Every Musical Ever is recorded primarily on Gadigal land, and from time to time on the land of other Aboriginal peoples across the place we now call Australia. This land was never ceded by its traditional custodians, but was taken through violence, criminality, and other human rights abuses of the worst kind. The atrocities of colonialism are an unresolved injustice in need of redress. We support the goals of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, and call for the urgent implementation of the reforms it sets out as a starting point for the reparation of wrongs done to First Nations people, both historically and through to the present day. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

30 Jul 2017Gypsy (with Tom Sharah)01:07:09

31 Oct 2017West Side Story (with Julia Zemiro)01:13:18

Richard Carroll is joined by the fabulous, hilarious, knowledgeable, and bi-lingual (but not in Spanish) Julia Zemiro to discuss West Side Story. One of the most famous and influential musicals of all time, West Side Story brought together some of the giants of the genre - Jerome Robbins, Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. Based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, the musical broke new ground in its subject matter, and its use of integrated choreography to advance storytelling in ways never seen before.

Richard and Julia go through the creation of the show, memorable productions through history, and the movie adaptation - as well as touching on Rita Moreno's EGOT, Julia's own memorable audition for the show, and Cher's unmissable one-woman version.

30 May 2018Jesus Christ Superstar (with Toby Francis)01:02:08

Richard Carroll is joined by Toby Francis (star of Kinky Boots Australia and award-winning cabaret writer/performer) to discuss Jesus Christ Superstar, the rock musical based on an obscure ancient middle eastern story.

They get into the evolution of the idea from concept album to world-conquering smash hit show, the crazy 70s-ness of the movie, the quirks of Toby's religious upbringing, and why we haven't yet had a black female Jesus.

This episode of Every Musical Ever was recorded on Gadigal and on Noongar Whajuk land.

30 Nov 2017Wicked (with Elise McCann)01:13:27

Richard Carroll is joined by Helpmann winning actress Elise McCann to discuss the blockbuster musical WICKED which recently overtook The Phantom of the Opera to become the second most successful musical of all time.

They discuss the development of the show, the redundant Dragon Clock, the embarrassing elements to the story (Aanimals), their own previous encounters with Stephen Schwartz, and the differences between being an Elphaba alternate, standby or understudy.
