28 Oct 2024 | Roots of Change: Sustainable Practices in South Africa | 00:51:24
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! I registered for the Old Vine Conference which took place online in mid-October. The concept of Old Vines is an intriguing one, since in the US there is no legal definition, however, in certain wine regions they are creating categories to distinguish these vines. The conference is a progressive partnership between The Old Vine Conference (OVC) and Zinfandel Advocates & Producers (ZAP). This conference took place over two days and had several sessions that I am excited to be able to share with you. This first one is about The economic sustainability of old vine wines in SOUTH AFRICA While you are listening, it would be greatly appreciated if you could take one minute to subscribe, rate and review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. Also, please be sure to check the box for automatic downloads so that new episodes of Exploring the Wine Glass show up in your “next up feed.” The next best way to support Exploring the Wine Glass is to tell your friends. If you enjoy the podcast, your wine loving friends will too. Follow me on all the socials and finally, don’t forget to head to the website, Exploring the Wine Glass.com to read the blog, and sign up for the newsletter to keep up with all the happenings. 08 Apr 2024 | The Science of Tasting Wine | 00:39:50
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I am sharing the first part of a fantastic seminar I attended hosted by Serial Wines in Paso Robles. The event was for industry and it was right up my alley. It was the science of taste. This is particularly near and dear to me as I have a published article in Wine Folly on the topic. (in fact one of the images used in the seminar was taken from that exact article - what a pleasant surprise!) This is a great seminar, and has a lot of intriguing information. Please note, that as with all recordings like this, the audio is not at peak, but I still think you will fully enjoy it. The second part of the education seminar will be next week! So be sure to come back. If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. We do not plan on doing this, but we do ask you to support the podcast by leaving a review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. The next best way to support Exploring the Wine Glass is to tell your friends. 27 Nov 2023 | The Wines of Georgia | 01:37:40
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I am sharing another webinar I attended. This one was sponsored by Wine Scholar Guild and discussed the wines of Georgia. The Republic of Georgia is known as the “cradle of wine” and the birthplace of wine. The first wine was made over 8,000 years ago in the region. Today there are over 500 grape varieties and 29 appellations. I hope you enjoy the conversation, and let me know if you have tried any of the wines discussed in the webinar. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, we return to Winephabet Street with more burning wine questions. We had so many questions that we had to break them up into two episodes. In this episode we discuss wine and food pairings, the truth about sulfites and what exactly is terroir just to mention a few. If you have any questions, I’d love to hear them! If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. We do not plan on doing this, but we do ask you to support the podcast by leaving a review. 07 Aug 2023 | Best of: Brunello, Barolo and Barbaresco! | 01:12:57
Today, I am sharing a Best of episode. This originally dropped on June 22, 2020 and has had a significant amount of downloads, so I thought I would bring it up to the forefront for anyone who missed it. Do you remember your elementary school days? There were the small desks and short water fountains. You stayed in one classroom, but the subject you were learning about changed throughout the day. Oh, and don’t forget about recess! The best time of the day! Back then, the three Rs were all the rage! Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. It is said that there are three learning styles: visual, auditory and kinesthetic. For wine lovers, kinesthetic is definitely our favorite modality. The best way to learn about wine is to taste it and over the last few months I was privileged to taste my way through the Three Bs of Italy. On today’s episode, I am sharing another Raid Y(our) Cellar virtual event I attended hosted by Benchmark Wine Group on Barolo and Barbaresco made from Nebbiolo and Brunello which is made from Sangiovese. Better known as the Three Bs. These virtual tastings are free to join but you may want to contribute in support of the United Sommeliers Foundation, a non for profit organization that helps wine industry professionals during times of hardship. If you’d like to make a donation you can click here. Now, unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and lets discuss the 100% Nebbiolo regions of Barolo and Barbaresco. Follow me on Instagram! Today, as promised, I am sharing the second part of a fantastic seminar I attended hosted by Serial Wines in Paso Robles. I hope you enjoyed the first part. Today, we continue with the senses and how to relate to the taste of wine. The background noise is a bit louder, (as more alcohol was consumed.) As a reminder, the event was for industry and it was right up my alley. It was the science of taste. This is particularly near and dear to me as I have a published article in Wine Folly on the topic. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, I am sitting down with Deb Stilson of Stilson Cellars in downtown Paso Robles. What started as a “Wouldn’t that be great if…” led to “We can actually do this.. And we are doing it.” After months of searching for the ideal location, Deb and her sons, Cole and Tyler took the plunge. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, we return the the Paso Robles Downtown Vibe event. The second opportunity people had to taste the wines from downtown wineries was in a food and wine pairing. The event was a huge success. Wines from Indigene', Sea Shell, Serial, Stilson, and Symbiosis were poured alongside Chef Alma's creations. After hearing the descriptions of the food and how they pair with the wines, you will be wiping the drool off your phone. . It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Between Jason’s blog, Instagram Lives, and YouTube channel, there is always something exciting to learn about wine. Through a partnership with Château de Beaucastel in the Rhone Valley, Tablas Creek is also responsible for bringing Rhone varieties to Paso Robles and beyond. 11 Mar 2024 | Sharing the Cab Franc Love in Paso Robles | 01:09:00
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Before I get into the podcast, I wanted to let you know that Apple had a podcast update. This caused an issue with the automatic downloads. If you are not receiving Exploring the Podcast in your “next up” feed, it is because the settings have changed. Please go to library, then shows, and click Exploring the Wine Glass. If you don’t see a checkmark in the top right corner, next to the three dots, the system does not download automatically. Please click on the down arrow and turn on automatic downloads. This will put a checkmark next to the three dots. This will allow you to always know when a new episode drops. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you so much for following Exploring the Wine Glass. If you have been following me for a while, you will know that I am the founder of Cab Franc Day. I created the holiday back in 2015 and still am in shock at how the holiday has flourished. There is so much Cab Franc love out there, it truly warms my heart. Today, there are celebrations all over the world recognizing Cab Franc Day and this podcast is a recording of one of those celebrations - in Paso Robles. Please note that this was in a large room so the sound is not as crisp as it typically is. If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today’s podcast is a bit of a diversion from the typical, but it is a topic that is extremely important to me. Supporting our veterans. This Memorial Day, many Paso Robles wineries will be participating in Vino for Vets. Each winery will be doing something different, but they all will be helping to raise funds for Honor Flight Central Coast California. The mission of the charity is to honor all of America’s veterans by taking them to Washington D.C. on their “Tour of Honor” for no cost to them. This Memorial Day weekend stop by Dracaena Wines along with about 30 other wineries to drink for a cause. And the next time you see a veteran, be sure to thank them for their service and welcome them home. Please take a moment to rate and review the podcast. 30 Sep 2024 | Grenache Day 2024 Conversation | 01:09:41
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! The third Thursday of September is International Grenache Day. I attended a webinar in celebration of the day with California wineries who all produce Grenache or as I prefer to call it Garnacha. The panel was moderated by Larry Schaffer of Tercero Wines. I love me some Garnacha and am always happy to learn more about the variety. The most intriguing concept for me during this conversation was the range of expressions the winemakers were able to create with this beautiful variety. While you are listening, it would be greatly appreciated if you could take one minute to subscribe, rate and review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. 19 Dec 2022 | Graciano on Winephabet Street | 01:14:06
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today we return to Winephabet Street where the letter of the day is G and it stands for Graciano. Our guest sponsor for the episode is Jada Vineyards and our special guest is the one and only Josh Harp, This is his third time on the podcast and he continues to be a wealth of information. Graciano is popular in Navarra and Rioja regions of Spain. It found its way to California and although not the most popular grape variety it is relatively quite a bit in Paso Robles. There were 280 tons crushed in 2021, which may not sound like a lot, but considering there were only 980 tons crushed across all of California that equates to 29% of all of the state. Please take a moment to rate and review the podcast. Did you know you can do it right now, while you are listening? It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! A couple of years ago, I had the honor of visiting Abruzzo for a press trip. It was an incredible week, filled with amazing views and magnificent wine. I learned so much about the region and fell in love with its wines. I linked my article about the trip in the show notes. Today, I am sharing the audio from a Wine Scholar Guild webinar I attended a while back. It was relatively long and took place over two days, so I am splitting it up into multi-episodes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. While you are listening, it would be greatly appreciated if you could take one minute to subscribe, rate and review. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, I am sharing a Master Class I attended virtually on Plavak Mali. This Croatian grape is an indigenous black grape variety that produces medium to full-bodied reds. Its name translated into English means Little Blue One or Small Blue, which is a perfect descriptor for the berries. They are small, blue in appearance and characterized by thick, tannin rich skin. The webinar was put on by Croatian Premium Wine Imports. If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. We do not plan on doing this, but we do ask you to support the podcast by leaving a review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. 18 Nov 2024 | From Firehouse to Vineyard: Greg Allen's Journey with Cuatro Dias Winery | 00:59:14
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, I’m thrilled to welcome Greg Allen, owner and winemaker of Cuatro Dias Winery in Paso Robles. Greg’s story is as bold and inspiring as the wines he crafts. Before stepping into the vineyard, Greg spent years serving as a firefighter, dedicating himself to protecting lives and communities. But even in the midst of the firehouse chaos, his passion for winemaking quietly burned. That passion eventually ignited into a full-blown journey, and Cuatro Dias was born—named after the four-day firefighter shifts that shaped his life and gave him time to dream big. Now, Greg pours his heart into every bottle, blending the strength of his past with the creativity and finesse of his present. Today, we’ll explore his transition from the fireline to the vineyard, his philosophy on winemaking, and, of course, the magic behind Cuatro Dias wines. While you are listening, it would be greatly appreciated if you could take one minute to subscribe, rate and review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, I am returning to the love of all things Merlot! I had the pleasure of sitting down with Josh Harp, winemaker for Jada Vineyards in Paso Robles. The day started with a tour of the facility and a stroll around to see all the new things that are happening at the beautiful site on the West side of Paso. This is the second time I have had Josh on the podcast. If you would like to listen to the first one, it is episode 201. In that episode we talk more about the winery and its beginnings - including why they have a wine called Jersey Girl! During the interview, which was recorded on site, you may hear some background noise as it was recorded at the winery and a few head shakes from Vegas as he was visiting the dog friendly Jada Vineyards with me. Please take a moment of your time to rate and review the podcast. You can do it while you are listening. Those not so easy to understand algorithms look for new reviews in order to suggest the podcast to other wine lovers. 08 May 2023 | Best of: Bordeaux Terroir | 01:01:53
BEST OF EPISODE: ORIGINAL DROP: Monday Dec 28, 2020 It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today I am sharing with you a Zoom event I attended about Bordeaux Terroir. Terroir is defined as the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate. It also relates to the characteristic taste and flavor imparted to a wine by the environment in which it is produced. Bordeaux is a very regulated wine region and I am a believer that you can taste their soils in the glass. Whether you are in the Left or the Right Bank, within the AOCs there are differences that present themselves in the glass. Join me as I learn more about the soils of Bordeaux in this seminar presented by Benchmark Wine. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, I’m thrilled to welcome a very special guest: Natalie MacLean. Natalie is not only a wine educator and critic but also the author of three fantastic books about wine. In this episode, we’ll dive into Natalie’s journey, the themes of her book, and the challenges of navigating a competitive industry while staying true to yourself. Plus, we’ll talk about how her experiences have shaped her perspective on wine, life, and everything in between. 02 Oct 2023 | Merlot - Give it a Go! | 01:01:52
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Happy October! You know what that means! All the pumpkin spice you can ever want but more importantly, it is #MerlotMe month! Today I am sitting down with Nick Goldschmidt of Goldschmidt Vineyards. Originally from New Zealand, Nick has worked in Australia and South America, but calls his home Sonoma, California. His devotion to Merlot is epic, and I absolutely love getting geeky with him over it. I know you are going to enjoy the conversation. (Plus Nick came up with the best Merlot slogan EVER! Merlot- Give it a Go!) If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. We do not plan on doing this, but we do ask you to support the podcast by leaving a review. 23 Sep 2024 | 1 Star Winery Reviews | 00:31:14
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! One of my favorite podcasts to listen to is Your Stupid Opinions hosted by two comedians James Pietragallo & Jimmie Whisman. The premise is that there are some pretty hysterical reviews out there and as I listen to the podcast, I really do laugh out loud. I thought that it would be interesting to see what people have to say about wineries. I figured it could be a series, if you guys all think its funny, and I would do different regions. I’m also looking for a co-host for this series, as I think it would be funnier to hear the response of another wine lover to these reviews. Today’s region is Napa. I hope you enjoy it! While you are listening, it would be greatly appreciated if you could take one minute to subscribe, rate and review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. 05 Dec 2022 | Cleo Pahlmeyer; Wayfarer Vineyard | 01:00:29
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Sometimes, the stars align and an accident happens that turns into a great opportunity. I had reached out to West Sonoma Coast AVA for some information and about 2 weeks later I received an email from Cleo Pahlmeyer. Although I knew who she was, I didn’t know why she was reaching out. As it turns out, there was some miscommunication with the AVA’s association, but it opened the door for this incredible fantastic interview about Cleo and Wayfarer Vineyard. Please take a moment to rate and review the podcast. Did you know you can do it right now, while you are listening? It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! It’s November and we it may not be Merlot Month anymore, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t show it some love. Today, I sit down with Michael Scholz of St. Supery Winery in Napa Valley. From Corsica to Napa; St. Supery leads the way in sustainability with being Napa Green Land certified since 2008. Their dedication to quality is represented in the 2018 Rutherford Estate Vineyard Merlot. Please take a moment of your time to rate and review the podcast. You can do it while you are listening. 22 Jul 2024 | Take 2: Live From the Bubble Lounge: Downtown Paso Robles Vibe Event | 00:29:22
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Bubbles Lounge Take 2! After dropping last week’s episode, I listened to it and the sound was not acceptable. I ended up removing it from the system. Some of the wineries’ voices were exceptionally low and trying to alter them made the overall sound distracting. So in this take, I decided to listen and decipher what they said. In some cases, you will hear the actual individual, while in others, I will summarize their answers. The event was part of the Downtown Vibe’s Bubble Lounge. The event brought together eight wineries located downtown who produce sparkling wine. Please note, it was recorded at a live event, so there is background noise and uneven sound. Enjoy as you listen to how the different wineries produce their sparkling wine. There are quite a variety of options. Today on the podcast, I am sharing my conversation with Gary Eberle of Eberle Winery in Paso Robles. Gary is truly an American Legend. He is the recipient of the 2020 Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award. He is almost single handedly responsible for the pioneering of Syrah here in the United States and is known as the godfather of Paso Robles. If visiting Paso, Eberle is a must stop, and more than likely, you will find Gary enjoying a glass of Viognier or Cabernet Sauvignon on the patio greeting customers. It was an honor to speak with Gary and I know you are going to enjoy the conversation. If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. It is my favorite day of the year! I find it amazing to think that eight years ago, I decided to create a holiday that was dedicated to the best grape varietal there is and today, the holiday is celebrated around the world. I will be hosting an X (formerly known as Twitter) chat tonight at 5pm Pacific and will be moderating a producers roundtable at 6pm Pacific. There is still time to register for the roundtable. It is free to attend and will provide you the opportunity to listen to producers who are fanatical about Cabernet Franc as well as ask them all your Cab Franc questions. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! The statistics all state the wine consumption is decreasing. According to Statista, wine consumption has dropped 6.75% since 2019 and the International Organization of Vine and Wine says that wine consumption has dropped 2.6% just this last year. In fact, global wine consumption has reached its lowest point since 1996. Enter the world of de-alcoholized wine. Fact.MR has predicted that non-alcohol wine will increase its market substantially in the next ten years; from 2.57 billion to 6.94 billion dollars. And in the forefront of this massive trend is Giesen Wines in New Zealand. I had the pleasure to sit down with Duncan Shouler, Director of Innovation to discuss the process and their goals for this line. 28 Aug 2023 | Crazy Woman Cellars; Chris Bennett in Downtown Wine District | 00:52:41
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, we return to downtown Paso Robles Wine District and I am in Crazy Woman Cellars talking with Chris Bennett. With a name like Crazy Woman, it can be misconstrued, but this is not a derogatory name, instead it is the complete opposite. The winery is dedicated to celebrating the countless women who changed history. If you visit Chris, you’ll notice the incredible mural and the numerous portraits of incredible women in history. You may not agree with what they stood for, but you can’t deny they were fierce. If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. We do not plan on doing this, but we do ask you to support the podcast by leaving a review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! The first week of July is officially International Sparkling Week. I never need a reason to pop a bottle of sparkling, but when it’s a wine holiday, it gives me an extra reason! In honor of the holiday week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Bryan Widstrand of Steinbeck Vineyards in Paso Robles. From the first time I tasted Bryan’s bubbles, I was in love. I can honestly say that he makes my favorite bubbles in town. I am always recommending people to head to Steinbeck and ask for Bryan’s bubbles. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation. 06 May 2024 | Talking White Malbec with Bodega Trivento | 01:02:59
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! One day a few months ago, I was walking through a wine shop looking for something a little different. As I perused the shelves, it was the same old supermarket wine after supermarket wine. I turned to leave and as if a light was shining down to catch my attention, there was a white malbec by Bodega Trivento. My winery, Dracaena Wines, now produces a white Cabernet Franc (Blanc de Franc) so of course my curiosity peaked! I picked up the bottle, took a photo and sent it to my husband and brought it home. After enjoying it, I reached out to Trivento to ask if I could speak with the winemaker and share our love of making a white wine from a red grape. If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. We do not plan on doing this, but we do ask you to support the podcast by leaving a review. It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, I am sharing an exciting conversation with some producers in Jumilla, Spain Jumilla DO is located in south eastern Spain and is a supra-autonomous region. This means that it spans across two separate regions; Castilla La Mancha and Murcia. The only other two DOs that have this qualification are Rioja and Cava. The winemakers here are dedicated to sustainable farming and although there are many varieties produced in the region, Monastrell is the Queen. Please take a moment to rate and review the podcast. 11 Dec 2023 | Nero d’Avola on Winephabet Street | 01:05:05
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It's time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Welcome back to Winephabet Street. Today the letter of the day is N and it stands for Nero d’Avola. Nero d'Avola is synonymous with Sicilian Wine. It is the most notable indigenous grape variety. Although originally produced as a bulk wine, the times began to change in the 1990s, where it became the king of grapes in the region. To the eye, Nero d'Avola is known to be inky, with a deep red hue. On the palate, it exudes blackberries, cherries, and plums with an undertone of spice. I’d like to thank our special guest and sponsor, Gaetana Jacono of Valle dell'Acate While you are listening, take a moment to subscribe, rate and review Exploring the Wine Glass. Taking one minute of your time is the only way the algorithms will suggest Exploring the Wine Glass to others and since you are enjoying the podcast, other winelovers will too! It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! If you are familiar with me or this podcast, you know how much I love Spanish wine. Today I am sharing a recording about the wines of Jumilla. The Great Spain Match was held at Little Spain in NYC. It was a perfect location to celebrate the wines of this supra-automous region. Although the majority of the wine is produced in the Murcia DO, vineyards are also found in Castile-La Mancha. The region experiences a continental climate with mediterranean influences and is located on the Altiplano range. The vineyards are up to 2600 ft. Do you believe it is November already?! 2023 sure has flown by. We just left Merlot Month and tomorrow we wrap up the celebrations with International Merlot Day. Join me in this light hearted episode with my buddy Nick Berube as we go through the wine dating game. I scoured the internet looking for Merlot wine reviews. I will read the reviews to Nick and he has to pick which one he’s taking home. Will he choose wisely? Please note that although we are poking fun at some wines, we will never wine guilt. Remember to drink what you like and don’t let anyone tell you a wine isn’t good. I’ll never tell you what to drink, but I’ll always share what’s in my glass. Today, I am sharing a Master Class on Cab Franc and Cab Franc Day. As the founder of Cab Franc Day, it always blows my mind when I see an event like this happening. Thanks to Neeta and Kunal Mittal of LXV in Paso Robles for putting together this incredible event. Thanks to Wes Hagen for his wonderful presentation celebrating the best grape variety! The event took place in a large barrel room, so I apologize upfront for the quality of the sound, but I hope you stick it out because there is great conversation and the comparative tasting is extremely educational. Please take a moment to rate and review the podcast. Did you know you can do it right now, while you are listening? New ratings and reviews are how the algorithms decide which podcasts they recommend to others and if you love the podcast, other wine lovers will too! Plus I have some exciting news, I was just mentioned in Forbes Magazine as a top 25 wine podcast to listen to. 10 Feb 2025 | Winery Reviews Gone Wrong: From Parking Lots to Burnt Rubber | 01:00:51
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, we’re diving into the wonderfully absurd world of one-star winery reviews—because nothing says “refined palate” like comparing a wine region to Chile with zero context. We kicked off our adventure in Temecula, where one review had us wondering if we missed the memo about a new wine-tasting trend… in a parking lot. We also stumbled upon what might just be the best owner response ever—pure gold. Then, we headed up to Livermore Valley, where a $30 bottle of wine was deemed highway robbery, and another review had us questioning if we were drinking wine or licking a burning Goodyear tire. Get ready for some laughs, some head-scratching moments, and maybe even a little sympathy for the wineries on the receiving end of these reviews. Grab a glass (hopefully not of rubber tire wine), and let’s get into it! While you are listening, it would be greatly appreciated if you could take one minute to subscribe, rate and review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. Also, please be sure to check the box for automatic downloads so that new episodes of Exploring the Wine Glass show up in your “next up feed.” The next best way to support Exploring the Wine Glass is to tell your friends. 12 Feb 2024 | Winery Buyouts.. Why are they Happening and are they Good for the Wine World | 01:07:08
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today on the podcast, I enjoyed a riveting conversation with some of my wine friends. In 2023, there were a lot of winery buyouts. It seemed like another smaller brand was being gobbled up by the big players such as Gallo or Treasury. We questioned if this was a good thing or a bad thing. Plus, what would we do in that situation? Would we give up our brand and if so, what would be done with all that money?! If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. We do not plan on doing this, but we do ask you to support the podcast by leaving a review. It takes only a few seconds of your time but means so much to the show. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you so much for following Exploring the Wine Glass. Today on the podcast,we return to Winephabet Street where the letter of the day is P and it stands for Petit Manseng. This is a new to me grape variety. I have heard of the grape, but had never had the opportunity to taste it. So I was excited to learn all about the variety from Lee Hartman of BlueStone Vineyards in Virgina. 29 Jan 2024 | Orange Muscat on Winephabet Street | 01:08:48
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today we return to Winephabet Street, where the letter of the day is O and it stands for Orange Muscat. Although the origins of Orange Muscat are not guaranteed, it is thought to be from Italy or France. It was once popular, but today it is not widely planted. For this episode, we went directly to the source. When you google Orange Muscat, Quady Winery is number one on the display. Andrew Quady purchased a plot of land in Reedly, CA in 1980 and is the authority on the variety. Listen, as we discuss his road to winemaking (not a typical one,) how he fell in love with the grape and how the wine is made. It’s a fun one! If you listen to a lot of podcasts, you know that many ask for patreon. We do not plan on doing this, but we do ask you to support the podcast by leaving a review. Today, the letter of the day is S and it stands for San Marco. Have you heard of this grape? This was a brand new variety to me and I was so intrigued to learn more and impressed once I tasted it. In fact, I took a bottle to a wine professional event and it was the hit of the evening! We had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Quarella and Larry Coia from Bellview Winery in New Jersey. These are the guys not only responsible for bringing the vines to the United States, but for naming the variety! 23 Jan 2023 | Hondarrabi Zuri on Winephabet Street | 01:16:30
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Today, we return to Winephabet Street, where the letter of the day is H. I was so excited for this episode. Anytime I can talk about a Spanish region or grape variety, I am happy! Which is one of the reasons why I decided to go through the Spanish Wine Scholar program. For the letter H, we chose Hondarrabi Zuri from the autonomous region Pais Vasco. Seen on a label as Txakoli, the white grape variety is a slightly sparkling, very dry white wine with high acidity and low alcohol. And who would we ask to be our guest? Of course Rick Fisher - The Spanish Wine Guy. Please take a moment to rate and review the podcast. Did you know you can do it right now, while you are listening? 13 May 2024 | Comparing California and Spanish Monastrell | 01:14:15
It’s Monday, Let’s raise a glass to the beginning of another week. It’s time to unscrew, uncork or saber a bottle and let’s begin Exploring the Wine Glass! Last week, I moderated a comparative wine tasting at Vin 13 in downtown Paso Robles. The comparative was between Paix Sur Terre, a local winery. The winemaker and owner Ryan Pease was presenting three of his wines. He, as do I, loves Spanish wines. Within his portfolio, he makes single varietal Mourvedre, Mataro and Monastrell. The tasting paired his three wines along with three Monastrells from Alicante, Spain. During the presentation, I provided some historical background on the variety, characteristics of the vines and clusters and general tasting notes. Together, Ryan and I compared and contrasted the six wines. I discussed the where the names came from and of course we talked about the infamous Graciano Goof of Paso. I hope you enjoy the seminar and if you would like to hire me to do a wine education program for you, even virtually, feel free to reach out on my website or on my social media channels.
