Ed continues to fight #48 in the abandoned lab, but he has a trick up is armor sleeve. He manages to win, but before Envy and Lust arrive and take care of things before #48 can divulge any information that might help Ed in the search for the stone. #66 introduces himself as the famous Barry the Chopper—what you haven’t heard of him?—and instead of landing a blow on Al, gets into his head about how genuine his sense of self is. The abandoned lab exploding breaks up their fight, and luckily Ed makes it out alive, but badly injured. Afterwards, he gets a talking to from Ross and Brosch in the hospital, Al continues to question his reality, and Winry agrees to make a trip to fix Ed’s arm… again. Thank you for listening! The Führer visits Ed while still in the hospital, and tells the Scooby gang to keep the information they know about the stone and experiments in the abandoned lab a secret—and to trust no one. Hughes, unfortunately, makes a discovery in the military criminal records that sets a target on his back. The gang arrives in Rush Valley. In the chaos of all the mechanics there ooh-ing and ahh-ing over Ed’s automail, a pickpocket named Paninya makes off with his State Alchemist’s pocket watch. Winry eventually catches her, and it turns out that she too has automail to ooh and ahh over. Winry convinces Paninya to take the gang to see the mechanic who made her automail. Deep in the mountains, they meet said grouchy mechanic Dominic, his son Ridel and daughter in law Satera, who is heavily pregnant. All the talk of automail and Winry asking to become his apprentice falls to the wayside when Satera goes into labor during a crazy storm. With no way to make it into town to the hospital, Dominic goes to get the doctor. Babies don’t wait around for storms to end or doctors to arrive, so despite her nerves, Winry takes charge and manages to deliver the baby safely. The transmutation seems to work at first, but rebounds. Al is taken away, but Ed is taken to a mysterious place to learn the truth of creation. Bargains are made and Al’s soul is recovered, but all this at the cost of Ed’s arm and leg. Roy and Riza travel to Resembool, find the remains of the horrible event, and find a broken Ed and Al. They offer Ed the opportunity to join the military, do research, and get their bodies back. Ed is determined, recovers from the automail surgery, and takes the state alchemist certification exam. Izumi dumps Ed & Al as her students, but as Sig points out, now they’re able to speak as peers. Ed & Al learn more about how Izumi came to know Truth from Sig, and make a plan to try to recover Al’s memories from the failed transmutation attempt—if his whole body was taken, he must know more than Izumi and Ed. In the refugee camp, Scar’s master comes to visit him. Scar is almost captured by two men at the behest of our favorite asshole Yoki. Roy’s promotion and move to central go through, and he assembles a team to take with him. Ed suddenly realizes that he needs to take his yearly assessment and heads out of Dublith to do that. The Führer & Armstrong follow him back to Dublith to try to convince his teacher to join the military. Riza runs into an old friend... of ours, not hers… After Roy gets information from that character, Riza, Roy, and Falman become more entwined in the darker goings on in the military. May Chang arrives in Amestris after a long journey across the desert from Xing. Kayal revives her and her teeny tiny panda companion with his father’s lunch, and almost immediately tragedy strikes the mining town. Fortunately May is able to save the miners using Alkahestry—Xing’s version of Alchemy. In Youswell she’s told of Edward Elric—the State Alchemist, and off she goes to find him. Ed returns to Rush Valley to get his arm repaired. After the catch up with Paninya and requisite beating from Winry, he and Al head into town and find another passed out dude from Xing… and he’s a prince! They revive him at the local pub as well, and he asks if they know anything about… the Philsopher’s Stone. Ed and Al try to leave but are pursued by Ling’s bodyguards, and half the town is destroyed… again. It turns out literally everyone is heading to Central—even our old friend Scar. Ed, Al, Winry, Ling, Lan Fan, and Fu arrive in Central… where Ling promptly faints and gets picked up by the police for traveling without a passport. No one is able to break the news of Hughes’ death to Ed, Al, and Winry, but they soon find out nonetheless. Roy continues to investigate the military and Hughes’ death with the help of Sheska. The homunculi continue to move their mysterious plans forward—Envy surveilling the military in disguise, and Lust too has a new contact within the military. With Roy getting uncomfortably close to their schemes, Envy sets a plan in motion to keep him preoccupied. When a familiar face is accused and convicted of Hughes’ murder, an escape plan is set in motion, but it’s not quick enough for Roy, who burns the resistant convict so badly, the coroner has trouble identifying them. Winry, then Ed and Al, visit Gracia Hughes to pay their respects and apologize. The kids are torn up about the death, especially Ed and Al, who are unsure who to trust and how to move forward in their quest to restore their bodies. We all learn that, as great as it seems to have a body like Al’s that feels no pain, there are some truly unpleasant side effects. She tries to attack him, but in the end it’s not in nature to be a killer. Ed & Al reconnect with Winry, and Ed finally tells her what he knows about her parents. At the hotel, she takes a call that helps her see that she’s not always the one waiting on others. The brothers see her off at the train station, and Winry comes to a realization about how she’s been feeling for a long time. Riza helps Ling take the captured Gluttony and injured Lan Fan to a hideout outside of Central. Roy, Ed, and Al rendezvous with them there. General Raven spills the beans about the army’s big plans to Olivier and asks if she’s in. He orders that they put the Sloth back in the hole and seal over it, but may have gotten more than he bargained for when dealing with Olivier Armstrong. A surprise phone call helps Riza recover after her encounter with Pride. The Briggs tunnel rescue crew returns just in time. We flash back before the end of last chapter. Winry devises her own plan to escape being used as a hostage to manipulate Ed and Al. Ed, Al, Scar, and Miles help pull it off. Kimblee and his military crew are forced to fall back due to an oncoming blizzard, while Winry, Scar, Marcoh, May, Yoki, Jerso, and Zanpano make their way out through the mining tunnels of Baschool—thanks to Yoki… for once. Word comes to the crew at Baschool that troops from Central have come to command Briggs while Olivier goes to Central. Hohenheim arrives in Liore, looking for something. Under the old church of Leto, Rose and the restaurant owner lead him to a tunnel, where he confronts Pride. At Briggs, Kimblee has led the Drachman army to a confrontation, promising that with Olivier gone, the control of the fort will devolve into chaos. It doesn’t go how Kimblee and the Amestrian army have led them to believe. The Scar gang lure Envy to Asbec with the promise of finding Dr. Marcoh. Working together, they’re able to weaken Envy to near death. Scar convinces May to head home to Xing, but the kind townspeople in Youswell and a little prodding from Envy convince her that it’s not time to leave Amestris yet. In Central, the Armstrong siblings reunite… which goes exactly as you might expect. Olivier learns even more about the army and the homunculi’s scheme to create an immortal army. The Führer reveals a bit about his family to Riza. Greed!Ling and Bido’s unfortunate reunion triggers Greed’s repressed memories of the Devil’s Nest crew, and after trying to attack Bradley, Greed once again strikes out on his own. Ed, having made a full recovery, with Darius and Hienkel, escapes being caught by troops in central. The run into Greed!Ling at the suburban hideout they used before after capturing Gluttony. Ling is able to give Ed some information before Greed takes again, and Ed makes Greed a proposition… All our friends start preparing for the coming Promised Day. Ed and his crew—I mean Greed’s crew—and Winry and her body guards connect hilariously in Resembool. The Armstrong mansion is repaired, and Roy pays Olivier a visit. The northern and eastern troops’ training exercise begins. Bradley comes to observe, but is informed about Roy and Grumman’s scheme, and tries to return to Central. An accident with Bradley’s train leaves Central open, but Father retains control. Ed & his crew meet Hohenheim in the Kanama slums. Ed gets the chance he’s been waiting for to punch Hohenheim… but does at least pass on Trisha’s last words to him.
