Bonjour - we’ve gone international! Oenone has moved to Paris for the spring (oooh la la!) so we’re coming to you from both sides of the channel today. We’ve got something a (tiny) bit different for you in this episode - the internet was set on fire last week by The Cut who published a personal essay about an age gap relationship, so we've decided to go DEEP diving into both the article itself, and our general perception of age gaps in relationships. We also celebrate on behalf of our US listeners - who have had Sex and The City drop in full on their Netflix this week. What are some of the most iconic moments and does the show have a Gen Z equivalent? 02 Aug 2024 | Ballerina Farm, Mamma Mia overcrowding & banned boyfriends | 00:49:25
Happy Olympics everyone! Despite knowing basically nothing about *actual* sport, we dive into some of our fave moments from the games so far. We also delve head first into the article that EVERYONE has been talking about this week - The Times piece about the influencer Ballerina Farm. Has this rightfully reignited the tradwife debate - or should we just leave her alone to raise her kids and milk her cows? We also want to know if you were at the open air screening of Mamma Mia that got cancelled in London last week - is recommendation culture ruining our experiences or is it just an effect of the economic crisis? 08 Aug 2024 | Far-right riots, Dallas cheerleaders and the return of smut | 00:51:00
This week on Everything Is Content, we thought it was about time to discuss the Netflix docu-series that everyone has been raving about for the last few weeks - America’s Sweethearts. Does the life of a cheerleader appeal to us - and does the documentary have a dark side? We also take a look at the return of smutty literature - why do we sometimes look down on the genre, and is it about time we read some? We also check in about how we’re feeling following the week of unrest in the UK. What role has social media played - and how can we look forward to positive solutions? We’re also talking about the rumoured BTS feud on It Ends With Us, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. Why is the internet taking sides and is there more to this than meets the eye? What are THOSE!? Oenone shares some troubling news about the return of heeled trainers... Once we spiritually recovered, we dived into Chappell Roan's frustration at "creepy" fans, to investigate what exactly do celebs owe us. Should we feel offended, or commend her for setting a boundary? We also speak about our favourite 30-something marketing hot-mess, Emily, who is still in Paris. Why do people hate her? And finally Beth wrote an opinion piece about moving out of London and in with her parents, and it pushed A LOT of people's buttons online. Her new novel What A Way To Go follows the death of very wealthy businessman Anthony Wistern at his own birthday party - what happened, why and who will be punished? Gorgeous babe Beth is ill this week, so Oenone and Ruchira steer the content ship into port. The pair dive into Netflix's new documentary starring funny-man Will Ferrell and his long-time bestie and collaborator, Harper Steele. The documentary makes for a tearful, moving examination of friendship, allyship, and what it means to be a trans woman in the US. Grab your tissues before watching! Next-up, Vogue dropped a new series starting with a day-in-the-life as actress, artist and it girl Jemima Kirke. At one point she writes that she's bought a kitten and is yet to deliver it to a friend. Why do we love knowing the unusual details of a celeb's life? And finally, a New Yorker piece takes a 360-view of a rising trend of people going 'no-contact' with their parents. Ruchira and Oenone discuss whether we can learn anything about how to navigate difficult family relationships from the piece, and if our views on family estrangement have changed after reading it. This week it’s our beloved Oenone’s turn to be ill- she was very missed but the show went on with Ruchira and Beth getting stuck into the debate about modern concert etiquette after a viral call out after a Chappell Roan gig. Are we forgetting how to behave at events or are times simply changing? Next up is Jamali Maddix’s documentary on so-called ‘passport bros’ who encourage young men to travel to South America to find better lives and better wives. A sinister male MLM in the making or just a passing fad- we discuss. And lastly The New York Times investigated a ‘Skinny Influencer’ after she was banned from TikTok for videos that some believe encourage disordered eating. Is this a move in the right direction or social media censorship? And why can't we escape the cult of thinness? 04 Oct 2024 | Intermezzo, thin characters & publishing unpacked | 01:01:27
It's Sally Rooney week here at Everything is Content! Beth, Ruchira and Oenone dive into their pop culture recommendations from the week, before plunging into the biggest literary event of the year: Sally Rooney's new novel Intermezzo. So, how good is it? The girls answer that core question, and dissect just how compelling her male characters are. The chat is fairly spoiler free, but do skip onto the next segment around the 30 minute mark if you want to be extra cautious. Next-up, discourse around Rooney and her mostly thin characters was firing up the timeline even before Intermezzo dropped. Just how justified are these arguments against the alleged "great millennial writer" of our time? Finally, what can we learn from Rooney's astonishing success when it comes to publishing at large? This week on the pod, Ruchira and Beth are taking The Substance! Taking it for a spin around the content playground, that is. We discuss whether Mubi’s latest film release is a feminist masterpiece, or just a mess of blood, guts and big fake boobs. Did we love it, hate it or rush out of the cinema retching before it was over? Listen to find out! Next up is the Kamala Harris x Call Her Daddy interview which saw the Vice President get stuck into women's issues with Gen Z podcasting powerhouse Alex Cooper. Genius masterstroke by a savvy Gen Z campaign team or potential PR disaster for everyone involved? Finally, we debate the age old internet question: should you be posting your partner on your social media or has Lana Del Rey done it right by keeping her relationship under wraps until she was halfway down the aisle? This week on pod, The Three Musketeers are back together. Beth, Ruchira and Oenone soldier through the battlefield of streaming services, why is it that Netflix loves to cancel shows in their infancy? We want to fight them! Kaos might not have reached number one on Netflix's charts, but it certainly has become beloved to everyone who has plunged their eyeballs into the reimagined Greek Mythology. The action centres around various prophecies, relationships and quests as Zeus tries to prevent the fall of his powerful family. It’s inventive, it’s sexy, it’s dramatic, it’s different. And now it’s done. Next up - how far are you willing to go for a good smile? A piece in the Guardian this week dives into the world of veneers, specifically why cosmetic dentistry is such a booming industry and what happens when the pursuit for perfect teeth goes horrifically wrong. It’s clear there’s a booming popularity in getting picture-perfect teeth, but would you go for veneers? Does it appeal to you? 25 Oct 2024 | Rivals, Respecting Liam Payne and Age Gaps 2.0 | 01:13:11
This week on the Podcast, Beth, Ruchira and Oenone discuss the devastating news that broke last week, that One Direction singer Liam Payne had died unexpectedly and tragically at the age of 31 in Argentina. We think most people have felt this is quite seismic, and wanted to look at how the coverage of this has seemed and felt so far, both in the papers and on social media. Is it time for there to be a reckoning with how we deal with celebrity death? You can skip to roughly 37 minutes if you want to skip this section. As a pop culture podcast we also had to cover this week's lighter stories, including the show of the moment we're all tuning in for, the BONKBUSTER that is Rivals. If you’re looking for a rollicking good romp in Rutshire, then look no further, Jilly Cooper’s 1988 novel has been adapted into a TV series, now streaming on Disney plus. 01 Nov 2024 | Spooky Faves, Gay Halloween and RIP Birth Rates | 00:47:13
BOO - Beth, Ruchira and Oenone are back to scare you with some scarily-astute analysis of pop culture in time for Halloween week. First, just how much do they love horror as a genre? From memories of sleepovers and scary-movies, to the recent rise of artistic horrors with social commentary i.e. Jordan Peele's 'Get Out', they dive into their changing relationship to jump-scares and frightening films. Also, listen to hear their best horror recommendations across literature, TV and film. A new meme has the internet in a chokehold. 'Gay Halloween' has radically changed the dressing-up landscape, with people boasting about their pop culture knowledge by donning the most obscure referential costume they can, so only the chronically online understand it. Is it fun or is it pretentious? Finally, we can't forget the real world is full of horrifying things including recent stats that show a significant decline in birth rates. Should women bear the brunt of this societal issue? Whose responsibility is it that we're moving towards an ageing population? 08 Nov 2024 | Literary Dilemmas, Influencer Coaching & Boys vs Girls | 01:02:49
Happy Friday (following the longest week of 2024). First up, artist and poet James Massiah has claimed that bestselling author Coco Mellors (Blue Sisters) brazenly based one of her characters on him. Beth, Ruchira and Oenone dig into the story and ask: just how much can artists borrow from real life, especially when inspiration comes from people around them? Also, would you sign up for an influencer academy? A New York Times feature dives into influencer Valeria Lipovetsky's new and exclusive scheme that promises to help budding influencers break into the industry. Is it a scam or a savvy business idea for everyone involved? And finally, a "global gender divide" is sweeping the world, as experts warn that more and more young men are voting right, as young women vote progressively. A political split is widening between the two everywhere from the UK, to South Korea and Tunisia. Are we f****d as a society? Thank you so much for listening to us. For the second time this week Beth, Ruchira and Oenone are in your ears talking all things pop culture. Elizabeth Banks stars as an aesthetician & skincare mogul whose life starts to wrinkle after being targeted on & offline. 5 stars or total wet flannel? Next up we're examining the charm of middlebrow movies- e.g. the films that don't break the box office or re-invent cinema but are perfectly good nonetheless. Where did they go and can we have them back before the Marvel and Mattel takeover is complete? Finally we're scrolling down under as Australia proposes plans to kick all kids off social media. 22 Nov 2024 | The Troubles, A Troubling Interview & The Metrics Of Sexiness | 00:49:54
Beth, Ruchira and Oenone have been watching, listening and reading... as always. This week, they've all been binging the new historical drama, Say Nothing. The new nine part Disney Plus show is an adaptation of Patrick Redden Keefe’s bestselling book of the same name. The book came out in 2018, the series just dropped last week. It follows closely to the narrative of the book, which was about the Troubles, the IRA, the provisional IRA and a now notorious woman at the centre of it all, Dolours Price. Next up, in an interview with Eva Wiseman for the Observer, actor and director Rebecca Hall says she doesn’t regret working with Woody Allen - a statement which unsurprisingly inspired many a headline. Shockingly, this wasn't the only viral moment of the piece, as Hall also detailed her unconventional wedding to husband and fellow actor Morgan Spector. And lastly, would you want a Sexiest Woman of The Year Award? Or is the men's one already bad enough? In a piece for Grazia titled '‘Sexiest Man Alive’: Here’s Why Lusting Over Men Is Different To Lusting Over Women', the writer Nikki Peach argues that the world is not yet evolved enough for this to happen. Do you agree? Thank you so much for listening - Please make sure you're following us both here on your podcast app and on Instagram & TikTok @everythingiscontentpod and if you fancy leaving us a rating or review... we heard 5 stars is nice this time of year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lucy Mangan, Say Nothing Review Rebecca Hall Observer Interview Rebecca Hall brutally mocked over wild wedding day remarks On People Magazine’s Sudden Interest in Black People for their “Sexiest Man Alive” Cover The confusing recent history of People’s Sexiest Man Alive ‘Sexiest Man Alive’: Here’s Why Lusting Over Men Is Different To Lusting Over Women People Went With Mass Appeal for Its ‘Sexiest Man’ Hosted on Acast. What is this feeling so sudden and new? Yes, Beth, Ruchira and Oenone saw Wicked and they're not afraid to report back. Welcome to a very special, very magical (and very juicy) Wicked episode. Listen to find out their review of the year's biggest blockbuster. There were lots of tears... from Cynthia and Ariana. How did the rollout for Wicked turn out so unhinged? Is this an example of theatre kid behaviour and unrestrained earnestness, or something darker? Also, could this set the new bar for what movie marketing looks like from now on? Say what you want but every minute of Wicked's BTS has gone viral. Thanks for listening to this week's episode. We especially adore those who tune in for our bonus eps, follow and rate us five stars. Ho-ho-how is it less than two weeks to Christmas already?! On this most jolly Friday the 13th, join Beth, Ruchira and Oenone for a look at Sabrina Carpenter's Christmas special (now airing on Netflix). What were our fav bits and do we think SC could be ready to ascend to Mariah Carey levels of December Diva-hood? Also this week- a film about a harried mother who thinks she's turning into a dog. Adapted from the 2021 bestselling book of the same name, Nightbitch explores femininity, rage, marriage and parenting without a pack. We give our thoughts and share what the reviews are saying. Finally- one of the weirdest weeks online for a while. After the murder of a healthcare insurance CEO in New York, the internet is thirsting openly, unabashedly and without shame over his accused killer. It's the penultimate episode of Everything is Content for 2024! Sadly Beth was travelling this week, so Oenone and Ruchira lead this very special extra episode. This week, the girls are in conversation with *the Emma Appleton*. You might know her as the lead from Dolly Alderton’s BBC adaptation of her memoir, Everything I Know About Love, but she’s now leading Paramount’s new rom-com series The Road Trip, based on the book of the same name by bestselling author Beth O’Leary. The six part series starts with a wedding trip to Spain which takes an unexpected turn for Addie (played by Emma) and her sister Deb, when they're forced to share a campervan with Addie's ex Dylan, his friend Marcus, and a stranger Rodney.
Here at EIC headquarters we can confirm the series is a gorgeous look at relationships in your 20s, navigating life and what happens when it all goes wrong. The Road Trip will be available to stream on Paramount+ from 26th December 2024. You can follow Emma on instagram @emmajappleton. Happy new year and welcome back to Everything is Content! We hope you’ve missed this as much as we have (e.g. extremely, enormously and a lot). In our first episode of 2025 we’re setting our intentions for the year to come- one of us wants to go up a big hill, one of us wants to get bendy and one of us wants a full rebrand. We also discuss our relationships to reinvention and ask: is it toxic to say no to rotting in bed? Next up: the agony of texting men. Is text-debt a real thing or are we over-reliant on texting as a replacement for in-person friendship and connection? Aaaaand finally we’re looking at the latest legal drama in Hollywood as the Lively vs. Baldoni vs. NYTimes cases pick up momentum. Why are we so quick to criticise famous women and can these witch hunts and PR smear campaigns finally end with us? As ever thank you for listening! Yes, we're talking about The Cut's Lilly Jay essay. For anyone who doesn't know, last year stories of an alleged affair circulated around Ariana Grande and her Wicked co-star Ethan Slater. The pair soon went official, and his ex-wife Lilly Jay gained attention as a result. In the famous words of Rebecca Black: "it's Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday!" And we're back with a brand new episode of Everything Is Content! This week we're drinking UP the Babygirl discourse like a tall glass of milk. Were we intolerant to the film, or lapping it up and asking for more? Also, there's drama in the romantasy world and it doesn't involve magical creatures, but rather humans and accusations of plagiarism. Just how unique are the themes and tropes of the genre? And finally, let's sit down around the round table to discuss the only show truly *giving* right now. Yes, The Traitors. 22 Jan 2025 | Everything In Conversation: Are We Work-Shy? | 00:34:56
Happy Wednesday, or unhappy Wednesday, it's been a weird week. Here at the EIC newsroom, we will fill you in - welcome to Everything In Conversation. This week on the extra episode, we discuss BrewDog founder James Watt's approach to work/life balance... which is to not have one. He came under fire after he shared a video of him and his fiancé, Georgia Toffolo, where he says, ‘so I just think the whole concept of work life balance was invented by people who hate the work that they do’, to which Georgia replies ‘it’s so true’. After he received a huge amount of backlash, including unacceptable threats of violence, as well as lots of more balanced takes, Watt asked on LinkedIn, “What does it say about our society that a post extolling the virtues of hard work gets met with this kind of furious backlash?” calling it a “bizarre controversy”. He said: “As a nation, we love to joke about the French being lazy, but the reality is that our output per hour is 13 per cent lower than theirs." James Watt is worth an estimated 262 million pounds at present, and has also previously been accused of presiding over a “toxic” culture. Beth, Ruchira and Oenone rummage around in the mess, and with help from the listeners, try to answer the question, is The UK workforce, work-shy? Hosted on Acast. 31 Jan 2025 | Loud Luxury, Crying On The Internet & Spying On Each Other | 00:52:11
TGIF and TGIEICD (thank god it's Everything Is Content Day... is this gonna catch on?) This week, Beth, Ruchira and Oenone dip their toe in the fashion discourse, if 2025 Haute Couture is anything to go by, then quiet luxury and stealth wealth might be being booted out for loud luxury, extravagance and labels, sorry Sofia Richie Grainge! Next up, Selena Gomez posted a tearful video on Instagram Stories on Monday, before quickly deleting the post. In the video, she responded to the US' nationwide immigration raids over the weekend, which saw the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest 956 people on Sunday — the largest number of arrests on a single day under Trump. He announced several extreme executive orders on immigration from his first day. US Senate candidate Sam Parker called to 'deport Selena Gomez' on X, while the left basically called her self-involved. They ask, why do you think we’re so cynical of emotional outbursts online? And last but by no means least, is society shifting now towards intentional and consensual round the clock tracking? Beth found a fascinating piece called “We are all Big Brother now: The largest system of surveillance isn’t run by the government or corporations. It’s the grass-roots panopticon we’re using to judge one another.” It was written by Alan Levinovitz, and published in the Boston Globe last June. 05 Feb 2025 | Everything in Conversation: Lola Young And The Hunt For Nepo Babies | 00:32:16
Happy hump day EIC heads! As a reward for making it halfway to the weekend here’s a brand spanking episode of Everything In Conversation for you- and it’s a doozy. This week we’re discussing a new branch of the nepo baby discourse that sprouted after 24-year-old singer and Messy internet sensation Lola Young was “outed” as being the niece of mega-successful children’s author Julia Donaldson (e.g. the creator of The Gruffalo). This revelation sparked conversations online about whether this connection was enough to open doors, if we even should be labelling Young a nepo baby, and what having a rich or high profile relative can mean when navigating a career in the arts. Armed with a pile of brilliant listener messages we try to find some answers, as well as getting stuck into the complications of the UK class system, code-switching, the sexism inherent in the term nepo baby and what we think we should all actually be talking about instead. Thanks so much for listening and/or taking part in this In Conversation episode. If you want to be a part of next week’s discussion just follow us on IG @everythingiscontentpod. 07 Feb 2025 | Bianca Uncensori, Amandaland & Doechii | 01:00:50
It's TIIIIIMEEEEE for Everything Is Content - Happy Friday EIC heads, we did it, another week bites the dust. As HUGE Motherland fans, we were eagerly anticipating the new BBC spin off Amandaland. The sitcom, produced by another love of our life, Sharon Horgan, follows Amanda (the leader of the alpha-mum’s from the original show, with her perfectly blow-dried blonde hair, insufferable lack of self-awareness and yet somehow endearing charm) who is now divorced and has re-located from Chiswick to South Harlesden with her teenagers. She deals with modern motherhood horrors like teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts and eco-anxiety, as well as establishing herself as an interiors influencer with her new business ‘sensuous’. Joanna Lumley, who plays Felicity, Amanda’s mother, is her best self as an ab-fab-esque ex model. The show has ginormous boots to fill, so we ask, has it lived up to the hype? Next up - this year's Grammys... Two people who apparently did not stay long enough to enjoy themselves were Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, and his wife Bianca Censori, who showed up, stood for photos and then were apparently- if rumours are to be believed- asked to leave the ceremony following Bianca’s outfit reveal. We discuss our reaction to her fit - or lack there of - and ask whether this is a sign of something horrible and sinister happening in front of our eyes, or if it’s just a display from two people who are equally invested in giving us all a good show. Lastly, one of the more gorgeous moments from the Grammy’s, was Tampa rapper Doechii getting her well-deserved flowers, winning best rap album and in the process becoming one of three women to win the award. We discuss her beautiful speech, her sensational lyricism, and why we are so pleased to have her in our ears. Aaaand, if you're happy to have us in your ears... a 5* review wherever you listen would mean the world, Thank you so much in advance <3

14 Feb 2025 | Porn - A Deep Dive (Part One) | 01:01:36
Happy Valentines Day - as a special treat, we've got a double deep dive for you - Everything Is Content, and some things, are Adult Content. This week on the podcast we’re delving into the world of OnlyFans and digital sex work for part one of our two-part Porn series. In this instalment we are going to be talking about sexy subscription services, the Lily Phillips documentary and Bonnie Blue’s banned OnlyFans video. So possibly more than anything else in the history of the pod, we have been asked by you at home, to talk about OnlyFans- the London based subscription service for content creators that has seen global success and cultural notoriety since it was founded 9 years ago, becoming especially popular with adult performers and sex workers producing pornography and selling other digital sexual services. We discuss a Substack by the very popular writer, creator, PHD candidate, and podcaster Maalvika Bhat, titled “What OnlyFans Billions reveal about the market value of male desire”, and ask, do we think some men might resent the freedom that OnlyFans allows women in terms of monetising sexuality? Why do women get so much of the “blame” for OF’s popularity when it’s men who are the biggest customer base? Can a site like OF alter desire on a broad scale? Are we maybe even seeing this happen? We then go on to discuss 23 year old Lily Phillips and her documentary with Josh Pieters, as well as another key figure in this conversation, Bonnie Blue, a 25-year-old sex worker and content creator who became even more famous for claiming to have slept with 1,057 men in 12 hours. Tune in next week for part-two, where we will be looking at the consumers of porn, the dangerous misuse of it, and whether or not it can ever, truly, be ethical. In our first Everything In Conversation of 2025 we’re talking to thee Shon Faye- brilliant author, writer and journalist. Shon’s first book The Transgender Issue was a bestseller and her new non-fiction Love in Exile is already one of our favourite reads of this year. Exploring both her own experiences of love, heartbreak and feelings of unworthiness as well as the problems and challenges of modern love from multiple angles, this is a book for anyone in love, out of love, wanting to understand love and romance in new and radical ways. In our chat Shon talked about romcoms, break-ups, community, addiction, different ways of mothering and what she’s learned about the history of love. She's funny, she's brilliant and we can't wait for you to listen. Follow Shon on Instagram @shon.faye and pick up your copy of Love In Exile here or in any good book shop! 21 Feb 2025 | Porn - A Deep Dive (Part Two) | 00:56:33
Happy Friday! Last week we dropped the first part of our EIC special on porn, looking at the creators and platforms taking over the industry. This week our (highly anticipated) second part looks at the people behind the screens: the consumers. First up, why is porn addiction such a divisive topic among academics? And does it even exist? We answer that question and look at the deeper issues contributing to widespread compulsive porn-use. Next, we look at the rise of non-consensual user-generated porn i.e. deepfakes and revenge porn, and the fact young people are accessing this content. Finally, ethical porn has promised to right the wrongs of an often exploitative, discriminatory industry. Just how true is this, and can porn ever ethically be consumed? Happy Hump Day EIC heads - we've got another author special for you! Our beloved Beth is ill, so she’s resting up, but Ruchira & Oenone are holding the fort and they’ve got an amazing interview for you with debut novelist Dr Nussaibah Younis. Nussaibah is a peace-building practitioner and a globally recognised expert on contemporary Iraq, and even advised the Iraqi government on humanitarian issues. We are talking to her about her debut novel Fundamentally, a book we all adored FYI, and Stylist’s debut book of the year, which is out now. 'A wickedly funny and audacious debut novel following an academic who flees from heartbreak and lands in Iraq with an insane job offer—only to be forced to do the work of confronting herself.' 28 Feb 2025 | White Lotus & Bridget Jones | 00:55:55
Happy Friday and even happier Everything Is Content day! This week the pod is missing our beloved Ruchira (on hols) but are determined to put on a good and- frankly chaotic- show until she’s back in our arms. First up we talk about everyone’s favourite luxury murder show White Lotus. Who are we loving, hating and hoping ends up dead by the end? Plus- is this latest series a familiar high-end hotel romp or a little too much of what we’ve seen before? Then we get firmly stuck into the latest Bridget Jones instalment. Which of us cried the most? Who got more drunk? What did we think of Mark Darcy’s demise? Which hunk did we want her to end up with? And is Bridget Jones a feminist hero, a self-hating hack or a secret third option? Listen to find out! We hope you like (love) this episode just the way it is and if so… why not leave us a 5* rating and/or tell the world about us on social media? It's another highly requested Everything In Conversation! This time we're diving into the discourse surrounding actor Millie Bobby Brown, after she was highly criticised for 'looking old'. 14 Mar 2025 | Millennial Nostalgia, The Female Manosphere & A Women's Only Gym | 01:11:31
Happy Everything Is Content day & Happy Friday! Ruchira is back from her holiday... We're SO back... but we're also so sorry to tell you that we’re now old enough that Gen Z are romanticising the 2010s. After years of us Millennials being an absolute joke to them, they’re now craving a life of Buzzfeed, hipster myspace and American Apparel disco pants. We ask what it is about Millennial culture that is so cringe, but also, somehow better than whatever is going on right now. Next up, women in male dominated fields! Beth found a really interesting article on the website Semafor by Max Tani called “Young conservative women build an alternative to the manosphere.” And in the piece Tani explores several key female right wing creators who are now building empires and audiences in a way that feels very new and separate to the existing right wing media, which has historically been very male-dominated, often headed by controversial middle aged men who focus on recruiting young men into the fold and tend to espouse really misogynistic views that aren’t particularly appealing to women anywhere on the political spectrum. Was it only a matter of time before we got a femosphere? And lastly, our timelines have been absolutely ablaze this week after Natalee Barnett, founder of the women's only gym, The Girls Spot, went back on her 2021 statement that her gym would be inclusive of trans women. 19 Mar 2025 | Everything In Conversation: Mel Robbins' 'Let Them Theory' | 00:48:05
Hello EIC-heads, happy Wednesday... let's chat! One two-word phrase has blown up on the internet in the past year - let them. Its creator, Mel Robbins, is a popular motivational speaker and self-help figure. In 2023, she posted a tiktok on the theory, which now has 20m views and an instagram post where she said 'I’ve just learnt about this thing called the ‘let them theory’. The Cut’s review of the book makes a really good point for why ‘let them’ resonates with our times - ‘One is that it’s catchy and sounds easy to do. Another, more depressing hypothesis: Let Them Theory appeals to passive resignation, placing all real power outside our control. Let Them is easily adopted by people who want to do what they were already going to do while pretending their actions don’t really matter, because change is impossible and we’ve already lost.' She’s also been criticised for not crediting the poet Cassie B Phillips, whose poem Let Them went viral in 2022 - i.e. a year before Mel’s viral post on it. Cassie has spoken out about the situation on a number of occasions, and believes she’s been plagarised. She’s even drawn parallels between the theory and her poem, which has lines like ‘let them lose you. You were never theirs’ and ‘trying to control any outcome regarding their decision is a waste of time. Just let them be, and let them do it on their own.’ So if you will let us, let's get into it ;) As always we'd love to hear your thoughts! 21 Mar 2025 | Adolescence, Severance & Fatphobic Filters | 00:54:54
Congratulations – you've made it through the week. Your gift is a brand new EIC episode! Everyone has (rightly) been floored by Netflix's latest drama tackling misogyny, online bullying and radicalisation. Adolescence has been praised as 'flawless' TV. Is four episodes enough to explore such a rich issue? And are the right characters platformed in this story? Severance stans – you've waited long enough. We finally clocked in for our Severance shift, and dissected the much-loved Apple TV thriller, and its second series. Meanwhile, if things weren't dark enough in pop culture, IRL fatphobic TikTok filters have been gaining in popularity. But how did we get here... again? The blatant cruelty is galling. 26 Mar 2025 | Everything In Conversation: Modern Masculinity & Morning Routines | 00:28:22
It's Wednesday- let's talk. This week we chatted with you about the now infamous and highly-memed morning routine of American fitness influencer Ashton Hall, which included multiple ice dunkings, healthy food prepared by female staff, some mid-air hovering and a lot of alone time. With over 2.93 million subscribers on YouTube and 4.7 million followers on TikTok (at time of recording), he’s in the ears and eyes and minds of many modern men. What we want to know- and try to figure out- is if this is a new and healthier frontier of manliness or something more insidious How has something that would have been relentlessly mocked a decade ago now the epitome of high value and peak performance? As always we loved being in conversation with you! It's Wednesday, which can only mean one thing... we've got to have a chat! There always used to be a sort of joke about how when we're asleep it is the only time we're not conforming to patriarchal beauty standards, when we’re free from being advertised to and commodified, only now the billion-dollar beauty and wellness industry has managed to infiltrate that, too. Women of the internet are sharing their 'morning shed' where they remove various layers of skin-care products and anti-ageing aids. 18 Apr 2025 | Black Mirror, Blue Origin & Too Hot To Work | 01:05:37
Happy Friday, happy Good Friday, happy Easter & happy Everything Is Content Day! This week on the podcast we’re talking about Black Mirror season 7, The celestial sisters who went to space, & ask whether or not you can be too hot to work. Charlie Brooker’s dystopian tech anthology Black Mirror is back for its seven series, and lots of the reviews have been really positive saying it’s one of the most human series yet, and a return to its best form i.e. its first season. This one is star-studded, with Chris O’Dowd, Tracey Ellis Ross, Issa ray, Emma Corrin, Rashida Jones and Paul Giamatti to truly only name a few. Next up, in what sounds like an episode of Black Mirror but isn't... Katy Perry went to space… for eleven minutes. She was joined by Bezos's fiancée Lauren Sánchez and CBS presenter Gayle King, who was reported to have said a highlight of the flight was hearing Perry sing Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World'. We discuss. And finally, we are talking about t-shirts. Okay, not quite. We’re talking about a debate which was sparked on X, in part, by pictures of two t-shirts. Here’s what happened- on April 8th the writer Ashley Reese tweeted this as part of a wider conversation about women and work. She wrote: “1) women have always worked 2) it's incredible that women are able to be financially independent in ways that were not as common just a few generations ago and I'm not charmed by jokes—especially from other women—about how gainful employment is the worst thing to happen to women.” Is it that deep? Or is it just some silly t-shirts? Listen to find out! It's conversation day! This week, we’re discussing All Fours by Miranda July, so just to flag, this episode will contain spoilers, so if you’re planning on reading the book and don’t want to know what happens, maybe bank this episode for a future listen. Despite a great critical reception, the novel has certainly been divisive among readers, and most definitely in our DMs. The novel follows a 45-year-old perimenopausal woman who, after having an extramarital affair during a road trip, has a sexual awakening. It covers themes that we often love to discuss on the podcast, such as relationships, motherhood, aging, mortality, desire, intimacy, identity and ultimately, the meaning of life. We hope you enjoy this special book club episode - please do slide into our dms with any other books you'd love us to feature + talk about.
