30 Jan 2024Episode 19: Understanding Children’s Operations00:31:15

Show Notes:

If your child has to have an operation in hospital, it’s likely that they will be anaesthetised pre-surgery, which can be a pretty scary experience for both them and for you as a parent or carer.

This episode of the Family Health Podcast is here to arm you with knowledge and allay some of those fears about what happens if your child needs to go under general anaesthetic.

We chat with Ed Rothera, a consultant paediatric anaesthetist at the Leeds Children's hospital, who explains everything you need to know about the different types of procedure and anaesthetic. You will hear about what the process will look like for your child and Ed has tips on what you can do as a parent to prepare and support them.

Learn what are the most common children’s operations and what a paediatric consultant working in a surgical theatre really thinks about trampolines!

We hope that you will never have to experience your child going under anaesthetic but forewarned is forearmed and this conversation covers it all.

27 May 2024Episode 23: Asthma00:32:50

Having asthma may once have been seen as a weakness or something to be pitied for, but is this still the case? What do we now know about the causes and treatment of asthma? Is there still some level of embarrassment for children living with asthma today?

Asthma is the most common long-term medical condition in children in the UK, affecting around 1 in 11 young people. Chances are there is at least one person in your child’s school or nursery class living with asthma. In fact, the UK has some of the highest rates of asthma in the world with over 5 million people living with the condition, including over 1 million children.

In today’s Family Health Podcast episode, we talk to Dr Greg Burch, an A&E doctor and CEO of Tiny Medical Apps which supports the NHS and charities with digital solutions to help people manage long term conditions at home. We also chat with Ambreen, whose young daughter lives with asthma, about her symptoms, treatment and the impact this has on her life.

If your child has ever felt embarrassed about having asthma or needing to use an inhaler, you will want to hear about the new digital technology that could empower them and give them autonomy over the management of their condition.

Asthma is so common that it’s really important that we all have an understanding of what it is like for our friends and family living with this condition, and how we can best look out for them. A brilliant episode, not to be missed!

10 Jun 2024Episode 25: Sports Nutrition in Teens and Pre-teens00:47:29

If your child takes part in any kind of sport or leisure activity, you will know how much of their time outside of school is dedicated to these activities and how this impacts their diet, from the lack of time to sit and eat proper meals to the type and amount of food they eat.

It is hard enough as parents to know what nutrients and vitamins our tweens and teens need and how much to feed them; adding in a fussy eater or a training schedule that requires particular energy sources at particular times means supporting their nutritional needs alongside their lifestyle becomes a huge, confusing juggle.

Today on the Family Health Podcast, we chat with Lou Matera of Youth Sport Nutrition and Dan Richardson, a Performance Nutritionist who has worked extensively with young elite athletes.

How much food your child needs, what types of vitamins and nutrients they need, when they should be eating to support their activities and how to get your child to take responsibility for their diet - these are all answered in today’s podcast episode. It’s an eye-opener for parents and children alike, make sure your young athlete listens in too!

17 Jun 2024Episode 26: Autism00:38:29

In the UK, approximately 1 in every 100 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This number is probably lower than the reality as many families don’t want or think they need an official diagnosis. Behind these numbers lie stories of resilience, uniqueness, and often, misunderstanding.

In this episode of the Family Health Podcast, we delve into the world of autism in children. We chat with Dr Hannah Hobson, a lecturer in psychology and lead of the EMERALD research lab about what autism is, how it is diagnosed and is autism really more prevalent now than a few decades ago?

This conversation goes beyond the statistics, exploring the real-life experiences of families, the challenges they face, and the immense potential that lies within each child. Parents of autistic children and non-autistic children alike will get something out of this chat and we hope that it helps everyone to understand neurodiversity a little bit better.

Dr Hannah Hobson, Lecturer in Psychology. Hannah is a lecturer at the University of York where she directs the Masters in Development, Disorders and Clinical Practice. 01 Jul 2024Episode 28: Eating Disorders00:45:12

In today’s digital society, children are bombarded with images of supposed perfection. According to recent statistics from the NHS, the struggle with body image and food among young people has surged alarmingly in recent years, with children as young as six years old being diagnosed with an eating disorder.

Behind these numbers lie stories of silent battles, where young minds grapple with complex emotions and societal pressures that often remain unseen and misunderstood.

In today’s episode of the Family Health Podcast, we chat with Olivia, a body image coach and Pernille, Founder and CEO of MindBlossom about eating disorders.

This episode comes with a gentle warning that both Olivia and Pernille share their own personal struggles with eating disorders as well as talking to us more generally about what might be going on in a young person's mind that might drive them towards an eating disorder and those sometimes subtle signs that your child might be struggling.

08 Jul 2024Episode 29: Dementia00:34:02

In today's Family Health Podcast episode, we delve into the complex landscape of dementia, a condition that not only affects individuals directly but also ripples through the lives of their loved ones.

We chat with Dr Abhi Inglis, a Specialty Doctor in Old Age Psychiatry who explains what dementia is, some of the more common early signs and symptoms and how we can best help our loved one.

We also hear from Jayne Sibley whose parents both had dementia and sadly died with this condition. Jayne talks to us about the emotional, financial, and practical burdens carried by those balancing the demands of caregiving with the progression of dementia.

If you are part of the so-called ‘sandwich generation’, caught between caring for ageing parents and supporting your own children, we know this conversation will strike a chord and we hope you take comfort and help from the information and resources signposted in this episode.

15 Jul 2024Episode 30: Weaning & Nutrition00:26:28

Weaning is a huge milestone for babies as they move from a liquid, milk diet to eating solid foods. We know that breast and formula milk contain everything baby needs to grow and thrive, but when that milk consumption drops and food takes over, what nutrients do children or little ones need and how can we make sure that they're going to get enough of them?

Today we chat with Aliya Porter, a Registered Nutritionist and a mum of three who runs Porter Nutrition and Weaning Centre. We discuss how to give your baby the best nutritional start and also how to help create lifelong good habits when it comes to diet and nutrition.

If you are about to start weaning or you are already there, you will find this conversation incredibly helpful and reassuring.
