02 Jul 2023From a Failing Business & Debt to a $100M Fashion Business, Meet Showpo’s Jane Lu (aka The Lazy CEO) (Part 1)00:43:41

This is Jane Lu for Female Startup Club

Hi everyone and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl! If you’ve just found us - welcome welcome welcome. Every week we’re learning from some of the world’s most brilliant minds in business. Like Jane Lu, the founder of Showpo. Jane’s story is so inspiring and full of ups and downs and what really stood out to me was her sheer determination to succeed and the absolute resilience to keep going no matter what because failure just wasn’t an option. I came off this episode feeling so inspired and I know you will too. Jane is the queen of building a business while having some serious fun along the way and she shares so many gems to building her biz to $100m in revenue in this episode! Stick around to the end where she shares some of her crazy stories!

A great piece of advice in this episode came down to putting in place systems and processes that will mean that you can then start hiring people to work in the business, so you can start working on the business; it’s the first step. It’s so hard for an entrepreneur because you’re so busy doing it that you don’t want to slow down and think about systems, but you’ve got to think about the bigger picture. Build that foundation. From there on, you can start hiring for your weaknesses. Hiring people to work on the business, people to bounce ideas off. Understanding what you don’t like and what your blind spots are. A bit of outsourcing but also in-housing.

Before we jump in a quick reminder on the girl codeeee - you know we love it! And I’m doing a call out for our loyal listeners to be involved in our new content series where you DM me a voice note or a question about anything across business, life, or relationships to feature on the show! You can send it to me personally on Instagram or through Female Startup Club’s Instagram - I’m so excited about this one!

Let’s get into today’s episode, this is Jane for Female Startup Club.

15 Dec 20226 quick questions with Parisa Fowles-Pazdro, Founder of The Maxbone (Part 2)00:10:19

This is Parisa Fowles-Pazdro for Female Startup Club.

Welcome back to the show - it’s Doone here, your host and hype girl. On the show today we’re talking with Parisa Fowles-Pazdro - the founder of Maxbone.

Parisa spent a vibrant childhood growing up in Iran until the war forced her parents to leave for Sweden to start over with nothing. It was during this time she got the drive to succeed and started her journey to give her parents back everything that they lost. First by working 3 jobs to save enough money for a condo and using that to climb the property ladder and then by tapping into her unique design sensibility to start a business. Parisa recognized that the lack of high-quality products and elevated shopping experience were gaps in the pet market she could fill. Parisa built Maxbone to become a community-driven pet and lifestyle company, and continues to grow a successful team to build upon that vision, culminating in a strong market experience that creates a cultured, current, and loved brand.

This is such an inspiring and open conversation especially around the topic of raising investment and what it truly means to go down that pathway in the VC world with plenty of advice you can take for yourself. You’ll also love the part where we break down partnerships and how you can replicate this blueprint in your own business.

But just quickly before we jump into this episode, I’m wondering if you’ve joined our new tool and private community for small business owners called Majic? It’s launched just this week and we’re accepting founding members on the founding members rates. You’ll be able to meet women like Parisa in intimate workshops as well as like minded founders building the future of DTC brands. Once you sign up you’ll be able to book your 1-1 call with me so I can get up to speed with where you are in the journey. I’m so excited and I can’t wait to meet you and hear about what you’re up to! If you’ve got any questions just shoot me over an email to hello@femalestartupclub.com!

06 Jul 20236 quick questions with Laura Henshaw, Founder of Kic (Part 2)00:07:11

This is Laura Henshaw for Female Startup Club

Hello and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl! If you’ve just found us - hi! I’m so happy you found us. Every week we’re learning from some of the world’s most brilliant minds in business. Like the co-founder of Kic - which you might have previously known as Keep It Cleaner, which was founded by Laura Henshaw and Steph Claire Smith (now Miller).

Today we’re chatting with Laura who is the CEO of the Kic App and we’re really diving into her mission to help others embrace self-acceptance and make sustainable changes towards a healthier, happier lifestyle. The KIC app is like your best friend in health and wellness, literally in your pocket. It helps you with easy yummy soul-nourishing food recipes and workout programs you can literally do from home.

I really loved this episode because Laura talks us through her journey from turning her experience in a toxic industry into a life-changing, high-impact company that helps women positively every single day. We talk through how she manages running a business as the CEO with her life outside of work - a battle we all seem to face, the real costs of developing an app, and her tips for getting started if you have an idea.

Before we jump in a quick reminder on the girl code - if you get something out of this episode please share it, review us, or send us to a friend - it all seriously helps and the compound effect is huge. You know I love the compound effect. And I have been feeling so loved after reading all the beautiful reviews you’ve been leaving on the show. Oh! And we’re still doing a call out for our loyal listeners to be involved in our new content series where you DM me a voice note or a question about anything across business, life, or relationships to feature on the show! We’re going to batch record a bunch of the best ones we get in - and we’ve had some real crackers so far - just voice note us a DM on Female Startup Cub’s Instagram and you’ll be featured on the show in the coming weeks.

28 Oct 2022Fave Hits: How to pitch (and land) Sephora with Tower 28’s Amy Liu (Part 1)00:45:58

Today we’re learning from Amy Liu of Tower 28. We’re covering how to make your pitch count when it comes to getting stocked into retailers like Sephora + how to be a best seller at Sephora, and how she stands out in a saturated market.

Tower 28 is an Insta-favorite clean beauty brand designed for sensitive skin and made for all. Created with a hint of nostalgia (hello Juicy Tubes!), Tower 28’s products are bold, playful, and accessible (with all price points under $28!). With the message that #ItsOkayToBeSensitive, Tower 28 is the first and only beauty brand to follow the National Eczema Association’s Ingredient Guidelines. That means 0% irritating ingredients and 100% safe for sensitive skin. It's also clean, vegan, rigorously dermatologist-tested, and made in the USA.

We can all learn a lot from Amy’s out-the-box approach to pitching. Without giving too much away, she dives into why you need to make buyers feel the brand. Really animate it. Really stand out in a way. It’s like any relationship, the first thing you want is for them to say yes. But you don’t just want them to say yes. You want them to be SO excited to be doing this. The whole thing is: you want them to be your advocate internally, so that when it does come to launching they’re your cheerleader. And all the details on just how to do that are packed inside the episode.

So, let’s get straight into it!

14 Mar 20236 quick questions with Meagan Pate, Founder of STRAAND (Part 2)00:08:38

This is Meagan Pate for Female Startup Club.

Hey guys, welcome back to the show -

Today’s episode is sponsored by the DONUT, a 100% FREE newsletter committed to making the news more enjoyable, sign up today at thedonut.co/hype.

And if you’re new here! Hi! I’m Doone, your host and Hype girl in business. Every week we learn from 7, 8 and 9-figure female founders to understand their blueprint in business when it comes to money, marketing and mistakes. Women like Meagan Pate, the Aussie founder shaking up scalp care.

Meagan spent her teen years trying every home remedy for dandruff she could find, and would often cancel plans over her flakey scalp. Lightbulb moment!!! In 2020 she met her now co-founders and started working on launching STRAAND to market. And it’s been a bit of a whirlwind since then! This episode is packed with so many gems you are going to love this.

I particularly loved diving into the subject of co-founders, and searching for the right people based on their skillset; what could make this business the best it could be? It's probably the most valuable resource you can have. You need to consider what’s right for you and right for your brand; go into it with as much understanding as possible of what that might mean. There’s nothing to lose if it’s a business relationship. When business isn’t going well it’s high pressure, it's something to be mindful of. You could have the best friendship in the world but that doesn’t necessarily translate to a work relationship.

While I’ve got you here. Remember that you can access our doc for every grant that’s currently live around the world right now for female founders. You can get the list at femalestartupclub.com/grants.

Ok! Let’s jump into today’s episode, this is Meagan for Female Startup Club.

25 Jun 20227 key steps to successfully launching your product on Amazon00:11:39

Hi everyone! Doone here - your host and hype girl. Thank you for tuning in to my solo episode this week.

Today, I’m bringing you another workshop inspired special, brought to you through the Hype Club coffee chats. If you listen regularly you’ve heard me chatting about our Wednesday virtual coffee chats in Hype Club before and this is such a great hour of the week. It’s a chance for all the founders to catch up with each other up on their busy weeks, and an intimate place to hype and support one another. We have such an awesome group of like-minded founders early on in their journey right now, and these Wednesdays have really become a highlight of my week. This is even more so the case when we have a special guest popping in to teach us a workshop in their area of expertise.

With a couple of the founders in our group looking to launch into Amazon in the near future, we invited Carina McLeod to come and teach us the initial steps to getting the hang of this tricky channel. Carina is a real expert in the space, with 20 years retail and 18 years of Amazon experience behind her. She now runs an Amazon focused agency called Ecommerce Nurse ran by a team of ex Amazonians, helping sellers and vendors grow and reach their potential on Amazon in North America and Europe. In other words, the perfect woman for the job. During our session, she broke down the seven key steps you absolutely must take into consideration if you’re to succeed on Amazon. And because I know how useful that was to all of the women in the club, I’m excited to share the general roadmap with you here today.

You’ll have to tune into the episode to catch all the good bits here, but let me give you a little sneakpeek into the last step you’ve got to keep in check for Amazon success. It’s to realise your listing isn’t something that you just set up and leave to fend for itself. A set-up and leave it strategy just doesn’t work on this platform. You need to nurture it on the daily. It’s all about momentum and relevance with Amazon. What was a strategy yesterday might not be a strategy today, and you should be consistently working to optimise your listing and AB test your strategies. So, get yourself nice and familiar with the platform, because you’re in this for the long-run.

Ok that’s all for today! Thank you so much for listening in. Success for Amazon is absolutely possible for everyone, and I hope this episode allows you to focus your attention on all the right areas for that initial launch. If you want to get the extended version of what I’m talking about, you can sign up to Hype Club and watch the replays of all our past workshops, including this one with Carina from Ecommerce Nurse.

So let’s get into it, here are seven key steps to success on Amazon.

23 Jun 20226 Quick Questions with Katie Wilson, founder of BelliWelli (part 2)00:09:52

Today on the show we’re learning from Katie Wilson, founder of BelliWelli.

BelliWelli is a functional wellness brand that offers a healthy snack alternative, while also creating a movement around the very common but rarely talked about struggle of digestive health which affects over 70% of U.S. adults. Katie saw a gap in the $280 B functional food market and set out to create a treat that was made by gut sufferers, for gut sufferers, with the FIRST gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and certified low-FODMAP bar being born.

What I love about this story, is the serendipity of it all. The wildly successful billboard and merch you've probably spotted across your socials were a happy accident. It all came about because Kati knew from day one the uphill battle that she was going to have normalizing the conversation around gut issues. Many people along the way echoed "no-one is ever going to buy a food product for IBS". The billboard, "Hot Girls have IBS" came from the TikTok trends. The magic lies in the way IBS and hot girls is such a polarising thing, but it doesn't have to be. People went crazy for it. There was a line of people taking selfies at the infamous billboard. BelliWelli started selling the merch based on this, and to this day they can’t keep it in stock.

This episode is so much fun, Katie is a marketing genius and shares so many learnings around how she built her communities, and grassroots initiatives to get the word out there about the brand, and the billboard that went viral.

If you love this episode as much as I did recording it, remember to screenshot and share on IG to help other ears find us!

19 Aug 2022How to build a sustainable future: learn from 7 brands putting the planet first00:12:38

Hi everyone! Doone here - your host and hype girl. Thank you for tuning in to my solo episode this week.

Today, I want to dive into the blueprint of what it means to build a truly sustainable brand in 2022. To do this we’re learning from 7 guests we’ve had on the show who are putting the planet first. These are the brands leading the charge into a future where sustainability will be the rule over the exception.

It’s super relevant for any biz builders out there, because if you’re not incorporating the planet into your business model moving forward, you will be left behind. 66% of executives already believe a sustainability strategy to be a necessity in the market today, with 60% of consumers listing it as an important purchase criteria. I’m so sure that these numbers are only going to rise as we continue to feel to the harsh impact of climate change on our beautiful blue planet.

While this is so much more than a passing fashion trend, there is no denying that sustainability has become a bit of a buzz word in recent years. It’s become so prolific it almost feels we’re losing touch with both how serious we should be taking it, and just how difficult it is to properly achieve. I’m proud to have had these women on the show both open my eyes to the reality of the industry, and help us navigate how to go about this the right way. Let’s jump straight into it. Here’s are 7 key learnings from brands that are truly putting the planet first.

We learn from Kester Black founder Anna Ross about how you should incorporate sustainability in your business model from the get-go. From Charlotte Pienaar from Everyday Humans we’re reminded about the importance of focusing on the nitty gritty of the supply chain. Renewal Mill’s Caroline Cotto highlights the importance of finding your sustainability tribe along this journey. For Chippin’ founder Haley Russel it’s all about joining forces with your community to bring your product to life. In chatting to Isabel Aagaard from LastObject we’re reminded of the importance of true passion in what you’re building, whilst Blueland founder Sarah Paiji Yoo puts the greatest emphasis on the power of educating and empowering people to make better lifestyle choices. We round off the solo episode with a learnings from Repurpose founder Lauren Gropper on how to go the long-mile and not give up before you’ve reached your goals.

Let’s get straight to it! This is me, for Female Startup Club.

01 Feb 20236 quick questions with Erin Deering, Founder of The Triangl (Part 2)00:12:25

This is Erin Deering for Female Startup Club.

Hi, it’s Doone here - your host and hype girl - if you’re new here: welcome to the Female Startup Club podcast - where we interview some of the world’s most successful founders in business. We chat with entrepreneurs - who happen to be women - about all things money, marketing and mistakes - and dive deep into the blueprint that got them to where they are today.

Today we’re chatting with Erin Deering who is the founder of a cult swimwear brand you probably recognise, called Triangl. It’s one of those stories that has so many highs - it gained instant cult status within it’s first year of business, it was all over our feeds, it grew to a $200m valuation and from the outside - everything looked amazing. But on the flip side, Erin wasn’t living her best life and she was struggling. In this episode she shares the story of her highs but also of the lows and what it took to exit the business and follow her instincts. It’s rare to hear founders go so deep into the lows and this is one of those episodes we can all learn a lot from so I hope you love it as much as I did.

I particularly love diving into Erin's approach to influencer marketing right back in the early days of building Triangl, all with gifting making up the entirety of their marketing budget. The idea is that your product is still the hero, but this marketing strategy put trust into your new brand. That's the key point there, build trust. When you apply that logic with your marketing strategy, building trust with them instead of getting sales, it will shift who you target and who you reach out to. That logic is still applicable in 2023.

And if you want even more content from us, we send out an email every Monday that features strategies you can implement into your business, job opportunities at female founded startups, all the best news about women-led startups and women in business as well as new grants and other fun stuff that’s worth knowing. It’s totally free and you can subscribe at femalestartupclub.com.

19 Sep 2023Telling your Grandma you’re selling vibrators with Dame’s Founder, Alexandra Fine (Part 1)00:42:38

This is Alexandra Fine for Female Startup Club

Welcome back!! It’s been a hot second. I have MISSED this. Wow. So today after 7 weeks of not recording I’m jumping back on the show with a friend of mine, Alexandra Fine, the founder of Dame - she makes cool vibrators and is leading the charge when it comes to women and pleasure. We actually recorded an episode a few years ago which is such a vibe and you should definitely go back to hear her startup story but today we talk a lot about what it’s been like having her second baby and managing all the things, launching into 300+ target stores, what it’s like managing a co-founder relationship break down and at the veryyyy end she shares a funny story about her grandma’s best friends getting in on the vibe action. Loved this episode.

And while I’ve got you here - quick refresher on the girl code! If you listen to an episode and you smile and get value from it - take a tiny action for me. Tell a friend, share it on Insta. Subscribe. Eave a review. All these things matter and it’s the girl code!

I’m so happy to be back recording and I hope you love Al’s update in Business. Let’s jump in, this is Alex Fine for Female Startup Club.

You are going to love this really down to earth chat about building a startup and the high highs that come with the lowest of the lows. If you love this episode please do share it with someone that would benefit from hearing Daniella’s truly inspiring story.

And if you’re new here! Hi! I’m Doone, your host and Hype girl in business. Every week we learn from 7, 8 and 9 figure female founders to understand their blueprint in business when it comes to money, marketing and mistakes. Women like Tammy Green, the founder of Prene.

20 Jun 2022From her kitchen to a $360M acquisition, SmartSweets Founder Tara Bosch shares her inspiring story (part 1)00:43:01

Today on the show we’re joined by Tara Bosch, founder of the wildly successful candy brand, SmartSweets.

Since launching in July 2016, SmartSweets' mission to innovate delicious, low-sugar candy you can feel good about has remained the same – Kick Sugar, Keep Candy™. Envisioned as "the future of candy," SmartSweets aims to be a global leader in the sugar reduction movement by tackling one of the largest and most concerning ingredients in our everyday food – sugar.

In this episode, we cover Tara’s inspiring journey from starting this business in her kitchen right through to selling a major stake in the business for $360m. It’s a wild ride and I know you’re going to learn so much from Tara!

I couldn't believe how she only raised $3M to then go on to proceed with a $360M acquisition. Some seriously impressive stuff. Tara believes there to be so much stigma and idealization around raising as if that almost becomes the celebration. Realistically this can distract from the fact that the money is so you can grow your business, and those are the milestones that you should be celebrating. If you can raise no money that’s amazing, it’s much more beneficial for everyone.

There are some real nuggets of wisdom here that I know will benefit a lot of you. For example, how it may look like entrepreneurs with a certain level of success have it all figured out but that's very rarely the case. Tara thought that when you got to a certain level of success you just have this unwavering confidence that you know what you're doing and you've got it all figured out. That as you scale, this feeling comes automatically. But this just isn't the case. The feeling changes, but you rarely feel like you've got it all figured out. That's just part of the entrepreneurial ride, what keeps you going in some ways, and also something that's good to accept. There’s not one event that is the silver bullet to success, just accumulation that keeps that momentum going, and the snowball getting bigger and bigger. But you still have to push that snowball.

Stick around for the last part where Tara dives into her key piece of advice for entrepreneurs entering the candy space. For her, having a radical value proposition is one of the reasons at the heart of why SmartSweets scaled so quickly, and why they're continuing to be the market leader. To have a massively successful product and simultaneously better the world you have to take something that exists and create so much radical value that for people it’s reinventing the wheel in a very meaningful way, that sparks the emotional response of someone to your product. Make sure you have that radical value proposition.

If you love this episode remember to screenshot and share on Instagram stories to help other ears find us.

If you’re new here! Hi! I’m Doone, your host and Hype girl in business. Every week we learn from 7, 8, and 9-figure female founders to understand their blueprint in business when it comes to money, marketing and mistakes. Women like Desiree Verdejo, the founder of Hyper. 25 Feb 20236 Quick Questions with Kaylin Marcotte, founder of Jiggy (Part 2)00:10:17

This is Kaylin Marcotte for Female Startup Club.

Welcome back to the show - if you’re new here! Hi! I’m Doone, your host and hype girl in business. Every week we learn from 7, 8 and 9 figure female founders to understand their blueprint in business when it comes to money, marketing and mistakes. Women like Kaylin Marcotte the founder of Jiggy Puzzles. And if you’ve been around FSC since the very early days circa beginning of 2020 you might remember our first interview together. It’s number 10 if you want to go back and listen to Kaylin’s story at the very beginning of her journey only a few months into building Jiggy (and also the very beginning of my journey with building Female Startup Club!) Today we’re getting up to speed on what’s happened in her world since then and we deep dive into the power of her business model when it comes to collaborations with female artists, strategic partnerships with corporate clients and how she managed to get on Oprah’s list of favourite things.

And while I’ve got you here; if you’re a founder yourself or you’re just getting started with putting together your ideas to launch a business slash side hustle; something I’ve come across that’s a problem for every founder at every stage is capital. Every entrepreneur or future founder I speak to - myself included - struggles with the money piece. We all need more money. So we’ve put together a comprehensive list of every grants and accelerator thats live right now - and we’re keeping it updated weekly. There’s some really good ones that are closing in a weeks time you should jump onto. To access the doc for free go to femalestartupclub.com/grants to get your copy.

20 Oct 2022Fave Hits: 6 Quick Questions with Denise Woodard, Founder of Partake Foods (part 2)00:04:24

Joining me on today’s episode is Denise Woodard, Founder of Partake food, the gluten-free, vegan, and allergy-friendly snack brand working to eradicate childhood food insecurity.⁣

The lightbulb moment came as Denise’s 1-year-old daughter Vivian was diagnosed with several difficult food allergies, both limiting her diet and making the eating process a whole less fun. A nudge in the right direction from nanny Matha, and a bump-in with a stranger suggesting Denise enter a local pitch competition, and Denise ended her decade long career with coca-cola to pursue this idea full-time⁣.

Partake was founded, the US-based line of super yummy snacks that are now in more than 6,000 retail stores across the US including Target and Whole Foods, on their mission to make better-for-you, safe snacking enjoyable, inclusive and accessible⁣

In this episode, we chat about Denise’s purpose-driven approach to creating this company, how she got the likes of Rihanna and Jay Z investing in her business, and what the early grind looked like for her when she was just starting out⁣. Some of our fave takeaways centre around the importance of getting as close to people as possible, using the value of email and text marketing (an absolute must in 2022!) and being willing to start small.

Let’s get straight into it!

03 Nov 2022Fave Hits: 6 Quick Questions with Becca Millstein, Founder of Fishwife (Part 2)00:06:57

Today’s episode is brought to you by Klaviyo and I’m chatting with Becca Millstein, the Founder of Fishwife.

Fishwife is a new female-founded and led food company aiming to make ethically-sourced, premium, and delicious tinned seafood a staple in every cupboard. They work with small boat fisherfolks, sustainable aquaculture farms, and microcanneries to bring the vibrance of European conservas culture to the North American table.

I started following Becca’s journey with Fishwife when it first launched last year and have been drooling over it ever since as a big tinned fish eater myself - so I’m really excited to share this episode with you. We’re chatting about creating a distinguishable brand, what it costs and how to find the right folks, what it actually means to create a sustainable tinned fish company, how to start small and build within your means and building a brand that’s truly authentic and unique.

The best piece of advice that the founders were given, that led them to move so quickly, is that there is an ethos of the move fast and break things advice. Asking consumers, asking customers what they think about your products at every turn. Thats the piece of advice, 100 percent always do that. If youre not talking to your consumers, why? This is the most useful resources that you have available. Get customer feedback as soon as you can, by launching the brand. You’ve got to think of those hacks to get your brand and product in front of people to see if they would want to buy you. You just have to talk to so many people to do this. And you should. Because it will lead you in incredible directions and that will really build your business.

Now, let’s get straight into it!

13 Jul 2022Fave Hits: 6 Quick Questions with Lezlie Karls, Co - Founder of Mid-Day Squares (part 2)00:07:39

Today we are learning from Lezlie Karls, Co-Founder of Mid-Day Squares. What are Mid-Day Squares I hear you ask: They’re vegan protein bars that are also known as little pieces of heaven perfectly designed to stop your hunger or cravings in between meals. And they’re on a Mission To Take Over The World Of Healthy Snacks.

In this episode we’re talking about a solid 10/10 sampling program they launched with overcoming hurdles with manufacturing and operations, turning down an acquisition and some crazy drama they went through when Hershey’s came banging on their door with a cease and desist.

We cover so much in this incredible chat - she’s a real force to be reckoned with. Now a killing entrepreneur, Lezlie also bravely opens up about what it means to fail a business. How to fail, make the cut, and move on. We learn a lot from others’ successes, but there’s undoubtedly, even more, to learn about failures. They’re just a little bit trickier to talk about.

Lezlie had no trouble pinpointing the exact reason her beloved luxury fashion brand, Hector, failed. And in this conversation, she’s ready to pass on her lessons. Number one derives from becoming a consumer of your own product, as is now the case with Mid-Day Squares. Number two is all about having those around you being able to support your product. Clothing line Hector was within the 1% price point. We’re talking high-end fashion. This meant Lezlie’s community couldn’t afford to support her. When launching Mid-Day Squares it became easy for people to buy her product. Easy for people to support. This all helps create virality. Number three is all around not putting herself out there enough. She was always behind the scenes. What is more engaging than seeing a 23-year-old running around NYC in heels trying to get into stores? If that’s not inspiring, I don’t know what is. But she didn’t show that. She didn’t know how to. How to tell her story. How to put herself out there. How to market herself.

At one point you need to know how to shut something down. A good Founder knows how to throw in the towel. So, she did. After 3 years. Took some time off and realized what to do differently in the next venture. Learning about Mid-Day squares you see how all of these learnings have really come into play to her approach this time around, and just goes to show how valuable it is to learn from your mistakes. Let's get stuck in!

17 Aug 2022Norby Presents: The transition from a museum curator to a $8.3M VC-backed tech founder, with Norby’s co-founder Sam Safer Valentine (part 1)00:40:52

Today on the show we’re learning from Sam Safer Valentine, one of the co-founders of tech startup Norby.

You might have heard us talking about Norby recently in one of our ads or across social media, and that’s because they’re one of our sponsors this month which is just so damn exciting.

In this episode, you’ll hear about Sam’s non-traditional pathway to the world of tech, what she learned from her first time raising capital, and her advice to you!

I particularly loved diving into the financial side of things, with Norby having raised an impressive $8.5M to date. Fundraising, as expected, was a complete rollercoaster. It's a number of things coming together in a beautiful recipe of numbers and traction, the wider environment, buzz, timing, where your competitors are, and finding the right partners and investors. With all that, it's important to keep a clear mind on who you want to raise money from and how you want to run your business. Just because someone wants to write you a cheque doesn't mean that it's the right fit for you, there needs to be a mutual benefit and partnership there.

Sam's key take-away when it comes to raising? Don't give up. You just need to get to one yes. That journey and that road are going to look entirely different for everyone. Sometimes your hit with a hundred no's, but it just takes that one 'yes' to turn everything around. So, if you believe in it, and you're going to bet on yourself, keep going. It just takes a little practice.

And while we’re on the topic of Norby, today we launched our 1800 - hype girl hotline powered by Norby and it’s soooo fun. It’s something I’ve been dreaming about starting since the beginning of Female Startup Club to bring a little more sparkle to the week. Basically you sign up to receive texts from us and then every Monday you receive a dose of motivation and good vibes directly to your inbox. Whether you’re a student, working 9-5, or an entrepreneur it’s literally for anyone. And it’s free - so sign up by clicking the link in the show notes or our IG bio and pop your number in to get going. I’m so hyped for this!!

From Babba’s upbringing in a small tiny part of Sweden to big shiny startup life in New York City and the drive she got from her childhood and heritage to start this brand and have representation in the Latinax community for the next generation of founders. And Babba also shares some crazy stories like how she launched her brand from the nicu - and what can go terribly terribly wrong if you don’t have the right accountant. And trust me - that is not one to skip over it’s right at the very end of the show.

20 Jun 20236 quick questions with Sandy Ronalds, Founder of NAT'V Basics (Part 2)00:12:02

This is Sandy Ronalds for Female Startup Club

Hi everyone and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl! If you’ve just found us - we are SO grateful and happy to have you here. Every week we’re learning from some of the world’s most brilliant minds in business. Like the founder of NAT’V Basics, Sandy Ronalds. Sandy launched her biz in 2019 and in the last year alone sold 600,000 units from a few simple strategies. This story speaks to the power of spotting a clear gap in the market, proving out the concept, and going for it.

In this episode, Sandy shares her blueprint for making your business make business sense. In the dreaming phase, determine your why and know what your purpose is going to be for the brand through building brand pillars (these pillars have nothing to do with the end product but are about why you are joining us rather than another brand). In the building phase, consistently communicate the dreaming phase; it’s one thing knowing something yourself, and it’s another when it clearly comes across (pumping socials with the why’s and the purpose of the brand so you attract those who naturally align with your brand). In the day-to-day, Sandy still runs the nat’v basics IG intimately; she gets to know you and you get to know the real essence of the brand. It's key to remember here that your why doesn't have to be grandiose. It can be as simple as brightening someone's day, making them feel confident, or offering a sustainable solution.

Before we jump into today’s episode I want to quickly mention the Girl Code that we introduced a few episodes back! The gist is that it’s a very loose and casual deal where if you love what we’re doing over here and we bring you some value or a smile or a gem of insight, you take a tiny action every time you listen to one of our episodes. Whether that’s by leaving us a review, or sharing this episode on social media - basically anything that helps us reach more ears and keep growing. It’s a weird time right now and I’m in need of my hype girls. And to everyone who already does this - I appreciate you more than you know.

Let’s get into today’s episode, this is Sandy for Female Startup Club.

27 Oct 2022Fave Hits: 6 Quick Questions with Liv Koennecke, Founder of Maison Essentiele (Part 2)00:10:07

Today on the show we are learning from Olivia (or Liv as I know her!) Koennecke, Founder of luxury pyjamas brand Maison Essentiele. Maison Essentiele creates luxurious home essentials defined by soft, fluid silhouettes and tailoring. Every piece in the collection is responsibly crafted using high-quality natural fabrics like A-grade silk, European linen and organic cotton, allowing you to elevate your morning and evening routine with their chic pajama sets and silky nightdresses.

If you’re in the fashion industry this is such an amazing deep dive on things you should be considering when it comes to capital, how to go about getting a retailer like Net-A-Porter and Bloomingdales, and her thoughts behind gifting high-priced products to influencers.

I especially loved getting into the nitty gritty of the financials behind building a luxury brand. You wouldn’t be alone in thinking that starting a luxury fashion brand would require a hefty bit of capital to get you off the ground. I sure thought so, but Liv really turned this on its head for me. “Because I had no capital to work with, it has always made me have a really lean way of operating. I’ve always had to be really savvy with my money, and be really creative to have done what I’ve done. This is the biggest lesson that I want to pass on to other business owners. You actually, to begin with, don’t need a huge amount of money.” I just had to know the secret. When it comes to a logo, website, designing some packaging… There are so many great tools that you can use right now that are so much lower cost. Those are a lot more cost-efficient than agency packages. Outsourcing websites such as: Fiverr, Upwork, 99Designs, Writer Access, Total…In this way, you can pay by the hour or by the project, and save those pretty pennies for other areas of the biz. 15 Feb 2023She started her business with $3,000… now it’s doing $12 million ARR, with Trio Beauty’s Briana Olson (Part 1)00:34:28

This is Briana Olson for Female Startup Club

Hi and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here - your host and hype girl. If you’re new here - hi! I’m so happy you found us. Every week we dive into some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs - who happen to be women - to understand their blueprint; the money piece, the marketing piece and the mistakes we face along the way - to help founders and future founders feel a lot of inspired and a little less lonely.

Today we’re learning from Briana Olson, the founder of Trio Beauty. And boy oh boy this one is such a goodie!! During the pandemic, Briana had to pivot her business and developed a set of eyebrow stencils for her clients who couldn’t come in to get their regular microblading. The short story is that it totally took off and last year alone she was already doing 12 million in annual rev. But how - I hear you asking…. You’re about to find out as we dive into the long version! We also talk through working capital and how she’s funded the business without raising any money up until this point, and it’s something that you can do too.

We also get into the wellness side of things. The importance of having those moments in the day that break it up, having the chance to sit and reflect in silence. Really planning in that me-time. And just how difficult it is to truly incorporate that time away from our screens and away from technology. At the end of the day, you've got to have boundaries and be strong on those. Otherwise, you'll burn out.

And while I’ve got you here; if you’re a founder or you’re just getting started with putting together your ideas to launch a business; something I’ve come across that’s a problem for every founder at every stage is capital. Every entrepreneur or future founder I speak to - myself included - struggles with the money piece. We all need more money. So we’ve put together a comprehensive list of grants and accelerators that are live right now - and we’re keeping it updated weekly. To access the doc for free go to femalestartupclub.com/grants to get your copy.

26 May 20236 quick questions with Kristel de Groot, Founder of Your Super (Part 2)00:11:09

This is Kristel de Groot for Female Startup Club

Hi everyone and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl! If you’re a small business owner or an entrepreneur listening to this episode - you probably know how hard it can be to generate revenue - it's bloody tough! you might have just started and made a few sales… you might have made a few thousand dollars in sales or maybe even a few hundred thousand - hell maybe you’ve made multi 7 figures in sales! Now imagine scaling your business to hitting $200 million in revenue. Imagine what that would look like from a supply chain point of view, a product development pov, the investment point of view.

That’s what Kristel de Groote did - all while she was in her 20’s. I know. Wild. Today’s episode is a reminder that when you stick it out for the long run, when you have a real purpose and drive to change the world - magical things can happen. Kristel built her company, Your Super, alongside her partner Michael in their early 20s after Michael battled cancer. They built it to $200m in revenue and then sold it to the Healing Company in 2022 for an undisclosed amount. This story starts with humble beginnings and it ends with so many brilliant learnings, I hope you love it as much as I do!

I particularly love the part of this episode where we talk about the bottleneck in your business. Your flailing SEO strategy? The manufacturer that just won’t get back to you in time? Problems with shipping delays? Practical complications can cause a headache, but when we get to the crux of it it’s you as a founder who determines the real cap. You are the bottleneck of your business. Some of the greatest growth that you will see happen in your company comes at times when you work on your personal growth. And by personal growth, I don’t mean having all the answers. It’s knowing that not knowing is your superpower. It’s knowing that you don’t need to know step 100 when you’re at step 1. It’s wholeheartedly finding peace with yourself when you are: on a seat at the table that you have built yourself.

And before we jump into today’s episode I want to quickly mention the Girl Code that we introduced in our recent episodes! The general gist is that it’s a very loose and casual deal where if you love Female Startup Club and what we’re doing over here, you take a tiny action every time you listen to one of our episodes. Whether that’s by leaving us a review, or sharing this episode on social media - basically anything that helps us reach more ears and keep growing. It’s a weird time right now and I’m in need of my hype girls. And to everyone who already does this - I appreciate you more than you know.

23 Feb 20236 Quick Questions with Hannah Drury, founder of Peppermint Grove Australia and Moss St Fragrances (part 2)00:10:05

This is Hannah Drury for Female Startup Club.

Welcome back to the show - if you’re new here! Hi! I’m Doone, your host and hype girl in business. Every week we learn from 7,8 & 9-figure female founders to understand their blueprint in business when it comes to money, marketing, and mistakes. Women like Hannah Drury the founder of Peppermint Grove Australia and Moss St Fragrances. Hannah started this business in 2014 with an investment of $50,000 and now she’s selling more than 100,000 products every month. Today we’re digging into Hannah’s story of building this brand over the last 10 years; what she did when her 100% retail model in business went to zero overnight when the pandemic hit and how she diversified her business by becoming her own manufacturer and perfumer.

Hannah also dives into her wholesale strategy in the early days and how she managed to secure her brand in 110 retail stores within the first 6 months of starting her business - as a one-woman show! I love her approach to pounding the pavement and owning her backyard which saw the brand incrementally grow across retail stores at an incredible rate. And the best bit? It was totally free!

And while I’ve got you here; you might have noticed that I’ve been talking more and more about our newsletter. And that’s because we’ve been crafting it to be an absolute go-to resource that delivers you weekly insights, resources and extra content to keep you in the loop on all things women in business. 20 Dec 2022Best of ‘22 - 6 quick questions with Nadya Okamoto, Founder of August (Part 2)00:05:36

Today we’re learning from Nadya Okamoto, the founder of August, the lifestyle period brand that makes sustainable period care that actually works. Nadya is one of those women that is impossible not to be impressed by and excited about, she’s a Harvard grad, author, speaker, NGO founder, gen z marketing agency founder and now august as well as a Tiktoker that’s grown to 4.1 million followers. Crazy stuff.

The gem in this episode is when she steps through her thoughts on Tiktok. It’s pretty crazy!

We also touch on the importance of building a hyper-inclusive hyper-diverse community (all whilst maintaining a special sense of intimacy), growing slowly and thoughtfully and ensuring your cost of acquisition stays as low as possible.

I love Nadya’s key piece of mental health advice, centred all around taking time to really take care of yourself. You have to take care of yourself so you can really sustain your energy. Speaking of which, sleep is everything! And that’s something I can get behind. Being better about taking time to not think about your company is so important. Spending time with the people you love, that’s what will remind you: “this is what I feel so fulfilled doing.” Having that space to be re-ground yourself is so key because you’re able to come back to your work with a new refound trust in your instincts. That’s what you need in leadership. To trust your gut. You have to be making big decisions, but if you have trust in yourself and what your values are you feel much more empowered in making them.

06 Jul 2022$0-$100k in 4 weeks, with Naked Sundays Founder Samantha Brett (part 1)00:37:46

Today we’re learning from Samantha Brett who is the founder of Naked Sundays.

Naked Sundays is an Australian SPF brand aimed at inspiring the next generation to love and wear SPF every single day with fun, easy to use sunscreens.

This is a really inspiring story and we’re going to break down her secrets to success, what makes a brand pop and what you need to know about regulations when building a sunscreen brand.

I absolutely loved hearing about why Samantha decided to keep this venture a secret from the public for 9 months. She realized that sunscreen is complex, it’s made by chemists, and she's not going to be the one in the kitchen mixing this herself. Instead she's getting someone to make the best of the best, but will anyone really take it seriously with her name on the brand? So she didn't tell anyone about being a founder. This is the first time I've heard of something like this on the show, and I find it such an interesting approach. Samantha didn’t want people to think that I was just doing this for the sake of it.

Another part that made this journey a little more complicated than manufacturing your regular beauty products, is that there is a strong barrier to entry in the sunscreen space. It is classed as a medication in Australia and classed as a drug in America. Those are things to really think about before diving into the space. Even when it comes to advertising rules, you should put on a warning *reapply regularly*, on social media, podcasts, influencers, the whole mix. You can’t give a testimonial. It's pretty crazy stuff.

And while I’ve got you here! One quick thing. I’m giving away copies of my book over the next 2 weeks. All you need to do is make a cute video on Tiktok about the Female Startup Club podcast; send it to me by email to hello@femalestartupclub.com and your copy will be on the way.

Let’s get straight into this episode! This is Samantha for Female Startup Club

**Avoid prolonged sun exposure, make sure you re-apply frequently in accordance with directions. Remember, sunscreen is only one component of sun protection so always wear a hat, protective clothing and eyewear when you’re in the sun.

19 Sep 2022From her mum’s living room to global success story, SoL Cups Founder Rebecca Veksler shares her journey from chronic disease to entrepreneurship (Part 1)00:42:21

Today we’re chatting to Rebecca Veksler, the founder of SoL Cups! After going through a chronic health issue, Rebecca started this reusable cups business alongside her mum while she was back living with her during rehabilitation and since then it’s become one of the top 4 reusable cup companies globally.

We talk through her journey of building this business from the ground up but losing everything when the pandemic hit, the lessons she wishes she knew when she was starting out and how she approached global expansion.

When it comes to global expansion, there are two main points. Firstly, don’t expand globally if you’re not profitable and highly successful in the country where you started. Secondly, you really have to be there. Launching in another country is no different than launching in the country where you’re from. The reason it works is that you’re present, you’re available. Rebecca owes her success to the luxury she had to fly and to actually be there, boots on the ground. That first interaction. Showing face. It's absolutely key to dive into the country, the culture, the dynamic of the business relations, and really understand that interaction. Have the respect and time to join it. And if you physically can’t do it, to make sure to hire someone who is perfectly aligned with your mission and ready to communicate all those learnings to your partners directly.

And remember to join our waitlist at femalestartupclub.com/waitlist ahead of our upcoming announcement! I’m excited to tell you more in the coming weeks!

21 Jul 2022Fave Hits: 6 Quick Questions with Margaret Wishingrad, Founder of Three Wishes Cereals (part 2)00:05:41

Today I’m joined by Margaret Wishingrad, Founder of Three Wishes Cereal.

In the 12 months since launching, Margaret and her husband slash business partner Ian have built a multi-million dollar business through thoughtful retail expansion, unique guerrilla marketing moments, and a tasty better-for-you product that people want to keep buying. We’re going through the blueprint to launch and why it’s important to keep your customers' behavior front of mind.

Three Wishes is a healthy cereal that tastes like childhood indulgence, led by the cereal aisle’s first female founder, Margaret Wishingrad. While other cereals on the shelf force customers to choose between flavor and nutrition, there’s no compromise with Three Wishes. It’s high protein, low sugar, gluten and grain-free, and made from ingredients like chickpeas, pea protein, and tapioca.

In this episode, we discuss Three Wishes' extremely successful launch strategy, how to go about the financials after making sure you have a great minimum viable product, and making sure to get your product on Amazon.

I absolutely loved chatting to someone who's such an innovator in a traditional space. Our top five learnings (it was hard to narrow it down!) from chatting with Margaret are the following:

  • There is no ‘too early', once you have a product that you’re comfortable with and ready to get into retail you should start talking to those buyers
  • When something isn't working, instead of freaking out and not knowing what do, take a step back, pivot quick, change and keep going
  • Having the flexibility and understanding of how to quickly turn things around and be resourceful is an absolute saving grace
  • A total of 45% of searches begin on Amazon, it’s a search engine in its own right and for that reason a very important channel to focus on.
  • If you're scared to get started, yank the band-aid, just go for it - whatever is holding you back, look it in the eye, just go for it

04 Jul 20235 things I’m doing right now for my mental health ✨00:31:00

This is Doone for Female Startup Club

Hi everyone and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl! If you’ve just found us - welcome welcome welcome. Thank you for tuning into my mini solo episode this week, where we chat all about the things I’m doing right now for my mental health.

Before we jump into this - I’d love for you to be involved in my new solo episodes. All you need to do is send through a voicenote in the DMS either to female startup club on IG (or my personal account). It can be a specific question you have about business or life or a personal question, something you want to know or learn more about. We’re keeping it broad so we can mix it up! It’s part of a new content series where we will play your recording (so whatever you send in the recording will play on the show) and chat through that topic or question. And I’m so excited for this! See you in the DMs.

Let’s get into the episode. Chatting to Wonderwind co-founder Daniella Pierson on the show at the end of last year reminded me just how much of a shared experience this all really is. And why it’s important to talk about it so we feel less alone. If you didn’t hear her episode, def go back and listen to it - Wondermind is a mental fitness startup that Daniella launched with her co-founders Selena Gomez and Mandy Teefey after a powerful conversation around their mental health struggles. And my conversation with her was really powerful. Daniella shared deeply about having ADHD, OCD, and Depression, and her vulnerability really lit a spark in me.

When you read through Wondermind content, it points out that self-care refers to the things we turn to when we’re in desperate need of a mental health pick-me-up. The thing is, relying on it to put out fires after they’ve already started is not the best way to stay on top of life’s stresses. Self-care can and should be a tool you use to set yourself up for success every single day, not just an emergency switch you pull during crisis mode. And because I’ve been going through the motions of getting my mental health in a place of priority, this might be just the right time to talk about the things that I’m doing for my mental health in the hopes that if you’re experiencing any of these feelings, it helps you too.

Today I’m sharing 5 of the things that I’m doing right now to give my mind that little pick-me-up. And remember, maybe you’re in a really great place right now - and that’s a great place to be making sure you’re building habits that support your mental health ongoing. There’s no time like the present when it comes to getting up close and personal with mental health tools. You’ll thank yourself later.

Ok, now let’s jump into today’s episode!

29 Oct 2022Fave Hits: 6 Quick Questions with Amy Liu, Founder of Tower 28 (Part 2)00:14:19

17 Jun 20227 women pioneers changing the future of feminine health, and what we can learn from them00:13:53

Hi everyone! Doone here - your host and hype girl. Thanks for tuning in to my solo episode this week. I’m recording this from my little hotel room in sunny New York city and I’m feeling so grateful to be in this beautiful city. Today, I want to dive into a topic that I know is going to be relevant for every single one of you listening in. And that’s the topic of female health. Women have been underserved by the healthcare industry for a really damn long time. But now finally, with more women in STEM, and more female entrepreneurial disrupters, the future of femtech is looking bright.

Firstly, we learn from Dr. Amy Divaraniya, the founder of Oova, an incredibly innovative women’s health company. Amy has more than 10 years of experience as a data scientist and has both led and published original research in the areas of personal genomics and biomarker discovery.

Next, I introduce Nadya Okamoto from August. Or you might know her better as the “period girl”. August is the lifestyle period brand that makes sustainable period care that actually works. And Nadya is one of those women that is impossible not to be impressed by and excited about. She’s a Harvard grad, author, speaker, NGO founder, gen z marketing agency founder and now august as well as a TikToker that’s grown to 2.4 million followers.

Thirdly, I dive into the story of Bethany Edwards and her creation Lia, the world’s first flushable pregnancy test. Lia is an earth-friendly healthcare company on a mission to revolutionize reproductive health through the development of innovative products. The company's first product, which came to market just last year, is the FDA cleared Lia pregnancy test.

Next I’m introducing you to Alexandra Fine, a real favourite from the show, and one of the women behind Dame. Dame is leading a sexual wellness revolution as a women-powered resource for game-changing products for pleasure and supportive content.

Our fifth story is that of Krystal Duhaney the Founder of Milky Mama. After having her second child and returning to work, Krystal struggled with her milk supply and realized that there were very few resources for breastfeeding mothers in the same predicament. So, in November of 2015, Milky Mama was born. Today, Milky Mama is dedicated to educating, supporting and empowering parents to have the best breastfeeding journey possible.

I next introduce you to another woman modernizing sustainable period care, Cherie Hoeger with Saalt. In 2018, Saalt launched its flagship product—the Saalt period cup—with the vision of making cleaner, more sustainable period care accessible to everyone.

Last but not least, I want to shine a light on Sally Mueller and her company Womaness. Womaness is a collection of modern, innovative menopause products developed for women, by women that offer solutions from head to toe, and everything in between.

These are all stories that have really stuck with me in the last year, an incredible little bank of inspiration, and if I can pass that feeling onto even just one of you today that’s a mission very much accomplished. Let’s get straight to it! This is me, for Female Startup Club.

16 Jul 2022Fave hits: The blueprint to building a $100 million brand, with Hero Founder Ju Rhyu (part 1)00:28:02

Joining me on the show today is Ju Rhyu, Founder of Hero Cosmetics.

Hero makes super-powered skincare products to put you back in control of your skin and to help restore your confidence and they’re best known for their Mighty Patch acne patches. And here’s a super fun fact, they sell a box every 15 seconds with over 2 million boxes sold in over 8,500 retail doors.

That’s pretty Mighty I have to say, right? But what’s even crazier is that I just did a quick google of her last week when I was making a TikTok biz breakdown of the Hero journey and now she boasts of selling a product every 3 seconds. THREE Seconds. Can you imagine? In 2021 last year she did more than 100 million dollars in annual rev, in just 5 years of starting her biz. If that’s not wildly inspiring I don’t know what is.

I discussed all sorts of things with Ju—from how she launched her brand exclusively through Amazon to how she found a manufacturer in South Korea and how she goes about driving crazy growth. But there’s one key takeaway in particular that I want to focus on today: Bootstrapping puts focus on profitability.

Together with her two co-founders, each partner put personal capital into a dedicated bank account to get the business going. Many startup entrepreneurs find that having limited capital can prove to be a blessing in disguise. Because having a tight budget forces you to think twice about every move and be resourceful and creative. Further down the line, showing an investor that you’ve gone through this process and made it to the other side can be seen as a big plus for credibility and ultimately set you a higher valuation for the business.

Bootstrapping was good because it forced them to really focus on being profitable from the very beginning. They couldn’t pay themselves fancy salaries or spend too much on PR firms and those kinds of things. So it was ‘boots to the ground, approach’ which means they were always really resourceful. Which in turn makes them more attractive as a business to investors.

And I think this is such a key insight. We can get caught up in these stories and articles we read in the media celebrating founders who are going out raising millions of dollars before even launching a product and think that’s what we should be doing, but having to prove out your concept first, get traction and actually build a profitable business will put you in a much better position to raise down the track if you need to. Focus on bootstrapping your business in the beginning until you’ve proven traction and figured out the foundations. You might then find you don’t need to raise.

In this episode, we’re covering why they decided to launch the brand exclusively through amazon, how she went about finding her manufacturer and what they do today to drive crazy growth.

28 Jul 2022Fave Hits: 6 Quick Questions with Melanie Travis, Founder of Andie Swim (part 2)00:06:32

Joining me on the show today is Melanie Travis, Founder of swimwear label Andie.

Andie is a swimwear company that makes the swimsuit shopping experience for women incredible through a tailored fit finder, a desirable returns policy, and relatable content.

Since their launch back in 2016 Andie has curated a well-rounded swimwear collection for every moment of your life, racking up over 100 styles with multiple texture and coverage options. The whole idea is that these pieces last longer than just one season, and you can bring them back out of your wardrobe time and time again. I love how inclusivity has been part of Andie's DNA since the get-go, with sizes ranging from XS to (recently) 5XL.

In this episode, we’re talking about how Mel launched a swimwear label in a competitive market, the process of validating her idea through a crowdfunding campaign, how an equity deal with her manufacturer enabled her to scale up in a really big way, and the steps the company took to grow their Instagram from 12k to almost 100k in just 2 years.

Melanie dives into her different areas of focus at different stages of the business, something super interesting to get an insight into. Before launch, three workstreams were taking the majority of her time. Manufacturing, web design, and crowdfunding. She ended up with about 100K to do all of this. All that went to creating swimsuits and to a PR agency, part of the next step of the process. After having the swimsuits in hand, she decided very early on that one of the first places to invest would be PR. This is how you legitimize your business and get people to start talking about it in a serious way. After riding this PR way, Andie started investing in Facebook and Instagram advertising, leading to one of her biggest learnings since starting the business. This key bit of advice: learn how to work these social ads yourself. Don't just rely on outsourcing that, you are definitely going to need it at some point and the skills will come in very handy.

There are lots more pointers where that came from, so let's get straight into it.

16 Jan 2023Best of '22 - How to build a 7-figure clean fragrance brand with founder Rosie Jane Johnston (part 1)00:43:23

Today we’re learning from Rosie Jane Johnston, the founder of By Rosie Jane.

By Rosie Jane was founded in 2010 by celebrity makeup artist Rosie Jane Johnston, an Aussie who has made her home in LA. Each fragrance, formulated by Rosie herself, is free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates and phosphates and housed in recycled and recyclable packaging. Her perfumes and body care products are refreshingly simple and ideal for daily wear using the highest quality fragrance oils. We cover her journey to building this brand into a 7 figure company stocked in the likes of Sephora and Thirteen Lune, and the campaign that’s driving her customer acquisition right now.

The thing that really struck me in this episode is Rosie's relentless pursuit in business and getting what she wants, to get By Rosie Jane to where it is today. She really shows us how a no now doesn’t mean a no forever, and it’s all about being open for when that time comes for the no to turn into a yes. That’s where your courage and conviction are. If you are not doing something you truly believe in, you truly love, you’re not going to stay the course. Whatever that is for you, has to be your driving force. There’s something within your entrepreneurial spirit. That’s just in you. It takes 10 years to reach overnight success. And in that time you need to have that persistence and true conviction in what you’re doing. When we look at legacy brands, there are a few key things key they are getting really right. They have these incredible “whys”. They have a lot of struggles in the beginning. They’ve had to change and move with the time and have great failures and still come back, which is so important to have in the entrepreneurial world.

If you love something in this episode please do consider sharing it on Instagram stories and tagging us or leaving us a review to help other ears find us. I’m so grateful for each and every one of you who does this.

11 Nov 2022Introducing MAJIC ✨00:20:21

Hi everyone! Doone here - your host and hype girl. Thank you for tuning in to my solo episode this week.

Today’s episode specifically is a super super exciting one for me, because I’m going to be sharing with you what we’ve been working hard on behind the scenes for - what feels like forever - but has actually just been the last couple of months here at Female Startup Club.

Ok so…. the building blocks for what I’m about to share with you have been around since the very early days of Female Startup Club. This was always right in the middle of that big vision of what the future would hold for the podcast. The ultimate goal.. If you’re familiar with the podcast (and me!) you've probably heard of Hype Club which we launched last year into beta. Hype Club is our private network full of amazing women who are launching and building the next wave of DTC brands. We meet weekly on intimate zoom calls to chat about everything that’s going on behind the scenes; the good stuff, the bad stuff and the really fucking bad stuff. And I’m not kidding you when I say this is where the magic happens. We show up to support each other, brainstorm ideas, help connect people to the people they need to be connected to and so much more. I am so damn proud of the community we’re building in there and the women who are part of it. And so now with the foundation that we have Hype Club is ready to go through an evolution. We’re ready for new beginnings.

What’s that thing about letting go of the past to allow new things to flourish? Yes, that. We have outgrown our community 1.0, and are ready to embrace the next stage of Female Startup Club with arms wide open. A stage that’s all about nurturing that incredibly special community that we’ve already created, building an inclusive space for anyone that could do with a bit of sparkle in their lives, and spreading the impact of Female Startup Club far beyond what we previously thought possible. Today I wanna introduce you to MAJIC. And that’s majic with a J.

I’m excited to spill all in this episode, let’s get straight into it!

07 Feb 20236 quick questions with Sophie Baron, Founder of Mamamade (Part 2)00:11:53

This is Sophie Baron for Female Startup Club.

Hello and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here - your host and hype girl. If you’re new to the show - every week we interview some of the world’s most successful founders and entrepreneurs - who happen to be women. Like Sophie Baron, the founder of Mamamade. But this episode’s a little different - because it’s actually our follow up episode! Sophie was first on Female Startup Club back in 2020 to share her launch story with us and I highly recommend going back to check out that episode and hear the early stages of her story. In today’s episode we’re talking through how she’s built the business since then as well as a deep dive into equity crowdfunding: what it means, how it can help you and the pros and cons. Sophie shares the difference between her first equity crowdfunding campaign that was a mega success, and the second which wasn’t.

And while I’ve got you here; if you’re a founder of you’re just getting started on putting together your ideas to launch a business; something I’ve come across that’s a problem for every founder at every stage is capital. Every entrepreneur or future founder I speak to - myself included - struggles with the money piece. We all need more money. So we’ve put together a comprehensive list of grants and accelerators that are live right now - and we’ll be keeping it updated weekly. 15 Apr 20236 quick questions with Christina Kao, Founder of Le Mini Macaron (Part 2)00:18:32

This is Christina Kao for Female Startup Club.

Hi hello!!! It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl popping into your ears on a beautiful day from Sydney Australia. If you’re new to the show - welcome - every week I’m chatting with some of the world’s most successful female founders and entrepreneurs to understand how they’ve built their businesses to 7 figures in annual recurring revenue and above; what’s working now and what’s not working. We also love to talk about the money piece and we LOVE to dig into the challenges and find the insights that come from going through those hard times.

Today on the podcast, we’re learning from Christina Kao. Christina is the co-founder of Le Mini Macaron. A privately-funded, indie beauty brand that launched in 2015 with a focus on making gel manicures easy, affordable, and fun to DIY at home. The nail brand has since launched in over 30 markets, including retailers like Sephora, ULTA, Target, and Asos along with about a million other ones. This episode was so much fun and we hit on so many gems when it comes to setting yourself up for success with your supply chain, your retail partners - specifically how to approach your marketing when you launch into something like Target - and product development through the lens of social media.

I loved hearing about what Christina would do differently if she were to start the brand today: she would really focus on content. There’s two ways you can do it. As a founder, to be the face of the brand makes a huge difference. Secondly, if you have the right content then people will start engaging with it, use other creators and influencers to do that - but how you brief them is important - what works for you product - what’s the hook? You have to figure out what is that visual for your brand and your product that is unique and recognisable. Social is your free platform. How are you going to be different and better than the competitors?

And while I’ve got you here I’ve also updated the grant doc with a bunch of new grants all over the world that are ready to be applied for this month and you can download it by going to femalestartupclub.com/grants.

02 Sep 20226 Quick Questions with Ali Clarke, Founder of Bondi Blades (part 2)00:05:36

Welcome back to the Female Startup Club podcast! It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl. Today we’re learning from Ali Clarke, the woman behind Bondi Blades - Australia’s first at home derma razor company.

Bondi Blades launched as a pandemic baby with just a few hundred bucks and quickly turned into more than just a side hustle. Last year she did 1 million in revenue and is now stocked in more than 1000 stores in Australia alone! This episode is SO good because she breaks down her exact blueprint to getting her business off the ground and what she recommends every new founder do TODAY. The gem in this ep is where she breaks down her experience with cosmoprof trade show; what it cost her and the impact.

Some of her advice regarding cosmoprof centers around the idea that you should be well prepared when you decide to invest in a trade show of this kind and size. But that when that preparation is taken seriously, it also seriously pays off. Have a bit of data around you, shout loudly about anything that gives you credibility, and really show those retailers that there is an appetite for your product.

Today’s episode is powered by the lovely folks at DYMO which Ali uses every single day to help her business grow. They’ve been helping small biz owners just like Ali for over 60 years.

And while I’ve got you here -we have got something cooking and the time is fast approaching for us to release it!!! and I’m just so excited because it’s relevant to every single person listening to the show. Whether you own a business or not! If you head over to femalestartupclub.com/waitlist and pop your name there - you’ll be the first to know about it when we make the announcement. I would love for you to be part of it!

20 Sep 20236 quick questions with Alexandra Fine, Founder of Dame Products (Part 2)00:10:46

Hi and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here your host and hype girl. If you’re new here - we love to understand the insights and playbook behind the brands we love and buy - and if you’re an OG listener. Well, LOVE you. You know what this is all about. Today’s episode is a follow up to our original episode with Rachael from 2021. I love doing episodes like this because so much has happened in between then and now. Rachael’s since merged with another skincare company, she’s launched TBH skincare into hundreds of Priceline stores around Australia and she’s just got so many good insights when it comes to her approach to marketing. She’s a big believer in grassroots, guerrilla style marketing - which I just absolutely love - it’s so my vibe - and there’s so much gold packed in here. It’s a great episode! There’s a few crazy stories sprinkled in here.

If you love it! Shout about it! Tell a friend. Honour the girl code. Oh! And I’m thinking about our next meetup for November and I’m trying to decide if we do Sydney or Melbourne. Sooo let us know in the DMs where we should host our Aussie catch up next month. I would love to meet you IRL

04 Nov 2022Fave Hits: 3 things retailers like Ultra & Sephora are looking for, with Everyday Humans Charlotte Chen Pienaar (Part 1)00:45:19

Today we’re learning from Charlotte Chen Pienaar, the founder behind one of the coolest bootstrapped companies around right now.

Everyday Humans make next-generation sunscreens that are comfortable, conscious and designed for all. We’re talking about how she approaches money and the old school tips to funding a CPG brand, why retailers like Ulta and Sephora came knocking on her door and the pros and cons to creating a truly sustainable brand.

When it comes to the retail landscape, there are the key aspects that can make you stand out in pitching to those big names. Firstly, the branding should be inclusive. They champion a diverse customer range. Originally aimed at ages 25-35, they’ve found customers all the way down to 16 and up to 65. A lot can be said for finding a brand language that can be as inclusive as that. Secondly, diversity. Everyday Humans champions itself on being a never-ordinary SPF brand. They’re against average SPF. No sun, no yellow branding. They really are different. Basically, differentiation matters. To buyers, to the competition, and to your success. Finally, make sure there’s a focus on sustainability. Young people are super concerned about the environment, and about where they spend their money. Retailers really like that. Combined, this means this is something you definitely want to get on board with.

Now, let’s get straight into it!

14 Jul 2022Fave hits: Being an icon, building an empire, staying organic with Aussie's favorite influencer Flex Mami (part 1)00:49:38

I’m so proud to be bringing you this episode. It’s with a friend of mine, who you probably have seen on the likes of Instagram doing her super cool things. Lil is Australia’s favorite woman. Truly. How Lil Ahenkan (aka Flex Mami) built her empire, Flex Factory, through deep conversations talking about sex, life, and everything in between.

It’s a big call, I know, but she’s definitely one of mine and I know a lotta folks who agree with me. My bet is she’s about to be one of yours. She’s a dj, podcaster, best-selling author, diy guru, hilarious Instagrammer as well as an entrepreneur. And a damn good one, at that. So in this episode let us take you behind the scenes into her story, but first - and if you haven’t been blessed with her content on Instagram - just pop on over. Have a quick peek. Have a lol. Do some critical thinking and then come on back to listen to how she’s built her colourful world and business, Flex Factory.

For Lil it's nice to be working on the business every day, chipping away at it, working intentionally, because it does make the biggest difference. I love Lil's approach to the financial part of the puzzle. She's always - are the numbers reflecting our efforts? Are the numbers reflecting our decisions? If not, they're not doing it properly. Initially, she thought this was a really stringent and restrictive way to run the business. How can you be your full creative self if you have to think about numbers? But now, she loves seeing really clear boundaries and restrictions. Within that perimeter, you can make the best creative decisions. Knowing what you have, what you don’t have, what you need, what you don’t need.

Let's get straight into it.

27 Jul 2022Fave Hits: Growing sales 100% year on year (on year) to build a $20M brand, with Andie Swim founder Melanie Travis (part 1)00:42:00

10 Jul 20226 Quick Questions with Nicole Centeno, founder of Splendid Spoon (part 2)00:08:12

Today on the show we’re learning from Nicole Centeno, the founder of Splendid Spoon.

The spark for Splendid Spoon came to Nicole in 2012. Working at Condé Nast and pregnant with her first son Grover, she came to realize how unattainable it was to achieve a healthy lifestyle alongside a demanding career and the day-to-day realities of being a working parent. What she wanted was to find a way to make nutritious, and, importantly, delicious plant-based food accessible to everyday Americans.

While working full time, Nicole began attending culinary school, dabbling in catering (by delivering soups on her lunch break that she’d cooked earlier that morning!), hosting pop-ups, and teaching cooking/nutrition courses at Columbia University. These experiences — coupled with her studies in diet therapies, a penchant for entrepreneurship, and a conviction that there must be a better way to eat well — convinced Nicole to take the leap and leave her corporate career to pursue food full-time.

What I love about this story, is that Nicole talks about having none of the business language, but all of the instincts when she was first starting out. She knew how to ask for things, she knew where she needed to get to but just didn’t have the language or the model to explain these things. This is so often the case for first-time founders. We know where we're going, and we have a plan, but we don’t speak the business jargon. In the end, the magic lay in being very passionate about what she believed in. That was the most powerful part of it. People had the conviction that she would keep trying. Had that tenacity, She had a story. With the key pieces to convince someone that she could make this bigger, she could get stuck in.

We’re covering her journey of side-hustle to 8-figure biz, the challenges that the food industry faces, and how to do a friends and family round. So much good stuff in here I know you’re going to love it!

And remember that if you want a signed copy of my book, this week and next I’m sending them out to anyone who creates a TikTok video about Female Startup Club. All you need to do is post the video and slide into my inbox at hello@femalestartupclub.com.

Have the best day and enjoy the episode, this is Nicole for Female Startup Club

18 Jan 2023Best of ‘22 - How to sell 10,000 units in your first month, with Agua Bonita’s co-founder Kayla Castañeda (Part 1)00:41:02

Today on the show we’re learning from Kayla, the founder of Agua Bonita.

Agua Bonita is a Latina-owned beverage company making the first better-for-you aguas frescas on the market. A modern take on a traditional Mexican fruit drink, their aguas frescas come in ready-to-drink 12oz cans, made with real fruit, low sugar, and fun flavors (like mango habanero). And this story is a wild one. I actually came across a post of Kayla’s on LinkedIn sharing a pretty crappy story for any small business owner to go through. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of takeaways in this episode because she’s just so insightful.

We talk through those initial 6 months of building the brand. Agua Bonita launched conceptually in July 2020, but those first months were really stealth mode. You conceptualize your brand, identify your values, and what makes you different from the whole market. A lot of thinking through that for the first 6 months. What do we want to do that’s different, how can we do this sustainably, and how do we communicate that?

And we can confidently say this initial stage was a success, with 10,000 units flying out the door in the first month. Kayla talks us through how exactly this came about, this complete wildfire response. Firstly, the people were ready for Agua Bonita. This product was just completely absent from the market, and people wanted it. On top of that, Agua Bonita was ready for the people: extensive research into where they can find their consumers, and then showing up in their life throughout the day. Kayla also shared some pretty key know-how around a concept called free-fill when it comes to giveaways in retail. Heard of it? Check out the full chat for the low-down.

You should stick around to the end of the episode, where Kayla shares the number one piece of advice she's ever received, and some of her own advice. When it comes to the first, everything takes way longer than you expect it to. Even when you allot a lot of extra time, add even more time onto that timeline. In business, time really does equal money. So you'll need money to make sure those things work out in your favor. When it comes to Kayla's own piece of advice, she's a strong advocate for leaning into your community. You will find so many other founders and resources, so many people that really want to help you. When you’re building a brand, that’s all your really trying to do as a brand. Lean into the community, there are people that want to help.

If you love this episode and get something out of it please do share it on your Instagram stories with us @femalestartupclub. You can also find me in the DMs directly @dooneroisin where I love to chat and hear about what you’re working on. Let's get into it.

02 Nov 2022Fave Hits: Making tinned fish sexy, here’s how Becca Millstein is disrupting the industry with Fishwife (Part 1)00:40:20

16 Aug 20226 quick questions with Miki Agrawal Founder of Tushy (part 2)00:10:58

Today on the show we have Miki Agrawal, the serial founder behind some of the coolest companies you’ll definitely know; the first being WILD a gluten-free pizza restaurant concept she launched 18 years ago, Thinx, the period underwear company that totally disrupted how we think about our period care and Tushy, the modern day bidet.

This episode was so damn cool, and I know you’re going to get so much out of this. Miki is the queen of disruptive marketing, we talk through how she takes a product and applies her framework to create intrigue and mystery which then creates buzz and more eyeballs. We also talk about what she did to raise millions of dollars and her advice for founders. And if you hang around to the end, we were lucky enough to meet her beautiful dad! Go check out the YouTube video on our channel.

Miki is an absolute marketing genius, and her magic lies in pulling that intrigue and taboo element out of the products she is selling. Using that intrigue in a way that supports the clickbait or the interest of the conversation. You can really take anything and make it intriguing based on what you attach it to. It all comes back to creativity. Everyone is creative, we just don't necessarily spend the time taking the noise out of our brains to have time to think. People are so busy reacting to the world around them that they don't give themselves the space to be creative. Creativity requires spaciousness, time, and presence.

Tuning into your creativity goes hand-in-hand with the changes in the narrative around things not being presented so perfect and crisp anymore. We're leaning more into sincerity and authenticity in 2022. This links back to the big rise in UGC over traditional commercials, something important to keep in mind for marketing moving into the future. Authentic recommendations and user-generated content perform so much better, commercials have started to feel phony. Do things DIY, and even if it's not perfect, that's the whole point. We are built for imperfection, that's the beauty of being human.

I’m so grateful that you’re tuning in today and I hope you love this episode as much as I did recording it.

22 Nov 20226 quick questions with Lulu Ge, Founder of Elix (Part 2)00:10:36

Welcome back to the show, it’s Doone here - your host and hype girl. This episode came from a really beautiful beginning that I want to tell you about. And you might know what I’m talking about if you follow me on Instagram. So a few months ago I posted out of desperation for help - about this crazy messed up period that I had which gave me hours of severe back pain and vomitting and everything else. Absolute period from hell. But the beautiful thing that came out of this experience is that I had hundreds of people reach out to me with their stories and advice and recommendations and funnily enough a guy I know, Justin Silver, popped into my DMS recommending that I meet the founder of Elix, Lulu Ge.

Now Elix is is the first digital platform to use modern technology to personalize Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), by combining time-tested knowledge, medicinal botanicals, and clinical research to empower self-healing. It’s ben built on the principle that menstrual cycles are a vital sign for our overall health, and Elix formulates pure and potent liquid herbal extracts clinically proven to treat hormonal imbalances that are the root cause of painful and life-disrupting symptoms. Beyond herbal treatments, Elix is committed to breaking women’s health taboos and bridging the gap in healthcare knowledge through community events and their content vertical The Wisdom.

So this conversation comes from a pretty special place for me as someone suffering in this space - and I learned a lot from Lulu about how she’s built her business. We talk about:

  • Using an accelerator as a launchpad
  • Building a product with word of mouth inherently built in like wild fire
  • Creating a business rooted in heritage and culture and using that as your core content marketing strategy
  • And Lulu’s advice for founders

If you ever want to chat period stuff feel free to slide into my dms on Instagram, I am deep in the journey right now and I’ve shared all the insights that I received as a big juicy highlight.

02 Aug 20226 Quick Questions with Lucy Goff, Founder of LYMA (part 2)00:06:37

Today on the show we’re learning from Lucy Goff, the founder of LYMA. If you haven’t heard of LYMA before, it was started in 2018 as a powerful supplement specifically created to change people's lives by re-engineering nature to create products that actually live up to the promise and improve your health. LYMA fuses together wellness and technology, to lead the new WellTech category.

Lucy started this business after suffering serious health issues and meeting a scientist by chance who helped changed the course of her life. We talk through what they’ve been able to create, how she garnered a 5,000-person waitlist before launch, creating a product so good that it’s organically endorsed by celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Hailey Bieber, and what approach they take to marketing high-ticket items.

When it comes to the marketing piece, Lucy really opened my eyes to something I hadn't thought of before. Marketing historically was relatively simple. Now it’s much more complicated. Awareness is the key to having success long-term. If no one knows about your brand, no one knows about your product. It’s a really crowded space because it all goes through the same social channels to the same audience. That’s why you need to do something different. Understanding what doesn’t work and making those mistakes helps you understand what will work ultimately.

One definitive point of difference is to be the first brand to disrupt and move the supplement category along, as LYMA is. A story such as this one is something that works brilliantly for scoring those first PR pieces. Lucy made sure to make LYMA an all-around PR-focused product ahead of the launch. Knowing that a point of difference would naturally lead to interest, they kept their pre-launch effort pretty innocuous and vague to really hone in on that FOMO effect. It is this strategy that guaranteed a mighty 5000 people waitlist before launch and their first 1000 customers.

If you get something out of this episode and you love it just as much as I do, please do share it to your IG stories and tag us! It makes me so happy when you do that.

27 Jun 2022Where founders go wrong, Tips for bootstrapped small business owners & When to hire an agency with Tash Todd Williams, Word Of Mouth Collective (part1)00:45:20

Today we’re mixing things up and learning from Tash Todd Williams, founder of digital marketing agency Word of Mouth Collective.

I’ve known Tash for circa 10 years now and have had the absolute pleasure of watching her journey from launching a fashion publication that she exited before she was 24, to today running a successful digital agency with a special love for female founders and entrepreneurs. Today she’s coming on to share part of that journey and a bunch of interesting tips and advice for early-stage bootstrapped founders including where she sees a lot of small businesses go wrong, the challenges that founders have in today’s landscape post iOS apple updates when it comes paid marketing and when a small business owner should actually be looking to engage an agency.

One thing we often hear on the podcast is that founders regret having spent on an agency too early on in their journey. In this episode, we explore the best time for bootstrapped founders to actually make this move and start working with an agency. At which stage in the journey it would pay off. And this is all about looking at tipping points of scale. There’s one scenario where you’ve just raised and you have a lot of capital so that’s totally separate. When you have strong KPIs to reach and the capital to get there, it makes a lot of sense to hire an agency. It's not these founders, but rather the bootstrapped founders we often hear about regretting investing in an agency early on. At this point, it becomes more about which stage of business you will be ready. If you’re running lean and doing this alone, you can come to a tipping point where you do not have the time and resources to upskill yourself and you have too many moving parts in the business. This would be the point to consider outsourcing to an agency. As Tash says, they're not in the business to bankrupt anybody. Audit yourself, audit where the business is at, and based on that draw conclusions if this actually makes sense for you.

So many gems in here, I know you’re going to love her!

And btw, are we friends on TikTok? I’m having so much fun on that platform, Id love to connect and see what you’re creating on there too. Find me at @dooneroisin in all the places.

08 Jul 2022How to build a 9-figure empire00:11:36

Hi everyone! Doone here - your host and hype girl. Thank you for tuning in to my solo episode this week.

Today is all about diving into the learnings of some of the highest rev-generating business founders that we’ve had on the show, those producing around the 9-figure mark. For those counting numbers in their heads right now, that’s revenue of 100 mil and above. Don’t worry, it took me a quick google search myself. This is an impressive and particularly interesting milestone for a business because of many reasons. It’s often said that in order to be considered as a potential investment by VCs, you should tell a convincing story which could catapult your startup to forecasts in the $100M annual rev mark. In other words, should a $100M revenue look realistic some point in your future, you’ll be catching some serious VC eyeballs. The funny thing is that when we look at the numbers, only 0.04% of companies ever reach that mark. And I can imagine that when we look at women-founded companies we can look to add another load of zero’s in front of that number. These are pretty slim chances of success, giving all the more praise to the female founders we’ve had on the show that are actively breaking through this glass ceiling.

On that note, I’m a bit hesitant to call these founders the most successful founders we’ve had on the show. Success in business isn’t just down to the level of revenue you’re creating. Whilst it’s important to audit what success looks like to you, there def isn’t a one size fits all approach here. You can aim for growth. You can aim for building an amazing community. You can aim for fame. You can aim for a sense of fulfillment. You can aim for happiness.

So, let’s get listening to the key learnings from the highest revenue generating business owners we’ve had on the show. Keep a pen and notepad at the ready, there is a LOT of food for thought here. Thank you so much for listening in. These are five women and conversations that have resonated with me enormously over the life-time of Female Startup Club, and I hope you’re able to get as much out of their journeys as I have. I’ll link each of their episodes in the show-notes if you want to dive deeper into each of their journeys.

And as always if you’re on your phone listening to this episode take a quick screenshot of the podcast and share it to your Instagram stories or leave us a review in your podcast app to help other ears find us. And of course… You’re always welcome to slide into DMs or my inbox bc you know how much I love to chat. Feel free to ask me any questions or share what you’re thinking. You can reach me directly at @dooneroisin in all the usual places.

So let’s get into it, here’s how to build a 9-figure empire.

05 Nov 2022Fave Hits: 6 Quick Questions with Charlotte Chen Pienaar, Founder of Everyday Humans (Part 2)00:04:43

15 Aug 2022The journey to 2 x $100M companies with serial entrepreneur, WILD, Thinx & Tushy founder Miki Agrawal (part 1)00:36:02

Lately, I’ve been talking a lot with other founders about the big difference between what VCs are actually investing in and what women are building. There’s a real disconnect there and a serious need to bridge that gap. And it can feel overwhelming when the stats aren’t changing. So it was refreshing to chat with someone who had a more positive outlook. A female founder who has gone from the behind-the-scenes of the VC world to building her own brand - Ritual - and going on to raise $60M+ in funding. Kat has seen the problem first-hand. She sees women having great ideas, but the funding just not being there. She sees the funding opportunities to change lives go to waste. But she also sees change. She sees many more women investing in women. She sees the unlock of a female-focused economy. And she sees three-quarters of her board consisting of strong, powerful women. We’re on the right track. If you decide to embark on the exciting adventure of raising VC capital, this episode is for you. Embrace the commitment, and nurture those relationships and trust. Those are the two things that are always going to get people over the line.

Before we jump in a quick reminder on the girl code - you know we love it! And I’m doing a call out for our loyal listeners to be involved in our new content series where you DM me a voice note or a question about anything across business, life, or relationships to feature on the show! You can send it to me personally on Instagram or through Female Startup Club’s Instagram - I’m so excited about this one!

Let’s get into today’s episode, this is Kat for Female Startup Club.

07 Jul 20226 quick questions with Samantha Brett, Founder of Naked Sundays (part 2/2)00:11:30

23 May 20236 Quick Questions with Ami Bateman, Co-founder Pleasant State (part 2)00:05:54

This is Ami Bateman for Female Startup Club

Hi everyone and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl! If you’ve just found us - we are SO grateful and happy to have you here. Every week on the Female Startup Club podcast I interview some of the world’s most successful founders and women in business to understand their blueprint to success. And today you’re going to meet fellow Aussie, Ami Bateman. Ami is the co-founder of Australia’s first just-add-water non toxic cleaning company Pleasant State. And this is the first in a mini series where we take you through Ami’s journey in starting Pleasant State right through to their just launched equity crowdfunding campaign. And it is SO interesting! We’re talking about the challenges that we still face as women entering the fundraising scene and what she’s learned trying to access more capital to scale their booming business. If you’ve ever thought about an equity crowdfunding campaign for your business - this is worth grabbing your notepad.

And just one last thing before we get into this episode and while I have you here. I just want to give you some hype girl energy to get out there and start posting on TikTok today. A few weeks ago I shared something completely left of field to my usual content online - very personal - kind of gross - and it has just exploded online! I’m talking millions of views, thousands of followers, hundreds of new subscribers - press and syndication on other platforms - and it really just reminded me that the power of TikTok is still just so insane and so here for everyone to access. It’s free to use. It’s just a time investment. And it’s worth it. So go check out the video and then DM me if you want to learn more about TikTok! I’m thinking about putting together some TikTok assets to help kickstart your journey.

Alrighty let’s do this! This is Ami for Female Startup Club.

02 Feb 2023How to get from 30 mom ’n pop stores to 10,000 retailers including Whole Foods and Walmart with Pop & Bottles co-founder, Jash Mehta (Part 1)00:44:03

This is Jash Mehta for Female Startup Club

Hello and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here - your host and hype girl. Today on the show we’re learning from Jash Mehta, founder of Pop & Bottle. Pop & Bottle was inspired when Jash Mehta and her close friend Blair Hardy made the move from the London to California meeting for their daily ritual - the morning latte.

As coffee lovers who also prioritized health, the two friends asked themselves why nothing on the grocery store shelves met their standards: clean label, dairy-free, no refined sugar, and organic. Jash co-founded Pop & Bottle from a genuine desire to create quality coffee and tea beverages she wanted in her own life — and make them available to the millions of people who share in her passion for clean, healthful, high-integrity products.

We talk through her early blueprint which his still super relevant to today and how she expanded from 30 to 100 stores and then onto 10,000. If you’re in the food and Bev industry - grab your pen and paper and settle in for an episode packed with valuable insights.

And today is your last chance to join us inside Majic before we close the doors to founding members and go back to our regular pricing. It’s inside Majic that you can meet women like Jash and ask direct questions in an intimate setting, connect with other founders who are pre-launch or in the early stages of building their brand and access tonnes of resources/sops and frameworks that you can implement into your life and business today. If you’ve been excited about joining us, go to femalestartupclub.com/majic - with a J and when you sign up you’ll be prompted to book your 1-1 call with me so I can get to know you better.

01 Sep 2022DYMO Presents: Bondi Blades founder Ali Clarke bootstrapped her biz from $50 bucks to $1M in ARR, here’s her exact blueprint to success00:41:01

21 Nov 2022Lulu Ge is building the modern day Traditional Chinese Medicine platform to deal with women’s hormone health and chronic period pain, this is the the Elix blueprint (Part 1)00:36:58

30 Aug 2023SUMMER ‘23 - 6 quick questions with Kaylin Marcotte, Founder of Jiggy Puzzles (Part 2)00:10:44

01 Oct 2023She turned $128 into a 6 Figure Business at just 9 Years Old, with founder of Lily Lou’s Aromas, Lily Harper (Part 1)00:22:17

This is Lily Harper for Female Startup Club

Welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl. So todays episode is very special, this is the youngest entrepreneur we’ve ever had on the show - by a long shot - and Lily is proof that when you set your mind to something and you follow your dreams and goals - amazing things can happen, no matter how old or young you are.

Lily Harper is an 9 year old entrepreneur and the founder of Lily Lou’s Aromas, and her story starts when she was being emotionally and physically bullied in school. So during the pandemic when schools were shut down students were sent to learn from home, and Lily found a passion in creating beautiful scented products. She started to thrive.

With a hyper-creative mind, Lily is continually coming up with new ideas and has set huge goals for herself and her company. An important foundation of Lily’s personal and business life is that she is involved in every decision, from Lily Lou’s Aromas to how her school day is planned out. This gives Lily the opportunity to learn and acquire knowledge and essential skills, while maintaining the freedom to grow in the direction she chooses.

A strong advocate against bullying, Lily is extremely involved in areas of charity work that holds significant meaning to her.

It was such an honour to get to chat with Lily about what she’s building and how she’s living her life - she’s an inspiration to us all.

06 Jun 20226 Quick Questions with Lizanne Falsetto, Founder of thinkThin® and betterland foods™. (part 2)00:11:26

Today on the show we’re learning from Lizanne Falsetto, the founder of thinkThin® and betterland foods™.

Lizanne began her entrepreneurial journey at her kitchen table, inspired both by a family recipe and a strong desire to solve a personal problem. On that table, the original thinkThin® bar was created: a revolutionary product that would become one of the most sought-after health foods on the market.

Her original instinct for a clear market opportunity in health food evolved into a 20-year tenure as founder and CEO of one of the fastest-growing health food brands in history and was eventually acquired for $217 m in 2015.

In 2020, as the pandemic disrupted life the world over, she was intrigued by the influx of food scientists creating cleaner, alternative proteins without the direct use of animals. These discoveries rekindled her entrepreneurial verve and led her to establish betterland foods™, a new venture committed to creating crave-able, delicious foods that are better for people – and better for the planet.

There are so many learnings and lessons woven into this episode and I’m just so excited to be able to share this inspiring conversation with you. We chat about the early days of building the brand when Lizanne was still modeling and would bring her home-creations to shoots to get feedback. How this natural desire led her to walk straight into the path of entrepreneurship, and how she learned what she was doing along the way. Setting up "Harvard for a day" chats with consultants, and just getting her product into as many hands as possible.

How important it is to keep your messaging consistent. Especially when you have limited ways to get your voice out there, to stay consistent with your messaging. And my favorite tip of all, how important it is to have your own personal financial situation in check when you get into building a business and possibly raising capital. It's so important to understand this, in order to understand the ramifications down the line. We round off by chatting about her incredible exit selling thinkThin® for $217 million. And how important it is to be ready spiritually, mentally, and emotionally before selling your business. Now, let's get straight into it.

If you love it as much as I did and you learn something, please do share it on Instagram tagging us or by leaving a review to help other ears find us.

10 Jan 2023Best of ‘22 - 6 Questions with Zara Saleem, Founder of Delhicious (Part 2)00:07:57

Today we’re learning from Zara Saleem, the founder of Delhicious. A 100% natural Ayurvedic-inspired skincare brand that started in her kitchen while on mat leave.

And this has many important insights packed in here; for Zara it was a veryyyy slow start but at some point, the TikTok gods kicked in and changed the game. We also talk about how hard the challenges of building a business are, especially when we see the highlights splashed across social media. I loved this episode and felt like we can all relate to the ups and downs of building a business and what it truly entails.

When it comes to the financials, Zara was able to bootstrap Delhicious with a slow and steady approach. Starting with just a couple of hundred pounds, she was able to just wing it and see how far she could take this. Skincare's low barrier to entry is a huge help when it comes to this, it's totally doable to start a skincare business with a low initial investment. Start scrappy, go slow, prove out the concept, and just start there. If you're going to spend too much too early, you're going to feel that. More so emotionally you're going to feel that loss. So as much as you can, save and do things yourself before letting go. Relieve some of that pressure off your shoulders.

This was such an inspirational story that shows there is absolutely nothing truly stopping you from starting a business today.

Let’s get into this episode, this is Zara for Female Startup Club.

22 Sep 20226 quick questions with Meha Agrawal, Founder of Silk + Sonder (Part 2)00:09:39

Today we’re chatting to Meha Agrawal, the founder of Silk + Sonder! Silk + Sonder is a guided self care and mental wellness platform and community, generating millions of dollars in recurring revenue and serving tens of thousands of women across the US.

I thought this episode was so cool because Meha is a pro at blending DTC with tech and community. We talk through her start and how she got her first customers, what makes her community sticky and the lessons she learned from raising millions of dollars in capital; and it’s not what you might think!

Meha ended up raising $4M across a pre-seed and a seed back in 2020, and I was so excited to dig into her story. The first thing to remember is that getting your first cheque doesn’t make the other cheques magically appear. Every investor is different, every investor cared about a different part of your business. You have to be able to speak to the power of community if that’s what they’re interested in, CPG if that’s what they’re interested in. Essentially, treat investors how you would treat your customers. And a real golden nugget is that going out to raise when you don’t necessarily need the funding is the best time to raise. It will allow you to run that process authentically which is so important.

And remember to join our waitlist at femalestartupclub.com/waitlist ahead of our upcoming announcement! I’m excited to tell you more in the coming weeks!

21 Jun 20226 Quick Questions with Tara Bosch, founder of Smartsweets (part 2)00:12:24

16 Feb 20236 quick questions with Briana Olson, Founder of Trio Beauty (Part 2)00:18:43

28 Sep 2022What happens when a climate activist becomes a tech founder? With One Small Step’s Founder Lily Dempster (part 1)00:35:53

Today we’re learning from Lily Dempster, the founder of One Small Step app.

One Small Step is a social enterprise that uses technology and behavioural science to make it easy and rewarding for people to successfully adopt greener habits and reduce their carbon emissions. Their vision is to harness the best aspects of humanity to help avert the climate crisis and secure an environmentally-healthy future. It’s designed to help millions of people reduce their carbon emissions and offers a clear path to personal net zero emissions and climate positivity through the delivery of free science-based, data-informed courses and habits.

One Small Step gives clarity on the impact of the food you eat, the purchases you make, how you travel, the energy you use, and the waste you produce. It then provides solutions via easy, step-by-step courses to reduce emissions, with the option to switch to trusted sustainability products & services.

This was such an interesting episode for me! I’m less in the loop when it comes to the blueprint of building an app and acquiring users so I learnt a lot and I’m sure you will too. I also loved hearing about the things that Lily would do differently if she had a chance to start up again. When it comes to investing, it's important to remember that it's an ambitious and massive undertaking. Not having a strong revenue loop built in from the outset has made it harder because you're spending so much energy on the investment piece. It might have made more sense to get to their point of covering her own costs before embarking on that raise. In that case you're raising to scale up, not raising to surive. You'll have a much strong pitch.

20 Jul 2023From Ecomm Lessons at Stylerunner to the Ultimate Playbook in Tech with Wrapd’s Co-Founder Julie Stevanja (formerly Her Black Book) (Part 1)00:44:28

This is Julie Stevanja for Female Startup Club

Hello and welcome back to the show! It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl! If you’ve just found us - hi! Love this for you. And me. Every week we’re learning from some of the world’s most brilliant minds in business. Like the co-founder of Wrapd, Julie Stevanja (formerly known as Her Black Book). Julie and her twin sister Sali have been building businesses for women since 2012 back when they first launched Stylerunner and now they’re back at it again taking the lessons they learned with that business to build Wrapd. It’s a premium app for shoppers to discover deals and brands.

We chat about Julie Stevanja sharing her ultimate tech playbook for launching into the wild, wild west of the world of apps - and there is some serious gold in here for both techy and CPG founders. Remember, this journey should be fun too! Embrace your voice and be bold with it. Launching a successful app is an entrepreneurial journey filled with ups and downs, but with the right attitude and a little help from your friends (slash tech co-founders), your launch will be a sparkling success.

In this episode we’re talking through the learnings from Stylerunner and the difference between building a brand that’s e-commerce focused vs a tech company, and how that fits into the world of VC as well as a bunch of interesting gems when it comes to the playbook of launching an app.

A quick note on housekeeping. If you love this episode please take a tiny action and share this episode with a friend, post it on social media, or leave us a review - and if you want to feature on the show send us a voicemail on Instagram DMs with your question or topic - I’m loving the ones we’ve had come through already!

28 Jun 20226 Quick Questions with Tash Todd Williams, founder of Word of Mouth Collective (part 2)00:14:38

18 Nov 20226 quick questions with Jenny Goldfarb, Founder of The Mrs. Goldfarb's Unreal Deli (Part 2)00:10:17

It’s Doone here, your host and hype girl. It is the most beautiful today here in Sydney, I’ve got little Sweetie sitting on my lap and we’ve got a cracker episode today with Jenny Goldfarb, the founder of Mrs Goldfarb’s Unreal Deli. Jenny grew up watching her family run deli’s in NYC but after watching a video of how animals actually get slaughtered she changed her life and set out on a mission to create her favourite food in plant version.

Jenny is the kind of person you could chat to for hours - she’s got a story made of gold and in this episode you’ll hear her tell me all about her grassroots efforts to get the word out there by doing door to door sales, trawling Facebook groups to find people like her to connect with, the key piece advice that saved her business and a mistake that cost for her $100k.

22 Dec 2022Best of ‘22 - 6 quick questions with Rowena Bird, Founder of Lush (Part 2)00:12:20

Today we are learning from Rowena Bird, Co-Founder of Lush Cosmetics. A business that started 27 years ago in Poole, the UK.

Since 1995, Lush has been a trailblazer in the cosmetics industry. From inventing bath bombs and creating new, innovative products to fighting animal testing and ethical campaigning, it’s come a long way since its humble beginnings. Lush’s journey is ongoing. And as it continues to grow and evolve in ways that keep breaking new ground in the cosmetics industry, it’s a journey that is so interesting to dig into.

In this episode we chat about the importance of hiring people smarter than you, building organic growth and word-of-mouth into the business, and what led LUSH to make the drastic decision to come off social media, as well as a golden tip when it comes to the financial side of things.

When it gets to the people piece, Rowena shared some real wisdom. Talking about the people you’re building this with, the people you’re facing every day, it’s important to genuinely like and respect them. Not just for your sake, but for all parties involved. At the end of the day, if you’re not looking forward to talking to someone you might not be opening up to issues in the business. And that’s obviously an issue. In everything from your co-founders, to your investor relations and the people you hire, business continues to be all about relationships and people.

I know you’re going to absolutely LOVE this episode.
