25 Mar 2024Breaking the Bonds: Addiction and Human Trafficking - w/ Recovery Specialist Jessica Gobble Ep. 7300:21:39

Why and how do we address recovery in Elijah Rising Restorative Care?

In this episode, Jessica Gobble, Elijah Rising’s Recovery Specialist, explains how addiction feeds trafficking and trafficking feeds addiction.

Traffickers have learned that they are able to make more profit off of an exploited individual when they exploit them in multiple ways.

For instance, if a trafficker coerces a woman into transporting drugs across the border, distributing them, and then engaging in prostitution, they generate more profit compared to solely exploiting them for sex. This overlap between addiction and trafficking is prevalent for numerous reasons.

Jessica also discusses:

  • The distinction between forced and voluntary drug use, and their distinct impacts on individuals.
  • The significance of medical detox and its role in the recovery process.
  • The importance of empowering individuals to direct their own healing journey and providing support as allies.

26 Apr 2024Confronting Addiction and Trafficking with Faith and Recovery - w/ Recovery Specialist Jessica Gobble - Ep. 7500:28:26

What does recovery and restoration look like after addiction and trafficking?

This is the third and final episode in this series with Jessica Gobble, Elijah Rising’s Recovery Specialist. In this episode, Jessica talks about the deep shame embedded in people who have experienced addiction and trafficking, as well as the hope and restoration available to them.

Jessica also explains:

  • Recovery is not linear; relapse is often part of recovery
  • There is so much shame deeply embedded in people who have experienced trafficking and addiction, but we want them to experience complete freedom from shame
  • Full restoration comes from Jesus

“Addiction is cunning, baffling, and powerful. But there is One that holds all power.”

13 May 2024How Donated Vehicles Empower Survivors of Human Trafficking - Ep. 76 w/ Ross Peters, 3in1 Mechanical Ministries00:35:08

How is 3in1 Mechanical Ministries filling the gap of transportation for overcomers of trafficking?

In our work with women in Restorative Care, we have found that once they complete our program and have jobs and housing, we always still have the missing piece of transportation. In order to help our graduates be set up for success, they need a reliable way to get to and from work. Otherwise, they immediately find themselves in a vulnerable situation again.

That’s where 3in1 Mechanical ministries comes in. Ross Peters, their Founder and CEO, shares with us how his lifelong love of cars transformed into a nonprofit that gives away cars to people in need.

Ross also discusses:

  • The lack of transportation-related nonprofits not just in Houston, but all of the United States
  • The importance of providing reliable vehicles and follow-up care for clients
  • The amazing ways God opened doors to create this new nonprofit and some of the success stories they’ve seen

08 Jun 2020Is sex trafficking a racial justice issue? - Ep. 0800:49:30

The recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery have thrust systemic racism, inequality, and oppression into the national spotlight once again. As a justice oriented organization who serves women of color we recognize our need to have a conversation about the intersection between sex trafficking/prostitution and racism. So in this podcast episode we sat down with Kathy McGibbon Givens to have a conversation about the intersection between sex trafficking and racism.

About Kathy
Kathy McGibbon Givens is a wife, mother, author, and playwright who has overcome the dark world of sex-trafficking. After many years of living in silence, Kathy decided to journal what happened to her as a way of dealing with the surreal experience. That journal became a book. That book became a stage play. Thus, she has mustered the strength to join the movement against human trafficking. Partnering with several nonprofit organizations, Kathy’s goal is to raise awareness, fight for those who are being trafficked and mentor those who have overcome it. She is now using her voice to inspire others to join the fight against such a horrible atrocity. She has spoken to faith-based organizations, educators, students, medical professionals, and politicians. During her time as a Program Director, Kathy helped to develop a trauma-informed restorative care program for adult survivors of human trafficking. As a Lived Experience Consultant, Kathy provides training to various groups dedicated to the anti-trafficking movement. Kathy has dedicated her life to following the principles and beliefs instilled by her mother: Stand up for what is right. Speak out about what is not.

02 May 2021Why prayer? - Ep. 29 - Interview With Samantha Rude00:50:07

In this latest episode of The Elijah Rising Podcast we talk about the role of prayer in anti-trafficking work. I'm excited to share it with you because as you listen you will acquire a deeper desire to pray. At the end of the episode we come to a powerful realization about the power of prayer, don't miss it.

"Many times we pray about things and don’t know God’s will, but in the area of trafficking, we DO KNOW IT.  And that is the life blood of the anti-trafficking movement. WE KNOW Jesus came with the intentions to heal, comfort, and free those held down by the ways of the world. That’s a powerful place to stand “in the gap” between the will of hell and the will of Heaven." - Samantha Rude

Samantha Rude is the Director of Audience of One (the 24/7 prayer and worship initiative) at The Great Southwest Prayer Center, a catalytic resource center of worship & prayer for the city of Houston. Samantha is also a graduate of The Bible Seminary where she got MA in Biblical Languages and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures.

01 Jun 2021How are people groomed into trafficking? - Ep. 31 - Interview With Unbound00:51:44

We are often asked how do people end up in trafficking situations? There are many different answers to that question as each case is unique. However, sometimes there is a system that some traffickers use to prepare someone for abuse. This is often referred to as "grooming" and if you can understand the tactics traffickers use, hopefully, you can help prevent a trafficking situation from happening.

In this podcast, we invited Christa Mayfield of Unbound Houston to come and share. Christa is the Director of Educational Programs at Unbound Houston, an organization that mobilizes the Church and activates local communities to fight human trafficking through prevention and awareness, professional training, and survivor advocacy.

  • How can we be sensitive to the Holy Spirit in evangelism?
