated with Dylan Thomas in their homes and studios but that project extended to cover the wider arts, literature and photography communities across Wales and continues to this day.

A new book titled 'Pieces of a Jigsaw' published in late 2017 presents a selection of images from his ongoing Welsh Arts Archive project. Bernard gifted his archive of photographs of artists and writers of Wales to the Richard Burton Archive at Swansea University in 2016.

Ffoton had the great pleasure of speaking with Bernard at his home in early 2018.

MICHAEL CHRISTOPHER BROWN IN CONVERSATION WITH RICHARD SAMBROOK
BRISTOL, FEBRUARY 2018
(released on the Ffoton podcast 1 April 2018)

Michael Christopher Brown is an American photojournalist and documentary photographer who immersed himself in travel and covering foreign assignments - including major conflict zones - professionally from 2006. He has been a contributing photographer at National Geographic since 2005 and joined Magnum Photos as a nominee in 2013 and was an associate from 2015 until June 2017.

Probably his best known work to date is his monograph 'Libyan Sugar' which won the Paris Photo First Photobook Award and the International Center of Photography's 2017 Infinity Award for Artist's Book. This unique book demonstrated his skill in using primarily an iPhone to photograph the Libyan Revolution from 2011-2012 where he covered several battles, was ambushed several times and injured twice. He survived the same mortar attack that killed his close friend and photojournalist colleague Tim Hetherington.

Ffoton spoke to Michael in early 2018 during a trip to the UK to plan his next book on Cuba where, as part of his 'Paradiso' project, he's been documenting the electronica music and youth scene in Havana. Whilst working there, he witnessed the national grieving and had exclusive access to the funeral cortege of the late leader Fidel Castro as it travelled from Havana to his grave in Santiago. Michael is currently working on a large documentary project on native Americans.

We were pleased and grateful to have Professor Richard Sambrook conduct the interview - an experienced journalist and ex-Director of News at the BBC who oversaw their coverage of the 2003 Iraq conflict.

And thanks also to Martin Parr and his team who kindly accommodated us for the recording on a busy day at The Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol.

PAUL CABUTS IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG

Ffoton had the pleasure of talking with Welsh photographer, educator and, from 2017 the Honorary Research Fellow at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, Paul Cabuts.

With a long career in photography education in Wales and having returned after two years as Director of the Institute of Photography at Falmouth University, Paul is a respected authority on the development of photography in Wales. We discuss the history and education of photography in Wales to the present day; Paul's book on the legacy of W. Eugene Smith's work in Wales in the 1950's; and his current research at Museum Wales which includes the work of David Hurn.

SKIN PHILLIPS IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG & DAN WOOD

Hailing from Swansea and regarded as a legend in world skateboard photography, Skin Phillips has a career in the sport spanning over 30 years.

He’s worked as a photographer and had his images featured in some of the world's leading skate magazines, been editor-in-chief of Transworld magazine and the skate team manager at powerhouse brand Adidas.

Now spending less time in San Diego in California and coming back to his home town of Swansea, we grabbed the opportunity to talk with Skin along with fellow-skater and photographer Dan Wood.

Skin's work will be shown in the upcoming 'Against the Grain: Skate Culture & the Camera' exhibition in London from 7-22 July 2018.

BRIAN DAVID STEVENS IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG
CARDIFF, SEPTEMBER 2018

Ffoton talks with professional photographer Brian David Stevens about his career and many projects. Brian is based in London but his parents hail from the Welsh valleys where they still reside.

Covering many personal projects in his career, Brian spends long periods of time photographing people and places with an artistic eye and great sensitivity. His well known "They that are left..." : 'Remembrance' portraits of War Veterans’ was produced over a ten year period, and his more recent ‘Beachy Head’ beautifully explores a UK landscape well known for its iconic chalk cliffs but their height also making the area one of the world’s most notorious for suicide.

Brian's portrait of Wilko Johnson is held in the National Portrait Gallery and portrait of Jock Scot in the National Galleries of Scotland Collection.

PAUL REAS IN CONVERSATION WITH DAVID HURN
TINTERN, FEBRUARY 2019

Paul Reas has a long career in UK photography during which he has worked as an editorial and advertising photographer before moving into education.

Respected for his gritty documentation of the UK’s working class and consumerism, Paul’s colour work is considered part of the new movement in colour during the late 1980’s and early 90’s along with others such as Anna Fox, Martin Parr and Paul Graham. He was one of the first photographers to be commissioned by Ffotogallery to contribute to The Valleys Project in 1984.

Paul has recently published Fables of Faubus, a 30-year retrospective photobook on his work and the title giving a hint to his love of music.

Currently course leader on the respected Documentary Photography course founded by David Hurn in Newport (now delivered at the University of South Wales course in Cardiff), Ffoton are delighted to bring the two friends together for an exclusive conversation on Paul’s work and career.

PETE DAVIS IN CONVERSATION WITH GEOFF YOUNG
MACHYNLLETH, MARCH 2019

Photographer Pete Davis first wielded a camera when he was eleven years old and has since gone on to hone his craft by being an advertising and fashion photographer and was a senior lecturer in documentary photography at the University of Wales, Newport for eighteen years - nine of which he was the course leader.

Known for his large format landscape documentary photography both here in Wales and abroad, the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth staged a major retrospective exhibition of Pete's photography in 2017 featuring work from across sixty years.

Ffoton are delighted to have recorded Pete in conversation with Geoff Young - co-curator at Ffotogaleri y Gofeb in Machynlleth in March 2109 where Pete’s work was part of a group landscape exhibition ‘Rituals of Intimacy’ - alongside work by John Blakemore, Peter Cattrell, Marian Delyth and Aled Rhys Hughes. This conversation was recorded following a morning event where the photographers gave a public talk at the gallery.

ALED RHYS HUGHES IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG
HAVERFORDWEST, MARCH 2019

Aled Rhys Hughes was born in the Rhondda and is a photographic artist and lecturer.

Aled has worked in photography for twenty five years and specialises in large format photography using 10x8 analogue cameras. He was awarded a gold medal for his fine art photography at the National Eisteddfod in Wales in 2005 for his 'Farewell Rock' series and his ‘Mametz’ series was exhibited in the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth in 2016 alongside items from the David Jones archive.

LUCY JANE PURRINGTON IN CONVERSATION WITH PAUL CABUTS

Ron McCormick trained as an artist at Liverpool School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London before moving across to photography. He played a significant role in the formation and development of photography galleries across the UK in the 1970’s - including Half Moon Gallery in London, Side Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne and the original Ffotogallery in Cardiff.

Ron taught on the Newport Documentary Photography course alongside David Hurn and established ‘The Newport Survey’ publication that students worked on as part of their studies - produced over a decade in the 1980s. He was one of the first photographers to be commissioned by Ffotogallery to produce work for the highly regarded ‘Valleys Project’ in the 1980s and his documentary work of the changing landscape and communities in the south Wales valleys as coal mining disappeared in the region is considered to be some of the best produced.

His work is held in the Arts Council Collection and in private collections. He has lived and worked in Newport since 1977 and continues to be an active member of the Newport art and photography scenes. A major exhibition of his south Wales work 'How Green was my Valley' will open at Newport Museum & Art Gallery on 21 September and run through to 14 March 2020.

RON McCORMICK IN CONVERSATION WITH PAUL REAS
CARDIFF, JUNE 2019

Part 3 of 3

Ron McCormick trained as an artist at Liverpool School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London before moving across to photography. He played a significant role in the formation and development of photography galleries across the UK in the 1970’s - including Half Moon Gallery in London, Side Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne and the original Ffotogallery in Cardiff.

Ron taught on the Newport Documentary Photography course alongside David Hurn and established ‘The Newport Survey’ publication that students worked on as part of their studies - produced over a decade in the 1980s. He was one of the first photographers to be commissioned by Ffotogallery to produce work for the highly regarded ‘Valleys Project’ in the 1980s and his documentary work of the changing landscape and communities in the south Wales valleys as coal mining disappeared in the region is considered to be some of the best produced.

His work is held in the Arts Council Collection and in private collections. He has lived and worked in Newport since 1977 and continues to be an active member of the Newport art and photography scenes. A major exhibition of his south Wales work 'How Green was my Valley' will open at Newport Museum & Art Gallery on 21 September and run through to 14 March 2020.

PETER CATTRELL IN CONVERSATION WITH PETE DAVIS
MACHYNLLETH, SEPTEMBER 2019

Born in Glasgow and now based in London, Peter Cattrell studied photography at London College of Printing and has taught photography part time at Central St Martins, Camberwell and London College of Communication.

Highly regarded for his landscape photography made in Britain and Europe, Peter works primarily with film and fine printing techniques. These skills as a master printer brought him to the attention of the renowned photographer Faye Godwin who worked with Peter to print her black and white landscapes of the British countryside. In his own work, Peter draws inspiration from locations through historical research and personal association.

His work is held in numerous Collections around the world, including the V&A, London; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; National Galleries of Scotland; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Goldman Sachs, London and National Trust for Scotland.

Spending time when he can in Wales by making new work around Machynlleth and mid Wales area, we caught up with Peter on a recent visit to Ffotogaleri y Gofeb. Ffoton are grateful to Peter and Pete Davis for agreeing to record this conversation and we’re delighted and honoured to have two exceptional analogue landscape photographers featured here.

AMANDA JACKSON IN CONVERSATION WITH ELLIE HOPKINS
COLWYN BAY, OCTOBER 2019

Canadian by birth but resident in the UK since 2001, Amanda Jackson is a commercial portrait and lifestyle photographer based just over the Welsh border in Malvern.

After studying photography in Hereford she has continued to build a portfolio of work for numerous clients whilst also developing her own personal projects. Her lifestyle work has been featured in various publications including The Observer, The Guardian, The Independent; Marie Claire, In Clover Magazine and Photoworks Annual.

Her ongoing personal project ‘To Build A Home’ which documents the people and setting of the Lammas Eco Village in Pembrokeshire gained her Arts Council funding in 2013 and making the photographs inspired her to purchase a small plot of land nearby - providing a lure and impetus to revisit the site with her camera. Work from the series has been exhibited in Aberystwyth, The Northern EYE Festival and Ffotogallery and several prints are held in the archive at The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.

Ffoton managed to pin Amanda down at the 2019 Northern EYE Festival in Colwyn Bay to record a conversation with fellow photographer Ellie Hopkins. Our thanks to both.

NICK WYNNE IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG
COLWYN BAY, OCTOBER 2019

Hailing from Merseyside, Nick Wynne’s life-long passion for photography is evident in his self-initiated projects documenting people and communities - both here in the UK and wider afield.

Based in the Wirral not far from the border of the North Wales coast, his passion started in the school darkroom and led him to study photography at Wolverhampton Polytechnic College before being accepted on the Documentary Photography course in Newport. 

Nick’s early and ongoing work stands out on Instagram - the online platform where he chooses to share examples of his of photography. Early in his study, his close documentation of a Traveller community in Flintshire resulted in a series of strong images that then fuelled a desire travel to America, Romania and more recently, a Syrian refugee camp in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon to document people and communities ‘on the edge’. His Traveller and Romanian images caught the eye of Offline Journal - resulting in a feature article and cover of issue 3 in 2019.

HAYDN DENMAN IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG

Haydn Denman has been a documentary photographer for over twenty years whilst also following his main career as a multi-BAFTA award-winning television documentary cameraman and director.

Haydn has received numerous commissions in addition to British Council and Arts Council Awards to document communities and regions here in Wales, but also in other parts of the world including Patagonia, the Arctic, South Africa, Palestine and the U.S.A. His photographs have been shown in numerous exhibitions and publications. Collections of his work are held here in Wales at the National Library of Wales and Ffotogallery.

MARTIN PARR IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG
CARDIFF, NOVEMBER 2019

Martin Parr is a British documentary photographer with a long relationship with, and affection for, Wales.

Parr studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic in the early 1970’s alongside peers such as Daniel Meadows and Brian Griffin - both of whom he remains friends with to this day. He became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1988 on achieving the necessary two-thirds vote of other members but not before Welshman Philip Jones Griffiths had pleaded for them to exclude him, stating…
”…His membership would not be a proclamation of diversity but the rejection of those values that have given Magnum the status it has in the world today... Let me state that I have great respect for him as the dedicated enemy of everything I believe in and, I trust, what Magnum still believes in.”

Martin Parr’s Magnum colleagues went on to select him as President of Magnum Photos International in 2014 (a post he held until 2017) and he remains an active voice within Magnum to this day.

Parr is now one of the world’s most famous names in photography - both in terms of his ongoing raw documentation of society in saturated colour and also his life-long passion for collecting Photobooks and other ephemera. In 2017 he and his dedicated team opened The Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol to archive and exhibit not just his own work but also a rich and important collection of post-war British Documentary photography and archive material by other photographers. The Foundation also houses a world-class collection of Photobooks which is expanding weekly and includes a growing (albeit slowly) collection from Wales.

Peter Finnemore is a long established, and much respected, Welsh photographic artist based in south-west Wales. His work has long explored memory, family, culture and history, and his deeply immersive, thirty-plus year Gwendraeth House project is ongoing.

Peter studied photography at both Degree and Post-graduate levels at Glasgow School of Art under Thomas Joshua-Cooper, before gaining a Masters in Fine Art, Photography at the University of Michigan. He represented Wales at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005, and his work has been shown widely in both solo and group exhibitions in the UK and internationally, and in published titles ‘Gwendraeth House’ ,  ‘Zen Gardener,  and ‘Silent Village’.

Ffoton was delighted to speak to Peter as our first in-person conversation since the Covid-19 lockdowns in Wales, at Gwendraeth House - his family home, in Carmarthenshire. A very enjoyable day with a very passionate photographer.

LORNA CABBLE IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG
ABERYSTWYTH, OCTOBER 2022

Lorna Cabble is a Cardiff-based photographer holding a first class BA Degree after graduating in Photojournalism and an MFA in Documentary Photography, both from the University of South Wales.

She is currently one of two full-time specialist Stills Officers managing and commissioning stills photography within the Digital and Marketing Department at Welsh Television Broadcaster S4C.

Lorna’s impressive and ongoing personal photography projects explore themes in theatre, performance and collaboration. Her work has been exhibited previously in group shows, including one with the Phrame Collective of female photographers in South Wales and a 2021 solo show at the Workers Gallery in Ynyshir titled ‘Funny Little World’ showing a selection of her Burlesque and Cabaret documentary work.

Steve is now retired from photography but was one of the top names on Ffoton’s hit list of photographers to interview when planning for our website and podcast in mid-2014. Mission accomplished.

This is the first of three parts, and explores Steve’s entry into photography, his time on the Newport Documentary Photography course, and the formation of the Ffotogallery in Cardiff.

This is the second of three parts where Steve recalls a busy period in his career including being shot in Northern Ireland during the Troubles there. After relocating from the UK to New York in the USA where he undertook many big assignments - including his image of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, for the cover of TIME magazine - he and Kate moved to Paris where he took on assignments across Europe for Press titles across the world. The couple then decided to move back to Wales in the UK where he focussed more on Corporate photography - all the while retaining copyright in his images and continued to build a valuable archive of his own images.

ROO LEWIS IN CONVERSATION WITH EMYR YOUNG

Ffoton talks with London-based commercial photographer Roo Lewis.

Memories of trips to Wales to visit his grandfather in Pembrokeshire had a lasting impact on Lewis - including those passing the vast steel works in Port Talbot located just off the M4 motorway. Now a busy professional photographer, Lewis has documented the town and people in recent years, creating an intimate portrait of the town, its landscape and eccentric characters – published in 2023 in his photobook 'Port Talbot UFO Investigation Club' by GOST Books.

WALTER WAYGOOD IN CONVERSATION WITH BRIAN CARROLL
MERTHYR TYDFIL, MAY 2024

Walter Waygood studied Fine Art at Newport College of Art in the 1970s where he was introduced to the large format camera and, from that point onwards, has incorporated photography into his art, design and photomontage disciplines.

Waygood's work was inspired by the German portrait documentary photographer August Sander and the American photographers of the 1930’s Farm Security Administration. Here in Wales, he continues to be inspired by the landscape and people of his home environment Blaenafon, South Wales. His photography provides a commentary of working class life in the area during the 1970‘s. His interest in photography as a form of social commentary led him to make more political statements through his pictures during the miners strike of the 1980’s and he was one of the photographers selected as part of Ffotogallery's 'Valleys Project' in the 1980s.

His work is held in the collections of The National Library of Wales, National Museum Wales and The British Library.
