07 May 2024Encore: When Ireland Ruled Eurovision00:11:21

In this special encore of a previous Douze Points episode, producer Liam introduces Steven's deep dive into Ireland's record-breaking success at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Until recently, they held the unique distinction of being the only country to have won the contest seven times. Though they now share that honour with Sweden, following Loreen's win in 2023, Ireland's legacy can not be understated.

As they continue to rise up the ranks with the bookies, and as we begin to wonder if the impossibility of Ireland maybe challenging this year is really that impossible, we wanted to reshare this deep dive and get you all as excited as we are!

Plus, the current list of countries confirmed for Eurovision 2025 includes an unsurprising omission, and the BBC pull out of Junior Eurovision.

Also, is the UK bringing back the national selection process? The rumour mill is running wild!

Continuing our series on the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest, we pick where we left off in 1990 and carry you through the the most recent contest in 2023.

The 2000s was also the birth of the semi-final, and the big four became the big five.

And don't get us started on the jury ranking weightings, but if you are interested here's a handy guide from Eurovision themselves explaining all the maths!

06 Oct 20241993: A Eurovision Like Never Before - Part I00:18:27

Eurovision 1993 marked a pivotal moment in the contest's history with the introduction of a pre-qualifying round, a significant change implemented to manage the increasing number of participating countries.

In this episode, Steven delves into the details of this unique event, held in the small Irish town of Millstreet, where just seven countries competed for three spots in the main contest.

We explore the backdrop of geopolitical changes in Eastern Europe that fueled a surge in interest from newly independent nations eager to join the Eurovision stage, and reflect on the overall execution and its impact on the future of Eurovision.

Listen now, as he sets the stage for a deeper exploration of how these countries fared in the main contest, coming in the second part of our 1993 deep dive.

14 May 2023Eurovision 2023: Grand Final Reaction00:26:41

It's the morning after the night before. We wish we could say the night was full of shocks and surprises, but this was arguably one of the more predictable Eurovision Song Contests in recent years. Finland's late surge with the televote wasn't quite enough to stop Loreen romping away with her second win, and Sweden's seventh overall, to make them the joint most successful country of all time.

On this episode, host Steven and producer Liam chat about Sweden's win, the people's champion Finland, the United Kingdom returning to their usual place in the leaderboard despite a valiant effort from Mae Muller, and how the UK have raised the bar for Eurovision weeks ahead of Stockholm 2024.

11 May 2023Eurovision Week 2023: Semi-Final 2 Reaction00:29:01

On this special episode of Douze Points, Steven is joined by his extended Bingewatch family, as Ian MacEwan and Hannah Fernando drop in to discuss all the highs and lows of Eurovision 2023's second semi-final.

It was an interesting night, as Australia compete for potentially the last time, Luke Evans performed some poetry (we think it was intentional), and we can all agree that Hannah Waddingham is our new national treasure.

What the evening lacked in competition favourites, it made up for in flair and enthusiasm, and boy is there a lot to cover! From Estonia to Edgar Allen Poe, and Austria (Steve's favourite) to a 'what the hell were they thinking' performance from... well, you'll have to listen and find out!

Highlights from the episode:

Takeaways:

  • The history of Eurovision presenters reveals a significant evolution in hosting dynamics over the years, particularly in terms of gender representation.
  • To ensure a successful Eurovision, it is advisable to have a team of three to four presenters with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Multilingualism among hosts is crucial, as it enhances the international appeal and accessibility of the contest to a broader audience.
  • The importance of having hosts with live entertainment experience cannot be overstated, given the complexity of the Eurovision production.
  • Sweden's consistent success in hosting Eurovision suggests that they have an abundance of talent to draw from for future contests.
  • The trend of having a majority of female presenters has emerged as a standard practice in recent Eurovision history, reflecting societal changes.

16 Dec 2023Olly Alexander Will Represent the UK at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden00:03:44

It's official! Olly Alexander, lead singer of Years & Years turned solo artist, has confirmed he is representing the UK at next year's Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden.

In a statement, Olly said:

‘I’ve loved watching Eurovision ever since I was a little kid and I’m beyond excited to be taking part next year. As a young boy I always looked forward to this incredible event of unbridled joy, the wonderfully chaotic mix of musical styles, theatrical performances, heartfelt emotion and humour. I really can’t believe I’m going to be a part of such a special legacy and fly the flag for the UK in the gayest way possible, it shall be an honour!

I’ve wanted to do this for a long time and it feels like the right moment to start releasing music under my own name. I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got and put on an excellent and unforgettable performance for you all!’

Naturally, we couldn't let this news slip past us, so Steven jumped on the mic for an emergency reaction episode. Here's what he has to say about it...
