It was beyond time to revisit this film that was part of my formative years. We first covered this film early in the podcast days and during the pandemic. There wasn't a clear format back then so any opportunity I have to talk about how much this film means to me is warranted. On this episode we use our regular format with reviews and me and Jai get a new look through Jules' eyes who was seeing it for the first time.

What do you get when you have werewolves, Christina Ricci, Jesse Eisenberg, and Joshua Jackson in an underdeveloped trainwreck of a film? You have a literal 'cursed' movie. It's always more fun to rag on movies that are totally ridiculous in every sense of the word with a cast that you fully enjoy. That's exactly what happened when I showed Charles and Jai this forgotten film of the 2000s. 

We talk about the NUMEROUS setbacks, recasting, and just all around problems that lead to this mess.

Well, in this film we didn't get a Final Analysis but boy did we get a whiplash of a story. Based on the movie poster I thought I was getting this racy erotic thriller and while we kinda did, we ended up getting baited and switched in a good way. 

Me and Charles had a good first time watch with some surprising results. The fashion, the film noir structure, and the nod to Hitchcock we definitely noticed.

There is nothing that excites me more than talking about television. As a true child of the 90s, I lived by the tv on weeknights. One of the formative shows of my teenage years is and will always be, Dawson's Creek.

Wait so nobody told me how iconic this movie actually is. I have seen Queen of the Damned or parts of it so long ago that I basically haven't seen it. OMG. 

I mean disregard the weird storylines and you have a (dope) 90 minute nu-metal music video with a vampire b-story...awesome. 

Since it's October and in keeping with the spooky mood we have to talk vampires. Me and Jules had literally the best time talking about this film and discovering all these amazing behind the scenes facts. For the hour we basically complain that there wasn't more Aaliyah (RIP Forever), wish we could pull off these costumes, and talk about how Twilight toootallly was biting the style years later.

This is one that has been on my list for a while. It's a dicey late 90s film which were popular at the time. Mikey has some interesting thoughts as a first time watcher and for me this has a whole nostalgia factor since it reminds me of high school.

There is one thing that I genuinely miss about early 00s indie films. Going into the video rental shop and seeing a cover with one of your favorite actors and just taking a whim on a new film. That's exactly how I discovered Pieces of April from 2003. 

Starring Katie Holmes who we all loved from Dawson's Creek, and with Patricia Clarkson playing her mother it immediately caught my attention. With a shoe string budget the story and incredible acting takes such a simple story of family dynamics over a holiday weekend and it spins into such a great story and film to watch this season. 

Me and Mikey talk about our first time watch (we think?), being shocked this was the only time Patricia Clarkson was nominated for an Oscar, and talk all about how great 'baddie' Katie Holmes looks.

I flew into a late 90s flurry when I saw that episodes of Popular were on Youtube. From the mind of Ryan Murphy in 1999 this is not your typical show about high school. Both me and Mikey are day 1 fans and we talk our history with the show, the evolution of Ryan Murphy, and why Mary Cherry is one of the best tv characters ever.

This film was ALOT. I quickly remembered why I bought this DVD at a video store closing shop ages ago for less than $5. There were so many aspects of this film we forgot about since our recent rewatch. We get into the confusing tone of the story, an undiscovered fashion icon in Michelle Forbes, and literally wonder where this 9 mil budget went.

There are only a handful of films that I can quote by heart and don't even need to watch to be able to talk about. The First Wives Club, the 1996 sleeper but box office hit is that film for me and my friends Mikey and Charles. 

We love this story so much that it has been burned into our brains for most of our adult lives. Throughout the episode we question why a film about divorced women really spoke to us at age 13, which woman we identify with, and just basically quote the entire film.

Go rent , go buy, go watch this film immediately.

Well, it's taken us about two years but we are finally diving into the waters of the 90s 'made for TV' movies. It was only right that the first one we reviewed was the cult classic, Mother May I Sleep with Danger? 

I was more than excited to get Charles' thoughts as a first time viewer and it was as wild as expected. We get into how the tv landscape changed, the MANY comparisons to the movie 'Fear, and why Tori Spelling is the Queen.

For the next venture into classic cinema we're looking at the origins of the buzz word that everyone talks about, Gaslight. This film from 1944 is a literal masterclass in acting and film noir study. This was one of the first films that introduced me into the old Hollywood world and I'm glad that Charles is with me discussing this brilliant and riveting story. We get into the quirks of this story, the terrifying realism of Charles Boyer's character, and question why they made him so attractive.

Oh, the early 2000s. A whimsical time where we were just figuring out this new cultural shift after the 90s decade. The new millennium was an interesting time in so many ways. We had a new era of reality tv to cling to in the form of Laguna Beach and later The Hills. 

We talked the first episode of Laguna on Patreon a while ago but I had to go deeper with another pop culture afficianado, Kelli Williams of Beyond the Blinds Podcast and the Laguna Biotch account on IG.

Groovy! For our Forward Flash we're going back yet again to the NY art world of the 60s. Enter in Edie Sedgwick and Andy Warhol's 'The Factory'. This is one of my favorite episodes yet because there is so much mystery and intrigue surrounding the life of Edie Sedgwick. Her influence, style, and just overall vibe is something truly to behold. Sienna Miller as Edie and Guy Pearce as Andy is beyond and makes for such a great film. 

Me and Jai obsess about the FASHION, try to work out what is true and what was dramatized, and I tell my own story meeting Jude Law (and yes, Sienna Miller was there)

Oh the depressive nostalgia of your 20s is upon us. Yeah, you guessed it we're talking Garden State. It reads like a 75% memoir of writer/director Zach Braff and literally hit me and Jai right in the feels during our rewatch. There were so many familiar emotions that came rushing back including how this soundtrack defined the 'indie generation' of the early 2000s.

It's been a while since we've reviewed a film after 2000. Y Tu Mamá También has been on my list and it's the perfect film for this summer heat and the spirit of adventure and exploration. 

Me and Jai had a great time diving into this world that neither one of us have visited in quite a while. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón who takes you on a short but fulfilling journey that leaves you questioning and reminiscing about your own similar experiences. 

We found a lot of behind the scenes info, drool over Gael, and realize just how much we relate to Luisa.

Imagine a wanderlust summer  in a sun drenched villa on the hill in Tuscany. That's where this film takes us in a perfect summer film. This being Liv Tyler's first starring role is insane because she floats through this whole film like the beautiful dream that she is. 

Me and Jai took a walk down memory lane with our own similar stories of unforgettable summers away from home. We didn't find out a lot in terms of behind the scenes, but we do touch on the questionable history of the directors previous works. Including some aspects of this story which could have done without the male gaze. 

As always we get into the fashion and music which are top notch. This has sleeper soundtrack you may not be expecting with Portishead, Hole, Liz Phair, Nina Simone, etc... Just a cinematic dream along with fashion designs from Giorgio Armani.

What started out as a joke and just an idea for a "Razzie" series has now become a full fledged episode on the pod. It has been widely accepted that Batman & Robin from '97 effectively killed the franchise for a number of years. I happen to love Batman Forever and enjoy the campy and comic aspect of the Joel Schumacher versions of the caped crusader. 

Batman/Bruce Wayne is my all time favorite superhero so instead of only trashing this version (yes, it really was that bad), me and Mikey decided to see the humor in it and actually come to the realization that we were robbed of a Poison Ivy Multiverse.

Wow. We're here. Actually you've brought us here because this film won our instagram poll for next up. It's time to take a deep breath and witness some 'urban horror' on screen. Often listed as a film that you would never want to see twice, I happen to disagree. In order to keep from getting too grim I found lots of behind the scenes and technical notes about the filming itself. The casting was beyond top notch, THAT haunting score, and the subtle fashion in this film that I really enjoyed.

There is such a distinct memory I have watching Rebecca for the first time. My Mom showed this to me when I was about 10 and thank goodness because my bar for cinema was set pretty high from the jump. 

This is one of me and Charles' all time favorite films and we have been quoting it in real life for years so it's high time we review it proper. We get into the behind the scenes drama with Hitchcock and the producer Selznick, casting drama and mess, and have another Oscar rage segment because this is a near perfect film.

It's rare that an actor inhabits a role so much that even the people closest to the real Jim Morrison were confused on whether or not it was really him. In the 1991 film by Oliver Stone Val Kilmer became the legendary lead singer of The Doors.

I was ultra stoked to talk about this film because I have a real life super fan of The Doors along for the ride, Jai! We talked about the real story of the band, the conspiracy theories, and wonder why Meg Ryan was cast as Pamela.

Ok, so for this one I took a chance and found a film that both me and Mikey haven't seen before. I vividly remember seeing tv spots during the 1997 MTV VMAs. The casting immediately was my draw, that and being directed by Oliver Stone. Well, suffice to say that we were underwhelmed with this script in particular. The beautiful cinematography by Robert Richardson was particularly striking despite the lacking story. 

We did find something to talk about like the amazing desert fashion, interesting music choices, and how this ending was kinda buck wild but fitting.

YES! We're finally talking one of the most iconic films of the 60s starring the King of Cool, Steve McQueen. Bullitt is one of my cornerstones as a youth because I love cars and this is the most important car chase ever filmed. There are so many behind the scenes technical details on how this story came together, Steve McQueen's quest for authenticity, and driving that brings a tear to my eyes.

To say that I'm beyond thrilled to talk about Amadeus would be an understatement. Like I have mentioned before, I can't believe it has taken this long to review this literal perfect film. The obsessive nature between the two men we compare to more contemporary film dynamics (*cough Saltburn). We are talking the Director's Cut of this film since the extra 20 minutes are just a gift to us as cinefiles. I honestly don't think there is anything bad to say about this film and we talk about how a 'Best Picture' winner hasn't really come close since. 

Me and Charles had such a great time finding out all the behind the scenes, the history of the real men, and get into how we love to watch films about rivalries.

Was this just a movie that I liked because I was 18 and does it hold up all these years later? The answer is yes and I'm so glad this is one of those DVDs that I've kept since 2002.

Another disturbing film that we both went into not knowing anything about. And we sorta wish it stayed that way. It was through this dark journey we learned all about the underground world of sn*ff films. I basically decided to watch this because of Nicolas Cage and Joaquin Phoenix.

Another guest in the house for a trip back to the 90s with our patron saint of the 'TV Movie' , Tori Spelling in Death of a Cheerleader (1994). 

This was a more complicated story than we originally thought. We didn't end up loving the movie version and how they essentially manipulated us in the end, but the acting performances were pretty stellar. This includes another batch of hilarious Letterboxd reviews.

We get into why we were shocked that the story devolved the way it did, the pretty realistic but impressive fashion, and some interesting cameos.

Growing up one of my all time favorite shows was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We called it "appointment television". I was spending time queuing up my VCR so I could record each episode. 

I'm joined by my childhood friends Mikey and Charles who are also super fans. We decided to space out our chats about the seasons since we wanted to give it a proper rewatch. So expect a Season 2 deep dive soon. 

For now we just give a starter episode into the world of Buffy, the eventual Scooby gang, and Sunnydale.

Finally I've stepped into the world of David Cronenberg films. It really is fitting that the first one I see and review is Crash from 1996. It was both me and Charles' first watch and we were enthralled. The exploration of subcultures I always find fascinating and this certain was that. We talk about the physical reactions to car crashes, how James Spader is THAT one, and constantly remind you that it's not the same film as that abomination that won Best Picture in 2004.

Some considerable time has passed since we last explored the 'movie of the week' genre on the podcast. Luckily, if we ever run out of 90s films to talk about, there are literally thousands to pull from. This is one that has really stuck with me since I was a teenager. I remember taping this from tv and cutting the commercials out so I could watch it back uninterrupted. Out of all of the films, this particular one I watched ALL the time. 

I got Charles on this episode who knew nothing about it to watch it for the episode. While you think it may be a more lighthearted tale of a girl who leaves home, that is most definitely not the whole story. It gets pretty dark when this teenager is coping with how to survive on the streets with her 19 year old (eek) boyfriend/partner in crime. We talk the ins and outs of the story and just how much happens to them along the way, the holes in the story, and why we wish there was a more detailed ending to this tale.

Since last week was my birthday I decided to unlock a Patreon episode! Enjoy 2 hrs of 90210 talk!

Description: 

This show was really wild. In order to fill a schedule with over 270 episodes the amount of storylines that 90210 produced is just out there. Since we aren't devoting the entire show to recapping the show me and Charles decided to pick some of our standouts and it has to do with the vices and party drugs that crept into the show. 

At first we take a lighthearted fun approach to underground rave culture with (shock!) bad girl Emily Valentine. In Season 2's U4EA (1991) episode we get into the fashion that's amazing, Emily's vibe and how much Brenda hates her, and how Brandon is actually cool to be around for once. 

Now, it takes a different and darker turn in Season 6's Snowbound (1996) we get a front row seat to the development of 'Cocaine Kelly' and her relationship with "artist" Colin. There are so many iconic moments that we get into about the show as a whole and just how Luke Perry is so amazing and will forever be the glue of the show.

I've been wanting to check this one off the list for a while. With Larry Clark being one of my favorite directors, this was an early one in his filmography.  Now, this was a weird one for me. There were certain aspects that I was expecting that didn't really make sense for me. In this episode I worked out the bias I was going into the film with, and explain the concept of a 'that guy' in movies and tv.

From its early underground days where bands like Black Flag drew inspiration from the DIY ethos of punk, Left Of The Dial traces the history of the network of fans, clubs and fanzines that sustained the scene and launched the careers of bands like R.E.M., The Pixies and Hüsker Dü. The film takes a fresh look at the explosion of the Seattle scene, culminating in the success of Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and the tragic loss of Kurt Cobain, an artist whose triumph and tragedy continues to cast an inescapable shadow.

Well what can we say about Havoc? There is so much to say and yet so little at the same time. It really is quite an accomplishment in film. While most of the actors would like to pretend that this never happened, but guess what "the North remembers".

I roped Charles into this review as we explore the real underbelly of the y2k cringe genre. We constantly ask, "Oh, (actors name) what are you doing here?" From the offensive accents and affects, the dreadful fashion, and the horrifying reality that people like this exist.

It's another wild ride with a dark comedy about dysfunctional families. This one happens to be a sleeper with an incredible cast that delivers throughout. Witness! God, I love this movie so much. Monster trucks, Tom Hardy, that is all. Why this film didn't win all the awards is beyond me and we talk all about it. What a doozy of a movie to get back to our regularly scheduled programming here on the pod. For this episode we are talking the plot hole ridden and badly acted film from 2000, The In Crowd. Now, the late 90s and early 00s are riddled with films that you can't even believe were made or 'direct to video' movies and sequels before the dawn of streaming where they would have inevitably landed today, 

Me and Mikey are here to talk our complicated feelings on this film. We do a dream casting as we would have done it, the literal madness when it comes to this story, and the few moments of levity we were able to find.

If you're looking for a seedy, movie of the week type film that almost takes you there but not quite...look to Devil in the Flesh from 1998. I had seen some of the stills one night on Tumblr, and I enlisted Mikey to chat about our first time thoughts. 

We touch on what the story needed to push further, the accurate fashion, and why a kicking soundtrack could have really saved this film.

Has anyone ever heard of this film? It's like a map point if you're in the know. Dust off your UFO pants, candy bracelets and glow sticks cause we're going back to the start of the interwebs and the tail end of communicating without cell phones. Immediately this film has the cred cause DIGWEED! Me and Jai talk our own raver stories of the late 90s, the (great at the time but actually awful) fashion, and the MUSIC!

Better late than never. It's still the weekend of the Thanksgiving holiday so here is another holiday themed film that fits the bill. I have heard of this one but it's a first time watch for me. The cast was an immediate draw that made me so amped to finally review. 

Me and Charles talked about how we loved the 70s fashion, question how this wasn't nominated for any Oscars, and basically talk other films in the 'domestic drama' category
