13 Jan 2023Why is Instructional Design Important for eLearning?00:09:34

When it comes to eLearning, instructional design is one of the most critical factors. Content would be nothing more than a bunch of words on a screen without instructional design.

In order to succeed in the field of eLearning, instructional designers are integral and essential to the process.

An effective training process involves identifying the learners and their needs, delivering effective and engaging training to meet their needs, and assisting them in the process.

There is a lot of importance to instructional design in eLearning, and in this episode, I will show you why it is one of the best fields to consider a career in.

26 Jan 2023Why We Need Instructional Designers00:09:43

Instructional design is a critical aspect of e-learning that helps create an engaging and effective learning experience for learners.

The field has seen a significant increase in demand, with job postings for instructional designers, learning designers, and instructional technologists on the rise.

Good instructional design is essential for learners to retain knowledge, achieve learning goals, and stay engaged throughout the learning process.

One of the most important considerations in instructional design is the user experience (UX) design, which directly impacts the learners' level of engagement.

A better UX design is crucial in e-learning as learners tend to lose focus if the course is not engaging. Thus, a good UX design is vital to creating an effective e-learning experience that helps learners retain knowledge and achieve learning goals.

31 Jan 2023Tips For Assessing Learning Online00:13:04
  • The purpose of summative assessments is to determine if students have achieved the desired level of proficiency in a given learning objective or e-learning course. Summative assessments provide an overall understanding of student progress, while formative assessments identify areas that need improvement.
  • There are four types of summative assessments in e-learning: written reports, presentations, objective-based tests, and portfolio assessments.
  • Written reports/essays are an excellent way to assess a student's semantic knowledge and higher order thinking skills. Google Docs is a useful tool for assessing students through written reports and essays, allowing for real-time collaboration and feedback.
  • Presentations are a great way to engage students and assess them in more authentic ways. Prezi is a presentation tool that offers more interactivity and engagement than traditional presentation tools like PowerPoint.
  • Objective-based tests consist of multiple-choice, matching, or completion items and can be customized in the learning management system. Canvas is an example of a learning management system that makes it easy to create and set up objective based tests.
  • Portfolio-based assessments are a collection of student work that demonstrate mastery over time. They are often used to evaluate the student's understanding of key concepts and skills learned in the course.
  • Tips for effective integration of summative assessments in online courses include using a mix of assessment types, providing clear guidelines and instructions, and timely feedback.
08 Feb 2023Infographics For Visual Design00:12:22

Infographics are an excellent tool for instructional designers to use in elearning courses. They help to reduce cognitive overload by decluttering the screen and organizing information in a simple, easy to understand format.

Infographics use a visual format such as a chart or diagram to present data, with thoughtfully chosen graphics to tell a specific story and guide the learner through the information. They are educational, entertaining and useful, and can enhance the effectiveness of an elearning course while increasing its visual appeal.

They are great for all content types, including concepts, storytelling, comparative analysis, and processes and procedures. Infographics typically include text, sources, images, themes, characters and data. There are 12 tips for creating the perfect infographic. These include creating it for your target learners, keeping it simple, focused, easy to view, a manageable length and size, adding whitespace, having an attractive headline, focusing on the flow and more. The headline is extremely important as it grabs the learner's attention.

The flow of an infographic is critical, it should be like a good story, moving the viewer from one phase to another seamlessly. Incorporating infographics into elearning courses can not only enhance their effectiveness but also increase their visual appeal, making the learning experience more enjoyable and memorable for learners.

14 Feb 2023Imposter Syndrome00:10:26

Impostor syndrome is a common problem faced by many high-achievers, particularly in the field of instructional design. This phenomenon refers to the persistent self-doubt and fear of being exposed as a fraud, despite being successful in their careers. Imposter syndrome can have a detrimental effect on performance, satisfaction, and can lead to burnout.

A survey conducted by the "elearning and instructional design for beginners mastermind" showed that impostor syndrome is rampant in the field of instructional design, with issues like confidence in using technology, understanding jargon, designing content, and seeing others succeed causing feelings of self-doubt. Impostor syndrome can arise due to factors such as highly skilled individuals thinking others are just as skilled, leading to feelings of inadequacy, or due to pluralistic ignorance, where individuals feel like they're the only ones experiencing these feelings, when in reality others do too.

To help overcome impostor syndrome, it is recommended to talk about it with others who understand, separate feelings from fact, reward yourself for starting out, recognize failure as an opportunity, ask for help, visualize success and fake it till you make it. By following these steps, individuals can feel more confident in their careers and can succeed in instructional design.

16 May 2023Engaging Learners with Gamification: The Power of Game Elements in Online Learning 00:11:34

Gamification can be used in online courses to enhance engagement and provide learners with the ability to make choices.

Gamification can be a powerful technique for changing behavior habits, and it encourages people to keep returning to the course and participate actively.

It encourages competition, community building, and socialization, which is why it is useful in online courses where engagement is crucial.

Course creators need to understand game design techniques and how to think like a game designer. Game Design is a state of mind, and it is a skill that can be cultivated.

In this episode we'll talk about how implement gamification effectively by understanding how to create goals, rules, and real-world game activities into your online courses.

23 May 2023Engaging Learners with Gamification: Unlocking the Secrets of Motivating E-Learners00:11:07

Gamification offers benefits such as increased learner engagement, behavior change, and socialization. Learners feel a sense of accomplishment and progress through game elements like badges and levels. Gamification encourages active participation, competition, and learning from peers. It also promotes positive behavior change, as seen in Volkswagen's speed camera lottery study. Designers must align gamification with learning objectives, prioritize meaningful choices for learners, and avoid detracting from course content.

Various tools can be used in e-learning to make it more game-like: achievements, avatars, badges, boss fights, collections, combat, unlocking content, gifting, leaderboards, levels, points, quests, social graph, teams, and virtual goods.

The core elements of gamification are points, badges, and leaderboards. Points measure progress, provide feedback, and offer data. Badges represent achievements, importance, and can function as credentials. Leaderboards foster competition but should be used carefully.

Designing a gamified e-learning course involves identifying objectives, target behaviors, understanding players, developing activity loops, prioritizing fun, and using the right tools.

Gamification enhances engagement, motivation, and effectiveness in e-learning courses when thoughtfully implemented.

04 Jul 2023Know Thy Learners: A Comprehensive Analysis Approach00:17:16

An essential element in the instructional design process for online courses is a learner analysis. It entails compiling data on the traits, knowledge levels, learning preferences, and motivations of the learners. Instructional designers can customize the learning experience to meet the demands of the learners by getting to know who they are and what they already know.

It's important to determine which learning styles students like. Designers can utilize effective instructional tactics and develop stimulating learning environments by knowing if users are visual, aural, kinesthetic, or prefer a blend of approaches. For the purpose of designing inclusive and inspiring learning experiences, data on the needs, interests, and contextual aspects of learners must be gathered.

By doing a learner analysis, instructional designers can modify their tactics and materials to better meet the requirements and preferences of the learners. My focus lies in developing interactive courses, offering teachers the flexibility to employ various techniques and media types, including ready-made materials like user manuals, presentations, case studies, and more. I provide a comprehensive storyboarding checklist to assist in organizing course content, emphasizing the need for individual storyboards for every page of the course.

I underscore the significance of considering course objectives, syllabus links, and module durations to keep students engaged and progressing effectively. I offer valuable insights on creating engaging content and utilizing different instructional techniques while promoting clear and inclusive language throughout the course.

26 Jul 2023Proven Strategies for Effective Instructional Design00:13:21

The instructional strategy in designing eLearning courses should be based on a combination of experience, theory, and research, rather than relying solely on past experiences, opinions, or political agendas. Scenario-based learning is an effective approach that immerses learners in real-life situations, allowing them to make decisions and observe the consequences.

Infographics are useful tools for presenting information in a visually appealing and easily understandable way, reducing cognitive overload. Pre-training learners on basic concepts before starting a course can enhance their learning experience. Storytelling engages learners on a deeper level and helps establish a genuine connection to the content. Lastly, case studies and examples relate subject matter to real-world situations, aiding in comprehension and application.

In designing eLearning courses, it is essential to consider these strategies to enhance learner engagement, comprehension, and skill development.

Now, it's time for you to take the reins and put all these proven strategies into action. Get ready to create a learning experience that will captivate and inspire your audience, all while achieving those desired outcomes.
