In this episode of subtext, we discuss a man who has been dominating the 24 hr news cycle for the last month, Kanye West. While his anti-semetic comments have halted his career, we dive into his problematic and abusive behaviors towards women, specifically his stalking of ex wife Kim Kardashian. A quick note about the timing of this episode: After several months of planning a subtext episode with Kanye West as the subject, Kendra and I recorded the episode on November 22nd. The next day, Rolling Stone magazine printed a longform expose detailing a years-long pattern of emotional and psychological abuse and inappropriate business practices perpetrated by Kanye. While we were not able to discuss these allegations during the episode, we feel that it reinforces everything we say and should be taken in tandem with what we discuss. - REFERENCES:

"Sic Transit Gloria… Glory Fades" was one of the breakout songs for Long Island band Brand New but it could just as easily be a description of their long running career. In this episode Kendra and Rich dive into some of those allegations and how little the music landscape has changed since they came to light. REFERENCES

04 Aug 2021 | 3. "I used to be a piece of shit." | 00:12:40
When people in positions of power use that power to manipulate or abuse others, how do we heal the harm that they've committed? We discuss how society views sexual abuse, explore various approaches to justice, and define accountability, while dispelling the myth that healing harm equates to cancel culture. Many of us were drawn to the independent music scene out of a desire to be part of a progressive, inclusive, anti-sexist, anti-homophobic, anti-racist, and anti-violent community. It's time for all of us to #speakupforourscene in order to preserve those values. 19 Jul 2021 | 1. This is enough. | 00:07:26
Sexual harassment and abuse have always existed in the music industry. While many seem to know this, too few of them grasp how expansive the problem has become. Many people we know in the punk scene have expressed that they “had no idea”, they “can’t keep up with the accusations”, or they “want to know how to be better”, but don’t know where to start. There are no more excuses This podcast is a place for survivors of abuse to share their truths and to expose listeners to the patterns of abuse and how the self-involved actions of others can change the course of another person’s life.
