20 Feb 2020Episode 69: MÖRK BORG00:47:41

In an unusual turn of events, we talk about the Swedish pen-and-paper Role-Playing Game (RPG) MÖRK BORG, with our friend Eli Parsons. It is a rules-lite game that is heavy on atmosphere, putting the players into one of the bleakest fantasy settings we have ever come across. The imagery and setting were inspired by doom metal and black metal bands, many of which are specifically listed at the front of the book! We talk about how the ideas presented in the game book could easily be transferred to your games of Age of Sigmar if you have no desire to run an RPG session.

We begin this episode by talking about some of the new Tzeentch releases before shifting into discussing the third Triumvirate boxed set, including Roboute Guilliman, Cypher, and Grand Master Voldus. We spend a lot of time pondering the egregious anatomical issues of the vast majority of current the Space Marine models, and how they were remedied by Simon Egan with his series of Primarch models. We finish out the episode talking about our current work to build a better proportioned true-scale Space Marine.

16 Feb 2018Episode 35: Space Wolves and Forge World, a steady decline in quality00:34:50

With the release of a host of new terrible Space Wolf releases from Forge World recently, we decided to talk a little about what makes them such a disappointment, and how they speak to Forge World’s recent inconsistency in model quality. We touch on how digital sculpting has both helped and hurt many of their designs and how the incredible popularity of the Horus Heresy has put a strain on a relatively small company. We also talk about the newly released Rogal Dorn model, and how he may be Forge World’s best Primarch yet.

We also discuss the recently released Warhammer Quest game, Shadows over Hammerhal. We then transition into describing how Jake from Ex Profundis started a movement to bring the narrative style of Inq28 to Age of Sigmar, creating AoS28. The Age of Sigmar setting is a veritable blank slate upon which you can explore virtually any creative impulse, without feeling beholden to droves of background knowledge. This has encouraged us to start building a warband of warriors afflicted by an odd crystallizing disease, inspired by the J.G. Ballard novel The Crystal World.

We end the episode talking about Forge World’s latest Primarch model, Magnus the Red.

31 Mar 2017Episode 19: Is Shadow War Games Workshop’s Inquisimunda?00:28:24

This episode is focused around Games Workshop’s new Shadow War: Armageddon boxed game. We talk about our pleasant surprise at the game using the Necromuda ruleset, expanded to include other Warhammer 40k armies and weapons, rather than the gangs from the hive world of Necromunda. We talk a little about the history of the Horus Heresy in miniature form and how important it is that this new edition has recreated many of the classic Forge World models in plastic. We talk briefly about whether we think the new game will be successful in getting new people to play the Horus Heresy, or simply bolster peoples’ 40k armies. Finally, we predict what Games Workshop will do next with the setting, in terms of new models, and talk about what models we would like to build and paint in the future.

We tried to play Blood Bowl in various forms over the years, particularly after the re-releases in 1996 and 2020, along with a stint playing Blitz Bowl. This time we played Sevens, a variant of Blood Bowl that uses a smaller pitch and less players, but largely uses the core Blood Bowl rules. We chat about how easy the variant is to play and how long games take, along with our ultimate opinion of Sevens.

In this bonus episode of the podcast, we discuss the newly revealed edition of Warhammer 40k. We talk about a variety of topics, ranging from the new cinematic trailer, to the updated logo, and new models. We consider how Games Workshop’s stance on Primaris Space Marines has changed over the years, shifting from creating truly new unit types to essentially updating all the old traditional Space Marine models. We talk about the following books: Roadside Picnic, The Shadow of the Torturer (The Book of the New Sun), and the Crystal World. In this episode we are joined by our friend Brad Smith and talk about how there has long been a disconnect between the caricatured Space Marine models and the towering warriors portrayed in the artwork and lore, and how this led hobbyists to create true-scale Space Marines. We discuss some of the early efforts in this space, like Migsula’s Alpha Legion, and how everything changed with the release of the better-proportioned Primaris Space Marines. Finally, we talk about some of the different approaches hobbyists are currently using to create true-scale Space Marines, including the traditional method of adding spacers to the legs to older Space Marine models, and sculpting them from the ground up.

In this episode, we are joined by our long time friend and ork supporter, Brad Smith. With the recent reveal of the new Age of Sigmar edition (3rd), and the visual redesign of the included orruks, the Kruleboyz, we decided to talk about how Games Workshop’s orcs have changed over the years. We talk about the goofy looking Paul Bonner-style of orcs/orks that filled early editions of Warhammer and 40k, before talking about how Brian Nelson completely redesigned their look for GorkaMorka and 3rd edition 40k. Although Nelson’s designs have defined the orc look for over 20 years, their look has changed slightly, as designers struggle to capture the simple ferocity of his designs. Finally, we talk about how orcs changed for Age of Sigmar, becoming Orruks, and how divergent the Kruleboyz are from the previous Ironjawz models.
