08 Dec 2022 | EP 314. Canada’s “Modernization” Rules, and More | 01:08:31
It's a pretty big deal: Canada recently modernized its migratory birds regulations to include critical possession and transportation rules pertaining to waterfowl hunters. Jim Leafloor, Head of Aquatic Unit for Environment and Climate Change Canada, explains what important rules were changed--and why (link to updated Canada Migratory Birds Regulations provided below). He and Ramsey also discuss Canada's relatively liberal bag limits (8 mallard, 8 pintails, etc); the important role of resident and non-resident hunters, especially to modern-day waterfowl management; and ongoing drought implications.

12 Feb 2024 | EP 446. Is the Mallard Migration Shifting? Or Is Something Else Possibly Happening? | 01:15:43
In December's "Where the Hell are the Mallards" (EP 434), Dr. Michael Schummer described waning migrations of "Halloween mallards," that subset of North American mallards that fly to their southern overwintering haunts in mid- to late-October regardless of wintry temps and snow cover. He promised to climb down that rabbit hole with Dr. Phil Lavretsky if given the chance. Today, Drrs. Shummer and Lavretsky go deep into that briar patch! See, while it's easy to explain weak migrations in the absence of a real winter, other factors are likely influencing our percetions that fewer mallards are flying south or that the mallard migration is shifting westwards. Do. Not. Miss. This. Conversation!

03 Feb 2022 | EP 218. Oklahoma Tailgate Talk | 01:03:32
James Morel is a born-and-raised in Oklahoma, do-it-yourself waterfowler who especially loves sandhill crane hunting. He's also Wetlands and Migratory Bird Coordinator for Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, overseeing waterfowl habitat management, mid-winter waterfowl counts and various other waterfowl management responsibilities throughout Oklahoma. What's the big deal about sandhill cranes, how are they hunted? Which sandhill crane subspecies are hunted in Oklahoma and what are the differences? Why is Oklahoma a popular destination for both waterfowl and waterfowl hunters, what are the primary species hunted, and what public land hunting opportunities exist? Why is Morel confident that North America waterfowl populations are in good shape, and what biological observations make him think that hunter perceptions might likely be an optical illusion?

19 Jun 2023 | EP 368. Human Footprint | 01:30:58
Evolutionary biologist turned film producer Nate Dappen describes "Human Footprint," an upcoming 6-part documentary, as a profound exploration of how humans shape the planet and what it reveals about our collective identity. As the documentary delves into human impact, it raises questions about the role of waterfowl hunting in today's world and how the experience of duck hunting may influence non-hunting viewers. These intriguing topics were intimately explored while filming the “Top Predator” episode during a duck hunt. It's a reminder that regardless of our personal involvement in hunting, humanity undeniably leaves a significant mark on the natural world. Prepare yourself for an exceptionally thought-provoking podcast episode. And don't forget to mark your calendars for this documentary series; you won't want to miss it.

20 Oct 2023 | EP 410. From the Vault: Lynyrd Skynyrd Remembered | 02:51:23
On October 19, 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd was inarguably the greatest rock band touring the USA and played what was their final concert in Greenville, South Carolina. While enroute to Baton Rouge on October 20th, their plane crashed in the remote southwest Mississippi woodlands, killing 6 passengers to include frontman Ronny Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup vocalist Cassie Gaines. Decades later, their classic southern rock ballads are remembered worldwide - and everyone has a favorite Skynyrd song! Lee Kjos describes why Skynyrd remains his all-time favorite band. We then visit personally with Ronnie Van Zant's childhood friend and bodyguard, Gene Odom, and several Amite County, Mississippi locals who first responded to the crash. What was growing up in Jacksonville like for Ronnie Van Zant? How'd they develop their band name, what events inspired their lyrics, and what was it like touring with them? What kind of guy was Ronnie Van Zant and how would he likely have wanted to be remembered? What do first responders most remember about that day? What compelled them to privately fund and to recently construct a beautiful Lynyrd Skynyrd Monument nearby? Having met these guests and heard their stories, what's Ramsey's final take on it? All of these questions and some incredible never-before-told anecdotes in today's very special from-the-vault episode of Duck Season Somewhere. We received tons of feedback when this episode first aired in 2020. Turn it up.

09 Aug 2021 | EP 152. Growing Up Venice Louisiana | 00:56:57
The lonely Bell Chasse Highway runs down the Mississippi River's west bank, terminating at the end of the world in Venice, Louisiana. From there to the Gulf is nothing but the kind of marsh for which Louisiana is truly known as "Sportsman's Paradise." Jesse Morris got his first boat while 13 years old, plying local waters for shrimp, crabs, whatever he could catch, on his way to becoming a 5th-generation commercial fisherman. But the Lord works in mysterious ways. What was it like growing up 70 miles from the nearest McDonald's? What's the difference between brown, white and tiger shrimp? How'd Jesse get into guiding duck hunts and fishing charters, and what's the duck hunting like out of Venice? How has the marsh changed in his lifetime--and does he really eat coots? Jesse is soft-spoken man of few words, like someone that's spent a lifetime fishing, but his informative insights speak volumes about this amazing region. 02 Dec 2020 | EP 75. Bruce Kania, Floating Islands, Montana | 00:48:47
While watching Canada geese trading along the Yellowstone River from his back porch, innovator Bruce Kania tells Ramsey Russell about "the business of inventing." Influenced by a grandmother that taught him to snare rabbits, he grew up archery hunting in Wisconsin, became a young muskie guide, and eventually moved to Montana to chase elk. His Biohaven Floating Island technology is distributed worldwide, cleans water, increases fishery productivity and is even a scalable solution for water quality problems in the Chesapeake Bay, the Gulf of Mexico and world oceans. The invention was inspired while duck hunting in what he refers to as the Red Dog Story. A close encounter with a mountain lion is also recalled. What are some of his other inventions and what key advice does Kania have for would-be inventors? How did a duck hunt inspire this technology? Besides floating duck blinds, what are some of the ways the biohaven floating islands are being used worldwide? And if he uses this technology to form his own country, will there be ducks? Some great inventions have originated in the duck blind, but this one takes it to whole 'nuther level.

26 Oct 2022 | EP 299. Texas Market Hunting, Game Laws, and Outlaws Part 2: Outlaw Gunners and Stings | 01:08:17
Following the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which outlawed commercial sale of wildlife, the American public's demand for wild-harvested tablefare continued -- and there were folks that were more than happy to feed this lucrative demand, supplying barrel- and boat-loads of wild ducks and geese through backwater channels. In the second of this 2-part series, historic author Robert K. Sawyer describes a transitioning America, especially as it pertains to Texas, grappling with wildlife food versus conservation and later, conservation versus something that might only be described as recreation. Law enforcement may have started slowly, but culminated in a series of headliner busts that finally got folks attention. Part 1 of this 2-part series aired Wednesday, October 19, 2022. 23 Nov 2020 | EP 71. Holt Collier, Legendary Mississippi Bear Hunter, Part Two | 01:13:12
As we continue with this two-part series, Collier's hunting reputation has achieved heroic proportions. His circle of friends includes governors, generals, senators. But along with the railroads to whom Collier has supplied bear meat comes the clearcutting of the region's virgin forests and subsequent decimation of bear populations. But it's when Collier transitions from market hunter to bear guide that he garners the attention of the most famous big game hunter in America. What was the most perilous event during Collier's bear hunting career? Why did President Teddy Roosevelt come to hunt bears with Holt Collier in the Mississippi Delta, and what events transpired to make it one of the most heavily sensationalized media events of the year? What was the relationship among Roosevelt, President of the United States, and Collier, former slave and bear guide? What became of the world and the lifestyle that Collier knew? Ramsey joins Minor F. Buchanan, author of Holt Collier: His Life, His Roosevelt Hunts, and the Origin of the Teddy Bear, and Mississippi Delta storyteller Hank Burdine, for the finale of this incredible 2-part story about a people, time and place forever lost.

Michael L. Schummer has been an avid duck hunter since way back when. What began humbly enough as a scientific way for putting more ducks over his decoys spawned into a career, eventually leading to his becoming a Senior Research Associate at SUNY ESF, where he conducts myriad waterfowl-related research. Having developed an algorithm that accurately predicts waterfowl migrational timing, he shares with Ramsey reasons that waterfowl migrate -- or not. Lots of fun and interesting stories, something to talk about whether you're sipping cold coffee, looking at empty skies and wondering where in the heck the duck are, or already back at camp early after a barrel-burner.

Anything can happen while duck hunting. Greer Smith probably isn't the only person the get stuck while hunting near Venice, Louisiana, but watching ducks fly overhead and wondering where they'd originated sent his life into a new orbit. "There's a growing need for awareness," says Greer, who grew up duck hunting in Georgia. Quitting his day job and putting plans into motion, he started 50 Ducks in hopes that he can spark an interest in waterfowl conservation among school children and the non-hunting community. This year he's banding ducks in Sonora Mexico and at Jack Miner's in Ontario. Greer eventually hopes to generate much needed revenues to fund waterfowl research projects. Along with a drake shoveler named Sir Dabble presently streaming his whereabouts from nature to computer monitors worldwide, he's off to a danged good start! See related link below!

She's only 6 years old. In today's highly informative conversation, we cover need-to-know, aging-retriever topics quicker than a hard-charging lab through sheet water. Topics include retriever aging, conditioning, expectations versus reality, avian influenza, dietary needs, training versus hunting, major threats to aging retriever health (some you'd never think of) and much, much more. Seriously good info concerning your ride-or-die canine partner's health on the back side of their way too brief career. Listen and let us know your thoughts.

25 Jan 2024 | EP 441. Hit-or-Miss Waterfowl Hunting in Wyoming | 01:30:27
Kind of hard to complain about killing Wyoming greenhead limits when the temperatures are in mid-60s, but that's not always the case. Seasonably warm weather made for hit-or-miss waterfowl hunting in Wyoming, but the show must go on--you don't know unless you go, right?! A waterfowl hunting guide for 35 years, JJ Randolph is also a world-class storyteller and human being. He talks about starting Wyobraska--y'all ain't going believe what he traded for his first blind--why he chose Wyoming, important influences, why this area usually overwinters so many ducks and geese, waterfowl plucking, hunting strategies, Wyobraska's client retriever policy and much more. No wonder this hunt sells out as quickly as it does.

11 Feb 2021 | EP 101. Georgia Duck Hunt (and the Nut Duster from Hell Story) | 00:47:50
Situated in a landscape predominated by long-leaf pines, pecan orchards and peanut fields, everything sprouting from soils the color of rusted farm implements, southwestern Georgia isn't the duck hunting universe's proverbial epicenter. But it's exactly where I fell in with the right group of friendly folks to experience a real Georgia duck hunt and genuine Deep South hunting camp hospitality. Seated around the table after a monstrous breakfast, in a charmingly old farmhouse that for decades has been a family hunting camp, Chase Gibson and Caleb Jackson describe their duck hunting roots, how they hunt ducks in Georgia, and more. Shaun Harris then tells the story of one of their most illustrious long-time hunting guests, the infamous Nut Duster from Hell. Great hunting camp episode, proving once and for all that you're always among great people while at hunting camp anywhere.

13 Oct 2021 | EP 178. A Thriving South Africa Game Management Industry | 01:03:28
Most of South Africa can be described similarly to parts of South Texas: sprawling, brush-covered properties teaming with game animals managed under endless miles of high-fence. While watching a sporty dove and rock pigeon shoot, professional game manager Weynand De Jager describes the arduous undertakings required in reconciling herd numbers with habitat availability, and an enormous industry of supplying venison and game animal by-products worldwide. What do game managers like Weynand do? What's cull hunting, how's it differ from sport hunting, how's it implemented and by whom? Why does Ramsey claim he might have "found his calling if this GetDucks thing doesn't work out"? How heavily is this industry regulated, how quickly are game processed, meat wagons filled? What becomes of all that meat, what animal parts are used? How important is game farming to wildlife conservation in South Africa? Chalk this one up to really cool stuff learned on long drives between hunts, took me way out of my feather-covered wheelhouse and was too good not to share.

Waterfowl historian Dr. Wayne Capooth describes duck hunting in America way back in the 1600-1700s when the first colonists arrived to a real-life Garden of Eden. Describing their growing pains, how they hunted, what they hunted with and how natives taught them to hunt better, we end up discussing hunting George Washington's duck hunting experiences and other famous duck hunting US presidents.

08 Apr 2024 | EP 462. How Is Waterfowl Migration and Distribution Changing? | 01:19:45
Deep South duck hunters, especially, have been saying it for years—ducks are short-stopping way north of historical wintering grounds. The migration is different. Distribution has changed. But is it true? And if so, how have waterfowl migration and distribution changed, does it differ among species, what are the causes? Importantly, how might it affect traditional, continental waterfowl conservation efforts—and duck hunting as we know it?! Armed with recent research findings (some based on SIXTY YEARS worth of U.S. harvest data), US Fish and Wildlife Biologist, Heath Hagy and I race headlong into this daunting topic, covering mallards, pintails, divers, white-fronted geese, blue-winged teal, and more. Much more. Hang on, folks. Y’all might find yourself reaching for the oh-shit bar on this one!

24 May 2021 | EP 130. Swamp Warlock Jim Crews's Duck Camp Home | 00:50:58
It's a cold January night in the swamp. A roaring fire crackling, swamp dogs at our feet, their tails thumping, the smell of something good sizzling over hot charcoal wafts through the cabin. We are whetting our appetites with toddies and blues music. Known in some circles as the Swamp Warlock and Swamp Witch, Jim and Allison Crews always cast wicked spells of southern hospitality. The next morning we'll hunt among Bobo Brake's ancient, cathedral-like cypresses over traditional cork blocks, maybe even connecting with ancestral ghosts via an heirloom hammer-gun. But tonight we're just enjoying each other's company at duck camp. (Life's Short GetDucks: Mississippi, Home Is Who You Are drops tomorrow, May 25. Check it out on our GetDucks YouTube channel).

13 May 2024 | EP 472. Are We Killing Too Many Ducks? Better Understanding Duck Population Management | 01:43:03
Regarded by many as the absolute go-to guy when it comes to empirically describing North America's duck populations, Dr. Todd Arnold is at University of Minnesota, where his research emphasis includes developing waterfowl population models to guide management activities and predict future populations. "Are we killing too many ducks?" I asked repeatedly throughout our conversation. His thoughtful, plainly worded answers provide greater understanding of Adaptive Harvest Management---its inputs, assumptions, strengths, weaknesses---leading us to in-depth discussions about our beloved mallards and pintails, and whether science-based, hunting-related harvest affects sustainable duck populations.

Before John Gordon was Senior Communication Specialist for Ducks Unlimited, he hunted waterfowl and was even a snow goose guide way back in the real, good old Katy, Texas Prairie days. Following a Memphis BBQ lunch, Gordon and Ramsey talk then-versus-now across several topics. What does Gordon do at Ducks Unlimited, what are his waterfowling origins? How'd they hunt snow geese way back when, what were the limits and how have things since changed? Who was "Dex the Wonder Dog," why was running hunt tests kind of a big deal, and how'd he prove like only a retriever can that it's not where you start it's where you finish?

Located between massive lakes Winnipeg and Manitoba, the fabled Interlakes Region has been an important stop over for migrating Canada geese since forever--especially for that population of big honkers known locally as "Churchills." The region annually attracts goose hunters like myself that can't seem to get enough of them. Sometimes the stars align and we're even there at the same time. 12 Mar 2021 | EP 109. The White Way: California Goose Hunting with the White Brothers | 01:10:16
Right about the time you think you've seen and done it all in worldwide waterfowling, you jump into a California goose spread with Jonathon and Dillon White who show you the White Way. Gnarly, acre-sized flocks of snows and Aleutians overhead, the seething eye of a hurricane growing in ferocity and intensity with each spin, then oftentimes landing 15 yards away because there's no sense educating the entire flock you'll hunt all season. Instead we swiped a few crumbs from our laps, cherry-picking from small, loose flocks that strayed from the masses until piles of dead birds numbered plenty. What was it like for them growing up the sons of a cowboy in rural California, the part that remains "Real America" even today? What are there earliest and fondest memories waterfowl hunting? What's the local eats like? How and why did they transition to goose hunting, and how'd they progress to their goose hunting game to the highest level I've ever experienced?

04 Mar 2024 | EP 452. The Feather Thief | 01:42:11
Is it true that "man is seldom content to witness nature...he must posess it?" What is it about beautiful feathers that so obsesses some of us? Truth is truly stranger than fiction, and some stories you couldn't contrive in a lifetime's worth of imagination. Kirk Wallace Johnson's The Feather Thief is prime example--a child prodigy flutist becomes a world-champion salmon fly tier, breaks into British Natural History Museum, stealing hundreds of rare bird skins worth millions of dollars in the fly-tying underworld but irreplacably priceless to the scientific community. Anything for those beautiful feathers! For fame? For money? Told masterfully, Johnson's investigative story explores man's obsessive instinct to harvest--and to collect--nature's beauty. It's a story as old as time.

29 Feb 2024 | EP 451. Cape Barren Goose Hunting in Tasmania | 01:08:30
Rare in terms of the extremely small geograpic area they can be hunted relative to earth--and trust me, it's one helluva long trip just getting there from here--Cape Barren geese are also regarded as among the world's largest goose species in the world. While the coals for lambchops are getting hot, our Tasmanian bucket-list host, Rockjaw, talks about growing up on remote Flynder's Island; Cape Barren Goose habits, agricultural conflicts and hunting techniques, ways to eat 'em; and about other unique hunting and fishing opportunities in his tiny corner of the world between the Tasman Sea and Bass Straight. There's a reason there's so very little crime or antihunting there. He briefly explains that, too, like only Rockjaw can!

Having shared duck blinds in many places worldwide with Chris Gouras, I can tell y'all for fact that there's never been a lack of good things to talk about between volleys. The descendant of Greek immigrants, he's been around the restaurant industry since forever, and started duck hunting among true South Delta legends soon after moving to Mississippi. How'd Big John end up facing the wrong way in a Netherlands goose blind? Who were some of the colorful characters Gouras hunted with back in the good old days? What happened the morning he hunted with a former Mississippi Governor? Why does he say, "Mississippi has time for people?" How important are good eats at Gouras's hunting camp? Who's the fastest draw in a deer stand - Chris Gouras or Ramsey Russell? What'd Gouras's father insist be rescued from his home office preceding an incoming hurricane, and what was he the world's best at catching? How muddy was the drive to Rio Salado last time Gouras visited and why's he still going back? Past, present and future times covered, all awesome, like every single time we've ever hunted together.

12 Oct 2020 | EP 56. Rob Sawyer, 100 Years of Texas Waterfowl Hunting | 01:04:02
Thinking Texas during the mid- to late-1800s more likely conjures images of tough cowboys, fierce comanches, and dusty cattle drives than epic turn-of-the-century waterfowl hunting. Today's guest forever changes that. Rob Sawyer has authored 3 incredible books on the Lone Star State's colorful waterfowling history. Even in the halcyon days of waterfowling, sport hunters began emerging as conservationists. Saying "everything's bigger in Texas," Sawyer describes events that are truly hard to fathom by today's standard. What were the Canvasback Wars? Prize hunts? Ox hunts? What other migratory bird species were hunted for food and sport? What attracted so many sharks along Matagorda Island? What Texas town began when an out-of-state visitor shot 1000 ducks? When did snow geese begin using the Texas prairie? Many Texas listeners asked us to feature Rob Sawyer and for excellent reason. Sawyer's anecdotes range from humorous to jaw dropping, all so extremely interesting that you'll not want the episode to end. But we barely even scratched the surface!

10 Nov 2022 | EP 305. My Amazon Fishing Outfitter | 01:21:22
Deep in the remote equatorial Amazon River basin, virginal black coffee-colored waters are seething with toothed, rod-bending fishes to include not only colorful peacock bass and piranha, but even "a fish with ribs like a pig." Sounds like a paradise as described by my buddy Brent Mooreland of Acute Angling. An avid and well-travelled duck hunter himself, Brent tells about a world-famous associate he used to shotgun with before wading off chest-deep into Amazon peacock bass fishing adventures in one of earth's truly last remaining wildernesses. Heck, he had me at "a fish with ribs like a pig," but it's been a long time since a place so captured my imagination and I absolutely cannot wait to visit!

16 Nov 2020 | EP 68. Holt Collier, Legendary Mississippi Bear Hunter, Part One | 00:52:25
Holt Collier is among the most legendary figures in American hunting history that you've probably never even heard of. Proving once and for all that truth is stranger than fiction, and far more interesting, the story takes place in a primordial Mississippi delta wilderness that was vanquished during Collier's lifetime. Born a slave, Collier later became closely associated with some of the most powerful political figures in America through his unrivaled reputation as a hunter. What was Holt Collier's childhood like, and how'd he develop legendary shooting skills? How old was he when he killed his first bear? How'd Collier spend his time during the Civil War, and what huge opportunity developed during Reconstruction that put Collier on the path to becoming a hunter of heroic proportions? Ramsey joins Minor F. Buchanan, author of Holt Collier: His Life, His Roosevelt Hunts, and the Origin of the Teddy Bear, and Mississippi Delta storyteller Hank Burdine, for the telling of this epic 2-part story about a people, time and place forever lost.

13 Dec 2021 | EP 203. Waterfowl Hunting Wyoming's North Platte River | 01:04:52
The North Platte River winds it’s way snake-like through the tumbleweed-infused Wild West on its eventual passage to the Gulf of Mexico, making this part of Wyoming a waterfowl-rich area that attracts many mallards and Canada geese. But it’s not the only reason this region has exceptional waterfowl hunting. Wyobraska Waterfowl’s personable JJ Randolph has been hunting and guiding along the North Platte River near here since forever. An incredibly articulate storyteller, he describes the local hunting and culture to Ramsey between the volleys. Fantastic episode!

31 May 2020 | EP 24. John Devney, Delta Waterfowl | 01:19:39
It's late-May, the Dakota prairies are in great shape, and already there are bright yellow, little mallard and pintail fuzzballs on the scene, preparing for the flight south this fall. John Devney of Delta Waterfowl is an avid duck hunter, a natural born communicator. He and Ramsey Russell talk about favorite North American duck species (it'll probably surprise you) and favorite places to duck hunt in the US. Low on the water and coming in hot like decoying ringnecks, their conversation dives into lots of interesting waterfowl hunting topics. What's going on with specklebellies in the Deep South as compared to the Pacific Flyway? What's happening with pintails - they're probably shooting too many in Mexico, right?! And what about all of today's many modern hardcore hunters traveling to Canada - that's certainly impacting the fall flight, huh? Federal stimulus dollars galore are being spent to mitigate coronavirus, but how will the 2020 Pandemic affect waterfowl conservation efforts, such as banding and censusing? All of that and more in today's episode of Duck Season Somewhere.

23 Jun 2022 | EP 258. Mississippi Wild Hog Hunting Traditions | 00:49:44
Traditional black bear hunting ceased when Mississippi Delta's ancient hardwood forests were cleared long ago, but while the bears are no longer hunted, the sport itself continues. Within the region's seething, dark thickets are thick packs of black, tusk-gnashing wild hogs which are now hunted similarly. Legendary Mississippi storyteller Hank Burdine tells Ramsey about the pigs, people, dogs--and you got to figure a dog named Homicide was somehow legendary--horses and tools-of-the-trade surrounding this hard-core Deep South culture.

20 Jun 2024 | EP 484. Rocky Leflore and The End of The Line Podcast | 01:59:18
The man, the myth, the legend--the waterfowl podcast godfather and host of The End of the Line Podcast himself--Rocky Leflore pays a long overdue visit and catches up. Rocky's in-depth interviews with waterfowl hunters culminated in popular, episodic series such as Redemption, The Warden, Becoming Martin, Mondays With Rob, The Innovator, Thunder Rolls, and many more, taking us deep behind the scenes. The Life's Short GetDucks series brought me into the podcast world, and for that am thankful. The End of the Line Podcast ended abruptly during the pandemic--when you come to a fork in the road take it--but Rocky fills in lots of blanks, reminding us about who he was as a duck hunter and person, how he got into podcasting, why he left, what he enjoyed about it and misses most, what he learned, the challenges of converting a chatroom to social media, and more. He also provides an update about the famous Mossy Island story. It was great catching up with our old friend, and already looking forward to having him on again.

In case you haven't noticed, North American duck populations--duck harvests--have declined from the highs of the late-90s. Dead hens don't lay eggs, for sure, but is the fix that simple? What are the root causes for these declines in waterfowl populations? How bad is it, why might it get way worse before it gets better, and what can we duck hunters really do about it? 03 Mar 2022 | EP 226. Is Hunting Pressure Affecting Modern Duck Hunting? | 01:16:47
Stale ducks. No ducks. Whether real or perceived, it sometimes comes with the territory. But is it getting better or worse? Is it really a function of flooded corn fields further up the flyway, or might there be other factors influencing migratory duck behaviors? Might modern duck hunter behavior be conditioning ducks to learn new scripts? Dr. Cohen is an Assistant Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Management at Tennessee Tech. A long-time duck hunter himself, much of his research involving duck behavior and the way ducks interact to habitat and to hunting pressure originated in the duck blind. Like high flyers that ignore every secret weapon in your playbook, this sobering discussion will likely give you something to think about. And humbled.

21 Dec 2023 | EP 433. Waterfowl Eyesight: Seeing Things for What They Really Are | 01:12:49
How well do ducks and geese really see--and how can understanding this make you a more effective waterfowl hunter? Dr. Bradley Cohen from Tennessee Tech explains waterfowl eyesight to Ramsey, focusing on depth perception, field of view, color discernment and rapid "refresh rates." Citing many years of in-depth research, he paints a pretty clear picture. I mean, there's a reason they sell camo long handles and face paint, huh? Waterfowl's ability to hear and smell are worth mentioning, but this episode is about clearly seeing waterfowl hunting for what it really is. Or isn't. You decide.

09 Dec 2024 | EP 535. New Brunswick Canada Duck Hunting, Eh? | 01:29:37
A month-and-a-half and 11-plus-thousand miles after starting this year's North American Waterfowl Road Trip finally arrives to new territory, to the land-time-forgot (so described for reasons discussed herein) province of New Brunswick, Canada. Joining local go-getter hunters Matt Wilson and Stephen Margison, am immersed neck-deep into Maritime Canada waterfowl hunting culture where distances are described relative to time, where directions are described relative to the St. Johns River, and where daily agendas are relative to Canada geese, black ducks and mallards. It's here that was inspired to conform my chicken-fried recipe to local standard (recipe shared). "Canada duck hunting" may not have evoked thoughts of New Brunswick in the past, but you better believe it will moving forward! Bet that you'll agree, eh?

Southeast Louisiana duck hunting spawned some of the most collectible decoy folk art in America. Fashioned from nearby natural materials, they were originally made to feed families, communities, and an entire culture. Brian Cheramie grew up on the banks of Bayou Lafourche, where at a young age he developed through his grandfather an interest in old wooden decoys and the legendary duck hunters who made them. But this fascinating story is about way more than decoys. In its telling, Cheramie colorfully describes old school duck hunters from a bygone era, what became of them and their ways, and the immense void that was created.

It began on the Garwood Prairie. The famous Blue Goose Hunting Club was brainchild of colorfully legendary waterfowl hunting guide Marvin Tyler and spawned Texas's once world-famous snow goose hunting industry. Mike Lanier was only 13 years-old when his dad dropped him off at the Blue Goose Hunting Club to work. In this special episode of Duck Season Somewhere, he describes hunting snow geese back in the good ol' days before ATVs, e-callers, full-body decoys, telling stories about the salty pioneers that made it happen, why it became famous and what became of it. Like a collared blue goose fluttering slow-motion over old-school rags at only 15 yards, this is an episode you'll definitely not want to miss!

11 Apr 2022 | EP 236. Guatemala Final: Big Al's Good eats | 01:18:03
Food is one of the truest measures of local culture worldwide, maybe even more so among duck hunters. While exploring duck hunting in Guatemala, Ramsey's hosts made sure he experienced everything the small Central American country had to offer. None more so than today's guest, Alvaro Aguilar, who has a US background in culinary arts and is the official camp cook. He and Ramsey discuss time spent in the Southern US, classic Guatemalan dishes versus Mexican, why Guatemalan tamales are better, and similarities to the Deep South. Why waterfowl hunting is important to Aguilar strikes familiar cords, but his fearless field-to-table chef adventures takes "eating the whole animal" to a whole 'nuther level! Y'all DO NOT want to miss his mouth-watering duck recipes. You ain't going to believe "duck chicarones" and, yes, it was absolutely delicious.

11 Aug 2021 | EP 153. Is the Great Salt Lake Biting the Dust? | 01:23:56
As one of the last functioning inland saltwater ecosystems in the United States, and certainly the largest, the Great Salt Lake's wildlife value as expressed in numbers is eye-popping: stages two-thirds of North America's swan population; yields 1/2 of North America's cinnamon teal; satisfies 40% the world's aquacultural brine shrimp demand; benefits 10 million birds comprising 338 species annually, to include 1/3 of phalaropes and 95% of eared grebes existing in the world. Hunters and society have subsequently benefited, too. But severe drought conditions are greatly exacerbating long-standing water politics. The outlook is dire. Rich Hansen from Utah DNR briefly gives current updates on waterfowl productivity and habitat management implications, describing why they'll luckily be spared major avian botulism outbreaks. Jaimi Butler from the Great Salt Lake Institute then provides big-picture assessments of the Great Salt Lake's importance and drought-induced effects, describing catastrophic consequences and offering possible solutions. We true duck hunters know what Theodore Roosevelt meant when he said, “Wildlife and its habitat cannot speak, so we must and we will.” This thought-provoking episode speaks to that.

18 Feb 2021 | EP 103. SPECIAL: What Might Maryland's HB 0911 Say About the Future of Duck Hunting? | 02:25:29
There's a real storm brewing over the Susquehanna Flats near Havre de Grace, Maryland - and it ain't clouds of blackheads and canvasbacks like the good ol' days. It's about how and where who can hunt in these fabled public fowling waters. HB 0911 proposes limiting certain portions of the Flats to body booting only, and to exclude other regionally traditional duck hunting methods, such as layout boats (or any anchored boat for that matter). In today's special episode of Duck Season Somewhere, we meet with local hunters and stakeholders from both sides of the fence, opponents and proponents, to discuss this highly controversial topic. How do opponents feel this could affect them? What were the proponents' intentions? How might this affect you regardless of where you duck hunt?

18 Jul 2022 | EP 264. Why Las Flores Argentina Duck Hunting? | 01:41:17
So named for the rosy-billed pochards that darken the sky at times, Las Flores is in Ramsey's opinion hands-down the most consistent Argentina duck hunt in a country that reputedly offers the world's best. But what do clients have to say about it? How do first-time and repeat guests describe hunting here as compared to home? Duck hunting experiences are subjective, and dead ducks are part of the experience. But beyond tired trigger fingers, their answers will probably surprise you.

10 Nov 2021 | EP 191. "I Punched a Polar Bear" | 00:59:46
There's no telling what surprising topic the next duck blind conversation will entail. Today's episode is proof. Before becoming a full-time Canadian hunting and fishing guide, Jason Hamilton was a marine mammal biologist in remote reaches of the Canadian Arctic. What was it like growing up in Canada, how'd he get started hunting, and what inspired him to such a career path? What's it like working in that part of the world and what critters did he work? Why did they have to handle process polar bears within 20 minutes? What made this line of work dangerous, what were some memorable close calls and when did he decide to pursue other career avenues? Life is full of surprises, especially in a country as big as Canada.

29 Jun 2023 | EP 371. Full Steam Ahead: Making Ducks or Geese Happen | 01:16:14
Like many others, Nick Johnson began waterfowl hunting with his dad, soon becoming the most skilled caller in the blind. And like many others, as he grew older he wanted to experience more of North America's waterfowling than was available in his home state. Determined to create opportunities for himself, he hatched a plan. Now a guide for Prairie Limits Outfitters, he's also developed the instructional Goose Tec mobile app and has his own signature call among the Pacific Calls' lineup. Whether ducks or geese--or both--Nick offers advice for getting out there and making do-it-yourself hunts anywhere in happen. He and Ramsey offer another pro-tip, too, but don't believe everything you hear or see on the internet!

11 Dec 2023 | EP 430. Australia Outback Goose Camp | 02:23:29
It's as hot while goose hunting as when cutting summertime Mississippi grass, plus there's plenty dangerous critters in the field and water, but geese and ducks are flying! Australia's outback no different than goose camps elsewhere around the world--good eats and good times are had by all. Falling in with the motley assortment of Australian goose hunters that Ramsey considers friends, he learns their stories. Tune in for a conversation that's as likely familiar as it is entertaining and informative. And ask yourself this--how would an at-all-cost hardcore waterfowler like yourself fare at Australia Outback goose camp?!

In todays episode, Chef Richard runs down a list of camp staples and favorite recipes to include blackened redfish with creole cream, ceviche, sashimi, coconut soup, gumbo, chicken skin boudin, duck poppers, shrimp and crawfish boil, and more. 08 Sep 2022 | EP 282. Back to South Africa: You Can't Eat Pygmies and Other Topics | 01:27:55
"..and then in the mid-80s they officially made it illegal to eat pygmies!" exclaimed our host during a post-hunt discussion over coffee. Back in South Africa for ducks, geese and game birds, Ramsey chats with long-time friend and associate Mike Curry. As quickly as incoming driven guineafowl flying like black-and-white cannonballs, the pair run through lots of interesting highlights and stories to include hardest-of-hard species Ramsey finally managed to scratch off his list, tomato chutney, how locals prepare waterfowl, francolin home-range; South African rhinos, cheetahs, lions, and ivory; eating pygmies, the bush meat trade and poaching patrols. The things learned at duck hunting camps around the world never ends!

18 Nov 2020 | EP 69. Former Federal Wildlife Agent, Lifetime Mississippi Duck Hunter | 01:33:49
Today's guest credits duck hunting back in Mississippi's South Delta - that required long, gumbo mud hikes with his dad, across bean fields that stretched for as far as he could see - for his developing an appreciation for "working smarter not harder." He recalls the expansion of federal refuges in the Mississippi Delta and, as one of their employees, public relations fiascos and law enforcement challenges. What was it like hunting the Mississippi Delta back in the good ol' days? How'd he start working in federal law enforcement, and what happened when the federal government turned private hunting clubs into federal refuges? What was the most memorable thing said in his presence while a hunting guest at duck camps in Mississippi? What was the infamous "1:30 Hole", and fate likely befell this magical spot? Being a life-long duck hunter and wearing a federal agent badge formed fascinating perspectives that he shares in today's great episode.

16 Mar 2023 | EP 342. Setting the Record Straight | 01:09:29
Hunting is conservation, and we all preach its merits. Unfortunately, too oftentimes we're mostly just preaching to our own choir members. Introduced by her immigrant father to the great outdoors while a child, it wasn't until pursuing a journalism degree that Gabriella Hoffman embraced guns and hunting--and found footing in hunting advocacy. The myriad ways anti-hunters undermine hunting value is mind-boggling, and we discuss ways you'd never imagine. For her, it's about setting the record straight. Via public speaking engagements, her District of Conservation podcast and social media platforms, she reaches the 80-percent middle ground that too many of us do not. Or cannot. And that's a very good thing.

From past episodes, y'all have come to know him as a since-forever duck hunter (personally and professionally), a staunch conservationist, avid birder, nature observer and self-taught waterfowl habitat expert. What's driving new fiber-wad shotshell production? Only 3 years after crashing meteorically onto the waterfowl hunting ammo scene, how has Boss business culture evolved? Why will the new Boss shop include a customer experience center? And how has an otherwise product-oriented business become truly personal, transforming Brandon's true life purpose?
