As a runner, we want to be the best version of ourselves that we can be.

For me, that was drinking and taking Adderall; two things that I've been sober from for years. And in this episode, I share my journey on how I did it.

I also talk about how you can break limiting beliefs, how to live the life that you want to, and how to destroy bad habits in a sustainable way, so that you can be the best runner and person you can be.

This is an episode from the Juniper Lab Podcast, which I totally suggest every one check out.

Thank you to Juniper Lab for having me on the show!

14 Jan 2023JP Giblin on How to Build Self-Belief in Your Running and Racing01:15:12

When you set big running goals, it not only takes a ton of physical training to accomplish those goals; but it also takes tons of mental training as well. And the most important mental training you can do to help you hit your goals is cultivating a bulletproof sense of self-belief.

And that is exactly what today’s guest has mastered over the past year every time he’s toed the line at an ultra. Especially after his most recent Golden Ticket win at Bandera 100k 2023.

In this episode, we chat with JP Giblin who is an ultra runner based out of Boulder, CO. JP most recently placed in 2nd at the Bandera 100k in Texas, securing a Golden Ticket to get him into Western States, which was a huge goal of his throughout the past year.

On top of his impressive finish at Bandera, he’s also placed 2nd at the legendary Leadville 100 (only a week after doing a 100 mile mountain bike race!), 13th at the Canyons 100k, 3rd at the McDowell Mountain Frenzy, and 2nd in the Silver Rush 50 miler.

And one of his biggest keys to success along the way has been his ability to cultivate deep-self belief and harness the mindset of a true winner when it comes to racing an ultra.

You’ll hear JP share an inspirational breakdown of his epic Golden Ticket win at Bandera 100, practical tips that he uses to cultivate self-belief and determination out on a race, and how to solve problems and bust imposter syndrome as a runner.

Huge thank you to JP Giblin for coming on the show!

26 Sep 2024How to Prevent Muscular Breakdown in an Ultramarathon to Run Stronger for Longer01:01:41

What if your legs were able to run for longer periods of time before getting tired, sore, or fatigued?

That'd be pretty awesome. Because that would mean you'd be able to perform better, run faster, and likely get the results you're looking for in your next ultra.

But the problem is that a lot of runners don't set their legs up for success in their training to be durable. And even if they do the right things, they do it in a way that leads to injury, overuse, or underrecovery.

That's why in this episode, I'll break down how you can set up your training to increase durability, prevent muscular breakdown, and run stronger for longer.

Thank you so much for listening to the show!

28 Feb 2024The Running Mental Shift to Achieve any Ultrarunning Goal or Running Goal01:02:55

Even if you follow the best training plan for your next ultra, our minds can work against us to fall short of our running goal.

But there is a way to take control of your mind so that it works FOR you as opposed to AGAINST you. And all it takes is one mindset shift to completely put that into practice.

And when you develop this mindset shift, it will allow you to achieve any ultrarunning goal you set yourself towards. And yes, it sounds like it’s clickbait, but I credit this mindset shift to a majority of the progress I’ve made in my ultrarunning career.

And this episode will share with you that exact mindset shift and action items on how to implement it in your daily lifestyle.

So whatever big goal you have as an ultrarunner, this will be the episode that will show you how to do it!

In this, we cover why our brains tend to limit us, what the most powerful belief to have as an ultrarunner is, how to destroy negative thinking, and how you can make a plan to achieve any goal you set your mind to as an ultrarunner.

Huge thank you for listening to the show!

19 May 2022Ultra Training Tips from a Golden Ticket Winner with Adam Peterman00:59:53

One of the toughest accomplishments to achieve in ultrarunning is securing a Golden Ticket spot to Western States 100 by placing in the top 2 of the Canyons 100K race. And today’s guest recently accomplished that feat, even though the race was only his first 100K ever!

Adam Peterman is a HOKA athlete who has been taking the ultrarunning world by storm over the last few years in his early career. He won the JFK 50 miler in 2021, nearly breaking a seemingly unreachable course record. And in this year, he took first place at the Canyons 100K race to secure his spot at Western States 100, where he will no doubt be a top contender to look out for in an already stacked field.

And in this episode, we dive into Adam’s approach to training and preparation for big races, how he tackles negative thoughts during the middle of a race or on training runs, and what he’s focusing on going into Western States 100.

19 Jan 2023Bryce Brooks on How to Balance Training Hard and Having Fun in Running01:11:02

Training for an ultra marathon takes a ton of work. But just because it takes a ton of work doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and can’t enjoy the process along the way. And our guest today lives by that philosophy, as he is an incredibly talented runner who takes the podium often; but still has an absolute blast whenever he’s training for his next race.

Today, we’re chatting with Bryce Brooks! Bryce is an ultraruner based out of Phoenix, AZ and is also on the marketing team at Aravaipa Running. He has taken ton of podium and top finishes at Arizona races, most recently taking two wins and one third place finish at the winter DRT series run by Aravaipa.

Bryce has also completed the entire Arizona Trail, which is an incredible accomplishment on its own!

But even though Bryce is super speedy and can race well, he also has tons of fun in his training! That means grabbing tons of local crowns on Strava segments on the area, or throwing in a few extra races in his schedule to add some excitement into the mix. And all of this leads to Bryce not only performing well; but also, building a running lifestyle that is best fit for him!

In this episode, Bryce shares his perspective on the value of putting yourself in a ton of races to gain experience, how he has been able to make tons of progress in his running in only a short time in the sport, and his biggest lessons he’s learned throughout his many training runs and races.

10 Aug 2022Adam Peterman on Winning Western States 100 and His Keys to Success01:14:41

Adam Peterman took the ultra running world by storm when he became the new champion of the legendary Western States 100 race this past June, adding to his already impressive resume in the running world.

Having won every single ultra he’s participated in, HOKA athlete Adam Peterman has solidified himself as one of the best athletes in the ultra running sport to date. Not only did he win Western States (which was his first 100 miler ever to make things even more impressive), he also won the Canyons 100k, the JFK 50 miler, and the Speedgoat 50k by breaking Jim Walmsley’s seemingly unreachable course record. All back-to-back-to-back. The dude is on such a hot streak!

In this episode, I joined Adam in his hometown of Missolua, Montana where he recapped his entire Western States experience, along with his biggest takeaways of what led to his success during his epic win.

Adam covers it all in this episode: from incredible race stories at Western, to training tips and strategies, to mindset and the mental game; it’s all in this episode. And it’s definitely my favorite episode that we’ve done to date.

This is also Adam’s second appearance on the Everyday Ultra podcast - so if you’re interested in learning more about his background and training philosophy, feel free to tune in to the episode we did with him earlier in the year!

Huge thank you to Adam Peterman for making this interview happen! He is one of the kindest dudes I’ve met in the ultra community and such an awesome friend.

03 Mar 2023The Trail Team: Insights from Top Rising Athletes in Trail Running01:11:32

When it comes to entering the sport of trail running, there is no “by the book” path that is clear on how to best approach it. While Track & Field and road running have that clearer path, trail is something that seems like it has been more of a “figure it out” operation for those who want to develop a career in the sport.

That is why Andy Wacker, professional runner for Salomon, decided to create The Trail Team; a team designed independently support and develop rising athletes into the best professional trail runners in the world through mentorship, skill development, and media exposure.

On the trail team, there are 6 rising athletes who are all names destined to become some of the top names in the sport of trail running over the years. And on this episode, we feature three of those athletes, along with Andy Wacker.

And in this episode, the athletes share about their background, why it’s important for them to have a cross-athlete lifestyle throughout the program, and their best advice for those who want to pursue trail running.

On top of that, Andy also shares the details about the Trail team, how he plans to run the program, and the why behind the organization.

About the athletes featured:

Anna Gibson is a collegiate athlete who runs for the University of Washington, where she anchored her team's Distance Medley Relay to the NCAA record. On the track she specializes in the 800m, 1500m and mile. She placed 5th at her first US Mountain Championships in 2021. Last year, she placed 4th at her first World Cup event in Saint Gervais, France. She aspires to compete professionally on the track and in the mountains.

Christian Allen is a runner who currently runs for BYU and is a WSU alumni as well. He is a two-time All-American in Cross Country. Christian attended both Weber State and Brigham Young University. Christian holds track personal bests of 28:26 in the 10,000m and 13:34 in the 5,000m. Christian AKA Slim, is looking forward to hitting the trail circuit this summer, specifically, “the suffer fest of hammering grueling climbs”.

Meikael Beaudoin-Rousseau is a runner for Stanford University, which he represented in four NCAA Cross Country Championships. In 2019, he raced internationally for the US at the U20 World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. His first trail race was the 2021 USATF Mountain Running Championship in which he placed 7th. In his free time, he enjoys climbing and mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada, where he holds a number of speed records (FKTs).

Huge thank you to Andy, Anna, Christian, and Meikael for coming on the show!

05 Mar 2025How to Gain Mental Toughness and Increase Running Performance with Alyssa Clark01:11:28

Every runner deals with mentally struggling and that barrier when in a race. Alyssa Clark shares her insights on the mental and physical aspects of ultra running, emphasizing the importance of bravery, self-belief, and community support. She highlights how mental barriers are just voices that can be overcome and how true winning is about personal growth, not just podium finishes.

Alyssa discusses the significance of consistency in training, noting that building an aerobic base takes years of dedication. She stresses the importance of patience in endurance training and warns against racing too frequently, as it can hinder long-term progress. Instead, selecting key races and optimizing workouts leads to better performance.

To navigate tough moments, Alyssa relies on her mantra, "This is what winning feels like," and encourages runners to find joy in the process to sustain long-term success. She also highlights the value of a strong support team and having interests outside of running to maintain overall happiness.

Ultimately, Alyssa’s message is about balance—embracing the highs and lows of running, taking breaks when needed, and maintaining passion to avoid burnout. Whether a beginner or a seasoned runner, her wisdom offers valuable lessons for anyone looking to improve their performance and enjoyment in the sport.

Huge Thank you to Alyssa for coming on the show!

19 Apr 2022How to Dominate Your Next Endurance Challenge with Robbie Balenger00:41:20

Sometimes, it takes more than an organized ultra race to push our limits. And that means finding ways to set our own challenges to really see what we’re made of.

For today’s guest, that means running across America, completing the Colorado Crush (running the Leadville Marathon, Leadville 50 miler, Leadville 100, running the entire Colorado Trail, and climbing every 14er in Colorado in a span of ONLY a few months), and running farther than how far a Tesla can go on full-charge. Robbie Ballenger is the man who has completed all of those challenges.

Robbie Balenger is an ultra-endurance athlete who has completed multiple feats of physical and mental accomplishment during his athletic career, and is a world record holder. He is well-known for completing these challenges all on a plant-based diet, and through an innovative sleep technology called NuCalm.

And on top of that, he has a mindset and drive like no other, always trying to find the edge of his limits, and then looking to see how he can break through them.

Robbie has also been featured on the Rich Roll Podcast, and The Bare Performance Podcast.

In this episode, Robbie talks about the real secrets to his incredible endurance accomplishment, tips that anyone can use to complete their own endurance challenges, and why a plant-based diet and NuCalm has been so crucial to his success.

15 Sep 2022Jeff Garmire on Breaking the John Muir Trail Unsupported FKT01:00:07

The John Muir Trail is known as one of the most brutal FKTs on a thru-hike to nab in the United States; especially if you’re going for the fastest known time on that trail. It’s short enough to need speed. But the terrain and elevation gain is tough enough to challenge even the most seasoned thru-hiker.

So, when Jeff Garmire ventured out to break the unsupported FKT for the JMT, he knew he was in for a challenge. But despite the difficulty of it all, Jeff got it done and secured the FKT in 3 days, 47 minutes, and 56 seconds.

Jeff Garmire is one of the most accomplished thru-hikers of all time, having over 15 FKTs under his belt, including ones on the Arizona Trail, Colorado Trail, Long Trail, and now, the JMT. He has also completed the Calender Year Triple Crown, which consists of completing the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail all in one calendar year.

He is also the author of the book, Free Outside, which chronicles his Calendar Year Triple Crown Journey.

In this episode, Jeff breaks down the details, stories, and challenges he faced on his JMT unsupported FKT. Plus, he shares how he was able to get over the mental challenges that came from starting and completing the challenge. And he shares the importance of doing big challenges that scare the heck out of you.

This is an episode you do not want to miss!

Jeff is also coming out with a new film called Free Outside, which documents his unsupported FKT of the Colorado Trail in an epic production that captures the challenge in a way where no unsupported FKT has been documented before.

21 Feb 2023Black Canyon 100K Lessons, Reflections and Recap 01:44:33

I raced the Black Canyon 100K this past Saturday, and boy, did I learn a lot! Although the race was incredibly fun, the day did not go the way I wanted it to go; but the lessons I gained from my experience were some of the best takeaways that I’ve learned in any ultra so far.

In this episode, I break down the play-by-play of my Black Canyon 100K race, the lessons and takeaways I learned from my race, and suggestions for anyone who is looking to take on their next ultra (regardless of whether or not it is the Black Canyon 100K).

I did end up finishing the race, but placed in 29th male, well short of my goal of going after a Golden Ticket. And I hope this episode helps to give you into a look at what factors go into NOT having a great day (so that you CAN have a great day the next time you take on your ultra).

If you’d like to look into my training going into Black Canyon 100K, feel free to listen in to part 1 of our preview episode that we did before the race here: https://anchor.fm/everyday-ultra/episodes/Black-Canyon-100K-Training--Strategy-and-Course-Tips-2023-Preview---Part-1-e1uug79

She also devotes herself to her other passion, environmentalism, and has worked with the United Nations on campaigns related to climate change and humanitarian affairs.
