18 Mar 2025Between Two Beers: How a Conversation with Mates Turned into NZ's Top Podcast00:50:15

My life's mission is to help working professionals like you take the next steps in their professional lives and design a career that works for them. And part of that mission is interviewing some of the most interesting career changes on the planet. Top career coaches. As well as regular people like you and me who went from a standard career and decided to walk the path less travelled.

Someone who followed that journey is Steve Holloway. He's the co-host of New Zealand's top podcast, Between Two Beers. But before the success, he's someone who had a very interesting career just following his nose, going from a soccer scholarship in the States to success as a professional poker player and then having a very successful traditional career in journalism–long before he started a podcast in his garage with his mate Seamus.

You're going to learn:

  1. The special skill that has served him throughout his career, no matter the job.
  2. What he means when he says cast your net wide (and we're not talking about dating).

And I'll give you one simple challenge you can do today to help in your own career.

This Sunday, we're going to reflect on why you should be listening to your life. The times when you're not only happy, but truly stood out from the crowd, and why the key to unlocking your next chapter might already be written in your own autobiography.

25 Feb 2025INTERVIEW: The Messy Middle–What to do in a Career Crisis w/ Laura Robichaux00:41:35

Today's guest is a walking case study on what happens when we chase external success, but it doesn't match who we are on the inside. She is, in her own words, a corporate dropout, a recovering codependent, people pleaser. She was a very successful professional in the advertising industry, only to get burnt out to the point. She couldn't get out of bed. It made her ask the question most of us ask at some point in our professional lives. Is this really it? You'll learn how Western society has got our measure of success so wrong, what she suggests we do instead, and I'll give you one simple challenge you can do today to help on your own career journey.

03 May 2022DEATH BY POWERPOINT: Do You Really Need a Degree? With Charlie Parker (Director).00:47:41

Do you sometimes wonder whether college is worth for the time and effort?

You've probably spent a number of years getting a qualification. Only for most of the information to no longer be relevant to your job. Plus, you've probably got a significant amount of student debt to go along with it.

You might be thinking: "Was it really worth the time and expense?" And, "If I'm going to change careers, do I really need a formal qualification to retrain?"

Join host Steve Oehley as he talks to Charlie Parker about whether or not we need a degree in the 21st century.

>> JOIN THE COMMUNITY:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/escapetheninetofivepod

>> OUR GUEST THIS EPISODE:

Charlie Parker, freelance director.

He learnt more in a week of placement than he did in three years of university. He believes formal education is outdated and in the YouTube generation you don't need a degree to learn a new skill.

Link: www.brokenblonde.com

>> WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  1. Why you've got to go downhill, before you go uphill.
  2. How putting in the hard work pays off.
  3. Why to expect rejection (it's not the end of the journey, it's part of it).

>> TAKE HOME CHALLENGE: EMOTIONS JOURNAL

Keep a small journal and at the end of every day, write down three emotions that came up during the day and the circumstances they came up in. Also, write down one thing you are grateful for. Identifying specific emotions helps identify exactly what it is you enjoy about your job and your day, and what specific moments are making you unhappy. Writing down something you're grateful for has been shown to improve wellbeing and help shift your mentality to a positive mindset.

02 Mar 2025MOTIVATION: A NEW Framework for Your Career.00:08:28

You're stuck in a career that feels like it's going nowhere. When you started in your job, it felt like the perfect stepping stone to success. A clear ladder to climb. But now? You're staring at the same desk, the same tasks, and the same routine you've been in for years. You thought you'd have it all figured out by now. More money. More purpose. More growth. Instead, you feel stagnant. And the idea of making a change feels overwhelming–maybe even impossible. If we're honest, isn't there a part of you that wonders if it's too late? That little voice whispering:

"What if this is as good as it gets?"

But there's one thing no one tells you.

In today's Monday Motivation, I'm going to help you reframe how you think about your career–because the very thing holding you back is the limiting beliefs about your current career.

03 May 2022THE MYTHS: Why to Stop Listening to Everyone Else, with Clare Mann (Organisational Psychologist)..00:50:04

Have you ever felt trapped in a job and are only doing it because you feel you "should"?

Have you ever been told you "should" get a qualification and "should" get a solid job and "should" buy a house and "should" get married?

Yet people are drowning in college debt, one in three people consider their jobs as meaningless, people come trapped in their jobs to pay mortgages, and last I heard 50% of marriages end in divorce.

Are you sick of being told, this is how you "should" do things? You've gotten into this position because you've always taken the advice of other people. Your parents probably told you to get some training behind you, get a solid job, maybe even a mortgage, and then you'll be happy.

Join host Steve Oehley as he talks to Clare Mann about the myths we tell ourselves, that hold us back.

>> JOIN THE COMMUNITY:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/escapetheninetofivepod

>> OUR GUEST THIS EPISODE:

Clare Mann is a banker turned organisational psychologist. She unpacks the myths we tell ourselves we "should" do, teaching you how to get rid of the myths we tell ourselves and do things we actually want to.

Links: https://linktr.ee/clare_mann

>> WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  1. How to spend more time doing things you actually want to.
  2. How to get rid of the excuses we tell ourselves when we dare to change.
  3. How to listen to your own voice.

>> TAKE HOME CHALLENGE: TIME SPEND.

Grab a big sheet of paper and write down exactly how you're spending your 168 hours per week. Cross out all the things you do only because you think you "should" or someone else has told you you "should". Replace these with things you want to do, including allowing time DAILY for at least 30 minutes of exercise and at least 15 minutes of meditation. I guarantee this will not only make you feel happier, but help with decision making down the road when you've got a healthier and clearer mind.

19 Feb 2025Being "Civilised" is Over-Rated. Here's Why:00:07:03

How much of your life is dictated by what others consider "normal"? You sit at a desk all day because it's considered professional. You might wear a suit and tie because it's civilised. Why do we force ourselves into uncomfortable clothes, awkward postures, and habits that literally hurt our bodies–all in the name of being "civilised"? 24 Jan 2025An Approach to Your Career That Pays Off in Every Area of Your Life00:06:40

The aim is to separate your work from your life, right?

You leave the house, clock into work, do your job, clock out, and go home.

But with emails on your phone, 24/7 access to the internet, and even working from home - it can be hard to separate work from life.

We all need to switch off from work–but separating ourselves from our work–that may just be a mistake.

And today you're about to learn a different perspective on work.

10 May 2022CAPITALISM IS A TRAP: How to Live a Meaningful Life, with Moon Hurst (Banker turned Videographer).01:02:03

You're here because you know capitalism is a trap.

You've seen your parents work their asses off. Probably didn't see one or both of your parents as much as you should have, all in the name of: Making. More. Money.

And truth is, you've got sucked into it too. How do we escape the trap of capitalism? How do you live an enjoyable, meaningful life while still paying the bills needed to survive in this capitalistic world?

Join host Steve Oehley as he talks to Moon Hurst about how capitalism is a trap.

>> OUR GUEST THIS EPISODE:

Moon Hurst - agricultural banker turned videographer.

He's someone who's living proof you don't need to follow the rules to live a good life. The best part is he was once just like you and me qualifying as a banker in New Zealand, he landed a corporate job in London, living the high life on a massive salary only to find himself stressed and unhappy at work.

He left that world behind and found his way into videography, something he loved doing, spending half his time surfing and Indonesia and the other half living on the road in an RV in New Zealand.

Moon believes he's happier than all of his mates, who've got stuck in the trip of a stressful job to pay for an expensive house.

>> WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  1. How to escape the trap of capitalism by doing what you want.
  2. Why you should listen to your friends, if they tell you you're good at something.
  3. Why you've got to be the top 10% of whatever it is that you choose to do.

>> TAKE HOME CHALLENGE: HONEST BUDGET

If you're serious about escaping the nine to five, you've probably got to change your spending habits. Go through your account for the last few months and figure out what you're spending your money on. Create a budget based on things you NEED and then another budget including the things you WANT. This is going to take a bit of self reflection here. Do you NEED to be living in the most expensive part of town? Do you NEED to have a six dollar coffee every single day? Do you NEED to go out for dinner twice a week? The more honest you can be with yourself, the easier you can cut back your spending and the easier it'll be to transition to another livelihood.

16 Aug 2022QUICK BITE: What will you regret when you die?00:17:56

Imagine getting a call from an elderly person who says:

"I am future you, currently lying on my death bed, and I want to share all the regrets you're going to have in your life, so that you don't make the same mistakes."

What do you think you'll most likely regret at the end of your life?

While we move through our day to day life, we rarely stop and think about what our last days would be like. What might you regret at the end of your life?

We can't talk to our future selves, but in this episode, you can get the next best thing.

In Bronnie Ware’s book, ‘The Top Five Regrets of the Dying’, she shares her experiences with palliative care patients on their deathbed and what they most regretted about their lives.

>> WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  1. What are the five most common things people regret at the end of their life.
  2. How to avoid making the same mistakes in your own life and career.
  3. What steps you can take today towards escaping the nine to five.

>> TAKE HOME CHALLENGE: SUCCESS JOURNAL

Write down at least a one positive experience or success from today. It doesn't have to be anything amazing, even something as simple as sharing a joke with a colleague or opening a door for a stranger.

If you're anything like me, you might come from an upbringing where only the big successes are celebrated. By acknowledging the small successes, it will literally re-wire your brain to think more positively. Keep it by your bedside table (somewhere you won't forget). It's a daily habit that will literally take you 30 seconds each day.

26 Jan 2025MOTIVATION: Three EASY Ways to Stop Worrying About Work.00:05:18

There's a lot to worry about in the modern world:

  • Cost of living.
  • Climate change.
  • Even just trying to correct a joke without offending anyone.

There's a base level of anxiety that comes with being a human being–one of the reasons why nicotine and the alcohol industries are so profitable.

When it comes to your career, there's also a lot to worry about:

  • Money.
  • Workload.
  • Or even whether you're doing something meaningful in your career.

How do you stop worrying and start living?

How do you create more enjoyment in your job and stop worrying about the perfect job?

Even if your dream job is the long-term goal?

In today's Monday Motivation, I'm going to help you kickstart your workweek with the solution.

20 Sep 2022AWARENESS: How Increasing Self Awareness Will Help You Make Better Career Decisions (Steve's Story Part 1)00:15:27

Chances are, like many others, you followed the standard path to success. You got decent grades in high school, went to college, graduated with a good degree, and then landed a solid job. But this so-called “path to success” isn’t all it's cracked up to be.

Perhaps you're looking to make a change, but you're not sure how you can leverage your interests to actually pay the bills. Maybe you've already changed jobs once or twice, but you still don’t feel fulfilled. If you know that you need to pivot, but you're not sure where to start, this is the episode for you!

If you've been following this podcast, you've likely heard snippets of your host, Steve Oehley’s story along the way.

This season, we’re dedicating a few episodes to sharing his career journey, which is full of relatable examples and actionable lessons that you can use to help you escape your nine-to-five and design the career that works for you!

>> WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  1. Why you shouldn't beat yourself up for the career choices you made when you were just a teenager
  2. Why, while you are likely being called to do something else, even if it's not clear what that thing is, you'll initially hold off from making change because of the uncertainty
  3. How having a mentor will open up a world of possibilities that you never knew existed

>> JOIN OUR COMMUNITY:

>> TAKE HOME CHALLENGE: LISTEN TO YOUR LIFE

Rather than looking for something new, have you ever considered something from your past? If you were given all the money in the world and you could not fail, what would you do?

The answers to these questions will give you some clue about what you should be doing. Here’s an exercise for you: In one column, write down all the things that you really enjoyed about your previous jobs. Be specific! These could also be the things that you were good at in school. In a second column, write down all the things you enjoyed doing in your childhood. Now, draw lines connecting corresponding things in both columns.

Once you’ve found the commonalities, write down three feasible things you could be doing as a job or business. Whichever one of these three things makes you feel the most excited, find a way to include it in your life!

Write down your:

1. Purpose. Why do you do what you do beyond making money? Money does not bring you happiness. It's gotta be something that means something to you.

2. Values. This is a set of beliefs that guides your behaviour.

3. Goals. What is your vision for the future? These have to be goals that will stretch you. It's got to be stuff that's going to improve and challenge you as a person.

4. End Vision. What is it that you could become, that you have not yet thought of? Look for something you're really passionate about and convert it into something that you can consider a job. Be creative here.

26 Feb 2025Social "norms" are a facade. Here's why:00:08:26

People love putting you in boxes: Ben the accountant. Jess the lawyer. Steve the Vet. We're taught from a young age to aim for stability, safety, and predictability. Deviating from that is seen as a threat. Not just to you, but to the very framework they've built their lives around.

It's not just a career path.

It's an identity.

And when you show them another way, it makes them question their own choices. How do you avoid this clash with the "normal" and "safe" career path most people prescribe to? The answer may surprise you.

09 Aug 2022WORK HARD PLAY HARD: Can you really find work life balance? Nigel Marsh (TED speaker & author)01:02:19

"Is having work-life balance achievable?"

"Is it realistic?"

"What does work-life balance even mean to me?"

These might be questions you've asked.

You want a successful career, you want to earn good money, but you're also getting stressed out. You're not spending enough time with family and friends, barely any time for hobbies, let alone some exercise at the end of your workday.

Something's gotta give.

>> OUR GUEST THIS EPISODE:

Who better to discuss work-life balance thank Nigel Marsh; an advertising executive who lost his job with four young kids and decided to remain unemployed for a year to spend time with his family and figure out what work-life balance meant to him.

He's also done a wildly popular TED talk on work-life balance, authored multiple books including his latest book "Smart, Stupid & Sixty". Nigel has his own podcast, The Five of My Life, as well as speaking around the world about his experiences.

  2. Why the world's problems are not your problem.
  3. Don't wait for death, disease, redundancy or divorce to make change; you can start small.

>> TAKE HOME CHALLENGE: WORK-LIFE BALANCE

Privately, ask yourself:

  • What type of person do I want to be?
  • What type of life do I want to lead?
  • What type of legacy do I want to leave?

Then ask yourself:

  • What type of person am I?
  • What type of life am I leading?
  • What type of legacy will I leave, if I carry on this way?

Identify if there is a gap between those two things and finally ask yourself:

  • Am I going to do anything about the gap?

Decide don't slide.

23 Feb 2025MOTIVATION: Wondering What Could Have Been in Your Career?00:09:15

You wake up every morning, rush through your routine and dive headfirst into a job that if you're being honest with yourself, barely energises you anymore. It's not that you hate it, it pays the bills, keeps you busy. But deep down, there's this gnawing sense that something's missing.

Maybe you've got a passion project gathering dust. Or dreams you've buried under a pile of maybes and some days. Every day you ignore what excites you, what drives you. You let a little part of yourself die. One year, becomes ten years, becomes a lifetime. You're stuck in the same job, the same routines, telling yourself you're too busy, you've got too many bills to pay, or it's too late to change.

Those dreams?

They've faded into a distant, what could have been.

The worst part?

It's not just about what you haven't done. It's about what you've lost. Your sense of purpose. Your joy. Your spark. You're alive, sure, but are you truly living?

In today's Monday Motivation, we're going to talk about one of life's toughest truths–Your life is going to come to an end one day. But it's not just the end of life, but the small deaths we happen. Today I'm going to motivate you to kickstart your journey back to living a life and career of fulfilment–and you'll learn why it's never too late to change.

24 Feb 2025TIP: You've Done Your Bucket List Wrong. Here's Why:00:07:43

Have you ever stopped to think about what you would regret if your time ran out tomorrow? It's an uncomfortable thought, but most of us live as though we have an infinite number of days. We work jobs we don't love, postpone our dreams, and tell ourselves I'll get to it "someday".

But here's the thing: Someday is never guaranteed. And as we grow older, that nagging question only gets louder. Did I do what I truly wanted? Or worse, what if I never even tried?

Today, we're going to help you avoid a life filled with regret–by creating a bucket list. Just not in the way you were taught growing up.

11 Oct 2022DO IT FOR LOVE: How to find your passion, w/ Jason Skeesick (Financer turned gym owner and entrepreneur)00:39:07

We've all heard the saying: "Follow your passion."

It's easy to say, but what does it even mean? Some people think this is the best advice in the world, others say it's the worst advice you can give to somebody.

But what if you don't think you have a passion you can convert into paid employment?

>> OUR GUEST THIS EPISODE:

Jason is a veteran of the United States army. He went to college, got a finance degree and landed himself a great corporate job. But sitting in a financial meeting, the only person in the room he identified with was the entrepreneur sitting across the table!

He ended up betting it all on his own, starting a gym and eventually helping other entrepreneurs grow their business. He now hosts The Spear and Clover podcast, which is for renegade entrepreneurs who bet it all on their passion. They tell the story about people who saw the world as it could be and couldn't help but take action.

>> WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  1. Why you need to look in the mirror and really understand yourself before you can figure out your own career.
  2. How being clear about what your future looks like will make it a lot easier to reach the top of your career mountain.
  3. How to find your passion by trying different things - paying attention to the strokes, not the medium.

14 Jun 2022THE SIDE HUSTLE: How to Use Social Media to Grow Your Brand, with Hannah Mellsop (Real Rad Food).00:36:44

You're here because you feel trapped in your nine to five job.

If you're like most people, there's probably plenty of hobbies you enjoy doing in your personal life. But none of them feel like something you can turn into a comfortable paying job.

This week, we speak to someone who's going to challenge that assumption.

Join host Steve Oehley as he talks to Hannah Mellsop about how to use social media to grow your brand.

>> OUR GUEST THIS EPISODE:

Hannah Mellsop. She's the founder of Real Rad Food, which is a plant-based dessert company. She started it as a side hustle, making healthy treats as a creative outlet, sharing her treats on social media.

What started as a hobby. She grew from the ground up attending local markets and growing organically. She now employs a team of five people and ships food online throughout New Zealand. She is living proof you can turn your hobbies into a thriving business.

IG: @realradfood

>> WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  1. You learn how you can test the market on social media, to discover if these legs to turning your hobby into a genuine business.
  2. Why you should always start it as a side hustle.
  3. Why you've got to be prepared to walk through the C.R.A.P. to get to the destination.

>> TAKE HOME CHALLENGE: SOCIAL MEDIA ENGAGEMENT.

Before starting a side hustle, I recommend becoming active on social media. This will be different for every person, but I'll give you an example to help you out.

I have a friend who LOVES fishing. If he posts photos of himself fishing on social media, chances are with the number of people who post similar photos he is NOT going to be able to turn this into a side hustle.

However, like any business, if he gets more SPECIFIC, he might find a NICHE that hasn't been tapped yet. Maybe he posts about the handmade fishing flies he enjoys making, that are particularly good at catching a certain type of fish. Or he goes on a Facebook community page and offers advice to more amateur fishermen than him. As he builds credibility, a business opportunity could be formed.

03 May 2022THE PANIC ATTACK: How to Quit a Well-Paying Job, with Chris Stemp (Entrepreneur).00:49:39

So you're looking and to leave your nine to five job, right? You want to do something else.

But, you're probably wondering: "Where do I even start?"

You're here because you're not satisfied in your current nine to five job. How can you escape the nine to five and find work you enjoy doing without losing your financial freedom?

>> OUR GUEST THIS EPISODE:

in today's pilot episode, you'll hear from Chris Stemp about how to quit a well paying job. He was a financial analyst at a fortune 500 company before having a panic attack at work quitting and becoming an entrepreneur and podcaster.

If you think you're earning too good money to quit, Chris is your inspiration to do it anyway. Earning the kind of money most people in their early twenties could only dream of. He took the leap when a panic attack helped him realize he was miserable in his job.

His podcast: www.smartpeoplepodcast.com

>> WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  1. Why you should be kind to yourself when you realize you've made the wrong career choice
  2. Why you should do it incrementally
  3. What Chris means by "creating space."

Every episode, Steve will give you a challenge to help you on your own journey out of the nine to five. This isn't just another motivational podcast. We're going to help you escape the nine to five in an achievable way.

>> TAKE HOME CHALLENGE: CREATE SPACE.

Three options

1. Take a break. But this time don't go on holiday. Take AT LEAST a week off, if not a month to reset. Sleep lots, eat well, do stuff you enjoy (avoid alcohol), exercise daily. Meditate daily. Allow at least an hour a day to go on a long walk by yourself and allow thoughts to come up.

2. If you literally cannot feed yourself if you take time off work, reduce your hours. You are not going to be able to make change without reducing energy spent doing what you're currently doing and focussing your energy on making change.

3. If you are extremely stressed in your job and/or miserable, consider quitting. This is the worst case scenario. Research shows our focus narrows when we're stressed. You are not going to make the best decisions with your future if you stay in a job like this.

Whatever option you choose, the key here is creating space. Don't overthink it. At this stage it is about allowing time to reset. We'll get to the details later.

19 Apr 2022Stuck in a dead end job?00:04:56

So you looking to leave your nine to five job right? You want to do something else, but you're probably afraid what if it doesn't work out? What if I quit my job, and the thing I fall into fails.

Or worse.

I'm even more unhappy there. What happens?

My name is Steve Oehley. I'm somebody on my own journey to escape the nine to five. And I'm here because I know that there are other people just like me who are also stuck in the trap of a nine to five job they don't enjoy.

In this show, you'll hear from both trained professionals and people who've escaped the nine to five.

We get career advice from a banker turned videographer, a woman who turned down a corporate job for a life working with horses, a guy who quit finance to start a podcast, and many more...

I want it to create a podcast that not only inspires you to make a change out of the nine to five job, but also provides a realistic framework to actually achieve change.

We all love hearing about the girl who spends two hours a week blogging and the rest of your time traveling or the guy who started Instagram out of his garage. Those stories are great, but they're not realistic for the vast majority of us. You'll hear stories to motivate you on your own career change, knowing that these people have once been in a similar situation to you. And you'll always get three tips from our guests to help you escape the nine to five.

You might be thinking these stories are great, but how is this going to help me make a career change?

Alongside our guests, I'll be providing an episode by episode guide to helping you escape the nine to five. This is a comprehensive framework based on years of work by people smarter than me. At the end of each episode, you'll be given a challenge to help you on an achievable journey out of a nine to five.

The show is designed to give you inspiration to escape the nine to five, but it is just a starting point.

It's scary. You've done training and reached a stage in your career where you're getting paid comfortably. You're probably at least in your late twenties, maybe with financial commitments, like a mortgage and or kids, it will be hard. So having a group of people to support you or make the journey easier,

I encourage you to join our Facebook group escapes the nine to five podcast. There you'll join a community of people making their own transition out of the nine to five job

04 Oct 2022REPLAY: Why to Stop Listening to Everyone Else, with Clare Mann (Organisational Psychologist)..00:50:04

1 How to spend more time doing things you actually want to.

2 How to get rid of the excuses we tell ourselves when we dare to change.

3 How to listen to your own voice.

07 Jun 2022THE INSIDER: How to Change Jobs... Without Changing Jobs. Robbie Allen (Insidery)00:40:29

I'm going to address the elephant in the room here.

Not everyone listening to this podcast is suited to escaping the nine to five. Maybe you like listening to the stories, but actual changes too scary, or really you're comfortable in your nine to five job and don't want big change.

Chances are, you're not a hundred percent happy in your current role. While this podcast is your guide to escaping the nine to five, you need to decide if you're unhappy in your job or unhappy in your profession.

There's a significant difference.

Join host Steve Oehley as he talks to Robbie Allen about career changes within an organisation.

>> OUR GUEST THIS EPISODE:

Robbie is the founder of Insidery, whose slogan is the best insight into a job comes from those actually doing it. He helps young people starting off on the perfect career path by hearing from those on the inside. But before doing all this, he discovered how to change career without leaving a workplace, transitioning from a business management role in an advertising agency to a role as a strategist and the same agency.

Link: www.insidery.co

>> WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  1. Why you should break down the change into something you can dip your toes into.
  2. How sharing your idea with family and friends will not only help give other perspectives, but also provide some much needed accountability to actually make change.
  3. How to audition for roles within your current workplace to prove to yourself and to your colleagues that you can actually make change .

>> JOIN OUR COMMUNITY:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/escapetheninetofivepod

>> TAKE HOME CHALLENGE: CONTACT AN INSIDER

There's something you've always wanted to do on the side. Quietly you think to yourself, if I could get PAID to do this, I would do it full time. I almost GUARANTEE you, there is someone out there doing what YOU enjoy most, and getting paid for it.

Get in touch with someone who's making a living out of YOUR dream job and ask them HOW they got there. Even if this person is FAMOUS, there are ways to get in touch and ACTUALLY get a response.

20 Mar 2025HAPPY FRIDAY: Wave goodbye to sticks & carrots. There's a better alternative for your career.00:22:01

If you're a millennial, chances are you've got boomer parents. Parenting with reward and punishment. Sticks and carrots. Extrinsic motivation. And this might lead to a career choice based on reward and punishment. A well paying "prestigious" job. Implied negative consequences if you didn't go to college. Safe professions. And the result? A draining job where work is exhausting. Days drag on forever. And by Friday, you're counting the minutes till the weekend. What if you could achieve the opposite? An energising job, where you look forward to going to work, and don't care if you're working on Friday night, let alone the weekend. In this happiness episode, you're going to find out how.

12 Jan 2025MONDAY MOTIVATION: How to Set Your Own Terms and Conditions for Your Career00:03:29

  • Society wanting you to have a stable job, a mortgage, and two children.

But what if we're looking at expectations the wrong way?

What if there's another way to look at them, that will change the way you view your life and career?

In today's Monday Motivation, I'm going to help you kickstart your workweek with a mindset shift that will change the way you see the world.

There's a level of comfort on your job, you mostly know what you're doing when you get to work, it pays comfortably, and do you have friends in the industry.

But imagine doing this job for another 30 years.

Imagine a day of work is one page and the story of the rest of your life.

You're coming home from work tired, the work is often unrewarding, and you're drained of energy.

Do you really want to fill these pages in the story of your life with hundreds, if not thousands of more days like this?

I'm going to give you some seemingly contradictory advice... and in this episode, you're going to find out what.

You're not happy in your current profession and you've always wanted to change, but you've probably made excuses to avoid the scary part change. That's really the crux of what makes us gaping the nine to five hard. It's fear of the unknown fear of change. Fear of failure.

Join host Steve Oehley as he talks to Cam Calkoen about embracing fear.

>> OUR GUEST THIS EPISODE:

>> TAKE HOME CHALLENGE: FEAR SETTING

Based off Tim Ferriss' book, the Four Hour Workweek, write down your fears, not your goals.

  1. Define your nightmare, the absolute worst thing that would happen if you did what you were considering doing. Envisage this and painstaking detail. Would it be the end of your life? How likely do you think this would actually happen?
  2. What steps could you take to repair the damage? If the worst case scenario happened, chances are it's easier than you'd imagine.
  3. What are the outcomes or benefits both temporary and permanent of more probable scenarios. Now that you've defined your worst nightmare. What are the more likely outcomes? How likely is it that you could produce even a moderately good outcome?
  4. If you were fired from your job today, what would you do to keep your finances under control? Or if you quit your job, how hard would it be to go back to your old job or a similar one, if you really had to?
  5. What are you putting off out of fear? Usually what we most fear doing is what we most need to do. As Tim Ferriss' says a person's success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have.
  6. What is it costing you financially, emotionally, physically to postpone action. Don't just measure the downside of action, measure the downside of inaction. If you don't do what excites you, where will you be in one, five or ten years. The cost of inaction is the greatest risk of all. You don't want to be one of those people living a life of regret.
  7. What are you waiting for? Measure the cost of inaction, realize the downsides of change are unlikely, and fixable, and develop the most important habit of all - ACTION.

18 Oct 2022POD DROP: Construct Your Life w/ Austin Linney (Spear and Clover Podcast)00:52:02

This week, we're releasing an episode of the Spear and Clover Podcast. You'll recognise the host Jason Skeesick, who was our guest from last week's episode.

I'm sharing this episode, because it fits nicely with our theme, of designing a career to work for you. Jason speaks to Austin Linney about constructing your own life. Jason narrates below:

When you meet someone for the first time you can often tell if they are in momentum on the way up in life, coasting along, or struggling and on the decline. There's just a palpable impression people give off that registers at least subconsciously.

When I met Austin Linney the sense was PERFECTLY CLEAR that here is a man in momentum and on the rise to great heights.

Sure enough, his story is unbelievable. It is full of struggles, addiction, rebirth, helping others, and from the sounds of it... a great deal of success.

If you enjoy a breakthrough come-back story as much as I do you're going to love this episode!

28 Feb 2025MISSION: Venting About Work? Here's What You Can Do Instead:00:08:48

How many times have you sat with your closest friends, venting about work, and dreaming about doing something different? But how often do those conversations actually lead to action? The truth is, most of us are great at talking about change, but terrible at holding ourselves, or each other, accountable.

How many conversations have you had where the same career frustrations come up over and over again?

Yet here you are, still in the same place, still stuck. At some point, these conversations become a sadistic version of Groundhog Day.

And it doesn't just affect you. It affects your friends too. You're all holding each other back.

Where would you be if you actually worked together to make those changes? Imagine having the impact of having someone who not only believed in your goals, but also pushed you to act on them.

In this episode, you're going to find out.

19 Mar 2025Why do so many people hate their jobs–and what you can do about it:00:07:02

The Monday Blues. Hump day. TGIF. It's become so normal, we've just accepted that you should dread work and celebrate the end of the work week. Why do we put up with this? Why do we settle for jobs that drain us, rather than energise us? Especially when they're not necessarily meaningfully contributing to society. And more importantly, what can you do about it? In this episode, you're going to find out.
