13 Jan 2021Ep. 11 - Va'era with Zach Krauss00:49:02

A plague (or seven) upon your country?!? Whether you’re a weather lover or just interested in why hail, locusts, frogs, and blood all descended upon an entire nation (except for, you know, the Israelites in the nation), then you’re in for a treat with meteorologist Zach Krauss. Showing that one can be both a rabbi and a weatherman wannabe, we were also as hyped to have Rabbi Lyle Rothman on the show as he was to find out there was a hurricane simulator nearby.

05 Dec 2022Ep. 307 - Vayishlach with Rabbi Dr. Kari Tuling00:43:58

Throwback to the BEST type of religious school: the one where you had the “cool teacher” who taught you about the craziest Genesis stories and really wanted to know what YOU thought and felt and had to say? What—you didn’t have that experience? Well let us give it to you this week with an excellent teacher—Rabbi Dr. Kari Tuling!—who helps us wrestle with some difficult Torah portions and traditions, thoughts about God, and maintaining vulnerability when entering into real conversation. Whether you’re grappling with God or feeling secure in your Jewish Thought, we think this episode is bound to have something awesome for you!

New Year—new episode! We are bringing it back to Bo and invite you to come along with us as we strongly connect it through a Jewish lens. You’ve been on this journey with us for a FULL YEAR OF TORAH! (Wow!!!) Join featured rockstar featured guest Margarita Korol for an artistic exploration of Lech L’cha including a lens of grief that we don’t always talk about (it’s hard to leave places and people behind!). We were also thrilled to welcome grief influencer Nadine Menashe as our Q&A guest and to make a very special drink for “Midrashic Mixology” with wine that she sent from Lange Estate Winery. We can’t wait to continue the journey with you and invite you to join us as we continue on to new and exciting lands. Shout out to Rabbi Josh Mikutis and JDC-Entwine for making the introduction!

We can’t believe that we’ve come to the end of our second season and are so appreciative that we get a chance to “turn it, turn it, turn it again” at Simchat Torah! 03 May 2021Ep. 25 - Behar Bechukotai with Carly Sugar00:55:34

We truly believe that this was a fruitful episode, but what else would you expect from a portion and episode about agricultural laws and farming? Whether we’re discussing the literal journey from farm to table or reassessing our relationship with food, we were lucky to have Carly Sugar, Adamah Fellowship Director, to guide us on this virtual field walk. 08 Jun 2021Ep. 30 - Korach with Emilia Diamant01:04:29

What makes a rebellion just or unjust? And is a true rebellion just a fight you can’t win or is it fighting FOR a real cause? Teen educator, social worker, and extraordinary activist and advocate Emilia Diamant works to remind us that consistently justice is found in fighting for life, for humanity, and for the greater good. Sometimes we can even find beauty in the mess. We also are thrilled to welcome third-year HUC-JIR rabbinical student Hannah Bender as they join us as our Q&A guest.

11 May 2021Ep. 26 - B’midbar with Micah Hart00:58:22

Who decides who counts in this week’s Torah portion? It’s a confusing question, but we were really lucky to have Micah Hart host of Who Knows One, an online Jewish game show that believes in “nurturing relationships that we haven’t had time for.” Whether we’re hearing about bridging gaps in the Jewish community or talking about (re)connection, it was a pleasure to hear how it all plays out. 28 Jun 2021Ep. 33 - Pinchas with Sara Shapiro-Plevan00:55:44

If we’re going to be serious about enacting our own Torah values, we need to look no further than to pay equity and the daughters of Zelophehad. Perhaps that’s why we were SO excited to learn with and from Sara Shapiro-Plevan, co-founder of the Gender Equity in Hiring in the Jewish Community Project (GEiHP). 21 Mar 2022Ep. 224 - Sh’mini with Rabbi David Levin-Kruss00:55:17

How do we make sense of a Torah portion that is — in Amanda Katherine Weiss’s words — “savage?” I guess we’ll need a good Teacher, one like Rabbi David Levin-Kruss, Director of Jewish Education for JDC Europe and Jewish Learning Director for Yesod Europe. For Parashat Sh’mini, we’re discussing Jewish Education and how we put learning into practice.

22 Aug 2022Ep. 241 - Re’eh with Rabbi Ariel Naveh00:46:39

In this week’s episode, Amanda coins a new term: “nudgecator.” What’s a nudgecator? Let’s ask Rabbi Ariel Naveh!

For Parashat Re’eh, Rabbi Ari talks with us about a pursuit of justice for the future by reckoning with our past. Whether it’s passages of Torah or moments in American history, we need to be able to look back and be honest about the darker elements. And, as we say throughout the episode, that can be really hard. So join us as we talk Torah, history, and action for this week’s episode.

15 Aug 2022Ep. 240 - Eikev with Romina (Romi) Naparstek00:53:48

“They tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat” might be a temporary tagline, but when it comes down to it, food is often the defining factor that helps us bring Judaism to the table. What makes Judaism and food so appetizing? We were lucky to have Early Childhood Academy Director and pastry chef Romina (Romi) Naparstek with us to help us explain the blessings of all of the steps that come in creating a meal. When was the last time you remembered to savor the people around the table? To give thanks for each part (and person) who helped bring the meal together? Romi helps us redefine the concept of mindful eating through a Jewish lens and we think it’d be a great addition to your podcast menu.

17 Apr 2023Ep. 324 - Tazria-Metzora with Samantha Klipstein00:36:49

Who doesn’t love a bargain? This week we’re getting an excellent guest to take on not one, but two parashiyot (well, at least a two-in-one because this week we have a double portion!). We are so thrilled to have Samantha Klipstein join us and walk us through what this week’s portion can look like through the lens of modern-day healthcare. How can we provide care and destigmatize diagnoses? How can we ensure that our medical providers are treated with honor and respect? How can we do it all without a sacrificial system? We know that this episode will be for all, for each according to their ability (hey that’s from this week’s portion!).

17 Jan 2022Ep. 215 - Yitro with Jon Adam Ross01:14:13

In[heir]ited wisdom isn’t the end all and be all of our knowledge—we learn best when we’re able to share these stories with others and learn from their stories as well. Not only do we learn this from Moses and Yitro in this week’s portion, but we also get the benefit of learning from collaborative creator extraordinaire—JAR!—that is, Jon Adam Ross of the In[HEIR]itance Project. Hear about how we can use collaborative art to create communities, take new ownership of the text, and inspire an individual idea of what makes Torah tick. 18 Jul 2022Ep. 238 - Pinchas with Rabbi Naamah Kelman01:00:32

Would it really be a Year-in-Israel reunion episode without the Dean of the HUC Jerusalem campus Rabbi Naamah Kelman? Absolutely not! All of us have a go-to memory of learning with and being supported by Rabbi Kelman during our Year-in-Israel and we are just a small part of her legacy of teaching current and future Jewish leaders in the field! Speaking of rebellion, restoration, representation, leadership, legacy, and so much more, we are honored to continue the learning—even if it’s on an international scale! 12 Jul 2021Ep. 35 - Devarim with Rabbi Rick Jacobs01:01:07

We’re beginning a new book—hooray! Well, kind of? It seems to us that there’s a crazy amount of re-storying here—but maybe we’re just imagining things? Or are we? To help us summarize and begin a new chapter, we are thrilled to have Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Union for Reform Judaism. Rabbi Jacobs helps us understand how to not get too comfortable in the moment, understand where we might fit in among improvers, transformers, and disruptors, and reminds us that it’s always up to us to change and to question. 17 Aug 2021Ep. 39 - Ki Teitzei with Scott Shay00:54:41

In Jewish Tradition (Shabbat 31a) we learn that the first question asked at the heavenly gates is: “Were you honest in your business dealings?” Lucky for us, we were able to explore some of the business ethics and general emphasis on greater humanitarian practice with Scott A. Shay the cofounder and Chairman of Signature Bank. Whether talking about the practical aspects of idolatry (“In Good Faith!”), discussing how Hillel influences the bank’s standards and procedures, or exploring how we can genuinely interact and engage with a strong interest in each other’s growth, Scott taught us a lot not only about this week’s Torah portion, but also through bringing in other examples of biblical proportions! 13 Mar 2023Ep. 319 - Ki Tisa with Dr. Miriam Heller Stern00:53:43

While this may be one of our first majorly law-centered locations, Mishpatim helps us look at our humanity and our Jewishness as an interconnected feature of Judaism, the Jewish People, and the Jews. Rabbi Howard Goldsmith helps us play with how we might inspire our communities with a people-first approach, discovering our whys by reading past the whats. Whether you’re a listener who intensely follows halakhah (Jewish law), or a person who believes that Jewish law just doesn’t simply apply (excepting those laws who help us treat each other right), then this episode is definitely for you! Bonus points if you can define phylacteries (we can’t).

01 May 2023Ep. 326 - Emor with Rabbi Becky Jaye00:56:59

When we’re in the middle of counting the Omer (the time between Passover and Shavuot), it’s hard NOT to think about what counts—in our actions, our thoughts, and especially in our words. We were thrilled to welcome back (this time as featured guest!) Rabbi Becky Jaye, Program Manager for Emor: The Institute for Bold Jewish Thought (a project of T’ruah!). We discuss the importance of finding diverse ways to interpret Jewish texts (and practices), and how we might enable people to open up the space for all to share their thoughts safely and clearly. How might we pause when in conversation in an effort to really get to the core of someone else’s mindset? When we have meaningful and authentic discussions (say, like we do on this podcast), we are able to deeply hold each other in presence and relationships in beautiful and unexpected ways (even when it might be difficult).

When we think of creating meaningful Jewish time, there’s no organization that does it better than Hillel—creating vibrant Jewish life on campus 24/7. Whether it’s building relationships, literally meeting students where they are, wrestling with ideas, or entertaining the ability to rethink, reimagine, and re-envision, Andy Gitelson, Executive Director of Oregon Hillel has something inspiring to share about it. We are so excited to start a brand new story with both the parasha and Book of Shemot! We hear about our ancestors’ entry to Egypt and are introduced to Moses—baskets, burning bushes, and bringing some awesome women into the story! We’re so excited to have an extraordinary guest with us this week—Rabbi Jessica Minnen—who celebrates some irreverent Torah summaries with us and brings her own spice to the story of Shemot (the first piece of Torah that she had ever studied)! 27 Mar 2023Ep. 321 - Tzav with Lisa Colton00:53:42

How can we look at the opportunities and goals that are constantly changing in the Jewish landscape to help us amplify what success can look like? Innovator, transformer, and community collector, Lisa Colton walks us through the importance of always adapting and adjusting with intention—and ensuring that our values can support those quick and necessary pivots. In this episode we check our preservationist impulses that might keep us stuck (“…but we’ve always done it that way!), and aim to seek how we might be able to celebrate new choices.

What can you do with a portion that tends to be a little dry unless you’re into legal tomes? You bring those laws to life and into conversation. This week we’re looking into the one place in the Torah where one might find a rationale for abortion access (in Parashat Mishpatim, Exodus 21:22). Through an incredible conversation with Development Director at Falls Church Healthcare Center of Mike Scheinberg, we talk about abortion rights, abortion access, and reproductive justice—and how each of these can be strongly influenced through a Jewish lens. 20 Feb 2023Ep. 317 - Terumah with Yoshi Silverstein01:05:46

How can we take ownership and notice of our bodies when we’re building holy dwelling spaces? Everyone has a gift, skill, or offering, that enables us to build sacred communities and spaces. Mitsui Collective Founder and Executive Director Yoshi Silverstein shares his insights about how we find sparks of the divine from within and how to share them via our creations. Increasing our awareness of the capacity of our bodies can truly help us create social change in our communities—the ones in which our bodies live. Are we paying attention to what’s happening inside and around us? In this episode, we dig deep to find out how looking inward can help us create structures for antiracism and anti-oppression work, even all the way back to when we were slaves in Mitzrayim.

In this week’s parasha Ki Tavo, we’re learning about what to do in the land—and we’re lucky to welcome immigration lawyer Jason Susser (of Siskind Susser), sharing with us some of the difficulties and values that come into consideration when dealing with immigration (surprise!!! It’s not all about politics!). We were also thrilled to welcome Edon Valdman, who took on yet ANOTHER role in the Drinking and Drashing: Torah with a Twist journey: as a Q&A guest.

What happens when the world is being destroyed and recreated and you find yourself in the middle of it? How do we manage our relationships and communication amidst chaos? Rabbi Dennis Ross shares his wisdom—both as an intentional interim rabbi and as an expert on Martin Buber—with us and our listeners about how we might be able to read Noah through a new lens: that of relationship-building and dialogue, of transitions and the temporary nature of our tradition.

21 Nov 2022Ep. 306 - Toldot with April Baskin and Tracie Guy-Decker00:47:48

What happens when our origin stories don’t really present us in the best light—or even shows us as characters that we don’t identify with? When stories are often shared by “the winners” or the people who wield power, there’s a lot of missed or erased history—all of which influence our greater Genesis understandings. Luckily for us, we were able to learn from April Baskin and Tracie Guy-Decker of Joyous Justice acclaim—how to step back, look around, and listen in order to lift up diverse voices. It’s okay to struggle with our stories—but the Joyous Justice team helps us find tools to confront confrontation and to help raise our communities to a higher level of excellence on the pathway to joyous justice for everyone.

09 Jan 2023Ep. 311 - Shemot with Aliza and Jason Plotkin01:05:18

Welcome back to the Book of Shemot! We’re starting a brand new book, but don’t worry, we have some familiar friends to help us move through it. Welcoming back #TeamPlotkin (Jewish professionals Aliza and Jason Plotkin), we engage with this week’s parasha through a new lens: that of adoption. Jason and Aliza walk us through how adoption can be seen and understood as a Jewish value, as we explore the different family structures that Shemot provides us within our first three chapters of this new book of Exodus (Shemot!).

Jewish tradition of adoption:
Parashat Vayechi (Gen 48:5): Jacob takes Ephraim and Manasseh as his own
Parashat Shemot (Ex 2:5-10): Bat Paraoh takes Moses as her own Book of Ruth
Ruth (4:16-17): Naomi takes Ruth’s son as her own Book of Esther
Esther (2:7): Mordechai takes on a foster-father role for Esther Sanhedrin 19b: Anyone who raises someone, it is as if someone has given birth to that person.

11 Jul 2022Ep. 237 - Balak with Eliana Light01:02:12

While we may need to [legally] acknowledge that Parashat Balak is NOT the same as the Shrek trilogy, we are grateful to have Eliana Light, songleader and prayerground phenomenon helping us find the Jewish joy in this week’s episode. Whether talking about the magic behind Mah Tovu or how we might protest against a prayer practice that is a struggle for us, both Eliana Light and Q&A guest Becky Mann bring forward the idea that music in itself is magical and that we have a lot to look forward to when we’re able to draw a line between liturgy and t’filah.

12 Sep 2022Ep. 243 - Ki Tavo with Jill Zenoff01:03:55

Jill Zenoff joins us for a delicious (if not overly-cheesy) episode for Parashat Ki Tavo. A friend of farms and food, Jill brings a unique perspective to our conversation about first fruits, blessings, curses, and — of course — cheese. We love cheese. How does the first harvest connect to our world today? How does it connect to Tikkun Olam — repairing the world? We’ll cover all this and more, all with a taste of Torah and — again — cheese. In fact, in a Drinking and Drashing: Torah with a Twist first, Jill pairs our Midrashic Mixology cocktail with a cheese! This episode is brought to you by Lactaid. What do you do when decisions that your national community are making are heartbreaking, troubling, and traumatic? You find a way to bring yourself and your issues to the Torah portion of the week. We do this with recent decisions by the US Supreme Court in this week’s episode featuring your co-hosts who had a lot of thoughts and feelings and yes, perspectives that we wanted to share. While we didn’t smash anything physically this week, we took a swing at why the Judaism that we practice has a lot to say on the issues that we’re facing as a nation.

05 Jul 2021Ep. 34 - Matot-Masei with Dr. Samantha Vinokor-Meinrath00:53:35

A dual portion to end off the Book of Numbers means only one thing: we needed to bring in TWO educators to make this portion shine (even if we’re hearing it from outside the land). Commitments, community, traumas, triumphs, all of these play into the Jewish memory we hold as a collective. Listen in to hear more from Dr. Samantha Vinokor-Meinrath, lifelong Jewish educator and learner (and cohost of the podcast How Do You Jew?) to learn even more about choosing life outside the land while maintaining a strong commitment to the people within. We were also thrilled to welcome our forever roommate and friend and Assistant Director of Education at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue Julia Bennett as our Q&A guest.

With rockets blaring and tensions rising, talking about Israel education is not an easy feat. We were truly lucky to share in the gifts of iCenter educators Rabbi Jan Katzew (he/him/his) and Rachel See who shared their wisdom, wit, and words with us. Whether speaking about the ethics of power, the gifts of showing up, or the difficulty in denying objectivity, this episode allows for some incredible insight into how we approach Israel education. 14 Feb 2022Ep. 219: Ki Tisa with Rabbi Ben Spratt and Cantor Shayna De Lowe00:55:00

In times of missing leadership, it’s easy to understand how a crowd could descend into crisis and chaos. When leadership is great and change is understood, a crowd turns into a community, one which is willing to stretch with its leaders, supporting, pivoting, and contributing to the change at hand. We welcomed the brilliance of Rabbi Ben Spratt and Cantor Shayna De Lowe of Congregation Rodeph Sholom as we navigated losing the scarcity mindset, leaning into the benefits of change and constraints, and finding holy moments (even when in hidden clefts).

15 Apr 2021Ep. 22 - Tazria-Metzora with Adrian Shanker00:58:14

But what happens when this is happening in real life and dealing with healthcare issues in the margins? You get an incredible education from Adrian Shanker, Executive Director of the Bradbury Sullivan LGBTQ Center. 30 May 2022Ep. 231 - B’midbar with Mariely Luengo00:53:10

We may be starting a new book, but also a brand new type of episode! We welcome in a difficult look at B’midbar where we talk about data, storytelling, and what happens when the right people are doing the counting (and recording the data!). With two Wonder Women—Mariely Luengo and Rabbi Stacy Schlein taking on the incredible work of this show (#ClevelandRepresent)—we get an insight into how we might be able to push back against a portion (or even a people) that might try to leave certain sections of society out of the story. Who counts? Who does the counting? Perhaps we’re misunderstanding the data and the story we think it’s telling. Listen to find out more!

We engage with Tazria through a disability justice lens and explore what it means to be inside and outside the camp and the ramifications of those labels in modern-day society. 08 May 2023Ep. 327 - Behar-Bechukotai with Miranda Bass00:57:39

WOW!!! This week, you’re hearing for the first time ever on our podcast Master of Sacred Music Gabe Snyder and RABBI Amanda K. Weiss! Woohoo! (Chazak chazak v’nitchazek!) We’re not done learning yet! We still have the extraordinary Miranda Bass who walks us through the significance of service (both to the Temple and to your country). Navigating the political landscape is never an easy adventure, but it’s worthwhile to use our values as a compass and our community as a guide. How we treat each other makes a huge difference to where we end up—even when it’s just finding a common ground when we stand in disagreement with one another. Oh right! And don’t forget…rest is radical and holy. (Also…#crimedoesntpay against people OR institutions).

13 Dec 2021Ep. 211 - Vayechi with Rabbi Chaya Bender00:50:32

When we are facing life-and-death situations, we might be rethinking what our blessings are, or who we want to be remembered as. What happens when those blessings (or identity characteristics) are ascribed to you by someone else who’s on their deathbed? That’s what we deal with in Parashat Vayechi and Rabbi Chaya Bender reminds us about how death (or near-death experiences) might really be an incredible inspiration for how to live a truly meaningful life.

10 Apr 2023Ep. 323 - Sh'mini with Cantor Julie Yugend-Green00:56:00

What does it look like to treat those who die with dignity? How can Jewish leaders mourn for and alongside their communities while maintaining the sacred mantle of leadership? In this week’s episode, we were blessed to learn with and from Cantor Yugend-Green, the current Cantor of Oak Park Temple (a special place for Executive Producer, Edon Valdman!). We look at the role of the Chevra Kadisha, the special Jewish burial laws and practices, and what it means to maintain silence (or even what NOT to say) in the face of great adversity.

Hebrew Terms Used in This Conversation:
Chevra Kadisha: a burial society, literally “holy friend,” who prepare the deceased for burial
Met/Metah: the deceased (m and f forms)
Taharah: purifying the body for burial, pouring water
Kavannah: intent
“Vayidom Aharon”: And Aaron was silent (Lev. 10:3)
Rosh: the head of the ritural
M'chilah: a prayer asking for forgiveness (for inadvertent indignity caused by taharah)
R'chitzah: gentle cleansing of the deceased
Halbashah B’Tachrichim: dressing of the deceased in burial garments
Tuma/tamei: impure, unclean or “vulnerable”
Tahor: pure, clean, or “whole”
“Baruch Dayan haEmet.”: “Blessed is the true Judge”
“Hamakom Yenachem Etchem B’toch Sh’ar Avelei Tzion Viyrushalayim”: “May God comfort all of you among the rest of the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.”

In the words of this week’s guest, “The role of an educator is to facilitate other’s learning,” and we loved learning with Cantor Josh Rosenberg, educator extraordinaire! Josh talked with us about music, learning, and a love of community, all in light of Parashat B’haalot’cha. How do we balance structure and silliness, formality and freedom? In Parashat Sh’lach L’cha, the Israelites are getting ready to enter and conquer the Land of Israel. In their preparation, they send out 12 scouts to go through the Land and bring back a report. And grapes. To discuss this mission, we brought in our friends and classmates, Lt. Matt Derenbacher (USAF) and Ensign Laynie Zell (USN), each of whom chose to pursue military chaplaincy during their time at Hebrew Union College. In this episode, we’ll discuss the role of chaplains in the US military, Matt and Laynie’s experiences in their roles so far, and, as always, a good bit of Torah.
