This episode features my conversation with drummer David Abbruzzese.

Growing up in Texas, David discovered his passion for music early on and began to develop his skills as a drummer through his work with many local bands.

In 1991, through a recommendation from drummer Matt Chamberlain,  David went to Seattle to audition for Pearl Jam, who were just getting ready to release their debut album. 

He became a member of the band and held that position from 1991-1994, during which time, he recorded the iconic albums VS and Vitalogy.

After working with Pearl Jam, David continued to establish himself as a freelance drummer and has gone on to work with multiple artists showcasing his creative and versatile approach to the drums.

In our conversation, we talk about his early inspirations and how his passion for music helped to develop his creative approach. 

We discuss the process of recording the VS and Vitalogy albums and what it was like working with renowned producer Brendan O’Brien. 

We also talk about what he’s been up to since Pearl Jam and why it’s essential to appreciate all the opportunities that are presented to you.

On this episode, my guest is Mike Trebilcock. Best known as the leader of the power-pop/punk band The Killjoys, Mike is a prolific film composer, songwriter, producer and multi-intrumentalist. He has created unique scores, themes, and songs for feature films, theatrical productions and podcasts, including the theme for this show.  He is also the singer/songwriter/guitarist/for the horror-rock band Sematary Spawn which features music from many of the films he has been the composer for. Mike continues to be in demand for his work in many different genres and situations.

In our interview today, we discuss his background and how he developed his interest in songwriting and composition. We also discuss what it’s like to work in collaborative situations and why it’s important to be adaptable in order to help others achieve their own artistic visions.

On this episode, my guest is drummer Liberty DeVitto. For thirty years, Liberty was the driving force behind the legendary Billy Joel. Known for his intense drive and New York swagger, he created the grooves to multiple platinum Billy Joel albums that have sold over 150 million copies.

He also went on to work as a session drummer for a variety of other artists including Meat Loaf, Paul McCartney, Karen Carpenter, and Stevie Nicks

In 2020, he released his memoir, Liberty- Life, Billy and The Pursuit of Happiness, which is a honest reflection of following and fulfilling your dream and an inside look at the music and career of Billy Joel.

Today, Liberty continues to work with a variety of artists including The Lords of 52nd Street, and The Slim Kings and spends much of his time encouraging other drummers to follow their passions

In addition to touring and recording, Tim is passionate about creating educational resources through the courses and eBooks available at his website and maintains a roster of private students both virtually and in-person at his studio in Nashville. 

Tim has also spent many years transcibing drum parts from iconic songs and drum solos and his work have been featured by Zildjian, Vic Firth, Drummerworld, and the Percussive Arts Society as well as numerous educational projects.

Currently, Nic is touring with Mike & The Mechanics and is also involved in his own original projects. On this episode, my guest is drummer Clifford Koufman. Based out of Nashville, Clifford is a respected educator, who founded the Sound & Rhythm Drumming School back in 2000.

Over 15 years ago, Clifford studied with renowned jazz musician, Ra-Kalam Bob Moses, who continues to be a friend and mentor to him.

Currently, Clifford is working on producing a documentary project to help tell the story of Ra-Kalam Bob Moses, introducing the teachings and philosophies of this unique creative artist.

This episode features my conversation with drummer & motivational speaker, Angelo Pentaris. Based in Greece, Angelo was born with cerebral palsy and quadriplegia. At 4 months of age, the doctors said that he would not be able to move his arms and legs, therefore not allowing him to lead an independent life. Through the support of his parents and their belief that he would be capable of living a life without limitations, Angelo began a daily regiment of physio-therapy when he was 9 months old. 

It was through his perseverance, commitment to exercise  and physical movement, that Angelo was able to overcome his disability. 

He discovered the drums through his passion for music and went on to pursue a Bachelor Of Music degree at the Los Angeles College Of Music. After graduating, Angelo began a career as a professional musician and opened his own production studio.

He also established himself as a motivational speaker, who has inspired many others to not let limitations stand in their way, allowing them to face their fears and embrace their full potential. In our conversation, we talk about his diagnosis and how he was able to overcome the obstacles that he faced. We discuss why it’s essential to commit to doing the work that is required to achieve your goals and why it’s important to not allow other’s perceptions of your capabilities deter you from achieving your dreams. Discovering his passion for music at a young age, Jake went on to study music at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia where he earned his Music Performance Degree in 2013. Welcome to Part Two of my interview with Jon “Bermuda” Schwartz.

For over 4 decades, Jon is best known as the drummer with the iconic "Weird Al" Yankovic. The two met while recording the parody "Another One Rides the Bus" at the Dr. Demento show on September 14,1980, then shortly after, Yankovic invited Schwartz to join his band, gave him the nickname "Bermuda" and they have worked together ever since.

Jon is also the official band historian, known for keeping meticulous lists and notes, and has archived an unsurpassed collection of unique audio and video products from around the world that feature "Weird Al" Yankovic. He is also an avid photographer and in 2020, Jon published Black & White & Weird All Over, a coffee-table book featuring his unreleased black-and-white photographs of Weird Al from the early '80s. In 2022, he went on to publish the follow-up Lights, Camera, Accordion! a collection of his colour film photos of Weird Al from 1981-2006.

On this episode, my guest is Darcy Patrick. For over 25 years Darcy was making a living from music as a professional bass player freelancing with many different bands, as well as teaching privately. At the same time, he was also working full time in a music store doing sales, repairs as well as assisting in managing the store. 

In 2013 the perfect storm happened in his life and pushed him over the edge. Darcy had struggled for over 38 years from depression and had to make a difficult call for help.

After a month of intense therapy, Darcy's therapist started giving him home work. Through these weekly assignments, they would talk about what he had written and worked on changing his negative thoughts, and changing the way he was seeing the world. His therapist told him he was a natural writer and that if he wrote a book he could change people's lives who suffer in silence, and who are too afraid to reach out and get help. Four years later he released his 1st book “Why I Run” My story of how I won my life back from the darkness of depression. Darcy then went on to write the books “Creative Writing For The Mind, Body & Soul”, “My Guided Meditation"  Using Meditation as a Therapeutic Tool to Focus Your Overactive Mind, “ The Big Let Go” Letting go of control is taking control and in 2022 "Managing Wellness" Creating and Maintaining a Mind, Body & Soul Connection. Since the release of Darcy's book his life has changed dramatically. He became a public speaker and peer counsellor doing talks all around Southern Ontario for many different mental health and addiction organizations to raise awareness. His goal is to break the stigma behind Depression, Mental Health and Addiction, help as many people as he can and let them know they are not alone.  In our interview today, we talk about just how common these challenges can be for all of us and why it’s essential to not only seek out support when you need it, but to understand the impact and value it can have to just take the time to listen without judgement. This episode features my conversation with renowned Canadian drummer Ted Warren.

Born and raised in Saskatchewan and now currently residing in Southern Ontario, Ted discovered his passion for music at a young age. In addition to becoming inspired by the music of his generation, he also discovered an interest in Jazz. Ted went on to study Music at Montreal’s Mcgill University, and received a certificate in Jazz Studies from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. 

As an active member of Canada’s jazz scene and the recipient of The Jazz Report’s “Drummer of the year” award in 1996, Ted has built a solid reputation as a versatile drummer performing and recording with the who’s who of the Canadian Jazz scene including the legendary Rob McConnell and The Boss Brass big band. 

He is also a composer and fronts his own quartet, Ted’s Warren Commission, which released their debut CD, First Time Caller, to critical acclaim in 2004 and followed that up with the albums Songs For Doug and 2016’s The Great Regina Pizza Debate.

Ted is a highly regarded teacher, clinician and adjudicator and has taught in the Jazz Studies programs at both Humber College in Toronto and Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario.

In our conversation, we talk about the importance of embracing your musical ideas and not allowing your own self doubt to get in your way. On September 28, 2023, the drumming world lost a hero. Highly regarded as drumming’s Global Ambassador,  Dom Famularo was a beacon of light in the music industry.

Based out of Long Island, NY, Dom was a drummer, world renowned educator, motivational speaker, mentor and a friend. His passion and enthusiasm was infectious and everyone who was ever blessed to be in his presence was uplifted and inspired by him.

Facing a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer over the last couple of years, Dom fought valiantly to overcome this disease just as he faced and overcame  so many obstacles throughout his life. 

Even when things were really tough at times, he faced this challenge with a sense of grace. He devoted his attention to empower and encourage thousands who continued to reach out when they needed his guidance and support.

I have gathered stories from many throughout the industry who’s lives were impacted by Dom. This tribute is a celebration of his legacy and to show the world just how he impacted our lives through his kindness and support. It is through their stories that I want to tell how much he affected all of us.

Now, sit back and take some time to listen to only a few of the countless stories of some of the lives he impacted. This episode features my conversation with drummer, Matt Starr.

Born and raised in Toronto, Matt began his musical studies at the age of 5 learning the violin. At 13, it was his discovery of the Beatles and drummer Ringo Starr which launched his journey as a drummer.

Matt pursued formal music education at the University Of Toronto, but after a couple of years, felt that it wasn’t what he was seeking and left to pursue other options. In search of inspiration, he traveled to New Jersey to study with legendary jazz drummer Joe Morello, reigniting his passion for music. Matt also studied with Jim Chapin and studio legend Bernard Purdie. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2001, Matt established a successful career as an in-demand session drummer, who is know for his creative approach and ability to adapt to many different musical styles. He has gone on to work with artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Chris Shiflett from the Foo Fighters, Christopher Cross, Lisa Loeb and many more.

In our conversation, we talk about what it’s like working with Sarah McLachlan and how that gig came about. We also discuss his experiences studying with the legendary Joe Morello, and why he embraces opportunities that allow for creative freedom and expression.

On this episode, my guest is drummer Jamie Wollam. Best known as the current drummer for the band, Tears For Fears, a position he has held since 2010, Jamie is an in demand musician who, at the age of 13 became inspired to pursue drumming after attending a concert by the band KISS. He went on to develop his skills by playing along with the albums that inspired him during his formulative years, mostly in the hard rock and metal genre of the day.  At the age of 18, he attended The Percussion Institute in Hollywood, CA, where after studying with some renowned educators, he graduated with honours in 1989. Jamie landed his first professional touring gig with Michael Sweet, of the band, Styper. This began his career as a touring and session drummer. In addition to Tears For Fears, He has had the privilege of touring with a variety of other artists including Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Tommy Shaw, Fee Waybill and Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello’s solo project, The Nightwatchman. As a musician, Jamie has also begun composing and producing music for television, film, as well as other artists. 

In our interview, we talk about how important it is to remain committed to your craft despite the many personal and professional challenges you may encounter, why you always need to stay humble and show gratitude even during the challenging times, and also that it is essential for our well being and mental health to always have a creative outlet to express ourselves.

On this episode, my guest is Jon “Bermuda” Schwartz.

For over 4 decades, Jon is best known as the drummer with the iconic "Weird Al" Yankovic. The two met while recording the parody "Another One Rides the Bus" at the Dr. Demento show on September 14,1980, then shortly after, Yankovic invited Schwartz to join his band, gave him the nickname "Bermuda" and they have worked together ever since.

Jon is also the official band historian, known for keeping meticulous lists and notes, and has archived an unsurpassed collection of unique audio and video products from around the world that feature "Weird Al" Yankovic. He is also an avid photographer and in 2020, Jon published Black & White & Weird All Over, a coffee-table book featuring his unreleased black-and-white photographs of Weird Al from the early '80s. In 2022, he went on to publish the follow-up Lights, Camera, Accordion! a collection of his colour film photos of Weird Al from 1981-2006.
