19 Aug 2024TTRPG Actual Plays vs Actually Playing TTRPGs00:57:13

Today we discuss an on going discourse of the TTRPG Space: "Actual Play Shows are not how you play the games actually", at least that is what some people claim... Most of which have not been part of many actual plays.

But there is still some truth to that saying but in our opinion, it not a healthy way to say what is important about any showing/presentation of TTRPGs, and that is what we focus on today!

In this episode of DoubleDM we discuss why you are a great Game Master and TTRPG Player too. We discuss that it is hard to define a Game Masters Value at a TTRPG Table and what work you need and should do for your Games. 06 Mar 2023Should you Split the Party?00:55:09

In this episode, we talk about if you should split your D&D and TTRPG Parties. This is a meme as old as Tabletop Roleplaying itself and came from the first Editions of D&D where characters would run through dungeons and splitting the party just increased the difficulty of each encounter. But TTRPGs evolved since then, so is it still true to never split the party?

We discuss everything around Splitting your D&D and TTRPG Party. Spoiler Alert: We believe you should and sometimes will have to split the party. So we talk about when you should or shouldn't do it, how to do it as a player, and how GMs can split the party to achieve certain narrative, dangerous and suspenseful moments at the table.

If you ever asked yourself: "Should we split the party in my D&D Game?" This is the episode for you!

20 Jun 2021DoubleDM #21: Fixing GM Mistakes00:56:16

In this episode, we talk about our GM Mistakes and how we fixed them. We talk about that not all Mistakes actually are Mistakes, a lot of Stories can be written from things that might seem to be mistakes at first.

A lot of us do Mistakes and that is also not the Problem, the Handling of those mistakes should be the focus of it and this is what we are talking about in this Episode.

We hope our Experiences on how to Deal with our Mistakes can give you any advice on how to handle them in the future.

24 Apr 2023Creating Player-Focused D&D Adventures00:56:01

Players are the Protagonists of the TTRPG and D&D Campaigns we play. But often times they can be a little detached from the World and Plot of our Campaigns, we can easily mitigate and erase this feeling by having players create backstories that connect them to the world, NPCs, and plot. But how do we use these Backstories to create awesome adventures and give the character and player the resolution to their story? That is the topic of today!

We discuss what makes a great and engaging Player-Focused chapter to give each character the awesome story moments and character development they deserve. We talk about connecting them to the main plot of a campaign instead of making them sidequests alone. We talk about what players can do in chapters designed for characters other than their own and how they can become the best supporting cast and so much more on how you can enrich your D&D campaign with a few chapters that focus on the characters rather than the plot of the world.

06 Feb 2023The Game Masters Journey and how to always improve01:01:49

WE'RE FINALLY BACK!!

Join us today as we start Season 2 of DoubleDM, where not much changed and we are still doing the same discussions in the same format!

This time we talk about how to always improve as a Game Master, that you are never the perfect Game Master and can always seek to improve your skills to weave even greater stories, craft even grander worlds, or roleplay even better villains. There is always something you can do and improve on but it's important to look back once in a while too to appreciate where you came from and what Mistakes and Past Experiences helped you the most in becoming who you are today.

We discuss making the best of every moment at the table and playing with a focus on improving your games to have the best time possible and give advice that will help you in shaping future sessions to come and especially how to evaluate the games you played and moments that happened.

27 Feb 2022DoubleDM #56: You can beat Imposter Syndrome ft. MagicMissileRPG00:52:12

This week we are joined by Tyler from Magic Missile RPG, Tyler is a great friend of the show and has his own Podcast with his friends called Magic Missile but they get up to a lot more than Podcasting. Tyler has released 2 Games using Caltrops Core, Whispering City, a Noir Heist Game, and The Final Rose, a cheesy parody game of the Reality TV Show The Bachelor.

In this episode:

-Tyler is here to talk to us about Imposter Syndrome as a Content Creator, especially in the TTRPG Space. We talk a lot about how our Imposter Syndrome manifests and how we deal with it. Imposter Syndrome can come up in almost everything you do, be it DMing and Podcasting or more general content creation are just 2 examples we speak of.

-We discuss the influence of numbers and metrics and how you should stop obsessing over them. For us, it was very important to find a group of like-minded supportive creators in helping us silence imposter syndrome. We talk about the leap of faith you will have to do and that doing so is scary but necessary and try to encourage you to not be scared of not postponing the leap of faith.

-We try to give encouraging words we truly believe in but in the end, we can only say, the only one that can beat your imposter syndrome is you, and yes you can beat it!

10 Apr 2023Do you need lore?00:57:42

Lore is an interesting topic for TTRPGs, it creates an immersive world filled with rich places and people. Lore can give your world its heart and its character. The past influences the present and while the future will be influenced by your player's actions the lore will inform the way the world reacts to your players. So lore is pretty important to TTRPGs, right?

Well, kinda. Lore can give you all of those things but it often is not that relevant to actual play and to your players, they can invest themselves in it and learn more about the world you present but you need to remember that lore should serve the purpose of supporting players and the play at the table. And today we talk about how you can create lore that will support play and help your players immerse themselves in the games you play. We discuss techniques in making your lore open but informing and how to create the best setting for your needs.

28 Aug 2023Evoking Horror in TTRPGs ft. Elli of DoubleDM01:06:58

Horror is a topic that is being talked about all the time in TTRPG spaces and has been on DoubleDMs Showroom before, but today we get a new perspective from DoubleDMs resident Horror DM.

We discuss running a horror scenario for D&D and TTRPGs and what it means to truly create a horror environment that goes beyond just having a few spooky vibes. We give advice on handling horror as a GM and as a player, we discuss what makes horror actually horrific and what that means for you running this game, and what simple tricks you can deploy to evoke great (horror) effects.

Elli can be found on the web but would rather you check out DoubleDM and our (hopefully) soon upcoming shows.

25 Mar 2024What is most important in TTRPGs?00:54:02

We love TTRPGs and you do too (otherwise you wouldn't be here i suppose) but what is most important about playing these games?

This is an interesting question since this medium is incredibly unique and individualistic but that also makes the question incredibly hard to answer. However, knowing the answer will help you understand the medium.

27 Mar 2023Creating Compelling Villains for D&D00:55:56

Your Villains are one of the big building blocks your D&D and TTRPG Campaign runs on and making them compelling, grand, and villainous is crucial to feel of a Campaign with a Villain. But how do you make that Personality, the Acts they commit, and their Motivation actually matter? You need to bring them to the players so they can be a present force in the game. And that's what we'll discuss today!

We discuss about what it means to make your villains a present driving force in your Campaigns and how to make their Actions and Plans matter to the Players. We highlight different forms of interactions between players and Villains to make sure your players get the personal motivation to stop the villain and not just a feeling of having to do it because they are evil. We give a lot of advice on making your villain present and perceived by your players to make sure your games become that much more compelling and driven.

09 Jan 2022DoubleDM #49: Dungeons and what they are00:51:06

Why Your World Matters 3 is on the 15th of January on Sages Twitch

In this week's episode, we talk about Dungeons, which are an integral part of the History of Roleplaying Games, when you look at the "Grandfather" of all Roleplaying Games. A Dungeon is a term that hasn't been thoroughly defined for TTRPGs which was kinda odd to us as it is a term with a lot of History.

We talk about what a Dungeon actually is and how important they are for TTRPG, we discuss Dungeon Themes and how they can give you a lot of insight into how to design your next dungeon. A Dungeon always comes with a Hook to get your Players interested in exploring the Mysteries and Challenges the Dungeon holds, we talk about how important it is to make this Hook align with the Dungeon Theme and your Players Characters.

Your Dungeon is also just a connected system of smaller Parts, its Rooms, Dungeons are a lot about Exploration for us and that should reflect in its design and its Rooms and we talk about Individual Room Design and how every Room should be an interesting Place for your Players and pose Challenges, Rewards, Mysteries, or Progression of some other kind.

23 May 2021DoubleDM #17: Railroad vs. Improv01:05:15

Today we talk about something a lot of DMs talk about in Online Discourse: Improv vs. Railroad.

We want to shine a light on both sides and how both sides are not only a valid Style to DM a Game but also how they work combined.

We talk about what Planning we do for our Games, what we want to achieve with the Planning and where we Improvise, and how we do it.

We talk about what we find easy to plan, and what is easy to improv, and the other way around, what is Hard on both sides of the Camp.

We want to show that even if a lot of People often say one is better than the other that for us the Mix is the perfect Way.

24 Oct 2021DoubleDM #38: Expectation Management00:54:15

In this episode, we talk about Expectation Management and why we think it's such an important topic to talk about. Expectations are the fuel TTRPG Tables run on if they are not met people might feel disappointed and unsatisfied, if they are met however people will feel happy and will come back happily. This is why it's so important to talk about Expectations before you even dive into playing and this is exactly what we will be focusing on today.

We talk about how to manage expectations, how to talk about them in Session 0, why it is important to always keep an open line of communication to players and DMs, and what to do when expectations change. We give you practical advice on how to manage that discussion, how to navigate it and make sure everyone gets a say in it (that includes DMs), we tell you what to do if you feel like Expectations are not met or missed and how all this can help your table become better for everyone involved.

20 Nov 2023How to involve Pets in play00:55:18

Pets are often a minor thing in TTRPGs and yet everyone wants to have an Owlbear Baby (Thank you Baldurs Gate) or a Dog, Cat, Bird, Snake, Arachnid and so on.

We think pets are as stated a minor thing but still believe this is a great topic to talk about since pets can do great things at the table for roleplay and even mechanical reasons, however at the end its really up to you what you do with pets.

29 Aug 2022How To Make Dungeon Crawls More Engaging00:50:21

In this episode of DoubleDM we discuss Dungeon Crawls and Exploring Dungeons in D&D and other TTRPGs.

When it comes to Dungeon Crawls it's about exploring and mystery for us. Learning about an Unkown and often Hostile Environment and how to traverse and survive it. That's why Dungeon Masters should create an experience using their dungeons that is about exploration. In this episode, we discuss how we make our dungeons interesting and engaging to our players and how to make every dungeon crawl feel unique in its own way.

23 Oct 2023Creating High Stakes Situations in TTRPGs01:02:28

Today we discuss the topic of raising the stakes at your TTRPG tables and dealing out consequences for your Players actions and what's the best way for you to have fun doing it.

For us, stakes are mostly the threat of a consequence for a character's actions coming to be, it's not the threat itself but just that that threat is likely to happen, so how do we play this unseen gambling game in our TTRPGs? This episode answers that question and many more!

08 May 2023Creating Unique Challenges for TTRPGs00:53:11

when playing TTRPGs we want the challenges to be hard but beatable. We want something that gives us that feeling of actually having overcome a challenge but how can we do that in a more creative and engaging way instead of just making the combats deadlier, the limits higher and the rolls harder?

That's what we discuss in today's episode! We talk about creating unique new challenges for your D&D and TTRPG tables and campaigns to allow players to use their creativity, their characters features, and teamwork to beat the challenges we throw at them. We talk about the design aspects of these challenges and the different situations we can create using them. We talk about Victory and Defeat and why both have their place in TTRPG challenge design and we also discuss balance.

17 Apr 2023Putting the Dangerous into D&D00:56:04

Danger is an ever-present Theme in Tabletop Roleplaying, constantly Characters face off against Mages, Demons, and Dragons in stories that put the fate of an entire world on the line. Player Characters put themselves on the line to fight off a villain, save a town from destruction, and destroy a magical artifact, they face danger every day in TTRPGs, but why is that?

That is exactly what we answer today. We discuss why it is dangerous situations that put everything on the line that we crave so much when playing D&D and TTRPGs. Danger often means Challenges, Risks, and Choices, these things create Player Agency and Drama, two things we desperately seek when playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. And we will discuss exactly how you can create Drama-filled Moments of Bold Choices, Incredible Storytelling, and Risky Action using Danger in today's episode!

27 May 2024How do you deal with Character Bleed?01:01:32

Character Bleed can be a heavy subject for TTRPGs, when the lines between your character and you, the player, bleed together and your emotions bleed over into either direction.

It is a real heavy subject that does not always end positively, so how do we deal with it? How do we make sure it doesn't impede our fun and enjoyment of this hobby?

08 Jul 2024D&D Plots: Quality is greater than Quantity00:58:16

when it comes to plots in our D&D and TTRPG games it's obvious that we all want more quality adventures than just a mass of plots.

But this question goes deeper, how many plots can you maintain at the same time and how many plots is too many really? Can you have 2 main plots at once? and a lot more in this episode

17 Jul 2023Sandbox Gaming in TTRPG00:52:47

When talking about different types of D&D and TTRPG campaigns people often have a certain campaign style that is referred to as "Sandbox Campaigns", but what does that mean?

That is what we are discussing today. We talk about what we perceive as Sandbox Gaming, why we think the term Sandbox might not be a perfect fit, and what it means to play creatively free (or more free than usual), is it good, or is it bad? We cannot make that judgment but we can discuss what we hear, see, and feel the style does well and how it works.

18 Jul 2022DoubleDM #76: Why You Should Pay Attention To Environments00:51:51

Episode 76 of DoubleDM discusses the Topic of Using Environments for your D&D and TTRPG Sessions and Campaigns.

We discuss a lot of different ways Environments can be used to create Immersion, Challenges, and so much more.

For Example, we discuss how they are Influential Factors in Worldbuilding and how you need to pay attention to a settlement's environment when creating it as it will have a lot of influence on its infrastructure, people, and appearance. Another way is how they are needed for great Encounter Design as not just a Backdrop for your great Boss Fight but also how they can be used in the combat by either side using Lair Actions or Area Effects.

As you can see they influence every scene and encounter you have in your games and are therefore an important topic to think about. This episode is focused on helping you understand how to make use of environments in the game and how to better play with them in the future.

29 May 2023Making TTRPG Characters feel unique00:53:53

Something that we've heard and said ourselves quite often is that TTRPG and D&D Characters are supposed to be special in regard to the world around them, but what does that mean, how do we achieve that and what consequences can we draw from it?

That is what we are discussing today. We talk about Players and their Characters being unique in the context of TTRPGs. We talk about how the fact of characters being a unique presence and the knowledge of that fact can help you in your games, your prep, and your worldbuilding. We also highlight different ways for you to use and highlight that uniqueness yourself to create gaming experiences that won't be forgotten so quickly.

14 Aug 2023Creating impactful curses for D&D00:53:15

Curses are one of the fantasy tropes you just cannot avoid. They are part of every world that has magic in them and for good reason. Dark Twisted Magic used to make someone's Day miserable is a perfect fit for the fantasy genre.

That is what we are discussing today. We will discuss what makes curses fun to use for your D&D and TTRPG games and how you can create the best curses for your players to deal with and perish under. We also highlight how to deal with curses in a sensitive and respective manner as they often can be quite disruptive to a character's play.

12 Dec 2021DoubleDM #45: Social Hubs00:51:24

You can vote for DoubleDM here: EnWorld

In this week's episode, we talk about Social Hubs and why they are needed in TTRPGs.

Social Hubs are all the Places people go to socialize and meet. This can be the sole reason for that place to exist or just one of many, but that is exactly the reason why you will need them in TTRPGs, because we need them in our real world as well. A Social Hub can be many things but the favorites include a Tavern, a Market Place or a Temple.

We give advice on how to build social hubs and what you should pay attention to when building them, while also talking about how social hubs reflect on their patrons and how you will also build a lot for them with your social hub.

09 May 2021DoubleDM #15: TTRPG Setting Design ft. Jon Hodgson01:20:14

This episode focuses on the topic of Designing a TTRPG Setting Book. Specifically the DnD 5e Setting Book, BEOWULF Age of Heroes from Handiwork Games.

Jon Hodgson one of the Writers and the Owner of Handiwork Games talks about the challenges of designing such a Book, What the Creative Process looks like, and his best advice for people looking to do the same. He talks about the Importance of Passion for a Project and how important it is to do something accomplishable.

Jon has worked a lot in the TTRPG Industry, for example, he was an Artist on the Adventures in Middle Earth by Cubicle 7 and also the Writer on the Loremasters Guide to the Adventures on Middle Earth Setting.

He talks about his Past Experiences in TTRPG Design and What BEOWULF is all about.

BEOWULF Age of Heroes is a 5e Setting inspired by the BEOWULF Saga, adapted for DnD 5e Duet Play (meaning 1 GM and 1 Player) diving deep into the Beowulf Mythos of besting Epic Monsters and Saving the Lands. The Book includes interesting Mechanics and Additions to DnD 5e, like the Hero Class which is adapted to make Duet Play in DnD work, or the Followers which are NPCs that work with the Hero to best Monsters and other Problems.

10 Oct 2021DoubleDM #36: Taking Notes00:58:48

This week we talk about taking Notes for TTRPGs. Notes help people remember Information and paint Mental Images for themselves, They are pretty useful in a lot of Aspects for TTRPGs, but there is one Major caveat there: Note Taking shouldn't be a barrier to play TTRPGs for us.

Note Taking is not necessarily for everyone but this Episode talks at length about what we use our Notes for as DMs and as Players, how we take them and how to get better at taking notes, while always remembering that Notes are a tool to help you not a barrier to hinder you from having fun or even playing.

02 Oct 2023Adding Layers to your Monster Lairs00:57:07

This time we're talking about Lairs in D&D and other TTRPGs. Lairs are places your Monsters, Villains and just Entities are at home and feel safe, but how do we make these places actually interesting and not just a place for another combat?

Our discussion focuses on all aspects of a lair, be it the vibe you want to evoke, the combat you want to hold in it, or the Personality and Facettes of the Villain it should portray. Lairs are more than just a place, they are a reflection of whatever lives here and we will help you make them feel that way!

07 Aug 2023Please start Min-Maxing in D&D00:55:57

There are a few Discourse topics that always come up in TTRPG Discussions, especially in D&D Circles, one of these topics is Optimised vs. Unoptimised Characters often also referred to as Min Max Discourse.

That is what we are discussing today. We want to shine a light on why this is in our opinion a pointless discussion and why saying one side is clearly better than the other feels disingenuous to what it actually means to build a character. We give Game Masters helpful advice on "dealing with a min-max player" and how to handle the actual real problem at the heart of this discussion. So start Min Maxing your Characters and join us for this episode!

02 Sep 2024LAW AND ORDER D&D UNIT + ANNOUNCEMENT00:43:16

Let's discuss law and order, especially lawmaking, in your D&D settings today!! How do you write some good legal texts for your D&D Settings that represent the people making it, living under it, enforcing it, and convicted by it?

There are some special questions about law-making in fantasy and sci-fi worlds but general rules still apply and we will discuss both from the basis to the specialisation.

We also changed our Podcast Host so if this episode appears weird that's probably why and please let us know what is weird about it.

16 Sep 2024Playing Episodic TTRPGs00:39:44

Building your TTRPG Campaigns to be like TV Shows is a great way to make every single session engaging and immersive but also gives you many upsides to playing TTRPGs outside of the game, like scheduling and information retention.

In today episode we discuss making your games more episodic and less one plotline broken up into several little chunks of play so that your games are easily digestible and fun.

23 Sep 2024How to (not) keep Character Secrets00:56:04

Player Characters in D&D need secrets, at least something that makes them interesting and maybe hides a facette of them for some time from the rest of the party.

But the importance of these secrets does not come from keeping them well, it comes from revealing them and letting the rest discover them. So today let us spill the secrets on how to create good secrets!

25 Nov 2024Using Dynamic Worldbuilding in your worlds00:59:03

How do you make your worlds fit for your TTRPGs? One technique we all use and should use even more consciously is Dynamic Worldbuilding. But what is that exactly?

Dynamic Worldbuilding is a Way of making your world fit your current situation in your D&D and TTRPG Campaigns without building the world first and trying to make your campaign ideas fit into a smaller mold. This leaves much of the world blank at first and lets you fill in whenever you want.

02 Dec 2024Do we need Base Building in TTRPGs?00:58:36

Base Building is something that often feels lacking in TTRPGs, to me personally, why is that? It feels like it's there to be used but not ingrained into the core of the game so it just becomes a bonus add-on.

But does it have to be that way? No it doesn't. In this episode Nils talks to us about Bases and we discuss their benefits and Emils problems with them to maybe find a better solution.

06 Jan 2025How long should your D&D Campaign be?00:59:50

Campaign length (no not base building like i said in the recap) is something that we have talked about before but we wanted to discuss the topic again. So why does this even matter?

TTRPGs, like D&D, are a time investment for players and GMs alike, knowing how long a campaign will be is a good way to know how much you should and can invest in said game. But you can't define the length strictly to 5 sessions or 2 chapters... you have to have playroom to let the freeform medium of ttrpgs bloom but just saying 'as long as it takes' is also not the right answer. So what is?

13 Jan 2025How to give players more confidence00:55:54

Confidence is something everyone struggles with in TTRPGs, at least somewhat. Be it not knowing what your character should do, not knowing if your characters are cut out for the task at hand, or even if you are "good" enough to play.

Today we talk about exactly that. How to foster a vibe and atmosphere of trust at the table to give new players the confidence to speak up and share their ideas and a few reminders for players struggling with overthinking about the game and what they should do and how they should act. It is all just a game for fun so let's play some D&D.

23 Jan 2022DoubleDM #51: DM Tools and what they do00:55:36

Please excuse any irregularities and problems with the Editing of this Episode as we are trying a lot of new Techniques and Software.

In this episode we talk about DM Tools and what they do, DMs and GMs use a lot of tools to help us run, prep, and enjoy our Games, and in this episode Nils and I highlight the Tools we use, how we use them, for what reason we use them and how they help us improve the Quality of our Games.

We talk about the process of finding the right tools for the job you do. Your DM Style will be different from ours and you might therefore use different Tools than us, it is about the effect the Tools hold for us, how they help to create immersion, make preparing a game more easily, organize your notes or simply support you in the way you work.

13 Jun 2021DoubleDM #20: One-Shot vs. Campaign Design00:59:40

In this Episode of DoubleDM we talk about One-Shots and Campaigns.

How do both differ from each other in Play, Prep, and Design. The Discussion focuses on Major Differences we see between the two.

What are the Strongsuits of both Sides and what are their Weaknesses, what they allow you to do as a DM, and what as a Player.

How One-Shots provide a Training and Test Ground for a lot of Things, like new Systems, new Rules, or new People while Campaigns give you the time to develop Stories, Characters, and Twists.

Campaigns need a long-term commitment while One-Shots need to be done in the given timeframe.

16 Oct 2023Inviting More Chaos in the Game00:53:54

Today we have an incredible topic and episode for you that discusses chaos at the D&D and TTRPG tables. But what does that mean and why do you want more of it?

What we understand as chaos is the innate randomness and creativeness of TTRPGs that allow for truly unexpected things to happen. Living in the Moment of the Game and Experiencing it is what you want from most games and today we're here to help you understand how you can invite more and let loose when playing.

12 Aug 2024Finding the right TTRPG to play00:58:14
